"Pay t. m. you may have heard us talk about them before There's also resolute in the uk new bank and you b. a. n. k. In latin america alipay in china in the us the super hopefuls include chime of course pay pal among others. These kinds of apps are finding good. Early success brazil's new bank for instance is seeking a fifty billion dollar valuation in its forthcoming. Ipo which would make it more valuable than lloyds banking group or even bbva So d- you know this isn't defy This is this is fintech. But it's definitely the convergence of we want to be the app on your home screen that you go to most often and whether that started his messaging or started as payments There's there's a lot of people trying to become that. A lot of people are investing in that i mean i think new bank Berkshire hathaway did a major investment in that last round valued at amir thirty billion dollars always get in early. Those clever heavily folks. All right real quickly carlstrom either research fellow in computing at edinburgh napier university writing for the conversation and then republished where i saw it on the next web describes the need for robotic is to appear more humid specifically pupil. Dilation which you probably don't think about much but that is a signal of emotion and understanding that the pupils dilate and constrict fixed robot is have that glassy stare in part because there aren't moving struggling was inspired by meeting john copier one of the engineers who worked on jabba. The huts dilating is for star. Wars return of the jedi turns out that had very big is so is a lot easier to make that work in very big is. It's a little harder to make that work at human scale but stray there mayday. Silicon membrane coated with graphing to act as the muscle in a robot by the graphing could be thin enough to let light pass through and the membrane would then expand and contract. The pupil in response to a field of static electricity and microprocessor was used to control the reactions and responses. Both to light. Would you just need a sensor for an emotional cues so they had a machine learning algorithm trained to recognize facial expressions for happiness and sadness and then program the pupil to dilate appropriately. I feel like we've made not one but two steps. Closer to sky. Net and the terminator. Because we've got more realistic pupils. Which makes her more realistic is and social cooperation. So robots working together Collaborate them before they collaborate us all depends on cyber dyne systems. And when you think of the uncanny valley this is one thing. I here discussed as much as the dilation because we definitely respond to it. But we don't think about it you don't think about oh that guy's pupils really dialing right. It's just a subconscious response. But when it's you interpret the face as being weird somehow if on one hand yes i agree on the other hand if you have a let's say a family member or a co worker that may be has a substance abuse issues. You're definitely overtly reacting to the gigantic dilated operate. Properly up another fair point comes from james. C smith in our mailbag feedback daily news. Show dot com said the chip shortages affecting many things including cars everytime chips are mentioned in the context of cars on. Tom calls them out his display chips. Is it really the display chips. That are a problem for car manufacturers or is it the dozens of other chips in airbags antilock brakes engines and more and other automotive news sources. I don't see people focused on display chips. The way does every time you mentioned display chips which is very often it makes me wonder which chips are truly the problem We'll james you're right. It's all of them I use display chips as an example of the micro controllers that are a big problem for cars and the display jobs are are are one of the more frequent ones. They're one of the ones that sideline trucks For chevy and ford but they're all examples of microcontrollers. That are really old. You know we're not talking about ten nanometers here we're talking about fourteen or larger nanometer processes which means they're on fabrication processes that nobody wants to invest to build new ones for because chips are getting smaller But yes it's not just display chips use display chips because i think that's the easiest one For people to wrap their heads around. But i'll stop doing that All the time. I it's crazy right because One of the shortages at a friend of mine is dealing with is Usb controllers which you're on a forty four micron process or there's literally two or three dozen fabs they can do that around the world but there's just so demand right now but I think it was the detroit news one of the local papers that whole thing on the chip shortage and they talked about a typical automobile right now or truck having somewhere between five hundred and fifteen hundred chips inside of it which i thought was a little high but even it was just fifty or seventy five hundred. That's just a lot of silicon source right now. There's a and that's going to contribute to a james. James is absolutely right when he points that out though it is the older and kinda dumber micro controllers. That are often the problem. Because like you say there's fewer fabs you know people don't wanna keep tabs going for for stuff that old right and so you only have a few From what i read. Anyway you only have a few clients in auto manufacturers that need. These kinds of chips had often. It didn't also help the one of the largest providers of automotive specific like they're responsible for something like thirty percent of the world's automotive microprocessors had a some incidents at factory What i say. Incidents i believe i mean fire burning down this a lot bernie. We've lost aka. we've lost. There's been a lot of fires that that's so hard to to for people like. Why is there a chip shortage like well. There's the toilet paper thing that happened with everybody believing there wasn't going to be any need for chips and then suddenly everybody needed chips and so then everybody started stockpiling chips. Which made the problem worse than there's the weather That that messed with plants ability to get power in texas and some rain and other places and a lack of rain. Either the fires then. There's the shipping containers all piling up in one part of the world we needed in other parts of the world. So yeah it's a it's a whole bunch of different stuff turns out when you turn the world off a few months and then tried to turn it back on it shakes things up a little to turn it back onto the right order. Yeah it's not as good as it is for your computer to turn it off. Turn it on Real quickly at big. Thanks to our brand new boss greg. H you just started backing us on patriotic greg. "It's exploring ways to provide additional more tailored live. TV options as well. Yeah End Since playstation vue announced that it was going away at the end of January. I've been looking at back at Sling Hulu and Youtube TV and ATV maybe now as options and who seems to be the best option for me. Youtube has the best interface right now and even has a couple more channels that I want but I love that who is is tied into Hulu Right. I already are Mardian. Hulu watching shows that are carried on just the regular on-demand Hulu side and if I can integrate integrate into that to to watch my hockey and other live stuff. I think that's the way I'm GonNa go fifty five dollars a month. Well it's not as great as forty five dollars a month but it's actually cheaper than what. I was playing the playstation Vue and way cheaper than what I'd end up paying spectrum so I think this is this is decent doesn't surprise me that who is leading the way right now because of what I just said I agree. They also Hulu also happens to have the last three seasons of Archer where you yeah pretty much anywhere else you get X. or eighty what's my favorite content. I've been watching cheers on on Hulu which you can get on Netflix. And CBS. All access. But again. Because I'm already on Hulu watching good place and handmaid's tale and all this other stuff. I'm like well just watch it over here. So so they kind of they if they keep building on that. I think that's going to be. I think that's going to be successful for WHO. I hope that this price increase might bring in some more channels because that is my one complaint about who lives a couple channels. I'd like them to have a but as I always say. If you WANNA go and decide which of these over the top streaming services you might want to get to replace your cable the best place to go supposed dot TV you can just put in where you are what channels are important to you and it will lay it all out including cable providers if you compare apples to apples and see which one will actually save you money. More money for Disney. It is. Who's used definitely going to be a cash cow for Disney wikipedia CO founder? Jimmy Wales has been slowly launching an alternative to facebook. It's a news oriented social network that you can sign up to for free but you're put on a wait list so if you WANNA skip the line and not wait to be asked in you pay. It doesn't take ads. You're not paying to get rid of ads or anything like that. They just say we're never gonNA take ads But you can pay twelve ninety nine a month or one hundred dollars a year to help support report it. It's kind of like donation for Wicca Pedia and it lets you into the social network faster. WT Social has about seventy eight thousand users right now. It's it's gained about fifty thousand since November six. It's growing fairly fast but doesn't have a lot of people in it yet. It's topic oriented. Uses the community to enforce standards similar to how Kapadia works. In fact anyone can edit or delete content when you go in and ask you to to pick a bunch of topics you want to follow and then you can go in and see those and engage agent talk to people about them and if you pay to get in you can actually vote. You can actually invite other people to join for free as well. The concept yeah. This is interesting my first reaction was like anybody could delete my content. This is insane. It would be horrible because people are petty on social networks but if it's more news oriented and less personal news oriented then maybe that's an issue wikipedia sure you can go in and wreak awesome havoc. But for the most part it's pretty self sufficient the moderation community in there is really robust When things get weird they get fixed quickly and for the most part it is? It is like an encyclopedia type thing. You know well respected so if you have under one hundred thousand users Yes as you mentioned. This is not an alternative to facebook. There's I mean it's apples and oranges. There's just no way but and everybody's always trying to be like. This is the alternative facebook. Everybody complains about facebook. But you're all on it. I don't know I mean it's it's it's it's an interesting idea. I I duNno Robert. I saw you on facebook recently and that you hadn't been on facebook in a while so what what do you what do you make. WTO Social I. I have no interest in this per se. I would like to see though is something where I could literally install it on my Nass device and it could connect to other folks is set setup social media networks. But it's one hundred percent private where I can just invite the family or close friends to look at you know photos of the kids or the pets or whatever or or make plans for the weekend and granted. It's nice to have it in a fully open environment where anybody can get in there and take a look at least make that a little easier to do the connection. But this sounds Eric Rolling towards something. Bright personally would rather have far more control over it myself. It's unfair to call this facebook. This is about. The news is trying to take apart facebook and say if facebook news bothers you try this. This has got hacker news in it. The the hacker news feed feed comes in and you can get it every day comments about to people about it so the news feed part of facebook. The sharing of birthdays and pictures from parties is in all of that not on this is just one segment of facebook. The news segment and if it succeeds it'll be amongst people who are like. Yeah I just I just WANNA cleaner our way to follow what's going on. That has a little bit of a social aspect to it where I can discuss things with people in a respectful way. That super cool I look at things like read it for it. Used to be a lot more news or just a while. You'd see their first before anywhere else now is if you follow enough stuff. You're going to see a fire hose of variety of things. It would be nice to have just a strong focus on actual news and current events and things like that in a in a relative uh hopefully a relatively vetted environment it's like setting setting your browsers homepage to the wikipedia page and it gives you that this day in history section loved that kind of stuff very much say what you want about wikipedia. It's actually usually more accurate than most actual encyclopedias. And so they're taking what they've learned their and and applying it here. We'll see if it works if you want to get all the tech headlines each day in about five minutes be sure to subscribe to daily tech headlines Dot Com all all right. We had singles day. Just now we have black Friday coming up in the US and a kind of no matter where you are on the planet. "That's not terribly controversial. It's it's a matter of placement saying like hey if somebody's looking for this kind of APP or they're on this page of APP and you want to place your APP on there. That's fine so they haven't run into problems where they're crossing the line there but if you start to place ads on the Apple. TV interface face. That doesn't look very happily if you start to put ads in Safari Somehow It can wait into privacy problems really quick when you're dealing with browsing data so I'm not sure. What kind of assumptions J. P. Morgan Chase makes other than to say well? If apple made the decision to sell the ads this is how much which they could sell. It's different than them. Actually making the decision to sell the ADS. which is then going to become an investor fight if they don't do it because they could be perceived as leaving money on the table? Do you leave the ad settings at default on most of the devices you use I personally I generally will turn off the the saving of specific information nations who ended up getting very generic ads. What I'm looking at by? I'm still fed ads but the they mean less to me than they probably would. If I just left all these settings it's something that that. IRS users generally don't think about because the ad settings are virtually. You know the privacy settings are pretty tight already on IOS and those ads settings have to do with the individual applications more often. If they're going over the line that's something I've been absolutely thrilled about with android ten and it's it has gone through every APP on my phone and literally said. Hey you know what this thing's tracking your location twenty four seven. Would you like to turn that completely off or just when the APP is running or I well I was thirteen to it. In fact it's it's it's knocking down my door more often than I'd like. I'm like gosh buying. Yes dark. Sky Weather APP. It's fine Dan wherever I am does but but yes. It's better to be airing on the side of making sure that we're aware then alternative totally. I love this trend. Twitter made its ban on political ads. Official remember we said Jack. Dorsey tweeted about this but Devils in the details on this sort of stuff the rules are now out. They define line political content as content in an advertisement. You can say whatever you want you know the different rules for what you say on twitter. But in a paid advertisement any content the references a candidate candidate a political party elected or appointed government official an election a referendum ballot measure legislation regulation directive or judicial outcome is going to be considered a political ad. And you're not allowed to put political ads on twitter. It also bans advertisements that contain references to political content. So in other words the entire ad isn't about it but a refers to it including appeals for votes solicitations of financial support and advocacy for or against any the of the above listed types of political content so that just further defines. I hear you can't get around the rules by doing this. If you're talking about voting for something and it's clearly political we're going to ban it. Candidates parties governments or officials political action committees at certain political. Nonprofit groups are banned from any advertising thing all together even if they just WanNa sell their used bicycle. No they're not doing it on twitter. I'm not sold bicycles on twitter but an exemption will be given to news organizations to all of these rules if they have two hundred thousand monthly unique or more make their own content and focus on more than one issue. So they're trying to draw a line that says you know we're talking about the Washington Post here. We're not talking about you know Joe Blow Pack. That started a blog yesterday. An exemption will also be given to cause based content tent to this and this is where it's tricky to allow adds that educate raise awareness and or call for people to take action connection with civic engagement economic growth both environmental stewardship or social equity causes this last exemption does not allow targeting by Zip code or political preference and it can't reference or be run on behalf half of the entities banned from placing political ads like candidates and parties. But that line between saying hey. I'm just trying to promote the economy of my hometown and this is really pushing for a political candidate. Is I think we're twitter. is going to run into any potential controversy. Man I mean this is first of all. I would like to commend twitter. The company has obviously put a lot of thought into this. And perhaps that's why this was not rolled out sooner because there were awesome decision that had to be made that said this reads as like a terms of service. That like no one's GonNa read and they're not gonNA understand necessarily on the other side of it because it's very complicated and I'm not sure I mean I think it's a good thing but if you don't understand how things work than it. It sort of works against twitter. Twitter is full of a lot of users. Who would not care to understand what you just explained Tom? Yeah I mean what's going to happen if somebody's going to put an ad That they're going to claim is an ad that is caused based and who's going to be about climate change for a Democratic candidate or it's going to be about economic growth Republican candidate. There's GonNa be some other combination there. And it's going to be uncovered that it was placed based on behalf of pushing the agenda of someone and twitter is going to have a controversy. That's going to happen. There's just no way to get around this fuzzy line that they've drawn right but I wonder if that isn't the point where twitter is said. Yeah but we push the boundary out over there so you if if they say the candidates name that they say the party's name if they talk about voting it's is clearly going to get kicked so they have to be so circumspect that it might not be terribly beneficial for their candidate even if they are trying to get around the rules this stuff bother. You're a little bit. John McAfee who might not be the most stable genius in the world. He had a twitter. Es tweet about a week ago where he said you shouldn't be allowed to use the word news in the title of Your Organization if at least eighty percent of that content and is that it or at least Verified to be relatively truthful. And you do that for the majority of your broadcast day. And he wasn't It was just an interesting idea where maybe it is time. We take a look at who can call themselves a new news organization and have at least something there to help because the problem all goes back to. It's just so easy to manipulate what you see and what you do and and to get a point out there that you know for devious reasons. Even anybody has access to these networks and I hate to see it turning into an arms race of who can manipulate them. The best and it's it's I it's spooky but at the same point you know it's easy enough for me to disconnect and walk away from it all but then I feel like I'm disengaging from discussions in this society so it's a balanced paces without a doubt listening listening to this. This morning's doings in Congress corruptions is everywhere and and we can point the finger all we want but hell half of our elected. Most of our elected officials are taking legal bribes from from the so-called big pocketed constituents. And it's it's in my opinion kind of tragic that functions that way in this country it's not a whole separate separate. That's a whole separate talking but there you go well you know who isn't corrupt not necessarily anyway is the modern incurred cutter Mafia Nathanson estimates. That Hulu has two point seven million subscribers words live. TV service putting it at number one just ahead.
