"They were probably trying to chase whatever big musical fad was going on, and they were like Godhra predatory is old news I mean honestly I two thousand two, who knows, but it was UK base so I don't know why they would think that. They would then work with the label cooking vinyl to make their own label. Take me to the hospital. Pets a weird fucking name. Fits the prodigy I guess. At this point, the prodigy just wasn't as big a thing in the states I think some of their shiny wore off for us because we can't stick with anything for more than a couple years. Yeah, we can't. Flash in the PAN especially if it's really popular in the UK or Europe. One hit wonder you're you're done. Yeah, that's it. That's all we can handle at best will let you have two albums at best. But that doesn't mean they still weren't a big deal. In the UK in November two, thousand eight, they released the album. Invaders must die. This one fared much better than their last still reaching number one in the UK, but at least peaking within the top one hundred of the US. PGA. Liam wanted to take them in a direction that was more like a mash up of their past albums. They may not have been moving masses around the world like they used to, but they were still getting the attention of big deal. This is really good music, and and this is who I am, and these are like like the music like really represents who I am. This is the music that built Maggie. Yes, and then, but I didn't get his into it as I should have when I was younger. Now I'm like getting into it now, and it's all just background shit. They influenced you, but you realize was influencing you. Yeah, pretty much, and it's all the shit that Ashley will, hate. Like I, like doing like the completed tip of anything you actually like this was all the stuff that would come up on MTV. When I was getting ready for school in the morning when MTV actually played videos, then I would look at it and be like I'm not fucking watching this internal. Good we'd be like college roommates and I'd be like hey, did you hear the new product? It's good even. Had such an idiot. Go. Underground rave to know you want to go. No, no I don't at all I really like what the fuck is a rave knows this Raven a barn. It's still streets so cool and then I'd be like. I don't drink. Radically shouldn't drink when you go to really shouldn't really only one thing you should do when you go rave, but then I'd be like I. Don't do drugs, but jokes on you I've been to I've worked festivals that Raves. Because it's all Tron Ika and it's like a outdoor festival at that point, if it's just people high off their faces. That's just woodstock. Yes, Woodstock but electric music instead Chanaka music so I, don't know, but the point and I was in Ireland so I don't know to that. You just ruined your point. Did I ruin it says I. Think Americans would be like this is a raven. Meanwhile Lake Europeans would just be. This is just like what fun is guys..

"Because even heroin. Huey Lewis is like now. This is a no, no, yeah. This is love and I'm going to just say so. Nothing was ever officially released except for two singles. The first in the fields was a hit for fill in nineteen eighty-five, the second single was called nineteen, and was released towards the end of one, thousand, nine, hundred five. The success of nineteen. Fill the opportunity to be back in the spotlight. He performed the song on various television shows and gave a number of interviews where he expressed optimism about the future. This downtime was allowing him to spend more time with his family and take some deep dives into Celtic music which he seemed eager to do, but all the optimism in the world can't compete with drug abuse, and his optimism about a future with his family and music was just a dream by now Phil was living in queue outside of London himself. He long ago sent his wife Caroline who he married in one, thousand, nine, hundred eighty. And their two daughters to live in Ireland for the specific purpose of being able to cheat on her without her, knowing Oh although I'm sure she fucking oh no girl new yeah. The days of thin Lizzy, the biggest band in the UK were long behind him in his dependence on heroin was completely out of control. The years and years of drug and alcohol abuse up to him on Christmas, day one thousand, nine, hundred five, when he collapsed at his home near London. Philomena Phil's mother found him unconscious. She had no idea he even had a drug problem. Wow, I. Don't know how. He managed to keep that from her, but wow, yeah, but Phil's wife Caroline did know in quickly transported him to a drug clinic. The issue was too troublesome for the clinic to handle, so he was brought to a hospital where he was diagnosed with sepsis. Eleven days after he I collapsed on January fourth, nineteen, eighty six. Phil passed away from heart failure and Brought on by Sepsis Oh, my God he was only thirty six years old, and left behind two young daughters, Sarah, and Kathleen Oh my God. Yeah, that is a fucking horrible horrible way to go. That's so sad. That's how old we are. Yeah, so he would have passed away after all that time after everything he did after trying so hard within lizzy. And trying so hard after that to have a solo career in lake, just not having a go anywhere. He died basically by himself in.

"We now have more friends do it with so many friends to heroin with now during the recording of thin lizzy next album black rose a rock legend drugs were where fill in the band were so reliant on it that they could not even perform if they weren't fucked up. That's what I'm saying like. Eventually with heroin, it comes back and bites you in the ASS. Yeah, you become that. Alter Ego that heroin house you to exude. You don't actually know what's going on our either at all. Yeah, no! It was all too much for Gary Moore, who, after playing a show in California on the fourth of July quit the band for good too many fireworks. It's spooked him about. It's like a little puppy calling like fireworks and behind the bed. They found him in the bathtub and he's also so strung out on heroin. Mostly blaming the hair on that I don't know if Gary Moore did heroin, but I'm sure he at least drank a fuck ton, yeah! He's fucked up enough. Yeah, once again. The band cycled through temporary guitarist to fill Gary's place finally settling on snowy white. In one, thousand, nine, hundred eighty. Okay! Sure sure why not? The band's next album Chinatown was released later that year to continued success. They're song killer on the loose reached the top ten in the UK, although it was met with a whole lot of criticism at the time serial killer Peter. sutcliffe known as the Yorkshire ripper. Wreaking havoc on England and the song was a bit too on the nose. Upset this was when the band started falling apart. This is when the band survival this is when. This is when even fill started falling apart. God escalating drug problems were ravaging the band especially. Fill both Brian Downey and Scott Gorham had to leave thin. Lizzy European tour because of health issues brought on by drug use Jeez snowy white left in nineteen, eighty-two fed up with Phil's constant reliance on heroin. The band even lost their manager to fed up with their bullshit reeling them in despite all this, they pulled their shit together enough to record another album, thunder and lightning, which would be their last studio album..

"Oh I mean taking heroin is an safe, no or smarts, so. And he wasn't doing it smartly either. He was using dirty needles. Yeah, because I also feel like back then. We didn't like understand. Yeah, the correlation, yeah, dirty needles and Hep C.. Yeah, like maybe if somebody shoves that needle into their vein, you shouldn't just rip it out of their hands and shove it into. Your vein might not want to do that kind of gross. Yeah, so histon in the hospital end up ended up costing the band tour opening for Rainbow. which whatever. I'm just kidding. Well Rainbow at that point at that point was he was? Ritchie blackmore and Ronnie James Dio. Oh, I know. I! was just trying to make them feel better, actually K. like. Rainbow guys. It's fine. You guys are being green bow, who bounce right back. It's like a rainbow in the dark. My cat, it all makes sense. He spent a couple months in a Manchester hotel, recovering mid nineteen, seventy six. The downtime allowed Phil to write most of the songs that would appear on thin lizzy next album, johnny the Fox. After this release from the hospital, the ban went into the studio with John, alcock. Also produced jailbreak. Can't go home soda. Guys. Tension between the band members was rampant during the recording sessions, especially between Phil and Guitarist Brian Robertson Ryan come on other Brian Jesus everyone argued about the direction of the band and other Brian in particular was miffed when he wasn't credited with Co writing some songs. Okay, which is understandable legit the tension didn't stop there hard partying ways, however, if anything, it made it worse, Oh yeah like if you have to hang out with somebody that you're having beef with you know what's going to make that easier dog soon. After finding massive success around the world with jailbreak, Phil became a well-known hard partying rockstar. He could out party out. Drink out drug in out. Woman is anyone Oh, it was all downhill. Fell come on. For you, we were all rooting for you I. We have never talked to a guy like. Right like I, really was like all right. He's got the drugs, but he treated women. Great raw crap God. Damn it! His sexual exploits were well documented even when he was in relationships whether it was drugs, alcohol, or just his personality, he was extremely possessive of his girlfriend's. Even as he fucked his way around the world while they waited for him at home. I can't with that Shit Yeah. Fuck Yourself. He even got married in nineteen eighty. Two the mother of two children okay and continued to just fuck around on her, but it's fine because I'm a rock Straw. Is it though I? Don't think it is not. As long as if it's not an agreement between the of you that that is okay, right? It's not okay. Here's the thing if you're going to say I get to cheat then that person gets the she to. Like then you just have an open relationship. Yes, as should don't work, if only WANNA use gets to have your knickers in a twist. Nickerson a twisty. twisty. She got with steed, my knickers Ron. "He didn't know it was crawlers well. Now you know. because. I didn't drink for a week. You're making up for last time, so shit's been crazily ironed. Now now that it's out of the way, let's let's talk about thin, lizzy. Let's do it then, lizzy. You was one of those bands that you couldn't take your eyes off of. There's a lot of reasons for that. The biggest of which was the dynamism of the band's lead, Singer and bassist Phil Line Fuck you bases. There's no question that he was the very first Black Irishman to achieve commercial success in the world of music. There's also no question that his extraordinary life ended tragically and way too soon. I don't like this. We really couldn't have picked a better band to talk about this week. Considering the media coverage as of late. George Floyd, Brianna Taylor Ahmad Aubrey, Tony mcdade, and so many more people of color became victims of white violence in the last couple of weeks, although fills eventual death was not directly at the hands of white people. It still was caused by an epidemic. That disproportionately affects far more people of color than white people, and that is drug abuse. Damn it. We can officially say day zero. No heroin heroin. Sorry okay calendars all right. Thin lizzy started in. Dublin I all Ireland in Nineteen, sixty nine, it was one of those bands that had a revolving door of guitarist, but Phil Lineup and Drummer Brian Downey were the pillars held the band up throughout its tenure. Brian was born in Dublin on January, twenty, seventh, nineteen, fifty one and grew up in the suburb of Kremlin. Okay, which sounds so Russian. It's probably pronounced, completely different Kremlin something like that. Kremlin. He was heavily influenced by jazz as a child. And when he started playing drums, that jazz influence could be easily distinguished. He grew up in a musical household with a father that played in an Irish pipe band. It was his father, that introduced him to jazz in his favorite rock bands, the rolling stones, the Kinks, and of course the Beatles of course of Co everyone everyone loved the Beatles. Vehicles Brian took his love of playing drums with him throughout school, joining various bands with his peers lake. The liffey beats liffey beats. I think that's how you say it, yeah. That sounds right. Yeah and MoD CONCAVE DWELLERS I don't know that sounds I'm looking some would call a band. Things were weird in the sixties in Dublin. I feel like I. Think things are still weird doppler. I'M GONNA. Say Yeah, things are still weird. That's what keeps Dublin interesting true. But once he met Phil, line at Everything Changed Phil had a much different, much more unconventional childhood than Brian. He was born Philip. Paris Line on August Twentieth Nineteen, forty, nine, in West, Bromwich England. His mother Philomena line. It was an eighteen year old white woman from Dublin Ireland's and his father's see so Paris was a black man from Guyana `wow! The Scuds Walter Cultural F. C Sola Philomina had met in Birmingham in Nineteen forty-nine, and we're only in a relationship for a few months. Remember the word for it, but just the bad times. Yeah, like complete disillusionment disenfranchisement. Yes, only twenty. You know the fact that this is all still happening. Yeah, don't worry about that and if. We're still going to highlight beers that we really care about. Be Thinker, really good or see actually are thematic. 'cause. We're not going to give it up entirely. It's just we're not gonNA. Bust are fucking acids. We don't really like to find a beer that we're not gonna like were don't really want to drink. It's a stretch at pets. That is a stretch at best fitting category exactly so if we find one that is clearly a reference to a musician we're talking about your will drink it otherwise. We just going to drink. Yeah, this week. I'm drinking rare form I'm drinking practically magic. When favorites I would say you know then lizzy could be practically imagined is true because that, too? Hot You also have another one called smoke on the pills, which is clearly a reference to smoke on the water. Yeah, by deep purple has nothing to do with this. They do one hundred percent. "You know we. We plan our episodes out like a month month and a half in advance. We're good little Dube's and try to have an idea of what we're gonNA. Talk about you know in a month. Yeah because mart. Our podcast takes a lot of planning. It does takes planning, and we are well aware that due to current events being the hot garbage dumpster fire that they are many people that we know many of our podcast. Friends are doing a podcast blackout and we heavily consider doing that as well. Yes, because I think that's a great idea. We fully support all of our friends and anybody who's doing it i. think that's Great. Yes, however, yeah. We had this. This episode planned out for at least month month and a half now and the person that is in the forefront of this whole story is a very progressive black man. who is extremely underrated in rock music and is often forgotten about. So it made more sense to us to tell his story. Tell his band story. because. Everybody needs to know his story. Yeah, I. Agree. I think that's important. I think just as important as the silence you can also. Celebrate. Lives Yeah I think to tell a story. That's important. Yeah, I think his is. It's I guess not as typical of story typical a life as a lot of people of color experience in America of course his takes place in Ireland in the sixties and seventies eighties, but they're still elements of racism. There's still elements of doubt in there still things that affected him in his life. That affect a lot of people of color still. I do believe I. Correct me if I'm wrong, but and there is a lot of working class. Yes, anger, and they from what I understand. This ban represents a lot of that. Sentimentality yeah, so. We decided to tell the story of thin lizzy. Yes, anyway, because thin lizzy is, it's frontman Phil. Line, it and he needs the respect that he deserves yet i. think it's good to bring more attention to their story, because even in the world of music and rock. Specifically you hear thin. lizzy name a lot, but. I don't know their story. Yeah, you may have heard. The boys are back in town, but do you know any of their other stuff? Did you know that they had lake nine studio albums and their bangers? Yeah, dubs. Yeah, and jailbreak is their song to jailbreak is a thin lizzy song every time I hear it right. "These carefree Halcyon days of late. Teenage years would be formative to creating the musician we now know is tricky while squatting with some friends who were members of a low key sound system. He told them to do some wraps off the cuff new skeptical at first but after a few verses many saw talent that was clearly lying dormant in so weird to me that people can just find this talent one day. It's like oh I'm just gonNA try wrapping right and they're really good at it. Yeah what's that like? I have nothing like that. That'd probably something just no-one said Ashley do this thing. And you're like doing your shit. I don't have enough fantastically great talents. That will allow me to use that as my career is what I'm trying to say. Also I don't think many people can do that as A. Yeah I wish I could again but this is the whole point of the story with tricky is. Just lock yeah. He's a lucky piece of Schick. He just ran with these people who are trying it out and he was sitting there and they said hey sing along to this and he did and it worked a chance for exposure came with childhood friend. Miles Johnson Aka deejay Milo of the sound system group. The Wild Bunch. They had tricky. Come wrap with them at live shows and this is where he developed his very distinct spec saying style saying wreck sang. I'll expect SPEC saying like you know like the German. Yeah but it's singing yes. Brecht means to speak s brick. Spec sang speaking. This was not sort some sort of conscious choice either. This is where I get into our beer. Tricky softly sings spoken. Voice is a direct result of. How very shy. He is when performing usually closes his eyes and projects just enough to be heard but this would be something that we will still see being used by artists today. I mean think about it like a lot of indie. Pop is very softly sings spoken. Yeah so in. Now it's the new thing the the asm our thing is like be really close to Mike but be really really low. And some really calmly. Yeah Yeah and even I guess again better or quote unquote. Mumble rap is very much like that. That's just a dumb affectation well because they're all just really shy. No Yeah you're just fraternity for Shuki. It's like legit. It's an actual thing like I'm quite shah. I don't know how to sing much louder than this. That's my British choice. That was very good. You've been working on it and I have been working. Sit in the mirror and I'm like I'm British now. He not only adopted his style but also his name around this time to at one point while rapping with the group the fresh for a DJ called him tricky kid and it stuck eventually morphing into tricky. A big thing with tricky is. He's a bit of a loner. Uh-huh kind of comes and goes in and out very wafting into group Aloof. He's aloof fish in the sense that he was not always around. You know he'll do something with a group and he'll just go off and do his own thing or go to a new squad or go check out of band so pupil will be like. What's that tricky kid? Getting up to is tricky like a slang word for not always there or whatever I think Lucy like I think it's more of a slang for just like you know he's always getting into something not even necessarily trouble but like he's that kid. That just shows up. Gotcha here we all have that person who just like you'll be out and then just that person shows up in their in your group for the night but then you won't see them again for months. Yeah that's exactly who? Tricky is. All right just show up for a night and you have a great time and then you just won't see him again cool but that's just who. He is tricky was never considered to be a member of the wild bunch. More of a collaborator. That's due in part to his age. Making him just not really notice or care where he could go with them. He's still like nineteen twenty everyone else's more in their twenty s He's still kind of a kid. This create they created a few singles but tricky never join them in the studio. He was still being a bit of a drifter. Like I mentioned before. Just going from squat squat so that was another reason why he just never joined with a group 'cause he was always kind of doing his own thing. Yeah by the late eighties. The wild bunch dissolved when three of the members Robert Three D del Najah Grant Daddy G Marshall and Andrew Mushroom vowles formed. A new group called massive attack. Oh so massive attack or an offshoot of the wild bunch okay but also mushroom vowles Ideas last names vowels. Oh Hey maybe I'm saying okay. So so the members of massive attack our three D. Daddy G in mushroom are maybe mush. Mush is like but it started off as mushroom announce okay because they thought his mushroom val mushroom vowles was his name like there is a story behind that and we do not have enough time for it. Now there's actually no story behind it unfortunately someday maybe we'll do the massive attack story because I think they have some interesting. They seem interesting. Yeah maybe or maybe not for the right reasons and they've been around for a long fucking time as we see the early eighties. They will probably a year or so later. Three D and tricky ran into each other at pub and from their real. Friendship blossomed tricky. Yeah they're fans tricky was asked to come on board to work with massive attack at the time he still wasn't seeing music's anything more than more than a hobby so they worked out to where he would get paid out for being a musician with the group not an actual member okay so he was still working with them doing a lot with them but he wasn't a full-fledged member he wouldn't be listed as a member of massive attack right but he was credited to helping them with some songs. Okay here's a little fun side no So they're manager is Cameron McVey. And he is the husband to Neneh Cherry. Oh and she's significantly helped to back their albums they gave gave the money. She guessed it on a few other trash. This is probably around the same time. The Buffalo stance blew up. It is yeah yes so Neneh Cherry had a big hand and all this will no shit for her right good for good for them. Yes get good for everybody invoked in the situation yeah honestly. Y'All are lucky tricky. We contribute to three tracks on their debut. Lp Blue Lines most notably was daydreaming. The first single off the record while only hit number eighty one in the UK charts. It was still enough to help. Get them some real notoriety just to give you guys idea there. Sound all play.

"Yep Okay. Meanwhile maxine was a bit of a poet. Something tricky wouldn't discover until he was older. No the reason this information was not common knowledge to him was because maxine had committed suicide when just four years old. Oh that's awful. And he says the first member he can recall is seeing her in her coffin. Oh Fuck Yeah. It wouldn't be a stretch to say this will affect his outlook for the rest of his life and attributes to the dark themes a lot of his music takes on. I would save one of your earliest memories is seeing your mom in a coffin during her funeral. Yes that would affect you for the rest of your life. I'm pretty sure anyone who does know. Tricky is music can hear that and say that explains a lot now a lot. I always thought there is a bit of darkness to him and his music. Oh even though ELECTRICA is supposed to be. You know something you can dance to I always associated him with portishead. Yeah Oh yeah because said has this melancholy sound and I feel the same way about Turkey's music. Yeah honestly I guess you could say like the big three is tricky massive attack points is aside or Porta. Shed portishead portishead. Yes yes. I'm really bad with pronunciations. I love Florida's dead though. They're fantastic. I have to say I haven't heard a ton of portishead. I've definitely heard more massive attack. I've heard far more portishead tack by the way. If you're like who are massive attack and portishead you know what just look up. The song teardrop. Yeah no it. Everyone knows it. Yeah that song that you're going to hear it and you're like it's that electronic song that everybody knows yes 'cause once you play it. Everyone's like oh of the song. His Father Roy left the scene not long after that. He didn't get along with along with maxine family. It was at the point where her uncle was threatening to kill him when he got out of prison. Wait the uncle was imprisoned. The uncle was in prison and he was like get out of prison. I'M GONNA fucking kill you pretty much. Jesus way what is Turkey's dad do so I think he was just one of those dads that was kind of lofty. I don't think he was a bad person. And he got along with them pretty okay. But after maxine died a lot of them blamed him for her death. Okay sounds like true? Crime series stirring up the you know. He didn't care enough but he actually found her so great and then also intricacies book. He does talk about reasons why his mother might have killed herself because she was a very bright happy person. It's always about heavy people to do it but yeah. She apparently was diagnosed with epilepsy. Okay and it was hard. There was tricky and he had a younger sister and he thinks that it was very hard on her to have two kids that she could barely take care of because she had fucking epilepsy. Yeah so I think it was a matter of get kind of spiraling into this. You're better off without me. Kind of thing. Yeah and you're going to discover as I go throughout the story. Mental illness does run through. Turkey's DNA got his family tree for sure After his mother's death tricky went to live with his grandmother. He has a large family and many of them engage in some sort of criminal behavior. Oh from theft to actual murder his actual. She will murder murder murder. I stabbed a man killed him actual murder. I've been a meeting to talk to you about that about your actual murder might WanNa get. Outta here for a while. Kill tried in this kind of fire I killed a guy with a Trident. Talk to you about your actual. His uncle's have especially run the gamut of crime than most of the stories in the book that he tells are crazy. Uncles man. Crazy on fucking crazy oglala. Uncle uncle uncle and they're all just committing cry uncle and cry. You want them to make a movie called uncles on the run on goes on the run. Get outta here wings stupid. Mullets get out of here. Where are you fantastic? Mullets tricky is from an area of Bristol called Knowle West a town with a large population of lower income working class families. That kind of scene crime was a way of life for most living there and it was almost inevitable that one should expect to spend some time in prison if you grew up in old west now. Tricky isn't an aggressive type of person so the likelihood of him getting into violence was pretty low but he was still a product of his environment when he was a teenager. He was getting into trouble with the police for truancy in loitering late at night. Just kind of petty. Little things is truancy not going to school. You're gonNA say something so much worse than like going to school. I mean it's just like skipping school. If like a police officer sees you at ten thirty in the morning on a Thursday when there's clearly schools like hey so what the fuck are you doing name? I thought I told you what because this is my United Kingdom of whatever it is his United Kingdom or whatever he was Liam Lynch in the shootout no less he was well then it progressed into breaking and entering he started to go from like these petty little things to be a little. Bit Harder Yeah. He ran with a crowd that would be on the lookout for any homes where no one was there. And then they would rob the place but like occupied. Yeah yeah yeah like someone vacation they would notice all the lights are off and it's six o'clock at night and they're like nobody's home right now. Cool we should still from them all right. Let's do that. I think that's how you still don't know. So he wasn't murdering people he was doing actual murder. He resigned doing actual. Who's doing actual robbing not actual murder? But what landed him behind bars? Some small skill money loitering or money laundering. Oh so he was alone shirk to no not even a loan shark. He and his friends would forge fifty quid notes and then use them at convenience stores so they could get the change. Yeah that's this was before they had those color changing pens Gotcha like the seventies eighties. Tricky wasn't one hundred percent. Sure exactly what went down. But it seems to him that his friend got caught in snitched on him as well. Oh thanks Frendo. Snitch is get stitches. Do except tricky. When do that this landed him two months in the youth wing of the prison and seeing how he was only seventeen at the time? Yeah that makes sense. Yeah even though. It sounds like a pretty short sentence. It was enough to get tricky scared straight ensuring he would not involve himself in the criminal life again could yeah like want one of the few people that scared straight worked for. So where was this misfit kid to turn to for self expression an outlet from day to day life where to go music of course? Oh Yup that's how you go. Kids just do music. Yeah do the music. Don't do. Don't forget fifty quid notes. You're going to get caught so quick or actual murder. Just play music. Mortar people with your sweet sounds on your guitar. 'cause that's not actual murder that's just music growing up. Tricky listen to a lot of reggae and Billie Holiday Inn Marvin Gaye and all that like when he would visit his dad then he was in his mid teens and he slowly gravitated to prince buster as well as we bands like the four skins. That's a great name man. Yeah you can you some of you might see where I'm going with this or his musical tastes for gravitating to because we all have that band right. The ban we discover and it changes everything. It gets deep in our core. We carry that with us for the rest of our lives. I'll I'm so I'm so intrigued. And for tricky. Who is it? That band was the specials. Oh okay I figured you would make some kind of Scott comment Scott. I don't know enough about the specials to make fun of them but like Scott but Scott. I WON'T DAN BY SKOP. You'll skank by sky will always buy the thing about the specials is that they were one of the first bands that he was exposed to where he saw people of. Color and whites playing together. That is one thing. I do have to commend Scott for the really transcended the racial barrier when it came to inclusion. Yeah they don't give a fuck. Yeah it's like if you can play a fucking instrument then yeah you're going to be in this band. I don't even know what you play. You know what you don't even have to play if you ask on stage and hyper Chad. Eight men that's I see. Defense Scott Donna hype his lost on me but pick your pick it up. Pick it up again to the row. We're picking up a sky but you can pick up change in a mosh pit to know you can almost what's going on. You're taking your life in your hands. Dropped all them quarters in your pocket. Does I say goodbye. Somebody else got that Shit but if you drop all those coins and a Skop it they're going to pick them up remake. Oh you draft all these. You have change of course. Sky's the perfect music for being. Excuse me stuff nicest Scoppetta my life. I mean pits and Scott. Scott Peterson escaped rented a circle. This is wonderful that's hilarious. It's wonderful so sweet it is. We like it but like yeah wake were saying this whole breaking down of any racial barriers. Eight really spoke to tricky. Because it's very much what is life is no less is predominantly white right but oh it is. It is okay yes. It's still lower class but only white lower class but then he would visit his father in Saint Paul's and it was predominantly black lower class. Either way yellow poor okay. What field was this close to Bristol? Okay this is all in England and don't forget his family's mixed as well so there was this element of never really knowing where he belonged. He would be stopped by the police for being black but then called out by his black friends for acting to weigh in so he just never knew my lifelong identity crisis. Yeah and here's the thing shouldn't fuck it matter. Yeah he's a fucking person. Yeah more or less story. Reese doesn't fucking matter. Yeah you're fucking person. Thank you for coming in my tedtalk. So needless to say seeing these guys come together on stage spoke to tricky on a whole new level. But not just that what they were singing about getting chased on the street. Stay OUT LATE. At clubs. Were exactly the types of activities that he was getting up to. At the time I listened more and more tricky began to feel that this was something he could do to not Scott in particular but have some sort of involvement in creating music. These guys were self taught and just living their passion. So why couldn't he? Yeah so going. To shows became life for tricky. He and a friend began squatting in different locations selling weed to make enough cash for train or a bus to get to the next place in check out another group..

"Hey Yeah this speech is my recital. I think it's very vital to arrive. That's right on time. It's tricky is the town it's tricky to rock overrun to Rutta around. That's right on time. It's Okay. It's tricky tricky. We're not talking about Randy. And now we are at all like this has nothing to do with Rod DMC. This is the SOG tricky. It's just because we probably both have this song stuck in her head for the last week. What do you think yes? I have had this song stuck in my head a lot because it's an earworm. It is an earworm of song but also I kind of WanNa learn all the lyrics so we can do that Kariuki now. Oh yeah no I mean I already. I got him so I mean there on screen so yeah but I don't know like the cadence of Oh. Yeah Yeah now listen to it all week. We'll be good for Kariuki. I say this is a. This is a solid karaoke hit. Yeah and we're not talking about it not at all. Let's just snip. That right in the bud. Yeah no doing it not going to happen. Welcome candy where we don't talk about run DMC not today not yet not yet. Not Today eventually. Oh Yeah we'll get there. They'll get the rock turned rock trained Freeman Rock treatment. No free referring to something. I would say we're not. Words are great for us. I am Maggie and I'm taken to drink sorry I'm Ashley and we're hosts and we are bringing you sweet treats from the world's music every week. Yeah and this week we're going obscure I I don't WanNa see obscure but I guess obscure kind of but also he's been around for a very long time. He is insanely influential. And you probably don't even know who he is. Yeah which is unfortunate again. I think we're just tapping into more for black history month of these artists that are super important to the world of music and very influential. And you just don't know. Oh my God like rap. Wouldn't be what it is today. If it wasn't for this artist ELECTRONICA wouldn't be what it is today. If it was not better or worse it depends on how you look at it. Yeah yeah either way either way is what it is you can definitely think this dude for it. Yeah Yeah today. We are talking about the musical artist. Tricky hence the song in the beginning gas and heads maybe some confusion maybe some have when they see the title of this. Are they just going to spend an hour and a half talking about the song? Turkey we probably could but no. I feel like there's not that much set song. It's just a fucking jam. Yeah but yes so. We are talking about this artist. Tricky you might be wondering who he is for some of you. If I say massive attack maybe that will jog something up for you. He was definitely heavily involved in the beginnings of band. That group also another incredibly influential band. That only really gets talked about in vary like obscure listrik holes and Shit like that. Yeah and then people will remain at our heard from fi but then again a lot of our UK and listeners and European listeners are probably hearing us say tricky and massive attack thinking. Yeah no I know who that is. I'm not an idiot but Americans are dumb they already it's and they don't really look into this show. We don't get as much music as we should over here. Yeah we get a lot of garbage hold on a garbage hold on a boat rock still still on my part rock over here for some reason he still really into venture seven belts so seven. Yeah my favorite band. There's so memorable terrible guys. Seven folderol good bad. You're such a hot topic band but LENA LATE. Two thousands hot topic bands like the the bad the real bad topic hot topic years. Yeah Yeah we talk about that topic here. When hot topic discovered the nightmare before Christmas? That's when everything just went fucking downhill and years after the movie comes out there like Hey Jamie see this week makes so much money off of this. We've really straight off topic hot topic. We paid hot right about hot topic. Yeah please talk about tricky because fuck hot topic and we should definitely talk about the beer drinker. Hit US harder than we thought. I don't know actually four percent. It's hitting me harder than I thought it would. I had half an a snickers ice cream bar before we started drinking breakfast for you know that was lunch. Okay so this week. We are drinking from single cut boo. Smith's Boozman looseness. There would be a great like just a really great title for a brewery. That does all Halloween themed boost Smith. Spoo- Smith Saul. Yeah let's you know what we're done guys neck podcast where we're going to start a buoy. Don't you take that idea? That's all the copyrights we also you so fast. Always this is recorded. We HAVE PROOF. We have proof. You stole it from US. Anyway. We're drinking. Shyness is nice which is a tart. It's fine it's honestly like most single cut assign stuff we've had. It's just fine. This is fine. It's not particularly tart but it's not overwhelmingly. Ip a what we did have a very inland discussion before according about what it really tastes like and it really reminiscent of a flavor of when you use half of the frozen concentrate can you don't use the full can because you're trying to save money which they use the same amount of water in which is really watered down or feel like probably a lot of the younger folk that listen to us probably don't know what the concentrate is. They make frozen concentrate anymore. I don't really see it very much at all. I remember going to the grocery store and there are cases upon cases a fruit. Concentrate that you would make Wella's Walsh's was the jam it was so I'm no get out. Get out get the fuck out of here no it. That was the cheap way to make orange juice juice as you got the concentrating dollars. Fifty cents fifty cents a dollar. Whatever for a little can of frozen concentrate our for four. I think there are like twenty five cents. There were only ones you guys know. Do you remember he wants to go? Get the like the little clear powders. Really Twenty ten cents. I think yeah they were like ten cents lower lake ten for a dollar usually Gillis. Wow we're not. We're not interesting to stay on. This tastes like very watered-down Orange juice concentrate. Yes you would get frozen in a tube. Yes I had to kind of stretch with this one. Like as far as building with it but China's nice you will soon discover that due to tricky shyness as a person it helped him cultivate the artists. He became yeah. I kind of feel like we're this cut. We're getting into some deep cuts with our beer choices. I mean arguably that's a single cut does anyway in before I really get into it. I would like to cite my source. Most of everything. I'm giving you guys I found. Actually it's nice. Tricky is very interview. -able he likes to talk so it was easy to find interviews but also. I read his biography. Hell is round the corner and this was co written with Andrew. Perry so he did have a little help. But I'm really want to highly suggest this biography to anyone. Listening Eighty is really interesting. He's a great writer He writes like he's talking to you. Which is something I enjoy. He has a crazy interesting story and there are some things that I wanted to get into. But I just didn't have the time so please pick up this book if you ever see it yet I really WanNa read it. Yeah there's some really good stories their stuff with David Bowie in there that I wasn't able to so that could be more stories for episode on Weird Shit David Bowie did our eventual spinoff podcast. Weird Shit though. We did basically yeah. We basically his life. Yeah but yeah he Because you know. British artists recognize Yeah it helps. I guess now is the time I'm going to get into the story of two Ricki Hall Radi before I do get started though on the life of tricky. I want to give a little background into the musical genre known as trip hop because really he's one of the fathers of the Stranraer. Please tell me more. I feel like you don't tell me more trip hop is not easy to describe. I just tried to do it the other night. And it's very hard it is it is a blending of hip hop and Electronica in hints of Jazz are Embi House soul psychedelic kind of a little bit of everything. There is a very experimental element to it with in its music as well as the visuals overall all experimental. It's style of music that maybe not everyone is familiar with but its influence reaches throughout most genres of all the music. We hear today after this episode. If you go back and listen to artists like gorillas back Madonna Bjork radiohead Queens. The Stone Age Janet Jackson even the Flaming Lips. Oh yeah our favorite favorite but you can hear hints of trip hop in. Yeah absolutely them. I don't listen to electronic so maybe I'm far off base here but I feel like trip hop is the most easily digestible of the sub genres. I'll say in house can be most commercialized yet. And they're the ones that are most commercialized. That artists like Madonna and stuff like that will seek out people that have experienced in those genres. Yeah and bring them in and put that kind of influence into their music so that the masses will hear it. All of those musicians can thank the trip. Hop Movement of the Ninety S for pushing the envelope of sound and tricky was at the forefront. Whether or not he meant to be this isn't what I would call a classic underdog story. It may just be a story of being incredibly lucky throughout your life and tricky is actually the first to admit that but luck are not his ingenuity. Artistry cannot be denied. Tricky was born Adrian. Nicholas Matthews Thaws on January twenty seventh nineteen sixty eight. That's such a generic name but like so many with so many names right age. I don't know Adrian's Kinda Fun. That's a good name Adrian. He is the son of Roy. Thaws a Jamaican man and maxine Quaye. Who was Anglo Guyanese? So her family mixed Guyanese in English British. I should Throughout his childhood being mixed rate race would play a big part in Turkey becoming who he is today while wouldn't be inclined to say either. His parents had a musical influence on him. They both had some artistry in their backgrounds. Roy worked on the studio seventeen sound system with his father is one of the best known in England at the time and nicknamed Tarzan. The.

"He also got into a bickering match with Bono over a line line that they were fighting over to that. But one fucking Bano line do do. What's one from Christmas for Bono's lake at least it's them instead of you? Oh I don't know who or something like that in like just in the Singaporean and wanted to keep it a big fight over that he also has a tendency to piss off the strokes an emmy and even when after Frankie at one point don't give a fucking shit about what the strokes feel like jokes from me on me. Don't fuck this strokes who cares. Strokes is care. I don't care if the strokes care this stroke my Dick. I don't know what their names about. I don't know it's clear. All of these moments of shade probably happened when he was really messed up on coke and booze but the damage was done. It's really hard to repair your image edge after you've burnt that many bridges. Yeah even if we don't care about them they care about themselves to watch and of course many thinks thinks they're joke but nothing could be further from the truth. Their music and visuals come from a place of love and admiration for the craft. And they're not here to take themselves overly Lee Serious Li like other musicians. Yeah and I think that's the thing is that they don't mind taking the pissing themselves. They have fun. That's part of their charm but a lot of people like but like you don't take yourself seriously in there like we do because we know how to play on fucking instrument we know how to make good music. Yeah we can you you know. Take the PISS and have fun and we don't have to wear the world's most serious lyrics and move bassus. They've said many times there is humor in rock and roll so so considering how few bands seem to be enjoying themselves. Because let's think about it. How many bands released seem to be having that much fun playing rock and roll? Perhaps there's just a lack of real rock in this day and age could be it would just be nice in the Sea of bloated old rockstars. Who would rather forget lyrics than take a break or planned but rock bros.? Taken the stage if we could celebrate more bands like the darkness who are truly talented musicians here to have a good time. I'm in bringing us all along for the ride. That would be phenomenal. Yeah here for that. I WanNa ride the roller coaster. Sure I am. I'm here for it I want it. I want more darkness. Give it to me. I want more fun I have so I realized I have been listening to rock absolutely because no fun anymore. Yeah exactly why listen to it. It's also very serious. Seems Cords outling voice unless testicle list Ecoles Let's charts More slump and falsetto and falsetto and on SPANDEX. Yes era guys get get on it and ladies everyone get on it if you feel like maybe there's more to this band than what we covered. You're probably probably right again. This was a hard band of research. Yeah because wasn't there. Didn't Dan have a pretty serious bout of Anorexia. I didn't WanNa tell too hugh much that I didn't have solid info on. You know what I mean like. I've heard about that but I'm not sure what the I'm not sure what the whole story is behind that. Yeah because again and it's just so hard to research yeah. I remember reading an article shortly after permission to land. Actually know is probably a couple of years after permission to land came out. The Dan was talking about how he Got Anorexia Anorexia because of a lot of the pressures. Yeah he was dealing with with their huge fame after I believe in love blew up on you know. He felt like you know He. This was his way of having having control over something a career that was kind of going out of control especially with Justin and his drug and alcohol issues and all that stuff so yeah yeah. Yeah there's definitely way more to the story. It's a little hard to research it is. It's it's a big. It's and maybe I easily easily miss things I know I did So few no more of the story or if you know where to find those articles you can please send them to us. We'll post them on our social media and four shore and something else to keep an eye out for is a documentary. That is years in the making. I'm very excited about this. And I wanted to happen really bad now. I wanted to wait for it but I don't know when it's actually a group of Independent. Filmmakers began following them around as the toured and recorded since twenty. Fifteen the tons of footage from the recording SPEC- secreted in Ireland to personal interviews with each band. Member Justin discusses trying to be a dancer dancer but injuring himself. Frankie talks about how. He's the weird uncle the group so it seems to have been pushed back a year or two. It's slated for release this year. I don't know if it'll come out in my you could even just google goal like the darkness. Documentary is on Indie Gogo. You can read about it. They have a couple of clips up. Yeah thing is close. Yeah they seem pretty the hell bent on it coming out this year so definitely keep your eyes peeled. That's GonNa paint a really good picture that I don't know if I could convey as well. They're funny because they are definitely a band that goofs around and has a lot of fun but you can also tell his incredibly sincere in everything everything they do. Yeah and that's what makes me really enjoyed them to their music is phenomenal. And they are just decent human beings who are having the time of their lives and they. I want you to have the time of your life. Yeah I think that is The big thing about them. That endures is their level of sincerity. Yeah with their music yet. They're fucking goofy is faulk but you can tell that they're being serious about what they're putting out there. As far as music goes there music playing their music is really good. Watch them play. They are legit playing complicated stuff. Yeah so I don't know why why you can't take that seriously but here we are. You can be funny and make good music at the same time. Yeah and maybe we should all learn to lighten up a little bit. Yeah we're we're all tense right now. Darkness does it Devin Townsend. Does it all these people have very great. Andrew W K does it they have great sense of humor and they make really good fucking music so like how fun was yourself. Yes all sit back. have good time yourselves. I agree yes we. "We back no. Hey back story of the darkness so they did it holy pulls it off cool. The darkness is a huge success. Going from their small yet. Fanatical fan base in England to getting radio. Play all over the world in touring with big. Names like Metallica tour And headlining the Carling Festival in two thousand four. Wow they're a big deal now. They were a big deal kind of a big deal now they won tons of awards in the UK like best rock album for the Karang arm. Sorry Karang awards yes an exclamation point. I'm sorry it's Karang has woes mows. The Brit awards permission to land is still held high in regards. Today it is so good it is quite good listen to it. It's fucking concerned really good party. Rock album super is landing still on many greatest albums lists from various publications even today as it should buzzfeed one hundred greatest party rock sees number ten will surprise you. We right list ICAL UH-HUH. I JUST WANNA realistic. Oh about testicles. Testicle logistical number ten testicles for nine testicles pulls number eight Scott a surprise you BALZAC yacht. We can totally rape punts. He eat every could high hampers. Hip buzzfeed Atta seriously ad- ca- Doley fucking great for you. Well guys. The story is the same. Same touring is a lot. It's even harder when you start working on your follow up album. It's probably even harder. When you're fucking touring with your brother either way you kind of grew up with the student you know Marocco get sick of them? I don't know for the darkness. I think it's important to add in the. They were feeling a lot of pressure to match the success of their debut album. Of course. Of course I mean come on. Sophomore efforts are really as good. It is the first like if your first albums really good. Your Sophomore is not going to be as good. It's just not. Yeah and that's fine. I never expect your sophomore effort to be good guys. I never expect season to to be good I never expect the second in Psalm. Installment of a book or movie series to be good because usually people are under way too much pressure at that point so if it gets big everybody Kinda fucks it up. Yeah and it's okay. That's when you should fuck it up because we're expecting you to fuck it up. All of this seeped. It's its way into the band's personal lives. Tensions were high and arguing was commonplace at this point. By this time Justin and his girlfriend slash manager sue head split up and he was not handling it. Well Oh he said he got a Prince Albert piercing because he wanted to get the most painful piercing because he didn't like himself at the time. Yeah also not a useful piercing. It's not it doesn't do anything for you. It does not. It doesn't do anything for anybody. Well Kim well just thing at getting that that sounds terrible. He apparently does not happen anymore. He took it out good because it was a bag with these. Say It doesn't do anything for the lady. Yeah you really does it. I don't know about like doing it for the dude. Maybe it robs the prostate road. I don't know I don't have a prostate. Neither neither do I. So we're never GONNA also don't go near my butt so don't touch my butthole don't touch my butthole still the nearby autobiography. Don't touch my butthole. But this wasn't his only self destructive behavior. He also picked up a pretty hefty cocaine habit. Did I know I said No. Oh heroin but I didn't say no drugs. Yeah Eight said that he spent one hundred and fifty thousand pounds on cocaine in a year. Holy Fuck Fox. Is that a lot. Yeah that's probably two hundred thousand American rabidly more than that. I'm really bad at math. And that 'cause like this is like two thousand four hundred and five five and the pound. The pound was way better than the dollar at this point. Almost not quite double. It was way better because when I went to Ireland the the euro and the pound is better than the euro. Yeah this who turns out. The Bush administration was not great for our economy. Who would have thought I? I thought it was fucking fantastic. I know so many great things Maggie. Now I'm so glad we graduated during the Bush administration. That was great for us so happy about all these things mail. It just really helped us out in her career paths. Also he's not in endurable GRANDPA so fucking stop. Yeah Guys I. I know trump's a monster but like the Bush isn't great the that doesn't make Bush okay in comparison. That's a straw man. Argument doesn't work still. The boys went back back to the studio to work on this next album. were all the chips are on the table. So they brought in the big guns with producer. Roy Thomas Baker. Whose name may sound familiar because of his work with the band queen on their first five albums? Oh which are fucking bangers. Yeah however even bringing in such such a force couldn't stop the usual band drama from unfolding in addition to Justin's blatant drug and alcohol problems. Frankie ended up leaving his spot as bassist early in the recording process. Initially the claims were that it was an amicable split but later Frankie revealed to an Emmy magazine that he was pushed out by Justin ensue. He wasn't quite sure why or maybe he just wasn't saying why yet he didn't talk poorly about the band. In fact he was still very very excited about the sophomore release saying Hazel is is his favourite track quote. I defy anyone after a couple beverages to listen to. Hayes lies standing up and not get the Michael Frattini's the Michael Flatley flat lease. Michael Flatley River dance. Oh brings evidence and an intern kick your legs up. Frankie spot was taken over by their Guitar Tech Richey Edwards ads though most darkness songs are group efforts. He isn't credited with any of the writing. Nearly at this point he just took over. He's leaving doing duty. He's like their session basis. Kind of right now. Yeah Yeah One. Hundred percent despite costly delays. All the band issues. They did release one way ticket to hell and back in November. Two thousand five a really good song at least yeah. I mean like singles. Good yeah there's a couple of tracks tracks on that album. That are they're pretty it's worth. It's worth a listen through new. Grab a couple of Euroleague right before its release just in one a copy of it on Ebay for three hundred earn fifty pounds in order to track down. Whoever sold the digitally marked advance copy? We rent it from happening again. He bought it or he put it on their bought audit out. Somebody put out a digitally mark advance copy on Ebay. That's a big deal by you. Get their information yes he. He went on to buy it to figure out who did it so I never said who did it or at least any of thing that I went up. They never said who did it. They might be ridiculous. They might wear spandex but they have integrity. They do have entirety. Tim He might be high on cocaine. He Iraq so in it right now but he has dignity he really is kind of Deng kind of is like at this point. Yeah he's really does cocaine anywhere SPANDEX. e-eh e-eh the album debuted at number eleven but unfortunately fell to number thirty four. The following week it failed to reach the success of their debut. Byu And at this point has only reached platinum status. And I say only because permission to land is five times platinum. Oh Yeah not quite diamond. knoll critics were unimpressed with the hyper masculine themes the many references to cocaine. Because like you're saying what you know about all right. Yeah and Dick Jokes upon Dick Jokes raining throughout the songs today. I tried to hear the jokes. I mean at this point guys were over halfway through this episode. You know. We're here for the Dick Jokes. We've already made a Lotta Dick Jokes will make more. Let Paul Jokes today actually. Yeah I kind of Uboldo Day the toward for a time but sticking mostly to UK and Ireland in a few spots in Australia and Japan because Australia Japan fuck so does Canada. The fans the hype seemed to have burned out for the darkness Aban that fell about as quickly as they shot up by the second. Half of two thousand thousand six enough was enough for Justin. He decided to take control of his life again. He checked himself into Rehab as he was growing more concerned about his physical mental health throughout for all the cocaine and alcohol. You know who didn't do that. Was it Kurt. Cobaine Kirk Bain. Was Kurt Cobaine While he was in Rehab the best the best news source ever the British tabloids. Oh boy they're not terrible. No they began circulate rumors that the darkness was breaking up because he was in Rehab so clearly. The band's going to break clearly well it just so happened happen that after Justin got out of re have had the darkness broke up for once the British tabloids were Kinda right. Yeah Yeah there can be a lot of things attributed to this the stress of creating their last album that didn't do as well as they hoped the inner band turmoil the drugs and the overall rock and roll lifestyle years later Justin would say he just felt. The band stopped being creative And maybe there's something to attribute their to do whatever the reason the darkness was over. But that didn't mean anyone planned on leaving the music Biz. The remaining members gathered together to create something nothing new something called stone gods which lead more towards a mix of like hard rock and heavy metal I don't WanNa say say but rock because it is more talented than but rock but it's kind of a generic heavy metal. They're heavy rock sound elevated but rock talented talented but rock listenable bought raw There we go. That's rub. Ritchie moved up to lead vocals flesh rhythm guitar. And they brought in dance friend Toby Macfarlane to base they landed a spot supporting thin lizzy on a UK tour which is definitely yeah healthy pushing Garner them some popularity. Who was fronting thin lizzy? I don't know at the time I'm not one hundred percent. Sure I need to look into into that right now i. I'm sorry. I didn't do thin lizzy research because asshole. But they did love thin lizzy so the fact that they was an honor and a delight. Yeah Yeah Two thousand eight. They were headlining their own. UK Tours and they even released an EP. They're doing it. Yeah making a happen. I'M NOT GONNA go too deep into the story of the stone Gods. 'cause I just wasn't super interested but basically what you need to know is. They did receive much critical acclaim in many nominations for best new band when they came out though they never really gained a lot of commercial. Success the critic said they were great. The public was like refined. Yeah also during this time. Ed had to step down as drummer due to health. Complications caused by osteoporosis. What that sounds like his bones are disappearing? Yeah it's basically like a blood disease affecting his bones. yikes yeah yikes on bikes painful. The had a few replacements here and there and kept quite busy on the festival circuit but it seems they were all too aware that perhaps the stone gods peaked as a mediocre relate offs. Hard rock band probably weren't going to see a ton of success beyond now but they kept trying but I might be They kind of in my mind seemed like the UK equivalent of maybe like Velvet Revolver. Yeah like they've had a couple hits but but they were pretty generic and the fact that everybody in the band was extremely dynamic and talented but when they were together who's just flatlined. They were missing. Something Yeah Yeah and can you name a velvet revolver song. Yeah exactly you know Velvet Revolver. Yeah you remember that they had that song and it was Scott. Weiland in the guns and roses slash is off. Duff I think duffin slash Rashtra both in it slash slash agile. My God they should be superheroes called Delfin slash. Somebody make that comic. Meanwhile Justin kept busy with his own musical projects under the the name British whale he released a cover of the spark song. This town big enough for the both of US tours. That was fun however my favorite Solo a moment by Justin has to be when he joined up with British rb and soul singer Beverley Brown for the song. They don't make them like they used to which they submitted did for the bid to represent the U K in the world famous. Yiddish fucking. Love your overs. We've got made fun of so much for. Oh no naughty little French kids fuck understand that we don't have shit the America. We have absolutely nothing like everyone. American idol fuck that no it w and compare and like we don't even get yet eurovision broadcast on TV here. We don't get like we can.

It's the ball Scott both both sex green tour ball scream tour twenty twenty dreaming balls I'll think of angry underway to put that thank scream Paul scream ball sacks green sack scream who sack scream tour sack scream tour sacks. Green Ball got interesting dress up for this. If you'RE GONNA get your sack screamed at to Jonathan Davis you gotta put it on your best goes and get your fancy wallet. Chains means out. You better clean your chain to be honest. I don't like have that scuffed up chain at that concert also a decent wallet with a decent fold. Yeah don't don't wear wallet buy yourself a new one and get yours. Flames are real faded. On your wallet. You know what I'm talking about and get that really nice trenchcoat out of the closet. You're Nice Trench Co Nice trenchcoat. This was exactly what my prom date war for all my G. He fucking late full. Yeah Yeah Wow we went on a tangent. I Apologize O- 'cause I was talking about how Guitar Solos weren't a thing. Oh Yeah and then we got new medal. Okay wow that was awful. See what the odds due to us. The darkness is the one shining one of the few shining lights. Yeah see really is so. Here's this band. They're coming in singing great having great guitar. Solos America's not have it right now because we're just like love and our garbage music right so enter MTV the channel that used to be responsible for exposing us to music that you needed to see to the here and now is responsible for killing all of our brain cells and putting out content. That is just pointless. Useless and Doesn't help anybody walk. We all have our Jersey shore phase. It doesn't mean we're proud of it. I had my catfish fees I still watch. Catfish is like yeah. But you're right it's garbage. Melt your brain stop doing it. They got their hands on the ultra ridiculous music video for the song and toss it in airplay for the masses to eat it right away. We fucking did they did. If you haven't seen this video you can pause for a hot second and go watch it. Yeah it's grand tastic. But also my entire I'd say Sophomore Year of College. The all of my visuals all of my memories have this video playing in the background. Because if I was as in every time I went to the dining hall which was at least three times a day because you ate three meals three meals a day ago. This video was on the fucking TV. Like I five times of four. I left the dining hall. Oh you had a core school than I did. I never TV my dining hall and then a we had a bunch of them and they would just play MTV. You nope nope and then I go back to my dorm and have MTV you on and the fucking video played fifteen times before. I went class and then I would go somewhere while I'm walking on My Way to class to a cafe or something that had a TV on it. Fuck videos playing every single memory. I have my sophomore and probably my junior year has has I believe in a thing called love playing in the background. I was your college soundtrack. It really was man. New Poll Tesla. TV's yeah only really in the dining room that's fair. That's where they belongs well in the states we weren't gonNA understand that. The song is fun until we saw the band performing on a spaceship while all fighting a giant octopus monster all while wearing tight SPANDEX and glitter. Yes yes it's just about one of the most ridiculous videos you could ever watch and it's fantastic and even though this was the beginning of the digital special effects age they didn't actually use any CGI to create this video it was all motherfucking. Puppets was all practical effect. Yes everything the hired director Alex Smith who initially worked with them to create a low budget video video for the song and it just the boys running around a grocery store wreaking havoc. It was all fun complete with Justin singing into a sausage. It's all L. sausage acids to me. He was definitely not playing the insulted sauce. It wasn't he was just playing the sausage on land but they were later later given a larger budget and decided to really go big with the second attempt though they did keep the justin singing into the same exact sausage said Eh couple months got Kinda ripe I can imagine but do you know that part re singing into a sausage in the video no I don't yeah watch it real close I yeah I remember. I was recently watching it while researching this and it was excess sausage. When I found this is Mike? That's a sausage. I haven't seen it in a very long time. I'll I'll went out to. Yeah it's the same sausage in the original video. A big help on the creature creation was Jim and John Friedlander Dr. Jim is well known for his work with the doctor. Who Franchise where he made props and puppets for the show like the daleks Alex Taco? Neither do I but I do watch the great British breaking show where multiple people have tried to make Dolac from like cookies. Excuse as me biscuits sounds delicious. I'll eat it. He also worked on things like the the robot dog canine. He did a lot of work for the show. I believe that is pronounced robot. Oh I'm sorry. The robot dog Kanai story they had some real legitimacy going into this. They wanted their camp to be taken. Seriously God Damn it God give it. The song did amazing and shot the darkness into the mainstream. However it never quite hit number one losing out to black eyed peas? Where's the love my fucking God? Canny this was not eighteen. This was the era of the black black eyed peas omitted the fucking radio for like a good. What four years thousand? Dark time we don't. That was the dark ages history books if he knows the Dark Ages were the dark times. We don't talk about the dark times. Coming in second would would be a thing they got used to. As that year. They also released their holiday jam. Christmas time don't let the bells end of that song. That is pretty much. That and Christmas wrapping by the waitresses are like the two Christmas songs. I can ge- actually actively jam two. That's far they're both pretty solid hits. Yeah well it did not hit the UK number one Christmas songs slot that we've discussed codes that that's a thing in England you gotta get that coveted. UK number one Christmas Song. Yeah they all do Christmas songs. Don't do Christmas songs. And they're trying to reach number one the all do the TV shows do Christmas specials all of that. Oh Yeah No. Every day. Downton Abbey would like crawl out of their hibernation Russian holes and do a Christmas episode. Sherlock did the same thing. They fucking love Christmas over there. It's Dr Easy Stop Up. I mean I guess I don't know if you're from England and you think differently because you know differently. Please let us know. I mean granted. We do go fucking overboard for Christmas business here. But I feel like it's in a different way like a grocer way in fucking disgusting capitalist kind of way we do that. We don't celebrate so much as we WANNA fuck instead people over getting elmo toys shit gross well. The as great as the song is uh-huh did not hit the number one slot. It lost out to that God damn cover of mad world by Gary Jules a travesty like that fuck fuck. I hate that song. I'm GonNa Shit on fire. Well I guess this is a good place to take a break. Then so Ashley can go set things certifiers. I'll be right back all right. We'll be right right. Back is go get a beer and.

"Oh Oh that's adorable but yeah I bet you. He rates a mean. Jingle who boy he wrote Jingles for companies like Mars bars. HSBC the Anti Kia. You can find the Ikya one all you have to do is youtube. A piece of furniture called Bush lump what S. C. H. L. O. M.. He this all checks slump Schwab and it's very darkness. The AD is ridiculous. Yeah Yeah they're not his style style polished. You need something a lot there too. Cool now man. You gotta look if the swamp. It's it's very very very accurate. What you're thinking? I am very afraid of what would show up on google if I google slump actually like if you look up. I keep Sean Commercial. It's the first thing also. What if you put slump into the search bar on porn hub all right? Well I think we have to test how what I'm really looking forward to one. I'm a little scared of you're going to have to pick. Which one is which I think somebody? WHO's listening should push lump into the porn hub search bar? Just take screen shots. I just went screen shots. I WanNa know I was just. I don't want that On my browsing history. I I'll go going cognitive how we GONNA go to port of you always do for Porn corncob amateurs so sensibly Justin took his jingle earnings to help fund a debut album. He brought his jingles to the studio. He brought his studio and his jingles and now the darkness was ready to put in the work to make songs to grab the attention of industry types and get themselves that shiny coveted record deal just in how to manager for his jingle Biz named Jiggle busy. I didn't realize though it sounds ridiculous until I said it was like Jiggle. Biz Jangle Biz. I got into Gopez to sounds. Sounds fantastic like something. You'd find port hub okay. Somebody else needs yes. You put Jingle Biz. It's you aren't of search. I really wanted to how many people are doing these things by the way I hope everybody is I I do anyway. In her name was sue White House who was also for better or worse his girlfriend. I'm why is there a qualifier before that we mean like for better or worse. Yeah what does that mean. I don't know if it's smart to date your manager what I'm saying like I don't know if like your girlfriend and in your manager should be the same person I mean a grandma people but also no. Yeah I mean again though I don't I'm GonNa tell you right up front. I don't really know how exactly I can tell you. You know I will tell you how everything ends up. But I can't tell you the details of their relationship because then Justin is super secret of. Yeah so there's that but also don't shit where you eat. Don't shit where you eat. You know what just. Yeah don't yeah don't do it. The ban decided to take her on to handle their affairs as well as it helped. The CI already had industry connections to try to start to make a buzz in the industry about their music. I mean that helps to it. Does the only problem. No one cared about the darkness At best they had to labels Abel's slightly interested in signing them other than that people either assumed they were not a real band or we're just uninterested in what they're selling lame right. But this didn't stop the darkness from forging a path all their own their life shows became a thing of legend wearing tight. leotards doing leaps and jumps around the stage and generating high insane energy for days. These few things you could expect from one of their concerts no matter how big number how saw small you were going to get a big show. If you like still to this day you can probably expect that Yup this this helps them. Garner a fanatical fan base just on word of mouth alone so they hustled for a couple of years on the local pub circuit to gain more followers and to prove to the industry that they were for real and it was another rare case of hard work actually paying off. Finally they are getting more offers from legal contracts. Wchs Nick Raphael in an are for Sony Music. UK At the time was trying his best to get the darkness on their label but ultimately the boys went with Atlantic Atlantic records. And now it's two thousand three picture it. Oh I'm picturing K.. Two thousand three. It's time to release the album permission to land. Oh yeah the album came out with a single. Get Your hands off my woman which peaked at forty three in the charts parts but they still weren't gaining attention too far beyond their own circles which is crazy because not only does that song have the word motherfucker also has call. It also has granted con isn't such a bad word in the UK not but never played in the US. I believe they released it as a single in the US. Oh I don't think I don't know maybe they didn't. It just wasn't radio placing the didn't play on the radio. They definitely did not Um But yeah. They weren't even the. US didn't even know they existed. At this point. Yeah Yeah Yeah. That's their story hit. Some Queen esque similarities. He's a gain. Thanks to a woman named Joe. Wylie a deejay at radio one in Britain who is enamored with the span sound. She played their songs on the station. Asian when others just shrugged it off and this helped to give the band the push they needed. Let's pupils started saying who's this band. They're great I want to hear more of their the music. Yeah so there you go be friends with the radio. Dj then came their next single. And if you think you know what it is you don't miss it's the song growing yes. Growing on me is so good really cute a cute little love song about quote a sweet lady. Eighty woman that you will never fully fathom or understand but you love her so much at after a while it doesn't matter it is not about as TD's like like a lot of people assume. Yeah they did but I also got the impression that it was about. Somebody who like won't leave you the fuck alone and is really obsessed with you you and you're like Nah but then eventually you're like well I'm kinda desperate so I guess maybe he can play both ways. Yeah that could see both ways. But it's not about Colombia so or lice. Actually I believe people were saying it's about pubic lice. Yup yes this single did chart up better in in the UK than their last peaked at number eleven but it still paled in comparison to their ultimate rock song. That came out next. Yep I believe in a a thing called Love Yup now. They had released the song in two thousand two before they were signed to a label. So only a certain certain amount of copies were made which made it ineligible to be able to make it onto any charts when they released it on their debut. LP It was a total All surprise to the rest of the world still because nobody really hurt never even charted. Exactly I feel so weird when I say charted charted because it sounds like chartres chart it sounds like sharp. Sounds like you're saying sharded I'M GONNA say shorted forbid any. Even short short short even knew nobody even knew about the shopping on the charts parts of chartres then it went to the top of the charts top of the charts making it to the top of the word twelve year old boys. Yeah that's fine. Welcome can't boy. You may think you're listening to adult women you know we talk about poop. The joke's on a new mother fuckers. Of course this became an immediate hit in the UK but in order to get the attention of US Americans across the pond and we were gonNA need something to catch her is like a music video because while Justin's amazing falsetto range in the band's slamming Guitar Solos. Those were big in England. Not so much of the time for Americans because I was thinking about this too if you remember some kind of monster took out all of the Tar wrestles Guitar Solos. Were not a thing in the early off. It was threat any of the ADS. I think it was still pretty into a new metal title right. Yeah we still unfortunately balls deep at least cubes deep into the new medal. Yep there were tickle tickle in our ball all pupae for share still slipknot was still a screaming at everybody's ball sack I do believe slipknot still screaming at some ball socks they are. You're a long damn them.
