"Dairy could cover a dead mule That the secondary wasn't as good this past week because they didn't have joe haden. They took one of the best passing offense in the nfl. In two thousand twenty and basically shut them down in week one and then when they were missing people when we to they we kind of saw works. What do you say about anything about that question. Yes saw saw the works and believer artists. More than joe haden missing because things you think. Well maybe we can cover up for that. Well you cover up from that by getting a great pass rush. And then when tice watt goes down a lugas down basically. You're left with Cam hayward trying to get the pressure on and although we got guys around the quarterback we didn't it didn't feel the same way as it. Didn't we one. Yeah we had guys around the quarterback but we weren't hitting the quarterback so much We weren't rushing the plays and and that then magnified those warts in the secondary. Okay i have to ask you a very important question. Okay because you have author privileges at the steel curtain dot com one-stop shop for all the pittsburgh steelers because you do right the knee-jerk reaction article which you can check within twenty minutes. After every steeler game did you go in on the dashboard and read the vertex article by myself and jeffrey benedict for tomorrow. Because you just summed it up right there. I really no i did not do in 'cause i try not to you know why. Yeah 'cause i enjoy readings from the what. I try not to peak in get ahead of things so no i did not. Yeah what we were talking about. Is the different how the entire defense changed entire passing defense. Change particularly when t. j. Watt went out the snowball effect. If if you will now the domino you would adopt different. Dominance felt okay. The the first you had. Joe haden. bush out. That's a dominant okay. But the one that really rocked that defense. Then you felt you could maybe do enough to cover up and get by until las. Tj watt and. Then we just didn't. And i don't want to say that we weren't anywhere close. We were just short probably of having what we really need it you. You're right and this is something that you gotta remember a coach. Tom brought this up in his press conference if he didn't get to check it out. We have an audio only podcast out there that that i did today. That to sum up the the press conference It's it's on our audio platform anywhere. You listen to podcasts. Look for von steel curtain or steelers. And you'll find this but what coach tomlin said was about the injuries that they have which we're going to get to we to talk about those a little bit because that's important but the injuries have going into this week. The difference now is that it's a lot easier to deal with your injuries when you know them on tuesday and it's very difficult to deal with endgame injuries. Because you've made a plan for the game between you and me devon bush. Joe haden not even being on the injury report until friday. That was huge. That i expected both of them the platelets. Because i'm like wonder if they just you know had him limited in everything on all might have been feeling a little something so. Let's not have them do. This is much either of them. Neither of them went. I don't even know if devin bush if they worked him out before the game. I didn't see i know. They did joe hayden to see if he could go. I don't know if bush was at that point or not. Because i didn't see that i was dealing with so many other things and then both of them are out and you're as soon as i saw that that's when i got nervous. I was ready to go change my lineup. Because i had two steelers defense. I said i said i'm gonna give change it then. I didn't simply because like every time i change at the team that are changed it from does great and you know what i should have changed because maybe they would have done greats. You know what. I'm saying volt. I never thought about that until just now i should have changed you anymore. You're here you're outta here. But i was instantly concerned with both of those players being. Because here's the domino effect like you talk about with devon bush out joe schober test to become devon bush and joe show bert. It's much easier as joe. Schober to be joe schubert than devon bush. Yes but because then. Robert's blaine had to be joe schubert. Now all of a sudden you're asking camp sutton to be joe haden and jean-pierre to became sutton where the week before cam set did a really nice job being cam sutton up but in this week here to be joe haden i mean we know what's next man up and things like that but you know what if the next man up was that great. He'd be getting more playing time. You know what i'm saying. Then you look at all alu. Carlos davis was inactive. So then you're just working on getting playing time and you're going to rotate that their Because the steelers were actually playing bass defense which they didn't do it all in the in week one. But then the t. j. watt thing. Now i don't want to downplay the contributions of melvin ingram. The third outside smith.

"Pittsburgh steelers fans welcome back to the second part of the steelers. Post game podcast. I'm jeff hartmann senior editor behind the steel curtain. Dot com joining me as always scofield editor. Bt se and. brian. Anthony davis or podcast producer. We are continuing to go through our of ratings. Were grading giving out grades. Zoe's always in the post game. Before we do this. I wanna talk about the inactive list. Roberson go ahead and explain. It does what happened the list. I think this matters now. Okay well and not only that. I had several players that i thought i picked all the correct positions for the inactive list. I just wasn't sure which players it would be those positions and i actually had an article ready to go. I had names in there. So i could delete other names like i'm gonna pick up the most notable name and put it is the headline so i get the inactive list. I put the headline on their buddy johnson and active for this leads inactive for steelers week. One only to find out nine minutes later when the steelers publish it. It's not buddy johnson. It's robert splaine now. They always give it to labrador report and he reports it apparently from the time they told him. Hey this is what it's going to be sent out at eleven thirty to the time. They actually had to turn it in is when they had to make the call with roberts poulain having a shin injury in pre-game warmups so therefore spelane ended up out and buddy johnson ended up in. So that's why it was a roberts blaine some people it's like. Oh this is going to. What's being to the depth chart now. It was an injury thing so they went with it. Don't know where that would put split on special teams. I thought of it right off the bat Kickoff return if that would have been different but who knows but that's how that went down all right. It's good to note because we're going to talk about the defense. Let's start off looking at josh allens numbers. We're going to base our grades off of that. Josh islanders thirtieth fifty one thirst for two hundred and seventy yards of five point. Three average one touchdown. No interceptions was sacked three times. He's a tough guy to bring down. That's really important. Seventy nine point seven rating. Let's talk about the steelers pass rush. I the steelers finished the game with eight quarterback hits okay. That's that's incredible and then three sacks tj wad with two cameron heyward with a third. The was almost a half a sack. Two and a half. I wasn't sure if they're going to give tj half on that one. But hayward was definitely there. I but tj helped from not getting away. Sorry if josh allen is. Let's say tom brady type. Quarterback is going to sit in the pocket or what had eight tax they have lit up the scoreboard data. Stacks Like the rolling rate the pass rush. Grade the pass rush. I should say bryan. we'll start with. You will go in the same order. I thought the pass rush was absolutely phenomenal. I have one guy that i want to. Mention is melvin ingram. The third i think he changes what they can do on that team by having a third starter in there so you mix and match and pull those guys in and out move them around. He's playing on both sides In relief he's playing early and often. He's getting to the quarterback. I thought they were great. I did not expect. I was afraid that that sack record was going to fall this week and it looked for a while that all right it very well could but then they got it going in also not just the sax how many more would had if the bills weren't holding everybody highsmith would have had a sack there. There was ingram. Would've had a sack. There were so many sack opportunities. Okay so did you. What was a great again. A all right. Dave grade to pass rush yeah. That sounds good. A sounds great. I mean how great is it to where. Tj watt comes off the field and you're not overly concerned about it because you've got two other players that are that are also getting the job done. I'm not saying they're both. Tj watt. but what i'm saying is it's not. it's not oh my goodness what a fall off that all three of them fantastic job constantly bringing the pressure they were they were held. I put a picture on twitter. The touchdown that bill scored the offense of teaching what made around the office of live at. He reached back and grabbed. His shoulder was the only reason. Josh allen was not sacked on that and threw that touchdown pass and how that doesn't get called. I don't know that one was to me. The most egregious out of any of the missed calls. But that's just what they were what they were doing But i mean my dad asked me is is the bills line that bad or steelers pass rush that good to me. The steelers patrushev at good i agree. They were the elite. They was an elite performance. By the pass rush. Let me ask you this because you are. Brian socially bryant is david you. You've mind for this dumb. Michael back was asking on twitter. Is this the best dealers trio of pass rushers that we've ever seen at least in the modern era. Think about the pass rushers so we have ingram highsmith. What is there been any trio. That's better either of brian. Dave whoever wants to dl. Go you know what i'm going to say. No this isn't the best. 'cause that blitzburgh team had a lot of great pass rushers you had. You could throw gilded and chad brown in the mix along with the fact that you had green and lloyd just just edge persistent so ask edges that so much that you put them all you want to get them all three on the field at the same time the no. I don't think there's another if you're just talking straight and rushers. Yes edge the no. I can't recall anybody. Yes it was the third harrison woodley. Was there a third there for them. Was it a hagen was was it world's world's was there in two thousand ten You had hagen's in there for a little bit because like but even even then that's not even comparable. Yeah i know this is really that good and being that good and the other two being that good you know. This is just one game yeah. Tj watts on pace for thirty four sacks here. and i'm you know what with them half they would've would've yeah. It'd be forty two tom. You're against us three dollars. One for each total sack. Thank you tom. We appreciate it indeed. Are i give them an a. What else can be said. But let's go to the secondary. The steelers did surrender a lot through the air. Three two hundred seventy yards but boy. That's what the second one attempts though. Yeah you're right you're right you're right you're right When you look at the numbers. I mean pass breakups or pass defenses. Make ahead one g the cam hayward with two ingram with one seven total.

"That means greg lloyd or kevin green or one of your inside live and they've got to go cover that guy right. That linebacker has to go cover that wide receiver. We'll teams smart and started attacking those matchups and so team started using more defensive backs you would take out a linebacker put in a defensive back but that nickelback role is really an outside linebacker. That's all it is you've just in zone. Coverage isn't a lot of defenses. They act exactly like normally a sam linebacker. The strong side linebacker actually just becomes a defensive back so they are playing that role and it's important to note that because teams quickly figured out that if you have a really small fast guy in that nickel defender role and i can shift my you know. I can pull lineman. I can do stuff to get a running back. Fullback tight end or an offensive lineman blocking that player. Well that's just an easy win. That's an easy win for the offense and we can run all over you team start running out of three wide. Receiver sets much more as they learn. Hey if guys are gonna counter and take out that big linebacker and put in a small shifty fast guy will then we're going to run out them and that's how you get a player like a mike hilton. Mike healton after call him a slot linebacker because he played like a linebacker. And that's key because it is a linebacker role. The the run defense angles. The the nickelback is usually called an alley defender there and outside force player. They have to keep contain on a lot of runs to stop the run from getting outside trying shield force it inside or the two linebackers can get to it. Well mike was great at that because he would take on tight ends he would take on fullbacks he could take on a tight end. He can put even took on pulling offensive lineman they would. It would pull a guard you know across to try and block mike and mike with throw himself into that guard hard enough to stop that guards momentum despite the fact that the guard had seven eight inches and one hundred pounds or more they were just that much bigger than mike helton but he would take them and you have to be able to if you think about it. Mike hilton was smaller. Whenever they did a running play at my hilton he was smaller than the player blocking him and he was smaller than the player running at him with the ball. He was smaller than both of them and in his job to defend that. So so you understand. The the slot defender the nickelback the primary slot defender. That is a tough position. That is a very tough position to play. And the guys who can be that small and that physical while still being able to cover wide receivers are rare. Mike hilton wasn't the greatest coverage but there aren't many people that can be better than he was in coverage as good as he was in the run game and also bring glitzy. And that's the last part i wanna talk about. This is not normally a requirement to play the nickel position. But this is something the steelers really light and brings a lot of value to their defense when it works. Well a nickel blitz is incredibly hard to defect simply because that player is wide. They're far off the line off outside of the lineman so have a very different angle to defend that an offensive lineman has to get outside and back really fast and they're bigger guys right there. A bigger guy. Mike hilton one of his strengths. In blitzing was timing up. The snap count to where when the quarterback would look down to to prepare to receive the ball nowadays just doing fake calls calling plays and stuff at that point. Mike hilton still lined up right over the wide receiver when that quarterback would look down to receive the snap. Because obviously he's got a focus on the ball if you if you don't catch the ball on us on a shotgun snap the play's dead. We've seen that. We i mean. I don't need to bring up traumatizing. Memories for every steeler fan from this past winter. I don't need to bring that up but we know how bad it is. When a quarterback can't catch a shotgun snap so the quarterback is focusing on the ball once he puts his head down and focuses on the ball. Mike hilton would go from looking like he is covering that receiver to being ready to blitz. He would come right up on the line changes angle. And he's right there ready to blitz and attack the quarterback the offensive lineman can see it with a quarterback. Doesn't he asked to take the snap. Like e look down in the ball is about to come and my children with time it up boom and then he's coming and it would really cause trouble for offenses. Now one of the ways. You can deal with that. Is you have your running. Back block the nickelback. We're running back. Scott forty pounds on my hilton. You can block the steelers under keith butler. Weaponized that by using. What what i've called on the show before hug blitzing hug blitz is like a green dog blitzer some other things but basically if you're on the running back in the running backstays in the block. Now you're now. You just rushed the quarterback right. The steelers do an more advanced version of that called hug. Bulleting where at the snap. A linebacker in man coverage on a running back is attacking. They are running coming forward in their coming forward. Quick while they're coming forward they're running straight at that running back so if it's a run play. Well yeah you wanna run right at the running back. That's your dude. You want to tackle him. If it is a passing play in the in the running back as a blocker. He's already in there right. You've already taken away. The advantage of having an extra guy blocking by having basically a blitzing linebacker coming just simply add that running back to start and they can adjust in rush off of that. You lose the man advantage because the linebacker ads in if the hard part in hug blitzing is if that running back is doing a route is sliding out slipping out of the pocket and is a receiver that linebacker has to then veer off and cover them. It's something roberts. Blaine actually was really good at last season. It was something he did. Well when he was matched up on running-backs those hug blitz. Meant that when mike hit when you thought my children was coming in the quarterback would tell his his running back. Hey don't run your out. Stay in and protect me. I think mike helton's coming will now. You've got another linebacker. We still have a man advantage. It's just the inside linebacker instead of mike hilton. Your you still have the advantage. And they're still another person in there and the offense is lost a receiver. So the one guy you have in zone and the other guy. Their jobs are slightly easier. The more the more people are in the blocks. And you still having you still have a number advantage on the blitz. That's an advantage for the defense. Mike hilton was a big part of that. Because of how hard. It is for an offensive lineman to block in nickel blitz and how much easier it is to have a tight end or running back account for that. It's just that much easier. It more sense and the hug bullets is took advantage of that now. Teams don't always use slot receivers out of as a wide receiver. It's not always a wide receiver. Manning that spot in the offense sometimes a team will come out with a two tight end set with one running back and only two wide receivers but then they send a tight end outside out wide and put a wide receiver in the slot. Plays like that in other situations. Were running backs. Go out into the is typical to end up with a linebacker covering in the slot. The steelers do that quite a bit again famously. In the in the wild card..

"I mean it's a possibility I wouldn't complete roll it out but honestly if you're really torn between those two i think raider is the easier choice to get to the practice squad. Because i think they still want to keep him and possibly elevate him like. They did in the playoff game last year. So that would that would be the only thing. We're in essence you. You're going to have four tight ends. Just only three of them on the roster and now the tough position that's the offensive line at typically. They carry about nine. This could go a bunch of different ways. We know that the starting projected starters. I guess i guess you can just call it. The starting offensive line at this point. Trae turner's act banner tubes the core for kevin dotson in kendra. Green are all locks and then after that you get into. Who else are locked. I think the dan moore junior. Is you agree with that okay. Yes he's a lock. I would say the jc hours a lock based on the fact that he's the only other player that has gotten reps at center. Do you agree. Well the only other player that will realistically make the team. That's gotten rapid center. But i mean no i mean. Bj finney didn't i mean as i would have to double check to make sure that this wasn't the case friday night. I i don't remember seeing there. But i haven't actually looked at the snap counts from friday night to know that that it was just yet that finney has not played center. It's all been guard. Okay then it comes down to okay sedan. Moore's your backup tackle. Jc senator backup center can play some guard. But you're going to want some more depth at guard and is between guys like bj's finney rashad coward Joe hague tackle now for me. I had bj finney. I like his position versatility. They played mainly a guard. We all agree that that's a stronger position than center. But if you needed a third string center you have him any complaint other position. Something coward does not have so. I have finney making the team. Then you have joe. Hey guy have him making the team. He's a veteran. they did sign this offseason. That's my nine right. They're yours is a little different. Explain why you kicked. Bj out in went with rashad coward. Yeah i went the reason i did that. As cowards been playing well he he he had probably had the best game of any linemen this past week at least up pro football focus thought he did for the steelers. My thing with me is he could almost be like another one of those situations. I said with trae edmunds. Unfortunately i hope this isn't the case. I'm really worried about zach. Banner on a plane. Twelve snaps in the preseason and then not even making the trip to carolina if he's not ready to play the whole game and then they don't need him at all if you know what i'm saying if you're going to have to call on someone an offensive lineman for part of the game offensive. Linemen are used to playing on a present of the snaps. if he can't do one hundred percent of the snaps. I mean is it simply because they're trying to not overwhelm dan moore. I mean that would be it. I mean otherwise if if banner isn't ready and he needs to go to the i r then fini's the guy that you cut and say all right we're gonna bring you back to the same salary tomorrow. That's the reason. I said that he's more likely to do it. Because he's been around with the organization of the past. But i this is. This is the difficult cut that i can't make. That's why the last time. I kept ten alignment just because that was good would have to pick. I still don't know that i could pick so interesting. It's gonna be interesting to see how they have a handle. The situation on the is great point about banner that never thought about that. Let's go to the defensive side of the ball. The defensive line we have seven players making the defensive line. We're talking the defense of interior cam hayward steph onto tyson. Luke chris warmly. They're all locks. And i would even say isaiah louder milk locked based on the fact that he was drafted player and they traded into the fifth round. Twenty twenty one to get him now. Who else makes it. I mean right now. You have the same. Carlos davis in henry mondo. We added henry mondo to this group to go from six to seven in the latest predictions but is a bugs his him getting cut but a lot of people have been very underwhelmed by carlos. Davis times day was a difficult for you making these decisions on the defensive front absolutely. They've got eight they really do. They've got eight. And and frankly. If those who i would consider i consider the bottom three because we haven't had mondo in there. He's been getting the snaps right behind. Chris worm i and he's been doing a nice job. Worm was been doing a nice job. So he's been the next guy in there getting snapped and louder. Milk has just been a guy that they're trying to keep around to develop another year. He's been doing fine as well so so now i'm looking i. I don't think they want to give up on louder milk for any reason. But i'm saying if if there's any way someone wanted either mondo davis or bugs if anyone was going to give you a pick or or even just exchange pick like a sixth seventh or something like that for any one of those three. 'cause i just don't see that they could keep guys and i think someone's going to get snagged otherwise but that's a really tough call it is it is and it's a good problem to have but the now when you get to cut down day it becomes an actual physical problem because you you hate to lose the ones who maybe there is a trade candidate out there. I'm not sure but we have isaiah bugs being on the outside looking in. Let's go to outside linebacker we know. Tj watt hopefully. the contract issue gets rectified. Before the week one game Alex highsmith melvin ingram their locks but then we only went with four with four and we both had the same player and it was a drafted player getting cut and not making this team that sixth round. Pick quincy rochet. We have jamir jones making the team. Jamir jones. I had him on my winners list from the last week. He's had a great preseason. I think he's earned that spot. But i know david a huge cue from the fan this to be tough. Tell saying that. He's he's on the outside looking in. I mean maybe they bring him back on the squad. That would be ideal. Based on the fact. Melvin ingram future. Who knows what that is with pittsburgh It would be great to get him back but he just hasn't he hasn't shown enough for me to pick him over jamir dance yet and honestly. I think it's been. I don't think quincy rochet was battling jamir jones in all honesty. I think jamir jones now rochet might even had a little bit of a better game in jones in this last one. They both played out really well on special teams. I'll tell you that With with i think jones definitely had had the advantage on the special teams but not by much because they both know but my my thing is is. It's all about that last linebacker spot. This was almost as much. Quincy rochet versus buddy johnson or any other linebacker that you had in their Inside versus outside linebacker. So i'm just saying as much as i'd like to keep rochet it him being on the practice squad round pick starting to the practice squad maybe finding his way to the roster later on if if the need arises you know you just described antoine brooks last year so as long as they can get in there then. I think that that might be the way to go now. Fans are listening to this and you might be driving your car walk in a treadmill going for a run. Whatever you listen to calculate quincy rochet. This guy's got so much potential. Just remember like trey. Edmunds is an example. And we kept him in our predictions. He could easily not make the team. You get cut. And they add a outside linebacker in this. And he goes an extra defender. Let unless guys on offense did exactly exactly so. This is all flexible. This our prediction. Steve data my now inside linebacker as you alluded to is is not easy. Devin bush joe schober Are locks obviously. I would say. Roberts blaine even though he's at his struggles is preseason is a lock. Now we move marcus allen because we had him in the defensive back category who had it i did. I didn't have that was neat. Dimmed in moved into the linebacker where he belongs. And we have buddy johnson staying so we had five inside linebackers. I don't think that's a bad thing. Some people are screaming from the rooftops of golf. You only need four. Did you say that last season when they lost evan bush i don't think so you're probably screaming. They need better. I like buddy johnson. He just didn't play a lot in the last few games. They wanna see what other linebackers of rain. I didn't hesitate to keep him. Did you believe her buddy johnson..

"That are more fatalities. If you ask me. And i'm not convinced that there's line is going to be out there like Just running people over like there paving cement on the highway. No i think we're going to be quick. More quick passes a hope we get it. We get this great running game although if you noticed in the preseason. We're having been necessarily strong running team. Sure we had that great dump off to nause. That might be it might be. It might be that run running game by pass. Yes that left bell type of running game. Am i off base. I think you're right. I think that all entirely counts. I also think if this offensive line were say the twenty third in the league they would be that probably win the division. I mean they go into. They go into the playoffs very strong. I think even finishing in you know the third of four quadrants. An offensive line would be an amazing improvement. I mean i know. Our podcast is focused so much upon fans think in it's just it just hit me now like how opt how big we are on this offensive line versus last year when so many of us were trying to talk ourselves into no-no these guys still god. They've looked rough but you look at their resumes. They got the gastro got bound. See these guys have been here forever. They can still do this. And we were wrong about that and this. I think that. I think that's part of what fuels the over action. Dan moore junior. Hey this guy looks great block and is due in the second quarter against the panthers. Let's keep them out there forever. I think i think we're i think while the fans are very us fans are very optimistic about. I think we have a little bit of reason to start man again. I keep i keep thinking back podcast today. We're like oh no you gotta understand. Don't get ahead of yourself you know. We're being donors were being downers. Look we're going to be the people that pick everyone up. Talk about how they're still okay. Once they lose one of these games particularly its first week in orchard park. Oh yeah yeah you think we're trying to we're trying to bring you back to earth now. Yeah during the season when you guys are all out there being toxic haters. We'll be the love fest be. I won't be waving our pompoms pouring the love potion here ever flowing top bottom line. Is you know you got to you. Got to taint tamper your expectations on this line. Rats dan moore is going to get snaps this season. I think that's percent. I don't think he's gonna get a thousand snaps this season. That would probably be something went wrong. Well let me. We're having these real good long. Drives rousing snaps exit. Run it three yards okay. We've got to move on to the well you know. Let's let's talk before we talk about the hate. Okay let's talk one more bid on the lovelace. There's so much so much love going around. Even the media getting love from steelers nation. You know the media loves to put steelers nation down. And i'll tell you why the reason is is because we have one of the most passionate fan bases out there so if you say something bad about the steelers It's guaranteed that all of us are going to click that article to see what the heck you're talking about every time you know. That's that's where the national media is coming from a lot of times. We we can make a hot take on the steelers because we want that steeler nation clicks. No one's making those hot takes about leonard fournette her about urban meyer. There's urban meyer hot takes there. But the two lions we just saw the lions hot. Take on the lion's you know so the so there's a reason why the media goes after the steelers and it's four the clicks for the views. But hey this week. Even the media is loving the steel. How often are you gonna see a tweet like like this. Let's see this tweet. This is from. Melissa at 'em drizzly twenty two. Oh big steelers fan. She's like nice man. This is why. I've always respected marcus spears from espn. I've always respected. Marcus spears takes on the steelers good or bad in another miked up sports one. marcus spears. This is on the spot. For marcus spears. So you're like. Wow what did what mark speir say indeed. All he had to say was this was on. Espn place big. ben is not done. Obviously. I give mike tomlin the benefit of the doubt. That coach went eight eight with mason rudolph in duck. Hodges wow he's speaking common sense and that gets you big praise on the internet. But hey you know. I gotta say marcus. Marcus spirited the bottom line this. I give mike tomlin the benefit of the doubt enough said okay haters if the national media knows what's up at least one one guy on the national media we have to go This mr spears. This much praise simply for reading a stat line. Read the statistics. And i said eight. I did just strike me. As you're saying this that i give mike tomlin. The benefit of the doubt could be the alternate title for this podcast or our motto. Like what we live by here. Is i give mike. Tomlin the benefit of the doubt. I like it. I like it. We might we might might. I'll talk to brian. We might have to change the benefit of the doubt. Podcast all right. Let's see let's go onto the hate because you know it hasn't been at all love fest there. The one player not getting any love this week. Which is a shame because a month ago man will we fired up on this guy he was gonna save defense he was going to bring back that lambert. Excess attitude on defense and today. He's in the doghouse talking about roberts. Spelane what happened to roberts bulane robert you know a two months ago. We were talking about his big. Stop on against the titans. We were talking about his big pick against the ravens in today man g. Sh-she here's here's the tweets on on spelane. Okay again. This is from at tommy. Jaggi man roberts. Blaine has been atrocious this summer. I would generally genuinely question whether he's worth a roster spot I understand that people are down on spelane. I mean obviously the guy has some struggles keeping up with tight ends and wide receivers. That are running through but man. I don't get the idea that there's something wrong with spelane he instantly becomes a really pretty good backup inside linebacker. I mean now you've gone to a real position of strength here where hey schober gets hurt or god forbid something happens to bush again. Now you've got a not at all bad real thumper in there that can maybe you know come in and get some big snap storing a game. It's one of those things just because somebody is not a star doesn't mean that they aren't useful. Yeah i mean if he gets cut who takes his played. We're talking marcus allen and sees gilbert or buddy what about that rookie body johnson. Who had been on the field if at all in the last few games..

"Klay poll after the injury that he had at practice on tuesday at a make sure day on tuesday now visit possible. He's back in. What's the plan a little bit. Yes does he need to know if there's any doubt that that ankle still little bit tender then don't do it he was. He didn't practice a wednesday but he was out jogging around catching some passes and everything so it looks like he's long-term he's going to be fine and if it means that he misses one preseason game all shocks. I'm just happy that it's not the alternative. And then of course defense. You will be missing steph onto it and t. j. watt but that just it since those are positions that you see some rotation anyway. You're going to see some quality time from the guys that are going to see snaps in the regular season on defense. Whether that be someone like a chris warmly whether that be an isaiah louder milk. Who has looked better than i expected. This preseason if it's going to be a carlos davis or a henry mondo or isaiah bugs. They have lots and lots of options. The defensive line. You're still going to see those guys out there and it's not like it's going to be someone starting off the game that you're expecting the not even have a helmet. Come game day. If you know what i mean based on those positions and you could see the same thing about wide receiver because if a chase clayton's out just like what happened in practice on wednesday james washington stepping up and making plays. He's getting a chance to be out there a little bit more. So those are actually positions than at the steelers are going to have a player not playing. That's better. That's i don't know if it's better but i mean it's better than the alternative. It's better than like say the offensive line where there's guys generally play one hundred percent of the snaps in a game or but say safety. Were one of those. Those guys are known to play a one hundred percent of the snaps. Each game also excited to see how things going to fit together with joe. show bert. because we've got a little bit time here to talk a few numbers. I hate to say it. But at the same time i have to say it when you look at the pf grades. And i've said this a bunch of times. This is data. This is number. I'm giving you the data. Pf grades if you decide that you don't care about them one bit at all. I'm fine with that. There are towns. I'm like my goodness that's off. I thought pits had a nice interception. I didn't know that everything that he did cost him to. Ninety seven point two things of that nature but if you look at the bottom of the of the defensive ranks the last four guys are all middle linebacker. They're almoner linebackers of roberts blaine marcus allen. Yuji three in devon bush where the four lowest. Pf scores and i mean because devon bush had a very poor coverage score we gave up a one one past the tight end where he stumbled But as jeffrey benedict's has said many times before the vanilla defense at the steelers are playing is really putting their inside linebackers. A hard spot when it comes to coverage because they're not they're not trying to tip off what they're going to do during the regular season and therefore these guys are are basically asked to match up one on one in places where they're not going to be asked to do that during the regular season or in that manner which is interesting because you know buddy. Johnson still had a very high score in this last game. He was the one middle. Linebacker granted was only seven snaps on because the other inside linebacker. That was that didn't have a terrible score. Was calvin bondage. But he only had three snaps and and you know an average bff score. You basically did nothing. The whole game You get a sixty. That's kind of their baseline or they start yet. Fifty nine point nine so in his three snaps he did one thing that just caused him to get dinged a little bit of other than that. So i if you if you really understand how that works. So i wanna see on defense. I wanna see a little bit more of what we could. Maybe expect toward these inside..

"He's better at that are so for me what we're looking at. What steelers debt. As they got an upgrade on roberts blame when it comes to play down and being run stopper they got an upgrade roberts filleting in terms of calling plays and knowing the defense and adjusting to what the at you and they got a guy who can cover and maybe blitz. There's gonna be some interesting things were that we're going to have to see play out like for example. Joe schober was on a terrible defense. Was he targeted less. Because the guys around him were worse than so he was just not the easiest guy to pick on right or roberts. Blame was often hey who he had a target. You're gonna target that backup guy who's never played. Who has you know before last season had exactly one snap on defense and his career so yet he got targeted more are are you gonna see where maybe joe schubert in this defense puts up better stats you know per target. Maybe he gives up fewer completions and so his yards per target. Go down in this year. Maybe we see joe. Schubert is actually a really good blitzer and his his rush percentage in his pressure rates. Go up or maybe we see. That's not a strength of his. And roberts blaine is just a better blitzer. That joe schober. Who knows there are some leeway here that we're gonna have to find out we're going to feel out how schober fit specifically in this defense. Statistically wise like what his productions going to be as he changes roles from from. You know the jacksonville defense to this defense. But really if you watch film. He's very similar to robert splaine. So what you saw the good of robert spilling last year with a little better run stuffing That's what i expect from. Joe schubert this year which is great. That's an upgrade. That's a that's a great addition especially for the for the cost. They got him for so two round out the show into our last little segment here on go through the last rest of the position. We spent a lot of time. Joe show burton inside linebackers. How he fits in devon bush gonna be your number one linebacker if he's healthy. You know there's a chance to steelers really are trying to limit his snaps early in the season because he's not one hundred percent yet i would understand the case or if they just say hey you know what we're we're going to give you a little break. You played a ton last season or give fewer snaps. But he's your number one linebacker eastern over one linebacker show. Joe shelbert is good and coverage but there's people out there saying he's better than david bush coverage in that's just simply not true. Film does not back that up numbers. No back that up. It's just it's not true Joe showers can be number two and he's playing a lot. He's gonna play a lot. He is a veteran of the group. He's going to be that you know the the voice in the helmet. He's gonna be the guy with the green dot he's going to be calling the defense colin adjustments which is good. We need someone who's really good at that. We haven't had someone who's really phenomenal. At that sense james farrior. He might be the best at it. Sense james farrior left and that would be a significant addition to our defense in no other way. is joe schubert. The equivalent of james farrior. That wanted to be clear to say that in case people here that wrong thing. I'm saying joe schober is that good. He's not a but he's going to be the best. Probably you know that that calling captaining the defense. The james farrior dick from a linebacker position. He's probably be the best sense. James farrer left that we have doing that specific job behind him. Roberts he's he's like joe schober and i would not be surprised if they wanna give joe schober to a break. You know it would be probably like in nickel. Where roberts billion really fits in. Well roberts plays a great fit in the nickel defense At at inside linebacker. I would not be surprised to see him there where he can add his blitzing to the pile. Then you have some interesting players behind there. You've got ulysses gilbert the third. You've got marcus allen. And you've got buddy johnson buddy johnson the rookie draft. He looks good. He is more of a thumper he's going to be that guy who can who can mix it up in line take on blockers stuff to run. He's not bad in coverage either at least at the level he's playing now which is kind of the second to third string Players for the other team is what he's been facing and he's shown pretty. Well they're ulysses gilbert. The third loved what he showed as a rookie Loved it his first preseason. He looked dynamic. He got injured. He's a series of injuries. And he has he hasn't really developed and in fact this season you know. I'm still looking for him to get back to looking like that player. He looked like when the steelers had just drafted more. He looked so impressive. I don't know maybe his injuries means he's never going to get back to that ply being that player right now. He's in a battle with marcus allen. Just make this roster bush over explain are gonna make it a buddy. Johnson is is going to be very hard to knock out simply because he is a rookie and he is looking. Really good. Just not quite. Nfl for snaps on defense radhi. He looks like a guy that next year could really take a huge second year. Leap marcus allen. Played really good in very limited snaps against philadelphia. He is not anyone you want to take on a blocker. He is just get swallowed up by blocks but in space and particularly Like a dime back role where he is taking on where he's in coverage on linebackers and coverage in zone. He's really good. He showed some fantastic aggressive defense on running backs against philadelphia When he was in there against a pretty good rookie gain well for For for philadelphia. Who's a good receiver. he did a fantastic job manned up on him really fantastic work. He knows the defense. He's he's got the the i q side down..

joe schober roberts joe schubert james farrior Joe schober steelers roberts blaine schober robert splaine Joe schubert devon bush buddy johnson Joe shelbert ulysses gilbert david bush Joe showers blitzer Schubert James farrer marcus allen

"If you now look at steven nelson is to appoint justin lane follows him. With twelve point seven classmates with eleven point full karen sought mode eleven point three devin bush with ten point eight now giving my devin. Bush plays that should be about where it is if he can lower that down into the building on the light aids. That'll be that'll mike hilton was nine point two. Everyone's on put one. Both guys not on the roster definitely not my killed nissan of the bengals roberts blaine eight point full marcus allen. Eight and again. He was playing more of a that. Daca role playing Linebacker position as well in some games in swing him six points six. And i think that's pretty cool for vince. Because all people you've been slow to trouble in terms of coverage i mean that's pretty olsen and then tj water only five yards so Obviously doing pretty well. Did you feel during the bowl of the outside linebacker thrown appreciate. Just one interesting team to keep in mind. Lets the odds completion. Let's move across two touchdowns allowed terms touchdowns allowed nelson allowed the merced again. Now again going out will hang on. He had ninety eight targets. You know he'll add fifty point two completion in the most amount of yards One hundred yards that he had thrown. He'll sir was more than double haden. Who hadn't allowed three touchdowns seventy nine targets so is less than twenty twenty. Difference there in terms of talk. It's jordan allowed. A small percentage Allowed less like less than half the the number of touchdowns at steven nelson while loud. That's pretty interesting mean. Kill allowed to two touchdowns de which i think given me this targeted if you make that mistake in the in from a schematic perspective people will take it to the house equally. You know when you look at the game against cleveland in the finals. But you know i think there was a big mistake from him or one of those games. There was another like gang wearing night. A bad raid to that's interesting about mink could because all of us into the draw dude From the draft network couple of weeks ago. One of the guys in miami dolphins vanity heights on the Left out of his building the ultimate. Nfl team purely because of a he left the dolphins but the one thing did say infant is that any does actually right mean to fitzpatrick. Tell how much he goes on about how much she hates him. But one thing he doesn't talk about his nieces. Some has quite quite a few tackles trump point to miss tackle right. percentage in twenty twenty with eleven means tackle. So he's that is something to be aware of with me. The handsome find in a bit of an extreme decision. I ruin sin. Vince williams oil to touchdowns h not Sort of odd five there. Excuse me that's pretty soon touchdown perspective now. The final stop that i really wanted to look at. This was the quarterback rating. That was that was allowed now. Just lane almost allowed a perfect quarterback getting close to one hundred fifty three point six or something but he allowed one hundred thirty. Eight point five quarterback right. Now we know he allow ten targets. He qualifies for the gods but working out then was ever williamson who will add a quarterback rating one hundred and twenty six point three inhale off twenty one targeted so sixteen places that he allowed then. It was given bush at ninety eight point nine. The fourteen completions hail out Twenty two targets steven nelson than ninety seven Of heathen on eight targets that the quarterback ryan ninety seven ninety eight targets that year. He was faced with fifty seven percent. Then you got marcus allen. There ninety three point three percent. Then you've got swims. At ninety point. Nine percent on older writing percentage And then you sort of go down to kevin sautin with sony non-point i james pierre. Seventy two james peo- visits yet one target. I just thought i'd throw. I mean there purely because it's been all to they're gems. Pierre as light heightened seventy five point nine. now that's incredible that's very locked down and that's when people talk about your height and wildly better in an outlook down corner age. Thirty one thirty two season that sort of shows at their trill edmund sydney point and that sorta sure whoa snaps. That edmonds had his first couple of years when he was playing across the different safety roles. This on this show up on show up minka sixty five point seven which expected hilton sixty one sir but obviously is now gonna stop what fifty six point two spo wayne fifty one point four and this is why having gone robert splaine when it shaved exclusive rights free agent contract. He soared beneficial for the pittsburgh steelers in debt inside linebacker position and then it was alex. Smith believe on alex smith and plays the face over. Five targets had the best quarterback rating study. Five point two. Now that's obviously helped buys inception massively. It's helped by. He's yards per completion being Within a lot of the article guys you know an equally. It's it's very much around the fact a lot of the yards and he faced came through the air So that's pretty interesting. But i just showed up because you get this. Get the understanding that outside linebackers and allenbach is not how they're being targeted or trying to be exposed actually pretty well against the poss. They actually did pretty well against the pasta. The writing in terms of what that looks like. But at the same time a marcus allen allowing ninety three point three a steven nelson allowing ninety seven ninety seven when a quarterback rating when he had ninety eight targets thrown way. Lane hundred thirty five. This is what one of those guys normal rostov. And this is why the other guy really shouldn't be on the roster and skinny and still born in a number of undrafted rookie free agents. They brought in a guy. Like train would dropping on the seven basil. It's almost tell.

"Did you find the numbers. Oh yeah. I got i got him. So you wanna know how much roberts plane was. Blitzed he was he. How many times he. Let's keep here the way i keep raising it. I'm like yeah man. He was blitzed. That's not that's not. What how many times he blitzed. Okay not blitz okay. Thirty tight ties with robert liston. Twenty man he was he was like man every thirty. He was settled a four hurries. One quarterback knocked down two sacks and seven pressures so only three more than devon bush on the season. But i mean a lot more production. You know not a result and vince williams new everyone. And plus vince williams as a fantastic blitzer. So like this is what excites me about this season. Even as much as michael beckon. I talked about getting young stud inside. Linebacker play next to bush and be that like more athletic freakish. Athlete fitzwilliam style hitter Like a zaven collins fans on. We've got those guys we got guys. That are good enough right. We've got vince. Williams and roberts blaine we can lead to having bush played back splaine one of my favorite things in an interview. They asked him. What does he wanted to work on if they were going to have them work. More run support for things and he said the steelers said. Don't worry about your weaknesses. Focus on your strengths. Focus on coverage puzzling. And i was just. I was like because that's what they do. You take guys you take what they do and they do well and you put them in that situation to do it. Yup that's better after. Do get better yourself out in those areas. And that's how we're gonna use you so alongside. devin bush. Expect to see. Roberts blaine in passing downs in passing situations. If they're an. And i don't to be like roberts bylanes. The nickel linebacker in venice williams is the three is the the base seven base set inside linebacker. I don't want to go because if you're facing a team that passes a ton out of heavy sets or you're facing a team that runs a lot out of trips. You may switch that up. You may say you know what we want williams and on nickel and made against someone else like a baltimore you may say we want robbers lane in there when they do heavy sets. If they're throwing out of heavy such you. You may want that. So to me like it's more vince. Williams is gonna focus on blitzing Short zones he's going to be your run guy roberts bylanes going to be the guy in man more better in man ag better. On passing doubts. I have so many follow up questions. It's not funny. I'm gonna ask what. I what i wanted to quick answer. A yes or no. Will you see bush. Williams inspe- elaine all the field at the same time. Twenty twenty one. Yes okay you think that they could possibly do that all right. I was curious last year. They did all three. He didn't have the inside linebackers when they went. Big three outside linebackers this year. They don't have the outside linebackers they've sidelined and they have a guys to do it. Assuming they're healthy now. Speaking of being healthy you we talked about the steelers taking players and taking what they do well and putting them in that situation for them to have more success is by doing that. Which i think is is is really what you wanna do but this is the nfl and we all know that stands not for long when it comes to players in their career and stuff like that and you deal with injury like me. Coaching high school. I could do time because i base. It was rare when i when i was losing players all the time because of injury. It it it it. It's not the same speed. It's not the same physicality th these grown men out there flying at each other. That are the most you know elite athletes in the world. That are doing this. There's going to be injuries that occur if the steelers are constantly taking players and building to their strength. Does that create more of a problem when someone goes down for injury and you have someone else that has to replace them. Is that what we saw. In twenty twenty that has the as the injuries began to mount up for the steelers that things that they had been doing all season. They couldn't do the same things because they didn't have the same players with the same stretch. Absolutely absolutely and the big thing is they have plans to cover for people right. They have ways to shift people and cover for him. When you see that run dry is win. Three cornerbacks are out when you're missing or or you have both hayden and nelson out. That's not good. We don't have to backup starting our corner bush use same time. Or if you have your all three of your linebackers out they could cover for bud dupree and they said they were able to cover last year for bud dupree and devin bush both being now. That's incredible. They kept it going it was. You could argue that defense. Yeah joe haden being out his well when the playoffs is what kind of fell apart. When you had alex. Smith joe haden devon bush knew that it yeah it was just too many holes so yeah and i mean and that's going to be a problem. Whatever people to injury no matter what. But i mean that's why so many times people are like. Oh well they talked about. Oh do you josh. Last year people were like no. It was the year before two thousand and nineteen right before benn got hurt or do you want. Do you want to josh jobs as your number two quarterback because he could come in and do something different like. We saw week seventeen last year. Or do you want someone that does. You don't have to have a whole different system when a quarterback steps out for a little bit other other teams have had the same problem where you say that quarterback might not fit the backup. Because if something happens we'd like to someone that at least has similar style similar strengths. You're always going to be dealing with that. So you need to say i think inside linebacker for the steelers is if you're talking about devin bush coming back is where you have the the most gain versus the loss of any absolutely. Yeah if you're talking about him coming back and you also have to remember with outside linebacker if you're saying well you didn't have budget pre for five games the last five games. How much of a loss is he because they had. They didn't have him for for six games out of the season. But we knew what we there was enough of bud. Dupree and twenty twenty two hit more than halfway there to know what it was so We got some quarterback here before we go the corners that you think yup so steelers to move on from steven nelson..

steven nelson vince williams robert liston six games michael beckon five games nelson two sacks Last year last year devin bush Roberts blaine hayden roberts blaine vince this year Dupree Williams roberts seven pressures

Or you're a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I'm gonna go ahead and break it down. Moments are really okay. If you don't know the Pittsburgh Steelers they lost tonight. So who else? Bangles. They lost 27 to 17. We're gonna talk about that in a second. Big shout outs to super producer Stew Kovacs and a big shout outs to everybody who participated called Tweeted Texted me, Message me all that good stuff and the first half of the show. It's real simple. Confine me online. All social media is at J. R. Sport brief. Thank you to everybody listening on our local CBS sports radio affiliates across North America. If you're listening on the app the free radio dot com at Thank you If you want a smart speaker. Thank you. If you're in your car if you're at work the truck Thank you. Appreciate you. Let's get down to business. The phone number here is well 855 to 1 to four CBS and obviously Moving here. Into the second half of the show. Have to talk to you about the disaster. That you might have just heard on the radio. I need to have a conversation with you about a quarterback. One. Fortunately, Looks like a 38 year old mummy. And that man's name is Ben Rafel is Burger as I just told you, the Steelers. Their record falls to 11 and three They legitimately have a one game lead. I will say this again. This is 2020 folks. The Pittsburgh Steelers have a one game lead. Over the Cleveland Browns as we head into the playoffs. They have a game remaining against those Cleveland Browns. They also have a game against the Indianapolis Colts, too. You know I'm not a don't favor them in the playoffs, but they're certainly competitive. I believe they're underrated. So things are going to get any easier here for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They lost tonight to the Bangles 27 to 17. I mean, the Cincinnati Bangles basically trotted out. Uh, eighth string quarterback. Ryan Finley went out there. Only through for 89 yards and had it such down. He ran for 47 the score as well. And the Steelers, couldn't they? I don't think they had a first down. Until, like the second quarter. The Steelers were down to the Bangles 17 to nothing at halftime. And then the injuries just keep on coming for the Steelers. Fullback Derrick What Goes out with a concussion. Eric Ebron comes down on his back. He's out, he had to get carted off. The defense's been banged up. It's like every week somebody new goes down. It goes Devin Bush. They goes, But Dupri there goes Roberts. Blaine. Thank God you guys traded for Avery Williamson? By the way, is still learning the offense. This was ugly. The third consecutive loss. For the Pittsburgh Steelers. Still one of the best defense is in the league. Despite those numbers now going up, Come on. Lost to Washington. 23 to 17. Lost the Buffalo 26 to 15. And tonight. Loss to Cincinnati, 27 to 17. Both the offense and the defense are trending. In opposite directions. And for weeks, I told you You know you could take a look at the Steelers scene. When are you going to get help with run game? Where you going to get help with run game? Tonight. Okay. Benny Snow gave you 84 yards. Big deal with big when, when Big Ben Rob Bliss Berger is coming up short. I looked at one of the interceptions while I'm broadcasting here on air and he's He's kind of just throwing a ball like, okay, modest will throw it. Who cares? And there's an interception. Tonight. He throws 38 passes. He completes 20 of them 170 yards for one touch down in that interception that I just at least try to describe to you. And, of course, something that he's done for a few weeks now. Been robbed Bliss Berger has has taken the blame. Listen. I just felt like they were gonna take away some of that Chinese stuff. So we want to take some shots down the field and the disconnect is probably just me not making it happen. I would say that I'm not consistent enough which effects Often because the ball's in my in every place. True. And tonight, Ben Raffles Burger did suck. Wouldn't totally pin everything on him. I wouldn't blame him. Would take a look at past weeks and say Ben Rafel is Burger. Despite not playing up to par. I wouldn't say it was all his fault. I mean, it was a few weeks ago. And I said, OK, well, let's see what the Steelers do. They most certainly are the second best team in the A F. C. And now things have started to fall apart. It would not surprise me. What the two teams that they have to play that remain in Indianapolis and then also Cleveland. I wanna be surprised if the Steelers fell to 11 and five It wouldn't surprise me now. At this point. If Cleveland Won the division. If the Ravens started comma. Moving and nudging. Folks out the.

"Not just against us but against tight ends and running backs because there's a reason. The steelers played vince williams on his side. As we all know. Joe haden gets interceptions. Jumping those short out routes from the slaughter from tight ends or running backs he makes plays on those balls last game. We lost washington. Joe haden went down. They went straight at vince williams without route. Because when joe haines in there he doesn't have to worry about those hayden jumps. Those terrell edmonds covers deep and williams just has to worry about the middle of the field with joe. Haden now cameron sutton was was following. Those guys not jumping those routes and they absolutely targeted that area of the field. And that's how they have their Jd mckissic or wherever they're running back you know nobody is. He's not a big name. He's not a huge threat but he seventy yards on us. Because we really couldn't couldn't stop it with joe haden out there so joe joe. Hayden is important for the entire the entire defense. He's one of the most important defenders on this team. Now dan another guy on your bills offense dead single terry. of course. i believe zack. Moss is behind him. Well what a what a singletary done in your two and as he been able to evolve in take his game to a to a new level. I you know he actually hasn't yet Which which was a bit of a surprise. He looked really promising last year. Kind of Overtook frank gore before the end of the year The bills replaced gore with. Zack moss in the draft. This year but I think because josh allen has taken that next step this is a very pass. Happy offense now it used to be ground and pound and they just are not anymore Single terry has had trouble finding running room He's turned on a little bit in the last couple of weeks but probably the first half of the season he did not look good Zack moss is also. You know it's turning it up but he's still not quite how good he used to look when he was in college So the the running game for the bills is not very impressive. And if the steelers can find a way to make alan uncomfortable pressure him making make some bad throws the bills are not very balanced. And that's one way that the steelers could try to attack the bills make josh allen uncomfortable. Now jeffrey the steelers of course like we talked about earlier. Those are running backs onto the backfield. Is what killed the steelers a week ago. Is there any way they can stop dining. Say johan's the lineup is. Is that something the scheme might be able to figure out or are they just going to be gashed by running back. So your long. With roberts bolinao roberts blaine is our best. Running back covers linebacker. He is great at it. He's a fantastic. Green dog birther. He's good at getting out there. And he's he's great changing directions end zone and on on the He's great covering linebacker covering running backs. He's out he'd probably not playing joe haden. We don't know if he is out. Yeah we're gonna have serious problems with bags coming out of the backfield. That deva single terry could be that guy. You could see tight end tyler. Kroft of the big mistake would be taking us out of nickel taking us out of bigger sites in putting receivers on the field but then to joan is there. I mean you're you're putting justin lane out there who just forgot to cover people. Yesterday forgot how to do zone assignments and saw the plays like he was really struggling and they were running a whole bunch of concepts at him that he has wasn't ready. For if joe higgins out. Yeah everything's a problem and that's something you're going to have to watch out because the bills run. I think more four wide receiver sets than any other team in the league. They love to spread it out and they will throw passes and screenplays out of the backfield to so It it's a team that likes to outsmart you and try to make those defenders think and absolutely they have to watch out for that. I think what's going to come down to it is. Can they make enough pressure with their fronts. Seven to throw the bills off balance or do they just not have the pieces to them now. Dan boone when we look this match up to Steelers and bills back your sunday night. Football is this become like a premier game in the nfl. Is this something we can expect for years in the future. That steelers bills is one of those big time games man. I'd love to see that. I mean just drive down the throughway and there you go Obviously the steelers contend every single year like clockwork. I mean even last year it was duck. Hodges time to shine and so it didn't have quite the same appeal but in its own way. It was still like a really fun game to see with all those defensive plays and i would love to see that kind of lake erie brotherhood Of some of these teams clustered in that in that region. Really showing up end. You know showing that there's more to the nfl than the nfc east out there for broadcast. Goodness yeah there's been quite a few of those games jeffrey dan. Dan mentioned it dodges a year ago that game essentially ended the steelers playoff hopes last year when the steelers of the bills it is this a revenge game by any means. Do you think It's potential that the steelers might have a little a little extra in the tank because that this team that basically the year last year. I don't know i. I don't i don't think so. This is such a different season than that was the i. I don't think any of that. Any of that really carries over and this game doesn't have that level importance. I don't think to either team like there. Were both pretty pretty secure. Where if you lose this game while it hurts but it's not like it's not your season's over it's not. It's not a big deal but it should. It should be a good game. I mean it's a big game just because of the teams that are in it. I think i. I saw something where it's like. The highest. winning percentage of for two sunday night for sunday nineteen Sunday night matchup in december like ever december It's just they're both just went in. Yeah and that makes for like a five star matchup in to those guys. Dan on your defensive side davis white and josh norman. Cornerback deal fresh to this year. At how they looked up playing on opposite sides so in the case of white. I mean last year all pro outstanding season just incredible This year Is not at the same degree I think he's also turning it up the last few weeks. That's kind of been the theme for the bills lately He he has three interceptions in the last four weeks and teams are not throwing at him very much. He's kind of on his island at this point But he's a playmaker and he he just has that clutch gene in him. So you're you always have to watch out for him The number two corner opposite him is kind of been a hazy spot. A they wanted to start. Josh norman But he's hurt his hamstring. Like three times this year. You also got covid So this point. He's not the starter anymore. The bills are rolling with levi wallace. Who's been the start of the last couple of years. And he's doing that job. He kinda got picked on the forty niners but not enough to really affect the outcome but that is one of the weaker links. If you're going to be attacking the defense at your best bet is to stay away from white. Now if the steelers. Have to throw the ball. Jeffrey to To knock off the bills. Are they going to start replacing receivers. That can't hold on the balkis. Obviously drops have been an issue Sixteen total drops. The last two weeks is up to is out. What is going to come down to if guys can.

"What this season last year when the Sean gets back The last great game saw him play with the opener of last season against Washington. Are we really going to expect a big jump when the two of them get back? He's actually played better with no name receivers. And he has when they've been also Charles. Bottom line is it's going to be very weird. The organization has failed. Carson Wentz is what you're saying. That's what I'm hearing well. I think the organization has tried to supplement it, but you also have to remember. A lot of what we're talking about is because Jason Peters. How old they drafted Andre Dillard. He got her. You know Peter's They moved back to tackle. He got hurt. There's a kind of injury now he's on I r. Jason Peters branded the injury list is off the charts Its basic laws. Acker two Mile Sanderson, you know, so so when I look at the organization, I don't think that they fail. Could could you make a case that maybe instead of drafting Jalen hurts in the second you go for some other help? Yes, You can make that case. Can you make the case? It is Jalen rigor. The guy you wanted in the first they like him. Okay, I get all that. But they tried to supplement Put things around. But if guys air dinged the league has made it through has been Kelsey connected on the offensive line. Yeah, Charles Now I don't know how you you finagle this because you actually the one team this week. You know Nance in Rome or technically the one team. They have the film to the New England But you have don't want Teo. You have the game, though. I'm talking about the game the game. I'm not the one I'm talking about. I'm talking about the game that you have, or you have. Pittsburgh, Tennessee, two of the three undefeated teams left in the National Football League. Hanson. Romo have San Francisco in New England, which would be interesting, but the game that you want to see this weekend is the one that you have in Tennessee is getting done. Old school Derrick Henry we talked about is no big backs anymore. Running back is devalued. The hell he is there. Henry is unbelievable. I mean, he's he's in the top three of my MVP right now because of the impact that he has in Pittsburgh. I mean, they might be the best team in football right now. I'm loving what you just said about Derrick Henry? Because we keep about devaluing in this nothing. I know a bunch of guys who, if it's iffy if you make it back the week that you played Derek Kenin reason a lot of guys going for another week, and that's not a knock business. This reality because if you go and try and hit 2 50 like that, it could set you back another month. Yeah, that's who this guy is. And and and we're going to talk about it this week, and this is what I thought of it, And I don't know what you guys think. But in that franchise history now, okay? E. J to K. I'm taking out of this argument because body type It was Earl Campbell, Eddie George. And now this big monsters here. That's what you're talking about. Okay, This is where it's getting historic in what he's doing. He needs more time, right? He needs more years. He needs to keep stacking these seasons together. But he stays on this kind of run. We're talking seriously historic proportions of the best backs. We've seen play football, and he catches out back a little bit better than anyone would ever give them credit for, and then you flip it over to Pittsburgh. Loss of Devin Bush inside getting ready for this game. We'll see if Robert Blaine holds up what they try and do with that. But the beauty would put Pittsburgh has Tyson a Lulu is really come on its nose yet in Camp Hayward yet into the font to it his back full force. They've been keeping those linebackers clean and letting him run to the ball. Make play, you know. Listen, man, I mean and and Tennessee lost. Tallulah Luan. There will tell apartment. Yeah, now, hombre Lo, who's going to start? I believe it left tackle. His first play or second play in the game. After Laurent gets her J J Watt beaten strip sack it helps used in on their comeback, So that's not the same because member Isaiah Wilson, their first round pick who was supposed to start at right tackle. Because of the big He's been cove. It twice, you know, wasn't ready to go. No, I don't think that he steps in either. So I think, Sambre Low place left tackle. That is Kelly plays right tackle those trying keep beat you up. Let's face it. You lose a want a three time pro boy, That's a big deal. No doubt. We'll listen, man with road for you. You know, I know we exchange e mails and stuff when you got the job that has been great to me, Both of you, and I really appreciate that being been so welcoming. And so Dyson You're right. We're lucky We have a great game. But Vicki said it about one team My way. No. Are. We don't know about that. Well, promo and Tony got that got downgraded alleged Ueno. Our spot I like I'm like a alright try harder. Being number two number two's not bad. There's always a chance to eventually go to number one, but number two is a good starting spot in Birdman. So we have model the time. So easy to work with these great He is phenomenal question. Evans phenomenon blood beyond truly him. That's also make great to have you back on this show. Have a great call. Pittsburgh, Tennessee Sunday, CBS. Thanks a lot. Girls keep their would be good. Thanks a lot for you, too, as well. And I love the fact you get Derrick Henry thought the FDP rate man he should be. He's one of my favorite players in the NFL right now. You go. All right, Charles, you know So, uh, That is a big game man. And that's that's one of those revealing games, too. I want to see But we'll have all or we to dissect this. But then I You know, I pick Pittsburgh not the Ravens to win the North. You, Noah Pitts, pick pick Pittsburgh. Nobody else to represent the eh have seen the Super Bowl. Now. I also big Dallas throw that the incident that has no shot none. But I'm liking my Steelers pick, but it surprised me. The Titans win. No, because I've got a lot of respect for them, and Vrabel is a great coach. What he does how we manipulate some of the loopholes in the in the rule book. He's done it a few times. Now. Four saves time anyway, We're getting a little bit off track, but going to be a lot of fun and obviously taken. I'll set that up throughout the week and get you set up for week. Seven. Let's be coast into Almost the middle part of the NFL season. Let's get the update from Bob. You, sir. Come back with the blast. Bobby's update right now. Here he is..

"We are updating a story from our archives. California reports. Health correspondent April Dim Bosque first produced the audio documentary Soundtrack of Silence in 2017 and since then Paramount Pictures has optioned the story to turn it into a movie. That's a California report at 4 30 here on This is marketplace. I'm Kai resolve back at the end of March, beginning of April ish when quarantine got riel businesses, some of them anyway started giving their essential workers hazard pay. Typically a $2 an hour bump. Here We are four months later, And even though the virus is raging in big parts of this country, hazard pay has mostly disappeared. And estates or stepping in Pennsylvania, for instance, establish a grant program this week for businesses to offer bonuses for workers in health care and transit, food, manufacturing and retail as well. On the theory that workers risking their health in a perilous economy deserve something. Who should pay for it. Marketplaces Kristen Schwab has that one. 16 bucks an hour. That's how much Rashad Lloyd was making at Total line and Maurren Virginia in March. Now he's making 14 because his hazard pay expired in April. And he feels pretty stuck. It's not like there are a lot of other jobs out there. There is absolutely no alternative right now, and a lot of these companies understand that there's no alternative. At the beginning of the pandemic Cos We're worried employees wouldn't show up to work. But now the power dynamics have changed. Employers are more easily finding workers. And so they're decreasing the incentives to bring workers into the workplace. Manhattan teaches labor sociology at the university at Buffalo. She says, Cos. Also feel like they don't have to pay extra because stay at home orders have lifted. And aside from the Amazons and Kroger's of the world, a lot of businesses can't afford to give hazard pay forever. Business owners need to be supported by governments. I mean, this cannot be an employer enterprise. So what would that support look like? Uncle Halit teaches labor law at the University of Chicago. Really, there are three options, she says Governments could force companies to pay up, though that means business is already struggling, would continue to foot the bill. Or they could offer incentives like tax breaks or fund hazard pay programs themselves. And a government mandate would do something else, create rules and guidelines. The definition of what we consider to be hazardous work. And what is hazardous work has changed before the pandemic, we would have never called the grocery store workers job dangerous. And now that we've reopened much of the economy with a virus still a threat, you could argue hairstylists and restaurant servers are doing dangerous work, too. I'm Kristen Schwab for marketplace. It can be a movie theater. It can be a restaurant. It can be a coffee shop. The problem this summer is that many of those places are closed and that has left city scrambling. Instead of careful planning. Now we're getting all sorts of at Hak measures. Phoenix has used its convention center as a cooling center, Philadelphia parked city buses and kept the running. New York City is just giving away air conditioners. But some places aren't doing anything because of state orders Mark Steam in a geography professor at Cal State, Chico worked on the city's extreme heat plan. She goes cooling centers. They cancelled that programme and we're really just running without anything right now, and that's a problem. Chico already was strapped and recently gained around 20,000 residents who have been displaced by wildfires. As these disasters kind of stacked up on top of each other that they just become more more difficult for a community like ours. For now, they're distributing cold water to homeless camps and low income residents as temperatures climb above 100 degrees while trying to stop clothed 19 from spreading in the community and planning how to evacuate as wild fires break out.
