Anzu's Plan to Evolve In-Game Advertising with CEO Itamar Benedy

"Any of these Sports networks other properties on this episode of the E Sports Network podcast for bringing back a gasp from about a year ago wage a little more bonetti. He's the co-founder and CEO of on zoo in a more. Welcome back to the Shelf. Hey meets great to be here tomorrow is on the show back in February of 2020 where we discussed the growth of in-game advertising age people who miss that show or too many of our new listeners since then on to his a platform that makes it easier for braids to get into video game worlds and for developers to open up more potential White spaces in their games for Grants Pass. I'll do is work with Publishers like Ubisoft at lide Castle to deliver Brayden moments for major. It's like Samsung Pepsi American Eagle and many more Esports. We've seen it gave ads take Auto larger role especially patiently League of Legends open up space in summoner's Rift and it was filled by MasterCard an Alienware among other partners and just this morning as a record this on Wednesday, February 10th, 2021 rocket League announced that Ford is going to take over there it gave Billboards for the upcoming which are major on zoo also had a big adults with this what the platform recently raised nine million dollars in additional capital in around Kool-Aid buyback Fetchers and hbse Ventures. There is participation by plenty more investors, of course, including Mark Merrill, one of the two founders of Riot games, this follows two other funny raises of three and five million. So in Mark Gratz of the race, first of all, what are the plans for this capital? Yeah, thank you Mitch. So as you said we raised 9 million dollars beatcraft is one of our previous investors are still leading gaming Esports v c. B c is a new VC which comes from the sport world and a lot of touchpoints around gaming and then other investors are wpp the biggest advertising group in the world, which is also like in the existing investor and Sony Innovation fund, you know, Sony is one of the biggest gaming groups in the world and the owner of PlayStation. So that's a privilege to have them on board Mark Romero the founder and chairman of road games on League of Legends. As you mentioned didn't call ins the founder and CEO of super awesome that recently got acquired by epic games and the Chicago Cubs. Yeah, the baseball team go Ventures and gainesville's and illumine Adventures. So a very crowded and exciting structure of invest investors to have on board. I'm a Cardinals fan so we'll let the dog So invested things slide, I guess but grats on all the different people who came together you mentioned before we started recording you were in the position that every founder kind of hopes. They find themselves in which is we have a few people. We have a different options for Capital so we can pick the people that make the most strategic sense for us going forward. What did you find from the mobile the different investors? What were you looking for? Especially as guiding parts of the company to push it Forward? Sure. So I mean, you know what this round was not about it was not about as fast as we could have fine as it like very very fast as what it was about bringing the best structure. Number one number two, it was about, you know to maximize shareholder value. We could raise almost double the amount but we didn't want to make sense. This is the amount of cash we need for next stage Rose and then in the future if it's a year from now or two years from now we can do another round off. For that makes sense. So we were not looking at at you know, these things it was more about we have a lot of confidence in him. Advertising is going to become a major business model for game divorce across all platforms, through PC Mobile and an important ads category four Brands media agencies and the ESPYs and and the question is how fast can that happen or more sneaking about big Brands big Publishers not easy companies to convince them to do something new. So when we meet partners that can help us to make this happen faster than wages. Are we get excited one form to partner is again investment one is a strategic partnership and they can elaborate more of some of the Partnerships we have in place and some of them is people who join our team. So that was what was guiding us and looking at the different, you know buckets of we are investors came from there is some you know, some like VCS and financial institutions. There is advertising and groups. There is game. Groups and there is a sports organizations that have a lot of touch point in going to become an important overlap in my opinion the next two years. And of course there is like with the values that we want to group represents and communicate us companies gauges as the leading investor for equal opportunity and Which choice for us an important to him and announcement to basically said if the world that was how we were looking at it that's a great place to be at

"But yeh. It worked through Discord. It was amazing and it totally worked you can play beer pong virtually. You do have to also your your table though. Right? Right. Okay. Yeah, I guess she totally they just put the table up and you just shoot. Yeah that that totally works. That's who ever thought about that. Now it was a boy. That's a little too late cuz now it's a full year through the pandemic. I wish I'd thought of that back last March but that does have what I love to your pockets always been a at a favor. Yeah, we're getting totally I knew this is going to happen cuz I cracked a beer at the start of the podcast but I think this is the kind of concept that our audience is dead. Out, you know, yeah, but I did the stone game early show. I was not stoned. So don't go Jimmy on that one, but I'm sure my guests was cuz he he runs something called The Stone gamer league. So come on down obvious. Yeah. It's it's our third most downloaded show ever and for like four months. It was our most downloaded show and I was like, well, I guess this is what our audience enjoys. Intel's Anti-Mac Ad Campaign Highlights M1 Shortcomings

"So i'm not sure intel's taking the whole apple silicon thing well. The piece from macrumors says the chip maker is running an nt mac ad campaign. While the headline says it's highlighting the shortcomings of apple's am one that telling doesn't seem one hundred percent accurate according to the report one of the ads posted to twitter this week. Bus out intel's power in the gaming space in that ad piece as intel mentions rocket league a game. That is not available on apple's platform. Is that a shortcoming of the m one more like victim of a business decision in january of twenty twenty rocket league announced that it would be ending support for the mac and lennox according to the website. Big tech question. That was the decision made by epic games which was rocket league's new owner. This time last year the other ad mentioned in the piece would seem to have even less to do with the m one. According to the report an ad from last week highlighted by nine to five. "Besides the racing games which are a natural fit for car brands. There's one sport that made such a natural Fit For A brand sponsorship. I can't believe it took so long. It took it League yesterday Ford announced they're putting the Ford F-150 into the game. It's the first time a consumer-facing vehicle has been added to the game. So consumer-facing a key part of that. What does that mean rocket league has brought in a ton of different cars from media Universe has many of which are tied to actual Brands. You know, the Batmobile doesn't have a brand behind in the Dodge Charger is in game. So is Nissan's are thirty-four and so it's a Jeep, but the first two of those cars were tied to Fast and Furious DLC pack and they're based on old school cars for the charger it wage. 1968 and 1970 and the Nissan was based on the car from 1999 used by Brian O'Connor. The jeep was from Jurassic Park. So it's not like you can just buy these cars at a lot down. There was one other car that wasn't tied to a media franchise in rocket League's history. And that car is the McLaren starting at two hundred grand though. The McLaren is not a consumer car because it's a Subaru targeted at high-end customers. I'd wager to say maybe five people who play rocket League can afford a McLaren. Maybe that's generous Ford's F-150 is clearly different. The Ford F-series is the best selling Truck Series in North America nearly a million truck sold in 2019 when it comes to marketing you Market a Ford F series truck a lot differently than a new market a McLaren which is why it's fair to say. This is the first consumer-facing car that's existed in rocket League. What I think is really cool about the sponsorship. It says made up of a bunch of different parts first off the car inches the game great start it'll be available for purchase from February 22nd to the 28th. Then forward will also be a sponge for the upcoming rlcs winter major at the end of February that we taking over the in-game Billboards, which I still believe are a massive white space for sponsors Ford is also releasing a new ad around this partnership with the coolest part of that ad is that will be voiced by Bryan Cranston, you know the star of Breaking Bad also the dad from Malcolm in the Middle. Shout out to help crested also did for Superbowl at this year just to give you an idea about how much Ford is investing in the sponsorship and there's a final piece of a too which is also really cool Ford is hosting a freestyle competition people unfamiliar with rocket League freestyling is when you send your car turning like crazy to overcomplicate a goal in search of a sick clip, it's really popular on YouTube. It's doing tricks like flip resets double Taps Turtles and any other way to make a gold look really cool for it'll be inviting 8 freestyle rap. Our competition and the winner will receive an actual Ford F-150. Those are the kinds of small details that really make a brand sponsorship in Esports stand out to me. It shows an underscore the audience and the content that works with this audience as well. I really think this is the car sponsorship the rocket league has been raped for four years with the increased Esports investment from Brands like Toyota Honda BMW Mercedes and plenty more. I really can't believe it took this long, but good on Ford for finally making it

Wise Ventures Esports Officially Becomes Version1

"Digital media podcasting and video programs. Please reach out to e-sports network CEO marked in using the email in the bio of the show. While most people in Esports expect a brand name to be announced alongside. The organization. Why is Venture Esports has taken a little bit of a different pathway. They were first called wise Venturi Sports after the VC fund that created the organization and then they named their rocket League team version one. Now. They've officially become version one permanently listeners to the E Sports Network podcast might remember Brett Diamond CEO of wise Venturi Sports at the time talking about the organizations branding back in a podcast during the summer. In that show, he mentioned a wise Ventures was a temporary name and he also said version one was also going to be a temporary name cuz at that point it was just a name for the rocket League team. It was basically a placeholder took apparently the V one named took off enough that they decided to make it permanent version one first entered Esports of the Call of Duty League team, which is why they've had this sort of weird branding thing because the Minnesota rocker took on their own identity. The organization is backed by the will family the owners of the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL with a formalizing of the name V one is also adding a vallerand roster the team they signed was previously competing with the

"Liquid Plus Package launched newly-launched website that you might have seen some ads for Jesse. Welcome to the show begins instant. Do you haven't heard of liquid plus you might not have seen the front page of twitch cause they're airing spots during the LCS patches. They're launching TL's mascot into space on a weather balloon and the organization is going to be hosting in Among Us tournament. They're going to be dropping a crane into a whole thing of TL March and a whole bunch of other ads all pointing to this new platform Liquid Plus. So what is liquid plus and Jesse will be able to explain a lot more on the table. Level it's a place where fans of Team Liquid can gather and even earn rewards for being fans of a team or of the entire organization. I used to decide up and it takes you through your favorite T sports package favorite team look players for ask you to leak some other social accounts and explore the site Jesse. We talked for an e Sports Insider article back in August around the open Beta. What were the main priorities between that beta-agonists launch wolf. It's a huge question is so many things you want to get out of a beta and it's really not enough time to do it from the tech side. There was a lot of validation that we needed to do in terms of page many people can this platform in the support that offensive going to be receptive to the kinds of things that we built. Have we missed the mark on some things. How can we coerce strict those and of course on the other side of the page where you've got your operational side of things like are we putting out the right kind of content that people responded to that content? We want to test all of that stuff and you know dead. Better was as you point out a tentative out a couple of weeks ago now and it said it was up for about four months and still pretty close to answering a lot of those questions and it made some pretty significant a stretch their fantastic. How excited were you to actually open this up to the Public's. I thought you had the beta but how long have you been working on this? When did you first start off leading up to this week in this full launch. So look at plus started as an idea back in January two years ago. We took seriously broke ground on it and much of that year. So that's March 2019, and we worked on it under wraps for about a year-and-a-half before it got to the public. So it's it's been worked on for quite some time and another I don't know if the excitement's the right word dreads probably a more accurate descriptive on the tech side, you're never sure of things are going to go according to plan or something is wrong. A wrong and then if we're late nights ahead of you, but fortunately things went off basically without a hit yesterday. So a huge sigh of relief at the end of the day yesterday. I am expecting fires to pop up all over the site what people got their hands on it. Yeah. That's the thing that development right? If you do your jobs correctly then even then there's going to be something you haven't thought of and they'll be some some bugs somewhere that's firing off a million queries a second or something and It's only once you really get it out there and it's the world that you realize that oh, no, there actually was a problem here, but we had pretty minor issues. We worked through them very very quickly and took the platforms up and running in and super stable. And we're going to be proud of was going to say I read through the whole sign-up process earlier today. It was pretty stable. I'd worked pretty pretty well. I believe everything was working as intended took me about five minutes to go from the initial sign-up phase to getting all the side picking on my favorite players and then playing around with it. What do you want people to know about this site where Hey listen to this podcast right now? Why should they go check out Team Liquid Plus? What does it offer that has it existed in the past? That's a great question. I think if you're just a cable tech enthusiasts Liquid Plus is really putting the boundaries of what is even possible and Esports technology. I think wage, um woven anything else. This is the first real Esports loyalty system that exists in out there. I think you see a lot of people out there doing e-commerce loyalty which is which is all very well. We did you see a lot of people trying to gamify Club decisions through various smart contract technology that kind of stuff but but not really getting to the heart of what it means to be a fan of baseball steamer don't recognize that fandom fit in a real way. That was our Guiding Light all through liquid plastic building a platform that recognize off with fans how fans are engaged with two liquid and making sure we could identify the people who were engaged with us the most It's it's somewhat criminal that we didn't know who our biggest fans were this time last year our fans as we've come to know if the last eight months or so are just bought some of the most amazing people that we could ever hope to have one over to our side. We're kind of constantly in order of the the kinds of things that they they post and say to us and they connect with us into the volume of how much time how much time they spend watching some liquid. It's really really it makes you feel honored just to be a part of the platform. We won't be able to any of us. Like a plus right? So the whole point of the plus is that once you've connected or your account so you can just go about your life as you would in the other way like you don't have to worry about anything. But every time you engage the teamwork would be that we're competing in the LCS be that rocket league matches going on a. It's what I meant or just the glass part of my day just being a Counterstrike for assistance. If you're watching the supporting us, you're going to be credited with points and those points of these groups come back to your profile and our symbolism of your a symbol of your fandom for some liquid. Of course, if it's just without players directly on Twitter or Twitter or messages on Reddit or Discord, press any about the schools that is including our plan to schools. All of that information is being fed into liquid plus and we get along pretty good understanding of who you are as a fan and we're able to have eyes on give us a fat. And that's a pretty scary thing to think about for a lot of people that own a big bad companies that eyes on us, but we have pretty strong data protection and that's uh out of data Protection Officer if he's being a member of the community for just as long as I have which is about fifteen fourteen years at this point and everything we do is for our fans and all of the doors were locked away safely securely and only ever used to make it's basically let us know who you are as a fan and to give back to the well, they went on a bit of attention to the image, but Thursday, I mean, this is one of those things that we feel really strongly about until is really special. I'm going to loop back to the importance of understanding who your fans are and especially house that relates to traditional Sports and why it's a good it's reported E sports, but you mentioned connecting of all your various accounts and you know that comes with ones that are traditionally attached to your person, you know, most of these Sports communities not using Facebook anymore. But you things like your Twitter profile more likely to be attached to hey, this is me same with Instagram and then you also offer the ability to connect with Reddit with Discord places that are generally more of an anonymous profiles. Are you expecting any pushback from fans when it comes to connecting accounts like that specifically to the platform and you know can people still get good use out of it. Even if they're not connecting all their accounts. Yeah, we think you can get quite a lot of your settle good place even without connecting its platforms. For instance. If you just want to use Liquid Plus as an e-commerce loyalty schemes and by all means if you're buying things from the store liquid possible know about it and you'll get the appropriate points for that as well the added benefits of being able to engage with us on Discord wherever and be credited for that

Roblox IPO Update

"This year. They've been talking about an IPO and that was originally they announced they were going to do in November and December. They're like, actually we're going to delay it. You talk about sort of their decision to delay that IPO and instead raise the series 8 Round which came with a much higher valuation. You make the argument that hey this was a really nice called a delight to take us through why would a company would make that decision? We're going to delay the IPO and what Roblox gained by doing? So yeah. So I mean, this is a a pretty interesting and strategic play by by the CEO of Roblox by you know, the originally anticipated a traditional IPO for November and then they delayed it then back December but the second delay, I'm sorry in December they decided to delay and a lot of that had to do with what they saw happening with Airbnb in doordash. Those were two months, you know, highly successful IPOs both of them pretty much doubled on day one and so it kind of made Roblox think okay. Are we leaving something on the table here? Right because the original birth And when they wanted to IPO was was an average valuation of of eight billion. That's kind of what they were targeting. Right? And so after seeing what happened with doordash an Airbnb, you know, they felt like okay, they're an appetite here for investors to actually value robots in a much different lens. And so that was the you know, the option that they decided to take and so there there was a comedy there was supposedly a company-wide memo that explained to the Roblox employees as far as why decides they decide to take it off and revisit this strategy and so from December leading up to about January to your point. They actually were able to gather another round of Investments through a series agent round that valued them at twenty twenty nine and half billion. So, you know, you literally go from an eight billion valuation to a 29 and 1/2 billion, which is quite remarkable, right? And when you put that into perspectives you look at epic Gaming right and you look at their recent valuation went down. Leave I think they dropped about a 250 million investment that valued them roughly about 17.8 billion time around that ballpark. But you know, you take that into perspective right? You got a very successful such as fortnite that has the Unreal Engine. They've got a great ecosystem here and there at Seventeen and half and yet there's investors here that are valuing Roblox now at close to $30 billion, right? So Thursday impressive and I have to imagine now, you know epic Gaming evaluation is probably significantly increased. And so now you know it could you know, when you look at that as a comparison like, okay. Well, wow, these are two very successful franchises, but with a much different strategy, right Roblox is clearly a platform gaming strategy versus epic is a lot more of building in Palm Coast system around gaming and even outside of just gaming right the comparison to Epic Games is so interesting because I think people would assume dead. It's a more valuable company than Roblox. You mentioned the two different ecosystems. And you know with this is being said with the caveat that you're right. The Roblox is new valuation may have it as sort of a Leap Frog situation with epic games where they can take that and go to somebody else would be like actually we thought it was $70 billion now, we now might be 35 or whatever it like it sounds absurd but based on what Roblox did this year? It's clearly has a model that that could exist. So why does Roblox have so much value when compared to epic games that has that owns rocket League? They have fortnite they're bringing in all these different Major Brands into fortnite. They have the epic game store. I mean, they felt cocky enough that they got into a lawsuit with Apple after all. What is Roblox? What where's the intrinsic value from the company coming from? Yeah. Well what's impressive about Roblox was the abilities to build dead? A platform that targeted a market that probably wasn't as heavily looked upon right when you think about fortnite. It's a little bit more on the teenager Spectrum, maybe above but when you look at the Roblox a platform it the average or the the their sweet spot is really the nine year olds thirteen year old demographic right? And so there weren't a whole lot of platforms that were developed. I mean you can argue maybe Nintendo switch or even the weaving of platform but I think robots was able to sort of expand apply the this from a mobile gaming but also you can play Roblox and PC. So there's a lot of different platforms that you could play it on. That's more widely that can be more widely distributed towards kids right versus a Nintendo switch. You've got to convince your parents to spend an average of 3 to $400 on a on a system or a console. So I think that that's number one and then it's I think the reason behind the valuation here as well is when Roblox did wage Our file for an IPO they did have to of course release information. They're asked one and it was quite intriguing information that they released as far as their their daily active users and just the hours of Engagement due to the Panthers made their hours of Engagement pretty much doubled from roughly about 4 and 1/2 or four billion to almost close to nine billion hours, right? It's crazy when you think about that number, D E Yeah it like nine billion. I mean, you know to put that into perspective right you look at twitch twitch obviously is a very big streaming platform and their average wage, you know hours of streaming double during the pandemic as well, but it went from roughly about 2 and 1/2 to you know, a little over 5 billion hours, right? So you look at ROBLOX, you know, like oh, this is just one Platform One game will maybe not one game but one platform, right and they're able to track 90 million hours versus something as widespread as twitch is is is trailing in, New Jersey. Five billion in streaming hours, right so crazy to think about that. But then you also look at the daily average users of kids that are playing. It's like somewhere close to like 35 million daily average users. And so you look at that potential of the amount of kids that are playing this the amount of hours. I think if you do the math, it's roughly each kid playing it from roughly about 2 and 1/2 hours per day off, right and that's a lot of time right and and the question becomes now is okay. Well is that can even continue number one post-pandemic? I think that's where the speculation comes into play. But even if it doesn't look at how many kids had gotten onto this platform that are only going to continue being on that platform for at least several more years and then that a monetization that they've been curd based on their virtual currency Robux. I mean when you put all of that in a play-off like that's where the valuation comes in a place right? They've actually been able to monetize this amount of frenzy that these kids are going on this platform and buying, you know, using these robots to age. Not even enhance the game per se. It's really more for skins right or or how do they enhance their Avatar which is which is mind-blowing right when you think about all that. The Skins whole whole industry is the

Clinton Sparks Introduces Esports XSET

"Well in July you parted with phase and you announced in a big way through the New York Times that you were starting something, New Jersey. With exit so what is exit start us off here introduced me to this brand exit is the world's fastest growing Esports and gaming Lifestyle brand with something like a Culture Club. Right? So I'm going to do everything we did at phase and more because it was like I said because it was differences of opinions. There's a lot of things we couldn't do that. We knew would be great in this space include not being leaders in diversity and inclusion, but also understanding how to implement other sectors in other cultures and businesses into this space and what to do with it and how to put them together and really create something exciting to move the entire culture in gaming space ahead. So we decided to leave and do that because we we didn't want to have to answer nobody else. You know what I mean? It was just kind of like, yeah, we know what's dope. So we're just going to move forward with what's dope and we don't want to have to go through this whole rigmarole of like does he not like it does he not like it has she not like it so it's just like let's just go and suck. This new thing, you know aimed at diversity and inclusion and also being able to implement an Infuse all the cultures that we've been a part of for the past fifteen twenty years, which can really help the entire country. You know what I mean even phase included. "On fortnite was on top of the world in 2018. The NFL was one of the main Partnerships that stood out from that time. It seemed like everyone in the game was wearing an NFL jersey for a few weeks whether or not they actually particularly cared for the league itself. Now that partnership is coming back and expanding to Rocket league as well rocket League's exact activation has yet to be announced but previous collaborations with Entertainment Properties. Give us a pretty good idea of what it might look like. I'd assume a limited-time mode some new car designs and some Stoppers to go along with specialized challenges and fortnite we've seen in the past but it seems to be stepped up a little bit this year. All 32 teams will get a Gridiron Gang Outfit into Styles. I imagine a male and a female style players will still be able to customize their jersey number as well. Now that last bit is a little bit of a surprise to me last time jersey numbers were able to be changed players immediately started recreating controversial NFL players like convicted murderer, Aaron Hernandez and Moss a QB arrested for his role in a dog fighting ring. My friend Andrew Hayward wrote up a great write-up about how the activation was taken by fans in a direction the NFL likely wanted to avoid I'll link that article below. It's a good write-up about some of the potential dangers of in-game activations, but still the benefits clearly outweigh any perceived negatives on this one even with fortnite player based down from its eyes and 2018 Dodge still commands a large audience. "A good deal where nobody's actually buying the game so you're not getting a lot of people in the game buying microtransactions. I think at this point it. That's why it makes sense for them to go free to play. Now i get that and you know it would have had went six years before when free to play the did you see two thousand fourteen and twenty eight twenty five years. That's quite a bit of time before it went for your plate. Maybe should be a episode for you. Guys you know should gaming companies after a long shelf life game. Turn it to free to play that way. They can make microtransactions for the games. I can go and do that right now. Yes i feel like every every game should eventually turn free to play and rebirth their community. Could you imagine amazing if halo two went free to play like crap so i mean i think it works. I don't got goosebumps jeff. There's ways to do a properly in i absolutely. I think it's a great way to get people player. Game and scott. You play more free to play than anyone would appreciate even more high like the thing about you know big games that were once full retail price going free to play. You're getting a really good game anyway right because a lot of them. Don't change like the game that you get when you download rocket league right now isn't really that different than the game. People paid full price. For so yeah. I think it's a win win. It's a good thing all right game. Deb's you hear that make every game. That's over a certain number years old and throwing those microtransactions you'll be good to go. No don't hear that online games specifically because you want to rebuild your player base but single player guests like. I don't want shovel knight one of my favorite indie games of all time. That should never go free to play. There's no reason to but isn't this doesn't really apply to end developers Well you saw darwin project free plate replay ability like jeff said there's multiple modes that you can actually play you got you got the regular soccer mowed. You've got a hockey mode where the ball becomes a puck. You've got a basketball mode where there's a central goal instead of a central. It's a but well the basketball mode would definitely be for those players can actually pull the ball in the air. Whereas i'm not one of those people you have to have the skill to be able to put that in the who..

"I don't know think i read something. Where epic actually acquired the game. And it's no longer available on macintosh or apple because of that so they lost all the players on that platform. I know that much. I think it was epic that rockabilly. They actually bought company the correct. I just looked it. Up okay. Yes and so pretty sure. After shortly after that that's when they decided to go to play might move specifically with epic because that model their four nine model would work really well with this game too. And i think epic is sort of the masters of free to play. As i've said on this podcast many times. I think that the free to pull the excuse me the Microtransactions in night are the best in the business as far as ethical doing them an ethical. Way that benefits the gamer and the ad producers. Well so. I think epic is a good candidate to purchase the game. Because i think it you don't have to worry about how the core of rocket league being ripped out. And i think they'll still continue to just keep everything cosmetic but she probably hold off going into that any further till we hit the bay wall. I also i also think the idea to go. Free to play. Also probably coincides with the generation. Change in consuls And so you know ethic acquiring this title. Megan a free to play getting people on board with the free to play model right before the series eggs and the playstation five release and then having it release on those consoles shortly down down the road. They won't have to release it on the xbox it'll be backwards compatible not like the playstation. The police is actually made some strives but backwards compatibility even though i've been critical of them but apparently they've done a lot to try to make there's backwards compatible but we'll save that for next week the i think i think that's a big reason. Why now it's free to play and i think a lot of it has to do with the the the console switchover happening here right now. Yeah i think you're right. I was actually going to mention that as well. Is there anything else we need to discuss in the game play again. It's it's a simple concept by tough to master but there's really not a lot to talk about At least for us novices at this game you know some experts might be able to tell you more but it's a fun game. It's highly addictive whether you're complete trash at it or mark your Seal i have. I have multiple points to to that less. That's the old points though. Let's long form eight. Let's let's not delve into widely on this. Oh god yeah ok alright. Let's jump over the payments. Pay wall full disclosure. I did not play these two weeks because has played a ton of rocket league beforehand..

"There is a lot a huge skill ceiling. You're just playing like pick up and play claire. They can picking of okay. This makes sense. This is straightforward. Then you get into the top tier play like they. You will get smashed by someone who knows what they're doing and someone else's picking up and playing so it's not quite like you know like mario party or something like that where anybody can pick it up and play. I've always been intrigued by this game. Because incorporate like if if you're on a if you're on a safely in three three or four whatever if you're with people that know what they're doing each person playing on the same team can pick a different skill set like your your typical soccer. You have your forwards Or your strikers. That typically handle the ball past midfield and they're the ones that are taking a lot of your shots or you have your your your defensive players. Your defensive maids your fullbacks. You can essentially pick a skill set and play that skill set if you have other players that are even remotely capable of playing this game at a reasonable level and that's to me. That's that's the biggest astronomy. This game is that you don't have to do everything you can hang back and just defend or you can go all falls to the wall and try to score every time. The ball hits the ground but to me. That's that's the biggest draw to me to this game is. You don't have to be good at everything you can just be good at defense or you can be good at cherry picking up at the top and just waiting for the ball to get in front of the net. So i think that's. That's another big drama. This game is that you don't have to be good at everything. So the problem. I run into mark is that i'm not good at anything. True so pointy hugh. I'm not gonna do anything when it comes to rocket leak a right mark tech and let me know marvel vs capcom. Let's go now good. I'd get smash there. But i would just i rip your head off. Well it was talking about. Oh yeah rockin league so we should say the way you maneuver in. This game is not two dimensional plane like if you think a driving cars. That's a two dimensional plane so to speak. You're you're on the ground you really don't go vertical but it rocket league you do go vertical and there's a roof to the arena. You're in and so much of the game is actually played in the air especially for those high tier players. Where if the balls in the air you can boost hit your jump button and then use your control. Stick to tilt your car in a way to make you fly but it's really finicky and very difficult to do. You can master that. I could see this being the most addictive thing in the world. And i wonder why they went free to play other than to think. Maybe there player basis dwindled. And they wanna reignited. There's a line it's massively popular or it was at one point. I get in there still a lot of e sports going on lot with rocket league so i don't think there's an issue with the player base to be honest. Well east sports would only make up like the top to be. You know point five percent of the player base. If that. it's hard to really say. But i'm sure they have a good player base but if i guessing what they're saying is we're going to make more money having more players doing microtransactions than we will continuing the sell. The game for thirty bucks or i believe is how much it was. Wasn't it recently acquired by was epic stored and they acquire the game..

"Navigate through the growing realm of free to play games. I'm scott my name's jeff and i'm mark and welcome to episode number seventy three recap. We play a free to play game every other week. And then we end review it mark. What was this week's game so this week. We played the twenty fifteen smash title rocket developed by cya knicks whose games you may have played before such as bullet storm. It's a vehicular soccer title Released on the. Ps four the xbox one the pc and most recently the nintendo switch and it was originally released on july seventh twenty fifteen but went free to play on september. Twenty third twenty twenty minutes. Why we're covering it now. This is what the second game that was a quote unquote aaa title. That went free to play after so many years. Destiny to being the other one yet. Destiny twos like almost kind of a stretch but not re like nothing to is the original game but then they released a massive. Dlc that really just kind of became the new name but yes we never covered destiny to though 'cause destiny one did the same thing. Well yeah it's such a massive game though like every time we go. We want wanna do this one yet and we're like We don't have the time to play quite yet. don't wanna do it. it's too much game. Is it really different than the original destiny but rocket league. We're going to get back to rocket league. Because i don't want to be here all night. Game play so rocket league is a game. You've probably played an almost assuredly know about but for those of you who listen to video game podcast but don't know about video games which i think is zero. This is a soccer game as mark said however you combatants. Cars people driving cars or trucks around a soccer field and then bumping the ball into a goal. You can jump and flip and there's a boost so you can kind of fly. There's a lot of physics mechanics here to try to master. There's really not much more than that. You can play anywhere from one to four players per team as scott online co op play. It's got other game modes like basketball mode in hockey mode. There's tons of like other modes in their loss of customize ability if you're playing like private games that's about it though i mean. What else is there to say about rocket league. It's twisted metal meets fever in a unique package. That's pretty accurate. So yeah like. Jeff said say soccer. Game first and foremost are actually like radio controlled cars that have rocket boost on them. The so there's different points on the fields that have these Boost items that you can pick up and that's how you get your boost and stuff like that that the skill ceiling on this game is very very high. Either you stand the mechanics of how to boost in this game or you flat out. Don't and you pretty much. I'm in the latter part of that conversation. And i've watched good players play and i see them do things like time. The ball perfectly burst into the air in tap it toward the goal while in the air..

"Wreck global defunding around a thirty five million dollars wrecked has quickly become. One of the largest eastwards operators in the world has been acquiring companies all over. He's for over the last few years on the team side. Wreck is the parent company of Rogue Atop Eastwards Organization best known for its League of Legends Europe team who qualified for worlds this year, they also have good rocket league apex rousers as well. They also have Dr Lupo incredibly Popular Streamer Roster for content creators. In addition to those teams and Lupo wrecked also owns the London Royal Ravens in the call of duty league outside of just those competitive teams though his also acquired green lit content, it content studio, full cube of Fan engagement platform, and fearless media a media agency. It's one of the most expansive companies, all of these sports at this point they also have a wide variety of celebrity investors. Those include musical artists like imagine, dragons, Steve, Aoki's Nicky, Romero as. well as athletes, Rudy Gobert Landon Collins and Taylor Fritz. They also brought on the founder of top dog, the rap group top artists like Kendrick Lamar schoolboy q Jay Rock Ciza, and I was shot personally my favorite label out there. So how'd had to give him a shout-out according to wreck CEO? They are also profitable. One of very few eastwards teams who can say that that's likely thanks to the wide variety of other companies they have under their belt. Investment was a debt capital raise meaning the money more. So alone than it is equity in the company and it came from summit partners. Summit is leaving private equity firm overseeing about twenty one billion dollars in total assets. It'll be interesting to see what rex intentions are with this debt capital raise. If I had to guess I would assume they're gonNA use it to acquire more companies in and around. East sports not necessarily to expand more games they already have a big president quite a few of the top games as it stands right now.

"Walk into the Celtics Games weekly rocket league. Pro Show is the show where we get together every week and talk about. Just, how are professional going my name's nickname welcome to the show under Milton Damn excited about talking about this game because you can go forwards you can go backwards you can boost. That those you can also jump. Journal. Car. Kinda sometimes. Yeah. Yeah. I did all right also. I there's a few rounds where we play today that I got like thirty points, which I don't think is very good but. I think nearly. These particularly bad. But Hey, that doesn't tell the whole story maybe you're in the mid till the whole time. There's no way to know. All right. First off. If you haven't played rocket league, you need to go play rocket league. It's free on the EPA. Game store. I don't know what they charge for it on consoles these days it was originally free on the. Playstation plus that's I launched years back and I played it then. This game. If. You are unfamiliar with it. This is car soccer. You got a boost on the back of your car and was driving around. You can go up the walls you can flip around you and just trying to get the ball in the net the game just released today we. on epic and we booted up planet. I had a good time because time. Yeah Man. It's been yet the last time I played was pretty close to the release on playstation plus all those years ago So you know it's it's great to come back to this and dumb. It's just I remember it's a fantastic game that you know is easy to pick up easy to learn the basics and then just infinitely you know difficult at higher levels It really strikes a good balance between being a friendly for newcomers, and then just insanely deep for people that really want to invest a lot of time into. That does the same. How does it fill? 'cause you just pick this up today you seem to do fine. Yeah. This is sort of my first time touching league of of a C- seen it I've seen some of the insane things high-skill kept players can do on you know short clip soul Ovidio on twitter Bet It was fun man I mean. It is Kasaka. It's you. You know there's not too much to it outside, of dislike, refining your movement and figuring out where the ball's going and how it bounces bid easy to pick up, and you can kind of see the the sky is the limits with regards to how you can get in this game and it's a ton of fun easy to pick up. Until. You place like occasionally, we played somebody that obviously has dumped thousands and hours, and they're just play a different game than we are. We're over here just like I'm gonNA boosted this ball and they're going up the walls bouncing off of it to come in the right angle. It's say that skill cap is makes it. So there's a lie here like you can actually. Play this game for hundreds of hours at improve which when you would. I look at it you might not think that you might not be like, wow, there's a lot of depth there there really is yes. Definitely deceptive in its design it's just crazy and and I think this is the first time that I played the rocket league ever with a proper four stack. And it's a Lotta Fun. You know if you've got three other friends, they wanNA play you know some pretty casual you know matches and stuff like that it. It feels great to play it i. they really did something. Pretty special with this game for sure. Yeah you say it super casual and the first couple of games we stopped the other team may me because they don't? There's no way no for sure. But then as soon as you know those first couple games, we were trading stories and laughing, and then we got into some close matches and just didn't speak for the entire round or just like. Tense sweating. Funny Yeah. That's sure. It is a good point. Yeah it. Definitely, this game puts you on the edge of your see. You know I mean Obviously, if it's a really closely contested match it is definitely nerve racking and you know the one thing that really sticks out to me is just how crazy not only like individuals skill would translate at high level in this game but. The level of communication and teamwork that you would need to have with your other your other teammates. To to be really successful at this game at a high level is pretty crazy to think about you know what I mean. There is a lot of at low level like where we're at there's a lot of like we run into each other we kind of fucked. Up Unintentional injury or or maybe intentionally I don't know I can't speak for you guys. But there's a lot of you know you know messing up unintentionally and obviously that hurts your chances of scoring goals so that that coupled with just like the individual game mechanics that you would need to have to be good at this game and then being able to communicate effectively it's really not surprising that there's like a fucking pro league for this game. Yeah. I did find myself thinking while we're all just screaming and barreling into charge to the same bowl. Raking each other's caused like that. It would be super interesting to hear what it pro teams comes sounds like in this game and what kind of strategies they bring to the table 'cause there's you know there's obviously boost plates that can increase your boost capacity all over the field, and then there's some that gives you straight to hundred boost and just just knowing the routes approach would take. The field, they'll cover like how they'll communicate towards scoring goals would be really interesting because we would just shit show of like laughing and having fun and then when it was serious, we were entirely quiet. It was kind of like the round would start and somebody who'd be like I'm back and they stayed back and that was that was the length of our strategy that he asked interesting about this it's not like yeah. Someone will will stay back and be like the quote unquote goalie but the way the match works it's kind of like almost a disservice to just say all right you can be back the whole time. No matter what because there's going to be an opportunity where mids needs to charge the center and that communication has were then. You've got flow like someone that's got to come in back him up because he's now in no-man's-land and it's not like we ever really had to sit designate I always defender. It was a lot of swapping out. Yeah, it would be interesting to to actually I have never watched You know parole level rocketed before but I I'm interested to see kind of how it functions. And how you know they kind of approach. Each match it's very interesting. I wonder if the HIP boxes change because you guys were in like in. Vans and I was in a little car that works that's a good question I can't imagine that they do change but maybe they do I mean I. I've always been under the impression that differences between car models was purely aesthetics and. It didn't. Make much difference but maybe I'm wrong I mean I'm no fucking rocket league. So Yeah. Maybe maybe that is the case I do really love this game..

"The entire game is going free to play and and so let me guess William by you know book of eastport says this is a Decision her every single eastport would be free to play. Thank you so much like you know legitimately, how did it take this long? But this is GonNa be incredible for rocket. Rocket Leagues Already silic sensible like his already. So accessible pick up and play right eliminating the twenty nine, ninety, nine price tag. It's GonNa blow up like I am telling you right now like lake. It's it's a second wind in rocket, league sales like cups. For Fortnight's sort of. Very steep downward decline at the moment you know being banned from the APP store and. Now. They're saying it might be banned for next year even yeah. I don't know where does this get position in the Pantheon of sports now that it's gone free to play? Well, Rocket League was all always occupied a very unique position and east sports which it was. You know it was the most successful nonviolent eastport. There's really not sport eastport. You can argue that is as family friendly. That is as successful, right? So Even before you know is interested in operating a team in that game, I was very long on rocket league because of that market positioning because accessibility, right? Now th it's free like it I mean it's GonNa rain. It's GonNa rain. This is very, very good time to be a team owner in that game I. Believe it's very, very good time to be epic or site Onyx and have that game market. You're going to have a huge head Sara and I I think this puts more pressure. On any other developer WHO's trying to do in eastport and have a fixed price game like come on rocket. League is successful by every standard and even they dropped the pricing but but. The price year from now is, are we talking rocket league in the same breath as as league? As League of legends or are we talking Tier One East Sport and the player base has doubled and like? What is the?.

Xbox Series & PS5 Pricing

"So it's pricing that dropped for both the xbox series x the xbox series S, and the both playstation five consoles the digital, only one and the one with the disk drive. So all of the pricing has now dropped for next Gen consoles and and so this article was from N. Gadget they say xbox series is incredible value for next Gen gaming This one from the verge ps five will launch on November twelfth for four ninety nine. We have a few articles here all talking about William Can Let me just let me give our listeners a quick rundown. The to xbox consoles. The series S is going to sell for two ninety nine and they're higher end more powerful series x is going to sell for four nine. Okay. On the playstation side, their high end, which is going toe to toe with the series x but has a disk drive and everything is also four, ninety nine and they're discus version is three, ninety nine. So they don't have anything competitive at the to ninety nine level, but arguably I think it's the same hardware as the four, ninety nine minus the described.

"So anyway, long long winded way of saying you know Ashley came in and pointed that out in a you know in a very a very she she starts out of San and educate us a little bit and so from that point on. You, know for the first wave of free agency you Ashley really put our player together. We talked about sort of general qualities in terms of you know we want A. Good human beings on the team right I'm as a starting point. It's always good to start there if you can and then we really can't keep free agency where Ashley did the initial outreach. And then. Sort of made it. My purpose to get you know I love I. I would note out on the stuff anyway. So I really dove into to the League rules and and some of the policies, free agents, and there's a lot of nuance to it's actually helped us. As. We really got into the process but ultimately. Once. We once we signed signed silly assaulting got our acts on the same day last September. And brought on Brian Saint. And Rapid Jake troas coaches shortly after that, and then once guys were on board Ashley stole involved but she wanted to focus on the content also wants to be at the coaches in place. You know they. They still worked with Ashley, but they really wind up the you know the last two on the roster, Alex and Ashim. and. Then we you know we had our five. You had your five. They played well shot at the silly by the way one of my favorite people in these sports I love that man. Just, a great deal just a great did. I WANNA actually circle back to your coaching stuff a little bit. I thought that was a really interesting look at it and I've actually already recorded a podcast with what are these Sports Network Writers About Eastwards coaching, and the weird role. It sort of plays an east sports and our basic take was hey. Sports coaching is a weird place because of how young East sports is in general. There's just if about the coaches of. Traditional sports a lot of 'em former players think about a like Steve. Kerr. Who played for Michael Jordan, you can't. Really. Argue his expertise. He was better out at. You also can't argue that he should be on the court play and that's kind of how eastwards coaches followed this weird role at I wanted to ask you about I should have question about because of fire fiber, the coach of the rocket leaked tape who I think is a great example of a guy who's had a lot of competitive excess played with some of the best players of the game for what are the best organizations who's now naturally transitioning into a coaching role at I really liked that because I think we need more of those players who've had that competitive excess but have naturally. You'll better out for a long time. They seen a lot of different iterations of rocket league, and now he's ready to be a coach I just joy that we're moving to that phase of east sports where there are more players know at lease out for five years..

"Thursday the video game maker epic introduced a new direct payment system for video game fortnight bypassing developer vs that apple and Google charge but that's against both APP stores rules. So apple and Google pulled fortnight making it impossible for people to download the game or updated if they already had it in response epic sued both apple and Google, taking on two of the most powerful companies in the world and setting up a high stakes legal battle over developer fees to break it down. There needle joins us once again, Sarah thanks for coming back. Great to be here. Okay. So what's the basis of their disagreement here? Eric Payments System basically skirted the three percent that developers are usually required to pay. Apple and Google for purchase. So epic believes that apple and Google are charging. An exorbitant amount of money for developers to accept payments from consumers inside their APPs. According to epic problem is that At least with the case of apple, it's not possible for accepting payments. Any other way with Google for I could appear on android devices just not in the Google play store could. Go to other at marketplaces, but that is not even option with apple. So epochs beef goes beyond just the thirty percent fee that developers charged. But. Also the company is unhappy about the fact that apple doesn't allow it to accept payments through any other means. And what apple and Google sanded out well, the source basically say that the thirty percent is justified because they provide services to their stores such as security and user privacy. So when you and I were playing game, we spend a dollar on virtual costume for our characters say and Google takes thirty percent of that dollar leaving only seventy percent for the developer apple and Google or saying well, we we use that money to make sure that the transaction is safe that hackers don't get. Intervene and to make sure your privacy is exposed as a consumer as a result of that transaction. Even. Style epic is arguing that's too much and they clearly knew what they were doing when they dropped this do payment system right? They were set up for the consequences. It was clear they're ready for a fight because soon as apple removed for night from it, store epic filed suit and You don't want battle suit very quickly. Especially one that's as detailed does this. Particular one, it's more than sixty pages long and for each one and also epic a put out a parody video of a nineteen eighty-four apple commercial. To make its point and also a social media campaign with a a trending or hopefully for them trending hashtag raising the point that they are going after apple and Google in this way. So this is clearly a planned move on behalf well before and also keep in mind that. Tim Sweeney has been very vocal, very critical of the. Thirty percent fees for a long time. Now, this goes back years. He's not been shy expressing his dissatisfaction with the. Quote. Unquote thirty percent tax that may people call it. So it's it's almost a personal vendetta at this point, and because he has a company with one of the most popular APPs in the world, he's in a strong position. And he's also able to because the stakes for epic. Aren't that high in the sense that four night is not just available on mobile devices you can play for night on consoles and computers, and probably is fair to say that the majority of the most hardcore gamers are playing on PC's and consoles less so than on. A mobile device and they're spending time in most of their dollars on the console and computer versions of the game. So for epic, this isn't Necessarily game over if we're night is permanently removed from the stores. So epic is uniquely positioned to kind of take these companies on on behalf of all after gallopers. That's true because it has the fame notoriety has the the fan base and it has other means of getting revenue in you look at some game developers or any APP developers thurn tire business model rests on the APP stores and they don't have anything else. That is really where their bread and butter lies, and that's not the case for epic because not only does it make video games, but it also makes some. So called the unreal engine, which is very popular software for developing games all sorts of studios use. The also use it for things for movie making in architecture. So it's a totally separate business line for ethics that's quite lucrative. EPIC also owns House Party, which is a popular video chat APP it owns other games of us like the one that makes rocket league, which is the pre popular video game and epic has its own computer game store in which by the way, it does take a cut from developers, but it's cut is only twelve percent that is significantly less than thirty percents, apple and Google take. So what's next in his legal battle between epic and these big companies? Well, we'll see how the companies respond. and. If they see to have the case thrown out whether or not a judge will say, no go ahead or move on but you know we have to keep in mind. When we make all the backdrop of what makes this so fascinating is that both Google and apple are facing scrutiny from the Justice Department over antitrust issues. This has been something that's been going on for a while it also involves. Amazon and facebook. But one of the talking points throughout the congressional hearings that have recently happened on antitrust did focus very specifically on the APP store fees that apple pays. Charges sorry. Especially, the fact that apple has this walled garden where you can't have any other payment options besides his own. So this is something that is already being looked at by a much bigger entity than just at the game we're talking about Congress here so and then there's also been. European. Antitrust. Regulars are also looking into this matter because. The spotify's complaints regarding apple as well. It goes beyond just at that. We also know that net flicks has butted heads with apple as well as match the dating service. So this is really Epochs taking the lead, but it's not a new issue and is definitely something that has drawn the attention of more than just other APP developers also Governmen anti-trust. Across the Globe

Fall Guys Soars

"No but can we talk about fog is for a second oh? Yeah. Let's talk about folk is let's talk about because it's it's a good story almost unbelievable and and and dotty sports had a had a headline. This week saying fall fog is had sold two million copies on steam. And and at one point, I know because I was watching some of the streamers playing it. I think over the weekend like their servers crashed there was just there were so many people there were so much interest that they had not anticipated like I. Thought this was a joke to be honest when I first saw the game. I. Think I saw Kirstein Execute C. Street right and he has A. Reputation. For being a variety streamer, it doesn't stick to one game right and he'll often play a stupid quote unquote line. I don't mean. You know what I mean like silly games just because it produces a reaction from his audience or it's super hard or it has some mechanic that is frustrating. So he can rage like he'll play different stuff from the norm and I thought this is just excuse qc being exceed playing some silly little new game. I had honestly I had no idea up until I started digging into it. This is like. Serious brl ambition seriously long-term. Fortnight type of ambition. It seems so simple to me. You know I had also underestimated this game too. You know it had been on my radar obviously knew it was coming out. Because the studios? Reasonable reasonable things beforehand right. It's not like an indie studio in their first release. And Yeah I. Think There's three things here to point out one is. Never. Underestimate the power of two things like What is it called sack? Was it what is called sack boy on? What's the? PS, tired old but like did really well with the puppets. ignored. I met. Remember, remember the name of that game a little big planet. Yes. Yes. Yes. Never I like I learned this lesson time and time again with Viva Pinata and like never underestimate the power of little big planet styling wake it. Just it has a really broad audience appeal and you know like then pay per game just as genre is under indexed and typically does well that type of. To is I think in a lot of ways and again, I haven't played this game at I. Need to I'm behind the ball and a lot of ways I think this captures the magic of Rocket League from what I'm understanding like it's a very simple easy to explain sporting style concept, right? It's ring out right that. Recording plus here yeah, it's it's easy to get. The third thing I would say is just remember you know for people who were surprised like we are in an industry where quality matters like and you know, yes, lots of other things contributed success of a game. I. Think some are more successful, but we are also in industry where sometimes a game gets Zeitgeist, it gets the moment and. I think right now people are in the mood for something light and fun and social right and a Lotta people places. Now Light Fund single parents heavily social multiplayer game, and this ticks all the boxes right and why not you know and so do I think it's a very good game. Yes. Drink also just happened to get the gaming mentality in a moment when we wanted something like this. I think. So but the more exciting thing is what they do with it now because. In my mind, the big achievement is not selling two million. Copies or that is a huge achievement but many game sell millions of copies. I mean again, obviously many more games fail right. But lots of games console million copies. It's much harder to sustain and the real question here is, will these guys be able to sustain because that's the miracle that rocket coke off right? Rocket League took lightning in a bottle into an amazing competitive game that today is still. A very popular and even Marquee East Sport Right. You know. So I'm really curious to see how these guys built out from here, and that's part of why I WANNA look at this game very seriously because just because it simple does not mean it can't be competitive and serious, and in fact, many times simple is better if you have a clean gameplay system with deep emergent qualities that's preferred that's not a weakness right? So I'm very interested but have you I, mean, probably I'm commenting without having played it. So I'm a bit of loser. Have you played it have you tried it out I have played it. It's the kind of game like Look William I. Look at this knife, throw my hands up in the air and I go I don't get it I'm I sort of I can see the future when it comes to business in so many ways, but when it comes to like. Gassing if a game is going to be successful I decided I clearly but. That's out of my league that that's that's too much art involved. There's too much luck. There's too much orangey. That that I throw I throw sort of reason out the window and go I just don't get it right Can I. I know you have. Around successive aims. The, and I think it's reasonable framework to predict. Initial success of games. But like how do we know how long fog is is going to be around? Well you know. So so two things I think when it comes to quality of game and how it's received in the market just specifically the access of quality right I. Think it feels to me a little bit like rating and world of warcraft. Can let me explain what I mean. I'm liking. But occurs where you're going with this. It's like when you go to raid, there's lots of stuff you can do right. You can gear up, you can practice you can make sure you're with a group that you know like. That you know you're you're one of the few. You're like only one of two warlocks in the groups say a better chance of getting. You can do lot of things that like you can have game playing on Credit Mama the end of the day the gear drops or it doesn't know what I mean and and that's a bit when I feel like with game on. Quality is good developers eventually get hits just like if you rate enough, you eventually get your gear, but there is this unpredictable element to it, and so when I try to do in the book with the Omens Framework which I'm very proud of I really gets the best framework in the book is it doesn't. Omens. Doesn't really talk about quality the game it says take. That as agnostic, you just that subjective there's too much going on like you know you have to set that. Aside, it says water the business factors that determine the trajectory of the game right and those are now the books out I can talk about opportunities for cloning or competition monetization ecosystem network effects, switching costs, and you know I'll be honest. I don't see a game. Like fall guys taking many of those buckets, right because I think this game is relatively easy to clone Riley. Now that the genres out there can get knocked off pretty easily right it's not a free to play game right now you have to pay to buy it, and for this sort of panic accessible mode, I would have much preferred to see a micro transaction driven model. There's no ecosystem around it for competitive play or endorsement anything. There's a lot of celebrities instruments playing, but there's nothing like. Structure paid advertising sector to lock people end. So when this stops being the flavor does your people will migrate off. The network effects are partially there but not really there for this game because it's random matchmaking with outclassing is my understanding. So and switching costs, there's lots of stuff to unlock, but it doesn't fundamentally change the abilities of your player and the skills. This is maybe the game place where the game is the strongest because the skills you develop a relatively unique, you know what I mean. So that's a fast pass through the framework. But when I see is a game that doesn't. have.

One of the Biggest Tekken Tournaments of All Time Never Paid Anyone

"Well over a year ago in March of two, thousand and nineteen, a series of East sports events were held in Khobar Saudi, Arabia including. The True Gaming Tekken invitational this single tournament featured a prize of one hundred, ten thousand dollars USD, which was then the single largest prize pool in taking history for a little context, the two thousand eighteen technical tour finals at a prize pool of Twenty Five K. and Evokes Tekken Prize. Pools are even lower than that and heavy hitters from around the world came to participate. In this thing, I'm talking to likes of Don's knee Chanel. Roma. Are Slash you get the picture from a production standpoint the true gaming tech invitational grave they had an awesome stage set up the stream quality was good. The had commentator and analyst desk great camerawork was clean and in terms of the actual game play competitively, the tournament was great i. mean we saw some of the best players of all time from all around the world give us some unforgettable moments. But after all that confetti was cleaned up after the stage was dismantled in after the community's attention shifted to other events there remained one big problem. Apparently nobody paid. Now this all hit the public's attention in a big way only recently when tech master provident fighting game player and one of the invitees to the gaming tech invitational tweeted about not receiving his prize money from a different event that was organized by the same people. Now, as far as the true gaming tech invitational goes the one with one hundred, Thousand Dollar Prize Pool I talked to tech and master about it, and he said that communication between the players who are owed money in the company who produced the event true gaming hasn't exactly been productive when it comes to when how or infant if they'll get their prize after one month. A number to contact with and every time the new right it's. Like on the process of giving you the process guys. we'd be coming back to you on. Data to and every time like the guy is saying, he did not receive any funding for the first. He's promised to receive it a next month. Don't want everytime delays rate rate until. One year happened instead even. One year under half extra. Here's the thing though true gaming say that they were hired just to produce the event and that the prize money has nothing to do with them at all I managed to get in contact with a guy named a Med almost STAFA. Who is the head of business development at true gaming and he says that the true gaming tech invitatinal took place within a larger event called. Gamers con. He told me that the owner operator of that event, a company called. Tail Events Exhibitions Management Co is responsible for the prize money we correspond over email about it and let me read to you what he told me quote true gaming's role in the event was to operate the competitions and gaming centered activities that have relied on our gaming industry knowledge and know-how. Our team has been contacted by the winners and his forwarded their grievances to k all A and have shared all contact information directly Takeo so that there is a direct. Line of communication and no delay caused by layered communications in the later email he also told me quote we've tried to finalize this matter on numerous occasions. We were even under the impression that it was going to conclude a sooner time and we are completely taken aback by how all have. Let this drag on for so long and quote worth noting here that shortly after I got in contact with gaming, they released a public statement about the matter that was. Very much in line with what they told me privately as far as this K- All events exhibitions management company goes that's where the trail goes a little cold for me I tried calling them with a number on their website and for me it didn't work I tried tweeting out I've emailed them and I tried to use a contact form on their website that is broken apparently so far as of the filming of this video I haven't heard anything back from them. Hubbert. Ladies Tom. Blood I can mean a look at a High Horse Shukran your call cannot be completed as dialed. Please make sure you enter the correct number. It's probably also worth noting here that there were a bunch of other invitational tournaments that took place on the same weekend within this gamers con that we're all organized by true gaming there was rocket league invitational. There was a beep invitation on their Mash Bros invitation and like I said, they were all organized by true gaming who seem to be a company who do everything from eastport centric youtube videos to mainstream game reviews to event production. Now, let's just back up for a quick second. Because there are other entities involved in this issue beyond just the players true gaming and this K- All events and Exhibitions Management Company, and I'm talking about agencies for the Saudi Arabian government see according to Tech and master about six months after the event when it became clear that they weren't going to get their prize money anytime soon, a lot of deep participants in the gaming, Tech. Invitational. Got Together an organized to try to figure out what their next steps they went to a guy who goes by the tag burke came and he contacted to Saudi Arabian government agencies namely, the General Entertainment Authority in Saudi Arabia and more pointedly. The Saudi Arabian Federation for Electric Intellectual Sports see the true gaming invitational had to be sanctioned by these bodies in order to put on their event in the first place and as to who this Berkane guy is. He is a Saudi Arabian eastport seen community leader and individual player manager who has served as a sort of go between between the players, the T os, and the government agencies that oversee East sports in Saudi Arabia and he told me that he's been in contact with those government agencies and they are actively investigating this situation. As we speak I have conducted the federation on behalf of some of the players and they. Did investigate the issue and I believe they have officially contacted all the parties involved in this case on soon, they would return resolve at least from where I'm sitting it's not going to be easy to figure out who's actually on the hook for this money according to Tech Master Burt. CAIN and some other folks I spoke to nobody actually signed any kind of contract or documentation that stipulated how when or I guess technically even if they would get paid out this prize money according to Burke Cain East sports in Saudi Arabia is still very much in a phase where contracts are not the standard sports itself and Saudi is still new. and. It started based on community efforts where almost everything was based on trust. That moved along when he sports stuff to grow on many companies started to throw big huge ovens. Everyone trusts what's being advertised after all the low in Saudi will hold you accountable for what you advertise. Let's say trust is what? being practiced here in Saudi I do believe that should change and perhaps tap. Last year will rise the awareness in the community

Rocket League goes free-to-play, but only on the Epic Games Store

"The biggest games the last few years has finally gone free to play Soccer meets rocket cars. It is Rocket League. The Scion IQ scree are Cy Onyx. The creators of Rocket League were bought by epic games last year. So this movie isn't a surprising one rocket leave will be leaving the steam launcher but still supported if you bought it there and will now be exclusive on the epic launcher for PC. Does this make more people actually get into the Rocket League? Yes, I think that every time something's gone free It's a play. I think that it is only boosted, at least in the short term. It's player base. I think that's the future of EA sports is like if a game could be. I think Overwatch has run into it a lot where I can't believe they've gone as long as they have and not announced over watched three to play like Overwatch two was first announced. They should have also filed it up with Oh, and by the way, the regular game is free to play now, having to go free actually puts it on my radar as a consideration to actually download and try playing because I played it before I'm so bad at it. And I'm not gonna spend money to suck that bad. But I was like that bad for free.

"Robin Hood where it's like you can you can make these but the people does it resonate people go for it or is it sort of to to old industy to really? Get that get that reaction I do think there's something there. I think like I think a developer will tap that at some point and figure out what it looks like I'm not super interested in like multiplayer RPG stuff. But if if that could have been an idea for a game, I could solo and it was a little from softy in terms of. Armor and go you're making you're making up what the what the game would have been based on a handful of sentences you know and it's it's fun to imagine that it's like what that could have been could have also just been like. Like kind of. Copy. Paste. Monster Hundred knockoff with just different. Direction but right and that's I. Think I might have said this on the show last week even as that like for every one game you hear about that got canceled. There's you know a dozen more you didn't right and there's a dozen canceled games that we have no nothing about and don't necessarily want or need, and there's no reason to. Put the one we did hear about on a pedestal necessarily I. Think with this one specifically, it's like you you bring in this this. Talent. Video game designer rank. Has a great pedigree and sort of saddle him for a year and then let him in he leaves like A. Huge disappointment. That's that's the bummer to me of the story because like, yeah like obviously development there they're throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks and there's you know I've read so many stories of devs heartbreaking stories of deb's who have pitched games to studios using an Ip that the studio owns and being like, Hey, here is your mock metro game you know and then Nintendo's no thanks are like you know, hey, Sony here's you know here's here's a version of APE escape that we wanna do and someone's like no. That's bomber to hear about that. I mean it's it's it's the same. I would. I would say with movies where like you know these are you look at games or big budget movies where like this is entertainment and this is art, but it's also a business in the day cost so much money to make that if they're not, you know if they don't. If they don't return was put into amidst it's A. Cataclysmic. For a company and I think there's Extremely rigid like if it ain't broke, don't fix it or like don't don't color outside the lines like don't. Don't spend millions of dollars experimenting and trying something that isn't like proven to work and like you look at sort of. You be soft games have that kind of open world game where you may be climbed some sort of tower to unlock sections of the map, and then you go do main story missions but also optional outposts or like you find collectibles and it's like these are things that have been. Demonstrated that they that they work in the games that have them in their so millions of copies and it's like, why would you? Why would you do that or did you throw that out? You know why would you try something completely new? Yeah. But the thing that bugs me at least is that you sort of in right they sort of acknowledged that that that has limitations with when they tug at your office asking screened. In they came back with the origins and it was so so different and got such a positive reception and that was in twenty seventeen I. Think. So this thing that happened since then was they put out, they put out Tom Clancy's ghost recon wild lands, which was like a huge hit people love and then they were like, okay. Now, we're back with breakpoint which just was like a huge flop like just complete like that. Completely. Yeah and it was and it seemed like they were really trying to. I guess do things right from the from the GECKO Like Bay announced it seem really transparent and really community driven. But I think they just there was a lot of micro transactions and stuff in there and a lot of just kind of a salute grind that didn't. Wasn't supported by a game I. Think I wasn't. Yes. Close in on that. But Yeah I think what's interesting too is that like we a look at the sales of Gosta Sushi minutes fast selling new IP on playstation and I think it absolutely sort of revisits a lot of the original roots of what made us love assassin's creed to begin with and builds upon them in a completely new direction. But it is like quintessentially kind of old school assassin's creed in a lot of ways and I really dig it for that and people love that game right now and I think that that really shows that there's there's a testament to revisiting that concept and I think with ubisoft specifically, they ran it into the ground and there were there were some years where we are getting like multiple assassin's creed games like the euro we got you know what was it three and then also a a new one on Vita like. There were side stories and mobile games and hand games and comics, and this it was just like kind of this oversaturation n- issue was that it's so much of it connected back to this concurrent lower that took place in modern times that the audience was I wanNa say device Yvonne is seems like every time you talk to people about keep the crap out of here. And then they made a bad movie that was just like we're going to put as much animus in there as we can. You right guys and we're like, no. That like. There was franchise fatigue with that but I don't think that's the core concept of what it's like to explore world like that is something that we're tired of and I think goes to Sushi is a good example of taking that revitalizing it stripping away the parts people don't necessarily care too much about and making it a special event. Again, I think that we're already going to start to see fatigue on the new iteration of assassin's creed were now in the sort of third model of it, and I think if they put out another one next year that's going to be you know we're GONNA have four. Sort of structurally similar newest Asas Creek Games that frankly kind of shoe away from the you know the feeling of being an assassin again because instead running around with a level seventy, five acts like it's it's just it's sort of changed so. We're revelation like literally woke me up in the middle of the night heavyset. Would no it wasn't. It was actually a far cry revelation. But I saw it hit me that there's the I like far cry three I. Love that game. I adore it. I just thought it. Was On sale a couple of weeks ago and just jump back into it. This is great. I don't know what it is I, like about it. And it hit me that that the new one is the first one. If you count blood drag the first one since blood dragon or since far cry three just set an island and something about seems so much more see like it's a stupid like it's it's it's a stupid comparison draw like it's very simple but the idea of I think just the world being consolidated on this on one landmass as opposed to being like, oh you're GonNa Valley and there's mountains on the side and you can't go up them. It's sort of like That's a really good way of putting it especially. I mean they did that in need in far cry five with Montana. Did it in primal? They did it in four with the Himalayas they're essentially creating invisible. Political walls around the player whereas in far far cry three. There's a narrative excuse which is if you go too far, you'll drown. But what I like about for three is that you had that massive like a struck. Massive space to play to play in this huge playground. But there's also all these little like inlets and islands all over the place and they're just pocketed, and there's be like one treasure on them like it sort of feels like wind waker with guns you know. Yeah I don't know I just I. Guess I'm I'm. I say this with most of our cries where I'm like Oh cautiously. Optimistic. I'm I really didn't like five I. Don't know what it was about it it just maybe it's the fact that it's just you know in America rooted in American. Quasi politics but not really just at a time when that's not what I want to think about. But let me and it was it like to grounded in its of like it play by the rules of what is available in Montana and that's not super interesting outside of like you don't. You don't necessarily get the spectrum of flora and fauna in a situation like that like I think you and I, were talking like Oh maybe if there's like A like some insane, and this is long before like tiger king aired but we're like, what if there was like this is insane guy that lives there and he has like a like a cocaine.

"rocket league" Discussed on The Esports Minute

"Rocket League is finally going to play. I'm dreams. Is The eastwards minute? Pres anybody sports network. It's about time after songs was acquired by epic Games in May of two nineteen, it seemed like rock league was poised to move to the free to play model. That was so successful fortnight. But while rocky introduced a similar item shop, the game still cost twenty bucks. It's not a lot. Compared to traditional sixty dollar cost bowed most battle rows free to play. It still posed a hurdle. On Tuesday south six announced the game going purely free to play, and would also be adding and support a creator coats for rockabilly content creators, this huge game as well bring renewed interest as people played around. The game will pick up the sticks once again. Both the good also comes a move off steam, which may be good, too, but I'm sure. A lot of gamers are totally stoked about it. This is a long time coming, but free rock league will only be available on the epic game store while steam as a sentimental home for gamers had called Tissue Valve. Product is still a good thing especially if it means, titles are going free to play when they show up on epic for people who paid for the game. Game like me three times. They'll get every deal. See Up to the point of going to play. I was always happy to support the game and I'm glad the player base will shoot up soon. In other rocket League News, the sports scene has gone through a lot of flux. Major organs left, but then liquid joined in with a revamped structure today, energy also announced an interesting new move that as far as I know is a first of its kind in east, sports. Shopping the naming rights to the Rocket League team. Trying to find a brand sponsor, likely an automotive company, one of the best teams of the game, energy recently signed cloud nine star squishy muffins to replace four time champion Turbo. Pulsa and Archie is looking for a multi year deal in the six figures annually. That's according to energy. President Brett Lautenbach in an interview with Sport Business Journal's Adam Stern London boxes. Bray response has been positive as I mentioned. This seems like a unique situation in the past teams came directly from brands like South Korean. Telecom or galaxy, but I don't recall an organization shopping. Just one of the ORG teams for unique naming rights deal. Looked to be proved wrong, however, so my email below the show if you have an example of this,

"Wasn't it and correct me from Ron wasn't some of the folks from the Overwatch League management side that went to do east sports management at Sonics I believe I'm correct I won't name names but they did come from overwatch. League so. That's got to say something, and so that this this outcome here is not surprising. What is shocking is that we're seeing a letter from a group of owners. I th I would've thought that this letter for sure would have come from Overwatch League owners first before any other and in fact is coming from rocket league owners, which I would have expected a little bit less I guess I'm that surprise me a bit rate. That, we've seen leagues that on the outside are suffering far far more like rockabilly. Anything has thrived as a league. It seems from the outside but yet owners here seem more vocal Austin. What do you make of it? It's interesting I. Don't you know I'm not an expert? When it comes to the professional side nearly as much is in the way we play recreational dive, but I like. I, know that there's a lot to be defined conscious, pro side, and how pro, sports. Sports specifically interact.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare: Completing All 3 Contracts in Warzone Battle Royale

"Will. You've been playing some new colleague. I have been called Kadoi Quad Kadoi wars zoning the new battle royale from the makers of call of duty modern warfare infinity ward. I thought it's called duty. Had a battle royale mode already so obviously. I don't know much about this. You are a longtime pudgy player. So yeah you want to explain how it works. Yes explain how it works. Give us give us the so. They did a battle royale last year. with Block ups for it was really hot for like two weeks and then people stopped being destroyed and then disappeared basically. I mean there's still people that play it on the rag but it had problems with like sound model and stuff like that. The folks at Trae Art. I think did a really good. Gd Talk last year explaining what they learned from the first rather the battle royale which is basically like in a first person game where you're being unto constantly it turns out sound is really important and they focused a lot on that like the sound bottle in modern warfare warzone is is much much better. It's still not you know I. It's it's still not perfect. None of these models Arkansas. You're doing math to fool people's brains into thinking they hear sounds up and down and behind them when they're wearing headphones and since cod is a console game it has to work with. Speaker and TV's as well as funds like there's not as good as your pc only But it's really neat so you drop in one hundred and fifty players solo mode now and they have a three player team mode a Hundred Years. You get chucked out of the plane you. The map is basically like It's kind of like a mash up of all of the call of duty or a lot of the multiplayer maps. So there's there's like a quarry section and there's a TV station section and there's a bone yard section and all these different like kind of You know Classic Cod death match. Maps are either expanded or kind of injected as kind of like showcase locations in the larger battle. Royale actual royale map is really big as it would have to be rich people but the really interesting thing that they've done is they've added a bunch of mechanics. They get you back in the game if your squad game and you get knocked out so or in a solar game for that matter so for example you get knocked somebody somebody kills you for your teammates can get you back up in in. Pudgy or I think four nights all does this. You're out busy. You Watch your friends play for the next twenty or thirty minutes in this thing called the Gulag where you're in a rock style. Prison shower there to players started on either ends. You have a shower is where you lost me. Look man you went to prison shower part. I don't talk right. It's like it's the show. It is literally looks like the shower. Prison the prison shower from the rock. So so you have to like to one man leaves. The Guy who leaves gets to bears back in on his friends if you suck. Yeah so this is rocket league. It's Thunderdome but it's essentially like you're you're a subcategory of death match happening coinciding with this large fifty. Were all the people who are waiting at rocket. Leak or rocket arena not rocket arena. He's very rocket well in that rocket. Arena way like the people who are waiting for their turn to fight are standing up around the edge of the shower looking down from the guards gallery throwing rocks at the people who are fighting so like and if like you and one of your teammates gets knocked they'll be up in the arena and they can tell you which way because it's basically like doted three lanes there's right mid and last so like if you have a guy in the arena in the gallery that telling you which way the opponents going you've a pretty big advantage you have like a grenade you have a flash bang or a smoke grenade or something like that but mostly you have like a pistol or a shotgun or or whatever and then you have to murder that person if you go back in and you get back and then your team can get in world currency Like you find cash when you kill people you like cash part of diluting process and you can buy them back in at a by station for like forty five hundred Docs. It's really neat. They did a bunch of stuff to simplify. There's no attachments. They have to pick up the guns. You can you. The guns are coated like a while so like you have gray green blue purple legend gold or orange legendary loot and all that means is like the low doubts on them. So like they'll have different grips of different muscles. They'll different scopes so you don't have to be worrying about like does this angled grip going this gun or do i. Is it better on this gun? What would I do with all this stuff? The things take literally hundreds of hours to learn a game like a g are are much more straightforward. It's been really fun. I've really been enjoying an added Solos yesterday. Haven't had a chance to check that out yet. But I'm going to do it and this is free to play free to play so if you already own God modern warfare. It'll show up as a menu item if you don't it's like an eighty or one hundred gig download. I assume because the map is enormous and Let's see if you are a fan of the duty years where they have a bunch of weird like voice packs and Snoop. Dogg boys packs and a bunch of like. We'd leave crosshairs for your guns. I'm sorry to tell you that that is not the case. This is not one of those years. So hopefully the we'd leave. Crosshairs will come back next year and calling me. It's not health. Pack base it's health region so you have health jen your armor. Which is the most important kind of stat? You have rather than having a helmet and a chesapeake like you do in most games Basically you just have these metal plates you jammed to invest in front of your shirt and those three of those gives you one hundred percent armor basically and you can carry extra armor around which is nice. If you're in the middle fights and stuff like that it's it's IT'S A. They did a really nice job with. It's a really neat. It's a really neat. About how do you have a sense that they're going to avoid the pitfalls of the other battle Royale Games in terms of like keeping maps updated? Ed like changing over You know some nursing and keeping the the weapons in line Do you have a sensor that I know it's early So it's it's difficult to say my assumption is they're gonNA do one. Map is like adding maps is a neat thing if you look at what it asks. Legends is done when they add a new map. The old one goes away for a while and then they bring the new one back with some changes. So they're kind of cycling back and forth Fortnight has been constantly evolving. Their map huggies keeps adding new maps. And that kind of fragments. The player base every time they do it which seems like a bad thing when the player base shrinking so My I I think it's too early for a lot of that stuff to say until they find out what the stable audiences you know the games a week and a half old at this point so it's unclear It's unclear if if people are GONNA stick with we won't know people are going to stick with it for a month probably gets But the other nice thing is it ties into the existing call of duty. Modern warfare battle pass so the mud. It is if you buy into the battle pass in one place then you can use it in both the normal. Dm Game and also the battle royale so it's not like it's not like there's a subscription the cosmetic stuff seems pretty reasonably priced there. Aren't there aren't loop boxes like they? They've done a pretty good job. I it seems like I think that would be pleasant to Blaine. Would make you feel skis for playing unfortunate. Call of duty unfortunate play mechanics.

"There is a few different things I wanted to go over. I guess before we get like super into like you know Oh rock league itself actually went ahead and research just some stuff about <hes> supersonic acrobatic rocket rocket powered battle cars <hes> MHM which was a two thousand eight Prequel to rocket league <hes> and you guys haven't played that game at all right. NOPE NOPE I haven't either <hes> so I really did not know anything about the game at all besides that it was the Prequel to rocket league so I don't know how it plays. I don't know how it feels. Just know how it looks and it just looks like a less detailed version of rock league really <hes> with the weird classic field that you play on with the goals those that are separate from like the actual walls so I went ahead and looked up like the metacritic score so I was curious like 'cause. I never heard about that but I know that there's I fans of it because you know if you look on youtube you see videos of this if you look it up of people playing in doing tricks and all kinds of crazy stuff so I was really curious like what the backstory the story was with this and I looked up at metacritic score and actually has a sixty seven on metacritic which basically shows it had mixed reviews. It wasn't really <hes> you know extremely positively reviewed but it also wasn't like super negative. That's going to drop the rating down to like you know fifty s or forty s that's generally where Mediocre Games are this. One was kind of just in the middle there and I was reading through some of the reviews because I was curious to see if rocket league addressed like some of the concerns or maybe some of the thoughts that you know these critics basically you wrote about back then so this is what <hes> Gamespot said in their review. I guess this was just kind of a summary. I was just grabbing the summaries off of the <hes>. The metacritic page and Gamespot said this blend of vehicular combat and soccer is fun in short sessions but it's too frustrating to offer much much long-term appeal <hes> obviously it's been four years since rock league has come out and were still playing it so and usually when we play we play. Hey at for probably a couple hours so we we kind of see right there that Rocco League already kind of improved over the original game and obviously this is person to person but I think rocket league in long sessions is good. I think for me personally I kinda start getting not doc great after a certain point in time <hes> and then you kinda have to stop but I don't find rocket league frustrating so it's it's. It's kind of neat to see that you know while Sonics was developing this game. It seems like they definitely tweet you know the game play mechanics enough to <hes> to make it more of like a fun game to play not like a frustrating game apply <hes> I also had another one from from one up. It said supersonic seems a tad over priced at fifteen dollars which I think that's what rocket leagues priced at now correct prime close thirty. If you want twenty you'll see history d._l._C. Twenty with the like Vanilla. I can believe that yeah if it has some elements. I'm sure it's more than that. That's just a guess though yeah also yeah that's true and it's also important to note that that back then in two thousand eight were not release like we probably don't see the same amount of like free updates like rockabilly gets you know in terms terms of game plan all that so basically back then you pretty much got what you got. I mean if the game didn't have a lot of content than you know is it. You're you're not really going to get a ton of free updates that are going to add to the longevity of the game <hes> so it says you know supersonics seems to tattoo price to fifteen dollars especially actually considering the Ni- featureless multiplayer and bland aesthetics but the single player is short and sweet and the core mechanics are simple and rewarding so kind kind of bit. It's kind of a little <hes> you know different from the last passage because this is saying it's simple. The mechanics are simple and rewarding so little you know person person to person <hes>. I thought it was interesting though how they're saying that you know the online was kind of barebones where rocket league focused almost entirely online online <hes> so that was a adjustment that they made <hes> bland aesthetics. Obviously I think Rocket League pops pretty good. I think the there's a lot of colors onscreen when you're playing like us and disable Hana winter weather mix gachet can if you want to stay competitive. Oh yeah that yeah so I thought that was kind of cool it kind of shows that the last game kind of lacked multiplayer features <hes> this one was from cheat code central supersonic acrobatic rocket power battle cars delivers a unique concept that stands out among the increasingly populated downloadable pack. It's too bad this. This charm wears off quickly resulting in a game that feels more like a novelty than a crafty idea brought to realization that was last one I grabbed and I thought that one really stood out to me too because because I mean obviously rocket league has had a really good for year run. I think that it's really just gotten stronger and stronger as the years have gone by and I don't think the charm has worn off at all in fact I think the competition levels have increased and I think that <hes> you know the the more more and more you play I mean I think that maybe I've kind of hit my peak awhile ago <hes> but you know I. I don't think the I feel like this is like a really well thought got out game. <hes> that's no more it's like it's not a novelty anymore. If it was back then <hes> it's really become a game of its own and you know highly competitive game so <hes> I think there's a lot of substance to it. So that's another improvement that it appears that they made <hes> you know and there's obviously a big <hes> competitive community for it so I was Kinda. Curious <hes> S to Hell Rocket League got you know it's I guess how you know Sonics was able to bring rocket league back and it it basically was the march of of two thousand seventeen scientists confirmed that there is going to be a sequel <hes> but it was still kind of early in development <hes> still kinda going through you know it's developmental stages stages <hes> and they had a difficult time convincing a publisher to get on board so they weren't really able to pitch the idea. The first game probably didn't do great <hes> at least not got you know great enough to warrant someone to publish it <hes> and they also are kind of you know the kind of lacked the capital to do it themselves. <hes> which you know that was kind of an unfortunate situation that they were in but throughout the years ever since that game came out <hes> they were working working on projects and there are basically just you know being a contractor for you know different games and all that just to kind of gain the funds back in order to start publishing their own stuff again and then that's kind of how rocky came to be <hes> when that finally released so I thought that was pretty cool <hes> and I just I I wonder if the <hes> the publishers that didn't decide to take that game on. I wonder if they're kicking themselves now. After how Successful Rocket League has become in and you know to the point that we're still talking about it now and they're still a massive player base. <hes> it became a hit so I thought that was pretty cool. Now this next one I kind of wanted to to ask you guys. <hes> what was your first impressions of Rocket League <hes> for me <hes> right away <hes> like the music kind of stood out. It's like electric vibe Blah Blah Blah battle <hes> yeah it looked beautiful. I looking at it. <hes> you know when you play that gritty type of G._T._e.. Five type game and you look at this Brighton Vibrant <hes> rapidly. We have in front of us now like wow. This Lord when I start experiencing it it's just one of one of those things you don't have to invest a whole lot of time in in a in a sitting you know you can have you have a satisfying experience over over just <hes> maybe half an hour. That's your good for the night yeah yeah I feel the same way. Actually <hes> I feel like for some games it takes so long to boot the game up to get matched to get to finally get into the game <hes> rockabilly. Everything just seems so streamlining quick. It's like you can hop on play a few games and be done <hes>. It just feels like there's no hassle. It's quick. It's satisfying. If you know obviously if you're winning <hes> and then you're you can go about your business <hes> so I like that too John. What was your first impressions Iraqi League? I was excited. It's car soccer. Come on you can't not half <unk> idea but when I I played it yeah I do not know of doing flying impossible. It was really tough <hes> yeah. I just didn't think I would ever get get a struggling so much but ah look we can actually get shots and stuff. Oh Yeah Yeah definitely can <hes> my first impression was holy the crap these controls suck <hes> I did not think like we first had our first few matches. I didn't think that we're going to play it for a long time. I thought this was going to be something thing that you know we play a couple of times but then Kinda move on like it's just one of those things we get a few laughs out of kind of like gang beast right <hes> God yes yeah Friday the thirteenth another story. That's another he can't but that's that's some that's kind of how I viewed it. <hes> I thought it was neat cool concept <hes> I thought the Gameplay was really slow though you have these rocket boosters but you had to wait for the ball to bounce in in order to hit it <hes> I dunno I just I'd never I never imagined that you know four years down the line. It would be a game that I couldn't imagine myself like without <hes> and I think that probably the biggest change for us was once we started using the rocket boosting to like go up and hit the ball because at first few weeks really of just waiting for the ball to bounce and then timing it. It's looking back. It's so crazy it's like how did we play like that. Why did we play that? And how did we win. Was the bigger question region <hes> so yeah essentially yeah. That's what it felt like so I saw it was really weird and I thought that the game just didn't control well enough <hes> to really be like <hes>. I guess like a mainstay for me. <HES> and I ended up being wrong so it was a I. I don't know it's just it was really strange because it was not. It was wasn't like anything else. We played before <hes> especially not together and we I'm pretty sure are I readily games. Were me and you play together. Gather <hes> and yeah. It was just I don't know I I thought that the gameplay mechanics were just a little bit too sloppy to <hes> to actually a master <hes> but ended up it ended up turning out and you know we all have fun playing it and it's <hes> it's it's you know still one of my favorite games <hes> to this day <hes> so I wanted you guys to Kinda because I kind of briefly went into it there. <hes> I guess reminisce about the days of Vanilla Rocket League right this before you know updates before mutate irs you know just pure unadulterated rapidly <hes> and that was like like I said not being able to rocket boost I kind of consider that rocket Vanilla Rocket League <hes> but just like just like other things too so <hes> so are you guys like memories. I Guess Vanilla Rocket League Fennell. It's that's a Tita yeah well..

"How did we not see this coming sort of obvious thought says Hello yesterday? It was announced. We went over that news that this awesome studio behind rocket league. And also to Jeremy Dunham come and how do we how do we not see it coming for starters? And good point. I haven't heard much on this. But ultimately asked do you think we'll see rocket league adopt fortnight's free to play mode when it comes to the store later this year? They've already adopted the battle pass with their own rocket pass along with the season and bring different game modes. That's a really interesting point and thought about that. Yeah. You could just make the core. Like, here's say here, the balls in the cars, but let's just say here the balls in the car. Grandpa. That's never played rocket. Got me back. Yeah. They could probably just there's a way to do it. There's a way to monetize skins and stuff and make that core gameplay free and fun. And I think that's I think that's a good idea. Stephen with P H great. Yeah. Yeah. I think it's very plausible. I think that's the first thing we're all gonna start asking as you see the store exclusively stuff. But then you're like, wait. What does this mean for rocket league itself? I mean, that's the most important news because it's not just on PC. Does it change the console strategy? I forget if I included a question about that now. But some of that was coming in like wait just mean, it's only going to be PC or late. No. I mean, you might start out that way it could four nights on all platforms too. But yeah, I think there's a very strong chance that we will see at the very least free play elements. If not maybe that's the entire model. I mean, frankly, I think rocket league is it's probably the perfect thing to do right now. Which is presuming there's not some huge massive updates, and maybe rocket to or whatever that when this comes the epic game stores say, you know, what it's free to play by the way now. And here's how you get all the other stuff, and I don't know though, revenue model is I mean the game is probably still selling. So, but I definitely think there's a strong cheap when it plateaus. It'll that's when the free play thing would maybe happened. That's what I would. Yeah. I mean, it's been out for a long time. Yeah. Yeah. But it's a very popular worldwide game. So I don't have those numbers. Jeremy Dunham give me a call. Let me know what you face up of the question, then will quote it here on the show. But I know I think it's a really good point and very plausible very plausible going to get next. Question comes in from Chris from Richmond Virginia. Good morning with the board land street gameplay reveal the unthinkable has happened fine hype for Orleans game. I say on thinkable because I've always hated cell shaded graphics part of that hate stems from the bore ones or lands one reveal over a decade ago. Are there any game genres or styles that you used to hate? But now will. But now you love or least will try, and what made you change your mind me, Dr. I didn't know if it's okay. For me, the initial borderlands one game informer cover story, which was September two thousand seven give me a whole lot of false hype. And crushed dreams the game wasn't cell shaded on the covers referring to and it looked damn cool. I couldn't wait this. Then came the delays. The game was reimagined and the iconic cell shaded style took root. I was furious..

"And it's twelve entity right here using on real engine. I think it's twelve percents. So you can you can bring down that number by eighteen percent. So without getting into too much math this morning. Let's do it. The developers are making in the actually it's factual. They're making a lot more money as long as the sales come through. I mean, if it were to sell more on steam than than make potentially more, but you get the idea games like world wars ear selling atone. So I'm not you want developers that money more than. Meeting day. If the decision is being made because I run a team of developers who make amazing things, and I don't wanna have to lay off part of the our team. I don't wanna have to change that the more money. You have the more. You do maybe make brand new franchise. And if it's in the spirit of that than I I'm happy to deal without some of these features. And that's really the main thing. I see. Yeah. Especially with all the crunch stuff coming out, you want to think of the people making these games. Yeah. So that's the story that I'm looking forward to being told which is maybe after we get enough developers out there. We see World War Z division. Choose on it. Maybe the story deepens a bit more. And they come back. Look, man. We just we have more cash coming in. Now, here's our putting it to use. I mean, I don't know if we'll get that. See? But wouldn't that be nice was part of it? So I know there's things missing. And they have a ways to go. But I it's not like we're asking to go play rocket league on stadia which happen Google could have bought them by the Wellman and did it. Now think about that that could be Eliah worse. Now, you could still play it on your though. But you'd have to invest in some of that stuff. All right. Let's move on to our next story. There's been sounds aboard. Lance to renews. I'm sure y'all know has officially been shown in full game play glory. We were at the event we were we'll talk a little bit about that. But there's been a ton of interviews. I wanted to capture a couple of things that stuck out to me. The first thing PC gamer was talking to Paul sage the creative director about the main question Borland's three and it will last for. Over thirty hours, if you'd be let's get into the very specifics here. But what Paul had said was if you be line moorlands three through. I mean be lining through it. It might take you thirty hours to complete the main story. So he's Ehlo. Have you rush through this and probably doing it's thirty hours? This has been a day's gone discussion to. Yeah. Did you hear that? They're like oh was critical path has thirty. Yeah. Okay. I think most people who've been like, no different issues almost people arguing you can't do that. Yeah. Because of somewhat the upgrade and stuff. Yes. Very hard to do from what I've heard, but they've passionate so knows. So just as a point of reference that's pretty in line with Borland's to is what PC gamer says, according to the source how long to beat you can go there for player averages. And the average for the main story in borderlands two according to several hundred players thirty one hour, so you probably have players going through repeating stuff. So it seems like Frank. They they took Borland's too. They know that the main main passed off they're gonna make a game of that size..

Rocket League Developer Acquired By Epic Games

"All right. Let's get into the first big story epic his bought the rocket league developer Siahaan IX this happened. Just after yesterday's show pulled some of the information from Michael mcwhirter over at Palley gone. So yeah, epic games. Y'all know the maker of a fortnight on real engine is acquiring Cyanika maker of rocket league. They've actually worked with on real and epic over the years. But of course, rocket league many of you know, is you're running around a stadium with RC car. So here's the news grandpa describing. Oh, little car. Is it you're right. I'm actually not like an avid rocket league player. I would be as offense Offense say. se as I also, by the way, Jeremy Donham full disclosure, good friend and beyond founder over at John, and friend of the show here. Jeremy Dunham as Parsi onyx got a chance to congratulate him. So if you're out there listening, Jeremy everybody over there congrats. But let's get into what the news is. So first of all, they're acquiring them deal is still kind of coming together. But then the big news. Of course that people are wondering what's this mean for a rocket league on steam, what's it mean for the EPA game store? I'm sure that's the strategy only a little bit. It's been said so far, but what has said or actually this came way of Papa gone, right? Yes. I was wondering quote, anyway, let's read the quote, the came will remain on sale on other platforms, including steam in the meantime, according to the press release itself. Epic insight onic say the game will continue to support on steam for all purchasers, but the language sounds like rocket league will become an EPA game store exclusive on P C. And they haven't said this specifically, that's why I was making sure we have more quotes coming. And and what the source of that was so pollyanna reached out for clarification on that other. And then I'm gonna ask you for your. So what they said sign. It says in short nothing will change at all. This is regarding existing customers that was part of the leading question. They said over at scientists were still committed to providing rocket league with frequent updates that have new features new content and new ways to play the game for as long as you'll have us in the long term. We expect to bring rocket league to the game store and to leverage our new relationship to grow the game in ways, we couldn't do on our own before we believe that bring rocket league to new audiences with more support is a win for

Rocket League Developer Acquired By Epic Games

"Epoch games is set up to acquire the makers of rocket league. That is sciatic six now sciatic independent, I assume. Game was on PS four. My remember being everything big hit on PS four came part of early on on its APS. Plus, right. Yeah. I think at launch rocket league dead free. And then it was on steam pretty big community there. They're going to pick up a rocket league. And in the short term sang saying, nothing's changing this. This'll be a good thing to sound. And they say quote in the long term, we expect to bring rocket leaked to the EPA game store into leverage our new relationship to grow the game in ways, we couldn't do on her own before we believe that bringing rocket league to new audiences more support is a win for everybody. And there has been talk about science or epic at that point. I guess taking the game off of steam for sale, but nothing has been confirmed as far as I know late own twenty nineteen weren't they saying that like if you purchased it you'll be able to still play it and everything, but like it won't be purchaseable after late this year. I had read that. But I wasn't able to confirm, but I'm not sure that like anyone epic or Siamak said definitively. This is what's happening. The rocket league will come to the epoch store in late twenty nineteen and the sale is supposed to close by the end of may or early June.
