"Over some of the names here, you've got blunt Boseman, capito Collins, corn and cotton, so by the way, senator Tom cotton, can I tell you what this guy right here, he says he's a conservative. He's not, he's a rhino. You can't trust him. The man is not trustworthy. And it's really sad to say that about a fellow Republican, but this guy is not trustworthy. You've got senator grassley, Lindsey Graham, another one. You've got all you folks in Mississippi, both your senators. Voted for this nonsense. Hyde Smith and wicker, Mitch McConnell, Jerry Moran, Lisa Murkowski, rob Portman Mitt Romney. Senator rounds, Rubio, Shelby, thune, even topper film. Well, you can't trust tuberville. You know, he used to go down it while I don't want to get into the SEC. It's a situation, but you never came really trust those guys. So these people, you need to be bombarding them. I don't even care. You may not even live in Alabama. It doesn't matter. You call them. And we need to be demanding answers here. We need to be demanding to know why they betrayed the voters. And we also have to hope and pray that at the end of the day, somebody is going to come to their senses and the Democrats are not going to get the ten Republican votes they need in the Senate to pass this. Rob Portman is everything that's wrong with his bill, rob Portman is everything that's wrong with the attack on the First Amendment. Rob Portman is everything that's wrong with the United States Senate as a whole, I think. Anybody who makes a pledge and a promise to constituents in return for their votes. Anybody who says he believes in traditional marriage between one man and one woman. Anybody who says I will govern and I will make votes in the United States Senate along those beliefs. Who then turns around and flips it upside down 180° because his kid tells him he's gay. If someone that has no business being in government, thankfully rob Portman is on his way out of government. He chose not to run for reelection, JD Vance is going to be our next senator in his seat. And I look forward to much, much better from JD Vance and I got from rob Portman. Rob Portman proved to be selfish. He put his families, concern above that of the constitution, and while I understand that as a father, I do. He didn't take an oath to his son, he took an oath to uphold the constitution. And the constitution includes the Bill of Rights, it includes the First Amendment that are going to be shredded. As I said in my earlier program this morning, what he and the other 11 Republican turn coach did is they took the Bill of Rights, they took the constitution on its beautiful sacred parchment and put it through a paper shredder, then put that paper shredded through a bigger paper shredder, then set that paper shredder on fire. It's never coming back. Do you understand that? That's what this bill does. Portman issued a statement today that read in part. The Supreme Court acknowledged same sex marriage as a constitutional right in 2015, and current state law, our current law allows states and the federal government to refuse to recognize valid same sex marriages, no it doesn't. No states have challenged any same sex marriage since 2015 when the Supreme Court made that ruling. This is completely unnecessary and he knows it. He went on to say the respect for marriage act, which has already passed the House with bipartisan support simply guarantees that a valid same sex marriage from one state will be recognized by the federal government and other states. It ensures that valid marriages between two individuals. And by the way, it does not. It does not, because it doesn't say one and one. It doesn't say two individuals. It just says in the respect for marriage act. Same sex marriage and interracial marriage. And again, they threw the interracial part in their jaws to be able to call people racists if they opposed the same sex marriage bill. But it does not specify the number, which is why doma, which has now been repealed by essentially by this new bill and about to be a law. Doma was very specific. One man one woman, not two women, one man, a one man, or any other combinations, one on one. Throughout this process, Portman says, I also listened to the concerns raised by religious organizations. Really? And worked with my colleagues, colleagues to strengthen the religious liberty protections in the Bill, while still preserving the rights of same sex married couples. No, you didn't. A group of constitutional scholars who specialize in religious liberty have analyzed the bill and concluded that it does not pose new litigation risks to faith based groups. What Portman is trying to dance around here, hoping that people are too stupid to look into the reality of the situation. Is that he's trying to say that because religious institutions churches synagogues, mosques or whatever. Don't have to perform the actual same sex ceremonies. That means religion and religious liberty have been protected. That's what he wants you to think. But again, he's counting on you being stupid because that is not all that needs to be covered when you talk about religious liberty. You have to talk about the individual separate and apart from the institution of a church or a synagogue or whatever. You have to talk about the individual's right because of their own faith or even without their faith their own conscience that says, no, I can't do this. I don't believe in this. Which is exactly what free speech and freedom of religion give us. So he's trying to argue that this bill protects people's religious freedom, he's lying. And so is every other one of the other 11 turncoat Republicans who turn their back on their constituents and on the constitution and this has nothing to do with same sex marriage. This is not commentary nor criticism of same sex marriage which I can have my opinion on if I want. This is not about that because what was done last night and what is being done when Biden signs this is the end of the First Amendment, and that's something that affects all of us will be right back..

"Have a list. This is a freshly updated list of Republican senators who are supporting this, and all of these folks, by the way, were just like Barack Obama and one of them in particular was staunchly opposed to same sex marriage. That would be Mitt Romney of Utah, who now supports the bill, also Tom tillis of North Carolina, rob Portman of Ohio and Susan Collins of Maine, a Lisa Murkowski is hinting that she will support this along with senators, let's see here. Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa, telling Business Insider that she was keeping an open mind about the bill. So you could have more Republican senators joining the Democrats pastor. Yes, that's a concern. And I always, as a pastor, I always ask myself, what's the faith base of the individual making that vote, what's going on at their home church? Because it usually influences them. And then the second thing is who are their donors. And there's a lot of money that comes from this crowd. What they're all saying is that this was passed at the Supreme Court level. We're just agreeing with the Supreme Court. But that's not exactly as I understand it true. This is an opportunity for them to be what our founders intended. It checks and balances in how far this law is codified and how much of a nuisance it becomes to the faith community. And so at the very least, they need to consider language in the in this that excludes religious organizations and I've yet to hear about that. Well,

"Couple of times already, we've mentioned the midterms of Matt Boyle. Here's my big question for you as somebody who knows the swamp better than anyone else who's been following and writing about the politics here for years and years and years. Exciting. Lots of, I mean, what is it? The president Trump is a what a 150 to 9 record of interest. Some absurd best efforts. Best ever times like a thousand. So exciting. Maga candidates, American first candidates crushing it. But here's my big, so what? Okay, they can win. They can come into the house coming to the Senate going to state legislatures. But without a change in leadership, because Matt Gaetz isn't going to be the Speaker of the House, right? We're not going to have a maga leader of the Senate. So it kind of grinds to a halt often November or can America first with president Trump coming around the corner for 2024. Can maga success be reflected actually in Congress? What's your prediction? I think that it's going to very much be reflected in Congress. And so look, this is a long battle that we've been engaged in. So yes, we shocked the world when president Trump won The White House in 2016. But the Republican Party hadn't fully changed yet. It was starting to happen a little bit, right? Some of these good guys were winning primaries in 2012 and 2020. There's very early. So this is played out over the course of the last several elections since then. So now it's happened faster in the house than it has in the Senate. And that's just because House elections are every two years. Senator elections are every 6 years. But look at the Senate picture. Look at these new guys that are coming in to the U.S. Senate. JD Vance is much different than rob Portman. Okay. Ted bud, much different than Richard burr. Eric Schmidt and Missouri, much different than Roy blunt, who's leaving. So in the same goes across the board around the country. So it's each election you want to move the overton window and move things just a little bit more. The right direction and take as much ground as he can in a little bit more than that. We've been seeing that happen in the house. So yes, as Matt Gaetz is going to be the speaker. No, Matt Gaetz is not going to be the Speaker of the House. The speaker is going to be Kevin McCarthy.

What JD Vance's Win of the GOP Nomination in Ohio Means For the US
"I mean, this is just amazing. What we saw happening out in Ohio because JD Vance, wow, he just climbed in the polls. In the last couple of weeks, interestingly, after Donald Trump endorsed him. He did win the day out there in Ohio. He now advances to the big race in November. He's running against senator rob. Well, he's running against center Tim congressman. Tim Ryan, I should say, this is for senator rob Portman's seat, rob Portman, of course, is retiring getting out of politics. And this will be an interesting one because what I love about Ohio voters is that they really are just kind of salt of the earth and they're interested in a lot of the same things that frankly I think you and I are interested in from a policy perspective. And so it will be extremely interesting to watch. I should point out that Tim Ryan, he has a history of being pretty tough on China. He is a history for standing up for the American people on the jobs front. He's very anti inflation. I mean, he's got a lot of values that are somewhat aligned with a lot of the conservative values, not all of them, for sure. Not all of them. But that's why it's going to be so interesting because he's not an AOC type. He's not a Bernie Sanders type is not Elizabeth Warren type. He kind of didn't fit in entirely perfectly to the Democrat party. So now he's running against somebody who is really the antithesis of everything that the Democrats stand for. And that'll be a very interesting barometer to see where that heads for us as a nation. Don't forget, this Vance victory is seen as a Trump victory because Trump endorsed him and it really could spell some pretty good news for Trump endorsed candidates. "So I want to get into a story here that broke late last night. The United States Senate has approved the $1.5 trillion spending bill that expands the power of the IRS and dramatically increases the size and scope of government last evening, but also it sends $13.6 billion to Ukraine. We're going to get into that. Now Senate Republicans voted for this 18 of them voted for it. Senator barrasso from Wyoming, Roy blunt from Missouri. Shelley Moore capito from West Virginia, Susan Collins from Maine, John cornyn from Texas, Joni Ernst from Iowa, Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, chuck grassley from Iowa. Kathy Hyde Smith from Mississippi, Mitch McConnell from Kentucky. Senator Moran from Kansas, Lisa Murkowski from Alaska, rob Portman from Ohio, senator Shelby from Alabama, John thune from South Dakota, Tommy tuberville from Alabama, a senator wicker from Mississippi and senator young from Indiana. Approved Nancy Pelosi's $1.5 trillion omnibus bill. What good are Republicans when we have Republicans doing the work of Democrats? So I want to focus on one part of this, which of course is us spending $13.6 billion to Ukraine. Now, I'm not going to get into whether or not we should send the money. I've already made my position clear on that. I'm going to ask a couple of questions about this. How about leaders thought this through? What does success look like with this sort of funding appropriation? What is an acceptable result? So a rational way of going about spending money, any person that we have here at NRB would ask the question before you spend $13.6 billion before you embark on a mission, you just have to say if it's the right or wrong thing to do, but also weigh the reality of pulling off that task. And the track record associated with the entity or the organization proposing it. So I have a question for all of our listeners that support sending money to Ukraine. Do you have trust in the CIA? Does mark milley and Lloyd Austin give you confidence? Because that's who we just funded. Does giving foreign aid to other countries give you confidence or does it give you skepticism? So just to be clear, these Republicans and a lot of people that are pushing for sending a to Ukraine. And it might be the right choice, by the way. I have said I don't believe it is. "Checking out that race as well. Now, Rick Scott and the national Republican senatorial committee got good news over the weekend senator Scott wanted Ron Johnson to win in Wisconsin. He's going to. And Ron Johnson works hard. He's a very hardworking candidate. I've had my disagreements with him, but he is a retail politician extraordinaire. "State senator Matt Dolan of the great state of Ohio joins us by Zoom this morning. Good morning, senator Dolan. How are you? Good morning, you. How are you? You did a great job on Sunday Night. Thank you. That was a lot of fun. And I thought it was astonishing we had 1500 people, most of whom paid for their tickets. And it was civil. It was subset of have you had debates like that before and your political career? Yeah, so I mean, first of all, you set the tone by asking substitution so it required us as candidates to reveal what we know and what our vision is for Ohio and the USS. So that helped greatly. Yeah, as you move closer to election day, they've become more debates where you where you counter your opponents. But I think this time with so many people in the race just to outlining what our visions are and what my vision is. What people wanted to hear. They didn't want to hear scribbling while playing. They wanted to hear stuff. Now Matt told there are 6 candidates they're all well funded. They all have experience. I wrote about this for The Washington Post this weekend. And my weekly column. And I described you as in the rob Portman lane. I'm curious if you think that's a fair description and if you welcomed it. I don't know if you've read the column or not, but I tried to accurately portray how people are approaching a crowded field. So I think I read the article that was good article. I would argue though that I am in my own lane and maybe my reflect rob Portman, but there's no one else that has been singularly focused on the issues that impact Ohio more than me. And so there are facts that distinguish me. I'm the only one who are the infrastructure Bill, which brings tremendous relief in investments in Ohio, which is great for Ohio businesses. And the only one in this race that is an elected official and has positive conservative experience and results that I can bring to Washington and reproduce the same thing. So I think I'm uniquely qualified and I have my own lane in this race. And everyone else is in the early.

"Republicans could get 60 votes again because it hasn't really gone over well. I think McConnell did it as a tactic, but I don't know if it survives this time around. Well, here's the interesting. Well, a few things. I don't know if it would get 60 again. And it's going to need some technical correction. It's going to need to go back. In one way, shape or form. But in the form of a technical corrections package, which would change them, we should write about this, but which would change some dates and some other things because this was passed so long ago. Don't know if it would get 60. It might just get folded into the reconciliation bill to be honest with you. I'm not sure if they could do that. Then it only needs 50. That's why that's important. Yeah, listen, cinema mansion are playing this very close to the best. We wrote last week. The White House is focusing on Manchin. They see him as a more an easier broker on this stuff. And then they're just going to put a world of pressure on cinema to come on board. That's their theory of the case. I think that Manchin will get there. I mean, Manchin, think about how much he's dragged this package in his direction. He dragged it from three and a half to one and a half to two. You've gotten rid of tax increases. And every single senator could control the contours of this package. Let me go back to the signal we got last night. 5 of 6 well funded Republican Senate candidates said no to the infrastructure side of it. And these are so their campaigning on rob Portman made a mistake. State senator Matt Dolan whose chair of appropriations for infrastructure in Ohio is in favor of this because I visited the roads in the bridges. He's like rob Portman, center right. And so if the Republican Party has moved away from the compromise forged by rob Portman and Mitch McConnell, can you imagine where they are now? And if Glenn young wins won't House Democrats say, oh my gosh. What's going on in the countryside? Especially because Terry McCullough is campaigning on Biden's agenda. You know what I mean? That is the especially interesting thing. I don't make much to be honest. I hear your point on the Republicans campaigning against infrastructure. But I do think it's easy to say that on the campaign trail, it's easy to be no government's not popular and government has done this. "Yeah, David drucker, I am going to moderate a debate of would be senators in ohioans on a night, the 6 Republicans who are running three nights at Senate to replace rob Portman, and I'm reading in Trump shattered or prepare for that debate. They might want to get a hold of a copy themselves if they want to know what I'm thinking about. I think you're going to sell like hotcakes. I can not wait to read this, but I wanted to ask you, I know that two of the profiles in the book are of Robert O'Brien and Mike Pompeo. I was with both of those men last week. I'm curious what your assessment of both of their intentions and odds are showed president Trump not enter the race. And if he should. Well, it's very interesting. Let me start with Mike Pompeo, the former Secretary of State because I spent so much time researching him and reporting on it. He wants to run for president. And in fact, in a podcast interview a couple of weeks ago and it's a companion to my book, so it's also athlete titled in Trump's shadow. I asked secretary Pompeo, if I said I know you're not going to tell me if you're running or not today, I'm not that I'm not that crazy. But I said, if Trump decides to run a third time, does that automatically mean you will not. And he would not say as some have said that that automatically means he would not. He said, look, if you're going to run for president, you need to believe that you have something unique and critical to offer the country at a time in history. He is planning to run and everything he is doing is about planning to run. Robert O'Brien, who I profile less, but did mention is a very interesting figure because he comes from the traditional wing of the party, but he fit in very well with Trump in The White House and was his most successful national security adviser from the perspective of doing the job and not getting crosswise with the commander in chief. Could be a very interesting dark horse candidate as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. He's a Mormon. He comes from the west. There are pockets of Mormon voters in Arizona and Nevada, Idaho, other states where multi candidate primary, you might be able to do some damage. He's also interested in running. I classify him as less interested in Pompeo.

They're still trying to find out why. To my knowledge they have not found out why. But it's an issue. It's a massive issue. Free speech the ability to communicate the ability to use modern tack. Everyone else's using modern tack in campaigning. All of that now is up in the air.

"In space or cyber up next. There were celebrations across the country yesterday. Marking juneteenth now federal holiday when we come back how the belated recognition of june us. As much about our future we are back. It's data download time this time. We are marking a new federal holiday. It's the first time federal holiday has been added to the calendar over thirty five years but before juneteenth was a federal holiday it was a state holiday almost everywhere but that didn't happen overnight. We show you the journey of juneteenth in the states. It began of course in texas in nineteen eighty of course texas was the first state to acknowledge juneteenth. Which of course is their knowledge. Meant that they were the last state. Essentially do acknowledge immense a patient and then by nineteen ninety nine three other states were added minnesota oklahoma and florida. It was really in the first decade of this century that momentum for juneteenth really took off thirty plus states added it from two thousand to two thousand nine and in fact by the time congress voted on it every state but to had june eighteenth as a state. Just south dakota in hawaii Didn't have it as a state holiday. North dakota was the most recent state to add it in april. What's interesting here is just sort of where public opinion has been on this overall. Just thirty five percent of adults say that juneteenth should be a federal holiday. But don't mistake that freight lack of support. It's more of a lack of knowledge about it because forty percent said they didn't know in public opinion. That tells you. There is a bit of a knowledge gap on the issue overall. What's interesting on this knowledge. Gap is how much it is by age. A real generational. Divide as you can see here. Among younger folks. A majority believed juneteenth should have been a federal holiday. Older folks scott the less. They thought juneteenth to do that. And this plays out in other issues involving racial justice. For instance reparations. The idea that descendants of slaves should be compensated. Well support for it. There's still a majority that. Do not support reparations. But check out this generational divide forty-two percent among eighteen to thirty four believe That yes there should be some reparations and you will see the older. The responded gets the less support there is for it. But what does this tell you. June eighteen is not the end of something when it comes to marketing racial inequality in this country. It may be the beginning of new conversation. Because as this younger generation gets older the discussion of racial justice inequality is only going to become more central. So keep an eye on when we come back. Mike pence it's heckled at a christian conservative conference. Everyone wants to get the vaccinations rolled out in a timely manner because you can put as much aid as you want to the economy. But until we stop the pandemic, it's going to be just plugging an endless whole. Meanwhile, President Biden has come out and complained that the vaccine program is in worse shape than we anticipated or expected. What are the specific steps on a structural level that he's taking to try to either organizes federally, create more consistency and get this schedule ramped up? So, but it is trying to work on right now is making sure that there are testing sites across the United States. He's working with a number of private companies on this, making sure that local drugstores your CBS is your Walmarts or Walgreens are going to be able to have the ability to provide Americans those vaccines. They're also trying to make sure that states have a good idea how many vaccination doses that they'll be able to get. That way. They can better plan for how to give them out and how to distribute them. Make sure that there are fewer wasted doses. I mean, the big bottom line here is that under the Trump administration, vaccine distribution was very much handled at the state and local level, And now Biden is trying to bring that up to the federal level and sort of have more of the federal government playing a role in vaccine distribution. But there are some Republicans that I anticipate making the move to join the Democrats. What do you think? Well, if I had to put a number on it right now, and you, said John, what's the number going to be? I'd say seven Republican senators, among them two Republican senators, actually three Republican senators. Who are not running for re election. Richard Burr of North Carolina, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, and yesterday another Republican senator, also announced that he's not running for re election. That's Rob Portman of Ohio. And that means they don't have to worry about the political consequences of voting to convict President Trump. They don't have to worry about being primary Esso. I would include them, along with some moderate Republican senators, Susan Collins Just one a full six year term in the U. S. Senate.
