Senior Citizens In A Fighting Ring!

"Lyles in their dementia caregiving journey welcome to let's talk dementia here's your host bestselling author. Carol Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Hells let's talk dementia a podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and are normal occurrences that can happen caregiving things do happen you can count on it if you've not had a fall with your loved one in your own home stick around elder abuse at an assisted living facility in that area they the report said the women were allowing elderly residents to fight each other our world Do Not know see I'm the kind of person that I don't understand boxing among humans you know the home Mohammed Ali Sta don't get it medium to the doctor to the -mergency room or at least do some first aid care there in your home realize these kinds of things that I'm talking about ages I dunno folks it was my mind so how do we as families respond to situations hopefully not like this but to similar assaulted a resident by shoving them now did they day shove this resident in order to incite this fighting what was going on. I don't know but get this no injuries were reported we're now let me help you understand something you get a group of senior citizens well you know. I swear I'm speechless what do you say about this how do you make sense out of such fighting ring with elders and it just blows my mind well this is the story in Winston Salem North Carolina police arrested three women following reports of craziness you don't it's it's just craziness investigator said the employees actually encourage the fighting and one APL- employees when you think about it oh my goodness police said all three individuals charged were working in the patient care roles for the community at the time of the incident the other so that we can enjoy watching beat each other up the good thing is they were arrested in there is an upcoming court night which I hope they lock them up for it's going to happen so you know it's going to happen in an assisted living or memory care or wherever because our loved ones become less mobile and fall today we're GonNa talk about elder abuse and about a fighting ring of senior citizens can you believe I even said those words how does this happen and ever there's just no way this is good you know I am not a children person Jesus loves the Little Children Carol loves don't people so when I read about this sometimes of injury or fall or concerns might have so I if you know something you discover something's gone on with your loved one the first thing is care now I don't understand it dogfights where people watching Oh the blue I don't get it you start talking about elder abuse and now isn't that just precious that is just a rich you know we're GonNa push patient care folks in and then those votes are going encourage you to find me the other and let them fight I guarantee you somebody's GonNa get hurt it's GonNa happen I mean unless we're patting them up and that's even more disgusting care for your person to bring them through that injury as well as possible so bill big expedient getting that care but then right on the hill walls are just is just part of the story and in cuts and scrapes and things like this that result from it but the main thing is getting the injury they may not remember the event that caused the injury that may think they don't need to go and that can be a problem sometimes we just have to override that you're GonNa be aware that your wealth or your loved one might not want to go they might not want to go to the doctor they may not understand they haven't so but realizing that they may not remember what happened there story might be convoluted which might mean is not entirely true so now when you get to a community and you discover moms all banged up that's your first problem because whenever Mont had the injury you have to do a little investigation to find out I want you to be careful making accusations especially if you're talking well really in any city they did something wrong it could be mom just fail right but you also always want to approach the executive director of the community they need to know what happened and see what they know what happened and decide where you need to go from there maybe it just happened and you just observe if they were unconscious for sure they're going to the hospital and if you're seeing a change in their cognitive ability that's that's a little warning sign there. I think they should have contacted you immediately they should've said just calling to tell you that your mom fell out of bed or that your mom they'll walk into the dining room she's bumped her head small portion of it so don't let that one bad apple ruined the whole bunch because in my lifetime and I've worked with a lot of community alling thank you for that because I can guarantee you she she or he as these give director doesn't get a whole lot of people calling saying but we don't spend an equal amount of time lifting up people so make sure you do that but if things get really bad and you're not getting the satisfaction you feel like you should get from the this morning and you came back tonight and there's a big here and you're scrapes on elbow or whatever and yes you hired a caregiver yes you're paying assisted living but it doesn't mean that there was an issue with her medication and it repeated itself feud homes until my head about exploded and I contacted I had pitchers of your loved ones injuries you do you want to document who you talked with what time you talked with them what they said you went to the hospital they did this added that they've had a blow to the head or there's an open wound and we've got to be proactive but absorbed their body bruises cuts scrapes burns if we could clone these human beings what a different world it would be right so there are those situations so be aware of that also if you're taking walked in literally it was happening as you opening the door back could be the case so be aware that there are extenuating service circumstances you WanNa take do things because we as humans don't do that have you noticed we spend a lot of time complaining using the B word you know that's really what we do the email for a bunch of the big waves in the company that under assisted living they all got an email from me every last one of them from then forward in all of their sister living so it was very glad I did it that's not why I did it I did it to protect my momma in because an error had been made they did that and make notes of what went on the on the reverse side of that the flip side of that coin of crazy caregivers the Monday morning on calling in I reporting you will that worked not only did it work it changed how they dispense medication on your second problem is they didn't notify you and that's a big problem so that's when you sit down with the executive director and said I should've had a call from you I should've had floors sticky wise and not been mopped then you need to also take time to say I just want to tell you about your chef oh my gosh the food that man codes breath dot com she is amazing looking at what you've written in making sure it represents you will find her at www dot editor Beth dot com I five to to nine one nine on the Internet at www dot in the F. dot org they speak veterans so you don't have to and you tell them that woman could is amazing I wanna tell you about the mid tech that was on duty last night answered all my questions so kind so efficient and my mom's room is just sparked Harrelson you when you call to inquire about benefits for the veteran spouse of the bed or both editor bed you can find Ms Beth crosby at editor our brings hope hope bring smiles and we all need more smiles thanks for joining us today and we'll be right here when you come back to let's talk dimension today for Carol Howls Let's talk dementia to learn more about dementia we recommend Carols bestselling book also titled Let's Talk Dementia It's available on Amazon and into- bye bye let's talk dementia would like to thank our sponsors National Association of Veterans and families you can reach them at eight hundred three a are there for the hunt the repair and maintenance of your Honda Hyundai Toyota Kia tell them carol CINCI thanks for joining us we are all the wonderful caregivers so the crazy caregivers are this manning but the wonderful caregivers there this many into the crazy ones are just call from the nurse. I should've had both of those and I didn't know anything's going on Might become fun to do community but you WANNA approach the executive director Saturday evening before I went to bed that night I had phone calls from every last one of them 'cause my email said either you contact me and you help me with this situation and HD imports located on Flint Street extension in Rock Hill South Carolina that's your county eighty three nine eight five zero nine eight five we're back and kindle versions be sure like let's talk dementia on facebook and leave us a kind word of review on itunes remember knowledge brings power the time to complain to an executive director about anything whether it's MOM's hurt I didn't know about it something large like that or for the fourth day in the Romans unity and you should get satisfaction then you need to call the head or the area agency on aging in some places is called county council on Aging or maybe even your local news he wants to send her to the -mergency room you should already know that so if you get there and you didn't already know that see that's your first problem when you first problems before you call the news you call the director goat I give you a chance to help me and you haven't and I'm calling channel twelve or nine whatever in just wanted you know that grievous so be aware be proactive be nice but stand up for what's right I've been in some that just make me WanNa scream like the little boy in home alone and then I've been in some that I thought Oh my word choice I'm not even qualified just in any situation be careful making accusations because you don't know what happened you realize that mom did not have a big bump on her head when you left her that's GonNa make some heads roll I can tell you that Oh gosh out ten years go longtime ago in the community my mom's Libya welcome to let's talk dementia. What's fallen from the plane? It turns out with a bunch of jet fuel like sixty people had to be treated for getting hit a lot of them children because most of it landed on or around an elementary school on a playground because the pilot had to jettison the fuel to lighten the load or balance it out to to make it safer land it was an emergency dumping of and that's why they're called jets because of Jettison jettisoning the fuel a lot of people don't know that there were actually originally called Jettison planes and then they just shortened it to jet planes either jettisoned is or dumped it right. Ground Flax Seed and Why You Need It

"Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia a podcast designed to help care givers find knowledge power hope and smiles in their dementia caregiving journey welcome to let's talk dementia here. Is Your host bestselling author Carol Welcome to let's talk dementia. I am Carol. How will your host glad you chosen to join me today? Let's talk to mention sponsored by National Association Veterans Families and you can reach them at eight hundred three five to two nine. One nine in their website is W._W._w.. Dot in a V._S. Dot O._R._G.. And why would you call them. You will call them to find out about benefits for the veteran and the spouse of the veteran. Tell them Carol since you well. I wanted to tell you about out our new book the called reminisce and worship you can find it on our website. Let's Stop Dementia Dot O._R._G.. And on Amazon and I hope you will check it out there. It is a wonderful thirty day bright bright beautiful color pictures pitchers that your individual with dementia can work sue on their owner. You might work with them will today. I wanted to talk with you about an idea to increase how healthy you are in making a little change in your diet that it really is a very little change but is good for you. So we know that Diet plays a big part in the health of our body. Well Yeah it pretty much is very very important. What we eat excuse me <hes> what what we eat affects how our body works in what we can and cannot do I am convinced and I've said for years that what is wrong with America in our bodies <hes> and not just America but what is wrong with people in general is what we put in our body or what we don't put in our body what we do to our body or what we don't do for our bodies and I think that is true for so very many diseases now realizing there are some things that happened in our week got no control over whatsoever not talking about that but what we know is anything that's good for? The heart is good for the brain. Anything that's bad for the heart is bad for the brain. We know that inflammation in your body is a direct. Direct correlation to Alzheimer's <hes>. You don't want that so we've got to do things to get inflammation under control. Get blood pressure under control whether it's to hire to love one thing that's become very real in my world is <hes> I am on a medication to prevent migraines. One of the things that does is it lowers my blood pressure. I don't have high blood pressure so I have to be very aware of how I am feeling in the mornings for the last couple of weeks. I thought I just don't feel really good. I feel a little bit lightheaded. May Be Peripheral Vision on a few occasions got a little dark and I thought HM Carol pay attention. You preach all the time to pay attention to your body and I thought this is not good. I took my blood pressure every morning for several mornings. When I felt this and sure enough my blood pressure was loved now it was not in the danger low but it was on the very low end of normal and I saw you know maybe I need to cut back a little bit on my one medication now? Be careful about changing on dosages without talking to your doctor but I already had done that and I knew that I could change that dosage. I cut my morning pill in half my blood pressure came came up which it needed to be in the more average normal rather than low normal and I have felt better again. Don't make those changes caused Carol said to do not do that. Call your doctor but it's something then you might Wanna discuss. Can I just do this. Triumph might also call your pharmacists and find out I tell you the pharmacy is such an underused wealth of knowledge for US calling the might be a problem you call mine you just hold hold older twelve today's twelve nights but driving over there and just asking questions a good idea but what I wanted to tell you about today is ground flaxseed or flaxseed meal. There's a company called Red Red meal Bob's red meal. You see it Walmart carries Bob's raid can find it everywhere and they carry a whole line of very healthy <hes> ingredients that are organic and don't have all kinds of junk. That's bad for you in one of them is golden flaxseed meal what you're GonNa do with Golden Onen flaxseed meal <hes> well. That's a good question. <hes> in what I have begun to learn is the benefits of flaxseed meal when it's added to your Diet <hes> one important thing to know is I'm talking about flaxseed. Seed meal or ground flaxseed here. I'm not talking about the whole flaxseed. flaxseed is flat and if you consume it you can put it in your cereal or whatever your banking your smoothie. It's GonNa come in and it's going to leave in the exact same form in which it came in so in other words you are passing that that flaxseed in it has not changed your body. One bid is just decreased the amount of money in your wallet. What we do is get the benefit from that flaxseed in order to do it has to be crushed so what's in that flaxseed now comes out in your body and the easiest way to do that is ground flaxseed meal or liquid flaxseed and you can buy liquid Philip flaxseed exceed <hes> probably more so at your local <hes> vitamin store? If you're in Rock Hill South Carolina recommend vitamin depot on you can order from them online. You keep it in the refrigerator. That is an excellent way to increase your health so you can add it to your breakfast cereal or your casseroles or your muffins or don't make cookies very often but if you do add it to cookies whatever it is you can add a little bit of that flaxseed ground flax seed. Maybe a tablespoon June or to end it. There's no identifying marker in your food doesn't change how it feels on your tying. It doesn't change how it tastes. <hes> you can even take one tablespoon of ground flaxseed mill in mix it with three tablespoons of very hot water allow it to rest in a few minutes it becomes very gelatinous and you can use that as an ex substitute that is a really neat way to keep down fat and keep down calories in whatever your cooking now. I'm a big proponent of eggs. I think it's one of nature's perfect foods but you want to make sure you're not living off of eggs to we don't want overdue on anything and then lastly ground flax seed meals provide meal <unk> we do that again. Ground Flax seed meal just ground flaxseed provides Lignans ally in a N S and if you're like me you're thinking what the heck are Lignans well. That's a good question. Lignans have plant estrogen in anti oxidant qualities flax meal contains seventy five to eighty times more lignans than any other plant food in fact you would have to consume forty cups of Broccoli. Broccoli that'd be a lot of Brockley to receive an equal amount of linen. That's in one ounce of flaxseed think about that and Lignans. Hell is a natural way to control cholesterol in their high hi in dietary fiber well. I'm pretty sure I'm not gonNA eat forty cups of Broccoli and if I did I'd have to have a whole lot cheese in butter on it eventually to get it down which is truly going to destroy the whole benefit of having eaten the Broccoli to begin with so maybe that one ounce of flaxseed Lexi. That's pretty good way to get that in my diet each day and then also flaxseed meal or the liquid flaxseed is a natural moisturizer for the skin. If you are continually having super dry skin in your lotion and you're using everything you can put on your skin than I have been told your dry skin is not a an external problem. It's dry from the inside out and so that flexi meal or the liquid flaxseed especially especially will help lubricate. You're scanning your gun. Start noticing a difference in the health of your skin. My mom drank <hes> about I don't know a tablespoon. Maybe two tablespoons of flaxseed oil every day for a couple of years and we noticed a huge improvement in the quality of her skin so that's just an easy thing to do. You can buy Walmart. Check it out and then when you use it and you start noticing your skin's better. You can thank me for that. I don't mind well. I WanNa thank our sponsor National Association of Veterans in families. You can reach them at eight hundred three five to two nine one nine and their website is w._w._w.. Dot in a v-f Dot O._R._G.. R._G.. Tell Them Carol sent you check us out at. "Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Hells let's talk dementia a podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and miles in their dementia caregiving journey welcome to let's talk dementia here's your host bestselling author. Carol Sunday at now my mother lived off of Food Lion Orange Soda for the last twenty four days of her life I hate sodas there's just nothing about sodas sweetly stadia told you guys about this sweetener many times just don't ever in your life even touch artificial sweeteners muchly systems do their thing and as the brain becomes more damage those bodily systems start having issues they don't receive signals that they should so the brain does bathing eating amputating dressing toilet eating they'll tolerating pooping right so we think about pooping pretty much when we has consumed them we know that artificial sweeteners in folks who are diabetic makes their sugar levels worse it doesn't help Finna understand I'm just going to stop right there not go further but it's good thing when it works right right well we know that the brain controls everything don't in if you've ever spent much of your time dealing with constipation as an adult then you understand how important it is to be able to use the bathroom regularly water in that they wouldn't drink the water will I am all for drinking water I consume about a gallon of water a day three quarters of that gallon is water and the other remakes you you the brain makes your loved one your loved one they are unique being there person but the brain also makes all the bodily quarter of it which would be a court is sparkling water that has no artificial sweetener in it at all it's just flavored sparkling water to which I add liquid in lots of good smells there so it is a problem we end we know that folks we demand you'll become constipated quicker than the average senior citizen but sweet leaf Stevia comes in powder and liquid is not artificial so that's what I add to it so I tell my folks what is it your loved one likes to drink will offer them because they are not drinking enough again the Brian's not sending the signal you're thirsty you need to drink something and then sometimes it's caregivers way made we don't offer as much liquid edge which should was at a meeting last week I believe they were talking about in this particular memory care making sure their residents got enough bray a bunch of some dough tear oil don't spray that nasty stuff that you buy anywhere and everywhere that comes in a bottle like this or pump they're better off with sugar than with artificial sweeteners there so bad for your brain they're bad for your gut microbiome stay away from them they don't worry about it in new poop on yourself so it's a real problem so don't be upset with your loved one when it happens you might WanNa get a mask on Carr's skull smell pretty bad that fully chemicals the chemicals are bad for your body in more ways than you wanna know about get some dough tear oil sprinkl it around it works very well don't but boy I don't know that's not good well it is one of the activities of daily living that we talk about their five activities of daily living return hand this way can't tell the body you need to PP and so therefore we appeal themselves because they didn't know they needed to go and then the brain will tell the body you don't need to prove it's okay good for you but it was what we could get mom to drink and she would drink it so you have to weigh that what I recommend is if your loved one is hung up on coke or Pepsi or unless you haven't been to the potty in a month or something or your loved one hasn't but you need to be more aware of what's going on with your body and when you're with your loved ones drink whatever maybe see if you can water it Dan will they take it half water half soda whatever you need to do to get that into their body but my process I think we used to keep a little note pad moms potty when she had earlier stages of Alzheimer's lived in assisted living in its moms poop pad simply didn't say poop the taste at all squash Zucchini does not change the taste. You need to watch and or listen. That episode called along spoons but we are called to take care of each other the Ten Commandments. Tell us on our father and mother. That's taking care We are taught to care for the widows. That's from I Timothy. And we vowed a loved one other till death do us part in regards to our spouses. That's what we're supposed to but in order to have a successful caregiving journey. We really do have to pull on the resources that are available right now. Your resources are limited in a big way. That's going to change folks we're GonNa come to the other side of the US and life will go back to normal. I'm being told no it won't life will never be normal again. You Look Fat!

"Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and SMILES IN THEIR DEMENTIA. Caregiving generally welcome to. Let's talk dementia. Here's your host bestselling author Carol. Welcome to let's talk to meantime Carol how your host and today we're GonNa talk about being fat. Yes we are and we're going to talk about a few Bible verses in quotes that have come to my mind lately that reflect directly applying the situations in my life and I thought you know it might help you in your life to join just maligning here and having a bit of a problem. We'll have had someone tell you you're fat. You look like you're pregnant. When is the baby due? Or you know your hair just looks awful or where did you get that pair of pants? Were they bad on you? Something just so hurtful and so inappropriate. I think we've all had that happen. And if you haven't will then yeah for you but if you're caregiving hold onto those pants that you've got on letter to Die. 'cause he's probably going to happen are folks with dementia are none for saying things that are inappropriate? And it's not necessarily that they're out to hurt you. They just say what comes to their mind. If they think you look like you put on a few pounds in this just gonNA come out and it may not land on. You may not feel so good when they say it but the question is how. Are you going to respond to those statements that are inappropriate or hurtful or offensive in some way other? Well you can be defensive. You can go well. I'm not fat but outlook as fast as you or my herlitz better than your hair or do you think these pants look bad. You should look in the mirror. What you've got on. You could say that anybody and there's really nobody on the planet you can say that too that the end result is going to be good is it and certainly not with your folks with dementia. Now if they don't have the demand don't have dementia and they say that to you then you really do have to wonder what's going on in their world that they think it's okay. Say these inappropriate things and you know what we don't know what's going on in our in other people's world we do good just to keep up with our own world. Forget keeping everybody else's straight so maybe just maybe we should ignore it from them. Maybe maybe we shouldn't. I'm not sure I don't want to hear those words to have to discern what my response would be to my person who does not have dementia but to my person who has dementia. You Might WanNa go. You know what you might be right. I should probably eat more sale reinstated. Donuts where do you think in see what their responses it would probably just cut the edge off or or the tension in the room might be less than just by agreeing? Yep I'll look wolf. Fatima should eat celery instead of donuts. And see what they say. And then you might say something like. What do you like on your salary? If you were to eat salary. What would you put on it? See what their response is. And if they don't have a good response say. Do you like peanut. Butter on celery. Have you ever tried putting peanut butter with raisins on your salary? Do you know what they call that. That's called ants on a log if you have peanut butter on a piece of salary. New Put Raisins isn't that NEAT. See Now we've taken the conversation from something that was offensive. Something that made you feel not so good or maybe even a little angry to the universal language in what told you is the universal language it is not it is food. We all relate to it and we used to version therapy to do that. We took him from one point. All the way to something different Wa- stealing knowledge in what they said. It's hard to do sometimes but it is something that I tell you over and over again for various reasons in here giving their things you need to practice in diversion. Therapy is one of them on the tape the last few days. I've had some emotions to deal with that. I have not been enjoying As you know my mom passed may thirty first and I think about her day my life and there are days that I do it. Wale and there are days when it just gets a hold of me more than what I wanted to my friend. Linda told me lead those feelings com. Let them wash over you in. Let them leave. And I've done well at that but the last few days have not done so well letting him leave. I kinda came to the realization. I'm no one's daughter That's a weird feeling. Obviously my whole life. I've been somebody's daughter and I am not anyone's daughter right now. I am not my Mama's caregiver and I love being honest caregiver There was never a thing that I did that. Mama did not affirm that I did not hear from her. Oh cookie you've got this you can. Do it have a good friend that I've recently met Michelle and showbiz eighty two years old. She's only one year older than my Momma and She has a way of a filling in sometimes on the emotions that I might would have gotten from Mama and today. She told me kid. Whatever it is you WanNa do you just do you? Just make it work saying. I just heard mom in that. Made me feel good but I wanted to read to you a quote from the Bible that I'm reading. I'm trying to think of the that. This gentleman took the Bible. Broke it up into a year and is price for America Bible. That's it and so you have old testament new tests Moore Song proverbs but there is a little prayer at the beginning of each day. I'll read you what it was for yesterday. I believe these are my Abysmal glasses for you guys. That are not seeing this but hearing hit the color on. These glasses is awful but anyway. Here's the prayer and it just really struck me now thank you it relates to caregiving to Lord. You told your first followers to have courage because you were with them. Help us to soak in that message tune to fill it in our buried bones. Remind us you've got this. You're in control. It'll be okay. I'm in Oman. Does that not speak to caregiving? Yes I think it does. And so a while back. I was given a package of today's prayer cards. Can you see that with the light on it? And they're just little four by six cards assists. Today's prayer on one side on the other side as today's prayer this was yesterday's God is within her. She will not fall. This was today. Faith can move mountains kind of where I am in this journey. Feeling that I need bolstered up and I know you do too in your caregiving journey. Have days where you think you got it going on in the days when you need bolstered up you can do this. God's got you. Are You Stressed Out?

"Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles in their dementia caregiving journey. Welcome to let's talk dementia. Here's your host bestselling author Carol. Well Hello Everyone I'm Carol. Let's talk dementia. Well I'm glad you're here today. We are still quarantined. Are Not to some degree of the other. We all are because of the virus. Well we're GonNa talk about that today. We're GONNA talk about the the effect that living stressful has on you. Now as a caregiver has a caregiver. If there's one thing I am sure of it is you are dealing with stress. Now that we have this virus is part of our world. Our stress levels just naturally seem to be higher because of the fear of the unknown that we've got going on living in a constant state of stress as you know is not good for you can explain to you what goes on in the brain with stress and why it is particularly important for you to know this as a caregiver so. I'm reading from a website called six seconds as I xe seconds dot. Org It's the number six and it's quite a good website in. This is what they wrote. So I'm reading from their website says a badge taking a leisurely walk in the park. When you suddenly see a snake on the path to fate in front of you in one quick second your body mobilizes your eyes register the side of the long winding menacing creature to the Migdal in your brain the mendel processes snake and screams to the hypothalamus threat threat. The hypothalamus quickly and competently shoots the message of alarm to your whole nervous system. Which prepares you for either a battle for either a battle or tells you to run Mike Hale. Epinephrine which is Adrenalin. Flood Your Bloodstream. Triggering. You're pounding quick heart rate. Extra blood fills your veins. Your blood pressure sharply increases rapidly. Funneling blood towards your your vital organs in your muscles your breathing quickens in shallow pressing extra oxygen into the Brian for ad alertness. You are now fully prepared. Fight this snake or you gonna run in Opposite Direction. Well does that sound familiar to you. Have you ever had those times in your life when you realize that you are in that fight or flight type of situation? Well we all have. Maybe you did in your drains you you. Oh God you're really stressed out from a bad dream that you've had and on your just full of anxiousness and and really jacked up that fight or flight from that bad dream that you've had or maybe something's happened in your life. This caused you to be like that. When we tell you what's going on in your life is causing you to be like that most likely caregiving people who caregiver folks with dementia have a higher level of cortisol in their body than those. Who Don't now when we're in that fight or flight when we're running from that snake or running from a bear or what ever ran from a bear Cortisol is in abundance in our body and we want it because if we're running from a bear we won't extraordinary power to be able to get away from that. They're right or running from the snake. We want to get away from it. I gotTa tell you. I opened the front door two nights ago to take our dog out for her last run of the evening an open door shut it real quick wit snake at the door snake at the door. Work Man in my freaked out by snakes. And I can guarantee you. At that moment. There was a lot of cortisol inmate. That's a good thing. You WanNa have cortisol when it is appropriate in your life to have it but you have a very high level of cortisol most likely because you are in a constant state of stress with dementia caregiving. Now this is more true if your loved one is in the later stages of their disease than in the earlier stages when they're more competent on their more able to do things on their own or with a little help but as we get into those last stages of the disease we see people who need constant care and they're not cooperative in their very confused in their sad in. They're sick and there's just so much going on in it makes it so hard for the caregiver a bigot. Been there done. That is hard. And because of that your cortisol levels in your body start to get higher and higher. 'cause you're staying jacked up. You're staying in that fight or flight. You're going to get this done. You're going to be successful in your tints and you got it off everything in your body's on Set on ready to go in. You don't let that stress go down and let breathing come back to normal living like that increases. Your chances of so many diseases is you. Don't I don't even WanNa know all the diseases that you're more prone to because of living in a high state of Cortisol but I'll tell you. One of them is Alzheimer's Alzheimer's caregivers have a higher risk of Alzheimer's than those who are not Alzheimer's caregivers and one of the reasons is because of this constant state of fighter flight. We're the brain so turned on so Ready to act quickly in those cortisol levels just get higher higher in. We don't allow them to come back down. Your Cortisol levels are higher in the morning than the rest of the day. And that's okay and then we want them to go down so that at night when we lay down to sleep we can actually sleep and have good restful sleep. So Cortisol levels do fluctuate throughout the day. Study was done with folks who just did a little bit of breathing every day three times a day. Six months later they check those votes in their cortisol levels had come down to normal in all they did was practice some healthy breathing now. What that healthy breathing look like? I've taught you about various types of breathing where you breathe in for three seconds you out for six seconds or it's called on square breathing called lots of things. Where maybe you breathe in for three seconds you hold it for two you out for six seconds you hold it for to any various numbers but whatever you number you breathe out. Whether it's two four six you breathe immanent whatever number you breathe in you break out twice along. That's the correct way. So if I'm breathing in one two three four I'm GONNA break out one. Two three four five six seven eight sometimes. We're going to hold it at the top of that breathing in in at the bottom of that breathing out for a number of seconds. The study that was done was just depress just literally sitting in taking deep breaths breathing in and breathing allowing yourself to do this. I'm trying to remember. I heard of a show on it. I've tried to bind. Silly showed which will get the exact numbers to tell you not cannot find it anywhere but it was only like three or four minutes three times a day where you just sit down and allow yourself to breed breathing in breathing out since your phone. You've got a timer on your phone. Said it for three minutes and allow yourself that time just took breath. Do It three times a day. The effect on your body on your brain on your whole being on your wellbeing on the how you process how you look at things. Your mood is improved just by taking three minutes to breathe. Isn't that incredible? I think it's pretty neat One of the things that you can do to improve even more so on the benefits of that breathing is to cy at the end of the breath. So you breathe it in and you breathe it out haw that verbal ization of letting it out seems to be very helpful for some of us. It's just very quiet. Little GENTLE FEMININE. Little in for some of its breathing in hollow. Really letting it out very good for you. You can do this. It will cost you nothing to do but three minutes three times a day. It's GonNa make you a better caregiver. Process ICAL make you live a healthier life make you healthier. And that's what I want. I want you to be healthy and smiling because I need you to come back tomorrow. For another episode of Let's Talk Dementia see then by let's talk. "Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles in their dementia caregiving journey. Welcome to let's talk dementia. Here is your host bestselling author Carol. Caregivers this is Carol. Let's talk dementia. Well today I met the sewing machine. I got to thinking about dementia in something. That's been a an important part of my world because my mama made everything us. Three girls war all our clothes. I mean all our clothes. She made she even made my dad's leisure suits. Do you guys remember leisure suits from the nineteen seventies where she made him with that double stitching on the outside? She made our joy reason covered our furniture. And well. I got a little bit of that talent but boy nothing like what she could do. But today I am covering Or recovering some pillaged from my law. That just got. They didn't look so that in it made me think about all the times I would sit and watch moms sub and she would teach me how to so so a little bit going beard. You're listening to this year. That noise in the background. That's the sewing machines which are not static on telephone in. Mamma taught me how the so and I'm glad I think about her lot now is I'm working on this but there came a point. My Mama's journey of dementia that sewing frustrated her and so I would be there to help her on the frustration that she would experience and she could keep going in. We would accomplish projects the last project moment I ever made together was we made twenty eight poodle. Skirts for one of the choirs that I worked with I conducted choirs for those with dimension. We were doing a sock hop in all those ladies. Well they need a poodle skirts. And Mama helped me and I say helped. Kind of loosely. Because he kinda was more in the room than anything in this kind of point. Mama got to the point. She couldn't read the machine she could not remember the processes for threading sewing machine. She could not remember how to make the bobbin thread. Come up on top on on platform here to begin sewing. Mama couldn't do that anymore. She couldn't remember how to turn a pattern to make it fit on the fabric but if I decided to do a sewing project and acted as if Mama steel could do it and got her Bob to whatever level she could do so much enjoyed it and just hung out together and instead of me going. Mama's moved also at myself. I'll go no mom. I want you to stand over. May and watch me while I do this so I can learn when folks knew how to do what I was doing. Okay I I really didn't have to have mama there. But it sure was more fun having her there and then giving her the sense of having accomplished helping with the project. That was pretty big for Momma then. Every time we looked at the poodle skirts. Aca Go mom of you and I made those together. We did a good job did and we did to a good job. I really did get very sick of sewing on poodles. I'm GonNa tell you that with the Courting you know for the caller that came up to the waistband. Thought we'd never get all those silly skirts done. But it was a fun time with our loved ones with dementia. We know that they start. Losing INTEREST. In hobbies we see that early on in their dementia. Journey is sometimes even before they're ever diagnosed. One of the symptoms is mom's not participating E. N. filling the blind. Maybe it's playing cards with their friends. may be it sewing like with Mama. Maybe it's cooking. I don't know what was her hobby. What was the thing? She likes most ADO in. If you notice a change in that that they're clicking away from it it might be time to stop and go. Why are they pulling away from it in? Is it dementia meaning that they cannot process the thaw to make that activity happened any longer? And that's what happened with Mama but she would get excited about assisting me in different things and you know it was quite amazing every once in a while in that process of making all those listed poodle skirts mama would come up with something that would really help. And I'd be like certainly wasn't expecting that for Momma but theory was and she was able to help it was so meaningful for her and for me too but break your people into that experience if they liked to cook bring them into the kitchen and allow them to do the things they can do. I remember the last time was in the kitchen with me was in her group home which is just a home where six people lived. It was wonderful and so it had a kitchen just a house in a neighborhood of course education and I cooked on. Sundays is just something I've done for years and cooked for everybody else Sunday so I asked the staff. Can I cook on Sunday so I yeah so mama would get in there and she would help me I remember one time we were having Kiwok patties and I buy them already made their quite good from all of you have not had them. I recommend you do. Mama could not handle that whole process. Moma here is the baking pan. Here's the bots. Will you open the boxes up for me? As we were cooking for six people took several boxes and she was able to open the box or the boxes and took a little effort for Momma. She wasn't super quick at it but it got her ball inside. She opened the boxes in the signal. Here the scissors because it was still okay from scissors. Cut The plastic that holds these keen walkers out could cut it away and get the burgers out and she did now Mama. Could you put the Burgers on the baking sheet? And she did some was involved. Now I will tell you mom very much did not mind at all. Having Somebody Cook for her so she wasn't really thrilled about helping to cook so after she got that done. She's like I'll go sit in my chair. You can finish this project like Okay Mama. Whatever makes you happy and she did. She did not help any more. But get your folks involved whatever degree they can help in. Change your definition of help if you want to have something to allow them to empty the dishwasher. Get the knives out ahead of time. So nobody's GonNa get hurt and then don't get freaked out when the plates are where the Cup should be in the cups or where the dish the casserole dishes should be. Just let her go in and straighten it out because what you did was you. Allow them to participate in life to the -bility they were capable of. Doing you celebrate it and you went on with it because I got used for you. You don't do things right every down anyway. So don't expect them to go incorrect. Which you think needs to be corrected when they're not looking while they're taking a nap. Go in and fix whatever you think just has to be fixed. And if it doesn't have to be fixed just let alone this my thought for today. Now I got three pillars to make in their coming out. What pretty I will show you the Fabric here may get this that you can take a look. I've got one finished but have already could it on the late night and this is pretty fabric for one side in the NBA. Coordinating Fabric. Come back and I'm just excited about him. I'm here quarantine because this is the project I can do. You guys have a Great Day. Safe DAY BE HEALTHY. See on the next episode of. Preparing The Family For Thanksgiving

"Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles lyles in their dementia caregiving journey welcome to let's talk dementia. Here's your host bestselling author Carol. Hello and welcome back to. Let's talk the Ninja. I am here how we rose internationally. Certified Dementia Practitioner and author of Amazon bestselling booklets dementia and whole bunch of other books. You can check them out on our website. Www Dot let's talk dementia Dot Org. Well today. I wanted talk with you about Thanksgiving. We are less than two weeks or two weeks away. Whatever it is from Thanksgiving in? It's a great time. I am a lot of family gatherings lot of memories from the past. A lot of expectations. a lot of food and after the event we will realize that event did not go quite like we had in our mind it was not a Norman Rockwell. Seen it never has been at my house or even growing going up the Food might not have settled is good and our loved one with dementia well. They didn't respond quite like we thought they would. So let's Kinda on a plant that in advance what you say. Well this will be my first Thanksgiving without Momma. She went to heaven on May thirty first so that will be different for me. But that's okay because she's not missing me as she. She is celebrating in heaven. And I'm going to be celebrating here. That she is there. But it will be different and it will be different for you In your loved one because if you're caregiving for some dementia. They are most likely different than they were. Last year Their abilities have changed. Disabilities have increased. Their need for you to be more attentive is growing and we need to think about how that might mine affect your holiday. The first thing you need to think about is who is coming. Who is coming to your house or are you taking your loved one to their house okay? Let's talk about that last point for I are you taking your loved one to their house. all right now. That's going to depend on where your loved. One is in their journey. If there earlier mid-stage great you know piling the car go be prepared maybe to stop more often allow risk time and be prepared to answer the same question in here the same story story repeatedly. But that's okay because the day's GonNa come. You're not able to hear that so this okay but if you're looking at maybe even mid stage too late stage H.. Depending on where in the journey they are in the type of dementia. They have what their cognitive levels are are. Not How easy it is is for them to socialize and how easy it is for them to be comfortable somebody else's house or another location. Then you might need to rethink that plant so if you're having folks to your house There are things we need to do there to prepare for our loved ones for that visit. So okay we're GONNA Hop in the car. And we're GONNA drive two hours with someone with advanced dementia probably would not do that. I just don't think I I would put my loved one or myself through that two hours in the car of them. Not Recognizing anything because why will the scenery's changing quite rapidly piddly And they're totally unclear where they're going in. There probably not very happy about it. So that's your first problem. Then you get there and you're going into someone someone else's home supposedly maybe a restaurant but probably someone's home and again scenery. They're not familiar with. They don't recognize the house. They don't I know where the bathroom is. They're confused about why they're there. You might tell them repeatedly. We've come to have Thanksgiving with your oldest daughter and they're not gonNA remember that 'cause remember you to remember. They can't remember that part of their brain hippocampus which allows him to access. This current memories is very damaged. They cannot remember so they're in a state of confusion. I said before if you kind of wonder or experience or think about what dementia is lie as you sit and listen to this show or watch this show I want you to pretend that someone got you on a plane and Blindfolded you got you on a plane took you to a country that you've never been to before for me that would be most countries. 'cause I just don't travel but suppose I was dropped opt Japan where I speak Japanese. I have no one in the entire country that I know. I do not know how to get from where I am to anywhere I might. I WanNa be and the blindfold comes off and they say care all you need to go to these six places. I couldn't do it. I couldn't do it. I couldn't communicate with anybody. I couldn't find my way around. It would be very very scary. Well that's Sorta what dementia feels like for your loved one so you're taking them from their place of comfort the house they are in every day or this is the memory care or wherever to some other place in. It's very uncomfortable. So you got to think about that. But if if they're able to go and it's right that that travelling in that inner change between one one location other is still something they can handle in their journey. Then let's let's go but let's prepare our folks to know where mom is says in her dementia journey. It may have been a year since they saw her. Maybe it was last is Thanksgiving or last Christmas and they are expecting her to be like she was then and she may not be in. You need to ahead of time. You have in phone calls or emails or Heaven Forbid we should ride a ladder And get that information out. This is where mom is now. She probably won't recognize denies you She may not eat. Well she may need to take a nap just to Four Warrant Your folks that this is going on so so you get the to the new location. Please be aware that your loved one Might be a little overwhelmed and just the whole change of atmosphere is going to be overwhelming to them now. This is true even if folks are coming to the home that they're used to being in having all all these people in a little bit overwhelming. And you know this you love for your family to come for Thanksgiving but what do you love next when they leave uh-huh because you're not used Avin fifty nine people in your house. All of them want to eat at the same time is a little overwhelming for units definitely overwhelming for votes with dementia. So no matter where we are if we're at their home or where they live and we're taking their someone taking them somewhere. We WanNa make sure that there is a quiet spot for them so that after an hour hour and a half where you can judge it you pay attention to that person. Listen you realize. They're a little bit overwhelmed. I think I'm going to take him. Maybe let them take nap. And don't take them into the bedroom that they've never been to before and helping to lie down down and turn off the light leave. There might be frightened because they don't know where they are. What's going on again? Remember your Japan and you don't know anything you've never been to Japan before you might just want to sit there with them and If they WANNA talk talk or maybe they just want you to put on some soothing music and maybe sing quietly in the background or maybe they just want you to sit by the bed or lie on the bed with them and hold their hand so they feel comfortable and they can relax and then maybe once they doze off if you want to slide out and go have some conversation. That'll be fine but be aware when they wake up. They're not GonNa know where they are. So you've got to constantly be checking on them in making sure that they are okay with what's going on but allow that quiet space. Make sure that your family knows that you are going to to fix MOMS played in a way that will be acceptable for her brain. You know they may come in and load up one of everything that's been fixed in their pike. Looks it's a little bit like Mount Everest in you're gonNA fix moms play with maybe two or three bites of three or four things in. That's all or maybe just three everything's or maybe just one thing it depends on where your loved one is in their journey that you want to keep things simple but if there's a plate with a whole a bunch of things on it and they look at it is just overwhelming so there's just Turkey and it's cut up in little pieces. They can eat with their fingers. That's a thumbs up when they've finished the Turkey may be then we want to add green beans But you can judge how many items to put on the plight with your log on but you never wanna load their play it. It is overwhelming to the brain and the brain looks at. It doesn't know which direction to go so you know what we do. We pull back and we don't eat and you won't people to enjoy join meals. I mean this is something we do we eat together. It is part of every society. We always eat together when we can and especially at Thanksgiving or holidays. Today's or birthdays. Whatever so let your folks? No I'M GONNA fix MOMS Pie. I know what she likes. And I'm going to put on her plate. The amounts that will appeal appealed to her so that potentially she will eat. I just want you to know this in advance and then another thing you might want to do is to help those who are coming to visit knowhow to respond and interact with mom. Should they call her by her name. How do they go and get conversation going? And that's what we're GonNa talk about tomorrow. 'cause I can tell you for quite a while I didn't call my Mama Mama a powder veer gene and there was a very good reason for that and we're talk about that tomorrow excuse me and How to physically interact and ask our loved ones in guest interact with our votes with dementia? That will make Thanksgiving and Christmas. Or whatever were your holiday might be a more joyful and wonderful occasion and I look forward to that. So I'll see you tomorrow and we're GONNA talk Thanksgiving little bit early because I want. Oh you to be prepared in just in case you think you need to bring Turkey to my house now. I don't eat Turkey. Tofu Turkey now. That would be good to my. You should think about that for me. You guys have a great day bye bye. Let's talk. Why Do You Have On Three Coats?

"Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles in their dementia caregiving journey. Welcome to let's talk dementia. Here's your host bestselling author Carol. Hi Carol how is let's Talk Dementia? I'm glad you're here today. Well today we're going to talk about a whole bunch close in other words. We're not going to be nudist right while you're with advanced dementia. Very well might decide to be a nudist one day. Yeah where are you GonNa do about that? We'll talk a little bit opposed to that. Makes it more interesting doesn't it? The question came across my desk out about a week ago. What do we do about our loved? Ones are Ellos who wear lots of layers of clothes. Well you know. There's a real simple answer for that and the answer is leave them alone. My Dad used to say have to think about what you're going to fight over because if one hundred years from now is not GonNa make any difference that maybe we don't need to fight over to argue ever spend too much time being concerned about it and our loved ones will wearing Sarah lay layers of clothes in my mind falls under that category Now I am all over making sure our loved ones. Look good if you spent much time around my momma you know that. I made sure she had her jewelry on. Her hair was done in her nails done in his shirt. Her shirt and pants match. And I hate it when I come to see her if they put the wrong shirt on with wrong pair of pants and it looked bad because one moment to look good however there is the comfort factor to take into account also which was a big moment for Carol. The first time I realize Momma did have a bra on. Oh my goodness I'm like why did you not put Moms Brown? My mom used to sleep in a Bra. She would not be uncomfortable. She would not be comfortable without her bra in. They said to me Miss Vera did not want her bra today. She said don't put it on and that happened more and more to got to the point. Mama could not stand wearing. Her Bra was very bothersome for her. So guess what we did. We quit wearing a bra but our folks with dementia well our seniors. Let's just say right now. Our seniors are on average colder than they were when they were sixty or forty definitely teenagers. As we age we do get colder easier in with dementia. That is true. The fat pads under your skin protect your nerves and they have an effect on how you perceive cold and Hot in in physical touch and pressure and pain as we age those fat heads disappear in the nerves or more sensitive so our response to cold is different thin what it might be for others in the room. So the answer to the question. What do you do about someone who wants to wear lots of layers of clothes? Is You respect that maybe help them pick out pretty layers of clothes? It's important to you but you respect that they wanna have on those layers clothes and I can tell you they're gonNa have on soft close. They'RE NOT GONNA won't scratchy stuff. That doesn't feel good. I remember one time walking down the hall of Memory Care Community and The staff was standing. Two staff members was standing with a gentleman and he had on a winter coat. I mean a big willie winter coat and was walking down the hall and they took him into his room. They were standing there at the edge of his room telling him to take that coat off. We're going to hand the closet. This is July. You do not need to be wearing a coat and he kept saying but I won't wear the coach will you don't need to? And they were determined to take it off of him and you know about Las. My mind over them dislike all. Don't look don't say anything Susan Your Business but what I wanted to say is what is it hurting. Four Freddie to wear this coat in the hallway. What is one problem with that in? There's not a problem with that. Who cares if ready to wear a coat in the hall in July zipped up and hood on leave the man alone it is his coat it is his body. Leave him alone. He's not hurting himself. He's not hurting anyone else in. Because it offends your senses. Well that's your problem. Not Freddie's problem. So don't make it Freddie's problem he's got enough to deal with right but they were determined to get that coat off him and put it in the closet and they did and of course ready wasn't happy and then they were irked. What good did that do? It did not do any good but then the question comes up. What do we do about the fact that they're turning our heat? We know up to eighty five degrees. And we're dying in here now then. That is a problem right because we can't have everybody in the house with their lungs out. While your loved ones over there all bundled up so then we go back to let workout layering. If they are not on their own layering. Their clothes help them layer. Their clothes may be in their room. If you could Have what you call it? A new ceramic heaters put it up high so they can't touch it where it might Warm the room a little bit in their area where they sit. Make sure they can't get near it votes because that's why haven't you ceramic heater electric heater. You don't do that so you have to keep it away. But we're there area might be more pleasant more comfortable for them. Keep blankets out key pillars out. Things I can snuggle up in and then you could always buy those boxes of clear boxes that goes over the rope Thermostat yeah you know you see them in businesses or churches are big buildings where they don't want the average Joe Messing with the thermostat and you got have a key to unlock it. Raise it and get in there and change. The thermostat will get one. Install it on your thermostat and make it non accessible for your loved one. But I'm telling you fuel load your loved one up with enough clothing distract them. Give them things to do. Keep them involved in. Live as much as you can. We're going to decrease the number of times go there to mess with the thermostat in if they can't get to the thermostat what they can't change it thinking they is. It is a simple thing but respect the fact that your loved ones are cold so if right now you were just freezing and shivering cold in I in you. You wanted to go put on a jacket and I told you. Don't go put on that jacket. You donate a jacket. Put THAT JACKET. Away Getaway. Go sit down. You know all those kinds of things we might would say it makes me mad at. You wouldn't be really hurt that you and I might make you really unhappy for a while when all you had to say was man you like. Call Liska. Get you jacket as put a jacket on you. You you say how that's better and it is better. Try to respond sensibly on your end in some towns that just is not hard. I mean is it is hard. It's not easy. It's like the last thing that comes to mind is the logical approach. Because we're just a wound up just had it we've had it take off the damn. Cow's don't say that would be nice but that's how you feel isn't it? Just let it be Ya. Just let it be breed. Let them wear fourteen coats if they want to. So it's OK tomorrow. The Sun's GonNa come out. Well we're living in this time where there is this. Fear of Corona virus of the Sun's GonNa come out but we might not have toilet paper. I don't know why I don't know why. Toilet papers distilling homemade. That'd be bad. Wouldn't we laugh a well? We'RE PRAYING FOR EVERYBODY. Who's sick no matter what the illnesses right? Young people I think it is too but they're backing it up with these numbers that saying if you're not a registered voter or saying you don't WanNa vote you're not gonNA find a match. Before we get tonight's how can we help you win to? I want to go through a couple of things fast. So you're aware with. Of. How Great? How can we help you win has become for a couple of weeks ago we had a lady who needed. One computer for her three, all elementary schools they can do their virtual learning. You came through with a computer, each child. A nine year old and eleven year old and a twelve year old each one of them got a computer to help a single mom. And those kids were we would have been struggling without it. Now last week we had a lady who. was in need of books for children because they were small children, they run out of books and didn't have any money to go buy books. The response was overwhelming. She said in the first day. She got twenty two books in the mail. She had seven new package that she hadn't opened yet. Every day she's been getting six, seven, ten fifteen more books. For her children and she said she is overwhelmed and feels so great and it's such a blessing and after her kids read the books as they read, she's going to share the books with other families who are in need who have kids to kind of. Spread it around a little bit help other people who might be a very similar situation as to her and she just wanted to say thank you to you the radio family because the books just keep adding up but she's GonNa Kinda keep paying it forward. So to speak without of the good things that you bestowed upon her by sharing those books with other families who are neat. So but that's a moment her home looks like a hoarder house. POWs. Books backed up all over the place. Yeah. See Jane run see Jane Doe Somebody's books away. So. Here's the situation with today's edition of how can we help you win today. We got a note from a lady that said I live in Rock Hill. South Carolina. I am working, but it takes all my paycheck and what little child support I get to pay my bills. The Dad is not of the at all, but it's court ordered to pay something every month, but we still are barely getting by living paycheck to paycheck. My kids don't really care about new clothes name brand clothes. They don't expect gifts I'm lucky that way we live with the bear necessities but within doing school from home, I hate that they have nowhere to study I've been looking for a desk but haven't found one. We don't have a kitchen table, which is why I'm looking for a desk. Right. Now, they're working from the counter, which is kind of the catch all area of the house. I would like to assist them in getting set with a study space. So, that they can properly. Virtually. Learn There's our need today among them kitchen table. That's crazy. They do everything of the counter which means they work at the counter. Then you clear that off to eat at the counter and I'm with assume then as. Someone who has stuff piled up on his desk mail goes on the counter and everything and they just. They everything's transitional it's always transitioning from. Virtual study space to space to eat to probably space to cook to space to hold the mail in space to do this and get your clothes out all that stuff because they don't have a kitchen table so. The need today is for some type of. Desk for this lady who lives in Rock Hill South Carolina for her kids to use. To study, she's a mother of four. And she put it not at all prepared for school at home. Because they just don't have some of the basic necessities and there's not enough counter space for all four of them to learn at one time and dad has bailed out I. Guess He's Court ordered to pay a little bit. So he he pays very little every month and they're just barely getting by she can't afford to go buy something. So do they need? A desk. Or? A table more you know what I mean like dining room table then. Probably more like. More like a table setup. Or small individual desks you know what I mean Like they don't have room obviously for four desks, desks desks. Even. Like like four that you would get an eye which still at a lot of space when you put four of them in there, you're ripe TJ probably more of a table setting. Like a kitchen to almost like A. Kitchen Taylor right? Yeah. But then we don't know whether she's got room for that either. Yeah and a space may not be big enough for that because of her work she's unable to join us on the air right now. So, one triple eight, four, one to twenty, three, eighty, five to one, triple eight, forty, one as TJ, against Iraqi, Rock Hill South Carolina. Any assistance you can offer be at from table standpoint or from a multiple use desk type situation. Anything you have that you can assist with. To help this lady with her four kids to get him set up virtually learned because she said not prepared at all for virtual learning based upon the family finances. In the fact, they don't have a kitchen table so forth and so on. That's our goal for how can we help you Wednesday we'll see what happens next. and. So many people offering to help a single mom. Who Lives in Rock Hill South? Carolina? Dad. Has left the family. He does very little to help. He is ordered by the court to help I guess. They're barely getting by. Four kids now? At home and she's not prepared for they don't have a kitchen table. They don't have a desk they're using the counter, but it's four kids at a counter. And so many of you have reached out and said Hey I have a desk or a table arrive something and I can help within the area but this is kind of special because. Oh, really I don't think I've ever gotten cold food. Yeah. I've never had a problem with cold food I. Don't think we've ordered a lot. Since the pandemic right? Who maybe it's a living in the suburbs thing it takes longer to get from restaurant to the. I live right there on on top of the restaurants. Which is why I don't know why y'all getting food delivered. You should just walk downstairs and get it. I've had the pizza place that I live above deliver it to. I know. It's one of the things we've talked about moving back to the suburbs next week is the fact that will do more cooking at home and everything he just seems like. I gotta get dressed and then I got a ride the elevator down sixteen flights and go get my car and go through the gate Reagan's doesn't get dress. Are you waiting on a person to come down to the building? Are you bringing food if you are bringing food where you from I got done on it? maybe you're just not made for getting food delivered in the Big City? I think the suburbs are more your speed. Maybe. What do you mean more? My speed I'm just trying to get food I just need you to let me know that you're there. You think he's a little past the age of getting food delivers. Like he can't be that guy that ordered the food. He look. You know he doesn't probably even live here. What we fair a lot of times. It does say Amanda on the things they're way again. Know you're from door to shoot. I'm asking where you're from and then he says I don't know. When I Pass Gas, It Doesnt Smell Bad!

"Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles in their dementia caregiving journey. Welcome to let's talk dementia. Here's your host bestselling author Carol. Hello everyone and welcome to. Let's talk. You mentioned Carol Holloway. Your host and today we're GonNa talk about your sniffer smelling and how important that is for a healthy life. Have you ever thought about it? Well it's true. The senses smell is an important part of our world. If you think about walking into your house in smelling chocolate chip cookies biking how it just. It's a happy feeling. It's a feeling of lightness. Potentially maybe takes you back to when you were in third grade. You came home in. Your mom was baking chocolate chip cookies. Or maybe it's the smell of apple pie or I don't know what is it that you smell. That takes you back in you got. That's happy hour that makes me think about well. I can tell you for me this right here. White Diamonds Cologne. This bottle of white diamonds has huge memory. Attached to it for me and this is the Cologne Mama War for years and years and even when she was still well. I remember going to the bank one day in standing behind a lady and I went. I had this big whiff of her clone in. You've got on white diamonds don't you? She said yes. How do you know and I said you smell Mama and so for me now? White diamonds is important. I absolutely pedals spray this on every day when I smell. That's my sweet. Mama makes me happy to smell white diamonds? So that since the smale is important in our world for various reasons well for our folks with dementia especially Alzheimer's Type Dementia. They have lost. The Census Mail isn't that sad. We ask you this when you eat. What is the I sense? That is activated. Well it's probably for most of us going to be site we see it or we smell it. It's going to be one of the two depending on where we are in relation to the food right. If we're coming into the house someone's cooking we smell I don't know for tries out. Let's not talk about French fries a Doodo some French fries. We smell them. So we're GONNA eat I with our sense of smell or maybe we see from a distance a chocolate cake on the counter. We see it and then we smell it. Those two important things but with Alzheimer's in that sense mail it drastically affects appetite. Folks don't get as hungry as they might because they can't smell the food now. That's important if you're in a community setting where you're not seeing the food being cooked you're not in The food is not in front of you until they bring you that plate of food and then you see it so if we have not smelled it ahead of time. Our appetite is not wet as much as if we might have seen this food and smell the food so then the food is placed in front of us. We haven't seen it. We don't smell it and now we are to eat it. If it's not one of your most favorite foods in the world that might be a problem you might think I'm hungry But if it's your most favorite fruit light French fries he gonNA take right in so the senses smell is very important for our appetite. It's also a protective smale win. We smell certain things. We go back the truck up. I need to stay away from that. Like smoke. Few smelled smoke. You'd be something's on fire. Let's figure out where the smokes coming from a smell it. Do you smell it or that really strong smell that we get from gas and chemicals. Gasoline has an awful smell. Does it not if you get it on? Your hands is like us. Give me something to wash my hands. I can't stand this. I tell her. That's why woman marries. A man is to pump gas and carry heavy. It's too important. Things need to do for us but chemicals. Lots of chemicals have awful smells. Lots of cleaning solutions have awful. Smells When I think about cleaning solutions I think about clorox. Ooh Nasty Smell. How is that protective for us? Census male. Well. Let's pretend that you've just you've got someone living with you has dementia and you have just poured a couple clorox to put into your white load for the week and the phone rings and you walk away in your level and walks behind in they see cop and they that was like mount. Do let me drink it in The clorox because when they brought it to their mouth their sense of smell was gone. They didn't get up and go. Oh Gosh that smells horrible. Let me on not drink this. By the time they discerned that it's already on their tongue. It's already there now. Chances are they're not gonNA drink a lot of it. It's going to be pretty nasty. They're going to spit it out. But by that time we've already ingested some. I think about the chemical smell that is with natural gas. You think about how protective that is as I understand it. Natural gas has no smell so they put something in. It makes it smells horrible so that if there is a lake you will know it. But if you've lost your census failure on damn well. The sense of smell is important also regarding spoiled food. You know you look in the refrigerator. I don't know how long does it cleaned up. Jurors I keep my pretty much rotated online. Keep old food in there. But you open it up. You take with an. Oh good gracious that sales horrible. Get rid of it but someone who's lost. That protective smell might eat food. That's not good so with our loved ones who are still maintaining their own household. We need to clean out. That refrigerator printed frequently Tell you body odor. That's another place where the protective sense of smell we lose it and then are we start to have breakdown of skin off because of skin on top skin has been washed. You know anywhere this skin touches skin is a place where we have the potential for the breakdown of that skin behind the ears under the arms under the breast around the Genitalia. Between the fingers between the toes anywhere skin touches skin. We can have breakdown. We start getting body odor. We don't notice it so it's protective that we start going that smell so good. It must be mean we get cleaned up and of course. You're an faces a mania. We've got some spell going there and we know that our loved ones with dementia will sit with a dirty depends on your like. Why are they doing what they not go? I think just pooped in it. Don't smell good. Let's get him cleaned up worlds because they don't smell it so they've lost that sense of smelling and they're not detecting any longer. That's what's happened. The sense of smell is important. I want to read you a joke. That is in my book. Let's talk dementia. I gotta find it right here. that relates to this. That I thought was pretty not pretty funny. Oh here is seventy one ice table of contents got there carol. Oh my goodness I put my glasses on a much. Better can see okay. Where readers ever helped the raiders around your neck in reach again a pair readers in realized. Now you've got one around her neck and one on your head. I wonder about myself okay. An elder an elderly woman went to the doctor's Office for a checkup. The doctor asked if she had any problems. The woman said that she had a terrible problem with constant passing gas however the incidents were silent and did not smell in fact she announced she pass gas at least ten times she sent. She'd been the office since they were silent in didn't smell. No one knew the doctor listened to her story and then gave her a prescription for some peels. He told her. Take these pills for a week in combat to see him. One week later the elderly woman returned to the doctor's office an complaint. I don't know what you did but those pills have caused my win to smell awful. They are still silent but boy do they stink. The doctor replied good. Now that your son is is cleared up. And if you're listening to this I am holding about a thirty two ounce Stainless Steel Mug here. And I like it because it keeps everything everything ice and cold. But I'll tell you it's heavy and even though it's N.. Dented here in the middle where I can hold it still a lot from my hands. I've had thumb surgery in the past accomplished my bionic hand and sometimes holding. Heavy things is a problem now. Your individual with dementia most likely as a senior citizen and Holding heavy things begins to be a problem. There needs to be a handle on this grouper. You can get one of these stainless steel mugs. That has a handle on it. That's a a great idea otherwise maybe not so much then let's think about our folks with dementia or really anybody. What our preferences do we like? Our liquids really really cold like Carol does. I don't want Luke warm. I won't either hot or cold in northern little but that may not be what your loved one with dementia prefers so think think about that. What is their preference? Make sure you're accommodating that Wael That's a good sip of that drink. I do enjoy it. Believe me I I am fully hydrated as evidenced by many times day. I go to the bathroom but that is not at all what I wanted to talk with you about it. Just got my everything in life seems to lead to my my brain to think about dimension you get to hear about it. Well I have the distinct privilege for the last eight and a half years to conduct Church Church worship for folks with dementia. I did this in South Carolina when my Mama was alive and she attended worship and she would often complain afterwards about what she didn't like about that particular service. The preacher said that she didn't agree with tuition. I'm like Oh will can't make everybody happy. Then we moved to Florida and I walked through. ooh The common airy visiting brother-in-law his assisted living about two weeks after he moved and they were having church worship and I said would you like me to play the piano for you I've yeah while the next thing. I know I was playing the piano every Sunday. The next thing I know the guy who was worshipped later ceased being worshiped later and I was tasked with being worship leader and playing the piano which is not easy. That's a lot to get done each Sunday up and down and working with my folks who have dimension inch. I'm also the one who has to serve communion because our pastor Who is resident? There is in a wheelchair and he can't get around so curious. got a lot to do on Sunday mornings. But it's all good. I enjoy it. You never know what's going to happen at a church service there sometimes. It's just very very interesting so one on Sunday there was a discussion about the origin of the song. It is well with my soul and one lady in attendance. Who lived there? I just hope this wonderful story about how it went on standing there smiling. Oh best is wonderful. Because I'm not entirely sure. She had all the facts right but argue with her in another person should know. That's not how it happened. It happened like this and they proceed to tell their story and the lady goes well. That's not right and I'm GonNa tell you how I know that's all right. Carol standing there in the middle gone all my goodness. I don't know what to do about this and so I got out of the situation somehow. Well we On a couple of Sundays ago. We're going around the room and ask them to tell me individually what they were thankful for. We had about ten or fifteen people so we could do that and this one lady said. I'm thankful that I had fifteen children. Holy moly she had fifteen children for real. I said good gracious woman. That's just amazing. Will the next person to speak was pastern as pastor. What are you thankful for? He said I'm thankful I did not have fifty inch each village. Isn't that funny. Do a damn bridge or I am. They have won fifteen. I mean Kudos. Do you guys guys who do. But it does not care Have done that but it's just very interesting. The things that we hear The prayer requests sometimes are so far out out there that you know. There's just no way that story could be true. I think that then every once in a while I find the story is true but most I'm thinking this story isn't true. So are we going you to pray for prayer request of something we know. That's not true when we do our corporate prayer. When you know what you can absolutely do that you can mention it word for word just like Mrs Smith might requested prayer For her mama that you know her moms know her mom could be alive. Just mentioned it. Go ahead INSEE just like she did because the good Lord knows and he knows your heart. He's not at they're going. I can't believe you're bother me about this. He's not doing that. or or you can just say and I want to pray for all the prayer requests that were mentioned a day each and every one of them and not go into detail but what we would never want to do his Co.. I'm unwilling to pray for about anything but you know your mom died. Nineteen eighty six up Brian for her. Of course I told you before. We would never want to do that. And do we ever want to embarrass our vokes ever but especially among peers in group setting or church sitting. Nobody wants that. So just don't do it This past Sunday I was playing The prelude music we were doing some Christmas music because I could still get away doing Christmas and this lady was just singing everywhere and I said why. Don't you lead the worship music for me and I'll play the piano and she's all. I couldn't do that. Come on up here. We'll practice for today. So she came out we practice a little bit and she goes no no no I could just never do. I could just never do it. And I'm thinking she had such a good job like just encourage her to be a part of this. Yes that's fine. If you don't WanNa do it could sure use your help. All I want you know when it came time for service and I said everybody turned to the first page of their bulletin. The word smart. I assan which I think was all held power Jesus's name acid it's printed there and she hopped up and she ran up front. Just started saying it with me so it was pretty Neat Church Church service with our books with dementia. We never really know what's going to happen. I WanNa ask you this when you go to your church. Are you always show what's GonNa happen there. We'll see you think you you are but if you've got kids in front of you one of them's got to be taken out. Because he screaming fit and you've got somebody in front of you. This rummage through their purse hunting opinion or worship Shit piece of Gum. They've got to UNWRAP rattle rattle in you. Never know what's GonNa go on in this. Just Live Life Church with folks with dementia. It's really very similar. We never know what's GonNa go on. We're maybe a little more accommodating because we realize what we're dealing with but we should be like that in all of our life anyway but our services are short sweet and to the point. Where about thirty thirty? Five minutes in Bibi Bobby Boo. We're out of there but but we do have good music if I do. Say so myself and the sermon and Time of prayer and time of Thanksgiving in it's important for folks folks in touches a part of their soul that needs to be touched and happy to be a part of that. I just prayed Sunday. Somebody get done argument with the other person because you just never know. Do you. Guys have a great day plan on going to church this Sunday okay. Senior life. Organize Your Junk

"Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Hells. Let's talk dementia. Podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles in their dementia caregiving journey. Welcome to let's talk dementia. Here is your host bestselling author Carol. Hal Well Hello Caregivers I'm Carol. Let's talk the Ninja in oblige today. I'm recording this. At the end of the day in higher boy he can tell. I've been busy day. It has been an interesting day on. Today's been my. Let's get some physical work done so we decided to put some clothes shopping in our front closet and taken everything out. As I had mentioned in previous episodes it was all piled up behind me. Didn't looks good in To arrange those shells and put it all back in and I took that upon myself to do today some pretty pooped yes I am but why do you care that I put showing in way? Don't let's face it you really don't. That's okay but I wanNA talk to you about organization in your life and how it will help you as a caregiver and then organization for your loved one with dementia in both of them are equally important. I am a big organization for you know. All of my cans are turned with the label facing just exactly right so now opened my cabinet. I can easily and quickly find what I want now. That is good for me. It works very well for me. You may not be that hung up on organization but I can just tell you one thing. If you spend a little time organizing at least those parts of your world that you use frequently with your loved one with dementia you'll find caregiving to be made a little easier for example if the bathroom is piled up with a bunch of shampoo bottles and you know old toothpaste tubes have not been thrown away and just stuff just lots of stuff everywhere that's GonNa make it harder view to quickly reach what you might need to help care for those personal needs of your loved one on the flip side of that if your loved one is the one doing some of the care themselves and they keep reaching for. Tuba toothpastes in its ninety seven and a half percent empty. They may be getting just a minute amount out. They may get frustrated and get nothing out they may give up and not brush their teeth at all and none of those are good so we only want the one to that has toothpastes in it therefore them. We want to make sure that the drawer in the bathroom that they have accessible to the doesn't have things in it that they can't use for instance. Do you WanNa have a pair of scissors in that drawer. Last issues in my bathroom door to cut tags off clothes and things like that but do you want to have that in the jaw of someone who might be dealing with dementia. Well maybe not. That might not be good idea. So keep those things in mind that organization will help them and it will help you. It's an important thing organization to will make the home safer I can tell you. I have been in homes that just had J. U. N. K. everywhere. That's a nice word for they have is Jewish just stuff everywhere and as a healthy individual Ask the caregiver. They had to walk around and in and out of stuff on the floor and just knick Knack Patty wax everywhere that's very disconcerting for someone who has dementia. First of all is dangerous if they've got to maneuver themselves or Heaven forbid a walker or wheelchair around a bunch of junk then we're increase in the odds of a fall. Now listen uncle or has been the hospital three times in two weeks in been X ray three times in two weeks falling. You don't want to do this. You don't won't your loved one to fall sooner or later something's GonNa break and then and boy do. We have a problem. Sometimes those things could have been avoided by getting rid of the junk senior house. Organize it put it up on. Shales label the shales labeled the bins. I'm I'm big on labelling things. My pantry has blue plastic bins on each shelf and they are labeled as to what goes in that. Been that way we never hunt for things. It's in the right ban in take zero point six seconds to put something back in the right Ben now yeah took a little bit of time to make the labels I had to print them out on computer make them look pretty. 'cause I'm little bit obsessed about that but it is worth it that will help your loved one to so let's Pretend that your loved one knows that their snack food is kept in this cabinet and you have plastic bands that say Giannis cookies in in that ban you put gifts what. Janis cookies now. You don't put something else in the pork and beans. Don't go in the container. This is Janis cookies. You put Janis cookies in that. You might have one. That says afternoon. Snacks something like that. That is easy for Janey to quickly find what she might need might also have been says Giannis Cup plate or a spoon knife went maybe not now but you know what I'm saying those things at Janus with us and they go in that being every time you wash and dry put them right back in there in Janey knows where to look for her stuff. Organization is Wonderful Organization will do for you is. You won't go buy junk you don't need when you're making grocery lists you can easily look for what you want because you're pantry in your bathroom your linen closet your supplies. There are organized now if we can save money as caregivers well if we can save money period. That's a great thing but as caregivers we have a lot of expenses caring for our loved one buying depends in the pads and the wipes and the powders powder and we don't use powder anymore. I used to love baby powder but we don't use that anymore. The lotions there we go and the medications and this and the that that we need is very expensive. So keep your costs down by watching what you have monitoring what you have because you gotTa Organiz. Then you don't have to buy stuff that you go back later and go my word. I didn't need a forty eight pack of toilet paper because there's one in the closet. I didn't even know I had so don't do that. I do love me some organization. I truly do. It makes me happy. Gives me a feeling of happiness and contentment? To look in and see that I'm taking care of what I have spent my resources on it gets very godly thing to do in lots of ways because I believe that I am put here on this earth to be a steward of my time and my talents in my treasures and when I am organizing my stuff so that I know what I'm spending my money on what. I'm not spending my money on than I am. Being a good good What's that Word Stewart? There's is good steward of my treasures in. I think the Lord looks down upon and blesses it signed about that. Well then there's my dear my dear sweet Mama who passed away may thirty first as you guys know. She kept a clean house. Mama's house was never dirty but after she got dementia. I went to her office space in her house when de Bunch of junk on her desk. Let's make you filing system said okay. So we made logical bank filing system mortgage filing system Blah Blah Blah. Then I made a file that said things I want to keep and I said so. If it's an oddball something and you're just not sure where to put it. Just put it in the things. I won't keep file will. It was some weeks later. I went back now sitting at the desk. Stay with Mama not open the file drawer and all her files were sitting there. Nice and neat with nothing in them except what I had put in them except for the filed is said things I want to keep and let me tell you why it was packed. Full Mama wise this awful. Why didn't you put it elsewhere? She's because it was things I wanted to keep so I put it in the things I will to keep file. Bless her heart. She thought that was funny and quite make quite Sanson course. Being me little bit obsessive I had to go through sort through all of that. She had a sign in her house. That said I'm well organized as long as nobody asked me where anything is well. We don't WanNa be like that. We WanNa be organized so that we can take the best care possible of ourselves. You got enough stress going on in your world. Make it a little less stressful by Organiz new junk in the easier for your loved one with dementia. This thought for today. I'm not gonNA organize anything tomorrow. I don't think I don't know I might blessings and smiles on your day bye bye. Dont You Remember?

"Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles in their dementia caregiving journey. Welcome to let's talk dementia. Here's your host bestselling author Carol. Welcome to let's talk dementia. I'm Carol how will your host and today we're GonNa talk about talking something. We've done our whole life. Most of us a few exceptions. Obviously but we always communicate. We HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH FOLKS. We tell them what we think they tell us. They think we either agree or disagree. And we have these conversations about life. Well conversations and communication become a problem with folks with dementia. This one I want to talk with you about today. Communicating with our loved ones is important. Everyone communicates in some way. Even when our folks become non verbal? They can no longer put sentences together are maybe even forget senses they may not can even get two or three words together But they still communicate and they will do that by their actions by their facial expressions. What they are doing with their body on you pay attention you can learn a lot about people you know this when someone comes home from work and they've had a bad day and they just got the look on their face you just know. They've had a bad day. They didn't have to come in and go. I've had a bad day. You can just tell by looking at them. Or if they're in pain you can tell that by looking at your loved ones so being aware of the bodily Of your of your bodily actions the movements of the body the movements of the face how the body is responding to that life situation can help you have an inkling of what might be going on your loved ones world. Well a great technique to employ also is to Pete back the question to your loved one. So for instance Mrs Smith might say. Are we going to have lunch now? She might have just walked out of the dining room when she said that. Are we going to have lunch so you want to say? Are you asking me with? We're going to have lunch. Are you hungry? You want to repeat that back to her now what you want. What you want to say is Miss Smith. We just had lunch. Don't you remember and let me warn you? The words don't you remember will come off of your lips when you're talking with someone who has dementia and you know they don't remember. But you have used that phrase over and over and over again or you'll remember when and you go into some story and then you're sitting there. Think they do not remember. Why did I do that? So my response to you is just let that go. Don't beat yourself up. Try not to say it but believe me. You're going to say this but instead a sign you should remember that we just a Mrs Smith. Good gracious no you say back to her. Whatever it is she said in the form of a question. So are you hungry? Are you telling me you would like something to eat to which she might say? Well no but I would like to take a nap. So now we've We've got a little deeper into what it is. She's wanting she's wanting to get your attention to get something she needs but maybe she tells you she does want to eat and maybe she just finished eating will. That's when you find a cracker or some popcorn or some kind of appropriate snack that she can have a little bit of taste of an is probably gonNA satisfy her. But you don't ever want to go. Oh Good Gracious. We just ate. Forget it and walk off and not acknowledge her question. Is there ever a time in your life when you feel okay about asking a question and being ignored you do not you want somebody to acknowledge that you are on this planet that you have a thought that you have a question? Somebody needs to acknowledge that in some way. They may not respond. How you want but you need. You Won't be knowledge your folks with dementia are still the same way. So you might say are you asking will eat again and you put your arm around her and you maybe walk her to her living room or into her apartment or to her bedroom wherever she's living in begin to have a conversation with her at this point we might want to start redirecting Mrs Smith. You Might WanNa say something like you know mismatch last night at my dinner at my house we had an start talking about dinner at Your House last night and how your husband just loves the Fried Chicken you fix in now. You've you've taken her away from her being hungry. We're going to start talking about some other topic that redirection. That works good too if they come up to want to do something on that. You can't do right then and I can tell you. My mom was very particular about her fingernails. She always wanted him look good and she would tap them when they started to get chip. Turn her nails and she felt like she needed manicure. Even wish couldn't get awards out that meant get my nails done right so someone might might say. Can we go get a manicure? Are we going to get a manicure? When am I going to get my haircut in those are very viable important? Things in you can respond with. I'm GonNa get it done but I'm busy. Take break chill out. I can only do so much or you can say. Gosh. That's a great idea. Way should get our nails done. Why do you think about if I make an appointment and we go tomorrow because I don't think we can get in there today? We can go tomorrow. Is that okay with you? And they're gonNA be acknowledged they understand that you understand what they want. They feel completed in that thought. And they're like okay. Tomorrow will be good now. Tomorrow's GONNA come in. You may not have that appointment. You might not can get the appointment you might not can take them a whole host of reasons. Why TOMORROW THAT APPOINTMENT WON'T HAPPEN? But one of the beauties of dementias. They're probably not gonNA remember that their ability to understand space and time where they are and in what time of the day of the week of the month of the year of their world. That they are in is all off kilter so tomorrow will come and they most likely are not going to go. You Know Carol told me yesterday. We're going to go for manicure. I better get ready for that. Probably not gonNA remember that. So that does work to your benefit so use that. But you don't WanNa say anything negative to them. I'm real good about saying to people when they are telling me life situations with their loved one. What's going on? They had this particular conversation many times. That conversation is with a sibling. Yes with siblings. Who are SORTA maybe a little bit involved in the care giving but not big Tom? Involved in the care giving and we have this conflict going on siblings in dementia. Care giving I get more phone calls about that. Oh my goodness that's probably my talk in my top two or three subjects that we have is siblings that In the issues going on there but what I will say those votes is. How did you leave that conversation? How did that conversation end what I have learned and I just got to tell you I think this but I know this? Don't practice it well but I know it in my head is that we need to leave conversations on a positive note if we leave a conversation in our world on a negative note that negative thoughts. GonNa stick in your brain. Let me give you an example Go through on Amazon and read the reviews people write about my books and often wish that there's this one I could take down because it's not a Nice Review. I'm like how can you read my book and I think it's wonderful wonderful in. There's a bunch of reviews about my book and they're all good except for this one woman who wrote something that I didn't think was nice. And that's what sticks in my head. It doesn't stick in my head all those nice things. Everybody else said. Just that one woman who wrote something. Well that's live. We have a way of dealing on the negative. You know there's a saying that one bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch will it? Sorta Kinda does because if we reach him that basket of apples and we pull out the one. That's bad we probably are not going to risk reaching in and getting one of the other two hundred fifty. Six that are in that basket. That are good way like no not doing that. All I got was a bad apple. And that's what they sell it. That stores bad apples will know there was just one bad apple. You Happen to get it so we want to leave our loved ones on positive notes. When we are communicating with them we want to say things up lifting and joyful and happy or silly independent on. If you've got my mom or not saying something inappropriate. Just make her giggle. And don't you think that's what's good will I do and I don't have one problem of saying something. Little bit inappropriate. If it made my Momma giggle because Momma dealt with paint she dealt with anxiety she was depression and if I could relieve any of. That are making her giggle where you can bet. That was top of my agenda for the day. That and getting hard els done 'cause she wanted them done. So what you want to do to and this is my one final tip for you is. Don't use diversion therapy to keep from doing something you should do. So if they say I need to go to the bathroom. We don't WANNA use diversion therapy. Because we don't want to have to fool with that that's going to bite your but later because then you've got all that cleaning up to do and if they say. I'm hungry. Don't say well we're going to eat at six o'clock in only four o'clock now. Don't do that. Just go ahead and give them a snack. It's much easier to solve a situation in the moment than to keep putting it off if you can some things we can't do. It's not like we can just stop our day and go get a manicure ride or go get the hair donor or whatever the situation might be. There's a million and one reasons you would use diversion they are. There are still times when we need to act right the end and help our loved ones. Whatever it is going on tomorrow. We're going to talk about what to do when your loved. One says things like your fat ugly. The happens to hope. You have a great Dane. I'll see you tomorrow. Blessings and smiles. Coronavirus Dont Talk About It!

"Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles in their dementia caregiving journey. Welcome to let's talk dementia. Here is your host bestselling author Carol. Everyone I'm Carol. How welcome to. Let's talk dementia. Well today. We're GONNA talk about what everybody on. The planet is talking about Corona Virus. Oh my goodness is there a channel you can watch on TV or radio station? You can tune into or group of people who get together that don't talk about it. It's just it's what our world is all about. Well I am fifty nine years old. I think that's right While I will be this year and I never recall a time in my life. Wear anything like this has ever happened. Never I do remember when We were in looking for the the clocks to change over to the midnight hour for the year. Two thousand come in and everybody was freaking out with the computers. Due in the world would come to an end kinds of crazy stuff of course nothing like that happened. But that's as close to this kind of chaos in our world as I recall but sure enough. That's what we're dealing with. Well I know you're hearing everything don't do this. Don't do that and stay away from this and stay away from that and I'm not gonNa tell you all that stuff you've already heard fourteen times you don't need one more person telling you but I didn't WanNa put one thing in your brain that I want you to be very aware of in. Its don't don't talk about the virus. The Corona virus in front of your loved one with dementia. Don't do that. The last thing you need is for them to have negative thoughts on their mind. Negative thinking you want them to only have happy. Happy joy joy. You remember how we've talked about that before. That's what you want so I want you to spend your time in their time thinking about the happy. Happy parts of life in. They can't do that if their mind is full of the negative the scary the unknown the uncertainty that they are hearing from you that they're detecting from you in your voice in your thoughts and The way that you're behaving is probably a little different because there's some stress so don't bring that into their world. What we know is our loved. Ones don't remember squat deadly do I'll give you that. But what we do know is they are more likely to remember really really happy thoughts and really really negative thoughts now. The really really happy thoughts are not as likely to be remembered as the really really scary or negative thoughts. They will land on the brain and for some reason. I don't understand the reason of they will retain that information or more likely to retain that information then if they did not have it. So don't do that okay. Just just don't do that I had a conversation trying to find this year. As as you and I are having this conversation have a beautiful poem and I can't seem to get my hands on it right this minute. Where did it go about the Kuroda virus in a one to share it with? You may have to do that on another episode yet. Not Coming up but I do have something that was posted somewhere that I read. It said regarding all the things that we can't do can't do this. Don't get in crowds of more than the US. Stay ten feet away from people Blah Blah Blah with this came through on Somebody emailed at him. I think conversations will not be cancelled. Relationships will not be cancelled. Love will not be cancelled. Songs will not be cancelled. Reading will not be cancelled. Self Care will not be cancelled. Hope will not be cancelled. May We lean into the good stuff that remains. Do I hear an amen on that? I just thought that was really good telling you a husband are very glad that readings not cancel. 'cause we hit the Library Har- Yesterday boy picking up some books by authors. That we like are trying to use this time to I don't know reload and to relax and enjoy life as it is different for us now is different for everybody and I realize this time is probably even more difficult for you because of caregiving than it would have been had. You not been caregiving. But I don't know I still think in this time we can just breathe and remember that. Nothing's going to happen to you today. Where God has not already been and where he is not presently at also in his understanding. He didn't wake up. Oh my goodness I did not realize the crow virus is going to hit the United States. Water all those people come to or that it was going to hit China or anywhere else in all the planet. No no no. That didn't happen to the Lord. He no he knows and he is. He is a on that situation. He's in the middle of that situation in so hopefully that will bring you some peace. I hope I am. I am struck by several things lightly. One being our need to be understanding of other people to understand that their needs are different from ours and to be willing to reach out in ways other than with our hands. We have to reach out with our heart. That kind of came to on this poem that I told you Came through my friend and this is what it says. The poem called pandemic. What have you thought of it? As the Jews consider the Sabbath the most sacred of times safe from travel cease from buying and selling give up just for now on trying to make the world different than it is sing. Pray touch only those to whom you commit your life center down in win. Your body has become still reach out with your heart know that we are connected in ways that are terrifying and beautiful. You could hardly deny that now know that our lives are in one another's hands surely that is come clear. Do not reach out with your hands reach out your heart reaches out your words reach out all the tendrils of compassion that move invisibly where we cannot touch. "Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles lyles in their dementia caregiving journey welcome to let's talk dementia. Here's your host bestselling author Carol. Welcome to let's. Let's talk dementia. I am Carol. How will your host led the ear? Here this will be my last recording before Thanksgiving holiday. I'm going to take a few days off because a company coming your way my best friends coming in. I'm so looking forward to spending some time with her but I thought it was appropriate that we talk about gratitude and The effects it will have on you on your body on your mind on your body on your spirit on your whole day and you know what affects us affects others. You know you do not live in a bubble so that you only have things happen you that affect only hugh. It's just not true and when you're in a good mood others notice it when you are not so happy Kinda witchy mood and I said that the w Others noticed that I do believe me. That's why my husband had me using. Cbd Oil are still has me using it but anyway that is true for your loved one your or loved one will pick up on your mood believe me. And so if you're having a specifically or tragically bad day don't go visit visit your loved one or maybe if you're having that kind of bad day in your in home caregiver maybe you need someone to come give you a big time relief so you can work through that because it lands on our loved ones in varying negative way you know What happens to US emotionally will affect our day our week our year our lie you can think back on things from a long time ago made you manage just kind of irritates? You doesn't it or you can think back on a wonderful experience your wedding day or the day. Your baby was born the day you on publishers clearinghouse which if that has ever happened to you please make large donation MHM nation to our company. We could certainly use it but you think about those experiences you feel happy and light and that is true even in the face of dementia. What what we know is your loved? One can't remember squat deadly Du Da. But you tell them something good and they're more likely to remember it than the average information like we need to go to the doctor or A little bit. We're going to get a shower. Those things are not gonna remember but really good news they they might remember. It increased chance that they will but bad news. There is a huge increase chance. They're gonNA remember that so we do. Not I don't want to inflict upon our loved ones who've got enough to deal with our issues for the day is a one way we can help with that is trying to exercise. That part of our brain Two employees that activity known as gratitude. Gratitude is it's just amazing. I ran an article. Daily Health Post editorial dated January. Two Thousand Nineteen is said neuroscience reveals gratitude literally. rewires your brain to be happier now told you your brain is very malleable on the neuro. plasticity in your brain meaning that it can change God is very real. NEUROGENESIS happens so we can change our brain and we can change who we are by the things we do the things we attitudes we have in with gratitude so a study was done at the university. We Have California at Davis by Dr Michael McCullough of the University of Miami University Miami and the University of California Davis is Dr Dr Emmons. I'll get it right here if you're lucky so they took subjects and had them To study the practice of gratitude into one third of the study of subjects in the study were asked to keep a journal a for which of things for which they were grateful just to write down each day they were grateful for another third was asked right down the things that just really aren't them daily irritations you know the people. They just won't slap around a little bit and the third group. The last third was asked to write down just daily situations with no emphasis on whether they were good or bad positive or negative just situations you know what happened happened. During the day. The gratitude group after ten weeks study reported feeling more optimistic and positive about their lives than the other group. Oh they did. Honey child was right down the things they were grateful for. I have a physician on the board of directors for our not for profit and he said a study was done that if you write down ten things a day you are thankful for the effect it has on your body. She is better than PROZAC PROZAC. That's chemicals. Oh Yeah we don't know really what all it's doing is maybe not so good for us but tell me one thing just one thing that could be harmful about writing. Ten things should right before or maybe you just want to write three things. You're right we'll start with three. Write that down every day. Other research into the physical effects of gratitude report even more tangible results focusing on the positive and feeling grateful can improve your sleep out Hallelujah. Told you I've been having trouble sleeping for very long. I seem to wake up and it's like Oh let's go back to sleep and I've been used on the Tara breathe oil. It's helping me so much but having that positive attitude can can help improve your sleep. Quality Reduces your feelings of anxiety and depression. Well that all makes sense. If you're anxious in you're depressed you know you may have so much on your. Brian keeps you from sleeping to people. Experience less fatigue and less inflammation. That is the key word in what we talk about. As reducing inflammation in our body inflammation is so bad for your body in every way possible for your brain for your. I'm good Alma. Work GotTa Get rid of inflammation and people are more susceptible when they are not grateful. Oh my goodness that's that's pretty neat. So the reasons why gratitude is so impactful to health and wellbeing is because it begins in the brain. The areas of the brain showed increase increase. Activity led to in conclusion that the motions of gratitude support a positive and supportive attitude toward were others and a feeling of relief from stressors. I spend the morning at nine from nine to ten every morning that I can at our pool which is one of the reasons. I'm so happy to live in his tropical climate where I could do it pretty much year round so I do my exercise. I do my my boobs in the air polluting. Now work my arms and then I work my legs and then I take about ten minutes with some meditative him music going on where I just float around with my eyes closed and I listen. Listen to that wonderful music and I pray in Attila Lord everything. I'm thankful for some days. I don't close my eyes Yaw. Did you know Christians can pray with. Their eyes is open. Who knew that? But I'll keep my eyes open and I'll just absorb the beauty around me. Nature The sky the palm trees the flowers hours observed nature thankful for it. I'm telling you my day is better when I've had time at the pool and I'm convinced it's from moving my body and how good that is for me. I because I take time for that meditation. Gratitude also has a downstream effect on the metabolism stress in a lot of other behaviors. And we know that this act of writing down what you are thankful for can even have a significant effect up to three months after riding riding down that crazy you know that if you are interacting with your loved one with dimension you go. There's no sense in going to sing. Momma she don't remember been there. Fire named You know that attitude you heard from family members probably the ones you wanted to choke 'cause they said such thank but what you gotta realize is A positive visit where you left Mama. Feeling upbeat will lay on her for at least two hours. Afterwards in a very positive upbeat way we see bloodpressure beings Lowered anxiety being decrease. The chances are they want to wander being decreased simply because you had a good visit with them. NEPHEW GONNA I WANNA go visit being a crappy mood. Just stay yourself at home. Because they don't need that we know that for adolescents who show gratitude. They have an inverse correlation relation between bullying and suicide risk. Yeah Yeah that's wonderful and did we have to take medicine for this new. We did not. So what do you need to do. Keep a daily Journal of things you rival for right now at least three things. It's good to do it firstly in the morning where you go to bed at night. I don't know that makes is a heck of a lot of different but just get it done. Okay make it a point to tell people in your life what you appreciate about them now. I'm GonNa tell you if there's one thing we are not good at got it is that is looking at others and gone. Thank you for you know I get up in the morning and do about in my husband gets up and he moves around a little bit but when I get back to the bedroom he's made the bed. Everything except the bedspread. He hates messing with our bids bread. But everything else is done in. Just as soon as AC- sees me starting the been spread he'll come and help me. You know. I just appreciate that I really do. It's not that he's standing there going. It's a woman's job to make the bed you know it. Let me help me what I can do. It remind people every day of the things they do for which you are right for and when you look in the mirror I want she to look at yourself and be grateful for the quality of life you have even in the stress of your caregiving. 'cause I tell you one day you're going to be on the other end of that journey. You're you're going to look back on it. And you're gonNA remember those days so I want you to be thankful for. Liam thankful for even in the advanced state of Alzheimer's Alzheimer's your loved one may be in that may be they are not experiencing. Yes maybe they are still able to swallow in eight food and they don't. I'll have to be on liquid nutrition. You know maybe they're able to recognize you to save your name to say their name. Maybe they can still get out and get in the car with you you and go places. Maybe they're still able to work but just experiencing some confusion. There's so many things in our lives. We need to be thankful for the article ends by saying through the power of gratitude. You can wire your brain to be optimistic and compassionate in that just makes you feel good the more you look the the more you can find things to be great for four so this is Thanksgiving time in no matter when you might decide to watch this show or listen to the podcast. Dad Wont Stop Laughing

"Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles in their dementia caregiving journey. Welcome to let's talk dementia. Here's your host bestselling author Carol. Hi everyone welcome to. Let's talk and Carol. How will your husband unplanned here? Yesterday we talked about. Mci that was three letters. Mild cognitive impairment in today. We're going to keep going with acronyms and talk about. Pb A which is pseudo bar affect. Pseudo Barr thank this order. You often hear it called so it came to my mind today. I had a phone call from client. She brought my attention that her dad has. Pba and it's not something. I hear a lot and I thought. Gosh we haven't talked about that in quite some time you can reach me to talk about what's going on in your world and my email address is carol at. Let's Talk Dementia Dot. Org and if you give your memorial call you back. It's very simple well. This gentleman has PBA pseudo Bowl Bar Affect in this is a challenging disorder that can be difficult to differentiate from the symptoms of other neurological diseases With which is associated. So what is? Pba will simply put PBA is the inability to control laughter in crying so we will find individuals who cry for a reason that we have no clue or they laugh at inappropriate times or for things that again. We don't know why they're laughing about. They may laugh when they cry. They cry when they should laugh in. They may cry or laugh for no logical reason at all. There's no stimuli in their world in their environment going on at that time that would make sense. Oh Dad's crying because feeling blank. It's not a normal response to live situation that brings about this crying or this laughter so it's very disturbing for the families very disturbing for the individual. Sometimes it's hard to diagnose PBA from depression but with depression. We see a fair amount of crying. That's COM WITH DEPRESSION. But we can tie it to an event or circumstance or a situation that has become so overwhelming that now tears are very active in very prominent very prolonged Days on him but we can tie it back to that situation. I can tell you in my world. I've cried more the last year than I probably cried my whole life but as you know my sweet Mama passed on. May Thirty first that crying I can tie to an event In so that's different from. Pba PBA is crying. When we don't understand why it is described as a condition affecting the brain's affecting the brain with episodes of laughing or crying that are sudden unpredictable and occur without warning they could be excessive in aggravate exaggerated and inappropriate their involuntary. The people cannot control it. They don't think okay. I've got to stop crying. Got To stop crying. I'm GONNA stop crying. They may think that But they can't they can't stop crying. I'm not sure they would even think that because the brain is not allowing that process they are totally out of Any control over that situation. So it's a very interesting thing. as many as forty percent of Alzheimer's Mention patients have PBA. That struck me. I didn't realize it was so high. Forty percent of folks with Alzheimer's type dementia have pseudo bar affect disorder and as I said the inner episodes are inappropriate to the situation. There's no close relationship between the on emotional expression in the patient's mood in so it's it makes it difficult for the loved one so then you might. WanNa stop and think. Do I have a and good question to you? Well according to the Internet and the website. I looked at for the things that you need to be aware of answered the question. Are you more cheerful than in the past? And as I said can't with me yes I am accumulated sought to something Can you do that? Do you realize that you're crying more than in the past. And can you related to a reason Or You just overall depressed that would be a reason That would be the difference between crying because of depression in crying because a PBA with depression. You may cry a lot. You may not even know why you're crying today but you know you are depressed in that. Crying is related to the depression with. Pba You just cry and you can't stop it in. Somebody may be telling you a great job that is funny instead of your body being able to respond with laughter it responds with with tears. Well that's different than probably what you're experiencing Or do you have something really bad happening in your world you find out. Someone has passed and Crying you laugh. See how that's different from being able to connect your crying to a sad event or your laughter to a happy event is the emotion that you're having appropriate if it's not then we start thinking there's something going on. The question is heavy actually crying more in the past month not just felt like it but have you actually crying more in the past month when you think back on those events. Can you tie them to something? Does the weeping as come on suddenly with no warning at times when you're not expecting it in suddenly means that it's within only a few minutes in and not after several minutes of trying to control yourself you know I know that I hate to cry. I tell everybody I have one of those. Ugly CRIES OPRAH. Winfrey talks about in south by feel like. I'm going to cry. I do everything I can to stop it because I decry in so after. Several minutes are trying to gain my composure. I can stop the crying most time right with. Pba You cannot it something. You cannot control in a few filled tears coming on or if they started. Can you control them enough to stop them on the specialty in front of other people does that? Change the situation. Are you more likely to be able to stop them in front of other people than you would if you were alone because if you can control the crying it's not PBA because that is a neurological process in the brain that you don't have control over so as I was talking to my client this morning? She said there's a medicine called new DEXSA IN E U D E X A. I'm guessing I don't know It's very expensive But it seems to work really well for her dad so that was good news. I do know that some doctors prescribed extra authoritarian and Quinn quitting to help control the symptoms symptoms of PB. I I don't know how effective that is been. According to what I read it supposed to be pretty effective but whether it is or not. Aah Do not know but PPI can make just slightly more difficult for our folks with Alzheimer's in sometimes we'll see our folks with Alzheimer's crying with PBA type symptoms and will assume they're crying because they're frustrated in their sad in they're angry they're lonely in. That might be true but in the midst of that crying can you use version. They are be in. Pull them away from that crying. That thought process in. Take them to a happy thought process if you can they were not dealing with PBA but if no matter what you cannot change that mood for them so that they're no longer crying than we start wondering about PBA or if we find they're crying with laughter is appropriate or they're laughing when crying is appropriate. Then that's not Alzheimer's that's certainly would make you think. Pba Three letters and other ackerman acronym we may have another one on the next episode. I'm not sure But it is an interesting part of Alzheimer's type dementia and other dimensions also and that can certainly just make the journey more difficult for the individual end for the caregiver and remember that if it if that live situation is making your life as the caregiver difficult. It's making the life of your loved one difficult. Also they're not enjoying whatever it is causing you that extra worker that extra concern or that extra stress anxiety or tension. You might be film as the caregiver. Well they're filling too to some degree so keep that in mind. Pba look it up. Learn a lot. I hope that gives you some good information. I'll see you on the next episode of. Let's stop dementia by. Let's talk. Dementia would like to thank our sponsors National Association of Veterans and families. They Are Holding Me Captive

"Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles lyles in their dementia caregiving journey welcome to let's talk dementia. Here's your host bestselling author Carol. Welcome to let's talk dementia hero Hallel your host and. I'm glad you're joining me today. I am recording a couple episodes. All on the same day I got a little bit behind taking in some time off for the holidays normally would go change shirts so you would think record among different days but I just decided it is just not worth the effort so so if you're listening to this then you of course don't know you don't care but if you're watching this you're thinking she same shirt on yesterday new right ideas but anyway anyway of God to do today. So I thought I'd give some of these shows done in advance and hopefully something. Data's going to help you. Well I want to talk to you about this particular item on holding. And for those of you that are listening to this. What I have here is a shoulder pad that was given to me by a friend whose wife had gone through every stage of Alzheimer's type dementia? This shoulder pads says on it. Police call the police. They are holding they are holding holding me captive. The other side says please call the police. my father I can't read it anymore. I it it used to say. My father beats me On a shoulder pat. He came at me. And I'm like okay. There's a story here. How about telling me why WII giving it to me and the story behind it well? It was very disturbing In hard for him his wife at that point like I said was living in the last stages of Alzheimer's in they were living living together she was remember care. He was insistent and they moved there. Because that particular event had happened that surrounded that shoulder pad so his wife was very good about getting up in the middle of the night wandering around the house and he had put all kinds of locks on the doors up high where she couldn't reach them so she couldn't get out and wander down the road and them not know where she was and he did all these precautions to protect our but one one night he woke up she was nine the bed. He cannot find her wear issue and she gone in the basement and she was in a closet and she had shut herself south in the closet and she found somewhere along the way a sharpie. I don't know how that came to be and this shoulder pad was in a coat coat that was in that closet and she took it out and she wrote on that shoulder pad the things that were going on in her mind. Now why would she. They call the police. I'm being held captive. My father is beating me when you see when she was a little girl. Her father did beat her very frequently. It must have been too horrific existence. Then he would lock her in the closet and she would have to stay in that calls it until so he decided she could come out and from what I understood. That could even be a day or so. He would just labor locked in the closet so when she awoke that particular humor night in the middle of the night She was so far back in time. That that's what she thought was going on. And she made her way to the basement uh-huh and locked herself in the cost. Now that is just an incredibly sad story and it sounds like something. I'm making up but I promise you this really. They happened and this was given to me as a result the the shoulder pad but to think that white she was going through at that point in her life was so horrific I tell you you don't know what people are dealing with every day You look at people in you seem you think that just got the world handled it. Life is good. They look great. I look at them and they. They don't need to lose weight happy for them in their beautiful too and I pretty much hate people like like that. But you don't know what they're dealing with in this lady on top of dealing with Alzheimer's and being confused was back in a time in her her life. That was a horrific time of her life. Now you remember with Alzheimer's we lose our memories in the reverse order in which we gained them him so we are sitting here in your ear. Two Thousand Twenty. So those memories are GonNa be Lost in that reverse order. So we'RE GONNA lose two two thousand ten and then we're going to lose two thousand five and then we're glues nineteen ninety the nineteen seventy to nineteen sixty go backwards. So I don't know what year was that her or Dad Was horrifically awful to her. But that's how far back life in history that she had traveled. That's where she was living in her brain and it was an awful time of her life as if Alzheimer's wasn't bad enough but to land at a point in your life where you were being abused in mistreated so so awful. I mean award it just it toward a heart out for her. I can taste yeah. She was not easy to get along with. When I would visit her memory care I would drink owning? I'm just being honest with you. Because she was angry. She was very uncooperative. I don't care what food you gave her. She didn't like it. I don't care what Song you're saying. She didn't like it. Nothing made her happy and when her husband has been visited it did not make her happy because she did not any longer know who she not was. She was that far back in time she was way past the time from which which they had met she was a young girl but then when I realized learned her story my heart got a little more sympathetic towards her so I kept trying trying to reach her and to be to be accepting of where she was but I can tell you what she didn't want. She did not want to be touched. An I'm touchy feely girl. You know I wanNA hold your hand and rub your shoulder stroke your face. Do you think she wanted someone coming towards her to touch her. No because to her. You're coming towards her to her her. That's where she was in her life. Being aware of that in your loved one. Hopefully you know their story on. If you don't you need to find it out from someone who can share with you or if you're caregiving in a professional setting knowing the store that person your caregiving. Four what did they deal with in their early life as a child. Maybe they had abusive husband Whatever I had a client that went through AUSHWITZ yeah life was different from her that anything I could imagine but knowing bad it changed how I responded to her and her interaction action with me was changed because of it. Knowing about your person your it's important changes your caregiving journey. You know this is true for whoever whoever you're dealing with when you go into the grocery store and you're cashiers just a little bit of a mode you know sling in your eggs down the conveyor belt and you're thinking truck up you're gonNA break my eggs it well maybe instead of saying back the truck up you're gonNA break my eggs. We might need to respond in a kinder way with. Let me move those eggs for you. Are you having a good day to he died. How's your day been? It might just cut the anxiety in that tension right in half and they might take breath and relax a little bit. I tell you something I've been doing when I go to wall or I don't like go into Walmart. I'm sorry sorry Walmart. I just don't like him but I have to go. Sometimes I call my cashier by nine. They've got this big name tags on that name tag is not there just to you know. Keep their Bra in place while they cook into their shirt. No so you'll know there nine nine call her name in if you go. Hi Anna how are you. Hi Suzy Hi John. You would be surprised at how they they stopped all of a sudden like Gosh they call me by name. I'm a person I'm a real human being not just someone that's ringing up groceries or your purchase columbine it says little things we do in our life life that makes a difference yes it is learning about your people being kind of them and realizing that they are living in a different time and place than you are in maybe trying to understand what that time in place is can change their their world changers to we don't want to happen like this shoulder pad with please call the police on being held captive said story all right. Well I hope you have a good day. Hope that you will share joy. I hope that you will receive joy. "Senior Life Journeys Presents Carol Howls. Let's talk dementia. A podcast designed to help caregivers find knowledge power hope and smiles in their dementia caregiving journey. Welcome to let's talk dementia. Here's your host bestselling author Carol. Hi everybody welcome to. Let's talk dementia. I am Carol. How will your host? You're here today. We're GONNA talk about driving cars. Hell that can be a problem in like when loved ones have dementia. I was honored to receive a phone call from a lady that I had spoken with probably two months ago and then she heard me speak quite unexpectedly there. She was and I'm like Yay. I knew her and so she called me this past week very much in a state of trauma and those phone calls are sad and I was happy to be there for her and I'm happy to be there for you can email me carol at. Let's talk dementia. Tell me what's going on and give me your phone number and I'll call you back. Her situation was this dad. was very very very upset in dad has dementia and he's fairly far along. I would say a good mid stage progressive progressing mid stage in that every day. He is determined to get his car back. I mean angry reading to ready to fight. I won't my car back. They had taken Dad's keys because he's no longer safe driving and We know statistically when someone with dementia has an accident hurt themselves in someone else or else they killed himself in someone else and you know. That's just a risk we can't take on the peripheral vision of the human body changes as we age. That's the ability to see writing left while looking straight ahead or top to bottom while looking straight ahead and as we age normally that perfect vision get smaller and smaller but with Alzheimer's type dementia specifically it is drastically affected so that eventually that prevision vision gets down to just a very small little area and then our vision changes from binocular two mon- accuser vision meaning instead of seeing as. We're probably only seeing out a one that one has cataracts glaucoma and you can bet if they've got if your individual has gone through the stages of dementia. They're not seeing out of that. I because they're probably wearing the wrong prescription. We get to the point. We can't answer those questions at eye doctor about which is better one or two which looks clear. So we're probably wearing the wrong eyeglasses. So that makes Dr Driving very very dangerous. Plus our reflexes are off our ability to stop real quickly or go whoops. I forgot to do this. Whatever you know. Let me get over in the other lane because someone's coming towards me. That ability to respond quickly has left and It makes us dangerous as a senior citizen with dementia in so they realize this with that he was having some real driving issues and they took his keys away. Now as you might imagine. Dad did not set his two girls down and go thank you so much for loving me and caring for me enough that you looked out for me and you did the hard thing by taking my case away now. Wouldn't that have been wonderful now? He sat down and told them that they were all a piece of you. Fill in the blank and that he was disappointed them. He raise them better than they had in. He used EH precursor. He ever heard his whole life in words. They had not heard their daddy say in. It was awful. They were just petrified by this. They knew they could not leave. Data loan in for a week atop them on Friday. Yeah since Monday. They had tried staying with him overnight. He wasn't sleeping. They weren't sleeping. They were exhausted. He was exhausted. He had just recently come out of the hospital and Just it was a big mess in there like Carol. What do we do well? I'm sitting there thinking boy. I wish I had just a fantastically wonderful answer for them. But there's not a lot to answer for that I did have some suggestions in our go. Those with you but you've got to remember for our folks with dementia little by little by little. They are losing a piece of themselves and they know this don't think they're not aware of it. They are in for a man. You take away his keys and you have taken away a huge part of his identity now. May If you're willing to drive me around. I am willing to let you my sweet Mama. When she got lost in her car. One day going to the doctor came back the next day I said Mama how about if I just take you over where you need to go. She goes shoots suits may grow. Let's do it. I love it and that was it then. We sold a car done. Never know thought with men does happen but not as often as it will with the female because a man's identity is all wrapped up when he got his driver's license and got his first car and he can tell you what the car was what the engine was. And how much you pay or how much you get. How many miles a gallon it got blah blah blah blah blah. All that stuff I could care less about but a man cares about that. It is different. Their identity is wrapped around the ability to get out. Go and drive that car and being control and all of a sudden you have reached in snatch their keys and they can't get their to their car or get their car to cranks got no keys. I know a family that with their mom now. She was determined to drive and They went outside in DIS abled. Her car they thought that'll solve it in. She'll go out in liberty briquets car was gonNA crank and they thought problem solved even very advanced midstate dementia. She thought whom I have got AAA and she called triple a. and they came and fixed her car. There seriously backfired so they called me they said. Now what is what you need to cut your plane cancel AAA so that if she calls they won't come out but what she did instead is She got her neighbor to take her somewhere. He not people get creative. Is what I'm telling you. But even if you're getting there getting their neighbor take them somewhere is safer than them out driving what you have to think about someone who is just very intent on driving and you take their key away. They have just become a wonder risk. They may never have been wondrous before using daddy is not getting off his rear go. Waltham data just sits in his chair and drives his car yet but you take his key away now he may become a wondrous. 'cause Dad gone he's going to get out and go and if he gave drive. Just take off from walk so you have to be aware of that is helping this family realize so. I told him some things they could do is to use diversion therapy. I won't my case back. Give me my keys back right now. Right now with a whole lot of four letter words that a good Christian votes don't use and I should say to Him Dad. That's a great idea. We're GONNA get your keys. I've got to go to my house and get them. You don't have them right there for sure. You can't just magically make them up here no you gotTa have a delay in that but first let's get dressed and let's go get some launch because I'm starving and I know you are two or dad. Let's go do something something to divert his attention away from getting those blessed keys in his hand to going doing something else for some people that will work some people. It will not work for some people. They are so stuck so fixated on that one thing. They're not gonNA come off of it. I recently did a show about being fixated on numbers. That's where uncle. Ernie is my brother-in-law. He is so fixated on numbers. A still fixated on numbers cannot get off of numbers. Knock Cherie ever will so. With some people you can divert their attention and get them to talking about thinking about something else even for just a little while some folks no. They're going to be stuck on it. I also told them that Got To investigating a lot of questions digging deeper about what was going on with tach physically. I wondered if he had a UTI and come to find out does not still little. Not so sure. I believe that 'cause the doctor did the quick test where they can just real quickly with the urinalysis tail but not culture and I feel like he needs a culture because many times a culture will show you two. Ya with the little quick test in the doctor's office will say no so. I'm still kind of wondering about that. But Dad's not been sleeping. No of course neither have these daughters. They haven't slept in over a week. It's been constant three or four hours here three or four hours. They are in dad just being very angry. The rest of the time and uncooperative. But as it is affecting them not having good solid sleep. And they're healthy females in the problem of their life. It's certainly affecting dad and that lack of sleep. You guys know what it does do when you don't sleep well your brain can't function well in. I remind you that when you sleep in when you drink your vacuum comes on in your brain in it clears out all the toxins out of your brain. So that when you awaken your brain will work on higher levels function better nephew. Don't get in that deep sleep in you don't dream. Your vacuum does not come. On what the heads vacuums not been on for many many many days because he's not sleeping. We talked about Melatonin. Should he try MELATONIN and She said he tried Benadryl. One time and that made things really bad for him to make a note of that. Benadryl did not work good for her dad. Presa which you need to do is call the pharmacists or the doctor and say this is what's going on. Dad's not sleeping. Here's his list of medications. What can he take to maybe help him? Sleep also recommended that they get in touch with a neuro a chariot neuro psychiatrist psychologist and Begin to discuss. If there's something he take to help. Just take the edge off of his anger and his anxiety. 'cause he's very jacked up. Oh my gosh. We can't have that in. We're not about keeping people drug. That's not a good way to live. But living like he's living now where he cannot be helped by any intervention that is not on medical nature. That's not a good way for him to live or his family is going to destroy them all so hopefully pointed them in that direction they have over the weekend. Chosen a wonderful wonderful wonderful memory care community that Dad's going to be moving to and I'm praying that he is going to be receptive of that so I don't feel like it's going to be easy for the to make that transition but they've got to 'cause they can't stay with daddy twenty four seven and daddy can't be by sale. I hope they're story has helped you. Ensure has resonated with some folks who either are dealing with his driving issue or you remember it from the past I do want to tell you that. I had a client that when his mom moved into assisted living in they decorated her apartment beautifully. Now I've told the story before but it it stands to be repeated They were so proud of it. They walked her in and showed it to her and she said wow this is gorgeous and look. There's Janis pitcher. There's Jammies pitcher and they said well. Mom this is your new apartment. Your retirement community. She sat him down. She said Y'all sit down. Shed five children and four of them here in. She said I will not stay here. And I hope every one of you burn inhale and I was standing there going holy cow. Did that just happen? But you know what she com. Damn it didn't happen quickly. Took about a week. She calmed down. She lived there. I think three years quite happy and So you know the situations that we're facing in the in the immediate in the right now will change and with dementia.
