It is obvious that the physical tactics that were used one was to hold down his head. The other was to place a need between his shoulder blades, both of those tactics. Are trained exactly that way by the Rochester Police Department these officers had been told by their department in this situation, this is what you do. Right and we reported on this program the Rochester Police Department adapted those techniques into their mandatory training and their standard of best practice after those techniques were approved by the State Office that oversees law enforcement agencies The boss of that Mike Green former Monroe County district attorney. So those officers that night and again i. Again I'm I nobody to second guess but you and I all looked at that and said, why didn't they just put him in the COP car? Why didn't they put a blanket on him? Why don't they watching better as he's being restrained? Why is nobody Mutt? We got all that. We mostly of US agree on that. But but the point is the actual things that were done in that situation. How do you restrain a person under those circumstances? These officers did exactly what they were trained to do. Right, and if if that wasn't the right thing to do and we can have that discussion of course, and I can understand a lot of different viewpoints on that. But if that wasn't the right thing to do, that's not on the officers. That's on the city of Rochester and. and. Because the city of Rochester Police Department adapted those two restraint techniques after they were approved by the state of.

"Us understand where your heart was when you wrote this show, So my brother spent 20 years of his life in prison for a robbery. And that is something that has motivated me to do the work that I do to write the songs that I write, but the one case that really broke my heart to be frank. It was a case of Willie Simmons, who stole $9. In 1982 and has exhausted all of his appeals. And has pled and begged to be set free on has been denied the opportunity on dime, holding back tears. And I know I wasn't expecting to. But Um, A man just died in our city. We're all dealing with this news. He was killed by the our police department, The Rochester Police Department. S o. I'm just when we talk about time. I'm also thinking about how long we've been fighting for justice how long we've been fighting to be seen as full human beings. Andi. It's just not an emotion I could set aside for this interview because right now it feels very real and raw to me. We should say the man's name is Daniel prude and who died after a confrontation with police in March. His family is speaking out about that just now. And our station in Rochester has been reporting on that story. Ah, you are once a public defender. I gather Yes, I work for five years as a public defender, and once again that, you know it was inspired by my brother's story and just the experience of people in my neighborhood. How do you get from the courtroom to music? You know, I honestly don't think it's that different. I think in music you're telling a story and a good storyteller. A good songwriter is telling a story in a way where the audience empathizes or concede that set themselves in that person's shoes, And I think the good defense attorney does the same thing. I mean, but to be fair to yourself, I had never heard. For example, the Clarence Darrow Johnnie Cochran could sing particularly well. I understand your brothers out of prison. Yes, he is. He's doing awesome. He's a welder. He's a union man He is doing really well. How do you balance your life now between music, the law public policy. Help us understand how you're living. I mean things that things were different for everybody these days. Obviously, you know what Corona virus has been almost impossible to perform. I've had a few virtual performances here and there. I really have kind of thrown myself into the activist side. Working with our local black lives matter movement. I'm also working at our at our public defender's office now doing some diversity work in recruitment. And you know, I've been really focused on the racial justice work. But there's a big role for music in AA and popular movements. Isn't there? Absolutely, you know, I always tell people a person may not listen to NPR. Shame on them if they don't they mean that? No, no, We don't say that way. Say we hope you reflect and change your ways ahead. They they may not pick up a book. But everyone loves music, and people will go to concerts. I just did a show in the middle of no. Nowhere was a hybrid kind of virtual still, in front of a bunch of my whole my audience was alway and I talked to them about the criminal justice system and the experience of black folks in that system, and I don't know if they would have listened or even came. If they did not know there was gonna be music right if I was just election, right, So there's ability for musicians to speak to people who other folks may not be able to speak.

"Were outside i? Think there was a rifle salute and in there was the a cortege that went to the cemetery. And and so most of the people in the war memorial had left to go outside. I couldn't because I was doing a show and I'm tied to the the cord in the the broadcast equipment. And they're also in the center portion of the war memorial floor there at were a bunch of seats and there were sitting there I'm not good with numbers, but it could have been maybe a couple hundred primarily young women. Almost, all of them wearing some kind of simple black dress. They to me looked so young, they probably. Were in their twenties and thirties, and when the official party went out you know they had been told to stay inside. And they being young and obedient. did and there was this large screen in the war memorial which showed what was happening outdoors as the officers and the rifle salute and the you know committal of the remains to the vehicle for the the move out to the cemetery. But these I. You know I looked down I see these women all sitting there and they're all looking at that screen and there was in every face and in the physical body a posture in language of each one of them. There was an uncertainty and fear and the deal is that those ladies sitting there Were the wives of the Rochester Police Department there were there may have been some mennonite insane because obviously, there are husbands but I, I just saw this these rows and rows and rows of young young women who were young wives and you know. As I. saw that in that moment I just. Wondered, in my mind or realized if you will. What must it be like? To be here at the funeral. Of A friend and colleague of your husband who lost his life doing what your husband does every workday of of his life. And you know the thoughts. That would naturally associate with that fact or that would come to these young women. Are are obvious. But there they were this one or two hundred Anaheim many looking up watching many quite obviously with tears in their eyes all of them with A. An almost tense fear they literally physically were drawn together to each other many holding hands her with their arms around each other drawn may be by a common burden that they bore that burden of love and fear and maybe an. Associated with being the ones who wait at home and watch. And you know as this attack upon our police, all the various forms from the federal agents to the troopers in our state to the a city police, and of course, the deputies and others. we can. You know get a sense. And reminded of what they face by the video that ends up on the evening news quite obviously. But back home there are of people, wives, and husbands and children, and parents who who keep a an extra painful watch these days, and they are victims of our antipathy towards the police. They are the collateral damage of the political campaign against law enforcement in America. and they are also servants and sacrifice. Pfizer's of for society. They also our in our service. We. Also are in their debt. So anyway, I don't know but just thinking about. "Right and the deal is in you get to. It's it's an issue of of of choice. And unfortunately a micro culture has developed in the city of Rochester among some which embraces. This sort of behaviour now. That's what he put out yesterday. Here's what I what the Rochester police department put out About six fifteen or so Friday night now what woes Friday night? It was the Friday before A three day weekend holiday three day weekend right and six fifteen of course is after the television newscasts have commenced most people in Rochester Get their news on the radio. I mean the were part of a team effort the in terms of if you're counting noses most people more people in here news on on the radio okay but of course the TV news is where we get. You know a lot of people sit down and watch the news on TV It is more important than the newspaper in This Day and age and though a lot of people may not realize the important role that radio news place for them. If you ask most people where do you get your news? They probably say TV. It is a big deal right. The front page for Rochester is now channel. Whatever you choose to watch if you release something about six fifteen you've missed their big viewership newscasts and you dropped to in the middle. So that they don't even have the chance really To do it as a bulletin right. You may recall all the Brouhaha last week about the handcuffed ten-year-old well last Friday after the close of business Going into a three day holiday weekend. This was released Rochester. Police Chief Single Terry Statement on traffic stop among Monday. Teeth twenty twenty. I addressed the media relative to a video circulating on facebook involving traffic. Stop resulting in a child. Being handcuffed is indicated during my address. I directed an internal review as to whether the actions the officers involved were in accord with policies and procedures of the Rochester Police Department..

"Checchi jots down total of eight dollars, two cents Joyce's Brown charge book. Then judge says that everything seemed normal says all wanna said to him was I'm in a hurry, which wasn't unlike her who times of your mom told her to hurry back home that it was a normal thing for her to say store employees to male customers at third individuals standing outside the store all see wan to leave hillside carrying the bulky bag groceries to five fifteen five thirty pm had north on Connie heading towards home. The wall coaches were regulars at hillside and Joyce knew exactly how long it would take, you know, her daughter to walk to and from the store pick up groceries all that stuff. So in the amount of time has lapsed, and she's not back want send the other daughter read it at the store to see what the holdup was again fucking weird one dollars one dollars not here. So who do I send another daughter? Why can't what's going on with you? Why can't you? Go readers friend, twelve year old friends seen joins our. Seven forty seven two and a half hours since she lasting daughter the daughter and French can't find anybody can't find her. If I wanted to Joyce calls Rochester police department to report wanted missing. And then she heads to the deli herself to talk to the employs. Okay. So a couple of hours later. She's like, I don't know. Maybe I should go talk. Somebody about eight fifteen a massive search and rescue is underway. Police and neighbors researching backyards alleys railroad tracks the entire area to the tracks and avenue A while talking to the missing persons report police, this is this is what makes me very angry towards one his mom, and I know it's not her fault. I know I know let me rephrase that I know that she is not the person who does something to her daughter specifically, but check this shit out. Police told of a close encounter Wanda and a nine year old friend had two nights. Earlier two nights before she goes missing a strange man near some fucking railroad tracks block away around ten pm is literally hiding behind some bushes like a creep out of a shitty after school movie he jumps out of. Of the bushes. Chases them runs after net to run away. They don't see his face, but they do get a glimpse of shoes. And with some buckles on him to get this description to the police find he is a sex offender a known sex offenders in the area. Joe Joyce is asked by police if she was aware of this incident. She reluctantly said that she was so she knows that two nights. Earlier a known sex offender had been hiding in the bushes, and then chases her daughter, and then like her eleven year old ten year olds give me ten year old daughter. And then an incentive out the next day. What the fuck lady come on junior? What are you doing? Ten year old daughter gets yet chaste, man. Yep. So I don't know that this whole like this mother does remind me of like a character from like shameless like somebody re Frank Gallagher date. And again, I feel terrible for what happened to her daughter. Can't imagine losing child that way. But come on, man. Parents be parents one of the first things Lindsey, and I did and our current neighborhood before you moved in with check out the local police registries for known sex offenders there. There aren't any in our neighborhood like right around. But there are several few blocks away that I would like to beat unconscious. I'd like to throw their bodies in the perfect world in the back of my truck driving out to the woods and perform some wild west of vigilante Justice. I'm chuck. Yeah. Yeah. Time to die mother fuckers. Haven't dig some graves stripped naked, you showing some pictures of kids and whoever gets a boner gets dumped in the dirt. How about that little test? How about that little Rochard Boehner test? I just I do hate pedophile, man. Lows. The low to me humanities bottomfeeders grab an innocent child abuse them killing them some cases. And it's always open. I can't help these urges. I can't control. I maybe. Okay. I'm not saying you don't I get it. But what if I had the urge to kill people with euro JR. Maybe I can't control that. I can't actually because I don't I don't wanna go prison. I I've only going to be some kind of Dexter phone like he just get away with it..
