"I'd love to hear what Christmas finding in his is that yeah. The caliber of entrepreneurs is fantastic. I wrote a post just recently called the peace dividend of the seed surge. which was you know we've had seven times more founders raise a million dollars or more over the last ten ten years and many of those have felt now? Let me take on piles venture capital seven times more people have felt what that pressure feels like they've tried to fit into that. Unicorn costume over and over and over again and maybe they want something different the next time around and you know what when you look at Eileen study. It's the second and third time entrepreneurs who tend to be making the big breakthrough companies and so if you look different if you give them an alternative pass what's maybe that will attract the right kinds of folks. I can't help but things that it will Chris. What do you think this yeah. I would agree with that. I mean I think both both on the I. I felt it heavily on the L. P. Side for sure you know when I would lay out my vision for blue note ventures in the leadership piece piece in particular. The reaction was always very obvious to me. It was either resonating with someone in which case the fish would tend to go one direction or it was absolutely not resonating in which case I knew it was probably not a great use of either our time and and that was very hard for me. At first I for sure when I was looking to get those first anchor Oh ps and I was operating with the fear that it wasn't going to get to a point where it could be real that was hard for me to stick to the script but but I I did and much like Bryce I think at the end of the day the people who are on aboard or the true believers and wanted to come along for the ride and wanted to be part of the division so I was excited about that on the entrepreneur side I absolutely believe that it will resonate with the right people and I think one of the primary drivers of that is because of the entrepreneurs themselves that we've worked with that continues to be the the best source of ideal flow and the best. I think for for any entrepreneur trying to understand what it's like working with an investor the best the thing you can do is talk to other other entrepreneurs. They worked with. I mean it's it's out there. It's available. It's a real thing everyone has their own style. I'll not just the two of us are. Everyone is a little bit different in the way they do it the way they go about it. and you know I'm. I'm a firm believer that let's if you stay true you are and you interact with dodge preneurs way that comes from your heart and speaks to you are then that message message gets out there. You know I'm glad you you you. You shifted it. You know Chris to that because and I'm gonNA sound a little bit wii your older brother guys because I'm older than both of you for you know from where I sit and I've been. I've been coaching now for ten years. The number of entrepreneurs who speak to the same issues that both of you have spoken into an and Eileen did us all a favor by giving US language around this Unicorn but but she did not identify something new phenomena that's been going on. I think as long as human beings have been together which is this phenomena of ourselves is pretending to be someone we're not and who we pretend to be depends on different society society factors right when I was coming of age as an adult it was pretend to be Bill Gates rain and then it was pretend to be her her and then it was pretend to be this one in pretend to be that when in pretend to be this one and the result is this constant diminuation of self to the point where people walk around going who the Fuck Am I. I've been pretending to be someone else for so long that I'm disconnected it from who I truly am and the pain of that and but as macculloch Duca this this existential pain of being just disconnected from the truest sense of our own values. That's a that's not a phenomena that is limited to these times to the Unicorn Times now. I say this because I'm going to say something to you guys. I often say to other coaches. Were just beginning this experience of pain that you both had of trying to raise money for peace in facing rejections of trying to do things things differently of trying to fit a wear a different suit that is more fitting for you. Do not forget that feeling the entrepreneurs dealing with that every single day every single day and you you get to have a superpower. You get to have a distinct competitive advantage because you get to know what it's like to walk in there. She's not in some theoretical way of all I get. I understand what it's like to build a company. Yeah that's important because you both entrepreneurs neuron way but let's get to know what it's like every day to have to make choices around family or friends or face rejection and that's an experience that I you think entrepreneurs will resonate with 'cause when they come to my office nascent on my cash. Nick cry with they're really looking for is a partner partner Chris. You started to say something before you said the entrepreneurs with whom we were whom we work or we work for and then and you corrected yourself work with but I think your first instinct was spot them right right yeah Jerry. How do we help them connect to that. Do you know what I mean because as you know the coaching client relationship it is different than a V. C. I'm your boss. I'm your board member. My job is a board members to hire and fire you right. How do we give them a place. Make it avail empower them because you're right. I mean you and I have gone back and forth on this a little bit. which is you know I'm? I don't come from an operating background. You know I'm not going to be that board member. Who saying Hey I'm looking at your margins right now and I know Eh this is going on here. That's going on some you know or hey. I was in that when I was a CEO. I knew exactly how to handle this. Here's what you do right right. Okay so I'm going to coach. She brands okay. What feeling do you have behind the observation. Hey I don't come from that operation back operational background ground. I can't talk to you about margins. What feeling about yourself is implicit in that statement that I don't look look like some other? BBC's right eventually don't come from the same background that people say you're supposed to have to be a super veasey right and so therefore you're inadequate adequate some capacities route you right so hold onto the connection to that feeling slightly inadequate. I'm less than okay okay. Is it true or not of course not of course not and you and I both know the person across the table from me it feeling the exact same way exactly right right and so what you're really asking is how do I help them. Well the first thing we do and Brad fell denial talk about this a lot in DC bootcamp. We're going to do this this spring but the first thing you to his take care of your own internal insecurities. I do not do the violence and project them onto the entrepreneur because I feel inadequate. I'm going to overstate one of about to say and get aggressive. Your margin suck well. What the fuck do. I know who I'm just a V C. I haven't run a business. Listen fifteen years right right but I just read Fred's postponed just ripped right right exactly and we're all care about your grows large laughing because we've all sat in those board meetings were the blowhard starts talking right and rule number one get control of your own feelings acknowledge. What's going on so a simple thing is hey. I don't have any experience in this particular area but what occurs to me. Is this question right. One of the things that I always observed. Is that board members. I hint ask too few questions and make too many statements. You know what I mean. Guys yeah no I you know I I when I first laid out the idea for buono ventures a lot of people come to me and say well. That sounds great. How are you GonNa know who the authentic leaders. Dr And I got this very uncomfortable queasy feeling in my stomach. That's the last thing I wanted to be was in a position of ordaining deigning who was an authentic leader and who was not that as a in a lot of it came down to two that very feeling and and what I realized Jerry to your point was first things first. Let me try and model what I wanted to be first in terms of some some of those traits that in look it's all aspirational. We can talk about it all day long. I'm never gonNA be Bryce is never going to be Jerry. You're never gonNA be although you might. I'm not sure you might be one exception. Both time or Never GonNa get there so the the question is along that aspirational journey How can you model it and I've also found along the way is when you try and do that. It's the quickest way to get the entrepreneurs. You're you're you're talking to the entrepreneurs working for to to go there as well. It creates a much safer environment for them. It creates a much much more open. Dialogue in a kind of immediately breaks down some of the barriers that create the exchange that you embrace were just talking about which gets nowhere fast bets right so so. I think you said it incredibly well to your question you know. How do we help I. I understand what's going on for you. What I often Paul radical self inquiry what the Heck is oh. My insecurity just triggered now about to speak in that moment. I have a choice I can be aggressive or I could be supportive in generative in the relationship second to Chris's point to really connect back into the experience that the that the entrepreneurs having what's going on. I'm reminded a tick not Hans. Quote piece begins with me. Someone has to be brave enough to go first. Someone has to be brave enough in the middle of that boardroom to say. I don't really have the answer but here's a guess create space. I could be wrong. I'm just going coming on gut field here or hey. I have four of the companies in my portfolio and I'm doing that crazy thing. VC's do which is pattern matching because I afford the companies therefore I think I know the truth. The truth is invented every single time in every single investment. There are things to learn that you can carry over but a kind of spacious nece around that and I think that the first way it happens happens. Is that you you have to get control of your own insecurity which are constant and inevitable and always there. Does this resonate with the two of you. I could be wrong. I mean I see what I did. I mean as you've probably experienced. There's oftentimes two conversations going on in the board meeting. There is the business of the board meeting and then there's the show of the the board meeting right the you know you're you're now on board with someone who has a great investment track record in you want them to see you as chest super super sharp and the next time you show them the thing. You're really excited about the they're. GonNa lead it. You'RE GONNA look really really smart. You're LP's they're. GonNa think you're really smart art and you've built this relationship there right in front of your CEO Right in front of the right in the board made by making that super insightful question about their margins right and those are two very different things very different. You know well I think I I think you speak to another thing that it that investors can do to help the entrepreneurs just like CEOS can do to help themselves in help their staff..

"I mean, that's typically how it works which with that being said, I think is the only reason to hold just a little bit of hope and faith for Doc Rivers becoming a Laker coach if this fire lit. In. If this were to be a situation where the Lakers coach in coaching spot is vacant because Jerry West and higher. Doc Rivers, Steve bombed in high Doc Rivers. So if you're gonna follow that same sort of philosophy where it may not happen quickly. But if it's not as guy everyone was number two to bring in their guy that same opportunities happening now, this is a different scenario because Dhaka's verge of winning fifty games and taking a team of broken parts about the playoffs. So they may not fire him, but he may not feel as comfortable as perhaps if he was Wu and brought in as someone's guy as opposed to trying to convince the new guy that he's worth the job any chance. I mean, I'm talking one in one hundred any chance at all that Luke comes back to reason Luke sane this is because he's heard from people in the building. Look, I know it every saying we're not doing anything you're back. I think there is a chance I think there's a chance because I think anyone with eyeballs. No. The number one reason why this team was hurt in terms of playoff standing because they were hurt. In terms of percentage. Guys, percentages percentages. I look back zero for me. Oh, wow. You might me healthy. I'm too old to say never. Okay. So some say about seven point eight nine percent chance around that up to eight. I see. I heard one and some scenes low. I understand everyone's debating Michael Jordan or LeBron as the goat. Would you hear what I'm Jay did when he was thirty four years old. It's nuts. That's next. Hugh is pretty good. All right that call MRs some detail. You mean when he pushed trying makes some moon for the brand? Now, the amazing thing the bulls go up eighty seven eighty six that's how low the score was in game six of the finals in. There was Robert Chris there was what less than ten seconds left in the game at that point or something crazy like that. Yeah. Well, that era was when Pat Riley went crazy and just totally had the game ground to a standstill it when he was in L A was Showtime there were up and down there points when he went to New York, and all of a sudden basketball changed I know the rally was in coaching in that game. But it was that bully ball stuff that the whole thing it just been absolutely bad TV other than guys like Michael Jordan doing what they could do. I see I tend to disagree. Really? I don't think it was bad TV at all. I thought the nineties brand of basketball is the reason is one of the main reasons why people today say the NBA soft because they remember eighties nineties basketball. Yeah, they ran up and down according to eighties, but sometimes you've run up, but you won't come back. Knock knock you to hell out Rambus haram that icy grain action little Bill aimed beer, Rick Mahorn. I mean, Charles those heat Knicks games were that was like watching college. They were deadly. I had to change rules because those games, you know, what I'm saying. I remember the fact that join those rallies during those those rivalry gangs because it was so physical so tense every single possession. Mad the games were closed, and they were intense, but just from a static. It was not what I like to watch me. Now back in the day in the nineties when Mike was being Mike and put about the way to win championships. You had a twenty point lead. You had a victory today. You have a twenty point lead. You have a chance to win because pace of play and three point shooting and the loosey goosey in terms of team defense individual defense makes it possible for anyone any team any moment to come back the clippers right here loss two games. "President Trump promised special system to Foxconn chief executive told Reuters in Wisconsin, we're not building a factory. You can't use a factory to view, our Wisconsin investment. Joining me our rice former secretary of labor under President Bill Clinton, the author of the common. Good that is now out in paperback. Are you surprised Robert Chris I wish surprised it's not the eighth wonder of the world? In fact, there's no wonder at all here Foxconn, basically a lot of people. Doubted that Foxconn was going to make these jobs in Wisconsin. It was a lot of hype. And hype is shall we say nothing new to this president, you know, it was a thing that people thought was a con from the start, and it was a sort of pioneer in. What is already a tawdry genre of these kinds of throwing subsidies companies? This really was out for out and above as far as I can understand even in an area where that is pretty gross per job. Wisconsin was providing I probably the largest subsidy that has provided by any state in this kind of it is a con I mean, there's certain number of jobs that are going to be here. And if one St. provides a lot of money for those jobs to attract those jobs, it just jobs that don't go to another state. So it is a con-. It is just a job. It's money that could otherwise go to education and job training and infrastructure, and basic research, it's not really helpful to Wisconsin. I think Wisconsin is actually better without Foxconn than they are with this big subsidy and FOX. On. Yeah. The upside here is that what happens in a lot of these cases, the company does come and take the subsidies, and they don't actually end up hiring many people if Foxconn sort of pre cancels at least everyone can walk away from the deal kind of has not cancelled yet. I still hinting that it may want these subsidies. But there's absolutely no way. I mean, manufacturing jobs are not really coming back and large numbers. We have not come back to even to the number of manufacturing jobs. We had before the great recession in two thousand seven. Yeah. This is one of the sort of great promises of Trump. The idea was thirty years of kind of neoliberal trade agenda selling out the American worker themes that I think you've talked about that other people on the left have talked about that he revealed against NAFTA. That those trends are going to reverse he comes in. He quote, unquote saves the carrier jobs, which also looks to be more and more like a con he slaps on tariffs which have already wiped out the Harley Davidson profit you have Ford canceling factory in words town. He has not delivered on that court promise. No and manufacturing jobs. Remember, the reason that everybody wanted manufacturing jobs back is that they used to pay much better than service jobs, and the reason they paid so much better. If they were unionized. I mean, most of the manufacturing jobs today, particularly in right to work states. That's worth the called -ironically like Wisconsin. Now a lot of those jobs are not unionized. The starting salary is adjusted for inflation about half of what it was twenty or thirty years ago. So these are not great jobs, even if they were being created. They're not great job. Is this a better economy than than the economy? Trump inherited two years ago, the economy in terms of unemployment is a little bit better. Yes. There are more jobs. But Chris the great problem for American workers is not the number of jobs. It's the quality of the jobs, what people need are better jobs higher wages, more secure better benefits. That's the big problem across America. You've got seventy eight percent of American workers living paycheck to paycheck with very lousy jobs. Really? And that's the that's the problem. And this was the big. Here. I mean, the promise of the stop and carry also promise of this Foxconn deal, right? Was this is going to be a new era in which blue collar folks can go in and make a good healthy living wage and have a middle class life. That was why this was a tantalizing promise. Twice Scott water Walker and Donald Trump took out the building shovels to make this campaign appearance. And arguably, it's also why they were elected certainly Donald Trump across the midwest and cross and cross the rust belt..

"I think everybody would agree this is turmoil as chaos confusion it's not good for anything we always believed that there should be an orderly process and of course government is not clean order ever ever but this seems to be beyond normal bound we have convinced two very good guys robert kosta and jeremy peters to stick around and continue our conversation late into the evening so robert chris ruddy usually i mean we know the access he has to trump we know about their years long friendship when he says something it's usually fresh from farm to table and you can lay a cash wager on it being true it's still you think gonna come through yes and no grind calling around the white house today asking about romney's comments i said to my source is a direct surrogate for president trump easy directly reflecting the wishes of the president they said yes and no they say he wants his cabinet members to twist in the wind to feel uncomfortable about their positions he doesn't like their conduct and their decisions and so when ruddy gets out there and says he made the president may be making some changes the president likes it the president did not give ready his blessing i'm told to go out there and say schulkin that's why he's already was careful with his language you said different sources not the press said shokhin's on the chopping block but we do know is unrest is everywhere in this west wing inside of the cabinet little bit of cruelty to that jeremy like pulling the wings off flies it's also instantly traceable when you look at those last three officials we just showed all of them have one thing in common and that is that at some point before they were fired or departed the president defended them and talked about the health of their relationship on twitter.
