"Most people believe that the most historic thing the Pittsburgh pirates did in 1971 was win the World Series. However, history was made by the pirates back in September by starting an all black lineup. The first in Major League Baseball history, 24 years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, despite being a historic event, it largely went unnoticed as the newspapers were on strike, and the radio broadcast drew little attention to the event, not even mentioning it until the second inning, and the teams themselves not even knowing they had made history. The pirates won that game ten to 7, rennie's Senate, gene clines, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, many sanguine, Dave cash, Al Oliver, Jackie Hernandez, and Doc Ellis pitching. All these men made history that day and helped lead the pirates to win the 1971 World Series and outfielder Roberto Clemente became the first Latin American player to win the World Series MVP award. Dinesh Reveals the Effects of Musk Derangement Syndrome
"Let's turn to mister Elon Musk because he is causing the left to have a freak out. And it's a little bit interesting to think about why. Is it because, well, one thought it occurred to me yesterday and that is that Elon Musk has been really focused. He's freeing speech on the one side, but he goes, I'm really going to crack down on Twitter on pedophiles on pedophiles. And this too has freaked out the left. It's kind of interesting to see. I mean, is it because there's a substantial fraction of pedophiles in the cultural left as Elon Musk kind of nuking a wing of the left that doesn't, you know, they can't openly say, well, we're pedophiles. So what they do is they pretend I'm gonna be, I'm gonna be leaving Twitter on principle. It could be a secret reason for the leftist freak out. Here's Alyssa Milano, who, by the way, used to be a huge Elon Musk fan. I have found it fascinating. You're a couple of Milano tweets. I'm in awe of Elon Musk. And then she goes on to thanks Elon Musk and Tesla. Elon Musk you're amazing. She says that she could have dinner with four people. She picked Jesus Roberto Clemente John Lennon and Elon Musk. And then more recently, here's Alyssa Milano. I gave back my Tesla. I bought the Volkswagen. I love it. Now, what's so weird about this is first of all, she's turned on Musk. Why? Because evidently he's for free speech. That alone is enough to set her off. Number two, she buys, let's call it the Nazi car. Why? Because Vogue, if you want to talk about history, Volkswagen was started under the Nazi regime, it's in fact the word volk is a very fascist term volk means, of course, people and the Nazis who were socialists talked about the people's car, Volkswagen, the wagon of the people. So here's a list of Milana while she doesn't really know about her, but nevertheless, part of she has MDS Musk the arrangements syndrome.

"It's important to me to connect with the fans, but it's also important to protect my energy, whereas yesterday, I was able to completely let my guard down and connect with the fans. The only thing I had to do was protect my shoulder, but it was such a different experience because I'm still in the heart of my career. I think at this stage, I'm recognizing that it's going to end at some point. I'm not sure when, but you know, I just turned 39 and I'm much, much closer to the end than I am, I am even the middle of beginning. And so to me, I wanted another thing too. I want people to the fans to know who I am. It's a little different when you're a former player and you enter the crowd. You can sit in your seat and watch the game, and they're like, we didn't get to see you play. Whereas I'm walking around and there's voto jerseys, you know, there's people that watch me play just a month ago in live. So I don't know why it just appealed to me. And just watching a game, I got to sit with a couple fans for a bit, take it in, take in the angle. It was just, it was a really charming experience for me. We're talking to Joey Votto, second consecutive year. He's the reds nominee for baseball's prestigious Roberto Clemente, award. A couple of analysts at ESPN. A couple of very sharp baseball guys said that what Aaron judge is doing could be could be the greatest baseball season of all time. What do you think? I think it's a very fair statement. I do think without getting too deep into the weeds with the doping stretch. I think that was a much different era. I also think post integration, I think that matters. There's too many big wins above replacement seasons, too much too many extreme seasons. In the earlier part of the 20th century,

"One of our favorite guests, Joey Votto, the reds first baseman 6 time all star won the MVP back in 2010 and now he's a fan. I mean, not a fan of this show. I'm just talking about he was a fan at the ballpark. He's out with a shoulder surgery. You were trending on Twitter. Was this planned that you were going to go and be a fan and watch the game? Hi, Dan. Hi, Joey. I am a fan of your show. I it just all came about. So I throw in a Pittsburgh pirates of Roberto Clemente Jersey when I was accepting the nomination for the Cincinnati reds, and I felt guilt. I felt guilt that I had a pirates Jersey on. So I was like, I got to take this Jersey off. It's the right thing to do with where the Jersey, but I needed to give it to a fan. So I was like, all right, I've never been in the stands before. I'm going to head up. We're going to give the Clemente Jersey to a young fan. I'm going to sign I had a reds 21 also. I'm allowed to wear 21 because I'm a Clemente nominee. I signed that one. I'm going to go give it to a fan. So I head upstairs. And I go to the entryway and I'd always imagined hoped that one day I would be able to interact with the fans kind of during my career, but I'm playing. And I'm injured right now. So I had the opportunity. So I head up to the front gates, the security. I walk outside and there's a little one there, and I give her the Clemente Jersey, and she was appreciative, and then I crossed paths with another reds fan. And I give my Jersey to. And so I'm there. I start taking pictures, start signing autographs. And then I just decide, this feels okay. This feels safe. People are reacting well. I'm going to keep going. So I've never been to the 500 section before. I head upstairs. I go to the 502nd. What have you? I've never seen a reds game before. I've never interacted with the reds fans mid game. I get down there. I go behind home plate. I go into the right field bleachers, left the obliques, walk the concourse. You know, the reactions I got made it worthwhile. So it just all came so quickly. But did you get people who, well, the reactions were what? I'm gonna guess they're like, you kind of look like Joey Votto, but you can't be Joey Votto. Lots of that. There was a lot of Red Sox fans. And most of them looked at me and were like, dude, show me your ticket. Is this even your seat?

"Thanks for being with us. Good morning, Scott. 7 people joined baseball Hall of Fame tomorrow, including Emma see a hero of my childhood. Many minoso. Signed with the Cleveland baseball team, then went on to the Chicago White Sox, the first black Latino athlete to play in the majors. Plead his last game in his 50s. And he opened up the way for great future players, didn't he Yes, he did before Roberto Clemente Scott, there was many minoso, the Cuban comet, he was the first black Latin player in the big leagues, really one of the great outfielders of the 1950s. And other big leaguers have called them, you know, the Jackie Robinson for all Latinos, like you said, he went from the Negro leagues in the 40s to Cleveland, was eventually traded to the White Sox, and really he was associated with that team for the rest of his life until he died in 2015. People a lot of people don't know this unless you're from Chicago like me and you, he was the first black player in Chicago period. Yeah. You know, he made appearances in the pigs over 5 decades. He was brought back for a couple of at bats as designated hitter in his 50s. And a lot of people think Scott that he was passed over for the hall because some of those later in life appearances and his prime was forgotten, talked to his son in Chicago. He told me that minoso devoted his whole life to baseball in the family is thrilled that he's finally getting his due even if it is posthumously. Yeah. Gil Hodges Jim caught, but Fowler, buck O'Neill, also in the hall. Rob Manfred, the MLB commissioner is opened a major league controversy because he said this week minor league players are in a living wage, no minor leaguer said well. Easy for a guy who makes over 10 million a year to say. What's at the heart of this? At the heart of it is Major League Baseball settling a $185 million to the tune of a $185 million. Thanks to thousands of current former minor leaguers who brought this suit saying that they were underpaid and the league is now settling with them and that's why he was asked that the All-Star Game this week, you know, I don't owners paid their minor leaguers a living wage. You said he just completely rejected the premise of the question, and players, you know, this is very recent. They do get housing, of course, they do get those side and bonuses, but unless you're a really high draft pick, you're not making those big bonuses. Most guys sign for much, much less as little as a $1000, which they have to stretch over several years. And according to at least one minor leaguers advocacy group, the vast majority of guys make less than $12,000 for the season and that's below the poverty line, a Senate committee is looking at the league right now. They're wondering why they need an antitrust exemption from minimum wage and overtime laws, and they want answers from Manfred by Tuesday, Scott. Let me simply note Toronto Blue Jays beat and I do mean beat the Boston Red Sox at Fenway. Last night, 28 to 5, a new record, but speaking of new records, the world athletic championships and tomorrow American sprinters have dominated, haven't they? It has been a great pun completely intended run for the Americans at the worlds and Eugene Oregon. And if you're one of those people, Scott likes to watch other people run around a circle and I'm one of those people because I ran track at high school nut as well as these guys, but you got American Noah lyles, breaking the U.S. 200 meter record. You had men sweeping the 100 meter and 200 meter men's medals for the first time by any country. And then last night, if you haven't seen it, look it up, everybody listening to me, Sydney McLaughlin dominating from start to finish in the women's 400 meter hurdles final. It was absolutely an exhilarating performance shattering her own world record clocking in at 50.68 seconds that is extremely fast. Tonight's events are headlined by the four by 100 finals. That is my analysis. That's a win PR. ESPN's Michelle Steele, thanks very much for joining us. You bet. And you're

"Mendoza is an analyst for ESPN and Jess before we talk about Jackie Robinson day. Knowing you're interested in music, I thought this would interest you earlier in the week. We found out that our friend Sarah Abbott is named for the song Sarah by Fleetwood Mac, her sister is named for the song Amanda by Boston, and I told Sarah the other day. Like it's not even close. She got the cooler song over her older sister. What do you think? Oh, totally. I mean, I feel like Rhiannon needed to be in there somewhere too. Just throw in all the cool. That's awesome. It says a lot about Sarah's parents too. I'm all about classic rock. So Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Stevie mix is like, she's like one of my all time favorite artists ever. Okay, so you're going to be excited about that. But then you're going to be appalled by this. Sarah, before our conversation the other day in the podcast, had never looked at the lyrics of the song Sarah or listened to the song in the lyrics. How about that? What? Sarah? Defend yourself. I felt it would be narcissistic. And also, my sister, I kind of explained it a little bit. She would blast her song all the time. And so being the youngest, I'm like, I don't think I have any right to blast my song over her. But what it's like the song was about a serial killer named Sarah and you were like living your whole life, not even knowing your parents were like, maybe you have to. That was part of the fear. Okay. Okay, that makes sense. I didn't want to know. Very nice. All right. Jackie Robinson day to day. Jess, how did you find out about Jackie Robinson the first time? What do you remember how you went through that process? I grew up a Dodger fan, my favorite player of Sandy Koufax, and so that was a natural extension for me at age 8, 9 years old. What about for you? My dad. You know, he talked a lot about it's amazing. Roberto Clemente satchel page and Jackie Robinson were like three players that really, you know, he was born in 1939. So he got to see Jackie play and just the opportunity and the understanding for him being Mexican American, his family coming from Mexico, just understanding even then at a younger age, the importance of seeing color in a sport that he absolutely loves. I mean, he came from a huge baseball family. His dad and his grandfather played baseball professionally in Mexico and just how important the sport was, but then coming over to the U.S. and not seeing any color. Especially for him, even though the daughters were in Brooklyn. But as they made their way to LA, just knowing the history and the importance of Jackie Robertson, and then what that led to, because in our family Roberto Clemente was like, put on a pedestal, and then thereafter in the 80s when I was growing up, it was Fernando Valenzuela. And it all began with Jackie. And so just hearing the stories of my dad, you know, a lot of dads, I think, talk about the Mickey mantles and the Joe DiMaggio's and rightly so, but in our family, it was about Jackie Robinson. It was about satchel page, just how he'd throw a baseball and a replica mentee and what he meant to our entire community. Nice, nice. Yeah. I just love the fact that every year we have the conversation. And then that you know that there are new fans who are learning about Jackie Robinson for the first time and learning about his legacy. All right, I got a few things to run past. You show how tani last night gets lit up for the first time in his career. He allowed a home run on his split finger fastball on an O two pitch, so the 9th hitter for the Texas Rangers. And as of this morning, he has a 7 5 6 ERA and he's a one 72 batting average, and I'm sorry, but I'm attributing it directly to the shortened spring training. What about you? Yeah, I mean, definitely I think that's for sure part of it. We're seeing that even just with hitters kind of struggle out the gate and just figuring stuff out. But I mean, to me, I think Shohei Ohtani did something last year that set a standard and an expectation that is unreal. I mean, honestly, what Shohei Ohtani was able to accomplish last season. I'm not saying he can't repeat that, but I think there's also now just every time he takes the mound every time he's in the batter's box, we expect greatness beyond anything I think we've ever expected from a player. And guess what he's human? And that's what I saw I think more than anything is, you know, you're going to wake up some days and split might not be what it was yesterday and you were still working on stuff and your body might feel this way or honestly you just don't look at it. And that's okay. I think if we see this consecutively over the course of multiple starts and after we're a month and a half into the season, then it might be something different, but I think ultimately the expectation for show hands honey has never been higher..

"Five eighty five. Slugging percentage was the three hole hitter that provided a threat and that already scary lineup in was basically the reason they were able to get over the hump that year. Some other guys are honorable mention. I mean the red sox getting david roberts in two thousand and four of course he went on to swipe that bag in the postseason. The blue jays acquired david price in twenty fourteen. He helped them to a post-season run. The phillies getting cliff. Lee from the indians in two thousand and nine to get back to the world series the cubs acquiring rick sutcliffe from the indians in eighty. Four the diamondbacks get curt schilling from the phillies. In two thousand. You have the angels getting mark to share from the braves and the cardinals getting mark maguire from the athletics. All of those guys had fantastic. Runs down the stretch. But those other ten. I think we're the best of the bunch and the best trade deadline accusations of all time. So which one did you think was the best out of those ten. "With a four eighty nine on base percentage and a seven forty three slugging percentage the o. p. s. there is one point two three two absolutely locked it. He hit seventeen home. Runs and had fifty. Three rb went in one hundred games for boston. He had twenty home runs and sixty eight so almost topping his numbers there and half a season. I mean october. He was just as good. He reached base at a ridiculous six. Sixty seven clip. He had four home runs against just a few pitchers who actually pitched to him and ultimately fell to the phillies in the nfc. Yes but man was manny ramirez good for the dodgers and no eight. After he was traded. There he came back in nine once again but no eight. During his time he was absolutely lights out. The next one is fred mcgriff. The braves acquired him in nineteen ninety three. They traded vince more. Donnie elliott and melvin names to the padres firm griff. They were in second place in the nfl. West eight games back before ultimately winning the national league west by one game and they lost to the phillies. That year in the nfl is well but in. Nineteen ninety-three is time in atlanta mma griffith three ten on base percentage. Three ninety two slugging. Six twelve he had nineteen home runs fifty five. Rbi's which was more than his time in san diego that year. He was good in the playoffs as well and just fantastic for atlanta of course re-signing there and moving on but after that trade. He was excellent coming down the stretch. Another one by the astros carlos beltran they acquired beltran. The as got octavio dough. Tell the royal scott mark. Mike wooden john buck back in two thousand and four. The astros went from fifth place in the national league. Central seven games back saint louis and ultimately won the. Nfl wildcard that year by one game. They did lose in the postseason in the nfc to the cardinals but it was at no fought of beltran who during his time in houston to fifty eight but he had twenty. Three home runs and fifty three. Rbi's three sixty eight on base five fifty nine slugging percentage the two thousand and four postseason. He had clutch hitting hitting with runners in scoring position. He hit four home. Runs in the nfl ds that year to reach the nlc. He hit a home. Run in each of the four games in the in the nfl. Cbs before. Losing to the cardinals. I mean eight home runs in the postseason that year. He was absolutely fantastic and locked in at number four. I have lou brock of the st louis cardinals. The cardinals traded ernie brogue. Leo doug clemens and bobby shantz to the cubs for brock jack spring and paul toth. This was in one thousand nine hundred sixty four. They were in eighth place in the national league and after the trade they won the national league by one game and went on to win the world series lou brock sixty four after the trade to saint louis c. Hit three forty eight had a three eighty seven. On base percentage of five twenty. Seven slugging percentage. He hit twelve home. Runs had forty four r. b. is he only had two home runs and fourteen. Rbi's for the cubs. Before that. i mean they got the best of both worlds came back won the pennant and ultimately went on to beat the mickey mantle lead yankees in the world series and of course brock ended up in saint louis for the next fifteen years of his career so he certainly turned out long-term but short term is well going from eight games back in the national league to winning the world series next i have. Cc's abacha to the brewers. The brewers traded matt laporta zach jackson rob bryson and michael branly to the indians for c. Sobat the up. The brewers went from third place in the national league central four games back of the chicago cubs to ultimately winning the national league card. By one game they did lose in the nfl ds that year to the phillies so two thousand and eight manny ramirez to the dodgers and see sebastian to the brewers. Both of them were fantastic but neither of them could end the phillies. That year sobat made seventeen starts for the brewers after the trade going eleven two with a one six five era. He threw seven complete games. During those seventeen starts. He had three shutouts in one hundred and thirty innings only allowing six home runs. He had twenty five walks to one hundred twenty eight strikeouts and what makes it even. More impressive is his urine in cleveland that year and eighteen starts. He was six and eight with a three eight three year so he was absolutely a difference maker. He propelled him to the post season basically by himself. Seven complete games. Three of them shutouts. He finished in the top six. Both cy young as well. As mvp voting that year he ultimately did lose his start to the phillies in the postseason. Of course to walk to brett myers and then the home run by shane. Victorino that's forever etched in. My memory is a phillies fan. But oh my goodness i. It was just electric to watch. C c sabathia down the stretch the last two here. I have our ricky henderson being acquired by the athletics. The as traded greg dayrit eric plunk in lewis. Pola nia to the yankees for ricky henderson. This happened in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine the as were in first place up by two games but ultimately won the al west by seven games and went on to win the world series. So ricky henderson and eighty nine for the as he hit two ninety four had a four twenty five on base percentage four thirty eight slugging percentage but he stole fifty two bags in eighty five games. He also had seventy walks to only thirty nine strikeouts. Nine home runs thirty. Five rb is in sixty five games for the yankees only twenty five steals. He was sitting to forty seven. He had three home runs. Twenty two. rbi's so he was. He was perfect as their leadoff hitter. Turned into the best leadoff hitter in baseball as it was over for the rest of the league. Fifty two steals in eighty five games after a four twenty five on base percentage man. He he was just a menace on the base fast for oakland. And then the last one. I have here is david justice to the yankees in the year. Two thousand the yankees traded ricky. La- day jake. Westbrook zach day to the indians for david justice. They were in second place in the american league east. Three games back of toronto. They ultimately won the american league east by two and a half games and went on to win. The world series in two thousand injustice was a huge part of that for his time in new york. He hit three zero five three ninety one on base five eighty five. Slugging percentage twenty home runs sixty. Rbi in just seventy eight games. This was up from a to sixty five average with cleveland. So he was unbelievable. The yankees needed some left-handed pop in their lineup. And justice was just the guy to do it again. That twenty home runs sixty. Rbi's in seventy eight games and insane..

We did the roberto clemente award segment. One and two. Well now. we're talking about the season awards. Mvp cy young mvp awards in the american league. This one is still pretty much settled. I mean as of september twelfth so a few days ago shohei ohtani remained at minus six thousand so the clear clear clear clear. Clear cut favorite to win the award with vlad guerrero junior at plus one thousand. Five hundred fifty. But vlad junior is having just an absolutely monster of a season. I mean obviously the reasons behind. It is because shohei is avenue once in a lifetime type of season. He's one of the best haters in the league. While also having an all star caliber year on the mound he stole in twenty-three base is so i don't get me wrong. I mean shohei certainly deserves the award. But just looking at vlad guerrero where he stands in some of these categories offensively any other season. This guy would be the clear-cut mvp in the american league. I mean just listen to these categories here when it comes to rankings in the american league. He's first in hits. I in runts. I in home runs third in rbi. I in total basis. I in batting. Average first in on base percentage i in slugging percentage i in oh p. Ps i ps plus. I in times on base third in walks in fourth in extra base hits goodness how many times can i say i within the last two minutes just unbelievable so this guy thinking is he. The best is he having the best season of all time not to win the mvp award and it was a bit of a struggle and how to kind of defined the best offensive season and now win the mvp. But one easy way. I was able to kind of break down. Some of the statistics was to look at players who led their league. And what is called the triple slash right. The average obt and slugging. What you see on television. Oh hitting three oh seven on base four twenty five oh p s are slugging percentage six sixty six right or whatever it is on on the screen when you see them always one for two tonight they show that triple slash for every hitter so i wanted to look at some guys who finished i i and i in the triple slash but did not win the mvp award that season and it only happened about. I don't know seven or eight times in one time. A ted williams. I guess did it a lot right or one guy i should say. Did it a lot back in the day so starting out numerically. Right in regards to years most recent to most ancient here moving forward it happened in two thousand and nineteen for christian yelich in the milwaukee brewers. There's a bit of a caveat when it comes to the reason why yelich may not have won the mvp award during this season and that is because he had a broken kneecap in september. He ended up finishing second for the award that year. But of course had some absurd stats that season and playing one hundred thirty games. He had a three twenty nine batting average. Four twenty nine on base percentage. Six seventy one. Slugging percentage forty four home runs ninety seven or b. Is he had thirty. Stolen bases eighty walks to one hundred and eighteen strikeouts. He was an all star. Silver slugger and my goodness. He ended the tie he ended in the top. Ten hits and runs in rb is he was fourth in home runs seventh in total bases and my goodness. That's just a fantastic year and it was unfortunate circumstance where he got injured late in the year which ultimately cost him winning that award and since twenty nineteen you have to go all the way back to the year two thousand so for nineteen years. Being i in the triple slash did did equate to winning. Mvp right it didn't happen again there for nineteen years so in two thousand for todd. Helton was the next time that this took place. And these are pre- humidor numbers for chorus field. Helton hit three. Seventy two had a four sixty three on base percentage and a six ninety eight slugging percentage of one point one six to.

He spearheaded multiple community events including raising money for more than thirty thousand for the fourth annual. Trevino's toy drive during the holiday season in twenty twenty so these guys certainly make a move here in the american league and honestly this segments run a bit log. I do enjoy talking about these guys and all the great things that they're doing here in the community so actually what i'm gonna do is. I'm going to discuss the national league here in segment number two. I know we talked. Vlad guerrero junior in segment two. But i'll probably push that to segment number three here. As i think this is good quality content and information and these guys deserve a shoutout for what they're doing out there. Only one of these guys is ultimately going to win the award but just being nominated is certainly a huge positive in very respectful across major league baseball. So we'll step aside here now for a word from one of our sponsors and one of our sisters shows but when we come back. We're going to continue through the national league. And like i mentioned this award is given to the player who best represents the game through extraordinary character community involvement philanthropy and positive contributions both on and off the fields and a lot of times major league. baseball players. Don't get recognized for the work. They do off the field. And that's where i thought about just running through these giving you guys the names on ultimately who was nominated but i figured i'll take the time and discuss what these guys are actually doing in the community because a lot of times people think oh those are dumb jock so or baseball players who aren't giving back or horrible people. Well there's a lot of good guys in the game of baseball. There's a lot of nice individuals out there who are more than willing to give back to the community. Give their time. Give some money. Give their efforts to bettering the community there in or bettering the environment of somebody who who's not as well off as others so it certainly deserves the time for me to go through and list all of these guys and discuss what they're doing in the communities and ultimately give them some props here for one show out of the year to talk a little bit off the field and not go through all the stuff with baseball that's happening but we'll get to that at the tail end of the episode but i just think these guys deserve for their nominations and the reasons why they're nominated to be discussed here on this podcast today. So starting in the national league east you have. The atlanta braves their nominee. As will smith smith receives the braves nomination in recognition for many selfless efforts. Wednesday was roberto clemente day. So here at the top of the show we're going to get into roberto clemente. His career or his everlasting mark both on and off the field and then discuss the 2021 roberto clemente award nominees that you can vote on here for one of the most prestigious individual honors in major league baseball. We're then going to dive into flat guerrero. Junior how he is potentially having the best offensive season in the history of baseball to now win the mvp award. I'm pretty confident. In saying that shohei otani is still going to win the mvp so we'll dive into flat junior season as well as some others throughout the course of history who have had fantastic offensive years in not won the mvp award in the third segment. We're gonna get into trade deadline. Acquisitions with what max. Scherzer is doing out there in l. a. six so far point eight year origami thinking one other deadline accusations had a fantastic half a year and either lead their team to the playoffs just performed admirably for them from august first through the end of september. So we're gonna talk about quite a few traits that went down. We're guys were absolutely fantastic for their new ball. Clubs made a huge difference and then finally at the tail end of the episode. We'll get into news notes. Injuries the latest across major league baseball across the board. That's been happening out there. But like i mentioned right here. At the top of the episode september fifteenth was roberto clemente day and roberto clemente. His legacy has largely been defined by the final active his life when the plane. He chartered to deliver supplies to earthquake. Victims in. nicaragua crashed off the coast of his native. Puerto rico shortly after takeoff back on new year's eve in one thousand nine hundred seventy to his reputation as a selfless humanitarian became that of legends. And of course. Roberto was an absolute stud on the baseball fields. But he is more so known for his acts of kindness and what he did for others off the field. I mean first off on the field. Clemente was the first player from latin. America inducted into the national baseball hall of fame during his eighteen year career with the pirates. Clemente was a two time world series champion. Twelve time gold glove award winner in right field. Fifteen time all star. He was the nineteen sixty six national league. Mvp and he was also the first latin american player to reach the three thousand hit mark. Because i mean this guy was just an absolute stud looking at his career. His career batting average of three seventeen he had two hundred and forty career home runs. One thousand three hundred five rb is he was just an absolute menace. He won that. Mvp award like. I said in sixty six but he finished third in the voting in sixty seven four in the voting in one thousand nine hundred sixty one fifth in mvp voting in nineteen seventy one so from nineteen sixty through nineteen seventy two. He was an all star for eleven to twelve years. I mean this guy was just an absolute menace out there for the pirates in play in his entire eighteen career. Eighteen year career in pittsburgh absolute joy to watch his high for batting average in nineteen sixty. One was three fifty one. Oh we hit three fifty seven in one thousand nine hundred sixty seven. I was wrong. There was this career high so reverts l. on the field. Obviously an absolute stud but known even more so for what he did off the field. I mean this guy. He dealt with racism back in in his time as he arrived in the major leagues in nineteen fifty. Five only eight years. After jackie robinson became the first black player in the history of american and national leagues and he arrived nine years before president lyndon johnson signed the civil rights act into law. So it's only fitting. That clemente made his debut against robinson in the brooklyn dodgers as they continued racial equality struggles from then on moving forward of course because clemente was afro. Latino of dissent he was subject to the jim. Crow laws notably in fort myers florida where the pirates held spring training. So like the other black players of his eric lamented was not allowed to stay at the same hotel or shale share meals with his teammates at restaurants and yet legalized segregation was foreign. Diclemente because he had grown up in a much more integrated society in puerto rico. He said quote back in one thousand nine hundred seventy two. My mother and father never taught me to hate anyone or to dislike anyone because of their race or color. We never talked about that and quote so clemente. Of course he was big inequality he dealt with racism. Just like jackie robinson but he continued to give back to the community and be a figure a hero. Almost for that of puerto rico and latino descent again just his humanitarian efforts that he gave back to everybody up until his final act. Like i mentioned in nineteen seventy two when that plane went down just after takeoff when he was headed to nicaragua clemente was only thirty. Eight years old at the time of his fatal plane accident so he didn't even live a full life. And my goodness just an absolute shame as one of the best overall humans in the history of the game of baseball his life was cut short but baseball has since named september fifteenth. National roberto clemente day. They have allowed a handful of players to wear the number. Twenty one in honor of roberto clemente. It seems like quite a few more each year are giving the okay to where the twenty one and that's certainly fitting and i certainly appreciate dad watching the phillies tonight. It was andrew mccutchen for the fight and fills rocking the number. Twenty one. but there's also the roberto clemente award that has been given out every year and there is one nominee per ballclub and this year. There were eighteen first time nominees. The roberto clemente award annually recognizes the major league baseball player. Who best represents the game through extraordinary character community involvement philanthropy and positive contributions both on and off the field and because of this it is one of the most prestigious awards across major league baseball and is not directly tied to performance on the field. So this is a big deal to get nominated But obviously an even bigger deal to have to win the award. So september fifteenth roberto clemente day. Also correlates with the first day of hispanic heritage month. It is a nice touch for major league baseball to coincide. Those two events on september fifteenth. So who the nominees across major league baseball. Well we'll start out in the american league east for the blue jays as boba shit. It's his first ever nomination. He was nominated for the work. He's done both in toronto.

"Espn david how're you doing this week. I'm good buster. I enjoyed the first two parts of the mets documentary last night. I watched it with my wife who her family grew up mets fan so as she told me this brings me back to my child and her beloved lenny. Dykstra your favorite player back. When she was ten years old. I want to get to that in a second. I'm gonna ask you about that in a second. Today's roberto clemente de okay I told this story you know i. Roberto clementi was a star joss. I started to become aware of Baseball i was eight years old when he got career. Hit number three thousand. I'll never forget The back page. I think it was the new york. Daily news my mom. God up in vermont on sunday and i can remember the picture of clementi after getting career. Hit number three thousand and his. It turned out that was the last hit of his career because that that winner He new year's eve he died. He was killed in a plane Plane crash just off. The juan. And i remember that radio News coming across the radio that day and just being really sad about that. Jimmy roberto clemente memory for you. Yeah i mean he was before my time so my memories are just tied to you know. The few videos didn't plan if you go onto youtube there. There's a throw. I think it's from the seventy one world series. Where yet you see him displaying his famous arm throwing somebody out from the deep right field corner if he was just an amazing player. He's a front foot hitter. You know when she don't see that anymore he would. he would be told the changes batting style. Today's game probably go for more runs. But i think he won four batting. Titles you know best defensive right fielder of all time. The three thousand hits just an amazing all around ballplayer. Yeah the guy that throw you reference the guy sliding into third base was merv redmond yemen years later would be the hitting coach of the san diego padres when i covered that team and i asked him about that throw and he talked about the utter surprise of going into third base going. Oh my god like it's going to be closed and in the end moore was safe. You know that famous throw that clementi made but he was used so blown away by the power of his arm. The eighty six mets documentary. I loved it. And i especially love even years after the fact the raw nature of that team like to this day. As i ask darrell. Strawberry like guys don't like each other still on that team. It'd work decades past that. Yeah it was pretty amazing. I mean of course lenny dykstra pending on whether you're watching on espn espn two. He heard him with the bleeps or without the bleeps. He's the same old dykstra that uh obviously has also gotten into a lot of trouble recent ears so he's kind of a star other showed a lot of ways but yeah the fake. They really caught me. Was gary carter. The late gary carter simultaneously beloved by his teammates for his toughness playing through his knee. Injuries yet here. They are still kind of making fun of them. Because gary carter was a straight laced guy. They're all out there partying all night long and carter and we'd go back to his hotel room so that part their views of carter not afraid to sort of dig into him. Even you know with him being long past is that was kinda funny. Yeah it was. And i think that over time. They gained appreciation for him New as got to know him that he was authentic. Remember next witcher When he played he would always have that grin on his face in it always be saying something and he drove. Players crazy like other players didn't like him and then i was asked about him once by a guy on another team. Hey what's swish really liking. It and i said this to the player. Like that's how nick is twenty four hours a day like it or not like he turns it on. He turns it off. That's his personality. All the time in that. I think with gary carter. I think that's what the mets realize. Look that glass half full aspect tomb that super positively that they would see him on television which from afar belt plastic to them. They realize now that that's how he goes about his day. Yeah keith hernandez had a great quote said when they've played against him before he came to the mets they. He said he was disliked. The entire league did not like this guy but then after it came over the mets and they played together. He'd says. I realized he was all about winning. And that's all we cared about exactly so we got to tonight. I would encourage everybody to To watch the eighty-sixth documentary. It's absolutely terrific. I wanna ask you about the nationally wild qarase whether we should describe it is terrific. I think these teams are playing bill. Check sent me these notes since august seventeenth in the nationally wild card race. The cardinals are fourteen and thirteen five. Nine hundred winning percentage. They're the only one of the five teams. Over five hundred dave the metric twelve and fifteen. The phillies are eleven and fifteen. The reds are ten fifteen and of course. The padres have collapsed in recent weeks. They have a tough schedule down the stretch their seven in sixteen. What do you make of the national league wild card race for that second spot. Yeah watching that game last night. So yeah four wins in a row now for saint louis which is like a huge streak. In this rate. I remember going on st louis. Radio wasn't that long ago maybe even just two weeks maybe three weeks ago and the hosts there were just lamenting miserable. Awful.

But he's actually been rehired to announce games again. Good, and it's just four months later. It's just, you know, As soon as the incident happened on air, he said he went right on and apologize. And he said, I don't know if I'm ever gonna put headsets on again. He knew the severity of what happened. And pretty much thought His career was over.
