"Tweets all righty bleacher tweets for first up Carlos Muniz at Carlos. Almighty he writes in Jim Palmer mentioned pictures being taken with the opposing starter. Before Games should the should major league baseball. Bring this back to advertise matchups. The way boxing does could be used to inject more rivalry and emphasis on the starters. Yeah Noah syndergaard staring down Madison Bumgarner. That would be pretty cool but Look starting pitchers have been de emphasized in recent years and the other thing too is that more and more teams hide the information about who they're starting pitcher is going to be ahead of time so. I think it'd be harder to work but I like the idea like the thought process. That could be fun Ryan Lounge at Rilo. Twenty-one writes in with continued advancement in analytics and the quote unquote thought. Managers are not as important. Could you see the player manager role making a comeback especially in a more cost-efficiency effort? Do Co. I don't know the one thing I'd say about this. I think managers spent a lot more time at the park than they used to. It's a it is a labor intensive job now It doesn't have the responsibility that used to have in terms of who you know the power of the manager to make decisions for the organization but in terms of the time. I don't think that'd be workable unless the player you're talking about would be a pinch hitter. You Know D. H. type at the end of their careers. Kinda like the way Frank. Robinson was as he took over as manager. The Cleveland Indians last. Tweet for today and this is another tweet. That came in and I'm like Ooh I'm excited to hear from buster on this the legend of Buster. Only as I continue to learn about each and every day Brian Simpson writes. I read an article that you had a run in with Dion Sanders when he was a minor. Leager in your reporter Nashville. What is that all about? Yeah and Brian. If you want if you were to Google my name and Dion Sanders than you would find an article. I wrote free. Spn DOT COM And we actually used it to to sort of start spring training every year for about a period of ten straight years. It was like a kickoff story at the beginning of spring. Training Dion. I wrote a column. That was critical of the way he was going about his business when he was with the Columbus Clippers I went to the clubhouse. Tried talk to him. He had no interest in talking with me And so I wrote this column. That was critical and the next day as I wrote in the peace. A ballboy batboy brought a baseball up to the press box and on it or the words. If you write like that your whole life you'll always be a loser. I I still have that baseball. Unfortunately didn't sign it. That's amazing I would at some point. I really do hope I've never talked about this. I don't know I would love to have a conversation with him and he probably doesn't even remember it. Dealt with a lot of media members through time but it. I'm sure that he would get a laugh out of it. The way that I get a laugh out of it. That is a truly legendary story. There buster thanks real quick keep keep writing in. "And Sarah just I was covering the Yankees in in the spring of nineteen ninety nine when that deal went down Murray Chas. Who's my colleague at that time? Got a tip that this deal was going to go down. I followed up. We had that story this morning News breaker and so early that morning We were all gathered all the reporters because of our story all the reporters covering the Yankees were gathered outside the clubhouse waiting for David and others to arrive. 'cause deal hasn't been announced yet and David can't came Strolling into the clubhouse a little bit later than a lot of his teammates and I remember him looking at US quizzically. Like what. What are you guys doing. And then he immediately is. Is We learn later. We didn't see this or their own. Is You went to his locker. And he was summoned into Joe Tories. Office and Sarah you talk about someone devastated about a trade. 'cause David loved boomer love being on the Yankees. Just can't even imagine you know with the way news travels now and everything else figure that this day and age. Someone would have seen a tweet here. I've heard something. Someone would have whispered something so really incredible that moment of him actually being like. What are you guys doing here like? What's going on school? You know you don't get that anymore just doesn't happen and then number six on our list is only talks about this. Roberto ullmark Fred mcgriff. Tony Fernandez Trade. So I already mentioned the numbers there. But it's one thousand nine hundred ninety padres in the Blue Jays hundred eighty four point five war with Roberto Almar at sixty seven leading the way and looking at your list notices deal where you get three different players with at least forty five war in their career. That tells you how big a deal it was among these and as you'll hear in the interview with Pat. He raises me like the idea. That Roberto Alamar didn't get voted into the hall of fame in his first try is was staggering and just a shock because of how he changed the way middle infielders play. Yeah absolutely outstanding player. And I don't know it's always so incredible to me to see these great players having been traded. Obviously the Frank Robinson trade as you said and of his career but he was traded prior to that in his career as well and you think about how much it takes for us to finally see someone like Matthew Betz traded these days. And you know how many times we heard about Manny Ramirez. Is he going to be traded even more than ten years ago? Now and it. It's so interesting to me to see these trades because all of these we talked about. I mean the latest one was nineteen ninety nine while you were talking about with Roger Clemens in David Wells and it feels like these things sort of happened differently now. We we still get blockbusters but not quite not quite the same. Not This caliber of player getting drawn. No I kind of wondered if the Tom. Seaver trade might come close to being involved in this We talked about that with Johnny Bench. Last week And that at the time it went down was huge and by the way you mentioned the Manny Ramirez Trade. We're GONNA be talking later in the week with Jed Hoyer The WHO's formerly with the red sox now Chicago cubs about that deal and how that went down and also of course the trade deadline a two thousand four when the red sox made that shocking trade of Nomar Garciaparra. All Right Sarah. Thanks for doing this tram. Gusta like was inducted into baseball's hall of fame in two thousand eleven after career overseeing the Blue Jays the orioles the mariners the Phillies Pat Thanks for joining US and helping to this in these times and joining the storytelling well busters nice to be with you and the and the other fans baseball. I think everybody's looking for us something to do with sports and I think we're all the game tremendously at this moment absolutely and we've had so much fun talking with folks like George Brad and Mike Mussina Johnny Bench and getting stories and their time in baseball. So you know having known you when I covered the orioles back in the mid nineties. I know you got a lot of stories in baseball. I wanted to ask you about The spring of two thousand one when a hall of Famer because we didn't know it at that time arrived in Mariners camp when you were overseeing Seattle. That was the first spring training of each row. Sukey with the mariners and I remember because I was I was covering the Yankees at the time I just remember hearing from scouts. Stories of this guy is overrated. He's this little guy's got a funky swing and the initial reaction to each row when he arrived in Mariners Camp. Looking back on. It seems pretty. Funny I sort of had a little bit of jump start on Spring Training Right after we signed him Naturally it happened At the general managers meeting that year was in Amelia Island? Down in Florida and He came over or right if we signed him and he wanted to take some batting practice at At SAFECO field which is now t mobile field in Seattle. You WanNa take some BP's so One of our our our coaches who lived in the area he came over and he was gonNA throw batting practice and we had a lot of the press out there. And this was this was in Who's in late November and he? He stepped into the batting cage and he took one hundred and fifty swings and never stepped out of the batter's box in one hundred and swings and he never he never stepped out to take could be breath. He never stepped out because he thought he was tired. Took one hundred fifty consecutive swings in a batting cage. And so I kind of got a little bit of Advance on we're Kinda guy was and This was a very goal oriented real driven Individuals so I knew that at least with my saw and that's brief work out there in Seattle that we were going to get a player that was going to be Tremendously committed To be in a not only a great offensive player but a great defensive player. You have pat the some of the concerns initially that I heard from scouts with other teams. They're like boy he doesn't really hit the ball. He doesn't really drive the ball He doesn't really I think just because his swing was so unusual and it wasn't something that people are used to seeing that they. They focused on that a lot early in in his time with the mariners. Well you know it's funny No it's a different sport and But I always kind of compared him to Wayne Gretzky. It seemed you know Wayne Grice. He didn't have the hardest shot in the world. But it seemed like Wayne. Gretzky had the the ability. The guide the puck into the net. And it's almost like When I first saw him in two thousand and one and we started playing you thought it was luck that he was hitting balls Continuing the whole between third and short But as it went on went on you knew that this was a design. It was something that he had practice something that he had worked on for long time and the other thing that we had an advantage. Buster was for big league manage a big league pitcher pitcher. Jim Coburn was our scout and he. He coach two years in Japan with Ichiro team. Which was the Orix Bluewave? And so he knew him for a makeup slammed point. Jim was bilingual in both Japanese and English and so he had a relationship With Ichiro and then he scattered for the mariners and he was really The one who put us onto Chiro and and really gave us an advantage. I think over the other teams. At that time I saw you and the mariners in late April of two thousand one after he got off to a good start and you actually the one that came over to me by the batting cage. And we were talking about. You know the the question whether or not he could drive the ball and you said in batting practice. He could hit a ton of home runs. And you mentioned that right away. You were like yeah. He could do that if he wanted to. Kind of like the stories you heard about Wade boggs very similar very similar to Wade Boggs Because we were in spring training in two thousand and one in lieu wanted to see him have a little more power and so Jim Coburn happened to be an Arizona with us and he mentioned the it's euro and in batting practice. He at about ten balls in a row out to right field in in Peoria and then in a couple of ballgames exhibition games that Spring. He had a couple of home runs so when he wanted to You know he could He he get show you some power. But most of the time he we. He's a contact hitter. DidN'T WANNA strike out. Wanted to put the ball in play. They have a drill in Japan which is a little bit unique They throw a pitch and they bounce at fifty eight feet about two feet in front of the plate and then the hitter is supposed to hit the ball on the bounce after it when it comes up on the balance and this is a drill that he went through with pitcher's throwing the ball fifty eight feet and then he would hit the ball off the bounce. You help to explain how he honed. That incredible eye hand coordination i. I really feel like the moment that he arrived pat in sort of a national Conscious at least among people in baseball with when you guys were playing in Oakland in about He was about ten days into the big leagues and terrence. Long was trying to run from first to third base and each row charged a base to right field and made an absolutely perfect throw to third base in fact David Bell If you look at a replay of it it looks almost looks like the throw would have hit the third base bag if not for the bill caught it to tag terrence long. What do you remember about that play? Well you know what are our compared to play you. 'cause I was a kid myself a long time ago and the two guys that I thought that Could have made that same play. One was Calvillo alkaline If anybody could have duplicated that throw it. In my estimation that were there was those are two that it was possible to do it. You don't see you don't see plays like that very much anymore. One of the things you know as knowing the game are feelers are not thrown as well as they did years ago. And I think that's one of the more exciting plays in. Baseball is to throw a run around third base. Throw runner out at home plate it. It's a great defensive play and so You know I would rate that throw that. He made an Oakland. They know right up there with Some throws that I saw that as I said two x Major League Colorado on line made now you were in the middle of one of the great blockbuster trades in baseball history. When you were with the Blue Jays you swap Fred mcgriff and Tony Fernandez to the San Diego Padres for Roberto Alamar and Joe Carter Joe. Mcilvaine was the general manager of the Padres at the time and I remember that happened during winter meetings and these days it feels like these trades. Take sixty years to get done. Everyone breaks down every.

"Have a situation in which the twenty seventeen world series will always be looked at as something different whether or not you put an asterisk or ask for the Trophy. Back it just. I don't think it makes that much difference. I think we did what we should do. That was we found the facts and we were transparent about them. I think it's really important for us to send a message to our fans that not only. Did we investigate and punish but we altered our policies in a way that will help. Make sure it doesn't happen again. There's so many pieces to this story. Buster only joins US live. Here is Red Sox camp this morning but buster the commissioner talking about putting measures in place to limit technology to ensure. Nothing like this happens again. What does baseball need to do? The need to draw very hard lines in fact. I'm surprised they haven't done that already. At the time they released the report about it would've helped baseball. It would help Manfred to just come out and say look any player who engages in this activity of using to steal signs is going to get kicked out of baseball now. He has the Union to deal with they in the past and a lot of issues. They have to negotiate. But I think on this particular issue it would have been more effective for Major League baseball to grab the high ground soon as possible. Because they've seen the damage is done to the sport. They've seen the backlash from other players. You hope that he does that sooner rather than later. So there's been an enormous amount of criticism directed at the commissioner and at others. How would you assess what is a fair assessment of the way baseball has handled this situation? Yeah Greenie he's made mistakes and I think it would really help him as it would have helped the Astra. Just come out and knowledge that in particular you remember the Apple Watch situation in the middle of September in two thousand seventeen. Manfred put out a statement saying if anyone does going forward. They're going to be in trouble and the answer is treated him like apparent. Basically saying yeah. Okay Dad whatever and they plowed ahead and continue to do that and I think with the benefit of twenty twenty hindsight. It's clear rob at that time needed to come down with hard lines and I think it'd be important for him to come out and say yes. I haven't handled this as well as I should have. And finally buster. Where do the Astros go from here? I think grainy that they need to stop worrying about trying to save the legacy. That's already squandered you reference Carlos Correa and what he said over the weekend trying to absolve Jose. Altuve basically saying yeah. We might have cheat in the first second and third inning. But we didn't in that fifth inning. Rally that silly. That's lost them. What's more important I think for the Astros? Moving forward is to prepare for this unprecedented situation. The unprecedent reaction to GonNa get when they go on the road this year. They ought to call Barry Bonds. Ask him how did you thrive in the face of all that booming? Call Roberto Alomar. Get sports mental coaches in to talk to the players in talking with players with other teams. They think this is going to be an enormous challenge for the Astros Day after day after day to deal with that negative reinforcement. Now you can see a buster we have Jeff Passan and many others out there covering force and buster. We will stay close with you. Thank you very much. Meanwhile Laura back to the NFL. Yeah.

"KNB are six eighty the sports leader Dave found the the walk off base hit there from Edgar into in the nineteen ninety seven World Series scoring Craig counsel brewers current manager to win the World Series for the ninety seven Marlins relevant now because yesterday BUSTER only put out the the Seattle Mariners right now are joining the ninety three Padres the ninety eight Marlins and then Dave's favorite the one thousand nine hundred thirty four Philadelphia athletics on a list of the most complete tear downs in baseball history. Already gone from an eighty nine win. Mariners team James Paxton Robinson, Edwin d as Mike sue Nino, Alex. Won the Cossio and pesos here is the guy the lefty they sent to the to the Philadelphia Phillies in pays us actually had a great season this year. James pays us whose name a lefty two eight eight or one point two four whip in fifty innings pitched forty five strikeouts. Incredible stuff there. Good lefty edition there for the Phillies who are stacking their bullpen as well. As getting gene Seger. But then I was like, okay. So the ninety three Padres. Let's go back and look at what they've done it should tell you. The jackets are nowhere near doing anything. Like this like the giants are not in a tear down. They're not in a complete rebuild far has decided he's at least go to build with some of the core of young players giants have and some of the some of the veteran players they have the holdovers from the World Series team. So if you look at the ninety three Padres, though, they get a new ownership group and the Padres were all that bad in ninety two eighty two and eighty but check this out, Dave, they unload Jerry Sheffield who has a twenty three year old had competed for a triple crown. Gary Sheffield was playing third base back then he was like a shortstop in the minors. But get this Dave after the ninety two season. They trade Gary Sheffield who would hit. It three thirty with thirty home runs and one hundred RBI is get this one. This is the blew my mind in five hundred fifty seven at bats. He struck out forty times forty times in five hundred and fifty seven at bats over six hundred twenty plate appearances. Why would you want to get rid of that? Well, you can't keep them. They were trying to cut they were trying to cut contract is what they wanted. So they trade Gary Sheffield they also trade one of their starting pitchers thirteen wind thirteen game with her Craig efforts from ninety two outfielder Darrin Jackson, and then by the way in July of ninety three. They flip. Fred mcgriff. Totally screw the giants. They were like oh. By the way giants. We're going to middle finger you on our way out the door. Fred McGriff goes to Atlanta ninety three a hundred and three wins for the giants. The rest is history. And then in ninety eight the big tear down to the Marlins. I just remember this going down they win the World Series. And the guy owned blockbuster. Didn't he was he the he was the CEO of the Marlins of the owner of the Marlins Wayne highs Inga there you go the late Wayne, zinc. Okay. I believe I believe. I Murphy him yet. Go ahead and say, he's gone. I wanna I'm gonna go out on a limb and say, he's gone. They win the World Series. They unload Moise Salou Kevin Brown Robinson, Al lighter Dennis cook. And then they trade Bobby Baena an Jerry Sheffield to the dodgers for Mike Piazza. Remember that everybody forgets Piazza played forty five games for the Marlins in ninety eight and then they shift off Piazza and plays a month and a half in in Florida. And then that's it are you are correct. Wayne, high Zanga passed away this year RIP Wayne high Zanga he owned blockbuster Wayne waste management auto nation. I mean, he owned pretty much everything. I think the only reason I think I remember hearing that and I couldn't remember his name. Just remember that. He I read an article about it. It must have been this year. Because Dave there's still a it's like a novelty shop up in up in. I think it's Portland area. Seems like a Portland thing. The last block yesterday you've seen that. Yeah. I saw thing on it. I I don't think it's actually owned by a corporation. I believe that's why I heard about it was that Wayne highs Inca passed away. And then they put out an article saying, you know, former you know, and World Series owner, whatever weight is in good is. But they tell the story about how there's a totally independent blockbuster in Portland who has they got there. There. They defected or whatever. From the company, however, work they open up their own, but people up in up in Portland love it they show up and they do the blockbuster thing. Like you normally would on a Friday night, personally, sit on my couch with my my Roku, and I just hate net. Flicks. I don't need to go to a blockbuster to get my movies. But yeah, the Wayne high Zinger put the team together Vinnie tore it down giants, of course, benefactors here when when coming up on both. I guess if you can call leave on a benefactor, you get Levant Hernandez any get robbed that the final blockbuster is in bend Oregon up to bend, Oregon stopping the blockbuster and be kind rewind. L stop, Dave. And I think you're say of a minor league baseball team up there to the bend, Oregon. Beavers? I wanna say is a is a minor league team up there out to the cache creek text line six five O says I cannot believe on the Ninety-three Padres. You did not mention they traded the best second baseman of all time. Roberto Alomar forgot to mention that too. Yeah. It was just a list of guys I was rubbing running off from that roster. Who were traded the Gary Sheffield one just blew my mind more because of what he had done the season before again, three thirty thirty homers one hundred ribs, and he struck a forty times you had a core of young players, by the way. In the in in the ninety two season before they unload all these players in ninety three. They had a problem where they drafted Todd Helton and could not sign him. They couldn't sign their second round draft choice. And then I think the following year or coming up right after that they signed the or they they drafted first baseman Derrek Lee and couldn't lock him up. So you think about the quarter soda young players? They might have had Sheffield Fred McGriff directly. Todd Helton thinking about the hall of famers potential hall of famers on that list. And they just unloaded them for no reason, I taught Helton played quarterback at Tennessee. He was the one who Peyton Manning replaced. Great knowledge. They've four zero eight says go pistons. I'm not sure what that's about ninety five my wife from the four hundred eight. Yeah. Yeah. That's probably my wife go pistons piston we're from Detroit. She's checking her on the on the Detroit not say hi to my husband or anything go pistons stucco, Cavs, no orders doing out to Cleveland and brought you do not root for anything in Ohio. Yeah. There you go nine to five. Speaking of says how about Jim Harbaugh's the next head coach of the Packers. I don't think so. Hardball with Aaron Rodgers. What are the weirder personalities and sports, right? I mean, the the thing with his with his family, and all that stuff is is one thing. But it just seems like the relationship between he and McCarthy seems so good. And then it seems so bad. You can't really tell. Sometimes he's got attitude. Sometimes he's he's a he's all all forthcoming, and I don't know Aaron Rodgers a weird personality. I don't think you would put a guy like Jim Harbaugh there. I'm thinking, Josh mcdaniels is the guy you want. Yes. Somebody who's almost like his own age. Well. They could hit it off you need somebody who is going to respect for sure. And Josh mcdaniels. I mean, again, not going to take a job that he doesn't think he's going to be successful at withdrew his name from forty Niner consideration a couple of years ago. The one question is whoever takes this job can they rebuild the Aaron Rodgers you got to go find the next guy because you're not going to be able to go through a generation of Green Bay Packers football and not have a winning team. And not have a cornerstone quarterback really with the way that team has gone sort of think of them like the forty Niners for a quarterback's. They've had bark star. And of course, Rogers, and and Brett Hundley, Sean Kaiser all the greats Don McAliskey the magic man forget, Scott McCloy. Of course, who who was the guy that the guy who threw for like six hundred five hundred yards on the Flynn. Matt Flynn billion dollar contract with Seattle and only played like four or five games. Signed a big contract. Already locked on week seventeen. Methylene comes out throws for like over five hundred yards gets a huge contract with Seattle. And then they cut his ass because they had Russell Wilson. Many shows up down here in Oakland plays a game or two and I think he gets benched for Derek Carr. I believe it's the bend Oregon elks two oh nine checks, and I feel like they might have been the beavers. The the the minor league baseball team. Everything changes in minor league. Baseball constantly from your name to your affiliation. I had there's a the best team of our best. Name. The Lansing lug nuts about that. I'll go with the Modesto nuts. I liked that one to keep those feet moving. Stay inbounds bleed that clock. Get up slow. We'll get you over the hump and into Thursday Dave whose on deck. Murph embody Joel coming up next on the sports leader. NBR's San.
