Former Cincinnati Reds Announcer Thom Brennaman Lands New Job
"A hit some controversy this Yeah, He got a little bit of trouble. About four months ago, He was on the air announcing a Redd's Royals game, and he used a gay slur while he thought his mic was off, which we all know Mike's are never off. Doesn't make it right. But he's actually been rehired to announce games again. Good, and it's just four months later. It's just, you know, As soon as the incident happened on air, he said he went right on and apologize. And he said, I don't know if I'm ever gonna put headsets on again. He knew the severity of what happened. And pretty much thought His career was over. But today it has been announced that the Roberto Clemente League has hired him to do play by play for the 2021 season. Oh, yes. Oh, not even Major league baseball. This is down in Puerto Rico. Yes. Oh, I say. Okay, well, studio It was passion, I guess. Yeah. What? Listen, I mean,

"Homed in on him right away. So yeah the pittsburgh. Pirates were Lead i think they're. Gm was branch rickey. Who is the guy who had scouted. Jackie robinson got him onto the dodgers now. He worked for the pirates so he ended up getting his hands on roberto clemente and brought him to the pirates. It's so apparently when They found out or when clemente found out that he had been drafted by the pirates. He's down in puerto rico and he said later on that he had. He didn't really know where pittsburgh was. He had been excited to play for new york. Because there's a big puerto rican community in new york and all of a sudden he sent off to pittsburgh doesn't know where it is and doesn't really know anybody so this is kind of as his entree into America but it actually was even rougher than that. Because i he started out I guess i'm pittsburgh's Minor league team or in. That's what it was. It was in spring. Training down in fort myers beach florida And he came face to face with the the stark reality of of basically jim. Crow south in the fifties First thing when he got to america and he he was one of the reasons. I said earlier the civil rights activists because he did not take very kindly to that and bristled in in railed against it from the outset. Yeah he didn't he didn't have any He doesn't have any frame of reference for this like he came from puerto. Rico were this wasn't a thing. He was of african descent so to americans he was a black man to him. He was puerto rican. He was caught between two worlds and didn't understand why he had to stay in a different hotel or eating a different restaurant than his white Teammates and so this really upset them and and what upset him even as much was how his other black teammates on the team understood it in just basically had to take it because they were afraid. If they caused a ruckus that it would be sent back down to the minors and he was just like you shouldn't be deferential. Like what's going on in this country. And he he would speak to the sporting press about this stuff in the sporting press either would just ignore his comments about that or actually yes they would ignore his comments about that and they would just talk about whatever he said about the game but then to kind of heap This sense that he was an outsider and outside outsider. There wasn't respected because he was looked down upon because of his race and his his Origin They would quote him phonetically in the press so when he said you know I think there was a headline. That famously said like i get a hit. I feel good but they spell it out like i get heat h. e. t. is how they spelled hit. I feel good. That was a headline in the pittsburgh news papers after a really big game and he found that extremely demeaning And actually really kind of framed. The way that he felt about america Yeah framed how he felt about america. And why don't forget like puerto. Rico was you know by this time it was an american territory have been for quite a while. So people in puerto rico had long considered themselves american people in america. Increasing sitter puerto ricans. They consider them and they. The roberto clemente was treated just like any other person from puerto rico which was not very well back. Then yes so. His reputation started to develop as a loner. It's very moody player The pirates were really bad team. I don't think we mentioned that At the time just terrible like one of the worst teams baseball. He didn't catch on in his first few years. They're either Think in his first five seasons the only hit over three hundred one time and a lot of this was due to injury. He had a car accident that hurt his back. So his back was all jacked up for a while He had other you know injuries along the way and he would. He wasn't shy about talking about it. He would complain to the manager complain to the press about his injuries. And this baseball still kind of this way or most sports are actually as you kinda. Don't take that stuff public. You don't wanna be seen as someone who Either fakes injury because they don't wanna play or who complains about it too much right so he. He didn't have the best reputation early on because a lot of this stuff. Yeah i know he was thought to be complainer. A hypochondriac moody Abrasive egotistical. And that was something. that like. That's indisputable as egotistical part. Because he was. He knew that he was playing better than he was getting credit for it and it ticked him off because he knew the reason he wasn't getting credit for was because he didn't act the way that the white sporting press expected him to act and they didn't like him for so they didn't really give them any any credit. They actually withheld credit. That was definitely do him for the way he was playing. But like you said. I mean it took a few years for him to start to catch on but even after he did which i began in the nineteen. Sixty world series When the pirates went from. I don't know if they went from worst to first but it was pretty close to something like that He was he was passed over as the world's series mvp I think like a a lefty relief. Pitcher got more votes than he did despite him being one of the clear. Heroes of that series And he really was not happy about that and it really kind of created this. This lifelong animosity with the sporting precedent. Already been brewing. But that one to him showed that he they were basically working against them at that point. Yeah and i think nineteen sixty was a pretty bittersweet ear because it was his breakout year If this status right. Dave says his average never dropped below three hundred. Yeah then that means he that means he was hitting three hundred in game one which is pretty remarkable To start out that hot and to maintain it over the course of a year right but if in playing winter ball in the caribbean just a couple of weeks before that it would make sense you know. Yeah and he You know they won the world series. Which is a big big deal in pittsburgh. But he didn't feel like he was getting his do like you said so. He didn't go off and celebrate with his fans He kind of went off to himself he was happy but it said The quote was. I'm happy but not but unconcerned with all the fanfare is what reporter said and he just wanted to get back home to puerto rico so he could use his world series bonus money to buy a house for his mother and he was loved there. So you know he wanted to get back to where he was Cherished in any did when he went back to puerto rico he was a national hero and the press like followed him everywhere he went and the kids loved him and he bought a big cadillac and mentor all the kids. So it's not like he went back like Like elvis in just sort of live high on the hog like he did go back a hero but he really really got involved with the community right away. Yeah he kept playing he would mentor little kids. Who were Learning to play sports in that actually became one of his dreams as he wanted to Make enough money and get big enough to build a sports complex a sports city or See dod deportes bad If i can pat myself on the back for that one where kids could learn to Play but also you know like you didn't have much of a role model kind of place you could find a role model to and not just play baseball but also play basketball or whatever sports You wanted to play. And i think that that was at the very least on his mind back. Then if not like one of his stated goals in his life by the time nineteen.

"Network I'm your host Kevin Hollick is episode number two, Sixty, eight you guys haven't done so yet check us out on social media had to facebook head to twitter check out the GS MCC baseball podcast as well as the. PODCAST network linked in. Instagram facebook across the board baseball is not the only guest within the network. Actually there's upwards of thirty even more than that. It's anything you would like I mean if you can come up with a topic, there's a podcast for you whether it's books, music television movies, other sports. Music did I say that already I don't even remember there's so many broadcasts that if he can't find one that's entertaining. There's something wrong with you. That's all I'm going to say but check that out go into the search bar wherever you're listening to this podcast type in G S MC and the library will pop up and you'll have a lot of great content a lot of my co workers within the podcast network. So we certainly appreciate it but dive in now to counter the news and notes segment of the baseball podcast here today a couple of different things I wanted to touch on first of all is the news that Major League. Baseball has released the quote unquote film room, which is millions of old video clips every pitch for Major League baseball over the last three years as well as highlights dating back all the way to nineteen, twenty nine and you as the consumer are able to put together a package of up to I believe it is four different highlights and you can share those across any social media platform. So baseball is starting to finally hear the feedback in starting to understand the power of social media and the ability that this has to. Grow. The audience and sway members to become bigger fans because before they used to crack down on this all the time. If you had any sort of video online, they would shut it down. They would come at you even pitching Ninja on twitter had to go to battle, and he's basically just like guys. I'm trying to champion your product in show how difficult it is and how good these guys are at what they do and you're shutting down for it. I'm trying to partner with you while asking nothing in. Return. But spread the word of your product, and now I do think that this film room is a little bit internally focused. Still I understand the benefit of being able to put together these highlights you can't manipulate the system as much as I would like I. Know I still have to continue to dive around and learn more about it as I'm diving through highlights content learning, how to clip things back and forth short and the clips edit the clips be able to rotate damn. Do certain things edit the videos filters? Tax Things along those different lines that are what make other social media platforms stand out amongst the crowd of many. So if Major League Baseball can partner with some of these platforms I think this will continue benefited as well, but it is certainly a great step in the right direction I I mean I've come on here a couple of times and talked about how baseball needs to partner with online media and be more willing to understand that world and utilize it to be successful, and this is a good first step I think this is kind of. A lowering of the curtain. So to speak that will allow this to evolve. Because I do think baseball will find success and I do think the reaction will be positive. I. Don't know how many people will be sharing all of these highlights or be watching old videos, but I'll certainly find it entertaining or if you're having a conversation with your friends or your family over a couple of drinks you're outside it's now fall time over the weekend and you want to watch an old highlight of Willie mays or Roberto Clemente who we talked about in that. First Segment Jackie. Robinson some of these guys who pave the way for today's baseball players, and now you can do that. Now you don't have to rely on Youtube and a lot of older video I mean like i. said going all the way back to nineteen twenty nine. That's a long time ago. That's ninety years of highlights that are now available in this film room, and if you really want to take some time and go down a rabbit hole, which I would suggest because it is fun and they do have a lot of video that I've. Never. Seen before, and if you wanna put together videos of triple plays or videos of the final out of the world series or videos of complete game, no hitters the final pitch the final out of those types of instances guys who have hit four home runs in a game and kind of put those altogether in a clip and then share them online. You can do that. But the length of video does become a bit longer for some of the newer niche social media platforms that are come and go come and go a lot of high turnover. Sex Videos, things along those lines, but again, good first step for Major. League baseball certainly an improvement on what they've been doing. I can't fault them for that. Allowing any sort of video moving forward is certainly an upgrade over what things have been in the past but check that out MLB film room just type into Google you gotta sign up with an email. Of course, they wanna, you know email you to try to get you to buy something later. But as of now the film room is free and you should check it out if you're listening out there but. This week we also had let's see here I'm trying to remember which exact day it was. Was it today's Thursday Tuesday I? Think it was on the eighth. If we had the third longest at-bat in the history of Major League Baseball, it was between cardinals, Catcher Matt leaders and many twins left handed pitcher caleb fee bar Thi- bar I. think that's how you say it. So nineteen pitch battle I, it was pretty impressive to watch Wieder said fouled off fourteen. Pitches during the nineteen pitch performance before feel bar got him to fly out to the center field warning track and the bases were loaded at this point. So Theo Bar was able to get out of the jam and the cardinals were up five to two in that ain't pitches ten through fifteen. We're all fastballs that leaders was able to foul off into. Empty. Busch Stadium Number Sixteen was a high slider and then seventeen eighteen nineteen back to fastballs after that. But. Thalberg through ten consecutive three, two pitches into the strike zone. That's very impressive. I mean those are high leverage high pressure pitches because you certainly don't WanNa walk in a run in this instance in the bottom of third already down five to two. In this game, you don't want to give up any more. So that's a fascinating stat. They're being able to locate whether it's control or command ten pitches in zone in a row is a very impressive feat and looking at a tweet here from Sarah. Lang's she says, matter leader saw. Pitches. In his last plate appearance, there have been five thousand, four hundred instances this season of a player having at least four plate appearances a in a game and seeing fewer pitches than that. So a player total during the game seeing less than nineteen bitches. This happened over five hundred or five, thousand, four, hundred times and leaders did it in one play to parents? So.

"Statistic right in front of me, and of course, a lot of the statistics that we reference nowadays in Major. League. Baseball weren't as available or weren't used back during that time. So they tried to take today's analytics and apply them to looking at film or game play or don't even know exactly how they do it but his defensive metrics graded out extremely well, his base running metrics getting back to the triples him taking the extra base when the opportunity presented itself, I believe it was over. Fifty or sixty percent of the time. So the guy wasn't a speedster, but he knew how to run the basis and that led to him taking the extra base in stretching. Hey, double into a triple and one, hundred, sixty, six of those is very impressive and when I talked about defensive metrics as well he won twelve consecutive gold glove awards starting in one, thousand, nine, hundred, sixty. One. So from nineteen, sixty, one, all the way till his last year of Nineteen seventy-two, he was the gold glove winner in right field for the National League he led the National League in outfield assists five times during the curse of a career. So the guy had an absolute Canaan out in right field and since one thousand, nine, hundred, four, he ranked second in career assists as. A right fielder, he has a career two hundred and fifty five assists from right field, which is second all-time. So this guy just he did it all I mean he hit three seventeen, he hit triples let's look at his home run stats he he figured out how to hit home runs later in his career a lot of way or an easy way to put it is that Guys who get to the major leagues I you learn how to hit major league pitching and then you learn how to hit home runs against Major League pitching I mean case in point locally here is Alec bomb for the Philadelphia. Phillies. Former third overall pick who has come up hit right around three hundred put the ball in play. He's twelve for twenty-three with runners in scoring. Position but certainly hasn't lifted the ball out of the ballpark yet, and that will come with experience that will come with timing that will come with repetition, and that's what happened with Roberto Clemente and his first five years he had five, seven, four, six, four home runs but then from then on double digits every year and averaged upwards of almost twenty home runs he started getting to. Sixteen twenty three seventeen twenty nine was his career high in nineteen sixty six when he won the MVP award, he hit three seventeen, that year twenty, nine home runs. One hundred nineteen are be is he also had eleven triples and thirty one doubles. So what's that there? Quickly Sixty seventy one extra base hits across the board in one, thousand, nine, hundred, sixty, six, what a fantastic year. For Roberto in that year, he was a two time world series champion. To Go along with those twelve consecutive gold gloves, he also had fifteen all stars. He was named an all-star fifteen different times. That's very impressive throughout the course of eighteen years. He had four L. batting titles to go along with the nineteen sixty, six award he had three, fifty, one and nineteen, sixty, one, three, thirty, nine, and nineteen, sixty, four, three, fifty, seven, in one, thousand, nine. Hundred Sixty seven and three, twenty, nine in nineteen, sixty five to win the batting championship in those years very impressive. He also ranks once again putting in the new age sabermetrics into the old style of baseball. He ranked thirty seventh all time in wins above replacement or war according to baseball reference. So very, very high on the list during his prime one of the most complete players. I, heard Larry Bowa speak the other day and somebody asked him about the best baseball player. He's ever played against and he said it was hands down. So Clemente nobody was even close it's just I mean this guy if you really look at it from nineteen, we'll say sixty one or even nineteen sixty through the end of his career. So those twelve years he was an all star every year except for nineteen, sixty eight and the guy had two to ninety one that year. So certainly had the numbers he finished in the MVP top twenty every single year he had. Let's see one two. Three four top five finishes in MVP voting, and it's just let's look at some of the individual performances that really stand out here based on some research I've been able to do but nineteen, fifty six, he had an inside the park walk off Grand Slam, and apparently that is the only time in the history of Major League baseball it actually happened it was Let's see a historic trip nine, eight victory the pirates over the cubs and It was his first home run was also an inside the park home run. So he has the only inside the park walk off Grand Slam in the history of baseball up. A year later in nineteen fifty seven, he had a three homer, seven RBI performance, which was probably the most impressive offensive performance of Roberto Clementes career for five three Dinger's seven RBI's against the reds he had to to run shots, and then a solo homer in the ninth, the pirates did end up losing that game but of course, Roberto was a star nineteen, fifty, eight, he had. A three times three bagger Clemente became just the twenty eighth player in history to have three triples in one game which ties the modern era. So nobody has had four triples in one game. It seems here but Clemente is one of the gentlemen was able to have three of them in one game. He had a walk off hit in the All Star game in nineteen sixty one. To lead the National League to a five four victory, he basically, let's see Hank Aaron led off the inning Frank Robinson was there. So I stacked lineup but ultimately, your hero was were Roberto Clemente in the same year that he won the MVP, he also had the walk off winner in the All Star game. That's a pretty good summer if you're Roberto Clemente. Defensively in nineteen sixty nine, he made a crazy catch to preserve a no hitter one handed grab over the field fence. It's one of the best highlights and best catches that she'll see if you search over youtube and and kind of dive into some of these, you'll be able to find that one thousand, nine, hundred, Seventy Roberto Clemente night at three rivers stadium. They had this. They welcomed fans from Puerto Rico for the occasion. Obviously. Roberto. Was a hero for a lot of kids of Latino descent. Because Roberto Clemente after his passing in nineteen, seventy two was elected to the baseball hall of fame in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy, three, and he was the first Latino to be enshrined in the Major League Baseball Hall of fame. So everything that Jackie Robinson did in for for the African, American. Community Roberto Clemente was very similar idolized player for the Latino community. I know Alex Rodriguez has talked about idolizing Roberto Clemente and that's where I think baseball's doing a nice job and honoring him once a similar similar to Jackie Robinson because the has continued to evolve and obviously the influence of La Latino players in Puerto Rico and everybody has continued to grow across major. League Baseball and we've seen that with everybody from Puerto. Rico wearing number twenty one in honor of Roberto Clemente on Wednesday with the rest of Major League baseball wearing a patch and showing their love for Roberto Clemente also Major League baseball the MLB Network has a studio twenty one along with a studio forty two. So very much highly thought of in regards to Major, League baseball and just fascinating I. Mean The guy was an all star gold glove top fifteen MVP guy hit three twelve with seven home runs and sixty RBI. So yeah, our ten home runs and sixty RBI. So maybe the offensive power numbers were dropping at the age of thirty seven for the pirates. The Guy could still hit career three seventeen hitter thirteen hundred RBI is two hundred and forty home runs and exactly three thousand hits and of Cour- say a hero to the Latino community and just a model citizen for everything. Major League, baseball and. Great Great Athlete and a great great baseball player. But that'll wrap things up here for the first segment of the GSM baseball podcast brought to you by the. "A pirate for life. Steve Blass, who played with the great Roberto Clemente, It's a very special day. Not only the pirates but across Major League baseball because Puerto Rican players have the option to wear number 21 throughout the league. And the Pirates, of course, will be working all of the bucks. I believe we're gonna wear 21. It really started here and Vera Clemente, his widow. Just past at the end of last year, and I remember being there. I mentioned this early this morning when Neil Walker was playing with the Bucks, whose father Tom knew and play ball. This is a great story of people if people don't know it, and was supposed to be on that flight, Theo fated flight where they were helping Earthquake victims from Nicaragua and Roberto told Tom Walker Neil's dead. No, he was going to get on the plane, he said. You stay. I'll see you at the party was New Year's Eve party. And the rest is history. And so Tom gets very emotional. Can you imagine this night? So I was there at PNC Tour a vertical many night. Neil Walker's there. Vehicle. Many and the boys were there. And Neil hits a home run over the Roberto Clemente Wall. Perfection. You just can't make that stuff up part of the magic of baseball. Curious to hear Steve glasses, recollections of Roberto. It's going to be great to hear him again. "So if you want to have a little remembrance of Lou Brock and a couple of those teams, I would imagine that the guys calling the game will touch on that. The passing Of the legend. Another legend that went far too Soon. Buster was the late great Roberto Clemente and later this week, Major League Baseball is going to pay homage to him for a certain ethnic group of players, which I think is a great great thing. Can you kind of take us inside this particular story? Again. Our teammate Mollet Marley. Rivera was the first one to report this Major league Baseball is going to allow players from Puerto Rico, which is where Roberto Clemente was from. To wear number 21. Clementi's number on other players will have the opportunity to where some kind of a decal also with number 21 on it, But I really believe that this is you know another step toward that day when they retire his number 21 in the same way that they did that retired Jackie Robinson's 42 Clementi and historic Figure in baseball. And so revered that the sports humanitarian award is named for him. And there has been this growing. Ah, call for baseball to take that step. I think they feel like, well, we way have this other ward name form. But the fact that they're doing this and and the fact that I think we're going to see players really jump on this and celebrated. Ah, and then I did find it. Find a way to talk about comment. Ae and and remember Clementi. I think that they're just going to continue to build on this. At some point that number 21 will go up in the scoreboards everywhere around baseball. It stands to reason because he is one of the great as you mentioned humanitarians in the history of the game. In fact, that's how we ended up losing his life in that plane crash Thinking of others. And this week, Major League Baseball will be thinking of him. Buster only is the host of the Buster eyes. The host. Excuse. We have the baseball tonight five gassed. And he always brings it with us. Every single I get one from Buster going. Just got one more for you. But I'm only here for one day, man. I gotta get much as I can. So what do we think that the Mets are going to be sold? And is it any substance to the fact that air I felt like he was just there to raise the price for going Well, you know, I talked to him about the other day because there was a story that said that he can't remember what the word was that he was living or something like that. And he said, no, just, you know, I mean part of the process and let's face it, if you if you're in a bidding and you don't win it, then you're probably gonna have complaints or trades. I know that that happens every day in sports, but I think you know Alex. At some point, I fully expect that he's going to merge is a bitter for another team. Um, but boy, what a what a landscape changing. Ah, move for the Mets to go to new ownership, which is going to spend a lot more money. And for the first time, I think under Steve Cone, I think we're going to see the Mets go toe to toe with the Yankees. Have been for some of the best players in the game. Watch the Francisco indoor bidding in two winters. Those that will be a showdown. Syndergaard has to be something fun to be at the locks in the garden, you know, he probably thought he was 1 ft. Out the door one on a banana peel that it is the time of John surgery. Yeah, that And I think it would not at all surprised me of this winter if he saw Steve Cohen trying to announce his presence with authority and maybe go after J. T Reum youto, the All Star catcher of the Philadelphia Phillies. Indeed, Steve Cohen, huge hedge fund guy grew up a Mets fan. And if you take a look at Steve Cohen's bank account, he's not used to finishing second. Anybody other is a 10 billion more than any other owner. No, dad Boy. That's money. Yes, and he doesn't want to use that five year window that the Wilpons wanted to give him. He wants to take over. Right now, let me make sure I get this right. "Can you only had one of them? The station. Now, they'll look the love and tried to hang onto. The you know, what's weird though, you know, you loaned us your gold glove, and it was great to have in. What people have to understand is. It's actually just a baseball mitt then is spray painted gold. Like, Like, it's. it's. I mean, it's cool. But it's it's kind of a cheap, you know award. I mean, it's a great honor herald don't get me wrong. I think the actual trophy. They they they give you is just a glove, and then they get, you know, Russ stolen them, and then they spray pin. Well last night. Ward was was awarded Johnny Atlanta, right down. So let's see the Roberto Clemente where it looks like the Heisman Trophy. Well, I want it back in ninety one that gave me a ball. That was basically they silver bronze too. Come on get a high, isn't it? The Red Sox with two two outs in the you know, this ability they're hitting over four hundred with two ounce. And I I guess I I look at what Cora has done for this team. And what I love and that is put the bat on the ball. Don't try to you don't have to hit home runs. They're not relying on home runs here. And they're put the ball in play. And I I don't know if more teams are going to look at this and go. Oh, jeez. That's it does make more sense than striking out that you put the ball in play. And then things happen. What do you make of this strategy? It's not strategy. I guess, but it's just the ability to you know, put the ball in play with with two outs in runners in scoring position. Well, I I take full loss. That, you know, it's it's it's blending the new analytics and also the old school together. And I think we've gone through numbers and data are always constantly changing. Right. It changes are are thought process of of how we think about things so Alex comes from Houston ASO's who way out there with all the Olympics. But I think they're the first ones sit there and say take a pitch given account and lead league in strikeouts. Then they made the adjustment. We're gonna put the ball in play and they went to World Series. And I think analysts about that here. He had a quote last night. And that he said in the press conference to ten and thirty home runs and seventy Rb is you can't play for the Red Sox that doesn't get it with one hundred ninety five strikeouts. You can't play here. So I think what it's been accepted herald it that's the problem is baseball has accepted this as the new normal. Well, I hate it. I hate it. I know most people. Do the ball's gonna be play. And if you put the ball in play good things are gonna happen strike out. Not just another out you have no production. So I think there's team starting to see it when you have the team leading right? You know to in the World Series. I'm not gonna give it to them yet. Although I think you'll probably win it. And last year winter saying strikeouts is not the way you play. You put the ball in play. Maybe we're going to start to see this turn. And we'll see 'cause we gotta get the game back to putting the ball play. It just. HR safe travels to Los Angeles. We'll check in with you a little bit later on in the series. Thank you. Fran. Appreciate Harold Reynolds. He won three Gold Gloves. Yeah. Fritzy, no, offense or anything. But it's kind of a cheap award. It is like what you mentioned looking at the gold glove looked like cheap award. Yes. It's an amazing honored again. But when we all got it. We were like this is what they give them. Really, didn't you think it was actual gold glove again like it was a gold glove? Like when you tap on it, solid. It was a rust Olim high end restaurant. Yes. Because you could get a glove, and I could spray painted, and I could spray spray thing to baseball's. I think that we could probably construct a gold glove. It was a little more. It had the feel of like a more high end sixth grade art project, it was a little bit more art project that like somebody did that out in the garage..
