Alabama Governor signs bill making abortion criminal

"Alabama's governor signed into law, the most restrictive abortion Bill in the country, and your total ban on all abortions in the state under the new law. Doctors who perform abortions could face up to ninety nine years in prison. The reaction from democratic presidential candidates has been swift and fierce one of the laws, most vocal opponents is New York, Senator and twenty twenty presidential candidate Kirsten gillibrand. The tweeted that the abortion bands recently passed an Alabama and Georgia represent. And I'm quoting the greatest threat. Reproductive freedom in our lifetimes. Senator gillibrand is heading to Georgia tomorrow. But I you joins us here on three. Sixty Senator thanks for being with us. You wanna fight this. But what exactly can you do on the congressional level? I mean, this is solely decision for the courts at this point, isn't it? I think I can lead a movement, and a fight across this nation for women's reproductive freedom. This is an all out assault state after state over thirty. Nine efforts in this country to undermine women's reproductive freedoms, President Trump intends on overturning Roe v. Wade, he's made it clear, not only in his campaign, but as president, and that's what these Republican legislatures are doing across this country. This is something. We're gonna have to fight back on. And I will lead that fight Justice Cavanaugh during his confirmation hearing, he said that he would respect the quote important precedent of Roe v. Wade do you believe he'll do that? If and when this case and cases from other states make their way to the supreme court because that a lot of times, people who are waiting to get confirmed. Give a statement that kind of oblique it could be read in different ways. I think his statement was dishonest and disingenuous. But the American people are watching, and if he lied under oath in those hearings that's gonna be problematic. So I hope the American people and American women everywhere will hold this president accountable, and we'll protest these extreme. Decisions by legislatures and governors being signed into law there. Criminalizing a woman's right to make a decision about her body her. Reproductive freedom. How many children, she'll have when she will have children, and it is literally turning back the clock on settled law. This is not something, the American people support over seventy percent of American American people support, reproductive freedom and support the precedent of Roe v. Wade, the fact of the matter, as you said, is that this is not any surprise. President Trump made it very clear as a candidate. He wanted to overturn this. He won the presidency in part because his supporters wanted him to appoint conservative justices to the supreme court, potentially peeling Roe v. Wade if it came down to it. So I mean couldn't win argue that this is the will of the people at least to a certain degree. Well, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by three million votes. So I wouldn't say that. And if you ask. Ericans today. Do you believe in the precedent of Roe v? Wade and giving women basic human rights and civil rights to make decisions about their health their wellbeing their bodies and life or death medical decisions. They believe women should have that right? So we know where the American people stand on this, and that's why we have to lift up the voices of people in Georgia people in Alabama, women who will suffer under these new laws and make sure that their voices are heard, and I will lead this fight across the country. If I'm president, I will make sure that there is not a judge or Justice, who was appointed by me, a who will not Opole the precedent of Roby row. We've Robie Wade, and the truth is, I will guarantee that no matter where you live in this country in all fifty states, that a woman will have access to safe legal abortions and other reproductive care services. That Republican legislators are so intent on denying one litmus test for supreme court justices and Roe v. Wade would be one of those limits does I do. And I do because President Trump and Senator McConnell, have changed all the rules when it comes to appointing justices, when Mitch McConnell decided that President Obama was not entitled to his supreme court Justice, where America Arlen was denied a hearing vote. They changed the rules. President Trump has made clear. He's had a litmus test, and frankly, I believe in precedent settled law.

"Chill making it feel like thirty five on Don clip in in the WGN newsroom. Ready to join the conversation live whenever a story changes on Chicago's very own seven twenty WGN. Thank you down. This is John Williams Monday. I'll talk about my nightstand. If you follow me on social media on Twitter say I'm WGN king. John I posted a picture of my nightstand. And the books I'm reading some pretty interesting reads. They're all talk about those on Monday. We won't get to them today. We're going to get to the mincing rascals the award winning podcast, we produce here this week with our Steve Bertrand Justin Kaufman who does extension seven twenty at night and Patti Vasquez who's have pretty late on WGN radio as well. We were kicking around a couple of things, and we'll start here with part of the podcast where we talked about that Lincoln yards development that sterling bay has on the books and that the. City is approving we're going to get over a billion dollars in tax concessions. So they can build a multibillion dollar mixed use facility on the northwest side of the city at Lincoln yards. The first voice you here's Steve Bertrand. We spent one point three on roads that we're going to drive on and bridges that need to be fixed. I mean, it's not like it's not like it's going to anyone's pocket. This is for road repairs. Rerouting infrastructure that will be public publicly access for dead space. Right now is. You could argue you could argue against it. But it's not like it's going into their pockets. I just feel like we're getting to the point where the only way developers like everybody else in this world are getting to a point where like we can make money or we can make money. You know what I mean? It's not it's not anymore. And so these mega developments seventy eight and Lincoln yard. She talking about completely changing the way our city works, and the Lincoln you're talking about too. I think it's two or three sixty story fifty story buildings along the Chicago river, there are not the highest building tallest building on the north side. Chicago right now in that facility is where the Robie hotel is at north Damon in Milwaukee. Now, that's an old of corner building right there. Great rooftop bar. That's fourteen story has an and has an unobstructed view eastward to the city. I just I'm telling you the order Manhattan, my idea that that's the Finkel steel is what this is all about you. Remember that the book party there? This is this is this is that space, and there's been a lot of talk about what to put there and the plan that came forward is a plan to mega Cise and completely build a city that is that it could be its own city somewhere. I'm disappointed in you, Justin. I really am. Because I think, you know, I'm sick and tired of the city not doing big things. Big things. Make no small make no small plans. Thank you. Daniel. Expense. Will you tell me what's the expense? Right now, the expense right now at beast beyond the one point three billion dollars. We're going to lose the hideout is you. No, no. But there's something a little area about the communities that are just east and west of there, and you talk about buck Tom wicker park to the north. You have Lakeview to the Lincoln park to the west to the east those communities will change because of the influx of people. I think they're talking sixty thousand or so people that would be employed and living in that area. Think about the Kennedy that comes home you want manageable. And what I considered the smaller developed, how do you compare wicker park today to what it was twenty years ago? It's completely trampled. Lutely book. To me it stayed in the network of the neighborhood. But if you had a house set on Winchester, and you got that how someone came in and bought it. They built another house on top of it. They didn't build a forty story new building. What do you think wondering what other plans were proposed before that? Will we ever know? Were there any smaller ideas? But I I don't know. That's a foregone conclusion we this is the direction we're going to put a ping pong bar. Lord foot on the record opposed. This at wants to make sure that this is taxpayer and she stood on that for forty. Vote yesterday and said I'm good with it. I got my concessions. We're good to go. Concessions increase the number of DVD's, which. They did. How much more would have been avail? I mean, how much more they were willing to give their pretty fast. I want this to happen. Okay. I was in London in October. It would be like this. You know, this great, growth and development. I want to see the city doing big things. So I was I was discouraged when the finance committee held up the vote on Monday. But I just looks like she caved literally she turns it over to her floor, captain and says okay in forty eight hours that'll be enough time for us to hear both sides. I was surprised by that. I just wonder I wonder if it's political strategy because you wanna be a winner, and they had the votes. So if Lori Lightfoot says I wanted to lay this, and they go ahead and the alderman say, you're not my boss, right? And they push through. Do you start your tenure week you start your tenure where a city council essentially flipped you off? They might have done it without her. I would have been if if I voted for Lory Lightfoot, and she stood firm and the enshrine before her tenure Rahm Emanuel. Try to little sneaky move. Would make you you would say, okay. She's right now, she could sweep these guys out look at they just tried to at the in the middle of the night. They tried to the middle of somebody here who wants to put billions of dollars of private capital into the city. The sounds a little bit. But less to me like what happened at Wrigley field, or I'm trying to think of other areas in Chicago or somebody wants to private dollars in you might not like what it's going to do to river north or Wrigley Ville, or whatever. But it's private dollars going in. And in some point. We'll learn to live with it. We'll we'll be okay with a fifty story building a little bit west of Chicago, just one point three billion dollars in infrastructure. I thought that's what this conversation was going to be about the fact that those tiffs this one point three billion dollars. We're originally conceived to help blighted areas help inspire development where it might not have life. Life with brand on the idea of tiff reform in here. This was gonna happen. Either way. This is going to happen with no adjustments on the test. I think that's a problem too. You're right. She ran on and a tight about how Bosley considering getting rid of that. My concern was that it was going to turn into an Amazon HQ two thing that we were that the new administration was going to come in. And look like they were so leftist and progressive that they were going to thumb their nose at big a big development in the city. I think that would have had long term damage for the city. I wouldn't have run away the the same way. Amazon. Did I just don't I this is my impression you think? They would have downsized it. I wonder how much more was left there to give. Why do we need one point three billion dollars in tax payers money? Have you ever tried to drive east west on deliver difficult? Know that's difficult for fifteen years now. Lane. Afterwards. I mean, that's one thing density, and some of these neighborhoods is getting away from us and my friends who've lived longer and Wrigley Ville complain about that now I'm new there. So I'm used to it they go it didn't used to be like this. It doesn't have to be this way. Patty. Yeah. He's. If you. Zeal that was made just like the boss back in the day. What what deal was made to get the south side and west side alderman on board an emphatic about this Lincoln, speaking of conspiracy theories attorney general William bars has he's curious to see if the FBI did in fact smile on the Trump campaign. That's the way I put it put it that way. He he I do not put it that way. He said there was spying on a presidential campaign spying on a political campaign is a big deal, you can find somebody to support you. But it came about twenty minutes later. Well, they asked him about it again. They said Mr. Barry said, we're curious about the language, you're using that raises alarm bells when you use that kind of urban and he said, and it is my understanding. I'm not suggesting that those rules were violated. But I think it's important to look at that. He said that eventually, but at first he said, yeah, there was spying in in. There was a female. It was a woman Senator Shaheen. I think from New Hampshire and. She said did you do you mean to say that he goes, well, there was spying on a presidential campaign? I take that important. I take that he said, and now we have to look upon what it was predicated and see if it was justified spunk. John the CIA is in charge of spying. I promise, you know, director of the CIA has ever testified before congress that they spy rip it to use that word was so dismaying to me. Why did he do that? Because he wanted. I don't know. I really don't know tweet. I wanna have faith in this guy. But he bought right into the Donald Trump's can someone said yesterday he traded in his point he traded in his tortoiseshell Jack glasses for a tin foil hat. I think Nancy Pelosi put a well when she said, you're not the attorney general for the president or the attorney general for the people of the United States that is such a George of term in word for the attorney. He's talking about the FBI agents who work under him, the deputy turning general who works under him and signed off on this stuff. And he said they there was spying on the presidential campaign that now I want to see if it's justified. No one's going to hear that. And I just think he deleted in the senators from parties, I'm playing part of Justin on this issue. But the senators from both parties invited him to walk that back, and he didn't do it. So you're not you're not suggesting now that spine occurred. I don't well. I guess you could I think there's spying did occur. So we don't disagree that the federal government was listening in on or investigating the Trump campaign. I think that's been pretty widely reported. Yeah. Okay. Right. Because they had an interest to see whether or not there was any sort of cooperation with the Russians. Right, right. That's why they were doing it. And why did they start that? Because they had the Greek was drunk in London. Would joe. I mean, that's how it started. With an Australia was to something. It wasn't from eavesdropping. It was from a drunken London. And I think the talking points. Go beyond spy, you see now, President Trump is talking about testing a legal should Lori Loughlin a law Flynn, go to jail. Sure. Then we went onto that topic. So that's sort of a sample, and I had to edit out some of Justin Kaufman stuff because he just got riled up in Bertrand was egging him on or maybe it was the other way around. But that's the mincing rascals, by the way, I noticed that the rascals have not agreed on how you pronounce A UGA. H l I n we use Lachlan and Laughlin collectively. But you know, what we're talking about. The question became should flippity Huffman and Laurie go to jail and there were differing opinions about that the mincing rascals wherever you get your finer podcasts. This is W G. "Well, those scores in the big ten is the first game is the big ten tournament. Rutgers. Down twenty six twenty five terrific first-half for you, Gino Marie four for seven four four twelve a Rutgers twenty five points and Rutgers defensively. He's done a nice job Robie one for eight bomber to for nine. Really good job on those two players. But there was a little spurt Rutgers head and in Nebraska that Dino run that put them up. All right. It was twenty one fourteen. Rutgers with six minutes left in the first half. What adjustments in Nebraska village? You did it. I think the turnovers Rutgers had so many turnovers they have they have eleven points off the Toro's. Rutgers has nine records eleven two hours. The brass five nights a lot of tornadoes for team is fish just playing half court man to man defense. Rutgers, not really sharp. They were sharp early when they got after that quickly that twelve four lead. They struggle. A little bit. And if you're in Nebraska, you got to feel pretty good about where you are right now because you kind of weather the Rutgers storm and you're up by one and your two best players watching. I mean Palmer and Robie between them or three for seventeen for Rutgers Eugene has just been brilliant. They just need to get some help for other players. Yeah. Interesting. I have for sure no doubt. "And like what what can you tell us in this like the actual? Version of that that night that we don't already know. And like, I just don't know why again rebranding it as some sort of horror movie weird slender man all over again. Yeah. I agree with you guys. But let me play devil's advocate what differentiates this one between wants a time of once upon a time in Hollywood that's on about the Tate murders. That's just it takes place during that period. And it also doesn't over-dramatize like some. I mean, there's a home invasion that is horrifying, but use it the horror used the horror of it as a trope to sell it as a horror movie, it's hard to explain but trying to get at it. I know what you're saying. But I think you can make the argument that Quinter Tinos gonna make stylish movie, and even though it takes takes place around the time. Margot Robie does play Sharon Tate. You can make the case it's like this overly stylized movie. But at the same time, I think we have a little more faith in Tarantino to do something more tasteful than. A horror movie. So I'm on your I'm on your flood. I don't love it. There's this weird statute of limitations that seems to pass to where it's okay to make movies or trailers making a serial killer seem pretty neat which is just weird to me. But you know, it's not the first time. It's happened. It makes them seem like the boogeyman. It's fucking purge. The boogeyman just I don't know the way it's presented is just weird to me. I it just something feels wrong about it and off a little bit in. So I don't know I still still with the Zach Ephron movie. I really wanna see that. Because I wanna see how much that that review that said it was wildly different from the trailer really comes into play. I don't know if it makes sense because true crime has really taken off in the last couple years ever since podcast were invented in twenty seventeen bunch of true. Crime hog casts. Come hit. So make sense that movies about killing Zimmer. Orders are gonna pop up and from from the audience standpoint, it arouses a certain sense of curiosity. I think it was all the cut scenes, and I just it was basically like watching a movie, I did it for injustice, the new the newer one. Yeah. A lot of people do that. I think John camp is somebody who reviews just the cut scene movies for video games. And I'd like to get into the game as a whole that that for me that would end up being like, a thirty minute video are this question here. What are your thoughts on the future of film and video game? Is Roe v. Wade Is Hanging by a Thread?

"To transform the rule of law and our country during the campaign trump promised to only pick a prolife judges i am putting prolife justices on the court itchy abortion activists are calling it a pivotal moment while abortion rights defenders are saying they are in dire immediate danger the senate should reject on a bipartisan basis any justice who would overturn roe v wade or undermine key healthcare protections democrats insist there should be no confirmation vote at all until after the midterm elections they point to the fact that republicans blocked brock obama's last pick for ten months before the two thousand sixteen presidential election but republican leader mitch mcconnell says there must be no delay republicans are dealing with a razor thin one vote majority in the senate that means they can afford to lose only one that's why you can expect republicans to put intense pressure on three democrats three democrats who voted for neal gorsuch his choice last time around and who are now this year up for reelection it states that trump won big george stephanopoulos and cecilia vega spoke with abc's chief legal analyst dan abrahams san abc supreme court contributor kate shaw looking to answer the question so many are asking after justice kennedy's resignation why now robie wade that's where all the early energy is going to be that's right but let's be clear there's no question that roe v wade could be in jeopardy but that doesn't mean it's going to get overturned everyone's talking about overturned overturned as a practical matter justices liked to show deference to previous opinions meeting it's unusual to say we're simply going to overturn a decision because we now disagree with if it happens on occasion but it's very rare more likely what you see is an opinion effectively get gutted meaning states that want to restrict abortion will increasingly make laws that are more restrictive and more restrictive and then have those laws challenged in the hope that those laws are able to move forward and ineffective would mean that it becomes nearly impossible for women in a number of states to get and you can be sure that whoever president trump nominates is going to do his or her best not to show their hand on roe wade during the confirmation you don't want to admit you know what your position is on any case in the confirmation process the rule is when you're asked about a particular case you say this could come in front of me and as a result i'm night i'd have to see what the facts of the case were but you've got to believe that the president is going to know a lot about any candidate that he considers justice kennedy didn't make from the bench where you surprise you were there we all knew it was a possibility but i don't think anyone in that building really believed he was going to do impart because you know he seemed to send a message with his travel ban separate writing that he had some concerns about some of president trump's conduct and rhetoric he wrote separately to sort of say you need to acting ways that respect constitutional values like equality but in the end you know i think he did want to be replaced by republican president and this was the surest way to see that.
