"A fabulous team score 5 runs. Robbie Grossman. I love and the braves have taken the lead. I don't believe it. So they come in the dugout, right? Having blown this big lead and their trailing 7 6 going into the bottom of the 9th inning and the here comes this kid because he's still just a kid he's the youngest guy in that Clubhouse in that dugout and he simply just kind of says we're going to pick each other up here. You know what I mean? We're going to win this game and then Julio comes up in the bottom of the 9th inning and hits a 117 mile an hour exit velocity that I hope no one got hurt out in the stands. There you go. Left field. We're going to time again. Julio baby what a moment. Time bomb game at 7 7. On and he hurt that pitch. So he ties the game and then who NEO Suarez won it. But this kind of gets back to his infectious personality and the guys really believe in him. And again, he's been in the big leagues for 6 months, but you know, I think he represents the best of all of them in many ways. And I think the guys saw that and just understood that, hey, we're going to pick up our teammate here who gave up these runs and we're going to win this game and lo and behold they did. And you know, at some point this year when we look back on this season, however it ends, we'll look at this moment as being a key moment, not a turning point. I mean, these guys have been good for a while now, but kind of a key moment where you really could start to believe that, yeah, this is really a special group. Rodriguez, he's clearly got some leadership ability at the young age of 21. And you mentioned this already. But it seems like he's got a pretty dynamic personality because he had his own YouTube show called vibin with Jay rod when he was still a prospect. Right. Hello. This is my show. Today, I will have my first episode of my first guest with all my good friends and the team and Flacco, Lauren Gilbert. Thanks for having me on Julio. We're going to have some fun. Yeah, we definitely want to have some fun today. So how would you describe his personality? Can you elaborate on his personality and his role in this Clubhouse? Yeah, and I'll tell you a quick story tiff. I met Julio for the first time in the fall of 2018. Or maybe it was the fall of 2019 anyway. I went down to Arizona and met him for the first time. And he's 17, 18 years old. And he had been at their Dominican academy. And he really devoted himself into learning the English language. And when I met him, he wanted to do our interview in English. It was really important to him. And he was really good. He did really well. And then afterwards, he more or less runs down the hall, and he told a Mariners staffer that he was going to cause parents to tell them that he did this interview in English for the first time. And he was just so proud, but even then he was just outgoing, fun loving, this guy always has a smile on his face, but it's not an act at all. And I'm sure there are times in his life and the big league game can be humbling, where he gets frustrated, but generally he has this sort of upbeat infectious nature that just rubs off on you. It rubs off in you as a teammate as a reporter when you see him in his smile, and I'm like, this guy's having a great day, you know? He's always having a great day. And it's just so fun to see if someone that young with that kind of personality. And just the impact it has on others. Well, Corey, next up, as we look at the formula for the Mariners success, you also wrote recently about the impact that this team's pitching staff has had on their success, both the starters and the relievers. So can you tell us about that? Yeah, I tell you what, if there is a singular reason why the Mariners are 18 games above 500 on their way, hopefully to the playoffs, it's their pitching. You know, they had a nice group coming into the year. They added Robbie ray last December before the work stoppage that kind of solidified the group. And then they brought up George Kirby from the minor leagues in May and he has been fabulous just really, really good. So now you're looking at a rotation of Robbie ray, Luis Castillo, who they got from the reds at the trade deadline, a huge pickup, George Kirby, Logan Gilbert, Marco Gonzalez. This is for my money, probably one of the top three rotations in baseball. And you back that up with a bullpen that is just as good. So yeah, they're aware they are because of their pitching. And I tell you what you could have the most dynamic offensive lineup in the world. And we saw this this past weekend with the braves. Again, who I think are really, really good. But if you don't have the pitching, if you don't have the starting pitching, you don't have the bullpen. It doesn't matter at all. You're not going to be playing in October. And so it's been there pitching that's really carried them this year. Well, as of Tuesday, the Mariners are 5th in Major League Baseball in team ERA. And one guy who has been coming up big for this rotation lately, as you mentioned, is George Kirby, who they only drafted a few years ago in 2019. So what kind of impact has he made? And what makes him so effective? Well, you know, to he almost made the team out of spring training, it was basically between him and Matt brash, who won the 5th starter spot, had some struggles and went to the miners, and that facilitated Kirby coming up from double-A, but they always envisioned him as being a part of this rotation. He played at Elon university and just a supreme strike thrower. You know, in a day and age where command can be so volatile in the big leagues. This guy is just fabulous. He just peppers the strikes on. It ends at 24. 24 consecutive strikes thrown by George Kirby to begin the ball game. First pitch the message. It's a fastball just missing away. It is arsenal of pitches are very good. He's added a two seam fastball here this summer that he's now throwing a lot, which is unheard of for a guy to add a pitch mid season and see so much success with it. So he's been really good. He's 24 years old. And I think with Logan Gilbert, who was a rookie last season, you really have some cornerstones for this rotation for years to come. So it's been a lot of fun to watch George, you know, he's running into some innings, workload issues. You know, this is the most he's ever thrown at any level, but I tell you what, he has just been fabulous. He threw a gem the other day against the brave. Two, two pitch. Counting. He's dealing tonight, folks, half a dozen strikeouts, 12 consecutive retired 16 of the last 17. It's a George Kirby night with a lot of help from Sam so if this guy, if his tank is fast approaching empty, it's not showing. Now you also wrote recently about some unsung guys who have played a big role for the Mariners this season. And specifically we want to focus on two position players. You highlighted utility man Sam haggerty and catcher Cal rally. Both of these guys have spent time at triple-A Tacoma this year. But as you wrote, they helped save the Mariners season. So can you tell us how? Yeah, I tell you what, this was for this wonderful season as this has been for the Mariners. I remember there was a day tiff. I think they lost a day game to the a's. And I think they may have been 29 and 39 at that point. And I think everybody's kind of trying to objectively look at this team and figure out why they were struggling. And there was no really no reason. They just weren't playing well. But during that time, Sam haggerty stepped up, he's a utility guy. I think he's

"Meg rally of fangraphs and I am joined as always by Ben Lindbergh of the ringer. Ben, how are you? I'm doing 12. How are you? All right. Well, I wanted to start by asking you about two plays where no one was doing all right at all because absolutely everything went wrong. I don't know if this will translate to a podcast because it's not a visual medium. And so we can not convey the complete incompetence on display here. I will include clips of the broadcasts, which will maybe hint at what was happening here, but I think there are two leading contenders for worst defensive play of this season or misplay. And I want to ask you which one you think was worse or I guess better depending on your perspective. Whether we're talking about the quality of the defense or the entertainment value here. So one was a pretty famous viral example here that probably a lot of you listening have seen. This was from April 26th and it was a walk off the twins over the tigers and I don't know, I'll play the clip here, but would you care to describe what happens here? I don't know if we can narrate it and convey what is happening here? Well, I don't know, let's try, shall we try? So this is the bottom of the 9th. This is the bottom of the 9th in a game that Detroit is leading by one run. There are two on and one out. Runners on first and second. And Gregory Soto was pitching to Miguel Sano and Miguel Sano sends the ball out to the warning track, and that is where our trouble begins. Because the ball skips off of the top of Robbie Grossman's glove and so he takes a moment to corral it. The runner advances to third and sort of is held up there because it's like, you know, I get greedy, you know, you have the opportunity to have someone come up with one out in the bases loaded. And then the yaki sex start. Yeah. Because with the bases loaded, the ball gets thrown all the way to the catcher. And then you'd think like, okay, you're the twins. You're in a really good spot. But then for whatever reason, Miguel Sano, I guess maybe thinking that the ball was going to roll all the way to the back stop. I can't quite account for Miguel suno's decision making here. But he starts to advance to second base and Ben, I don't know if you know this, but in the game of baseball, you can only have one runner on a bag at a time. Because otherwise, one of those, one of those cats is out. And so he starts to advance, which inspires the runner on second to try to advance through it. And then you think, okay, well, they're going to get a couple of guys out here as he tries to either retreat to second or doubles up at third base. And then the ball gets thrown rather than getting to third base as it was meant to so that one of the runners there could be tagged out because what they tell you to do if there are two runners on the bag is just a tag both of them over and over and over again until the until the umpire makes a determination of who rightfully occupies the bag and who is out. And they're just like, they tell you to tag out because sometimes both of them will step off the bag and then they'll both be out and then you're having a great time. But that, that didn't happen here instead, the ball sails into left field, a runner comes home to score tying the game and then another runner comes home to score winning the game and then Gregory Santa is just standing there with his hands on his hips like I don't understand how I got here. I made one mistake, but that was not the worst.

"Don't know that I have a perfect answer here. Robbie Grossman comes to mind accept that he hits for a lot of power, suddenly. He hit 23 homers this year prior to that, he was someone who worked walks and didn't hit for much power and does see a fair amount of three two counts. So someone like that, I think, but I welcome right in votes for the new three two Jack. Someone who is a decent hitter, but not a great hitter and almost all of his value is tied up and seeing a lot of three two pitches and working walks. Yeah, it's just the baseline thump of a major leaguer now is so much higher. That's the problem. That it does make it hard to find a perfect comp. Because the game is just really different than it was then. But yeah, I think that we can press is a good option. That's certainly closer I think to the spirit of. Days past than like Juan Soto where it's just like, oh, you mean like the best hitter in the league? Yeah. Are you trying to identify the best tater in the 'cause we have other names that we have for those guys? So no definitive answer, they're right in and let us know. Yeah. All right. Please, give us the thing to talk about why don't you last thing I do have an answer to this one. This was a question submitted by Miranda, who says I stumbled on this article from 2010 about the pareto principle applying pretty well to baseball specifically the 2009 MLB season, I was just curious if it still holds up for today's game. So the pareto principle pareto principle. I've seen it pronounced multiple ways. But it's this idea that often about 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people, and it's not a hard and fast rule. It doesn't apply to every field, but it is sometimes called the 80 20 rule or the law of the vital fuel or it has even fancier names than that the principle of factors sparsity. But it was named after an Italian economist and the states back to the late 19th century. And the idea is that often, you know, I guess the original formulation of this was that about 80% of the land in Italy was owned by about 20% of the population and this is kind of a handy rule that applies to various other things. And so Miranda linked to a 2010 beyond the box score post by Jeff Zimmerman, who now writes for Rhodes graphs and Jeff examined whether this applied I guess this originally came up maybe at the free economics blog and was inspired by a book called stumbling on wins by David berry and Martin Schmidt and they found that approximately 80% of the winds appeared to be produced by 20% of the players. And so Jeff was examining whether that was true, and he found that in the 2009 season it generally worked fairly well that it was like 84% of the war was produced by the top 15% of the players or something like that. And so it kind of applied to baseball. And I was curious as was Miranda about whether this would still apply and I think it has become less applicable over time and that actually pertains to maybe some of the sources of dissatisfaction with the labor market that is causing the sand still that we were talking about at the beginning of the episode. So what I did is I went to the fan graphs combined war leaderboard in a exported it for various years didn't look at every year, but I looked at ten year increments basically. And first I went all the way back to 1921 and I found that if you look at the top 20% of players that year by war, they produced about 76% of the total war, then I fast forwarded all the way to the start of the expansion era 1961 that year was 79% of the war produced by the top 20% of players 1971. It was 82% of the war, then I went to 82 because 81 was a strike shortened year in 82. It was 79.7, so about 80% of the war, again, 1991, same neighborhood, 83.1, 2001, 84.3, and then, as I mentioned in 2009, it was also right around 84%. Now 2011, it got up to 86.3%, 2019, the last full season before the pandemic shorten season. It was up to 87.3%. And 2021, most recent year, it was up to 87.8%. I don't know for sure that that's a record because I didn't check every single year, but I think it probably is, it certainly was a record among all of the years that I did check. And I think that makes sense because you have more and more players every year. So when I was looking at 1921, there were like 492 players when I exported the combined war reader board so I was looking at the top 98 of four 92, this past season, 1508, players, and I was looking at the top three O two out of 1508. And I think it makes sense because as we have discussed, more and more players are appearing every year and also a higher percentage of those players are making the league minimum when they're in the major leagues and are just in these interchangeable roles where they're just in the back of the bullpen and they're shuffling back and forth from the big leagues to triple-A and maybe they're just replacement players or they don't have much time to accrue value. And so I think there's this long tail now of MLB players who are not producing a lot of value because they're maybe not great and be they're not getting much playing time. And so if you look at the top players, they're now accounting for if you round up about 90% of the value whereas historically speaking, it was 80% if you round to the nearest ten. So I think that reflects the actual changes in the way that players are being used these days, which also has some bearing on what players are asking for here and trying to raise the league minimum salary and get players paid earlier in their career, et cetera. Just because more of the playing time has shifted as Travis and others have shown has shifted toward players in these kind of interchangeable paid the league minimum roles. It is more imperative that the Players Association try to get those players paid. So I think that is reflected in the fact that MLB no longer seems to map onto the pareto principle very well. Yeah. And I think if you, this is just a shameless opportunity for me to plug a thing. Are you ready for me to show this thing? This isn't quite, you know, pre arb guys, but if you're curious about how players start to be compensated as they go through the arbitration process and the impact of the minimum salary increases, who would point you to some of the good works.

"And as mark mentioned there is a third baseman on the cleveland guardians who the jays reportedly tried to trade for this past summer The report came out last night. I don't know if you guys saw that it was him and robbie grossman. I would not be surprised. And i'm not gonna guarantee anything that they're they try again this offseason. They need a third baseman. They need a regular permanent third baseman cabin. Bijou was not comfortable at third base santiago. Espinel obviously is good. But you need more. And if you're gonna lose marcus assuming because that's a high possibility you need to try and get somebody to come in. So that is what i'm saying that is in the event that marcus simeon is. Not back i do think they kind of circle around and try and do it again. With jose. Ramirez there is a connection. We know the cleveland connection by either way going back to the prediction. You come a little. Bit off the rails. They're so back to the prediction for santiago manal. Yes it was a great season for him. And i think he blew away a lot of expectations and kind of you know outperformed what we all thought and pretty much going back to june. I remember we had a topic about this and we it was. I think it was actually a headline of one of the episodes was to santiago espinel deserve more playing time and we all kind of understood that if joe panic was still here he was not going to get that opportunity so the jays make trade they got obviously we know the trade to get dickerson and they get number for joe panic. That opened up a that opened up a complete path. For santiago's aspen on the play. Every day alongside injury to kevin bijou so for somebody who took advantage of all the playing time and all the opportunities he had because he did amazing numbers throw ninety two games i know he had some time where he missed because of his injury. But you know three. Eleven average through seventy six on base percentage of four zero. Five slugging percentage. That's a pretty decent opium. That's an almost at eight hundred and a war of two point two. He did really well. He can field and that somebody who i think's gonna have it good role in this team next year regardless like i was mentioning if he's gonna be platoon having bg of somewhere. Because kevin bijou. I'm not ready to write off yet. I don't know if he's back next year. Not if he's in a potential you can't obviously guarantee anything but if he's on the roster next year i am not ready to write him off and i do think he has a. He's a prime candidate for a bounceback season extra. I think that's all we're hoping for and for mcguire. Who had an interesting twenty twenty on and off the field. A lot of us forgot about him this year and rightfully so because of the two thousand twenty. He had base off his numbers. No i don't really regret not predicting him that way or kind of involving him in the the whole starting catcher thing because obviously all a hundred kirk and danny janssen's seemed like an ideal pairing. That's how it started so we were right about how it started. Obviously we did not expect the kirk injury to happen where he went on the sixth day. I was glued. Danny jansen got hurt twice with the same hamstring..

"Opiates plus so he's turned into quite a good player after breaking in with the cubs. Back in two thousand sixteen and you know not setting the world on fire with them or with the tigers really but he has turned into. You know. I don't know if you'd call emma a building block or not. He was part of that deadline. Trade in two thousand seventeen with the cubs is practice for alex of ula and justin wilson and Also he was traded from the cubs to the tigers with s and he has kind of blossomed for the tigers and the question has been like where are their hitters. Gonna come from. They've got all these good pitching prospects and i know. They've made more effort to equalize things in the farm. But can oreo is helping you know between him and badu and another player. I kind of was considering taking. Robbie grossman like they've been a bit more competent and a bit more fun to watch on offense. In addition to the occasional historic highlight from cabrera. So yeah jamar can't. Reo who is twenty seven years old but has kind of become ecorse course stone of this tigers team and seems like he'll be around when the tigers get again which could be like next year in. They're already pretty good and he seems like someone they can count on grossman. I won't spend as much time on a former astros outfielder and he was someone who never really hit for much power sorta of like mile straw but last year. He suddenly hit for a lot of power. He had to forty one ice. Oh and i remember when we did. Our tigers season preview segment. I asked like are they expecting robbie grossman to hit for power. And i think the answer was like not really. I mean maybe a little bit but he has continued to hit for power. He has twenty two runs this year. Robbie grossman robbie narrow see that coming and so in that was just not really in his skill set and he has long been a patient player he takes tons at walks and when i was doing my article earlier this week on one soto in his shuffle after taking pitches in just how incredibly selective he's been like robbie grossman was coming up on a lot of the same leaderboards as one soto in terms of flake chase rate and value. Coming from taking pitches in the chase region waste region. And all of that like. He's he's saw. You know three fifty eight on base percentage despite not having a very high average and hitting for power and everything so yeah. Robbie grossman jimmer candelaria. So those are your final two. I guess i guess so I have to do to moore. I've got others. i can chip in his honorable. Mentions but we can do a little lightning round on your board. Well i have a couple again. I've worried that these are two prominent but we'll see. How much have we talked about. Weighed my leif. What's going on with miley. Yeah he's he's another guy. Who came up when ben was on to talk about wainwright's but prior to that. I'm sorry i know that. I'm supposed to listen to them. Even want him on to it. I was on vacation. No how they run out. I had more guys. I'm taking salvador cheating. It's a little bit of a cheap but it's not a terrible one so we have salvi. That seems good and then And then wade my late. They're finally definitely deserves to be discussed. So it's so perplexing to me. It's really a i mean like some of this is that he. He participates and engages in a volume business. You know throws innings and that's useful for the reds but wade miley. You know you just throws a lot of pitches outside the strike zone. he's thrown his his cutter a lot more. I mean he's there on. that's working. Yeah i did not see this coming. But it's time for him so see some other guys head on my board can just list off here dylan cease. I mentioned that the white sox are leading the american league in starting pitcher war and a lot of that is guys who've gotten plenty of attention whether it's lido or redan or lance lynn. But don't cease has been really excellent to and i will just stuck give dancing borsi some recognition because cease was on. His list of breakout pitchers this year and he was someone who like i think dan zips said should have had more strikeouts last year than he did but he is like totally turned his peripherals around and he was someone who was not striking out many more guys than he walked in now. He is definitely doing that. So that's kind of like you know. I wanted shut up. The back of the brewers rotation becca the white sox rotation to dylan see su who was a prospect in his own right but has been kinda overshadowed and he's been excellent as well. And who else like. Sean mnaya sean. This he was on my list because it didn't seem great last year and it's it's been better this year so that's good. I mean part of it is that he's i don't know it's weird because he is walking more guys so you'd expect that this would be going worse for him than it is. But i'm is on my list. He's also striking guys out so that always seems to help you know it's like strikeouts they're useful. Who else was on my list. Who i considered. I mean there are some surprise. Ricky's leg at dulles garcia. That's that remains. Cool and weird and and chris flexing. Hey let's let's shout out kris flexing. You know because we we've already talked about some improbable mariners pitching but we should probably talk about chris flex into because i think when he was coming over we were like..

"And you know when we talked about him at the trade And my concern about him but that the velocity has been in decline with him This year Dave before he hit the aisle the first time it was noticeable. Then it came back. Look a little bit better But we mentioned jason hanson's article about the fact that what the velocity of his slider being diminished. It gives that pitch more time to run out of the strike zone and then he's become super slider heavy as a result of not being able to command that sinker anymore. So again at some point. Some of these teams. That aren't even well seattle. Still seattle's closer to the playoffs in the mets are sorry matt Yeah they're still hanging around there. Still four games out because boston keeps losing and it's glorious So i can't say shut them down. But when the when he was with tampa bay they took their time bringing him back to make sure he was fresher so it whoever gets his job. If it's a job share it could be a. We know at least going to be ten days but maybe it goes on for a little longer than that matt. Are you in agreement on. Who been connects man up. Yeah i mean. I think that if one is roster fill in your desperate fuel-filter roster the other i think it could be a shared thing but when all else fails go go with a warning strike and batters outstanding writer forty eight innings forty six strikeouts ewald forty one sixty seven strikeouts. He seems like the more natural for the closer position. He's a better option for fantasy so he'd be my one to second rider. Tim in complete agreement. The do hits the i. Il with concussion of this gives us an opportunity to talk about one or are we going to be dropping. He'll do a right now considering he's out in there's not a ton of time left of baotou where he kind of fits in next year's Droplets this has been a fun player. Watch matt what do you think about a cuban do. I do think that it's probably safe to drop him. Because the tigers are obviously have no problem Dealing with the service time and things like that they don't they don't mind bring up rookies and playing them and but they have nothing they have nothing to play for therefore they probably don't wanna take it Too much risk with the do who obviously has shown to be very valuable. He's ten home runs fourteen stolen bases this year and i think that he will probably he's one of the few players that are definitely in their foreseeable plans to start in a guest in the outfield for the future so as far as next year i mean i would think you'd look at his teammate. Robbie grossman as far as where i. I don't know i mean. Grossman has track record of not being as good therefore he was getting discounted more this season because people didn't believe it but do this is first time peaking his head out in the major so i assume people will have more Helium on him. So i would assume that he's just like a rich. Man's robbie grossman going into next year. That's kind of where i think he'd go. I would be wary. I mean look at his teammate. Willie castro The there was kind of a similar excitement after him doing well. Obviously this is over. Three hundred bats allow more games. But i like the do twenty. No i think everything we've seen is is pretty legitimate at him. What about you just knew. The castro comment was what really spot on. 'cause that's he looks so good in twenty twenty Yvette at the with the numbers with the eye test and then just has not produced issue but padilla's east currently atop fifty outfielder You know he's just in front of Kika hernandez i'm going by anybody. Who's got outfield eligibility. Kiki hernandez many margot josh. Ross might give stransky dylan carlson. So the beauty of detroit. We've talked about this on this podcast. A few times is like with grossman in particular. They loved to go get vets and just give him a bunch of playing time. And that's where. I found robbie gross into extremely undervalued this year like when they went out and got him. You knew he was gonna play because that's what they do And same thing with jonathan scope. Both those guys were just afterthoughts undrafted. And they've both been tremendous pickups for people. You're you're taking on your bench With that but with the sophomore slump is. It's it's out there. It's mostly pseudoscience to begin a for the most part but when it does apply to some folks you're like see i told you so and with the with some of the guys that are going down the down the chart if you look down. There's a lot of depth. The're so am. I gonna take badu as a top fifty outfielder next year no This is where. I would go back and start looking for some more. Those track record types that we about with that like a good example may be like hey do you. Are you willing based on current production and based on. What done this year but do a four is the forty eight th outfielder. Jorges elaire is seventy-second ups. I seventy five. He's in the top. Seventy five on the outfielders You know he has shown some resurgence here with atlanta after looking the most year can kansas city But which one at the steel mats bit earlier audience here of two. Which one are you willing to take next year. I so lehrer. But it'll be so air for me depending on where he lands. Disability is a free agent at the end of the year. But yet it'll i mean i know like do steals bases in that has value. I i really worry about the underlying skills. Men were to sixty seven batting average but a In xp to fifteen because he swings and misses so much And i just. I worry about like the hit tool kind of cratering on him. I i think they'll be. They'll be speed. But i the fat the idea that he's gonna hit above the league average batting average. Next year i think is a foolhardy. It's tricky for me. Because i mean my favorite way to draft is the death by a thousand paper cuts in terms of. I don't like to. I like to draft a bunch of people who steal a few bases each. So if i lose one i'm not in a giant hole. And this is the depending on where he how expensive is this is the kind of player would go for like the ramon laureano. Obviously don't trust him as much laureano. Even the loredana was suspended but depending on if they're going. Louis these are the kind of guys i love to load up on in the outfield. I don't necessarily like to draft zeroes in in either a home runs or stolen bases. I love these guys to give. You both agree with everything you've got the world are going if that is the vicinity and then there's you know where your people are starting to take your favorite sleepers like jesse winker on may take shop there because by then There's not too many of those like guys that have the power and speed like you said. Robbie that's kind of throw. Robbie grossman last year. You're going to have to pay more for do than you did for grossman but at that point in the draft I of liked to pick up guys like this but yeah it'll depend on where the market decides they like him. Add one more former teammate. The the floor jacoby jones. Yeah and that's i live. I'm john so much for like a week. Last year i was all. That's the third justice for jacobi Nelson cruz He goes to the. I l. for covered related issues We don't quite know yet if he was just exposed to someone who asks calvin or if he tested positive Himself get him out of your lineups for right now. Hopefully we'll get more information prior to line setting on a monday but the question i think becomes One do we think nelson cruz gonna play another season. And where would you draft in next year. jason yeah..

"This season saw you run into those times whereas these vigils kinda need The information you know comes up then you know you have. Arm soreness when you're pitching many inning. So hopefully nothing too serious for them because they literally just got their entire team. They're healthy again right. You know the employment as their their batter's are all back Hopefully they don't want anything too serious happening too. Their pitching rotation because it is one of the best in the american league. Yeah absolutely the next thing On our list of things to talk about. I've just live check that it's still accurate because we've got an miguel cabrera of the tigers on four hundred nine thousand nine hundred million as we speak onto scored six runs as tool for against the orioles. Just check that you hadn't hit his five hundred we've been talking but it was robbie grossman in candelaria in somebody else. A hit the bruins sassou cabrera's sitting on four nine. He's enjoying the little purple touch. It and minute and it's really nice to watch. I think we've mentioned in the amount of m. swings tig without bitten. There was nor whiffs at all we shouldn't and he's a he's a player. What seems i give nice. Mon- didn't in a little indian summer for his career move. Yeah i think he wants to get this done at comerica bargain to joy reid. Because he's just been there so long in being in front of the fans and doing it. There would be a lot of a lot of fun to see that. And i think you hit the nail had that seems like one of the nicer guys. He loves the. You just feel like there's some players out there that just you know. I'm sure they all love playing the game but when they're actually playing the game you can see like guys like miguel cabrera that just. Just love being out there in swing. It's just so nice impure that He's just on the brink of getting five hundred career home run so he gets it done this weekend. Yeah one of the one of the highlights of the season aesthetically was emitting. Not over in the snow was opening day. Maybe faced as homer of this season. What should trump the bases in the in the blizzard quite satisfying the craig. Never old name to couldn't joe with chris davies the orioles in this. This is a block knew about what of another look kind of it is. It is career resume. It's really odd one because he went from obsolete hero to obsolete z. Will the reason we're talking about that. He's announced his retirement today from from bolton from baseball injuries on things but what career. Chris davis amoun. Yeah it's for for. Chris davis i mean he. I think they know early on his career before he was dealing with all the injuries you know he was a great bad. I think you know a power guy. drunk on a pull up his stats here in. See how he was doing early on area to two thousand twelve. Sorry three hundred dollars in two thousand twelve fifty. Three homers drove eight hundred. Eighty eight all.

"He'll they have a handful of their top prospects. Shortstops between logan david. Sanan a gallon. Who's off the olympics right now. Playing virginia say robert hassan. And and you know they just drafted another high school kid shortstop in In the first round this year so they have a little bit more depth coming through us. So yeah i mean. I think you know if you look throughout the entirety of assists in. I'm sure that they have some guys would be attracted to other teams if that's that's the way they wanted to go but yeah i think it probably has to be the right fit in always. There's kind of that That financial consideration for them too well to wrap it up. Let's let's just drop some names and obviously you start with the teams that are not doing well and willing to give up players and you know for prospects. I mean the twins in by the way doesn't josh donaldson play for the twins with all the move chapman. Too short put taylor rogers. Is there the the twin of tyler. Rogers with net be cool in. San francisco's bullpen. A mentioned the diamond backs but the cubs have all kinds of kimberly mentioned. kris bryant. You know boy if he goes The southern california kid. But i imagine he'd be willing to go to the west coast as well. You know you hear about joey gallo. And somehow the padres are all in on him even though their rotation is probably the the bigger need the rockies You mentioned trevor story. The marlins They have startling. Morte Trae man sania. The orioles tigers have guys robbie grossman about him in the outfield coming back to oakland but And and of course beyond scherzer. There's plenty of other Pitchers cale gibson. You've mentioned susan mentioned. You know the sunny gray susan. You mentioned danny duffy. But there's quite a few but he'd be he'd be my second choice. Actually maybe after even sure sir there are a lot of guys that are available. Just gonna cost so it's gonna be really interesting few days. John i wanted to kind of go back and this is also include. Somme stuff to what i mentioned about sadie which is interesting mentioning that he does not want to offend. Sort of the clubhouse chemistry. Can you imagine a bay area analytics Baseball team president of operations saying anything about team chemistry but he one of the ways he learned that was the suspect is trade. Which i'm not sure they will admit but It's you know that gutted that team And as a in both ways you know took the heart out of the lineup. And then lester came in and it was not a fit mc clubhouse i don't you know no matter what the higher ups say so They're going to be careful with that and that that alone can be you want. A guy you know will fit in. And that's i think for the giants is a primo consideration. Because this is unselfish. A-team as i've ever seen maybe the most unselfish team and that You know even just adding aaron sanchez. back which i expect to happen today in the bullpen or role. He's not really all that crazy about even something like that could be something..

"Do one and a half million this year so if you had him at the deadline you're looking at about half of that. The orioles are not contending. They were just put him in as a stopgap at the shortstop position so as long as he stays healthy i think he gets moved to a contending team here. And he could be a nice upgrade for somebody out there for the marlins potentially starling. Marta could be on the market. The marlins traded for him not too long ago. But with them being out of contention right now in the national league east could they look to move him for a potential piece. I think so. Y'all have corey dickerson. That could be on the move for the marlins as well. They have a lot of depth down the outfield a lot of kids. Who are knocking on the door for miami and again if they're not gonna offer marseille or dickerson. Qualifying offer specifically marta. I don't want to lose him for nothing this offseason and it'll be interesting to see what kind of package they could get back. And if it'll be equivalent to the one. They gave up for him just a couple of years ago. Kole calhoun of the diamondbacks as well. Yes he's still on the injured list after undergoing hamstring surgery but he could be back here before the trade deadline. He was off to a nice start this year hitting two ninety two. He's got a track record established of being an above average bat. He's also a solid defender out there and right field. He's earned an eight million dollars this year. He has a nine million dollar club option for next year that has a two million dollar buyout so effectively a seven million dollar decision for teams looking at next year and of course for calhoun. The big thing is going to be proving that he is healthy. But if he is indeed healthy is time with the angels now at the diamondbacks. He's showing he can hit and he would be a nice outfield edition as well. So a lot of these outfielders that could be available. All comes down to price. What are we going to have to pay to give up for these guys. Do you go from michael taylor. Cheap robbie grossman kind of that next year. Or do you go for coco. Probably the best of the bunch but again going to cost you the most when it comes to potential prospect return jacob stallings of the pirates. I mean again. He's not a catcher right. So catchers don't usually get moved at the trade deadline but he's been averaged defensively this far you know so far. He's sitting in two sixteen. He's a career to fifty six hitter. He's only making one point. Three million dollar option is controllable through arbitration through twenty twenty four catching position obviously has a put on defense and he's above average defensively behind the dish so teams out there again. This position is probably one of the most needy across major league baseball. Which is why you have guys who are hitting two twenty to forty getting paid top dollar because if you can call a game you can manage a pitching staff. You can frame pitches you can get calls for your guys on the mound. You're definitely somebody teams are going to go after here and this could be a move the pirates. Really look for if they're going total rebuilt again if they hold onto him. It's just due to team control. But if he's not part of that next window you think of when you're going to compete out there and pittsburgh he could potentially be moved next grammarian marquee the rockies again gray and story look to be locked in marquees kind of on the bubble yeah. He's twenty six years old. He's under contract through twenty twenty three with a club option for twenty twenty four. So i mean it's tough right. He's got a four four seventy ra. But if you pull out one of his. Most recent starts where he gave up eight runs in one inning. It's at three point two eight so he's got good stuff on the mount ground ball rate of about fifty percent. I think he could potentially be moved to again. If you're the rockies going full rebuild is marquee really going to be there in the next two years when you guys are back to contention. I think this is a three to five year rebuild. So of course you want to sell high. And if you don't think you're going to get your best return maybe hold onto marquee kind of like matthew boyd their detroit but if he has a good stretch over the next couple of weeks you could strike while the iron hot and ultimately move on from him. Spencer turned bill for the tigers potentially on the markets. I think this one's a little bit far fetched but over his past two hundred innings. He's got a four to two era and he's really been performing well this year. So if you're the tigers and you're looking at this with a no hitter on the resume do you sell high on turn bill. Is he going to regress back to the mean and back to his average. And kinda like boyd. Hey if you don't trade him now you're not gonna get anything for him in the future so this could certainly be one of those sell high situations there in detroit but ultimately i think the hang onto him just because of the upside. He's shown so far this season next on the list. I got some orioles again. We talked about freddy garcia. But john means left handed pitcher. He's currently on the injured list. Like we talked about there at the top today show. But he's been one of the best pitchers so far this year now is it due to the substance. He's been using sticky substance. People are accusing him but if not he's under team control through twenty twenty four he could get a nice return based on his performance so far this year the also have anthony santan dare in the outfield's santan dare was one of the top prospects who recently came up is twenty eight years old and again with team control and arbitration from clubs perspective..

michael taylor marta Spencer eight million dollars dickerson two marlins three Marta freddy garcia two million dollar next year seven million dollar nine million dollar Three million dollar corey dickerson five year one and a half million this year today
