Next generation drive-in theaters are here!

"TRIBECA. A company founded by actor Robert Deniro and his producing partner Jane Rosenthal. They are staging a summer July drive in festival, offering new films like Palm Springs, classics like back to the future, and Jerry Maguire and stand up comedy on the big screen. And then the fall Tribeca is bringing NFL game so the drive in as well. Now my screening of Palm Springs started at five PM at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California. When I asked if that wasn't perhaps a Typo as you need dark skies to be able to project the film under the big screen, I was given a firm. No, we use LCD screens which are viewable from the cars I was told LCD like the TV's. We buy and put in our living rooms now to listen to the audio. They don't put a speaker on your car door like they used to, but instead they. They ask you to tune into a specific portion of the FM radio dial or use a Wifi signal to hear it on your phone. Food came from gourmet food trucks part of the rose. Bowl, which had several screens going at once now it's funny, because just a few years ago, drive ins were absolutely dead, only used for flea markets, and the like on Sundays and occasionally in very rural markets. They might shows movies. So I love their back, and I hope they make it. However I parked too close to the screen and could only see seventy percent of it unless I yanked my car chair back all the way. And the LCD looked bad as good as a TV does in a really bright room in other words, not so hot. The audio was great, but I had to keep the car running for two hours in order to play the FM that and it was a hot night so I need the air conditioning on as well and yes I burn through a bunch of gas, but you know I was glad to get out and I know now to park way in the back next time and to go to a later show when it's dark and most importantly to fill up on gas before arrive. TRIBECA is not the only company working on reviving the drive in there are several others around the country. Be sure to try it out and support them because who knows how long it's going to be before we can go out to the movies again.

Truth vs Hollywood

"Welcome to truth versus Hollywood I'm David, Chen and A. Truth versus Hollywood is look at films that are based on a true story, but we don't just talk about the film. We also talk about that true story. On this podcast will touch on what really happened. How that differs from the film and why and we're not just talking, heads will hear about the true story through interviews from experts, witnesses and people who were involved in it. It's both the real facts and the real facts are l. fix. What do you think that Joanna I loved it today Ridge? Today! We're talking about Martin. Scorsese's classic film Goodfellas Goodfellas is based on the book Wiseguy. Nicholas Pathology which, in turn is based on life of Mobster Henry Hill Hill was actually alive when the film came out and was very pleased with his film based on him, and as we'll talk about later, it definitely had an effect on his life. Pathology worked with Scorsese to write the screenplay and the film was. was a complete. It nominated for six Academy Awards and won one Joe Pesci for supporting actor. It's considered one of the best gangster movies of all times. If I put it on their list of one hundred years, one hundred movies and the Library of Congress decided that it was culturally important and added it to its preservation archives all right well. Let's get to the movie itself. It stars Ray Liotta. Hill Robert Deniro as Jimmy, the Gent Conway, who's based on Jimmy the Gent? Burke Joe Pesci as Tommy devito based on Tommy desimone Paul Sorvino Paul cicero based on Paul Vario and Lorraine Bracco as Henry's wife Karen Hill. Many real life figures at this movie was based off of an apparently Henry Hill ended up getting paid five hundred eighty thousand dollars because of the use of historian, this movie, which is a lot of money to pay to a mobster who has done very horrible things you know in watching this movie again. John Robinson one of the things that. I kind of realized you know or reflected on is the fact that we've been lost you decades seen so many movies about bad men, doing bad things, and that this movie kind of one of the prototypical examples of how they can be glorified an elevated in this. Movie makes that lifestyle look really glamorous while at the same time depicting some of the negative consequence lifestyle, but at the same time it does rubbed me the wrong way that like the people who are involved often are rewarded. We also saw this Martin. Scorsese's Will Wall Street as well. Similar dynamic, there so I'm kind of curious like as you're reflecting on your overall experience of watching the movie, and now that we know little bit more about what happened with the real life characters, and we're GONNA. Talk about it during the courses podcast like. How did it strike you that? This is based off of Real Person I. Think Scar says he couldn't have picked a better release. Go subject to to glum onto here than Henry Hill because though he is gangster and he's fully involved in this gangster life, he is a the likability of this character, which is really what's Cortesi was going for I've seen interviews. We talked about the nineteen thirty two scarface, which was the first time he ever saw. Gangsters depicted as really likable. When you Henry Hill. And he does terrible things, but he's a gangster who is a little squeamish. We see this the film and it's corroborated by true story of his life. He was violent crimes, but he wasn't a a mass murderer and You know the the charisma of him. I think is really important. He wasn't one of the most vicious people in this story. And so I think you're making good point that like. If you're GONNA choose an entry way into this world. Henry Hill is probably the ideal candidate in this case so. Well, the film opens with three men driving in a car, having a seemingly normal evening. It's then revealed that there is a captive in the trunk and than shortly after him, we mmediately get Henry's voiceover with the iconic line as far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster. It's one of the most. Openings and Awesome History Joanna Robinson after nearly three decades. How effective did you find this opening? Well, it's funny. I did not see I was eight years old when fellows came out, or maybe nine so I did not see it in theaters and I didn't see it until later in life and but by then it already seats into the culture because it was so iconic. You know there's. Maniacs good feathers, pigeon parody, and like all sorts of stuff, so I'm going to wear of the beats of it, even though the first exposure to goodfellas was. Is what you're saying. Thousand percent absolutely. But you know so by the time I had seen it. I had also seen so many things that had imitated it, and this is true of like so many of our great films like by the time you get around to watching it. Maybe you seen a bunch of people. Knock it off and so you're like well. How groundbreaking? Is this

Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert Deniro according to deadline the deal which calls for Apple. Screen Actors Guild Reveals Award Nominees

"Welcome to the frame Steven Cuevas filling in for John Horn our broadcast was preempted today for special coverage of the presidential impeachment proceedings. But we bring you this special podcast addition to talk about the screen actors Guild Award nominations which were announced today and what better person to call on John Horn. WHO's on assignment assignment in New York? Hey John Hey Steven how are you. Okay so let's start with the nominees for outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role. What do we got so the nominees? He's were Christian. Bale from Ford versus Ferrari Leonardo di Caprio for once upon a time in Hollywood Adam driver from marriage story Joaquin Phoenix from joker car. And then probably the surprise in the category is turned Edgerton. Who Played Elton John and rocket man? If you start looking at who isn't in I think. Probably the most was notable exclusion as Robert Deniro for his lead role in the Irishman. He is getting a lifetime. Achievement Award Screen Actors Guild Award. So maybe that was part of the math but Jonathan Pryce was not nominated from two popes. Adam Sandler was not nominated from uncut gems and also left out of the competition was Antonio Banderas for pain and glory. Yeah it was a little surprised to see Bandera slept out you and I talked about that film and I think we agree that it was kind of career. Defining performance Let's move on to the lead actress. Category Who have their we have Cynthia Areso from? Harriet Scarlett Johansson from marriage story. The neon go from us. Charlie's therein Erin from bombshell and Renee Zellweger from Judy not a lot of surprises there. There were two women of color. The surprise I guess was that that search or Ronin was not nominated for little women some people thought Aquafina might have gotten in from the farewell. In fact little women did really badly today in the screen actors Guild L. Dominations and how about supporting role in the mail categories some pretty juicy performances. There are some really good pegues. Jamie Fox was nominated for Justice mercy. Tom Hanks Sup- Played Fred. Rogers and a Beautiful Day in the neighborhood. A couple of actors from the Irishman Al Pacino. And Joe Patchy and then Brad Pitt from once upon a time in Hollywood I said earlier. Jonathan Pryce was not nominated for playing Pope Francis in the two popes. Anthony Hopkins was not nominated for playing Pope Benedict in the two popes as well and this is also one of those weird categories in terms of. WHO's supporting and WHO's lead? It's one of those things where the studios can kind of say to the screen actors guild and the academy and other words as we think. This person is a lead this person's supporting I mean. They're two popes are mostly onscreen for the the same time. And you have Brad Pitt. Who is up for supporting actor? Leonardo DiCaprio for lead actor and once upon a time in Hollywood. I think he put a stop. Watch on it Leo. Joe Might have like twenty seconds or screen time. I don't know it feels like that's kind of tricky. Math and Tom Hanks's probably star of a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Even though he shares there's Screen time with another character again. The studios got to decide of the actors. Don't vote somebody in that category than they don't get nominated yes. Some people might be especially puzzled by the Tom. Hanks category for him winding up in the supporting actor. Can you explain that a little bit like why why that is well. I think if you look at that that film you can say that even though. It's a movie about Fred Rogers. It's really about the journalist whose life is transformed by meeting with Fred Rogers and something similar happened. In the supporting actress. Category according to Variety Kathy Bates is in this film by Clint Eastwood. Call Richard Jewel rule and she's been getting some awards attention in the supporting actress. Category but according to Variety Warner brothers mistakenly submitted fitted her as a lead actress for the screen actors Guild Awards and she didn't get nominated and she didn't get nominated for supporting actress because they had submitted committed error in probably the wrong category. Well who else do we have in the category of supporting actress. Another pretty strong category. Laura dern from marriage stories Scarlett Johansson another nomination for Joe Joe Rabbit this time and then to actors from bombshell Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie and finally Jennifer Lopez from Hustler's right. We have so we have Scarlett Johansson nominated for both lead and supporting actress rare A little bit but you know pretty. Good Year for Scarlett Johansson. I don't think you can fault any of those performances. I think they were both really strong. And you know she's playing opposite. Visit Adam driver. Who was nominated for marriage story? Joe Joe Rabbit as we're GONNA say in just a second got a little bit more attention as well so both nominations. I'd say we're served in both. Were in really good films. Let's finish up with the outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. Is it true that this winter is often a predictor for the Academy Award Best Picture winner in historically. Yes that has been true but if you look at the last two best picture winner shape of water and green book they weren't even even nominated for the Sag Ensemble Award so yes. It is a good thing to be nominated for in terms of Academy Awards because it's important to note the actress. Branch ranch is the biggest branch in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. So what the actors do in the screen actors. Guild awards is often a good harbinger of what the Oscar Asker voters might do. So the nominees for on Samba were bombshell. Which I think is a little bit of a surprise? Good news for that film. The Irishman Joe Joe Rabbit once upon a time time in Hollywood and the real surprise in this category was parasite which is a Korean film. It's only the second foreign language film in Sag History. The other one one was life is beautiful to get a nomination for the ensemble award. I think it's really important for parasite. I think it's interesting. THAT MARRIAGE BRIDGE STORY WASN'T NOMINATED FOR ENSEMBLE. Neither was little women and so all the power seemed to be going to parasite right now and I would have to say say once upon a time in Hollywood and the Irishman well there you have it this year's screen actors Guild Award nominations in the film category. John you may resume get your New York theatre going. Thank you Steve. And I'll go do it right now

Joe Joe Rabbit Hollywood Harriet Scarlett Johansson Guild Award Fred Rogers Tom Hanks Jonathan Pryce Leonardo Di Caprio Elton John Adam Sandler New York Brad Pitt Academy Of Motion Picture Arts John Horn Guild L. Dominations Steven Cuevas Joe Patchy Robert Deniro Edgerton Joaquin Phoenix

"The sad film award nominations around correspondent Jim Roop says the Irishman gets a lot of them just like Monday's golden globe nominations out but you know and Joe Pesci receive supporting role SAG award nominations for the Irishman but Robert deniro was left out of the lead role nominations category he will be receiving a life achievement honor however and the Irishman is nominated in the outstanding cast category which is equivalent to a Best Picture nod so if it wins there deniro does have a chance to walk away with another trophy all of which will be handed out January

Critics’ Choice: ‘The Irishman,’ ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ Lead Movie Nominations

"Two hours talk to Kevin car this morning good morning Kevin Kevin Kerr our entertainment guy who has the the nominations out today from the critics choice association the CC a it's the twenty fifth time you guys have done this and I guess that you have you must have voted for some of these nominations right good morning Michael yeah I'm actually pretty happy with how the nominations have come out we've got them ready for the critics choice awards which happens on Sunday January twelfth at seven PM on the C. W. and this is it's it's what's leading the list is the Irishman with fourteen nominations which is of course marks were Stacey's latest almost Robert deniro Al Pacino Joe Pesci all getting nominations for acting others also once upon a time in Hollywood Quinn turned taking those look back at that what could happen in the sixties start with twelve nominations along with little women getting nine nominations nineteen seventeen which is Sam Mendes's the upcoming World War one epic I am a marriage story with eight Jo Jo rabbit the joker in Paris like each get seven so it's been spread around for the nominations it looks like there's a lot of great movies on Netflix yes speaking of spreading things around you got a couple of actors you're getting nominations both for movie and for television work which I think is interesting well yeah you got Laura Dern whose whose you guys having a bit of a resurgence in her career she's got both for big little lies a marriage story the critics choice nominations include both television and movies and another big win is is for streaming not only is that happening with of course big nominations for Netflix of Amazon it on the chart television side but the Irishman is is that a huge win for Netflix getting that many nominations I think there are almost thirty this twenty nine nominations for Netflix alone with you in the film categories did speaking of the Irishman so we mentioned Dinero Ficino Joe Pesci from that for Best Actor Pacino at and I guess Joe Pesci best Supporting Actor in it's a very different performers from him it's not the over the top crazy guy very restrained in and is that what it took to get him out of retirement well I think working with Martin Scorsese again was a big deal working with Robert De Niro yeah but it did give them the opportunity because they do a de aging process digitally so this movie is also getting visual effects awards but that gives a batch you chance to play a very different character which is I think what got him such traction this time around I think the biggest problem he's got is he a member of the channel might split the vote for fans of the Irish men and might end up going to somebody else yeah well merit story you know coming in with a lot of nominations and including I guess a screen plays as well so I I I I know I've heard that this is a real predictor for the Oscars how is that does that real yeah I mean it's nothing thirty six actually we got the golden globe nominations showing up later today which are also seen as somewhat of a projector the reason this one China other critics choice awards a lines a little bit more is because they don't split out drama versus comments on are you voted for the nominations do you also vote for the final

We're letting him get away with something he can't get away he's just you just got to move forward and take chances tactically or strategically. Might it feels you know what happens. It'll give him more ammunition later but he has done something wrong he has to pay. Hey for that. He has to be put on notice pay for it. Even if the Republicans will not finally go through with impeaching him everybody else has gone on through the symbolic motions of he has to be held accountable period. And you want to talk about the two films that you're in and just sort of make a kind of a connection here you you know. Obviously you play the guy who the moment with the man who's becoming the joker the kind of pivotal moment where he fully embraces that sort of negative identity entity is with your character but he also is Egged on by other people to do the chaotic things that he's doing where people who are angry and feel disaffected and so they pushed him to keep doing more bad things. And then your new movie. In the Irishman this idea of donald trump sort of having a gangsterism around him of of behaving like a gangster or maybe behaving at the behest of gangsters like the leader of Russia. Those things do seem to tie to him right because it is. It's is curious to me why people follow him. I'm I am completely. I have no idea why they follow him. Because he's not even a good gangster he's he can't even keep his word about anything he's I think in the real gangster world he wouldn't last long he lashed long in his own little real real estate world where he's the boss because he's the boss and he heard it all that money and he's he's a fool but in the real world he who wouldn't last long that's my feeling. Yeah it's interesting because people seem to be afraid of him but it isn't clear to me why when you ask. Why are people afraid? They're like because he'll tweet at me. Yeah he what bothers me more. What concerns me more is that someone will come along this a lot? Worse Don trump. He's just a to He's done but when you get somebody who comes along who smart. Who knows how to work it and is more material and can be sympathetic? When they need to be sympathetic he has none of that? He has not one speck of sympathy empathy for anything or anybody. So he's just stupid to she doesn't know and in a way we're lucky in a certain way we're lucky because because we can see it so clearly but as I say I'm worried generation two-three from now this is going to happen again and he will be a bit of a teacher feature of what he did wrong. This other person will feel that they can do it this way. That's what really bothers me more. I want to ask you the question. I asked everyone that I interviewed for the first book that I just did and I asked everyone. What do you think the country looks like after trump? We have a lot of making up to do reparations to to do with countries because if we don't have a president who really can show that we're we're growing up and repairing sincerely the damage. That has been done personally. I think someone like Buddha judge would be a capable of doing that young but he's got all the qualifications even even Bloomberg I think he's a grownup he's run this city for three three terms. He's grown up and he knows so he's an executive he's he hasn't done everything perfectly but he's very very good. He'll get us out of this mess because we are in one because we owe it to the rest of the world to do the right thing and we're not going to do unless we can show them that we've we've got leadership not only in the next four years after twenty twenty but after four years after that and after that yeah as a fellow New Yorker I reached out to you for your support Mayor Bloomberg. No he has a little bit. We sort of touched on an he hasn't asked asked me for. We just talk because I wanted him at one point two two run I thought he should. I was disappointed that he finally didn't but I think he sees right now that he ask the jump in because he has to jump in. Are you concerned that the idea yet. Another billionaire coming in. And saying you'll say I mean that was trump's theme trump's not a billionaire he's a fake president he calls everything else fake because he knows he's fake it projects is a classic. I don't know what you call it. Everything that he says is that negative about other things. Other people is what he's saying about himself so he he's he's a loser he he is a genuine loser hand and get somebody who's real like Bloomberg who's worth I think over fifty billion or maybe a lot more and this guy he says he's worth three something billion billion. We don't even know if he's just a total huckster hustler. Yeah and he and I think one of the things that angers him probably the most people like you people from Hollywood which he craves to be a part of your world he craves to be a part of the world of the of the females of the of the people that are actors or athletes if he wants to be a part of your world and the rejection Shen from people like you I think is one of the thing that bugs in the most. How could you not want? I mean when I was in New York before before he was doing all we want to have anything to do with him. I mean I heard he's around. He wants to take a picture do nothing to do with him. He's a fool. Everybody knew that but I mean now he he'd call up the tabloids leads and say he's the agent he called Forbes magazine. That's crazy yeah and not bought it. Yeah absolutely last night before I go to the movie. What do you make Guiliani at at the I mean I you lost his mind I think he's he's what a shame because he had something going and he just prostituted himself to work with trump? Guys of how could he do that. I I have no understanding of. How could he was a guy who used to prosecute people the Rico Act this show on and now? He's part of a criminal family is. He's the Tom Hagen. It's an amazing turn for him. Let me talk about this movie. So the Irishman was just reading a little bit about it. One of the things that I think is fascinating and I did not realize you don't process it in your mind because you've been in so many incredible movies will be so many award winning winning winning films and you've been so hard for them you Deniro de Niro Pacino. Scorsese yourself Al Pacino and Scorsese had not work together in this way before. No we when we started doing this project Monday night talked about Al playing Hoffa and it was built. It'd be a great idea. So that's how that came about and Joe Patchy and so on is the Buffalo Lena character even Joe Patchy coming back because he hasn't been in a lot of films lately lately. That's pretty exciting. It was well it was the ideal situation that I felt. We felt if we could get it. Me Joe Al Mardi Directing and people people have been obsessing over this is on aging or aging. That people are talking about where they took you back in time. I guess you'd call aging Mardi sort of I think he made up the phrase youth of available considerable public. That's pretty cool and tell us a little bit about this story. Well it's about A. I mean what what happened. Just a little backstory. We had been working on another project for many years. He wanted to get something going. Finally we came up with something about an aging retired Hitman from the west coast so Mari was showing me Old Films Jan film in Black and white as looking for the style all that he wanted to do it in and I said well. I've got to read this book that I spoke with Eric Roth a few years about one I came out called. I heard Japan houses. And it's about a hitman and so on and maybe it'll be good for research and when I read it. I said Marty we got together. I said you gotta read this because I think this is probably more like what we would want to I do. Yeah I mean the idea that you know this the lives of these characters even touch on the Kennedy assassination and providing the guns that were used to kill Kennedy. I mean this is sort of expands beyond on just the sort of unique story that you're telling yeah had a lot of is have these characters like Hoffa even Joe Gallo and the Kennedy certain size historical size to it but a very not a small but a personal story about a guy who's loyal to both people. Oh who very powerful and the dilemma. That is in actually but to me said in a very real way I can just stop by the way. He wrote the book that the dialogue at all all the scenes and everything been some people said well. You know that's not really true. That's not how it happened. But as Mardi says it's it's a story that we tell title in our way and it's not it might not be accurate though. I personally think that there's a good chance it would be accurate and if we find out later that it was somebody else happened another way. That's great do another film that back possibly but it's okay. I'd like to find out what really happened. This isn't the way it did happen. Well I can wait to see it. It's at the Balasko here. In New York. The BALASKO was a theater theater. So this is a first for the Balasko gets over one hundred years old and it. It plays eight times a week. The way of play would play. It's called show. It's not anymore but it's another movie theaters around the city around the country. Then it'll be on a Netflix. Want Robert Deniro. It's so cool talking to you. Thank you so much for being here in the new film. The Irish is playing in select theaters as we just mentioned right. Now we'll be on Netflix. In on November twenty seven th and also go see joker it's so good as well

Netflix and Theater Owners Go To The Mattresses Over Scorsese's Irishman

"Welcome to the frame and Stephen cliff us filling in for John horn Martin Scorsese's highly awaited mob boss drama the Irishman hits theaters today well you know what is the situation going on now for big business and the government they're trying to pull us down you might be demonstrating the failure to show appreciation seems the the Netflix film stars Robert deniro Al Pacino and Joe Pesci but seeing the three and a half hour long at beginning theater will take some effort Scorsese had hoped for a wide release but after negotiations stalled between Netflix and movie theater owners the film will only be seen in eight theaters in New York and Los Angeles before heading to the streaming service on November twenty seventh Nicole Sperling is media reporter for The New York Times covering Hollywood and streaming and she has the backstory on how things fell apart hi Nicole hi how are you Steve good good Nicole good you first please explain what theater owners were hoping for in terms of the Irishman's release I mean I think with what theater owners were hoping for was that Netflix was going to get in line and follow the rules that the traditional studios have with the theater chains and you know that is asking a lot for a company that doesn't necessarily believe in a theatrical window that is a subscriber first company that wants to make their subscribers happy by bringing them their content as soon as possible so what they wanted them to do was agreed to a seventy two day release which means that not necessarily the movie would play in theaters for seventy two days but that there would be an exclusivity period for that long before they would put it on their streaming service and that's really asking a lot for a company like Netflix I mean what ideally what Netflix like to see I mean no theatrical release at all no I mean I think Netflix is coming around to the idea of some limited theatrical release some of their consumers want to go see their movies on the big screen in a Martin scorcese gangster movie seems to fall into that category but they don't spend a lot on marketing so what happens in the traditional studio model is you have to put your movie into theaters you have to spend you know thirty five million dollars at least on a wide release to get people attention so they will know it's in theaters to go see it and then if you have to wait these seventy two to ninety days that are required by the theater chains when it does hit the next window whether that's a streaming platform or pay TV or whatever it is often times studios have to pay again to market the movie so it's really a lot of money but it also there is a requirement for Oscars is you have to have a movie in a theater for a week to be eligible that is part of the rules well after the Irishman start streaming on Netflix on November twenty seventh will there be the option for theater chains to give it a more wider release and and show it in theaters then for for those of us who may want to have that cinematic experience Netflix will keep it in theaters once it opens on their service as long as the chains want to keep it in it's just a limited number of theater chains that will play the movie the big giants AMC regal Cinemark those are the guys who are refusing to play by Netflix's rules which are much more truncated release windows and they're accustomed to Nicole Sperling is media reporter for The New York Times covering Hollywood and streaming with Irishman showing now at the Belasco in New York and the Egyptian here in Los Angeles before expanding to a handful of others what can you tell us about why those specific theaters were selected as far as the Belasco that's a Broadway theater that shows Broadway plays this is actually one of the first times that a movie is going to be debuting in that theater and it's kind of terrific in a sense that like it's a big palace in there it has a thousand seats in it it makes you feel like you're in this you know old timey kind of environment there's not a lot of single screens left in New York City so they're kind of recreating the old time Hollywood feel on that screen as for the Egyptian in Los Angeles that theater is currently owned by American Cinematheque it's a his work location but Netflix is actually in the process of trying to buy that theater it's an independent movie house they want to own it so that on week nights they can put their movies in and have a vents and do whatever they want and then on the weekends American Cinematheque would still program their films as they see fit and they're kind of retrospectives and the repertory theatre that they are well fear owners were trying to make the case to Netflix that you know if you truncate the theatrical release you're gonna lose out how much money are are are we talking about potentially well they use the departed as their example which was Scorsese's two thousand six movie and that made three hundred million dollars worldwide now the studio doesn't get all three hundred million dollars they split that evenly with the theaters and then when you add in marketing costs it goes lower than that as well but there's still a you know a significant profit that could be made it's a could be because it's also a three and a half hour movie so how many people are going to be rushing to the theater to see it I mean the film has received rapturous reviews critics are loving it so that interest to see I think is high but there's also the risk factor that's involved too and I think Netflix has been less interested in getting involved in that business because it is so risky and it's much safer to put it on your service and then a month from now tell everybody how many people and watched it right there were similar release negotiations last year over the theatrical run of another major Netflix project and that's all fine so quite owns Roma can you remind us how that agreement check out and how it may or may not have influenced how this deal over the Irishman was hammered out it was the same kind of situation where the big chains refused to play at the smaller ones the landmarks the Alamo they played the movie and for some of those theater chains the movie did really well for them and it stayed in theaters for a long time well as streaming giants become more powerful in the big budget feature film industry will movie theaters become secondary venues you know for special films well it depends on who you're talking to I mean at this moment in time Disney who is you know launching their service in two weeks is a huge proponent of the theatrical window probably most of the movies that you went and saw most of Americans when Sonya last year were Disney movies whether they came from Pixar or Lucasfilm or Marvel those are the movies that make a ton of money at the box office and they stay in theaters for a very long time so Disney is a big fan of the of the theatrical window now how that changes we'll see there also putting a lot of money behind their Disney plus service so that needs to work out really well for them as well and who knows if product will be shifting to the service and hopes to you know bolster their subscriber numbers a lot of the streamers are backed by a traditional studios so they're gonna have to figure that out as it may go forward Nicole Sperling is media reporter for The New York Times covering Hollywood hand streaming the call thanks is a is a pleasure thank you for your time I appreciate

"You know, I try not to look at sets because you get these preconceived notions of how things should be. And you know, if you need to shut the door, and it's the door to your house going shut it ten times. So you know, how to shut that door. If it's not the door to your house. Don't don't touch it. Because you wouldn't you right? Then it'll feel natural. And it was my very first lesson and church. And sure enough I think that when I look around that marketplace that sort of slack jawed wide-eyed face. I'm doing it's just natural natural kind of them. All now, did you even get to meet Michelle Pfeiffer or Robert deniro? I know I didn't know I I did not get to meet any of this. I met I remember meeting Claire Danes and Sienna Miller, which who's the thing. I was most interested in at the time. I think as a twenty year old boy. But I did not get to them. But I did get to to get to what with deniro many, many many years later in in a sort of much more intimate setting the film we worked on this dreadful but bought everything's an experience. But everything's inexperience on to do a couple of scenes with just my myself and deniro and once with myself scenario narrow and and dying Keaton, and if I might opt to parents, and and there's there's just one little moment in the film, which I actually really do like it gives me a present on. It's an and it was extremely powerful. And he was extremely kind and supportive. That's nice to hear that film was called the big wedding. It was. It was it was it went did happen is the romantic comedy, say save the comedy and the remnants. But I think still one of the most extraordinary costs of any film ever to be put together. I I could not believe that I was allowed to be included on that list. And I go to work with Robin Williams, which he was always, you know, one of the true greats of. Profession film in general. And so to have that I wouldn't obviously wouldn't wouldn't change it for the world..

But it should have done better than it. Did it was last place in like it every in every category was last place. He even had one. But listen to the the the guests he had Terachi Henson on. And then he had Robert deniro on. Why would you book Robert deniro for talk show? The guy doesn't talk. You like interview. I mean, it's the same anything out ball was probably like, you know, was trying to get in because, you know, figuring Genero is anti Trump and Baldwin's anti trumps figured they get into a nice conversation about that. You know, Bob was probably like so. Bobby? Here's this question. Did you follow the the Cavanaugh? Hearings. Oh, really? Did you see the testimony of what do you think about the testimony of Dr Christine Ford? I think I think she I think he insulted a little bit. Little bit. She could go child but a little bit. That's to be the extent of the whole freaking interview. So yeah, I mean like nobody was watching it and considering the fact that Baldwin does this. This Trump impression that Trump obviously hates. "And the way I know this is if anyone has had a really, really bad nose bleed where the nurse is an idiot and is like just tilt, your head back which people think stops nosebleed. It does not stop nosebleed. All it does is change where the blood is going. Oh man. Another falsehood. Like, why is that a popular theory again, the worst for Senator nearly tilt, your head back does the first thing say. Pinch, a good nurse says pinch. Pinch Antara head back is what they say. And the reason they say that it's because they don't want you bleeding all over the nurse's office. But the issue is then when you have a kid who's like, got a real nosebleed was like really digging for gold or something. Now they're both bleeding through the nose and throwing up blood all over your office suite. Well, everybody now learned something at home parents. You know if you have kids, touch your head to head back. If you have a nose bleed, don't pick your nose that much, right? Yeah. Come on bleeding. And also don't drink the what of your enemies even if it contains strokes. Yeah, I thought that scene was really gross. I hated that just so much blood in the human body so much blood in the human body, the chance that like what he drank, even if you could get it into your system that way, the chance that what he drank would have any effect is zero. Okay. So another another war. McLean floor and then flew blood. Everything comes again saved, right? Because he has the end ZD in his systems able to fight and escape and make all the right moves. And that leads me to my final point here about the film which is the lesson of the movie. What are we taking away from this? Because at the end, I just felt like it's pro substance abuse, like the only thing that's good is in the movie everything. You know, there's never a solution where he has to find something in himself. Ryan, be courageous. When he sober, it's always just things are bad. I feel like shit the drug and it's not a tragedy that ends with him having to pay for his sin. Yeah, he is on top at the end of any Senator is going to be Senator more any is a claim novelist, what the lesson is here, don't trust your senators. Okay. Or people in charge or like the rich or I could. I could your Robert deniro sort of like a Warren Buffett, shirt Jones kind of guy, corporate titan. He's actually good. He's not doing any ends ET that. Yeah, it seems like it putting is kind of, you know, throwing his power arrays, definitely like got the Senator trying to get the Senator in his pocket. Yes, that's saying something about the power dynamics of this country. Believe me? Yes. Here's some looking for radical agenda doing right. You've got this guy who's essentially bipolar real bad. Okay. And when he's up, he's up when he's down, it's going to literally kill him. He learns from his ex wife that it's possible to essentially get off this drug without literally killing you. Her incredible advice, but she's not doing great. She's not doing great which you want to be like her at that moment. If you look at the way we treat most extreme cases of bipolar, one. The people who are at a point where they are no longer having these giant swings. They're not doing great, and it's really hard to keep people who have bipolar one on their medication because they missed the high so much because. Normal site shout out and a lot of buy in very creative people like had bipolar and had a very hard time taking their meds if they were offered meds at all, and ended up killing themselves like this is a, do you think the movie? So what I think is at the end of the movie when he explains that when you're when he had a man gaps OT managed to have a breakthrough where he somehow fixed they kinks. I took that to mean that metaphorically or actually he somehow managed to find a drug that levels him out. So he's not having these insane swings. He's not having dissociate of states..

"Like you know where i'm like yeah i'm doing some totally against when i'm like you know on our fake robert deniro method actors shit and like do remember like you had to do a lot of stuff because you done track like i remember asking you yet fuck away cup i was doing this track shading you you had to like work out and shit like that yeah it was intense man i mean john was john was intense back then you know he was young you just coming off this big movie boys in the hood and so it's just interesting because you know i heard this after the fact but like to pot he wanted to park to play that role and you know that you know that leonardo dicaprio was going to play my part that's crazy i didn't know that leonardo dicaprio was it was going to be to park and i was gonna play cole hauser's point that was locked into that okay co house or do you remember this do you remember the day they couldn't find him he was he didn't show up the set oh yeah and they were like what's going on and they were calling them before like everybody had a cellphone right they set someone to wherever he was staying and he was dead sleep here too i remember concert are wanna say a pink floyd concert i remember in whatever happened happened right you remember that i do remember coal it was it was crazy i just remember also remember like the set was like i knew i had certain things in my head that were written i remember the scene where we were doing the scene in the dorm room why pull a gun out on you and i'm like saying all this crazy shit i'm like i remember like it was like a prime it was especially at the time it was like a mostly black cetin you'll because it was singleton right and i remember it wasn't like ten people but people were like you're saying you know fuck this and this and we're doing take after take a month like how many have to hear that you the more i did it singleton like applaud like he was like keep going because everybody like i was like i was like fell alienated on this enough fucking enough right but i just remember one time when i was doing shit off camera i remember you looking at me like what like what as your at your head at the time like as an actor and like you've done so much since did you know what you were doing as an act like you had went to laguardia did you were you clear like what you are doing is actor was everything sort of like you learning because i i know i was learning on the job that's a great question i mean i think a new what i was trying to do what i was aiming towards you know and i felt a certain level of confidence in a new that i would commit right you know and so it's interesting to it's it's interesting to hear your thoughts because when i think back to them like i never considered that back then right you know what i mean like you kinda were alienated in a sense but you know i think about it and i'm never spoken to john about this but i wonder if he's sort of created that on purpose i think he did that we had that energy character and then so when they turn the cameras on that energies real and yeah but you know what's interesting and you never like you're like a low key dude like talking like you know it's not like i'm not fucking was just like yeah what's up it was cool but it was like talk to you about juice they don't want to like to ask you the questions that i'm getting ask you now as well man i mean we were just so fortunate i don't think i don't think any of us knew the power of what that story was about right at that time even when you think i mean you know fish burns like.

"It's about a taxi driver nail in unstable prostitute or something robert deniro was in that movie wasn't it's one of the greatest roles one of his greatest roles and have you seen meet the faulkners this is back when he was an actor right not a comedian not you know what gave him the credibility for me the faulkners well this was skinny scary edgy actor plays a taxi driver vietnam vet who's driving around new york city back in the early seventies totally cd scummy city right and he's he's just like disgusted by what he sees which i remember that time you know it was kind of gnarly used to think oh i wouldn't even want to go down to new york city because it's just too too messed up right crime too much everything and you know he's this movie is just filled with his like monologue you know he's writing this kind of half crazy half exactly accurate stuff in his things you know like he's but he's just can't wait for you know the some line like i can't wait for rain to come and wash away all the scum he's a completely awkward kind of loser you know he's not very smart he's not very he's completely socio awkward loner doesn't fit in but he's he's not any sets out to right some wrongs that he thinks are going on and oddly enough i i had watched movie in a while and i watched like the kind of climactic scene today just to try to remember what dissolve out it's really bizarre man it's the scene where he goes into of i should spoil it those warning year old movie.

"This dovetails very nicely this morning with a look and and you know keep in mind that from cuba north korea venezuela to the soviet union china they jail their political enemies it's what the left does it's not funny they've killed more people they make isis look like the red cross the left has murdered more than one hundred million maybe one hundred and forty million people since one thousand nine hundred seventeen we just crossed the one hundred year anniversary a few months ago more than one hundred million people and the people that don't murder down syndrome or something they murder everybody they kill everybody they destroy everything they steal everything that's who they are now there is robert deniro with all that good stuff chilling isis propaganda poster shows donald trump as prisoner in orange jumpsuit as terrorists threaten west with drive by shootings donald trump has photo shopped wearing the same orange jumpsuit many isis execution victims have worn a chilling new isis propaganda poster shows us president donald trump in chains trust in the same orange jumpsuit as so many of their execution victims now i just bring that up because the left and isis are very often on the same page those two stories go together in a disturbing sort of way you know the first question to ask before you make any big change in your life is this actually going to make things better well if you've heard about medishare which is a brilliant way of sharing healthcare costs you may have wondered will it work well one doctor dr stewart hoover wondered the same thing when he initially joined to save a lot of money the typical family saves about five.

"Government now before i begin this show which i haven't really begun yet i must outline where i'm coming from you gotta know my my my motivation motivation is loyal opposition there's a wonderfully important phrase in the british parliamentary form of government where they reference the loyal opposition i consider myself the loyal opposition with emphasis on the first word not the second i am extremely loyal to donald trump and donald trump's agenda but i oppose his bombing of syria for many reasons which i will explain today on the savage nation and so let's ask ourselves some questions if as the government tells us these facilities contain chlorine gas why didn't the chlorine gas explode after the tomahawk missile attack could it be because there was nothing in the buildings i mean if you know basic chemistry from your high school days i'll make an even simpler for you if you didn't take basic chemistry let's say you were like robert deniro and the thespian world and all you do was put on outfits and make believe you with someone else meaning you weren't an actor if you took high school chemistry you would know that chlorine is extremely ignited and if you mix it with other fuels may cause explosion and a container containing chlorine would explode in the heater fire and it's extremely poisonous and hazardous and hydrogen and chlorine mixtures by the way are can be exploded by almost any form of energy producing toxic and corrosive fumes of hydrochloric acid highly toxic fumes are released why am i telling you this well we all saw the tomahawks flying off the b one bombers right we got to practice our weapon our new weapons the manufacturer was very happy with how they worked they test them the way the stupa bombers were tested over gernika before world war two oh yeah third reich needed to test it's stupa bombers they were new the dive bombers and so they chose poor basque town called gernika to practice their bombing runs well it turns out that the tomahawks worked fairly well whoever manufactured them's probably gonna get new contracts for the shiny new missiles because they worked they worked really well so as the tomahawks flew out of a b one bombers god bless the pilots and they hit these alleged toxic chemical factories i wanna know why.
