"Now from CBS and face the nation Margaret Brennan on a tumultuous week in a Friday morning Margaret I don't even know where to start With how a White House recalibrates with inflation of what is the nuance in the day to today adjustment they're making to 8% inflation Well you know I think of it this way There was wall to wall coverage of the league of the draft decision on abortion The president has not given it a dress on that He has spoken twice publicly in the past few days on inflation Yeah Look at that and tell me which one Democrats are most concerned about right now in terms of political impact on impact on the midterm races We're going to be talking about this with Lloyd blankfein who I don't need to introduce to your audience But he's prominent Democrat I want to understand as well from him what his thinking is right now in terms of what the reality is here because there's a lot of political mudslinging even proposals to put some kind of national ban on price increases That will never happen We'll talk about that Are you going to have Sunday morning results of the Pennsylvania primary I don't think by Sunday but we will definitely have an update on it from Mike Fascinated by this And you've got Costa over there now Costa was in the newspaper business and unknown Was he Tell he joined and Brennan over Robert cost of large CBS now Yep What does he say about Pennsylvania Well he's going to be out there and covering this really interesting now three way race That this is not just about Dave McCormick and Doctor Oz now you have this breakout here Kathy Barnett this relatively underfunded conservative commentator who is running as the most quote unquote maga candidate there Even though Doctor Oz has the endorsement of former president Trump will we see a surprise here This Republican primary is this continued test of the former president's ability to be a kingmaker but what does it say when someone is trying to run as more maga than the Trump candidate We're going to have the latest on what's happening in Pennsylvania because this is a really interesting dynamic And Margaret I see you also have Mark Esper former defense secretary boy He's been in the news here What do you have for us there Well he certainly has revealed quite a number of bombshells in terms of what he says were unconstitutional Illegal actions at the former president tried to get him to take when he was running The Pentagon We will talk to him about more of the revelations in his book and what he thinks the future of his party is I mean just think about the conversation we just had When you have someone saying it was unconstitutional illegal wrong wrong wrong the actions when this man was commander in chief to now say he is still the kingmaker in the Republican Party as a Republican will hear what secretary Esper has to say Margaret Brennan on CBS the CBS television network Sunday morning face the nation here face the nation Sunday 2 p.m. in New York Washington D.C. and Bloomberg one O 6 one Boston newbury report that's face the nation this Sunday At two I'm Bloomberg radio Paul you've been doing this for a few years I made this statement and please correct me if I'm wrong Since he is the acquirer it's a different SCC set of rules than the leadership of Twitter as the acquirer commenting He's allowed to be more robust in his statements I would suggest He certainly is we've seen that time and time again over the career of Elon Musk He kind of has a unique relationship with the SEC it seems I mean they try to corral him but it's very difficult when his platform is social media but you know he has this bid on the table presumably out there and seemingly well financed seemingly well advised but the fact is his stock which will be used in part to finance this transaction is down 30% since he announced the deal Is that the number three And the Tesla shareholders are saying you know I mean if you just look at the stock we don't like this transaction So he has to take that into account Now whether that means he walks away from the deal or just restructures at a lower price and maybe includes less of his stock as collateral for loans which he has in fact done He's lined up more equity for this deal It is a better capital structure over the last few days But I think he really needs to think about where does Twitter fit in with his overall personal portfolio given his test Do you think it's just as crass as he just trying to set a lower price from the 50 ish level and bring it on down Very possibly I mean I think there were two things One is the answer I've never seen that in your career I was all the time You see it all the time And the one thing is the absolute value that he's paying for Twitter Does he need to think about that And then the second thing is the structure of the transaction How much debt will he assume and how much of his Tesla shares we have to pledge his collateral He's already restructured that to the benefit of the deal but we'll see if that's enough We will see futures up 51 points down futures up 290 with our news in New York City as Michael.

"All across america. The larry elder show tapping our toes to jive. Bunny and the remake of in the mood envision saying the words jive bunny. When i woke up this morning. But it's an unexpected life. We lead aren't what i do. Expect his calls and here you are. I have no idea what's coming. So let's find out eight eight nine seventy one sage eight eight eight nine seven one sage. We're in san jose. Jacob mark davis in for larry. Welcome happy thursday. How are you yes smart. I've voted in the recall election here in california and san jose santa clara county. The they're using the dominion machines jacob. Hey jacob jacob jacob jacob jacob word for you jacob. there's something you told christian you're going to talk about. I recommend you talk about that thing. Okay so Getting over to the topic Regarding General milley yes. I do believe. I wanted to get your take while you're on the air Are we going to find out that you know they say there's a nuclear football. There's two keys or one key. We don't know but did the general milley and his colleagues decide to because they figured maybe trump wasn't trustworthy. They did they take football key and give mr vice president right. There's there's there's no there's there's no word that that happened a that would be even more egregious than what general milley apparently did do which is without trump's knowledge go whining to his communist chinese counterpart and to comfort our actual military enemy. And say. listen if we're ever going to do something georgia aggressive. George i will give you a heads up. That was treachery of the highest order. But if your specific question is do we have any reasonable leave that they. They slept the nuclear codes away from the president's sphere nowhere to That that that's not in the woodward book. I will tell you that and i have a feeling if that had happened it would be by the way a word about the woodward book. It's bob woodward robert. Costa woodward is pretty compelling writer over the years and there some so should we creative bursts in some of of his work Some things that people have disputed but as many books as many words many things. He's done his his batting. Average is probably already robert. Costa is a reporter's reporter just a wonderful young man does good hard work A woodward book is made better with bob. Costa's his name on it. Robert cost his name. Robert costa's reputation may beginning winged a little bit through proximity to bob woodward couple reasons. The book called peril refers to the supposed peril of our national security situation because trump was such a lunatic goodman. Look what we had to do. And i bet they envisioned that there would be a reaction of of heroism. Thank god for general milley. He saved us from nuclear war with the chinese. What kind of idiocy is this. There's not a living. Soul who objectively rationally believed that trump even with his eccentricities was somehow about to do something militarily aggressive something bellicose toward china. No one believed this. Only trump hatred would lead you to have that kind of paranoia coursing through your veins so the very premise of the book. And bob woodward said this the other morning in the friendly confines of msnbc said well other countries iran and china and russia they were nervous about what trump was doing. Well hell yes. I hope they were. I hope all of our adversaries are rivals. Our enemies are losing a little sleep at night because of who the president of the united states is. lord knows. they're sleeping like babies these days and the other problem that so that's kind of a macro problem with the book. A micro problem with book. The book is is that it gives into a more than a few lies. The the fine people hoax. Are you familiar with the fine people hoax. That is the damnable live that donald trump spoke of the skinheads neo nazis etc charlottesville rally and said that they were fine people. He was talking about the debate over whether the lease at. You should stay or go. He said they're fine. People on both sides of that a media culture that hates him as conflated that forever. And there's been all kinds of articles saying here's like audio and video of him saying i'm not talking about the neo nazis. Okay so that is the fine people hoax. And it's in the in the the stupid book. Bob bob woodward and robert costa made a choice to include the by the way it's in there is it refers to someone's Reaction to trump or revulsion at something. They couldn't stick with trump anymore after he normalized or defended the neo nazis at charlottesville. Guess what boys. That's a lie. He did not do that. I long for a time when things like. That mattered already. You're something matters our conversation today on a number of things. Eight eight eight nine seven one. Sage mark davis in for larry elder more of your phone calls next. You're listening to the larry elder show uh-huh the latest reporting and analysis on the big stories of the day. Other daybreak insider fide cast. Its top notch reporting from.

"Meghani reports that the nation's top military officer is defending phone calls made to his Chinese counterpart during the final days of the Trump administration In upcoming book by The Washington Post Bob Woodward and Robert cost to describe joint chiefs chairman Mark milley as worried about what Trump might do before leaving office and telling China's top officer he would warn Beijing in case of a U.S. attack Millie spokesman says the general was acting within his duties as the president's top uniformed adviser Trump says Millie should be tried for treason if the report's true At The White House President Biden was asked if the joint chiefs chair did the right thing Sagar Meghani Washington which of course if not directly responsible to the question a responsive to the question but then again that wouldn't be at first for this particular president I would simply offer a quick opinion here that regardless of what fears he might have had this was totally outside the boundaries of his authority to either be talking to his Chinese counterparts in particular or to speaker Pelosi who has nothing to do with this entire process So whether he was motivated by something good or something ill doesn't matter he stepped way outside of his authority in my view Let's get the view of all of you of course at one 8 6 6 5 O Jimbo one 8 6 6 5 O 5 four 6 two 6 with our guest retired army lieutenant colonel Daniel Davis who is a senior fellow at military expert for defense priorities dot org colonel Davis good evening Hi thanks for having me back on Jim Yes glad to have you with us tonight Regardless of motivation and I don't but for example happy to buy into the Donald Trump view that this would meet the legal definition of treason But it certainly was vastly overstepping authority and as far as I have concerned grounds for dismissal I could not agree with you more strongly This is wrong every single way you want to look at it And in fact I've written a piece today that calls for his resignation or his being relieved of duty if he doesn't want to go down that path And the reason I say that is because look the story that's come out and the one that apparently The Pentagon is defending it just doesn't hold water I mean just point blank It doesn't hold water If he actually felt that way just on the surface of it then his first obligation is not to reach out to a general of communist Chinese military forces That's not the first place you go If you feel that strongly you directly go to the president or you go to the Secretary of State the Secretary of Defense you don't go to our greatest political and military rival That's just crazy on the surface of it But look let's go a little bit below the surface too The idea the president Trump was even contemplating and much less took any action towards going to war with China It was so stark that the general felt like he had to intervene How was even less water I mean just consider that Trump actually pulled back military action in the summer of 2019 when the uranians had shot down one of our drones because he was afraid a 150 people innocent people might die Now how much less would he be inclined to start a war with the nuclear power China that will probably cause tremendous casualties on this and possibly a nuclear exchange He would never do that He didn't take any action according to what's been reported So that's even another overstep that the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff acted just because he thought maybe he would I mean there was no substance to it So in every way you want to look at it he needs to go Yeah it really does I don't know Nothing I suppose that President Biden says any more surprises me but to me the president missed an opportunity to frankly a cut loose a loose cannon and to give his generic response I have great faith in the general milley said nothing whatsoever devoted to question avoided the issue and I'm sure that for example President Biden would have felt less sanguine about the subject had general Millie tried to short change his particular control of the nuclear football And I got to say I was kind of disappointed I thought at the very least he would say well we're going to do an inquiry and an investigation and then we'll take whatever action appropriate I mean but not your first reaction to say you have complete confidence any because he has just shown that really he does not he had done earned complete confidence And look the reason why I'm so much against this invite you this is not a Republican or democratic issue This is an issue of the republic of our country because look there's melly is just as likely to do this to Biden In fact our is that he already has to some degree Besides what was talking about here he thwarted the odds of the issue of the withdrawal of Afghanistan He slow rolls the Trump administration He tried to behind the scenes push back on the Biden administration And what happens next year if there's another issue that's the chairman really Does it agree with Biden on that issue There's no reason why he wouldn't do it again So for that reason kind of to your point there.

It comes after a federal appeals court in Philadelphia yesterday rejected the president's lawsuit to overturn results in Pennsylvania are Brennan Hazleton talked about it with the Washington Post's Robert Costa, who's the moderator of Washington Week. The judges are scratching their heads, but the people Around President Trump are not in calls to trump confident and associates in recent days. It's clear that the legal strategy now for Rudy Giuliani for President Trump has to fight. To the bitter end to show their core supporters that they're going to the brink legally and politically to contest this election. Now President Trump has indicated he will concede to President elect Joe Biden. That's a first if the president says the Electoral College confirms Biden's victory. Is there any chance of the electoral college? Not doing that? Not confirming Biden's win? There was a small chance of some kind of disruption at the Electoral College when it convenes in December a few weeks ago, and the Trump campaign strategy was to try to stop states from certifying the elections and the whole plot there, In very brief words was to disrupt the Electoral college if the electoral college couldn't rely on the results in certain states. "Blustery, colder Tuesday with highs only in the mid to upper forties. I'm strong team for meteorologist Mike Stanford looking at 60 degrees now in upper Marlboro 58 in Fairfax. We have 60 in the nation's capital at 4 10 in its quest to overturn the results of the presidential election without evidence of fraud. The Trump campaign could now be headed to the U. S. Supreme Court this after a federal appeals court in Philadelphia today rejected the president's lawsuit to overturn results in Pennsylvania. Joining us to talk more about that, and other developments this week is The Washington Post. Robert Cost a moderator of Washington Week. Good afternoon, Robert. This case there was rejected in Philly today came with what we've seen when other Trump lawsuits have been rejected. That's the judge's scratching their heads. The judges are scratching their heads. But the people around President Trump are not in calls to trump confident and associates in recent days, it's clear that the legal strategy now for Rudy Giuliani for President Trump has to fight. With a bitter end to show their core supporters that they're going to the brink legally and politically to contest this election. President Trump has indicated he will concede to President elect Joe Biden. That's a first if the president says the Electoral College confirms Biden's victory eyes there any chance of the electoral college not doing that not confirming Biden's win. There was a small chance of some kind of disruption at the Electoral College when it convenes in December a few weeks ago, and the Trump campaign strategy was to try to stop. "Harris are expected to address the nation later this evening on The Washington Post. Robert Cost, a moderator of Washington week joined us earlier to break down where we are We started with the feeling tonight on the Trump side. This is a Residency now in bunker mode, insisting that widespread voter fraud is happening around the country, but they're doing so without evidence that's open to top trump advisers in the last hour. They want to fight to continue in the city of Philadelphia in the state of Nevada, down in Atlanta in Georgia, But the problem for the Trump campaign at this moment for President Trump is that mail in ballots. Have been mostly cast by Democrats. That was the Democratic strategy all along and the president with roading confidence in the Postal Service at the same time, so it's hard to see at this point, a path for president from Bob in Pennsylvania. There are still north of 100,000 mail in ballots waiting to be counted. But they're also south of 100,000 provisional ballots, which correct me If I'm wrong, tend to be more Republican. Talk about that. And the potential impact you could have. Pennsylvania remains a state that is that the cross fire of the political battle the political war in this country because ballots weren't started to be counted into after election day. Now the Supreme Court of United States has allowed this process to happen. I didn't stop it before the election, But the president's team would like to see more oversight of everything that's going on. But at this point, so many votes that are coming in from southeastern Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, which are mostly democratic areas. And so as much as there are still votes to be counted and every vote should be counted and we shouldn't get ahead of it. It looks like it could trend in the vice president's direction. Bob I want to touch on something you reported on this week. A lot of Democrats were very confident going into the election. They thought they could flip the Senate expand the majority in the House as well as take the White House. Well, we still don't know if the Senate's going to be flipped. And the House. The Democrats actually lost some votes. They're losing some races. What about this expectation of a repudiation of the last four years and the disappointment by some Democrats? Abigail Spam Burger Down in the Richmond area Democrat I moderated her debate with the Republican Nick Freedom and what you see from Spam Burger this week it was reported by The Washington Post, is outraged about the Democratic Party getting pulled to the left. She fears that the parties is moving further to the left, and she thinks that that caused the Democrats seats in the House. President Trump End up Losing this election is a repudiation of him in some way, but the Republicans are clinging onto the majority in the Senate. They've gained seats in the house, and so you see across the country, not a wholesale embrace. Of the Democratic Party. That's going to be a challenge for President Biden. And that is the case because he has a mandate in the sense that he's not trump but a mandate for his policies. He'll have to test how far he can go. What strikes you most about everything that's unfolded this week. This is a political map that scrambled Democrats doing better in a state like Georgia than they have done in years. They didn't win Texas, but they did well in Arizona. Lot of California's moving into the state. But we also saw this week that the Latino vote in this country is not a monolith that Cuban Americans and others in Florida. Voted for President Trump. But Mexican Americans who have immigrated to become Americans in other parts of the country are more Democratic column and the president's team feels pretty good about how it did with Latino voters. But we see right now that whether it's white voters who kind of stuck with President Trump Latino voters were not a monolith. This is a country that's more tribal and polarized in red and blue anymore. Robert Costa, moderator of Washington, We cancel tonight at eight on TV 26 6 14. Have CDW G. "Businesses and nonprofits stay connected. Do more business online. Learn more at constant contact dot com and the listeners of Cake lady mostly sunny today, with temperatures from the mid sixties at the coast to the low eighties, inland, Livermore should see a high of 81. 72 in Oakland, 66 in San Francisco. From NPR. And you are I'm Tanya. Mostly, I'm Peter Rowe down. This is here and now President Trump and Joe Biden are putting miles on the odometer in the Midwest. Today is the 2020 campaign races toward the finish line. Both will hold events in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Trump will go on to Michigan, Biden to Iowa. And while the upper Midwest may hold the key to the White House, the race also depends on working class voters in Pennsylvania. President Trump seems to know that he has five rallies scheduled in that state before Election Day. Robert Costa is national political reporter at The Washington Post in Robert. Here we are heading into the final weekend of the 2020 campaign. What's the state of the race? It all comes down to Pennsylvania based on my reporting my conversations with voters, but also with strategists in both parties because this is the key battleground in the industrial Midwest, also partly in the mid Atlantic. And this is the kind of place vice president Biden needs to do well in and he's paying a lot of attention to it. This is a narrow racing in some of these key states, even though Vice President Biden was leading nationally pretty easily. Well, Do you see President Trump showing any signs of turning it around? In the final days, as he did in 2016, there's a lot of enthusiasm on the trump side. The question is, does that enthusiasm counter the erosion trumps facing in the suburbs and in the cities? Democrats are not going to be caught flat footed like they were in 2016 in places like Philadelphia or Milwaukee and you see suburban women based on my reporting in the polls, turning away from the president because of the pandemic, the pandemic remains the burden on the president's shoulders politically, even though he has a lot of energy on his side. Well. Four years ago, you took a road trip across your home state of Pennsylvania. That was in the final week of the campaign as well. And you ended up writing a front page story in the Washington Post, which essentially for shadowed The Trump victory to come in the state that year, and I know this year you checked back in with some of those people. Here's some tape from Elizabeth Parker, who didn't vote in 2016 because she thought Clinton was a shoe in I'm a hospice nurse, and I think the saddest part of this pandemic is that hasn't been controlled and it's been let loose. Do you blame President Trump? I blame the rhetoric that is used right now. It's almost called, like his supporters are acting. So there you go. Just as you said, people thinking a lot about the pandemic in this election. How would you compare what you heard this year to 2016? When I went across in 2016 took a 350 mile road trip. It was evident that there was an appetite for what I called radical change for Someone to really shake up the system, even if they didn't like President Trump's character in western central Pennsylvania, there was an eagerness for change. Four years later, many of those voters in western central Pennsylvania still like President Trump in northeastern Pennsylvania. They like him on trade. What you're seeing suburban voters, mostly white, liberal suburban voters. Moderate Republicans say they've had enough whether it's the president's character is handling of the pandemic, and you also see black voters as a racial reckoning happens in this country. Focused on reprimanding President Trump. Politically, They see him as someone who Stokes the fires on race, and they would like to see him gone. So what does Pennsylvania come down to this year which of these candidates is making a better pitch to the voters in Pennsylvania? It comes down to the protectionist Union Democrat in Pennsylvania, who lives may be in Aliquippa, where I start my journey on tonight's special or in Scranton, Pennsylvania, home to anti abortion Democrats like the late Bob Casey Sr. The governor and Bob Casey Jr. The current senator, they may have drifted, been tempted by the siren song of protectionism and nationalism and populism by President Trump in 2016 4 years later. Then they still agree with President Trump on trade, but is the avalanche of other issues and controversies enough to sweep them toward Biden? And that's the voter. I'm watching. That's the voter who seemed most undecided at this 11th hour. Can you tell if any of them are coming back to the Democrats? I think the Democrats hold gamble. Going back to earlier this year with Biden was that he could win that kind of voter over middle class Joe that was his reputation in Delaware. He's always touted his roots in northeastern Pennsylvania and that is the whole election. It comes down to those voters. The suburban voters are going to give biting a boost black voters what liberals in the cities are going to give biting a boost. Can he actually swing the Union Democrat back? What's the likelihood that we see a legal battle over ballot counting or some other issue in Pennsylvania and then after the election undoubtably, it's going to happen. The Supreme Court recently ruled that a Pennsylvania state Supreme Court ruling Constabulary short, it's going to allow ballots to be counted up to three days after the election. And that is to improve access to the ballot amid a pandemic. Democrats feel good about that. But the challenge for Democrats is the vote day count. Election Day count, maybe better for President Trump. So they're going to preach patience, and they have the courts on their side. But it'll be a battle royal, no doubt about it and you could see issues rise up about voter suppression are voting rights. Who knows how this plays out, but it's already being fought in the courts. That means to me as a reporter. It's almost certainly going to be fought next week and beyond. We'll see and you'll be there to watch it. Robert Cost a national political reporter at the Washington Post moderator and managing editor of Washington Week, his special report revisiting the Pennsylvania voters he spoke with back in 2016. Ares tonight on PBS. Robert. Enjoy the homestretch. Thanks for your time. Thank you. And as the candidates are making their final arguments ahead of next Tuesday, the Internet is continuing to pump out the names with some spoof so believable. Finally, at last So for me, One of the Trump strategies is to woo voters with endorsements from celebrities. And just this week we heard about an endorsement from rapper Lil Wayne and 50 Cent who 50 cents specifically a few days later recanted his initial support. What does the Internet have to say about Wayne's endorsement? In a way and trended on Thursday, he tweeted a picture with himself in President Trump's smiling broadly.

You see the president this week at a mass breaking from his own party, as many Republicans call for people to wear them, the president's not making that a priority. Let's talk about the race for the White House a little bit. The latest polling has Joe Biden leading in the battleground states tell us more about that and are Republicans. Concerned. Is there any chance we might see a change of direction in the Trump campaign? We will talk about that in Washington Week tonight on PBS, one of the reporters on Jonathan Swan, You know he's been scooping all week along along with others that there could be a shakeup in the Trump campaign. They've already re shuffled some of the senior roles in the campaign. The president, though he's focused on his base, more than anything, even as many Republicans say, maybe you should tack toward the center. Tell us, Robert, What's the most interesting thing you've heard this week? There's a bipartisan outcry over the Russian bounty story reports of Russia offering bounties to the Taliban for the lives of U. S soldiers. This is a story that's not going away.
