"The sporting life rob McClanahan played basketball for Jim Boeheim at Syracuse now he is known as the trainer to some of the NBA's brightest stars among them Steph curry Kevin Durant Kevin love Russell Westbrook al Horford John wall he's worked out lebron James last year he was a guest here on the sporting life talking about his book net work two words written with Seth Davis it is a pleasure to welcome him back to the show now rob thanks for being with us up on garbage Adam so rob obviously the first question is gonna be how are your clients doing we know that Mr Duran tested positive what can you tell us about how everybody is doing yeah I think everyone should be on the NBA tell like just like everyone else in the country just at a standstill you know I I don't think that the thing that really is affecting everybody but I'm sure at least the NBA players is if the on the aisle you know it's like Adam silver say about two fifty people start up or business visa at all you can't really schedule what we're going to start wrapping up any workouts you know I'll be going ahead this season you know because everything is based on the scene think about it this season once we think of this is about that but we could talk about the draft right you need to talk about what it's what we're going to start up next year any character and then if everything goes up and you got to worry about you know the Olympics next year you know things like that so it's just it's very hard December right now in in the T. V. star against world class athletes you know formative deploys whatever it is it's tough because you know right now you're you're in the heart of the season wrapping up for the playoffs so when you when you got when you got a little proud of that that that that is just a plain everyday high routine now you don't it remembers activist you're supposed to have drafted to box and then the average so it's it's really just a time that you know no one's been on an individual template for so I was kind of just going day by day we're speaking rob McClanahan the author of the book networks he is a trainer a star trainer a celebrity himself with many famous clients and of course right now rob we're seeing so much of the world shifting to virtual education home studios for people who work in my industry all of that stuff how are you keeping your guys fit what are they doing right now are are you doing zoom training sessions that kind of stuff no not yet approval to early for that in the sense where first of all you've got to go to court so there's no sense in doing that drills what have you can go to a basketball court I mean I know some gyms in New York and what have you not only how to open the door the ticket went down I read I read you know a thousand to two thousand I would assume some of your clients had their own basketball courts at their homes I mean I know that's that's probably not true that many do but some of the but I think both have what they've they're kind of hotel wait will kind of jam rather than a court you know but NBA invite them to kind of lay low right now I think even if we do have a feasible because the general so the reason I wrapped up right now because if you do come back illegal file the complaint of the three months you can you gotta be careful you're lucky you too much but yeah I think eventually I'll be sending my guys you know some workouts you know I think starting maybe even next week the doing the rounds of forty minute kind of stuff you know hopefully eventually you know bye bye they wanted something like that I can start to travel but you some of these guys are not optimistic that something can happen you have high profile clients you have clients nobody's ever heard of what what is your approach now what are you telling people to do to stay fit this time when it might be more important than ever to be getting exercise yeah I think the main thing right now is home gym or not you need to get your body moving and I'll be sitting around watching Netflix all day which is easy to do you know the worst in the corporate side by itself up on the treadmill obviously you know you can do in some ways to do it you know the jail work out push ups pull up something like that but I think the main thing too many things here are number one eating right that's a that's a huge thing every now with athletes but the everybody this this day and age hi it's very easy to eat some comfort food get take out every meal delivery you know just be late really you know and that's that's scary because if you get in the habit of that vehicle did a lot of problems specially for for an athlete never mind a unit you normal normal person but I think all of us need to deal aware of that even the right thanksgiving under trance sound cliche but right now it's very easy to eat bad not really care about it not your good enough water it's not working out a lot and then sleep because of in okay it is not a good time to get some good sleep let's face it so though the two main things had been right now at least my athletes should be doing is far as the normal course of not like a pro sports should be doing the same thing I don't know how long this will last but it's a good time to create good habits I think rather than bad they cover thank god of a you know just just accepted it indeed well and it is really hard for yourself because this can lead to bad habits that could that could continue after this you know so you don't want that you don't want to do that we speak to the trainer the stars rob McClanahan his book network co written with Seth Davis is available in and rob it's something that none of us have dealt with in our lifetimes this kind of situation it's it's you know the word that is used so frequently but applies is surreal it is a trainer you're you're working on bodies but you're also working on psyches and you're also dealing with emotions and sometimes a trainer I know can be a kind of confessor or a therapist from that point of view the people you're dealing with you know and we see the positives for corona virus in the NBA and compared Mitchell in Kevin Durant what kind of fear is there out there what kind of yeah our our guys dealing with this I should say emotionally he had been closed for the day that they're paying attention to what the league and then and and the government is going to do number one yeah I I think it's called Jeremy you know beat these guys for basically the whole careers go back to college I've had one that had a routine event schedule every single day you have to be here at night you gotta go on the court of teddy got still but twelve you got a commercial issue that to whatever it is it's all the side you don't have to you know I mean you would think you'd get nothing valley that you can't even leave the house so I think that's the stuff that they know a lot of people to stab no routine and have it not knowing what's what's going to happen even you know tomorrow you know so I think the main thing with with the NBA guys just gotta you gotta stay positive yet you gotta let this play out his lawyer might be the adolescent adults over age eighteen and but again you do have to stay safe and if that is your job you have a lot of other people working from home in different ways like yourself for on the computer it whatever your job is so they have the same thing they need to do to get a work out eat well the maybe study a lot of film I did break a lot of film for guys just can't unlock a few minutes at a time yeah I mean there's really there's really nothing we can do let's face it is you know decide spell it out so other than that look at the real personal tablet for it so that we can settle back forty years ago did it is not it doesn't matter it also yeah hopefully there isn't either I think I think the country needs support as you know I think it would help everybody I saw ESPN it will be from the Georgia dock at the huge for everybody that's right you know yes might be the.

"You know use treadmill or Peleton right now and it can kind of do that. You know because this could last another six months a year. We don't know you know so. It might be a good investment in time to really so doing stuff at home but I'm in. I'm in Rhode Island right now. The weather's sixty three degrees here. So if my three little kids for a little walk to the beach and you know what neighborhood but I'm not sure what to do. You know the eating is a victory is a big So I I realize we aren't. We aren't Nba Stars but I am interested though because I think we all should be And you're right. We're sitting around more and when you're sitting around there's plenty of food What if you had to give it basic advice that you? I'm sure you give to your friends in the NBA. As well. What what should and most important. What should we eat well? It's always you know eating. You know I'm always big fan of eating little things all day long rather than your. You know your big dinner at night. That the like that But you know look five those small meals all day long between this nuts almonds something like that. Maybe even a yogurt But Ninety yeah I mean I think a lot of people get in a lot of takeout right now I look into maybe doing a market run. What's a week and actually cooking? I think that's go a long way I know it's difficult. Some people on the market but people are delivering. So there's there's ways around it but the number one is cook on your own stay hydrated. You're not working on probably not drinking a lot of water. I think if you drink water all day long base where to go and it's going to help you obviously and things like that. So yeah they away from the fried food. Stay away from the pepperoni pizza at ten at night. When he's finished books you know so. Yeah listen we all know in essence? What's what's not good. It's just I always say it's just disciplined. That's all it is. You know if you're going to get takeout. Get Chicken Salad over pizza things like that. That's just every person has to have the discipline especially especially now. I realize when when you're when you're dealing in training NBA players They are two different level and they eat a little bit differently. But would you. Would you say that How how would you describe? What your your your friends and clients Would eat in the in in your players. Who at the highest level? I mean they have to eat a little more than Than than somebody who sits around and does nothing all day. But what do they I mean Kevin? Love is one of my best friends top of being a client and you know he had never seen any what disciplined than him in my life as far as eating so. He's taught me a lot in Hollywood disciplined fortunate to have the chef things like that and have the perfect ingredients organic. What have you but you know. But I. I've been with Kevin after a game in Cleveland and his his chef cooked You know we'll start off with Osama and then escorts is a is a steak so yeah they all in us. But they're also burning more calories than us The cabin just like reading example of a guy who you know. Even if he's traveling packers all stuff. 'cause you knows travel you don't pay fast food so he always looks ahead Stay hydrated all day long. Always have the jug of water on them. And that's a major thing. I think people forget. Just 'cause 'cause you're not doesn't mean you're you know you're hydrated to drink water. You're basically saying just just just drain it right. I mean whether you want to or not you have to quarter all day. Yes Oh yeah especially. If you're not working out what you really not thirsty drink of water and that no catch up to you you know I. I don't do much anymore but I used to get all those gallon. You know being awarded to fill up every day on and then the you know the gallon handle. Oh Yeah I mean supposedly a gallon a day they say yeah it is but if you do it all day long and you kinda still it up every day you kind of see where you're at and if you corner of that is gone. He's probably looking more of that. So it's going to kind of measure it really if you want to get more out of this though it it's easy to get the book network Training the NBA's best and finding the keys to greatness. I know you're keeping up with your clients and your friends. Are they coping pretty well? I know I know that's a strange question for guys that make more Usually more in a week most of us will see in a life but They're still human beings and their friends. Yeah exactly I mean the money the money and you know they're not going to be stressing about that like a lot of people in this country but But still you know that's your livelihood and that's what you do every single days if you've been maybe ten years old ages told stop you know it's not easy you know. I in somebody's guys you know they're on the road. You know two or three weeks a month so to be stuck at home all day long for the first time I did life. I'm sure it's yours ninety. It's a challenge for everybody and I think the biggest thing right now is the though you know. It's not like all right. You Know Adam. Silver says back May Fifteenth. And you can start to heal so your body ready get ready with. We have no idea we. We have no idea into any of these guys be able to come back and just start hooping It's not realistic. You're going to need another trainer cat. You guys prepare their bodies. Prepare their head for you. Know another run out for the summer. Lebron yesterday. You know his body. Everyone thinks it's good for the body because he's resting his buddies at shock because of twenty three eighteen years in the NBA seventy hundred NBA. Whatever it is. He's playing right now so his body is like what's going on you know so that's the other thing too. Even if we came back June one June fifteenth. You gotTA TRAINING CAMP AND DEBATE. So yeah the play without fans the whole thing is just. It's tough it's it's not easy to cope with and again it's it's the unknown stand on so you could go work out every day now. Hardest Heck but if you're not going back to July one why would you even work out like that? You know what I mean so you really want of you know peak at the right time and right now no one knows one. That should be so. It's it's every athlete in the world is going through it so it's not just the NBA. I mean baseball was a week away. You know they told to stop you know. So who knows you know? It's not you know what to do how to train and what to expect right now. So we're just going with it every day like everybody else but eventually disguise. Yeah GonNa have to go back on the court at some point so so that love where it went out Rod. Thanks for the time to and thanks for the advice. We all appreciate it. Okay well the night rob mcclanahan one of the great Trainers around a traitor so many major NBA player. We will take a break More of your phone calls at eight five to four two.

R. perhaps the biggest stars in the landscape of sports in North America and beyond in the man who joins us now takes care of some of the most valuable and talented and gifted athletes on the planet his name is rob McClanahan he's a trainer in his new book is net work to play on words network two words training the NBA's best in finding the keys to great as rob thank you for joining us HM I really appreciate it rob you played at Syracuse your walk on it Syracuse twenty years ago you're forty years old now what led you into training yeah I medical valid question at the big reason I wrote this book could take a question every date a lot of these guys trust you got four allowed walk on and I get it right the forty dollar question I know you don't have to get started you know I used to work myself out all the time in high school and rely on things like that but then when I really good Syracuse this so you know Mike Hopkins with one of my mentors you know what the work out stuff in in the just the way you would be working out got to chase and already taught Thomas and six AM to get different sweat in the bag and I really enjoyed it and it was I didn't even though you know develop most kinda like that and then after I graduated I I CO two September for yourself Florida then I went on to internet IG cavity with a bat what have you were just starting every summer does the teacher what I learned I was amazed you could actually work under for living. Nicole you know and I just assumed it was you know the NBA teams of your local to their delegate but that wasn't the option and so working out gets quite honestly just twelve year old what's your kids and reliable it kind of grew from there gonna be A. B. C. Campanella stuff so cannot just does happen and it wasn't really someone I look up to it was a template for because it didn't exist really when I was in a twenty four twenty four twenty five rob McClanahan the trainer to the NBA stars among them Steph curry wrote the foreword to his new book network training the NBA's best and find keys to greatness Kevin Durant Kevin love Derrick rose Russell Westbrook so you're dealing with some of the biggest stars in the game obviously you know what happens when you don't have time for somebody is not a big star they take it personally yes we have a few times it is because I really try to make time for. even the non stars because you know I've seen a lot of guys that you know what also the misstep car with all sorts of four years now now look at him so I was like the so called on the dog and and I actually like this why should anybody get better. so you know miles walking is always banditry calendar at like two or three but you only got you know it's the same work out real it's just maybe Kevin deal I'll see does a better so yeah they did they'd been tied yellow the web is what feelings but all in all I try to I try to you know. I want to say really well he's twelve years older Kevin. how much is the work out about specific things each guy is trying to achieve and how much is just. a template word general success in basketball. yeah every god definitely enough to be different so I go into the Mike did every year every offseason let's. you know what add maybe two drinks a big cheer game but also my book for us to be able to continue to work on your strengths I think a lot of players that especially young age they always work on the weaknesses right and not really what they're good at and I think as you climb up the division wanted that it be a you know you really have to figure out what you're good at in an MBA really got a great one thing really lasted that PA so was so with me you know of course you have dental of you know you could be a great shooter a Disney stop getting better at that right you know let's let's structures go fifty one percent maybe to thirty three percent you'll look folks really what you're good at it if they continue to work on your car you know cortical weaknesses but do you can approve it you know at the big there already you have a great eye for a long time but "Rely on ESPN radio and the ESPN APP the stars in the NBA are perhaps the biggest stars in the landscape of sports in North America and beyond in the man who joins us now takes care of some of the most valuable and talented and gifted gifted athletes on the planet. His name is rob mcclanahan. He's a trainer in his new book is net work to play on words kids network two words training the NBA's best and finding the keys to greatness rob. Thank you for joining us really appreciate it rob. You Played Ah Syracuse Syracuse twenty years ago. You're forty years old now. What led you into training yeah. I mean it's a valid question. It's a big reason reason I wrote this book -cause question every day why these guys trust you and sky for allowing walk on and I get it right. It's pretty valid question. I to get started. You know I used to work myself all the time in high school and rely on things like that but then when I really got Syracuse and saw you know Mike Hopkins is one of my mentors with a workout workout stuff and and just the way he would be working out Gaza Jason Hardy Todd Thomasson six. Am again sweating and bank and I really enjoyed it in and and it was I didn't even know you know develops. Kinda like that and then after I graduated I coach Seth Greenberg for yourself Florida and then I went onto Internet. IMG Academy with a bathroom cabinet was just starting every summer. 'cause I was a teacher in Rhode Island and I was amazing. You could actually work for a living Kinda the cool you know and I just assumed it was you know the NBA teams in the coaches were doing it but there wasn't in the office and sort of working out kids quite honestly just twelve year old four hundred kids in Rhode Island and kind of grew from there and I got ABC camp and all that stuff so it Kinda just just happened. I mean it wasn't really someone I looked up to and it was tablet for all because they didn't exist really when I was twenty four twenty four point five receivers rob mcclanahan trainer to the NBA stars among them Steph curry growth forward to his new book network training the NBA's best and finding the keys to greatness Kevin Durant Kevin Love Derrick Rose Russell Westbrook so you're dealing with some of the biggest stars in the game. Obviously you know what happens when you don't have time for somebody. WHO's not a big star. Do they take it personally yeah. It's only happened a few times because I've really tried to make time for even the non-stars 'cause you now. I've seen a Lotta guys that you know. We're also steph. Curry was all sorts for four years. You know now look at him so I always liked the the so called on the dog and I actually like just watching anybody better so you know my philosophy has always been your tree. Kevin Durant like retreat Julie Guy. You know it's the same workout relish no. It's just maybe Kevin Neal obviously better so yeah there. There's been times you know. There might be some hurt feelings. No I try to trust you know everyone to say really whether he's told me his old or Kevin durant honestly how much is the workout about specific things. Each each guy is trying to achieve and how much is just a a template were general success in basketball. Yeah I mean every every guys definitely in obviously different so I go into the mindset every year every off season. Let's you know let's add maybe the two things to the to your game name but also my philosophy is. Let's continue to work on your shrinks. I think a lot of players that especially young age they always work on their weaknesses weaknesses right and they're not really what they're good at and I think as you play up the Division One and then Mba you really have to figure out what you're good at the NBA. You really gotta be great at one thing really lasting. There'd be a so so with me you know Steph cards. You have example of you know just because he's a great shooter right doesn't mean you stop getting getting better at that right. You know let's go. Let's go fifty one percent. Maybe it's a fifty three percent so let's focus on what you're good at and continue to work on your cocoa weaknesses says but I think you can approve you know at the things are already been great for a long time but yeah there's definitely a temple. I think this day and age Jeremy I mean there's no more the big man drills. You know. You're not really doing a lot of that stuff anymore. Actually changed a lot since I started doing this. You know now few summers ago worked out Brooklyn Robin Lopez Awesome which I love your points you know what I did there pre-draft weight and it was everything in the post or the elbow the most you know so he and his team it's changed and that you know it's funny Brooklyn Robber and then we're twentieth now. They'll let's say thirty or something you know twelve during the league and we're working on threes broncos it goes in one of the best three years in the Milwaukee and he goes from making minimum two hundred fifty two million. It's up to you know so this day and age. It's definitely changed for the the players and therefore they may you know you have six nine point guards. You have six nine centers. You Know Jay my green played center it also I the data that a lot as well we're speaking with Rob mcclanahan the trainers the NBA's best players his new book is network training the NBA's best in finding the keys to to greatness and you're working these guys hard as everybody knows their health means so much not only themselves and their families please put the franchises basketball is a sport in which arguably single great talent can make the biggest difference make the biggest impact change everything with with that in mind. I mean it must be it must be nerve wracking at times when you see a guy hurt himself while you're working out where you know I it's every injury could have big consequences and you've got a you've got to You've got to manage that fine line between getting everything you want and not working a guy out too much where he could get himself for it. How do you manage that Yeah Yeah. Definitely I mean something I had really learned early on. you know like I definitely got better at it as as I continue to do this but you you know I got lucky early on my first major group was Rose Westbrook and K love and they're worked out to get every day and there's the hottest ever seen in my life so so one thing I had to do with them turned down and I've always said around the turn a guy down to turn them up but you know there were times. I had to say listen. I'm giving the weekend weekend off not because I'm lazy because I want to be able to go hard Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday next week so and I want your body recover and it's still you know June. Let's say you play you played eighty two games. He played maybe ninety games in the playoffs so everybody's different the way you approach it but you know the the days off. I always say is part of the train. That's that's actually part of the scheduling of days off and with me. I I go out. I'm very efficient now. It's not easy our but it's very efficient all game stuff some guys that Kevin Durant doesn't even want to water break so he might be done fifty minutes the It's it's an official worker. Everything's x-games stuff. There's no gimmicks you won't see me with fifteen years out there and ten cones and you know he's work has changed a little bit over time but I still stick the game stuff but a quick quick story about Russell. I gave them a Sunday off one time. He really wanted to work out on Sunday. I said we we can't go. You need a day off and going hard for three weeks. He goes all right. Yeah you're right. You're right so I got a call from a guy. UCLA said deploys okay working out my father. My God you know so so some guys you'd have said a compulsion for some guys it is we like people have have to run six miles every day ten k every day regardless because more about the mental benefits and the the endorphins that it is about the benefits from the workout physically yes. Yes definitely yeah that that's the kind of their drug. You know they need to have work out every day and you know Katie's. He's only greg sample. I mean this. This guy would do fly man all the time you know during the season workout in season and you know we did a Nike Torn Europe two years back and forth across Lona Paris Milan to Rome you think -cation sherlock but no I had to go to work every day and we we literally went every day so it wasn't like we got over there and like US chill out now but that's why they're great and you know I always say little few workouts. Change Your career no but if you add those up and sprinkling eliminate over the last ten years yeah those those really do add up and that's why listen that's why these plays a great. It's not it's not a coincidence. He's the man the the stars turn to to make them superstars. I usually stay away from that because I don't need guys show show then game staff looking at me but it's happened a few times where there was some resistance but I think especially when you work the stars you know they're not going to really say you can't come in so ninety nine. Percent of these staffs have been really go. A million in a lot of teams have let me use the gym whatever I want and I'll just put the knicks and Scott pray was great and then he let me work it out for a few days so definitely now I think guys no. I'm just trying to supplement what they're doing and I'm not trying to separate. Anybody's toes a matter of fact. I like calling the coaches and say listen. What do you think of the plan the plan using going to approach it. Is there a player you've worked out that has not heard about your three pointer against Cornell for the Orangemen the two three pointers up to three point. I don't know man but I'll tell you a quick. Yes there was a game two of the season so first first of all you grew up in Rhode Island you go to Syracuse. You very good high school player. I'll stay player you go circus with the idea of trying to walk on to Jim Jim behind teams yeah very arrogantly thinking. I'm just going to make the team easily so freshman year. I worked out with the team. The whole preseason and I asked coach folly well he he got back to me and hopping bring fine and let me work out the team but once trials came. I didn't make the team my freshman here. I was really really upset about it and so I ask coach Strength Code. What should I do you first of all put on thirty pounds of muscle. So is it okay fine. I came back with thirty pounds of muscle extra I put on. They couldn't believe we're the team again. Six this is six. AM workouts with everything they have tutors all that and if any of that so I just kind of with the team and I think the players started respecting me a lot made the team chose him thirty one at the time 'cause thirty one was fair play Reggie Miller right. They had a pretty good thirty one at Syracuse Syracuse it yeah so about game fourteen into my sophomore year. Dave Schoenfeld equipment guy who's now with the Patriots. I walk in December fifteen with no name on it in what's going on here so what's going on career. I screwed up. We walk out to the Dome for him because look at the raptors thirty one washing so pearls never for a long time and Bejon never had seen you with your with your know your over. He never you never took it off if they ever needed you in a game and had thrown in everyone realise this guy's world number. You might have been boo donal yeah. Definitely there's definitely not Pearl Pearl. Ah The next number fifteen. We're just wondering hello so metal have my number when he came to Syracuse. Did you try to get Jim Brown forty four. Do they still get out to the star player that one yeah so anyway my sophomore year. I'm sorry my senior year it was game two against like Cornell or something. We're up about a good forty. Let's say thirty seven and twenty seconds thirty six to three and made it so colgate taste and other shot. We get the rebound now. Fifteen seconds left in the game Bam's Jillette out. I'm on the right wing right next to coach right there Japan. I'm looking no one's CA. Ah Everyone starts shaking hands Jim. Mike and I shot it through all net. The two thousand twenty coach looks at me like Oh gay coaches now you might forty so we go in the locker room and dame was in there and some other guys and they say those three four that's what's GonNa do not blaming also also we tell a story all the time coach those some of the best times in my life and coach ended up really helping me with connections and stuff like that making calls for me the the book is network training the NBA's best and finding the keys to greatness trainer rob mcclanahan scrivner her books. "I think the pre-draft has become really sophisticated a lot of ways in terms of the preparation and the strategy the strategy that teams put into it but your job job as a workout guy as a trainer for an agent is to put the player in the best possible light and so in those workouts like you said you didn't want Russell. Westbrook broke out shooting a lot of jump shots. It wasn't a strength he differentiate himself. What does that lettuce way attacked the basket and that's always the push and pull right of predrag because you say you have. Pat Riley and Danny Aines and Sam Prestige in Buford and Jay was Jerry West and they come in the gym. They WANNA see weaknesses. They know Oh what a guy does well. That's obvious everybody they're trying to figure out where are the holes because they're trying to compare them to other people other players and your job is simply. Do do not show any of it and so like there's a push poll in the gym of Rob. Can you please show us. This and you're like you got. The Agent Cohen no right yeah. That's the biggest thing with me and the project process. You're really working for the Asian. You know the agent and the prejudge processes the one. That's actually employing not the player to player that had a paycheck. Get right so I. I'm working for the agent. I had to go on what the agent says. I think a lot of these how picks a big thing is no contact not only not playing with other players but also with me. Just let's just no contact. You know one zero kind of thing they call it. that's kind of what. I had to do so yet but jerry what's comes up to you and says hey can you do this and I got to say. No you want to do but I also want to keep my at my job so there's definitely strategy behind it. Not only for the you know me as a trainer but also you know as the Asian to protect your player as much as you can. What's The angriest you've ever seen a because sometimes it's not a group of GM's one guy coming through or a coach coming through. What was the most pissed off. You remember anybody where they just felt like. Hey I didn't fly all the way out here for this. I WANNA see that I want to say piss off but actually after that big rube workout workout of those seven hundred fifty picks for for some at the time and they had to be with is that it'd be on the fifty people and it was ridiculous again because we have the lottery and the funny thing is haven't had the lottery aren't did. He was controlling their whole draft. You know so people were really want to know what went on Jin that day because the download set the four if you think someone's going somewhere right so have to work out. Brooke and Robin worked out together again no contact. I'll never forget it. Ten minutes late after work at Pat Riley comes up to me and he says Oh man there's some good stuff and it was it was more than flattering he goes but let me do some stuff with them and he just walks on the court and I I know he's in that banging where Brooklyn in passionated. Tell the truth. Jump shot foul and I'm like Oh no yeah but I don't know what I'm GonNa kick rally especially in. La That's kind of what happened. There was only ten fifteen day but before you know he was out there sweating with them so so it was kind of funny but I'm just going to let them be but it yeah and and you know that group and then the draft comes and it's a draft that really really set a a lot of things in the motion in the League in the next you know over that next decade plus since then the other year that to me is really interesting. He is the two thousand ten free agency. Derrick rose is the reigning. MVP in the League he's coming off of no he was one year away from the MVP he was about to be he w- he was an MVP in two thousand ten eleven right but certainly had taken the League by storm Chicago was a contender with him and the thought was hey whether it was dwayne wade coming back to Chicago or Lebron joining him in Chicago. You know the whole talk of what happened in Miami until the end. There was a lot of discussion about it in Chicago. You're in the gym that summer with Rose every day and so I know whether it was management agents. Hey Do you you wanna get on the phone with these guys. Like what do you remember about the dominoes falling because a lot of it did center around Derek. That's summer of course I mean listen. We all know Derek is very humble. Saw Spokane guy no social media you know it kind of keeps to himself and when he wants to work he just wants to work and in Chicago when this whole free offers going on July and working with the facility when they're back in the suburbs there and get who was but someone in Management came down biscuit why we're like doing form shooting and a derrick income over for second you know this is the Brown was taken interviews and I think they're about to fly out to see him the next day awesome yeah and and he came back to me what they said was that all about milita they want me to go. You know help recruit Lebron and see GonNa go this. Hell No. I'm not going you know it wasn't of course he wanted. Lebron was only that it's just I'm here. You WanNA play. Let let's do this together but I don't need to go over crew on another man of complete with me and just he just didn't WanNa do it. Management Odyssey did one hundred do it. Dirk accused ago in you know ended up going his thing was I'm here. You know me you can call me. You can facing whenever you want to do of course I wanNA play with you but I'm not GonNa go to capital flight deck someone to complaint with me. This is the way it is in this way. Derek is and I was with them and you've been around rob not only the pre draft workouts and like you said then as the players get into the league. Thank you continue year round where you go spend a week or ten days with a player during the season and then go bounce and see another and the relationships built over time time but another place you were around a lot of was USA basketball time you know Jim Boeheim was on and Mike Hopkins whose at Washington now they were on my shefty shefty staff and for a lot of the players you were there trainer and so you're around it could you imagine the teaming up that came and a lot of emanated and was born worn around the time they spent with USA basketball. Could you see that coming in the time you were there. Did you imagine that that's what those relationships were going to turn into the relationship ship building that led to the Super Teams Yeah you could definitely see the camaraderie these guys in friendships and listen you know these guys want interest together for like the Olympics Starting Vegas and their first day for the next six weeks across the world on the planes together and they'll tell together other going out together every night in Vegas and then all the pre-olympic stuff around the country so you've definitely see the Camaraderie building over time and you'll see maybe a couple of like you know three guys going off on their own these other guys off in their own. You could see a kind of building now that I think will lead to what's happening. I only know I can't say I it did but the Olympics definitely definitely run on that had a lot to deal with it. You know and maybe plan together a I'm a free agent in the year. How about you do this kind of deal. We'll both be freed us at the same time and I I can see that definitely the book is his network training the NBA's best and finding the keys the greatness with trainer Rob mcclanahan books available this week at bookstores everywhere. You can obviously go online and get it. It's it's publish buy scrivner it is a great read for NBA fans for I think really for people who care about basketball at all levels and one thing rob and listen people will bring you in and you'll work with people's kids you're not with an NBA player or prospect all the time and there's people who will pay you. Some people have relationships with you help or I want to just fly down for a week and workout. It's become a- industry for you. Rob mcclanahan for others you you can make a living at this. There's not many who make living at this and you were one of the first who was able to build a trust with players and be with them throughout their career and and then keep working out younger guys as they come through. What is the industry though changed around young people like the expectations. There's parents parents have that somehow. You could come in because you work with. NBA Players and Sprinkle some magic rob mcclanahan Dustin. You know little johnny somewhere can become a pro. What what do you see at that parents that grassroots level now that that may be has been spawned through the industry of of you being with pros and thinking of getting you access to their kids going to transform them is definitely a lot of parents that approach me thinking ankle because I've worked with these these players in MVP's. What have you then. I can turn that came into the same right so the first thing I am just honest with them. Straight up listen. I mean value. We can go from there but I also think a lot more parents now are doing less camps in like the big college can't that they spend more more money on private sessions and clinics across all sports really fascinating to me because I would love to have that when I was a kid that one on one attention from a trainer you know some of the the NBA players right but I talk about in my book I mean my workouts aren't really different than NBA players to kids. It's somewhat the same workout yeah. I don't know I don't know gets as one hundred cones out there and a bunch of stuff. That's kind of just all game stuff so that's why I can do kind of both and it's really worked for me. You know I I really hold accountable. It's a big thing kids with. NBA guys. I don't want is late. Cheated not like all stars. I tried to bring a different different approach. You know I think a lot of these guys their whole life growing up the hill up people that just yes men and I try to bring that listen. I'm not going to be that guy you know. Nine o'clock means a forty five and I think they liked you would think maybe looked like you were walking to Syracuse but it's the opposite they actually want. Someone told them accountable when you go through the Steph currys the Kevin Durant Nance the Kevin Love's the derrick rose's. What's the common thread in the gym with all of these guys. Is there a common thread threader to that weaves through all the great ones because you're getting them very often and the off season when no one's watching and the gyms empty and it's just are you coming in the work or not I mean those guys named are prime examples. You know obviously and then Russell and John and just guys that those guys are never miss workouts number one. I mean those guys sometimes in the beginning especially I had to turn down. You know rather than upping always wanted. You always want to turn it on guy down but still I had to tell guys. Please take days aw please take a day off and Russell's a good example of I better take Sunday's off and finally the ticket Sunday off in about two o'clock that day. Get a call from a guy..

"Hey everyone welcome to another edition of the Pilot Hewitt Rob mcclanahan one of the pre-eminent trainers in all basketball his client list has been a WHO's who of the most important and dominant influential players of this past decade Kevin Durant Steph Curry Derrick Rose Russell Westbrook Kevin. Love and many more rob has a new book out called network training the NBA's best and finding the keys to greatness a great read. That's really a a window into this past decade of change in the NBA Rob has been on the ground floor of at all really enjoyed my visit with raw mcclanahan thank you we'll two. Here's Robb. The book is really good and I've had a chance to read most of it and it's an interesting roadmap not just to your career as a trainer rob but to the way the NBA has evolved and changed in the last year. You've been in the league the last decade. I should say that you've done done this and to me. Especially I think in your story you know you were a walkout. At Syracuse You Tried College coaching for a little bit and and you went up with Wasserman media group Arn Tellem who at the time was perhaps the pre-eminent agent in the League and at the time it wasn't new you know Neil Shea. WHO's the president in Portland had your job US earlier in worked his way up with the clippers as an assistant to general general manager to becoming one of the League's best president GM's and Portland in that training job for Wasserman and essentially right rob you would they would sign their players? There's that they were going to have the draft and you were the workout guy at a little Catholic Church in Santa Monica Saint Monica that people don't realize any time of the day in the spring I guess in the spring pre-draft her in the summer back then you could be walking by this tiny little gym and there's an NBA all all star game going on inside of there yeah I mean I went on started with Washington and seven eight and it was kind of different. How did it compare to the guys in the past because what we did was we're the first one actually have a guy that did all year long so I didn't just do pre-draft all right see next spring. It was Kinda like I was kind of on basically retainer with to go see the guys in season yellow was it was fascinating kind of Newton and we kind of created you know just it'd be only walking up. Wasserman awesome again is going to see them. During the season no Sunan pre-draft working on the summer and then they come see you in season as well your Mount Rushmore of clients and you go through we mentioned steph curry but Steph Curry Kevin Durant Derrick rose all. MVP's and elite Kevin Love Perennial all stars Klein. You've had from the very beginning getting you've been very close with John. Wall Russell Westbrook the list goes on but let's that two thousand and eight pre draft craft the group had and I think at the time you look back. It was a really interesting draft. Russell Westbrook goes forth forth to Oklahoma City Kevin. Love goes fifth things actually Memphis and traded to Minnesota right with OJ Mayo in that deal but you were as S. Teams were jockeying in that draft and go through the guys you had in that draft will working out with you. I just remember I think it felt like that. Whole draft was going through that little gym in Santa Monica because half of the lottery was in there with you yeah yeah definitely. I mean besides Kevin Love wasn't with Wasserman. I also had roast Westbrook Brooklyn Robin Lopez Gallon. Ira Augustine Anthony Randolph there are bigger stories in this. Oh you reminded me with Brooklyn Robin Lopez. I've heard there are some legendary stories of those two and that pre-draft you going at it including in like one of them getting mad and taking the ball rack and throwing it up against the wall that accurate yes pretty accurate. They were very competitive. This is two twin brothers so they fought like twin brothers in the Kapila twin brothers so I didn't really get mad at all. I said to the the older brother was. I'M NOT GONNA between it few times. The other brother was up there big guy great guy when they started out a little bit you may maybe when against the wall a little bit he rundown split up and I just kind of ran away but yeah they were really competitive. Just two of the guys I've ever met in the league. They had a little. Oh will jazz to him. Yeah the Russell Westbrook that pre-draft process to me was really one of the most interesting because of all the draft successes they've they've had an Oklahoma City and they took durant number two when Greg Oden when number one and James Harden at four his year and Serge Tobacco and the twenties. who was you know they they've? Stephen Adams. was you know in the lottery but Westbrook was really interesting interesting because he was an under recruited player to. UCLA had not put up incredible numbers in his two years of college near didn't play that much at all. What what was he like when he walked in the gym. What did you see in him because he wasn't one of the guys. Everybody was talking about that. You had derrick rose there. He was the consensus number one pick was no no doubt about that love was the UCLA player everybody talked about. What do you remember when Westbrook locked in the gym and you didn't know much about him? What what do you see right away. Yeah I I. I met Russell the summer before sophomore year. He came in with with Kevin to work out me a little bit Kevin said. Can I bring in. You know. This guy plays from. Ucla teammate and I said yeah sure bring him in so he came in an honest. I didn't know much about him because he was playing a game freshman year and immediately. I I saw very dependent within the work of very focused I think he was like forty five minutes early which she always is and then we started doing some drills drills at the rim and I was like Whoa what's what's what's going on here because it's not like he would just slowly dunk every dunk rough so we'll do the games and you know as a workout. He tried to break the the rim off so it was very interesting to me. you know he did have a decent little mid range stuff like that but his his athletic ability in his compelling it was just off the charts which you don't usually see to really on a workouts guys that know how to work yet because their whole life they did discuss through without just everybody based on. Skill Civil Russell. Every every day started really really showing me. This keeps working like this who knows also could he can be and then I got him in the draft and you know in this funny you brought up those players because the the final four was Kevin love and Russell versus Derrick rose it memphis yeah the final four in San Antonio so it was kind of crazy that happen and then you know basically two weeks later have these guys for pre-draft the wars between Derrick rose and Russell Westbrook Oh and head to head in that little gym and Santa Monica at the height of you know Derek Athlete. Nobody I mean he was as as athletic and explosive. Guard is the youngest. MVP In league history certainly that was remarkable but Oklahoma City looking looking back and they really labored on Brook Lopez Verse Russell Westbrook with that fourth overall pick and I think think if you took a consensus around the league people who were not in those who weren't in the gym everyday with Ross and had seen what they had seen Brooke had been just the more well known player and he it was big. He was a big man very skilled at Stanford Oklahoma City was going out on a limb and their staff Sam Presi and then Troy Weaver who at the time was assistant. GM now he has elevated title. You knew Troy both of you had a background at Syracuse Jim Boeheim. You hit doesn't coach. He was the assistant to coach and you and you were a walk on on the team and so what do you remember about their thought process. S. and it took some courage for them to draft Westbrook he was he was different like you said he didn't shoot it really well but they got caught they consent he had raw talent. Aurora ability and so I they had seen Brooklyn in Russell workout in the group workout that we do say Monica's which by the way it was one of the you know one of the most frightening things to me at that point because I look up in the stands is Pat Riley J. Where it's you know it's everybody so. That was the first time like. WHOA whoa this is serious stuff so they saw them work out and then they WANNA do a private workout with Russell just a one on one private no contact thanks we did it a private gym and Belair here in Troy and Sam came in and worked at Russell a good night that forty minutes and I took them through mostly stuff at the rim and the Russell's at the time I know he needs to work on the jump shot so everything I want. I want to show us. I'M GONNA hit tend to jump shots. I knew if I could show his explosive isn't isn't tenacity at the rim and he never gets tired and she'll for forty minutes straight with no water break. It's just going to help him so he had that happened and then the craziest story is after troy in Salmon. I decided to go to cheesecake and get so much well. It wasn't just launch a rob. We know you work out Brooke. We know you work out Russell so we don't know where to go right now with this. You've seen them a lot both of them every day for this point seven weeks. Probably this is probably waiting for the draft. This is not that light may so they just asked me you know. Basically what would you do if you Russ No. I'm not saying I helped make any picture like that. Johnson is. I told them listen. I worked out both in you're asking me where question asking me about two different guards big big and of course. I don't know what you guys. Snee- right now what you think you need and I'm probably not going to relay this information. What I what I said but it was it was a way won't for me because I knew this point. I'm more than Nixon. I really think you know but that was That was a moment where it was definitely crazy. How you know I work out these guys for eight straight weeks. I'm I'm Kinda. See them more than anybody in jams now coming to me for advice on what to do and that's what's interesting..

"And and it seems like we have a nice rivalry. Although the Celtics beating them with the seventy Sixers kind of nineteen eighties, renewed what are you wouldn't look at Joel Embiid, and Ben Simmons and the whole dynamic over there. Specifically when I go to Ben Simmons. I don't know if I'm seeing a little bit of underachieving or from saying he's right about where he should be, you know, second full year in obviously had the injury is first year. Are you happy with what you're seeing from Vincent, MS or maybe one a little bit more. Well, look, you can't expect him to become a better shooter this season. But I saw one stat when you know last night he had a twenty two foot or that he made at the end of the shot clock. That was the deepest shot. Ben Simmons made his entire career. And that you know, that that's that's something that that needs to be to be fixed and book, maybe Ben Simmons is putting the work in. But you know, I've got my to the ground on a lot of this stuff guys about here. Guys are working. With and you know, oftentimes trainers notable trainers out there. The the rob mcclanahan Trahan and guys like that Bill. You'll be able to learn from them. What guys are doing? I haven't heard over the last two summers a lot what Ben Simmons doing to become a great jump shooter. And his jump shot clearly has not evolved over the last, you know, two seasons. Now, he's still young still in his very early twenties. Maybe that can happen. But it is a little bit disappointed me that he's not at least a threat at this point to knock down three point shot. If he ever became a threat, anybody that watches him, those he'd be an incredibly tough cover because of how good he is off the dribble and how big and strong. He is in the post. He's just not that guy right now. So for me, he's he's an all star. But he's a bit of an underachieving one because that jumper. So as a couple on. When will we see the Gordon Hayward of oh is is it a timing thing? Is it a system thing? Like, what is it? You know, I think it's it's it's all the above. But it's it's mostly physical with him right now. I think he's skills are starting to come along. But there was a play in the second half of the game last night where Gordon Hayward went left elevated and couldn't finish at the rim. The, you know, the coordination from two years ago dunks on and I forget who it was that was defending him. But he dunks on that player. This one still doesn't have that spring back. Now, it's it's night and day from where he was game one of the season to where he is right now, he's improved significantly physically since then, but they still along way for him to go before we get back or seeing the athletic Gordon Hayward, you you remember him in Utah. He scored off screens. He made short cuts. He was a high level athlete. Those those physical tools aren't all the way back for him yet. So it's not he's not gonna be that same player until he gets those physical tools back sticking in the Eastern Conference a little bit here..

"If stroking forty one point seven percent from three this season, I'm still skeptical. He's he started last year incredibly hot as well. And then he fizzled out yet Charleston. I had had kind of had side conversations about Wiggins. And I think we came to the consensus that like has improved since coming into the late. I mean, unless the shooting thing Israel other than that he hasn't. At all. I'm not sure he really hasn't right now. I mean still inconsistent defensively. Still streaky score who doesn't do much besides pull up from from mid rates. Still hasn't expanded his dribbling moves behind. Besides that spin move. Now a lot of that circle. Spend he loves us sorta button, right? Yeah. One of the things that really stuck out to me in the past. When it was the core of Karl Anthony towns Wiggins, and Zach LeVine was that everything I'd heard from, you know, the locker rooms and everything and reporters talking about this. But it was Zach LeVine was the maniacally hard worker. Andrew Wiggins was just like never really mentioned in that vein. And that that really stuck out to me. It's like Zach LeVine has improved over his past better. Yeah, it's a much better player. Whereas with Wiggins, we're still kind of looking at this broad template of this, hyper athlete to three win can click for him. I mean, or I mean look for Victor Oladipo can heal your five Wiggins now is in your five. I don't think we will. Ever have that sort of role. But I'm sure it can click for him. Because really you're really just asking them to do two things you're asking to be a much more committed defender, and you're asking him to hit threes if you can get those two things down everything else can kind of open up organically, but we're still waiting on those two key elements of his game. And I think to the worth pointing out like if you look at this team last two years like Wiggins and towns, they were kind of forced into roles, and they're like, okay, we're a contender. You've got to do XYZ things. Make the team battery at a bind to this role. Do this do that when they're like, we're twenty two we should feel like it kind of grow our game plan of expand and flourish, and it's kind of flipping what Simmons and Embiid worn Philadelphia right right before? It's like, okay Simmons Embiid shoot. Have you feel like do whatever you want who cares her growing? Now. It's okay. Ninety nine with Butler. Now, you've got to kind of like kind of confine your game fit him. Now. I think with like Townsend Wiggins you have bunch of tough guys around them and they can Jack shots now. Right. So like this team makes more sense. Those two guys do what the best they can do. And they win. They're like twenty five twenty six they're ready to win. But right now, it's like let them just Jack Shaw. See what happens in one other note on Andrew Wiggins. That's interesting. He started working this summer with rob mcclanahan longtime NBA trainer, and he's the guy who's worked with Derrick rose this summer. And it's interesting rose. It's really his first healthy off season in a while and his shot again small sample, but looks improved. It looks more fluid. I think they worked out a little bit of a hitch at the top of his release piss shot looks good better than has in many, many years for grows and for Andrew Wiggins and Derrick rose, maybe there's something to that working with a new trainer sometimes at all. It's all it takes. It's like the right coach for the right team. These guys need the right trainer for them before we talk NBA sophomores. Let's take a.
