Many popular mom and pop shops have closed their doors as national retail tenants expand their footprint, many decried gentrification agreed as the root problem, but it's much more complicated. The rise of online shopping has destabilized the mainstays retail, historically, low interest rates is spurred aggressive commercial real estate transactions and the revitalization of previously industrial areas, such as Long Island city has transformed many streets into the new Gold Coast. So what does this city do or what can the city do to rebuild a retail landscape? A recent proposal to modify the commercial rent. Tax is a good start. Currently businesses are being taxed paying two hundred and fifty thousand dollars or more in rent. We're long overdue to raise that threshold to say at least a half million dollars. If not more bringing the gap between ten at capacity and landlord expectations, a healthy relationship between retail and real estate is crucial to the economy of our city. Branded RSS in the era of platform expulsion
"Hi, I'm Ellen Tepper today on beyond podcasting, we'll be discussing branded RSS in the euro of platform expulsion. Thanks. What shooting into beyond podcasting dot com way. We recognize that your online radio show is much more than just a podcast. Your show can be broadcast live, which is not a podcast. Your show can be heard on a website, which isn't a podcast either. Of course, you're online radio show can and shoot also be syndicated as a podcast by RSS where your listeners can subscribe using the standard pod catcher, or you'll shows own branded app, Android, and I o s beyond podcasting dot com. Kevin microphones interfaces, mixers, production, software recording techniques, based practices and mall. Now enjoy another episode, yon podcasting dot com. With your host, Alan Taber, you're listening to be on podcasting Mellon Tepper in the studio in Miami, Florida. And we have Chris curry of podcast engineering school from Colorado. I believe Colorado Springs is that. Correct, Kris. That's right. Colorado Springs about an hour, south Denver, right at the foot of pikes peak. Very interesting. Well, Chris has already become a regular since this is the second time that he's coming on beyond podcasting, so welcome back. Chris. Koren happy to be here. If you would understand the joke, I might say welcome back kotter. Oh, yeah, Mr. gun Mr. Qatar. Exactly. Well, today were here to talk about something different. Something that we haven't talked about before on beyond podcasting, and the name of the show is branded. S s in the area of platform expulsion and that requires lots of explanation. And Chris, of course, is the man behind podcast engineering school, and he's really, really good in audio recording and post production. But he's a podcast her and I wanted to have a friendly podcast or with me to stop me when I say things that are too complex and need some explanation. So that's why asked. This to come with us today, and I appreciate it. Chris, that you're here, I should have brought my whistle. I could blow my whistle when I wanna stop you. Yes, yes. Even though your site kick berry is not there. I might occasionally stop and say, what would bury say because of this situation or something like that. Yeah, several things in the explanation here before we get into the nitty gritty and some of the newbies in this medium might be asking at the very, very beginning, what's in our s s? So let's talk about that a little bit for a minute, and then we'll go forward from there. And I like to make some analogies as we go along. There's the official words that come behind it, which is rich site summary, although a lot of people just call it real simple syndication, and even though that's not the official name for it, I like that nickname that it has because it has to do with syndication. And if we do the analogy of a conventional AM or FM radio station, Kris, have you ever visited one in in your history? Yes. Yeah. Few times actually once when I was in cub scouts when I was real young, but but in my adult life, yeah, a few times I've been radio stations. In fact, you just brought the memory I knew had gone as a kid, but I didn't remember. And I think it probably was with cub scouts also. Yeah, that's great to know. Well, I like to make the distinction that if you're in the lobby, if you haven't come in back to the part where the offices in the studios are because there's usually a lobby and there's usually a big speaker on the wall and that speaker was just the speaker. It was connected to their board in their master control where you would hear what's being broadcast. It wasn't a radio. It was the actual signal of the radio before it went out to the transmitter. So when people come in depending on how you set up your show, of course, but at least with mine when people come in the visit directly on my website and they press play, it's like they're in the lobby of the radio station. It hasn't gone through our assess. It hasn't been syndicated and that's why I like that nickname because it includes the word syndication because of. We always want our shows to be syndicated on lots of different platforms. And of course the popular platforms include what used to be called. I tunes and now it's gradually being converted into apple podcasts and Google podcasts and tune-in Stitcher all these different platforms because we want to be heard as many places as possible. So my analogy is when you're sitting in the lobby of the radio station, it's like when you're on the website, at least the way mine is set up in it, maybe different the way each individual person sets it up because some of the people set up the website so that it's actually using a player that is connected through our assessment, depends how it set up, but at least the way mine is it's playing the MP three directly. So

"Oh, that's cool. Because I was, you know, I been a podcast Iowa. For years, and I just maybe that's why they use. I worked for me so I have. I don't have a lot of Atherton just don't use a lot of apps I need to go in and look and see, that's, that's, that's reassuring because you're centrally it still it's old school. Take their speed copy it pasted in when animal device. It's not as easy. So as actually talked in, you know, here's the, here's a thought. Then how do we, how do we revitalize our assess so that it has more the powers of what the one click subscribe and one clicks thrive in in apple. How do we make our assess again, more viable without having to explain cut and paste and all this stuff. You know, I've seen some people saying, oh, you should have one click on your site and should be one button and that will redirect apple this apple that. And when you do that, you remove the RSS from the picture. You still need to have a button for your assess. You still should have. Here's my arse. SPA should have that on your website. How can we make that button more valuable though? Make that but more so that these folks that are didn't start in podcasting in two thousand four don't know that this is actually what powers is whole space. How do we make it? Do we even want even mess with that? I don't know if we wanna mess. 'cause it starts getting the average everyday consumer coming to the site. It's one thing to say, you know, here's the ours s feed is another thing to start going into too much about it. You're right. I think ours is still goes over most people's heads, but having it available is still, I think very valuable in in in when I do come to people sites and I don't see the feed link. That bothers me. I think they really need to make sure it's there. Now he. The majority pod yesterday don't give to wits about our SP. They never put it on their website so they know it needs how it works to get them where they need to get, but they don't like even having it on the site. But it may make listeners today show at least think a little bit about it. And and then I'm not saying that Apple's going to start randomly removing shows, but they have removed shows from the directory in the past. This is not something that's that's new per se. Well, and if if if these big platform start getting flooded with episodes or shows that have only three episodes of people testing how to do a podcast and Apple's going to get, you know, these Cadillacs are gonna get flooded with the bad quality programs, and they're gonna have to start deleting more. I think, test test test. This test is attested. My brand new podcast. I'm walking in two years test. Does apple want that stuff in their catalog? I don't think so. Let's it's there. Well, they, they put anchors logo up on the screen. When I did the show, you know, they invited in the crap. So now they have to deal with it. Spotify and all the other platforms are gonna have to deal with it to stay are, oh, by the way I get an Email from I asked Spotify because he can't get in questions. What? What is a play Mead in Spotify? Oh yes. Yeah. Yeah, thirty seconds and it's going to change to sixty seconds. But for right now it's thirty seconds of someone has listened. At least there's definite was still a little vague that if they if they listen at least thirty seconds, it's considered a play. So how are we back to that episode and they listen some more. It's not another play. That's good. Because they know what people rob. Just as soon as you hit thirty seconds registers. Once you got past thirty seconds of consumption and episode, my understanding is that then becomes a play in their system that gets reported back in their stats. Okay..

"I joked when I got up there, it was packed and it was hot. I go Kay, we're gonna. We're gonna learn about podcasting and lose five pounds in the next hour. And you know nothing to do with the guy's a podcast movement that does not their fault on on the air conditioning and it's actually great that the room was packed. So kudos you can't ask for anything more than getting there and a full room and people, you know, telling you afterwards, I couldn't get in. So next year, hopefully they'll have some bigger rooms and and and the AC will work. Yeah, I think that's something you're gonna have to have is bigger rooms just because more people, you know, just more people are tending the sessions to. So then what they go from sixteen hundred to twenty three to twenty five hundred in that range near time and that that's a huge increase in one year. And I know that didn't look like Dan was too much worse from wear and in Jared or all. Look, they have stress too bad, but I know Dan was had a very determined on space most days. I didn't even bother trying to talk with them. I'm like, okay, this is we can always talk after the event. Yeah, let them get stuff done. Your stress level was pretty high. So I'm curious to get a reaction here and I'm sure you all saw the headline yesterday. What do you think about a certain entities saying that they are? They're capturing two thirds of the new podcasters and the podcasting space. I'm gonna re. I'm gonna change my definition of podcast. I always said it was you had to have an ARA says two point, oh, feed being in an apple podcasts. I tunes and I'm going to add to it and have five episodes. Now, let's rerun those numbers. Actually, actually, let's say you have to have three episodes. We're go. Five. You're gonna go fly. Yeah, go five. Rob, you're laughing, what's your, what's your? What's your reaction to that? Well, I, I mean, I do think that it's it's kind of a reflection of where we are. I think that there's a lot of desire from some big investors. And we talked about this last week that are interested in the space that wanna grow faster. I think that the common thread is that there's there's more interest in the medium and there's more interest in growing faster than we are growing today, and people are pushing the envelope and thinking that the pathway to do that is to do some disruption in the medium in to start doing things that that I think all of us have kind of like said, we're just not going to do. We're not gonna go there. We're not gonna do those types of things generally. And and I, I think we're in a different phase here. I think we're in a phase of of of maybe potential faster growth, but I'm just not. Convinced that no matter what these new people coming into the medium that it's gonna cause it to grow any faster than it's going to grow. It's as we all know guys. I mean, this is a word of mouth medium. It's not a, it's not going to grow like Facebook or Twitter or YouTube. This is this is a different medium than those and I I to give it number here. I'll give some stats here. That company claiming to route in third of the new podcasters one of the top for five top five, maybe three podcast consumption platforms looked over thirty days and that quote, unquote company in thirty day period. Eighty percent of their shows heads, zero place. Thing about that number eighty percent had zero place of the shows even though podcasters want going in and playing them. And it got almost like eighty five percent or whereas over well over ninety percent where less than like a lesson night, we're less than ten place so it the numbers are a complete wash. Oh yeah, there's people coming in, you lose the seeing, hey, does this thing work? Hey, is the mic on Hello? Hello. Can you hear me? Hey, mom look at me and that's still last episode. And it's the first episode and it's their middle episode and it's their only episode doesn't even a podcast at dizzying qualifies pod fate. You have to pod start. But you know, but that said, you know, you know, based upon the emails that all of our customers are getting, you know, we have to disclose here..

"Yeah, I think it's just a matter of, I think there's a lot of players in this medium right now that are are tired of seeing one to three percent growth every year. They wanna see ten fifteen twenty percent growth every year. And I, you know, I just don't know if it's realistic to kind of come up with that. You know that there's people speculating about, you know, just having one or two buttons or only linking to Google podcasts and apple podcasts on near website or only narrowing down the the focus of the medium. And I think it's a little contrary to what built the medium. I don't know what you guys think. I think we should be everywhere and bright listeners choices for everywhere. You know. So you know, one thing we should ask rob, would we rob rubs rob him. And we're on scape arrive. Greenlees on the bottom entourage Walsh is on the top of those of you listening a rob walls, would it what was your takeaway from podcast movement? I know that this has been probably talked to death on all the shows. Well, yeah, you guys covered it really well. I wanted dri, radiate that one of the things that you said you'd mentioned the demographics. I mean, we were there. The three of us were there at the very first one, and it was ninety five ish. Maybe ninety seven, maybe ninety eight percent male at that first one. In this one skewed? It was. It was a lot more women at this one, and we looked at it just from appoint of you of just an nonscientific point of view. We ran out of our medium t shirts on the first day, and we always, you know, get the certain numbers, and then we ran out of the Smalls right after that. So Nitin run out of the extra large is or the two x or three x. And I don't think it's because podcasters all of a sudden becoming fitter. I think it's the demographics of skewed and there's all there was a lot more women there in that is obviously a great thing. I think we we take both McKenzie's ordered both women's and men's shirts, and they know I know that we gave away more women shirts than we did insureds. So, yeah. Yeah, I actually purposely ordered a lot more like mediums on on the women's side this year than I did the even the prior year because like you know, like you guys have been saying, I think we've been seeing this trend line for the last few years where it's it's becoming a, the people that go to podcast movement is pretty Representative of the general population now. So I think we're definitely it's much more diverse. It's not just additional women. There's a lot lot of lot more diversity in the community right now, and I think that's that's a good sign to the growth in the long run. I think. So I agree with you guess I'm multitasking a little bit today. I'm talking to my admin podcast awards were a release slate here in a few minutes, and he's I flip it. Can I flip it? You can't let that anytime you want. So. The. I just, you know, I think I think the overall event was good, but you know, we talked about a lot of topics last week that got some some serious. There's a lot of chatter about the show last week specifically talking a lot about radio, and you know some of the stuff that was happening at the show. And of course this week there's been some new in some new. I opener to just make she Wina read someone by the shoulders and shake him a little bit, but you know what, you know, rob your your session was probably fully gills to wasn't it. "And you know we'll we'll see if they're actually can it be number two in our system you know well you know i i want my own confirmation of that data you were you and i were both justified in our scepticisms there was no question until they they changed their leadership in they took a different tack terror i think the position that we had about them was justified i i don't think that they had shown us that they had any any willingness to do what it takes to be successful in the podcasting side but you know now i'm getting a different impressions well and it's you know because they're they're talking any notes let's be honest was i was i not happy not being able to get podcasters into spotify absolutely you know and so you know i don't think there's any secret in that you guys weren't happy that you weren't getting your shows in there you know and hearing from our customers all the time and we were having to send them over to a form to fill out they went into never never land yeah so you know i guess we'll see we'll see again you know like i said our our first batch of shows are in we'll we'll we'll start to see what what happens here yeah and you know there's there's more players coming in hopefully you know we can have conversations with them on you know and where the spaces and where it's going and again i i'm just i'm a podcast her first and foremost on i think that it's very possible here very soon that we're going to be able to to have the kind of submission process into spotify that we would have loved to have had over the last five years with with apple you know more of a submissions api based system so i think that's that's something that's also promising to and i would i would love to see apple offer some way for all of us to be able to have some way for podcasters to submit their shows die tunes right through their their publishing platforms yours and in hours and lipson on to kind of automate this.

"Yeah i had my i had a feed it was a bit torn feed and what's happened a bit torn is basically it's dead because of the bittorrent resemblance bit torn people move to blockchain okay because in the essence blockchain as a little well it has some similarities to blockchain so it's kinda fun volcanoes it's places but i just don't see it in the podcast bution world yeah d long we'll see but i'll tell you this are assess prevents anyone from trying to exert their influence on creators you know that's the k that's just you know in a nutshell you know they can't they can't stop podcasting no one can come in and be are the ruler and it you know you just laugh at them you know go away to we need to to take another run at are assessed though i mean is i mean i know dave dave winer certainly wouldn't be the one to delete anything like that but is there any thing that you guys can think about or think that maybe as we think about the future of this medium that there's something that could be done to improve are assessed to maybe our says three rob there's there's there's huge opportunity to coalesce around some tags and just do our own extension of our assists two point oh there is huge opportunity to do that because how're we gonna do it's apples did it apple a little bit last year he added.

"Ernie wasser have you guys are already covered blockchain why don't you tell us a little bit about blockchain room i i don't see i keep hearing blockchain this blockchain that to me it seems like the same people that used to run around saying oh gee you need to do og format and then the and the same ones oh you need to have chapter marks it you know it's it's it's the theoretical perfection versus the practical reality world just don't see the blockchain stuff rss is fine not just fine ours has his great and supports what we need to do i don't see the need for blockchain is there a theoretical way you can look at it where it's better maybe but better doesn't in technical perspective doesn't mean that are in a practical perspective so it was so once you explain a little bit of what that is i mean is it it's on another distribution methodology is i haven't seen a really great explanation of exactly why it should be why it has any advantages over what we have currently to me it seems like someone's doesn't like i think down to two groups one that things are s too old because they came into the space after our assassin they have this belief that they can do something better than what was already there to the people just don't understand the value of us in the democratisation and in in the privacy that comes with our assess our assesses is we talked about unless shows great equalizer if you didn't hang around to the end of the show let's show you missed thirty less thirty minutes was worth the describe go back to it and scrub all the way to hour and a half and then listen it's we've gone through this before it's too there was a time in this industry when when the the whole vitor thing was talked about as a as an alternative distribution method for podcasts that never really direction lorded lipson supported bittorrent in the early days yeah we.

"Well oh when nobility dishes event was in nashville right so issues nashville next year will be anaheim so end of march next year in joe this year i didn't go this year so i will say this the event organizer understood the ramifications i think they got lots of feedback from florida i'll say that lately and so i think they've learned their lesson there so hopefully in the hind though not have a repeat of florida and be more in line with the the traffic the traffic patterns of nashville a rob did you get a sense that the leadership of the national religious broadcasters was more and more supportive of podcasting on the content side oh no not at all not at all okay i i mean i've tried to talk to them about doing sessions and have a have a track of podcasting and it completely been built blown off every year including this past year i mean i've had i've i've i've tried to beg them plead them embarrassed them nothing i i it's still a bunch of radio yeah he's still a bunch of old radio folks and if you don't have a call symbol they just look you know they they look down their their nose now part of that i'll say this part of the reason they don't like podcasting some of them there don't like podcasting is it hurts the bottom line a lot of these radio stations they sell airtime to the preachers and when preacher can go out and just have a podcast and get a bigger audience don't either radio station so some of them podcasting isn't just looked at as a threat it is a real legitimate threat it is i mean i had people coming up to me telling me how much they're paying to be on the air and i'm like you insane and like well i'm like how many people you got what i think we get this reaching here's how much we cost what that's it.

"One and a pledge of forty dollars which is quite a burden in my opinion will get you a pair of those tickets so getting back to uh to your film allen i was wondering if in the process of making this movie your thoughts and and your beliefs about wolves changed much that a really good question an interesting not many people actually asked that question uh for me i look like all have always been an interesting thing for me i've always been around coyote and i've never had issued a coyote but wall kind of make me nervous at the beginning when i started this project i wasn't really quite one hundred percent sure about how the sean work getting into the wild and being in the areas where walls are and um are you a volunteer that bility you could see how it will react to each other and there was one particular that was out output male that had been captured from a wild that had deputies stock so it become what they called rob walsh they removed it it was a very aggressive wall and not because all but it because he was trapped chevy he did what it will give it is natural behaviors that we want it though whenever we would coveted heat we very aggressive so i have midway rich or being that way but when i started the film it changed that perspective i was able to work with them here on a little bit here and there and but thing i wanted to do it you're out a person i learned that pretty quickly when you open up a kid but it out and it's gone it both the opposite side of the and colder nothing to do with you uh and the while it looked back white what in the world did it me when you're putting on a caller and they hurt the oil grade of a pretty remarkable and for me they added experience a wild as well where we were filming at your roof hold one of the pact and they all started howling all around us and you know issued at him that they should on the back your neck that same time they would probably one of the more things i've heard um and i realized there the all round but they didn't do a thing they just for that each other or they were at where we work.

"And that's it i don't know that we've ever done a friday episode of market foolery before so hopefully hopefully this one worked and and if not apologize and and we promised not to do it again as always people and program ev interests in the stocks they talk about although we didn't really talk about stocks although here is one here is one 'cause i was thinking about this when i was thinking about the podcast industry and how when we think about different industries that are sort of nascent there are businesses usually the big tech companies that have a foot in in the door or they they've planted a flag of that industry and then you've got the pureplays and i was thinking to myself as i was heading to the podcast movement conference i don't think there are any pureplay podcast companies that are publicly traded and as it turns out there is one and i'm a little ashamed to say that i didn't know this because it's the company that we've worked with since two thousand nine it's a company called lipson a small company l i think the 'tigers l s y n lipson l i ib sy in and i'm pretty sure the 'tigers l sy and but they've been our audio vendor they've been the company that makes all the tech work we work with them since two thousand nine and i got a chance to to chat briefly with rob walsh choose the guy who runs lips and i've talked to rob over the years i'd never met him in person so it was it was great to catch up with him anyway so there you go that one stock talked about uh and the motley four may have formal recommendations for against they don't buy or sell stocks based solely on what you're here at is going to do for this additional market forty two shows mix by hardworking austin morgan i'm chris cell thanks for listening and see on monday.
