"And I can appreciate why they didn't want to say the story that we're interested in is the Rockford peaches to the exclusion of the reality of black female ball players at the time because there is a history of that, right? As we reconsidered, you know, and sort of reexamined the Negro leagues we learned about the history of women in that league after integration, right? So there are important stories to tell here and I would hate for those stories to not be told, but it does, it does constrain the series to have these two parallel stories that are only intermittently bridged. And it can lead to it feeling kind of disjointed. Yeah. Now, I will say, I think that they still made the right decision to do it this way rather than have it be sort of an alternate history version of that era, right? Because yes. You know, like I think people's mileage with Bridgerton as an example can kind of vary right. And I think that there are ways in which that show can be kind of too cute for its own good, but I also think that regency England doesn't feel close to us. Yeah, right. And this era and the prejudice that marked it is still very close to us, right? Like we are still admittedly less you and I specifically, but like our still living with the reverberations of this period of American history. And so I think it would have felt, I don't know if offensive is the right word, but like disingenuous to try to revitalize this time in a sort of ahistorical or alternate history model because this is still so close for so many people and I think that they made the right choice and also the necessity of that choice does put a structural sort of issue at the heart of the series that like I said they are sometimes I think more deft and navigating than others. Right, yeah it's kind of like when MLB finally designated or recognized Negro league stats as major league, I think one of the concerns that people had was like, well, are we blurring the distinction between them? Are we is this revisionist history? Is this pretending as if there was no color barrier, which I don't think is quite the case, but I think there is some danger of just sort of skirting that and not acknowledging that. I think the purpose was to acknowledge that these were major leaguers. This was a major league level of play, but you know, that was one of the sensitivities that people were like, well, let's not let MLB pretend that it stores where wide open or that there wasn't this bright line between the two. So I think there would be the same sort of danger maybe here if you just went back even if it was sort of an aspirational sense like let's imagine the world that we would have wanted to exist or something, you know, I think just to not recognize what was actually happening there as recent as it was in his resonant as it still is, yeah, that would have been potentially a problem. So I guess they did the best they could once they had decided on this sort of split structure and in a way I really did find myself being more drawn to the max side of the story than the peaches side and they don't interact a lot. You know, Carson and max meet up here and then and she shows up max shows up to the initial tryout scene, which is very similar to the one in the movie. And she makes her very impressive throw like that unspeaking character in the movie, but she is totally leave and then the rest of the series is her trying to find a place to play and express herself not just as an athlete, but as a person and the Rockford part of the story is obviously more aligned with the movie in some ways and Carson, for example, is sort of like daddy in that she's the catcher. She's the team leader. She has a husband who's at war. So there are some similarities there, although in other ways, maybe Darcy carden's character is more dotty like personality wise. So it's almost like they're syntheses of Dottie's character in a way. But between that and just the similarities with the baseball action, Nick Offerman shows up for part of the time in the duke and roll, the Tom Hanks roll sort of, although sort of subverts that role in a way that didn't completely work for me, to be honest, but it's a little more by the book it just in terms of the actual baseball, the baseball is fine, but you know, it doesn't stray that far from your typical sort of sports movie or sports show action and your whole underdog come back kind of narrative, I guess. And so it's all fine, but I don't think that there would be a pressing reason to reboot or remake the original if you were just sticking to the baseball stuff or to the peaches. So whereas that movie was studiously not gay, at least explicitly, this show is extremely gay. Is that much gay? Yes. Which I'm sure will be welcomed by a lot of people. It's definitely doing justice to the part of this story that the original totally snubbed and skirted. So whereas seemingly no one was gay on the original Rockford peaches of the movie. Almost everyone is gay and these rock beaches is just a lot about Carson kind of coming out to herself in a way and realizing who she is and telling others who she is and max's is sort of going through the same process, which I guess you could say, well, it's parallel in a way. I mean, at times, maybe it almost feels like redundant, like these two leads are kind of going through some aspects of the same journey, I guess, but I just, I really like the relationship and if I had to pick one actor who really stands out, I guess there are a few, I think chante Adams is very good, but be solo, is really good. I don't know that I would say the show is hilarious. I mean, it's kind of like smiling more than laughing most of the time for me, but she's legitimately very nice to the level of this is actually funny. It's because of her. Yeah. She's really good. And I also like Roberto Kalinda as lupe, who is one of the peaches she's picture. And that's another thing with the peaches you do have some more diversity, I suppose, you have Jewish characters and you've Latina characters and Cuban characters, so they did what they could there within the strictures of the league, I suppose. But there's a lot that's just about like, oh, the viability of the business and of the league and some of those storylines that are basically pulled almost without major changes from the original, but all of the social aspects of the team and the people that that's the focus here, you know, much more so than the baseball, the baseball is the backdrop, like obviously these characters really care about baseball. It means a lot to them, but as it often is in baseball movies, the baseball itself is not necessarily the main draw. Well, I think that one of the things that, you know, we've sounded a little lukewarm to this point, I think.

And i think that's kind of the key right. Is that yet. If you're That is unbelievably awesome. But if if all you can do Know is file high-quality bug reports or. some trouble. Shooting up comes or or get your employer to us. Get hub sponsors or patriotic or whatever You know to help a recurring. Y'all have recurring funds Or look at at different software projects open source. Projects have different funding. Like i've mostly over the years. I funded mine through the sale of books and videos and you know but other organizations have sparked contracts or rely heavily on consulting. And so you're looking at the business model. That's behind an open source project and trying to engage with. It is probably the best way to support that project. What has been helpful in your career that you might share with those just getting started looking to level up their own careers patients. I think is probably the key. I count myself fortunate. Because i get to do what i love. I love software development. I love design programming. And so that to me. This is all awesome. Sometimes it's actually work even right. It's like okay. I'm stuck building this thing on a technology that chose is already obsolete. And but there's the the point. I mean by patients is that Sometimes it's worth sticking around for a period of time and saying you know maybe the tech isn't as as trendy as possible or whatever it might be but there's a lot to be learned about the software architecture or the way the software in the business interact most software projects. Don't stand in isolation. we're we're writing the software but somebody else's re-training an entire thousand person workforce and maybe buying a multi millions of dollars worth of new machines on the shop floor or ray we don't know But you know and That that's where i'm getting at. Is that being patient. Keeping your eyes open and being focused on learning not just new software tricks but how software applies to your end user. That's the road to becoming an architect. or a senior developer. Whatever but i mean that's right. It's the road to progression in our industry so where can our listeners go to follow you and keep up with which.

"The the website that they were working on from within the browser hosting it up to the browser so so they could see the site they were working on which. It's a bit tangled. But if you could if you could get things like. I don't know i guess they'd have to open a special ports or something but if you could get things like docker in coober eddie's running from a webassembly base than you know really yeah everything could compiled webassembly and then just go and then it would just be a matter of optimizing the webassembly interpreter. Except it's not an interpreter web webassembly jet compiles and runs native suds. Yeah the the original prototypes for webassembly. Were interpreted but Webassembly today takes your binary byte code and compiles it native. So whatever machine whatever device. It's running on when it's actually executing its native. Goad okay fantastic. I figured they were still doing the doing the interpretation because they're still they're still some performance degradation between like Certain cases for Earlier was a couple years ago. Maybe it's all changed but you know for like if you were doing heavy computation. You could still do it. Faster with Plano java script than you could with like blazer and certain webassembly maybe the hangup blazer not in webassembly. Yeah the the heavy computation is probably not true anymore. Because of the compilation but where blazer and pretty much all of the free frameworks that exist across any language. Webassembly currently doesn't directly talk to the dom and so you have to use javascript as an intermediary to go between the your code and the dom and so. There's there's a little overhead that goes there and hopefully at some point your future version of webassembly. Just let us directly. Talk to the dom and that. That should clinch it right..

"So are we looking is la. Been one of these modern cloud native type applications. Or what is the path. Forward there. When i think about cloud native in particular. I think a lot about If you go to a site called twelve factor dot net the so the digit one. Two factor dot net. It's a a website where they've collected a set of a design patterns for being cloud native. And it's fantastic. So it's kinda like the becoming. I believe industry-wide the gold standard for if you're going to say your cloud native that means that you're adhering to some subset or ideally all twelve of those factors and so yes yes away over. The last. Several years has evolved in key ways to support some of the it already did some of the factors ios others not so well and if you look at the progression of of dot net dot net framework into dot net core dot net five It has followed that same progression not surprisingly The the folks at microsoft are going. Oh wow these are great ideas. That really do work. And so if you take like the The configuration subsystem dot net. And the way it works today versus the way it worked in configure files and everything that that change is a hundred percent around the the configuration pattern that is in the twelve factor document and socio soleil also of course had to change. Its configuration pattern to fit the ideas that make it work really well in cloud native and Time well spent because it opens up the doors for Not just scaling or or cost-reduction but for a whole new and way better a developer an ops cycle the devops process twelve factor cloud native makes that almost infinitely easier in most regards now before we started recording. You said something about a connection between cloud native and blazer. Right i did yeah. Blazer is something i'm very interested in. I've been well except for work. It would cost several million dollars to get the grid control working in the new in the new world. You'd mentioned see us. La at had some experience with cs l. a. Ten or fifteen years ago is that is that still the same framework or speaking of. I'm assuming there's been some major upgrades in the last few years there definitely have And yes it. Still got the The clunky nineties era acronym based name but but yeah it it Depending on when you use it. 'cause the existed in calm before dot net and then i rewrote it for dot net and the initial but both the initial conversion and the dot net version were somewhat of a framework somewhat of a set of guidelines right. It was kind of a combination and people used it as a framework. Even though that wasn't one hundred percent my intent but so somewhere around two thousand four two thousand. Five i just. I embraced the idea that everybody's using it as a framework so let's actually make it a framework and that opened up a lot of doors. So a lot of people encountered countered it in the early two thousands when it was a a nice basis on which to build your own stuff and starting in two thousand five a lot of the things that i had left for people to make choices or left for people to customize mike now know if it's going to be a framework i'll be prescriptive than so. You're all forward from that point through today and So some of the downsides that it's less flexible but a lot of the upsides are that it's a lot easier and a lot more powerful us. Because i've already and i say i but i mean there's like eighty some people that have contributed over this timeframe so i should say we have really made some choices about how we think things should work. And and then created implementations or.

"This was a big right and part of the fault was certainly on on the package manager for actually even allowing the concept of yanking package but it still goes to show the the vulnerability that pretty much the entire industry Has at this point. Two major open source projects or even really important minor ones going away. So what do we i mean. Obviously if you're if you're pulling something that's closed source That's causing you. The business money. It's a lot easier for the business to be aware of that because like me as a developer. I'm not going to be paying the the licensing fee right. I'm gonna have to go get someone to go. Hand handle that and then i think that also allows for the business to sort of be a little bit more involved and cognizant of when we're pulling in those dependencies but pulling in an open source package is just super simple from developer's perspective so like that that we can add in that dependency at almost no cost. But there's an hidden burden from develop perspective what really ought to be bringing back to the business and You know how do we. How does that relationship work on a really good level you're right about proprietary software in that companies for one thing. Yeah you're right. The developer doesn't pay for it. The company does which is good right. Because it's now it becomes the company's choice and a company that Has any experience in. This will do some level of a vendor assessment right in a not just assessing. Does the product do what i needed to do. But also they'll look at the at the company that provides that product and look at its financial health and history and make an assessment and say. I know this. The they've been like microsoft seems pretty safe right Whereas bob's basement software. M maybe. We need more scrutiny. Open sorry but if you step back just a little bit..

"Apple spent A bunch of time telling everybody what they're all about their new ios and mac and languages enhancements and all sorts of cool stuff. You know they're. They are very much the microsoft of the nineties right. they're very closed Very secretive and A lot like what microsoft was in the mid nineties and and yet they're still a driving force for enhancement and progression in our industry because they are competing with open source with microsoft with google. I think you're right in some sense because open source allows people to take some really innovative ideas. Run with them. In a way that probably would never get funded by a corporate entity And sometimes those ideas are victorious on their own. Sometimes company buys out the idea. Your buys out the open source project end sometimes yellow. The innovation is driven from proprietary companies. So it's a combination of all of these things. Seems like there's a big discussion about open source software sustainability corporate sponsorship. Or how to make sure that these projects stay afloat that the the maintainers contributors are maintaining the software so to speak that there is a community around it has that changed much in decades is that is that sustainability model changing. Is there a new horizon coming or what. What is the future of sustainable open source software. It is tough and and it's a complicated topic. Although i don't think it should be complicated Yeah and yeah. You're right just in the last week or so. There's there's been a lot of activity because of a blog post and some tweets around at that have generated a lot of great conversation About a month ago well actually a little more. I guess two or three months ago. I published something for forbes. That was along a similar line irresponsible. Use of open source. And what what that should mean. Which isn't what it really means right. But what it should mean in my view is that There's an unwritten contract with open source in that if you use open source. You are beholden to the same community. your fate becomes tied to the creators of open source. And this is especially true. If you're relying on open source frameworks are open source. Tools are open source operating systems to do your.

It's longer than the script. So i gave that to Steve steve wrote a wonderful pilot. And you know if someone said if you said to a tough guy was hitting him. So and so yeah. Yeah you're right. No i'm not i'm wrong. You're wrong thing now is he would act cowardly but he wasn't of course anymore the mavericks coward but anyway that That an owen. And jim called me up and said roy. Is i have a problem. I promised Meter rosenberg that. She would be the executive producer of my next series. No matter what where it was and he also has a gym. I don't care about credit as you may know. Are you pseudonyms. Constantly had twelve pseudonyms at one time. But i said gem. That's not a problem. You can be the executive producer as long as she understands that it isn't she's run. She's not executive producing the show. I am. He's okay and so she became the executive producer for career started in the thirty she was literary agent. She worked with people like christopher isherwood. Berthold braxton raymond chandler. She was a former communist and she actually named names in front of the house on american activities committee. You can listen to our episode on the movie. High noon for more about the people who chose various sides during this time in hollywood and by our kind of contemporary condemnation or praise for someone choosing either stance naming names or refusing to name. Names is really not a black and white kind of situation you know. Sometimes there were no choices offered. You had no choice. And she's kind of an example of that someone kind of slide at her and said well i think she named the names of all the communists. She knew who she didn't like but she didn't name any of the names of the ones she did like so anyway she she bounced back from that and resumed her career in the sixties and she managed. Robert redford and james garner Itala manager and eventually she joined garner in cherokee productions so she's an interesting person and she said directed six episodes of the show and juanita bartlett. Who i mentioned is another woman of note a writer and a producer on the rockford files. And you'll see her name in many many episodes also there's a black producer and writer who served in a pretty high profile role on the rockford files. Which again i think. He's pretty pretty typical for the time. Charles floyd johnson got his start in the army. I think some time as a as a either a patent attorney or an intellectual property attorney he basically shifted his interests to hollywood and he literally started in the mailroom at universal studios before applying for and getting a job as a studio production coordinator. Shortly after the in the first year of that show. There was a a an in warfare between meteorologist bergen. We're hawkins and Roy had worked with. Jim garner on the early mavericks but meet. It was jim's Manager and agent who had become the executive producer and they did not get along. So roy departed. And all the people who roy had hired a couple of the producers. Left one of the people who left was the associate producer. So i'm still in the production coordination department as their production coordinator and literally The phone rang one day and it was meeting steve and they were now running the show and roy had sort of step back and they said come down and talk to us and i went down and they said how would you like to be earth. So she producer. Well the interesting thing about the story is that i had still been pursuing acting on the side and you weren't allowed to act and work in production sagged didn't really loud and the studios didn't allow. I did so. I was acting at the same time so when they asked they offered me the associate producer. Job i was going. I'm just starting to also act a mess. What i really wanted to do. But they said think about it. You know and i went home by myself and i thought about it and i thought you can always act. Probably but you're i'm gonna be offering every day a chance to associate producer and so i opted to take the job and you know that was the beginning of a long career in nineteen. Seventy four is produce. Run for vice kickstarted a career that spanned one hundred episodes of the rockford files and continues to this day where he's actually been the executive producer of the show. Ncis for something like three hundred forty episodes however long on that show has been on the air so he kind of had many jobs starting as an associate producer on the rockford files. And i think eventually becoming a producer maybe an executive producer and again. You know just another kind of interesting little side note to this show. The rocker filed by you. Know a lot of measures just fairly typical piece of star driven studio entertainment also. Has this kind of little bit of a different imprint. In terms of who the decisions make decision makers were given episodes so a more recent rockford files pop culture mention You may remember nineteen ninety eight rock sensation. Ben folds five. They mentioned the rockford files in their owed to being annoyed by the then common nineties pose of being completely apathetic indifferent to everyone and everything.

That's because someone else played rocky in the first pilot. And then noah beeri junior joined after an thank god because his warmth and good humor and playful bantering and parental fretting. Were such a huge part of the show and they gave a lot of debts to rockford zone kind of care attitude and the scenes between them are always always interesting. You know there. There's like a free song of of tension that the they do very well. They do exasperation very well with each other undercut with this filial warmth and they it goes both ways so they're scenes are always great. Okay this next tip kind of hit me like a ton of bricks. it's something. I've learned the hard way over time but the question i like to ask is does it. Make me feel worthy energized or at ease so this is kind of my nuanced version of spark joy. I had a really hard time relating to that concept. Because there's just some things that didn't make me excited. And i don't think every piece in your space should have the purpose of making sparking joy. I think different elements serve very different purposes. And when i was boiling down to like what are the things that i want in my home. I want things that make me feel worthy that kind of uplift me give me that. Self confidence feel energized. Feel very excited to be inaction and tackling things or feel at ease. So those times where. I want to relax and unwind. I want things to help me feel at ease. So i kind of of like made that my game plan in terms of assessing trends to see whether there for me besides just aesthetic is beautiful. Do i like how it looks. Is it pretty. I kind of like this next step to if it's for me and Just noticing the in the past. I think i've gotten caught up in design and trends and got excited. Because i see everyone else trying these trends on and it being amazing for them and you know like people look happy in their instagram photos. Because they're they have this home decor there's just finished a space in not to say like they're not happy or that they're faking it at all. I think some people genuinely have found things and are sharing things that genuinely bring them that happiness that worthiness but just not getting caught up in their story thinking. That's also my solution if that makes sense so being excited for them to have found something that is so expressive of their style. Personality perfectly fits their space but not just immediately adopting that for me. Because i think it's going to do the same for me doing that. Like thought process behind the decor that you're bringing in and it does take more work. It does take more attention and more thought. But oh my gosh. Is it worth it. You're going to reduce your clutter of stuff. You're just randomly bringing in. You're gonna save money by shopping more intentionally and you're gonna end up with items that really do support your life and aren't just something that you're going to tire of in rockford. It's on trend and then be throwing it away so it's a much more sustainable approach and helps you.
