Should The Simpsons Cast Be Replaced With AI Voice "Actors"?

"With most of the actors who voiced characters on the simpsons well into retirement age and the show seemingly having no intention of ever stopping a meeting. Cut wallover at wired. Uk wondered. could the actors all be replaced with a i rep locations. It makes a bit of sense off the bat. Near the proliferation of deepfakes circulating online aside major movie franchises have increasingly been patching together old footage of actors who have passed away like carrie fisher and the rise of skywalker and paul walker and furious. Seven or even just to fabricate a younger version of an actor who coincidentally had an entire body of work from their teenage years to use as reference points like robert. Downey junior in captain. America's civil war and will smith in jimmy man and with the simpsons. You only have to create the voice shortly. that's far easier especially with over three decades of content to pull from wired turn to tim. Mixed smithers canada-based. Ai researcher and media producer. Who builds a speech model that can be trained to mimic anyone's voice and notably has already recreated homer simpson for a few youtube videos including one where homer stands in for julia roberts in notting hill. Here's how he does it. Quoting wired mic smithers built generic. Ai model that can turn any text into audio speech in english when he wants to make a new voice he tunes the model further with two or three hours of new data of that particular person. Speaking along with a text transcript it focuses in on what makes a homer voice a homer voice and the different frequencies. He says after that it's a matter of asking the model to generate multiple takes. Each one will vary slightly and choosing the best one for your purposes and quotes bonnets. The performance is pretty flat as wired. Says it's quote as if he's reading out something that he doesn't really understand the meaning of and quotes which is pretty apt for homer still in the hut the performance. The show would probably be looking for there are other startups around. The world. Likes an antic in the uk and replica studios in australia. That are working to add. Some of that emotional resonance to a voice is using actual actors to help train them performing different lines over and over again with different emotional tones. Technically if you had someone recite all the existing phonemes in the english language or redescendu since that contained them all you should be able to then piece together any possible words. He wants but in reality. People's accents emotions can change things just slightly enough to make the process exceptionally challenging. Although absolutely doable and the time it takes to train the ai decreases over time with more data. Both semantic and replica studios who work primarily with video games where. There's a lot of intriguing possibilities with things like getting a character to say the player's name or whatever. The player wants them to or having a i basically work as a stand in until a real actor comes on board both of those companies say the actors they work with get paid anytime their voices are used in a game and this is a key element for me. Not just what rights doesn't actor have if they're only ever used to train in ai and not perform roll themselves so to speak but taking this back to the simpsons what rights do actors have whose voices are recreated to be their characters the screen actors guild affords actors certain bargaining rights over the use of their likeness. Which does explicitly extend to a performer's voice and while his protection is being rapidly expanded and reexamined as technology evolves you can impart think crispin glover for its origins after crispin glover declined to revive his role as george mic. Fly in back to the future. Part two they technically recast him. But they saddled the new actor. Geoffrey wiseman with prosthetics and employed classic stage tricks like having him upside down or wearing sunglasses to obscure his features as well as the use of some footage of glover himself from the first movie. Unless you were well aware that glover hadn't returned for the sequel. You probably wouldn't have had any idea that the george mcphee racine was any different from the first movie so glover sued the producers for using his likeness without his permission and for not paying him for the use of the footage. He shot for the first movie. But the legality of all of this now banned far beyond simply using a performance likeness and in many cases. Who is allowed to do what isn't so clear. There's copyright law which could give authority to the studio or whoever owns the rights but that counteracts with the right to publicity basically crispin glover thing and that's especially tenuous with cast as well known as the ones from the simpsons. You know a lot of people know these actors and if in a i replicated homer were out there. Advertising for some product people might assume dan castellaneta who voices homer is endorsing the product even if he had nothing to do with it so it's a tricky path to tread and personally. I'm a bit wary about the idea of ai. Replacing actors were any type of artists. Mean that's not to say that i don't want. Ai involved in arts. I think various tech can produce really rad art. I just don't think it can replace human-made arts and especially with something like the simpsons you know on the one hand. It's been on so long that it's the perfect fodder for ai. Replicated voices because then it could live on beyond the actors. And i guess honor them in some way but on the other hand. It's been so long that there are countless voice actors out there who can nail the characters voices perfectly and probably with more emotion.

Human Speech Evolution Gets Lip Smacking Evidence

"Imagine it jetting to a chimp in chimpanzee whether portray by REX. Harrison Eddie Murphy or Robert Downey Junior Dr. doolittle learn to talk to animals, but in reality signs has remains some distance from solving the long standing question of how we humans learn to talk during our evaluation, his one new clue, a team for searches in Great Britain have demonstrated how the rapid succession of opening and closing mouth rhythms by chimpanzees. Lip smacking mimics the natural pace, acumen mouths talking. The. Findings are in the journal Biology Letters. This phenomenon has been observed before in other ape species who performed lip smacking movements at around five hurts, which falls within a range of mouth, opens, and closes characteristic of all spoken languages namely between two and seven huts, but this lip smacking timing connection had not been made in our closest. Relatives until now mouth and vocal signals with speech like rhythm, Hetero been observed in some monkeys in gibbons and Orangutans, one of our closest great relatives, so the last years had seen accumulating evidence that these rhythm other than something that only talking humans do. This was the rhythm from deeper within our prime ancestry recycled so to speak as a cornerstone for speech pollution. The Mirror of University of Warwick. Who led the study, but the sense of evolutionary continue towards speech steelhead, a big gap to cross the African Apes. There was no evidence for speech like rhythm, neither in Gorillas Bonobos nor chimpanzees, the study followed two captive populations of chimpanzees one in the UK. I'm wanting Germany as well is to wild populations in Uganda. Researchers observed lip smacking at an average of four point one five hurts the made all the observations whenever a chimpanzee was grooming another think of a hairdresser engaging an idle chatter with a customer at the Beauty Salon, the coffee mation of speech like rhythm of the mouth into Pansies, not revealed per se how language came about in our own lineage, but he offers the final confirmation to scientists that we are looking at the right place that. That, we are on the right track to solve this mystery. In that great apes in captivity in the wild steel have to reveal all their secrets about human nature in human origins, Numero also notes the variation in Lips. Mac Times both between and within the chimp groups do not appear to be hardwired rather the lip smacking variability likely reflected how individual differences and environmental factors and even social conventions affect how chimpanzees communicate with each other. "Off as a joke and it broken entertainment weekly. The Aerial Jackson was like I'll make that movie like yeah. Why not sure. He's doing some other things that they're Samuel Jackson. Trying to keep the off of this keying Thompson. Punching a snake is my favorite part. I liked that Keenan tops claims that he can fly a plane and all. He's ever done on Sony playstation any of the Games on there. That's how he flies really he can land the plane. What were they playing Top Gun on the playstation forgot about in real life all right. Let's see what you have to say on facebook. Mostly just rattle off the movies. You liked wait. That wasn't what we were supposed to go back to school like seven times and I did the script then. I ranked every ironman movie. Well iron man three. The adventures ones are in there too. So you know. This isn't a bunch Some spider-man's somehow incredible hulk still ranked higher than iron man to Lawrence. I couldn't think of a better actor to play Tony Stark Slash ironman his wit and sarcasm or what made me enjoy his character and persona the bond established with Tom Holland. The such a great match onscreen also the Sherlock Holmes trilogy him and Jude. Law had great chemistry. There three movies not yet. The third one is in production. Right now apparently. Lauren is in production with them. 'cause she's already seen it time. Travel time traveler. Why did she come back to twenty twenty then terminator? This Lauren? We worked with Dow Makes Sense. Well no why did you say oh? She was perfectly fine. Except for the time traveller. Maybe I was just disappointed if she was time traveler. Why she wouldn't let me know and take me whether I would like to leave twenty twenty. It's not bigger in their. Apparently one person Susan said love everything about our. Dj Are deejays my boyfriend. I love all the marvel movies especially not sure that out yet. Let me know Susan. The restraining order is coming in Key said great weird science. Chris says amazing actor and what a comeback Jennifer just says Weird Science Phil Says Kiss Kiss Bang Bang really did just leave me tell you the last movie titles Amazingly Tropic. Thunder is not listed once. And I'd be like that's what we refer me throughout the most in the script. Yeah and iron man Tampa because it's not politically correct guy. Yeah I know that's why it's not. They actually did an interview with Robert. Downey junior not too long ago and he said he doesn't regret doing the black face because it fits the role. Perfect it's perfect. It's a parody of himself and he actually said that the biggest influence on that role was himself and how some actress take things so seriously realized he was really parodying himself while making the movie and chaplain all over again. Yeah Yeah I mean that's the whole point of the black faces not like they just did black face duplex. No there's it's there's a greater purpose exactly and they address. How faces bad in the movie to pay attention to it? It's I feel like it's now getting hate that? Blazing Saddles does from people. Who just don't understand while they're blind saddles tropic. Thunder is a great movie. It's one of my favorites of Ben. Stiller movies is also one of my favorite things. Is Laura trying to organize the script or the show we all? Just throw it on the floor. Like it's organized. Tama says Chen Timothy. Says I Love Them? I'm fan especially loved him in Zodiac Oud. Yeah that was a good one. Terry love him and how he put his life back together and stayed sober on that note lessons. Zero is my favorite. It's been forever since I've seen less than zero. I don't think I've ever seen downing is a bj to somebody for drugs. Lizzy says considering all the drugs. He's done he has aged. Well he really has. Yeah not like Paul Rudd. Nobody ages like Paul Paul because he doesn't h no install read and Patrick Stewart are highlanders. I feel Maggie. Smith is right up there too old looking. I don't know if you can count Petra student that because that man has looked the same for thirty some years I know but when like when you think of Patrick Stewart and you think of I mean he's had occurred before that but his big induction into the like famous card this card and he's already old when he played the card play Professor Z. Y. Why and Z played. All of them and he was old their character. I know it's so tough to play. Professor actually. Just sit around in a chair and say that you can read people's minds. I think my favorite thing that I saw was like somebody was like it'd be so powerful with his mind. Why can't he make his legs work? I did see that though my favorite thing going back to Paul ride I saw earlier of the avengers age. Everybody looks old and show Steve Rogers at the end of end game. We like all the other avengers. Look at Old. And then there's power just like looking like himself you know it's GonNa Happen to Paul. Rudd is he's GonNa look at young forever and then one day he's going to eight Hundred Years in one day. So what you're telling me is it's the picture of Dorian Gray right now yes okay at finally. Mary says love him in everything from back to school to now is sherlock. Holmes is awesome. Go into twitter Oliver. Ya Says Gen Z. Teenagers discovering that Robert Downey junior did black face and tropic thunder and J. J. J. J. O. J. J. L. J. J. to John's US law to law. I don't know once played a character. That was the definition of extreme intentionally offensive. Humor are like the last kids in class. Learn that Santa Claus isn't real. He's not real what I guess. They're saying that the GEN Z. Late on the boat for discover their over downey junior did black face. What do you mean you? People really need to see the movie before you get upset that he did black face. I'm sure there's a lot of people never even seen food playing the dude playing another dude. Yeah exactly he's playing. He's American actor plan on Australia actor. Who's play around? Controversial treatment to die scares. Yeah I mean. The writing of that is just brilliant. Alone Day sparkle says. Hear me out. Tom Holland as Ellie in the last of us. Hbo Show is a big. Yes for me and Robert Downey junior as Joel would be a serve so I guess he's excited. I don't I never played the last of US video game but he wants those two characters to be in an HBO show producers Wifi says. I just found out Robert Downey. Junior is a cottage. Core is a cottage core AF and lives in a windmill cottage court af as an lives in a windmill. I don't think that's true. I don't think he does live in a one L. But though him Tom Holland's interactions are really good together. They did send a picture of Robert Downey junior standing in front of a windmill. So you know that's not photoshopped. Post a picture of the beer of the show that we do and everything that this time. I think we're just GONNA post a picture of Robert. Downey junior in front of a win That's a great idea. All right let's go to the phones brew. I enjoy late Robert Downey junior played. Dumpy makes me cry. The only other time I cry is when I accidentally listened to your show. But that's a different sadness can't be any worse than when he went on that tour of the office with us. Yeah he was miserable in real life to know at least it's consistent yeah so apparently As at least two thousand eighteen Robert Downey junior and his wife really do live in a late nineteenth century windmill folly originally built as a playhouse and later transformed into a full-fledged residence it resides in East Hampton goal. I take that back but do so WIFI still going to be the picture for this episode picture at actually already done the promos stuff. But I'll redo it because that's a great picture. You know all right. Well let's revisit the beer cooler. No NO WAY. Yellow Glider Way Way Way. Cool.

It was and we've been friends of a sense thanks Hilton. I'll see you later for the movie chairs. I feel like Elton John. Junior is following us. He seems pop up when we least suspect him. He must just have good taste and podcasts. Are we doing a show on Elton or on me you iron man? Ben? Let's get back to it then. Shall we Mel Gibson called me up and I said I owed him one because a hamlet. I agreed and he got me a role in the singing detective. I I love musicals that led to a role opposite Halle Berry in Gotha. Sabrina junior hates scary movies. So much true. How did you know I don't know I just feel like we've been down the spit before the movie wasn't as scary as it was bad? It's OK though because that got me a leading role in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Shame blacks first film. Yeah he was definitely a little wet behind the ears but was one of the most fun experience I ever had making a movie up until then was it like a sign of things to come. Yes I got to play Lois. His brother on family guy. He was the fat Guy Strangler. Great Time doing an animated show. They have some good jokes on their share. Like the chicken fight. Laura doesn't like it when Peter and the chicken fight. She says it goes on too long and takes away from the joke to agree with her on that one. I think if you have a joke that shows up multiple episodes. It needs to be done right. Ooh I like it when it's done right. That's what she said. Well it's the moment you've been waiting for in the story and I think you people are ready to hear it Eilly. Wait. What do you mean you people? I mean you? Podcasters are ready to hear about my favorite movie that I've ever done tropic. Thunder was one of the most fun movies that I've ever had the privilege to be a part of weight. You mean to tell me that you had more fun doing black face than starting. What has become the Marvel? Cinematic Universe No. It wasn't more fun to do that. But it was necessary for the role it was a parody of how some actors go to extremes to play a part now. It's considered to be very controversial role in fact. A whole movie was hit by controversy from Ben Stiller's portrayal of a handicapped person to you. Put on black face critic still love it. I love it. Wait Ben Stiller was being handicapped. I thought he was Zealander in that movie. Oh crap lenders sequel no or Prequel window to come out. I thought didn't go out and watch movies. I watched them both. I thought he was lander. Ben Stiller has one role me too. I was afraid that could happen. But in the end the role got me an academy award nomination for best supporting actor. It's definitely a role that would get me in more trouble today. But one about iron man. That movie came out the same year as tropic thunder and it might be the role you are most known for I know. Please just hug about Ironman. So he'll quit asking and begging you. But I wanted to know more about the tropical thunder beer the tropic thunder beer traffic of thunder beer is what the beer is. The name of the beer even in the movie was Tropic Thunder. We are drinking traffic offender Logger Sabrina. It's not part of the show. Ya that's that's more towards the end fine. Let's hear about Iron Junior. I am iron man. It was supposed to be a role that I would give more presence to because of who I wasn't an actor and would help get more public interest in the movie. So you were going to make it more marketable to ca comic book movie exactly. I thought you the perfect choice to play Tony Stark. After everything you went through and your life leading up to that point definitely related more to Tony Stark than most would given my addition issues. I thought it was good role and signed on for more movies right away. I wish they would have put the demon in a bottle storyline in one of the movies. It seemed like they were hinting at in the first one a little in the second one I agree. That's one of the few memorable things of the second movie. Besides introduction of black widow I wanted to touch on it but as we saw more kids. We're going to see the movies. We dropped that part of the story. And that makes sense. You don't want the centerpiece of what you're trying to build be launched by drunk elementary. My dear Chris get that reference Sherlock Holmes Junior. It is Sabrina Junior. It was the first took after making the first ironman movie. As maybe he's Jude. Law was good Watson. Yes he is always acting like he has a stick up his ass all high strung because he doesn't know what homes will do next. We made those movies with the third one still in development. I'm looking forward to playing sherlock more time. Those are two of my favorite movies. You've ever made just been so. Informative would ask next. Do we have any questions left. Haven't we learned everything from what I've told you so far? Only one way to find out now please Chris. Dundee this do what I'm GonNa make. Don't worry I got this covered. He performs with different characters on stage in film. That's what makes him an actor precisely. Thank you for answering that. The sleepy one seems to be the most attentive well. That doesn't sound very interesting when you say it like that. How was she supposed to say it? I was just hoping to get rid of the training wheels on my bike. Sabrina junior the training wheels came off quick for me. I started to enjoy my dad and a weird father. Son Bonding moment. It was a connection of love and abuse it later semi spiraling down in ways that I would never be prepared for. Drugs are bad Mr Hat. My father regretted later on but the damage was already done. Got You started using drugs. When did you decide to become an actor? It's the Family Business Laura. I'm sure he was born into it like being a door to door. Ice Cream scoops salesman. Yes in a way. My Dad gave me the scoop with the hole in the middle of it. That's deep. I actually my first movie when I was five. I played a puppy. I know it wasn't until I dropped out of high school that I started to consider acting as a real career choice so you moved to California to get. That film career started. No I was going to school in California at the time. At least you didn't have have far to go. You only had to go up. The road to start. Making movies are moved to New York City after dropping out in. Hope to make it there. Make sense to me if you can't make it there you can't make it any.

I'm excited I'm excited to have you on and if so much to cover and I thought I would begin with a question that will hopefully open up a whole different doors. A whole different set of doors. I think is the proper English expression that could potentially walk through. And it's related to a book. This is affective computing crime if. I'm getting any of the pronunciation wrong by. Rosalind Picard A. R. D. How did this book come into your life so I am concerned? I grew up in Cairo and around the Middle East. But at the time this is like nine thousand nine hundred ninety eight. I had just graduated from computer science from the American University in Cairo and my career plan at the time was to become faculty like wanted to teach and so. I knew teach had to do my master's in it was all very calculated and so I was looking for a thesis topic and my fiance at the time went on Amazon and he said Oh. You know there's this really interesting book by this. Mit professor called. Rosalind Picard Called Affect of computing and. We ordered it through Amazon. It took about three months to shift to Cairo. It got held and customs for reasons. I don't really understand but eventually I got hold of the book and I read it and I you know. I think it's safe to say that it changed my life because so so the thesis in the book is that computers need to understand human emotions just the way people do and I read the book and I was fascinated by this idea and it you know I made that my research topic and it became my obsession and it just really changed the trajectory of my life. What besides the thesis in the book had such an impact on your was it just that that world view that perspective or was there more to the book or more to the author. Yeah a great question. Soon let's talk about the author. I so rise is one of the few and I mean this was true back then. It's still true today. She's one of the few kind of female you know. Computer Science Machine Learning engineers professors in the space. And you know I kind of learned about her over the years I've eventually actually. She ended up being my co-founder many years later. But there's a story around that but but essentially I was just fascinated by her and she you know she's a mom she's three boys. I just thought she was like a Rockstar. So that was kind of one part of it but just the way she wrote the book and how she you know. I'm very expressive as a human being and I just really like. I think emotions really matter and are in the way we communicate. Non Verbally is very important and it struck me that when we think of technology that piece of how we communicate is completely missing and I was like. Oh yeah like it seems so obvious so I just got fascinated by the thesis. I got fascinated by the implications. Like what happens when technology becomes kind of clued into how we that's going to open up a whole new world of possibilities and I was intrigued by that. So let's travel back to that point in time you were with your then fiance and this book is ordered at the time. You're planning on becoming a teacher professor. Why were you on that track? To begin with I mean was it. Take us back to Egypt at that time were there. Many women striving to be faculty members in similar departments. I'm assuming computer science or or perhaps it was a different department. Maybe could tell us more. Yes so I went to the American University in Cairo and I study computer. Sciences an Undergrad. At the time most of the faculty were were guys except for one female faculty Dr Hulda Husni which became my role model and my mentor. And I just wanted to be like like she was awesome. She was you know. Very smart. Very approachable very fashionable. And I was like Ooh I like that and and I just wanted to be like her and so devised a plan also geek. I'm a geek and I'm proud of it so I I kind of devised a plan. I was like okay. I'll graduate top of my class which I did and then I was like okay. I'll go get a masters and PhD abroad. Because that's what you do and then come back and I'll join joined the faculty and so at the time because I was getting married to my fiance and he had a company based in Cairo coming to the. Us was not an option because it was way too far so he was like a let you go study in the UK. Because it's close enough so I applied to Cambridge and got in. That was kind of the impetus for going abroad and doing this. Like focusing on this research. So when did you then end up going to the? Us was that a difficult conversation with your family or your then-fiancee walk us through how that happened because it doesn't sound like that would have been just a hop skip and a jump to second conversation so walk us through that experience. Yes okay so then. I moved to Cambridge Right Cambridge University in the UK not not Cambridge Massachusetts and I will Cambridge Cambridge original Cambridge And we got married so basically I got married and got the scholarship to go study at Cambridge and my house. So He's now my husband right. Well he's my ex now but at the time he was my husband he was very supportive. He was like you gotta go. This is your dream. I'll support you will have a long distance relationship now. My family. My parents and his parents were horrified. They were like what you can't do that so so I do like to give him credit for for for making this happen and being supportive so I ended up in Cambridge and he was in Cairo and we did that for five years and towards the end of my PhD Ros Picard was visiting Cambridge UK. To give a talk there. And I ended up meeting her in person and we totally hit it off and she said why. Don't you come work with me at MIT as a post doc and I was like Oh my God. This is like a dream come true. I've been following you like forever and this is why you know like I told her my story. And then I caveat it I said that just you know I've I've been married for the last five years and have had a long distance relationship so I have to go back to Cairo otherwise and I actually really said that. I said otherwise in Islam because I'm Muslim my husband can marry up to four women and if I don't show up eventually he'll just like Mary more women so I said half jokingly right so she was like that's fine just like commute from Cairo and I commuted from Cairo Boston for a good a good three or four hundred years going back and forth between MIT and Cairo. How often did you go back and forth. Or how often did he go back to Cairo? Maybe is a better. What else get so. Initially I would spend a couple of months in Cairo and then go spend like a few weeks and Boston and then I would move with my kids to Boston over the summer so summer break we just all go there and so initially. That was okay. So this was between two thousand and six to two thousand and nine was okay Things began to kind of really follow parts when I decided to start the company so we started to get a lot of interest in technology and displaying. It they really encourage you to spin outright. So in two thousand nine united started affect. Eva and I was literally spending two weeks in Cairo in Boston. Two weeks or two weeks in Boston. It was insane and that was when like just goes out of balance everything was out of bounds unless tough it was tough and and and you know. I'm divorced now. Imagine how that didn't go very well. It was just it was I think. In retrospect it was not a very healthy lifestyle. And I I. I wouldn't want to be in that place again. I wouldn't want others to be in that. I talked publicly about that time yet. Let's let's hop around chronologically a little bit. We're GONNA come back of course to starting the company and that decision but for people who don't have any real firsthand exposure to the Middle East much less. Egypt for instance What was it like growing up in in Egypt and based on at least some of my reading you for instance wore a hit job for quite some time. We're not talking short period of time. Maybe you could also speak to that. Yeah yeah and it sounds like you've spent some time in the you've you've you've been to Jordan. It's time in Jordan of spent some time in a few places in the Middle East but not in Egypt never met each and when I was we chatted a little bit before start recording only have a few words here and there in Arabic but it's Levin Arabic right. It's it's what what you'd run across in Jordan or or the Lebanon and I remember though having many people recommend that I not study the sort of standard Arabic textbook Arabic but that I study Egyptian Arabic because all of the as they put all the entertainment and movies that I might WanNa consume would-be an Egyptian Arabic. Needless to say I didn't get that far but I haven't spent any time in Egypt. Well your Arabic spreading goods and you're right about Egyptian accent. That's kind of the most common but but I think the key thing is like there's no one Middle East. There's no one form. I grew up in a family. That's kind of an interesting way quite conservative but also quite liberal so my parents were very pro education. They scientist the They put all their money towards our schooling and they made a point during the summers that we travel abroad and experienced kind other cultures. And I think that's why like I was so comfortable moving from one country to another and ending up in the United States. Your parents do certain interject. But what is your parents do professionally okay. So my parents met. So my dad taught computer programming in the seventies and my mom was probably the first female programmer in the Middle East. He attended his class and he hit on her and they ended up getting married so so I guess I should give them a little bit of credit for ending up. Being a computer signed sub. Sure they had something to do with that. That's so so they both. My mom was a computer programmer at the Bank of National Bank of Kuwait. So we were in Kuwait for a while and my dad is. He's always worked in technology and culturally. What was it like where you grew up Or or within the family. You said that they were for instance on one hand very lesser with the right a cosmopolitan. Perhaps in their perspective and Dr Related to education and and what what were the other ingredients in the household there was there's definitely like clear gender role so even though my mom worked her entire life. it was always. She was not allowed to ever talk about her job post. You know she would leave work at three. Pm Be home like whatever for pm when we got back from school and that was it. She was never allowed to take a conference call at home. The evening never allowed to travel for work and I didn't realize that until I was an adult like I just assumed this was the way it was but it did hamper her career progression and it was this implicit understanding. That's does your. Oh this is my role and we all stick in our lane so that was interesting We were for example. I have two younger sisters.

Where are all the Asian Beardsmen?

"In November of twenty seventeen filmmaker Justin. Chang decided agrout his facial hair for the first time I had never tried to grow out my facial hair before because I was just scared to do so like I wasn't sure how it's GonNa turn out you know. My Dad actually has a pretty boss mustache. And he's known as the Asian Guy with the mustache but I didn't know if I had heard of those genes just in his Chinese American and he says people always treated his dad's moustache like an exception to the norm. A lot of Asian. People were impressed that he could grow it out. On a lot of non Asian people read more impressed and sort of I think I signed him like these masculine values. That a lot of Asian American men MM stereotypically are not granted I think part of that too is because he grew up in Tennessee and Texas and in the sal you know facial hair was even more of a signal. Oh masculinity down there and it helped him get by email. Think that something like phase. Here's that big of a deal but like everything communicates. Justin didn't go up in the south like his dad ad. But he's from San Bernardino California where they're also wasn't a very big Asian community just an always has some scruff but he had never let his facial hair grow now in his late twenties he was about to travel across the country to film a documentary. I found my own production company called J school and we focus on telling stories of underrepresented represented people in other words people caller women and the Lgbtq community and movember provided him with an excuse movember also known as no shave. November is an annual event where men are encouraged to grow mustaches for the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues. The Movember Foundation a global men's health a charity which began in two thousand three has always focused on educating man about prostate cancer. Anticipation cancer but in twenty seventeen they expanded their mission to include spreading awareness about mental health issues and suicide prevention in issue that was really meaningful to Justin quick onto warning. There's a short mention of suicide coming. Yeah I had a friend when I was younger. Who took her life and it really is what I attributed sparking my career path onto a creative journey and it was my only outlet when I I was younger to write in sort of tell stories as a coping mechanism from when my friend died so when I saw that Movember had expanded its causes to also covering suicide aside if I like the perfect kind of aligning of the stars that I want to try going on? Facial hair was 'cause I believed in and since he was on the road working on his film there there was no one around the laugh at me if it look bad so he started growing at his facial. Hair Okay Caroline. I think this is a good time to admit that we don't have much personal experience. Dance with facial hair right ADA and we're also not Asian American men but we've decided to explore this topic Asian American men and facial hair. Because we've heard it's a thing he's like kind of a thing right now. It's definitely think there was even this article called. Why Asians Dread Movember about difficulties? Some Asian men have growing facial higher. I laughed because I get it. I understand because I know that. Some dudes can't you know what I mean just like hey some dudes like me aren't six feet tall. You know what I mean. It's like you're dealt a hand play it. I do think that there is something very specific about men feeling like they can do anything that that they see other men being able to do. I know some Very Very Astute East Asia gentlemen and if I'm really breaking down what I feel too was them. It's probably jealousy and breaking you know whether jealousy comes from this idea that they can fit into Western perceptions of masculinity better than I can also. It's important to question when you hear the phrase. He's Asian men and facial hair. Do you think of East Asian men Southeast Asian men South Asian men. These communities can have very different issues regarding facial the hair I grew up in a six. I don't have a choice. Beer's become such a hip thing so for me. It's very interesting to observe because I keep a beard for very different reasons. Both to my parents were really worried about me going airports because I mean I'm a brown dude with a beard people get uncomfortable. I can see it in old y people's faces when I am boarding a plane so this is our investigation. What's the vocabulary we don't know what does that have? A Moustache flavor saver. Chinstrap is just like when it goes your sideburns. Connect your cheekbones connect your Chin and how do other people feel about their facial hair. This is something that loves those bugging let me about to because she was so good looking back in the day but first. Let's go back to Justin so he's on the road traveling across the country doing interviews for a documentary series called ritual which is about NFL players and their pre-game superstition and he's also a few weeks into his facial. Missile Hair journey by week three like I had a pretty good moustache. I was pretty sure wasn't able to grow a full beard. I was manicuring it the best I could. He's googling photos those of Johnny Depp. Michael B Jordan and Robert Downey junior to get inspiration on how to style his facial hair into a goatee one day. He was in Denver Filming. Maria's Thomas a a superstar wide receiver for the Denver Broncos who also happen to be doing movember for the first time and he actually flies out a barber from la every every couple of weeks to do his hair and he was doing well for the first time too and his barber was giving him shit basically for being like him. Ed Others Asian duties grown up way better than you can. You can't beat the Asian Guy. So how did that make Justin fail. I dig any offense to it even though like it clearly had racial overtones overtones because I get what he was saying like. They didn't expect me to have such a full mustache. Goatee and this Guy Thomas. WHO's like obviously way tougher for the Niamh as an NFL player? He could barely grow the peach fuzz. It was just kind of a very self aware moment where you're like. Damn I can't handle a tackle or run. The forty yard dash or catch a touchdown in the end zone or win the super bowl ring like he can but for damn sure I cannot gross facial hair this might sound like a nice happy ending of Justin's the number story but it's just the beginning he soon finds out that not everyone has positive reactions to his facial hair one of my friends who will remain nameless she goes. How's your new former birth control but we'll come back to them later so we've learned not the ability or inability to go facial hair can be a source of insecurity or pride for certain men men but for most it's still purely aesthetic choice just like I put my hair in a ponytail or choose whether to wear makeup a certain way for a lot of men facial hairs away the former identity through their appearance? But what if your facial hair could actually affect your job prospects. We're going to take you to Hollywood where your appearance. Especially as an Asian man competing for a limited amount of rules can either get you a coveted role or lead to rejection desmond. Jim I'm an actor on generic barnacles implant season villain in season two saga shake hosts. A podcast called the Bollywood boys and I have facial head. Desmond is an Australian actor Who's been in shows like reef break now chocolates and missionary chronicles and most recently got cast in Marvel's Falcon and the winter soldier? Saga was in a web series called unfair ugly about a Muslim American family in Orange County. He is the Co host of the PODCAST. Bollywood boys and on the cast of the sketch comedy. Show that get Brown. We got them in a room together to talk about their facial hair. Visual here right now is recently shaven. It's an attempt at the Tony Stock Goatee and I haven't pulled it off in addition to Desmond's goatee. He also has long black hair. That goes just past his shoulders that he sometimes wears in half ponytail. Saga wears his hair shorter but he has a full beard like like the beard. Easiest of beards that anyone could possibly have. My beard hair is like as thick as wire. It feels like wires. You're coming out of my face from every possible poor. It's pretty intense. It's a lot of maintenance earns when saga says his beard was high maintenance. He wasn't joking so a lot of work. You you know like I got a shampoo rush it so the shampoo can get like in their condition. It I brush it against the conditioner. Rinse that out and I tell dry air dry for like five minutes. I blow dry. I gave some beard oil and brush that in and I gave moustache wax soccer. Who is Pakistani American? started his acting career without facial hair. In the beginning he wasn't booking anything his agents eventually dropped him. He says he started growing his beard out of laziness. I remember the first year that I grew out my beard. Maybe maybe four or five conversations that I had daily whereabout my beard. The first thing anybody would say to me would be dude sick beard bro. Dude how did we get itself full on my God. That's such a nice beard things like that easier or fuck. It feels like okay. It's catching atun on. People are watching me. I'm doing something right. At least I can grow a beard to get some people's attention because like in this industry you can be Super Knbr talented by the look and you're not going to be seen and so definitely helped get me into a lot of doors in two dozen fourteen. He started art decorating his beard and putting the photos on instagram. We're in Venice and we're sitting like this grassy area and there was like these little white flowers I I was like hold on analogy. Hey grab fifteen of ood beard and then I posted a photo on instagram and got like a couple of hundred likes and this is when like getting a couple of hundred likes. It was like Oh shit. This guy got a couple of hundred likes. He also decorated his beard for Christmas using miniature ornaments and for Easter. He put peeps committee eggs in his beard with toothpicks. By November of two thousand fifteen he had collected a series of these beard photos and a reporter from buzzfeed interviewed for story. The article coincidentally came out the day. Okay before his ten year high school reunion which he thought about skipping. I was really hesitant because people have done things and like they're working regular jobs they are married and have kids and like what do I have. You know I was what twenty eight I feel like. I haven't accomplished anything at this time. Caroline did you go to your high school reunion being in no did you. Yeah I I still have really good friends from high school so I thought it was Super Fun but I totally get it. If you don't don't WanNa go but it sounded like he wanted to go. He just needed a confidence booster and that oddly enough came from his

It makes it easier so if you're intimidated by going to interact with get. I'm sure people are like I'm not gonNA knock anyone for it At least that's that's your. You always have something like You don't necessarily meet with an attorney but if you're dynamic is crazy you may they want to be. I would soon be super detailed in your well if your family dynamic and just you know your conditions are very like detail detail. I guess Yeah it's it's just preparing like in in this article. They're saying how someone's been like essentially planning their the deaths since two thirteen and not like saying that they're gonNA die soon but like saying like just to have everything like in order. Well Yeah I mean. There's people like our age who choose their caskets and stuff. I've seen it in a vise or even on Fox on Youtube where like this. This guy goes through and Go through different. No I think it was on the show With visas he goes to different ways that you can like. Yeah Aww I was going to bring that up. Yeah and that was interesting because they go through a lot of options even one where it's like. It costs a lot of money. A lot of us don't have but you can freeze yourself so NBC coordinator whatever hopefully in a leader. Yeah time then. There's one where you could be a tree. Yeah like like you you can go back into the Earth Blake because you know some people don't want to Just raw or be in a box or anything like that. Like there's it's very interesting but yeah those are those things you know. It's just like you and I would have to set up like if we want a dnr stuff like that like if we're in the hospital and like when to pull the plug and all his fun stuff. That isn't isn't fun but I mean it's necessarily happen. I would you say knock on wood or freak whatever says but it's. It's just a good to have think about that too for example if you don't set up ahead of time I'm and you're very clear with your spouse about one to pull the plug if that is a thing. That is an awful thing to put on your spouse to have to decide in that moment like because if you're not aware like okay do they wanna be hooked up for like twenty days or do they want like. How long do they WANNA try until hill there is no trying? And it's like that as an awful thing to put on the spouse in that moment to be like it's completely up to you. What like what you WanNa do is uh-huh other things where it's like okay financial aspect of like damn like if you're going to be in their twenties that's our dollars more? We have to sit there and pay so I just want to out tiny one. That's interesting I mean it's it's GonNa be heavy when we have to do it but you know we'll give you an update to see. I think it's but it just stuff that's needed Yeah Yeah that'd be interesting experience with that like as we go through things like over the next few years as we like go back into buying a new place the will of course and just various like life things that like everyone should do. Yeah that that'll be one. We'll be recovering for sure. I'm curious for example like with the. DNR thing if your heart stops. Do you want them to try like reviving. You like with the handles. I go based on wherever the doctor says. If the dodgers like August so a fifty fifty chance sure Dr. I've nothing works tonight. Kill Me Yeah See. I don't know if that's how it works. We might have to be more specific. I mean I think because I think how it is is like some people are like you can take all all measures to make sure I come back to life. Some people are like as soon as my heart stops. Don't touch me like like there's kind of different levels roles and then like I don't know because like I mean I I would want to try to. I'm saying to give it a try because I was the doctor would give their opinion to be like. Yeah this is like a fifty fifty chance we can try it but we just want to make sure you're okay with it if they say it's not passed out. I don't know what we're talking about. Okay okay okay. What I'm saying? I don't know something happens to you. That's really bad they're doing. CPR CPR. But your actual heart stops then. What they can do? Next is the paddles to like. Try Revive you there is no like so there's a fifty fifty like no. It's like they do. They do not try. I mean it depends. I have requirements like if it happens and I'm like in my mid thirties. Yeah do it it happens. And I'm like sixty seventy eighty. No let me die like well. Yeah I think and that's where I think you'd have to like h Tom just like Doug Ugh if I'm still young yet try. Just don't overextend. You're so sure yeah. Once it becomes a burden I I don't really care what happens to makes really care like that old. Just don't care Mike. It's like I I want to say in my house and just walk around grocery stores and hang out at parks you know hidden people by accident your old shaming Almost saying like most just an age requirement. Like you know if I'm you with anything that's how treat like a friend or a family member or something if they're like if something happens like my mom or dad or something like like forty fifty years old. I'm not going to pull the plug if the option. I'm like no give like they still have ten twenty thirty four years of livestock. It to live so I'm GonNa say continue on but once you get like your old. I hear it's like a dog kind of handle a dog road. They're talking about this. Yeah let's just just my thoughts on it. So the next thing I wanted to jump in here is Talking about this Youtube uh-huh moderators being forced to sign statements acknowledging that their job can give them PTSD I think you're around while I was watching those videos of the verge like interviewing facebook and Youtube employees about like the experience when it came to like reviewing videos yes dog oh man so this is this is interesting so it's not a job I would want yeah So essentially really. I guess what's happening. There's some type of like law Cedar something happening In like this company accent Tra which operates as as a monster moderation site for Youtube in Austin Texas is distributing documents to workers on December twentieth. For are days after the verge they hold onto for investigation into PTSD among the workers and the facility unlike the childlike essentially cover their butts with this grammy. Now to fill you guys in on all that. So if you go to like the verge on the Youtube Channel There are two videos one where they talked to facebook employees about how it is to like you know take down content. That's bad I'm sure we've all stumbled across like I've seen it before videos on facebook way like this killing so like crazy. The accident is something that's very gory. And stuff. And like these moderators will go on facebook. And wherever people flag they review. So you're spending you know eight hour days. Amash maybe more if they do overtime up Shirley probably do or our much of just watching constant videos and images of stuff that people upload blow to facebook the most awful. I thought it was youtube. Well talking about both because look the most awful stuff you can think of like child pornography and You know killing people and just all this different stuff and I'm GONNA try not to get too graphic with it but if he watched your video they'll explain how like even how someone saw either facebook easy part of the video. We're like sewing saw kids doing something to like Lizard. I'm not going further with that. And like graphic how they were just explaining it scenes videos. And it's yeah you got to think about it because it's is to. Everything's reels the problem. It's not a movie you know so like these people are watching real. Authentic bad things happen our after our suddenly and like in that like does something to you. Yeah does you like do you like. How can someone do that to an animal? How do that to the person like? I've seen some things things like you know how you go on facebook twitter and they like have like uncover pa or whatever and they give you like a warning. And I'm like wondering wrangler should I don't know of course you get interesting. Click on it and like I'll discuss during now for me. Try to right the thing about the stuff that isn't on there true like if you know like the stuff that doesn't make it to these sites like humans going through that emerged in the US one piece of content. You're probably on it for a few minutes or whatever looking at like. Wow this is crazy. I can't believe rustlers. Imagine this job for eight hours a day looking looking at various pieces of very very graphic content. Remember how I said. I'd Never.

The Most Anticipated Movies of 2020

"I'm Shawn Fantasy and this is the big picture. A conversation show about the most most anticipated movies of twenty twenty men. And we've been talking all about the movies of Twenty Nine Thousand Nine on our various Oscars awards conversation shows. We need to look forward now. The reason we need to look forward is because new movies are opening and they're not these dingy horror movies that they try to open January third and trick people into thinking might be decent. Here's there's actual big budget studio movies with movie stars this weekend. We have little movie called doolittle and a little movie called bad boys for life. We've seen both of these movies. He's rolling GonNa talk about one today. We'll talk about the other one later next week. Hopefully you will have seen that other one after that but mostly we're GONNA be talking about movies. We don't really know that much about other than the names and the titles and we're talking about why we're looking forward to them. Let's talk about the big picture aspect of movie going in twenty twenty. I'll just say as I've mentioned at the end of the year last year. The little worried about who will people go to the movies this year. Do you think that I'm justified in my concern. One hundred percent. We talk about this on every other podcast that we make now for the big picture because moviegoing has been Ben. I don't even know if I WANNA say in a state of crisis but it has been changing and the way that people consume movies has been changing pretty rapidly and dramatically for several years now but this feels like the come to Jesus Year I agree so obviously twenty. Nineteen was deeply loaded especially by Disney with mega event movies. Not just the vendors endgame not just Star Wars Skywalker but the lion king and Aladdin reboots Dumbo reboot toy story. Four came through. There were a lot of movies. Movies that Disney at least perceived as moviegoing events now in addition to that we got a lot of great fun stuff we got once upon a time in Hollywood and parasite became a box office success. And we'll the four versus Ferrari and did very well. There's always going to be surprises. I would guess that the movies that we're going to talk about here and you're gonNA choose ten and I'm GONNA choose ten. They'll be some some big ASS. Hits hits among those movies but the movie is not the schedule is not loaded like it was last year. I think there will be a distinct or of panic panic around. What's going on at the box office? Pretty much by April or May I think we have our first taste of the panic. That's coming though. Yes yes so this week you and I saw the movie do little which stars Robert Downey junior as Dr Doolittle Let me say this movie is terrible. It is terrible will in a way that I have not experienced in my adult life and I was in a deep amount of pain watching it. I don't think you had negative reaction to the movies I did though well L.. This movie is very bad. Let's just get that affront if it is not a successful movie but I do kind of put on my. This is a kids movie helmet at some point eight and I think I'm not looking to be as rewarded on a deep emotional or cinematic level as you are or once. I realized that the movie is Robert. Downey junior talking to animated animals. Sure here's my thing. This movie makes cats look like grizzly man. Like it's really true. I think that I had a better time doolittle than I did at cats. That's astonishing still worst experience that I've pat movie in like five years. There was no plot and it was creepy people singing weird songs about what kind of cats they are I like I can't I know I've said exactly that five times but I will never wrapped my head around the fact that hundreds of people sought that that was a good idea. The wanting one thing. The cats and Dr Doolittle do have in common is that they are both based on previously existing Ip. There's been not one but two different iterations of Dr doolittle over the years. Of course the very famous nineteen sixty seven version with REX Harrison. And then Eddie Murphy came back as a doctor doolittle of sorts in the I believe in the early outs. This version has had some trouble in the reason. It is so bad ad will the reasons it is so bad manifold. Let's start with some of the production problems so in April twenty nineteen Hollywood reporter had a report about the struggles of the making of this movie. They wrote the new photography lasted twenty one shooting days not including new postproduction work according to insiders and came after an overhaul courtesy of Chris. McKay the helmer the lego Batman movie. Now Chris McKay was not the original director of this Dr doolittle movie which I believe was originally called the voyage of Dr Doolittle. Yes and it was written and directed directed by Stephen Geoghegan Listener. Stephen Geoghegan wrote and directed a movie called Syria which does not in any way resemble the story telling the joke writing the the general disposition of doolittle. Those two things have nothing to do with each other. It appears that Stephen Geoghegan was just a little bit out of his his depth in making a movie like this teach on report. Sources say that it's become apparent to the studio and producer. Susan Downey Joe Roff and Jeff Kirschenbaum. Last fall that the movie budget at one hundred and seventy five million dollars needed some surgery. Geoghegan is known for his Oscar. Winning work on layer dramas traffic and Suryana is his first time tackling visual effects heavy production. That was also comedic in tone own. Self they bring in these new folks Chris McKay among them. Also I believe the writer of the teenage mutant Ninja Turtles series was brought in to Do some script doctoring. Bring didn't help I don't think we need to recap necessarily story. It is technically a voyage. doolittle does go on a voyage. Why do you think they've changed the title? Because I have no idea. Maybe they're just hoping that if all you hear is little. Then you'll think of the other. Innovations I have Dr doolittle and then go see a movie when you say you. Who Do you mean? I people with children people who go to the movies. I don't know. Would you recommend this movie. The parents parents with children. I don't know what your life is like or what your parents rearing is like. I really don't. I don't know what you're looking for in a experience with your your children. We don't have to talk about the entire movie but can we talk about a couple qualitative issues with the film. Fire Way you turn to me about twenty minutes into this movie or maybe it was like seven minutes but it felt like twenty. It felt to me like nine hundred. And you pointed out aghast that Downey junior performance was dubbed not just align here there but literally his all of his voice work the entire film the entire fell. It's very obvious as you're watching the movie s and I also have to say the dubbing is. I turned back to you and asked whether other Robert Downey junior is supposed to be Scottish. or whether there were some troubling racist elements to his voice. It really is all over the place in not got a great way. So the dubbing does not achieve anything additive to the movie. We can only speculate what had happened. My guess is Robert Downey. Junior is an adventurous actor and he likes to. He likes to make choices certainly felt like he made a choice in the original shooting of this film used a certain voice or accent and then they the production decided. This isn't going to work now. It's possible that there was even a sort of production error like it wasn't properly recorded. Yeah that'd be incredible mismanagement of this movie. That's in play. But the other actors that appear in the movie and we should say a great many quality actors appear in this movie up chief among among them Michael Sheen doing his damnedest to play a compelling villain and my beloved. Jessie Buckley shows up in this movie. With two lines of dialogue. She sleeps on a bed. Basically throughout the film Talladega how. That is Jessie Buckley until about sixty minutes. And it's very strange. Antonio banderas shows up Antonio Matarese Oscar contender Antonio Banderas. Who is fine but none of those figures seem to be dubbed? They all seem to be using their natural speaking voices. And there's no eighty are in play here so the whole thing is just absolutely confounding and it is highly distracting as you're watching the movie every time you see Dr Doolittle onscreen and he is on screen all the time because he is the titular character. You're like why. Why is the track sink? Not Correct with the film. This is a film released by a major studio. How did how did this? Hundreds of million dollars spent on it. I don't really know it's it's it's staggering and an unfortunate You wrote down here that the dramatic climax of this movie is literally a Dragon Fart. Which is true spoilers? I guess I often as people in my generation do misuse the word literally. But in this case it's literally what what happens. It is literally what happens and I just I I was in and I was in pain in the eightieth minute of this movie. I was like God Damn Emmett. I'm supposed to be alive in the world. A little community harrogate that his bad movie. But I think I said to you afterwards. It was no less sensical to me than say Melissa sent. And I think I probably turn to you more times during the listen to it was like what the hell is happening opening. And what are we serving like the children of America

"Man, Robert Downey junior. John Fabra directed the first two I meant. Remember so distinctly two thousand eight. Battle that was going on between John Farrow, who directed the iron man movie and marvel movies when Fabra wanted Robert Downey junior to star in this movie Downey, who would do you remember? He's completely turned his life around. But back in the day at a history of drug abuse had a history of trouble with the law was not the most reliable person in the world, great actor, but not the most reliable person in the world, and pharaoh fought and fought and fought and fought to get Robert Downey junior that role which really turned his career around turned his life completely around when I talked with them both on the red carpet last night. They talked about it. I remember talking with both of you before iron man came out about. Your life and what you went through because you had such faith in the advert for that role now, look, counting a genius. What town eleven years later. Yeah. And now it's yeah, I, I think the ironman, Arcus complete and he's done us. All proud. What was it that you saw though that I mean like you really insisted that you needed? I asked myself at every day. You know, in success, search rewriting history. Let's be honest here. I did him a solid. True. But the other funny thing is and the reason.

Robert Downey John Fabra John Farrow eleven years
