"If for some however that happens right and it might happen. I can tell you that. I've been you know harsh word time with with some of my these than i had only limited check myself. Why don't we come back to this when both of us have had some time right so that is actually going to be productive. That's what that's kind of. Where i got from that one and i agree that you shouldn't be arguing loudly and carnegie even as a step-by-step how to defuse an argument or diffuse disagreement section and i did like how this was written whether it was an update from dorothy whether it was you know in the original the original work really that idea of disagreements or something that we should welcome and the context of a disagreement is somebody cares so much about whatever it is discussing that they want to share a thought or they have a different opinion that they think is relevant to doing the best. We all camp and it's really hard when you learn to make that the context you know like i. I'm never going to get mad. You when you're on the show. And you and i disagree because i know you're not doing it because you're like i came on the show because i hate that rob perry character and i'm gonna teach them you come on the show because you want to improve the field of behavior analysis. You want to help us improve show so any disagreement. We have is in a context of growth and learning and i always found that exciting. So it's really hard to think of ever getting upset about it. Because that is part of the disagreement. It's meant to improve the situation. And i think the more fluid we get in accepting that most disagreements are going to be from that context and we have something to learn from it because again we're following maybe some of the other principals or we're just appreciating the other people that were interacting with easier is to avoid arguments turning into enmity and having them turn into really meaningful discussions about. What are some things that i was not taking into account from my perspective and i'm glad i have that maybe it won't change my mind. Maybe it won't change the total outcome but at least i'm thinking of things in a way that i wasn't before and that can only help you know i can't think of a situation where learning more actually made the situation worse now and i think that's important number ten for carnegie is the appeal to nobler motives again. I this something. I'm working on thinking about when we first talked about this book. Yes you reacted very reasonably and kind of like. I had never even thought about that. I was heated late. We're tired we are now and i. I needed time. Justice or jackie was saying to go away from that come back and even if i didn't have a sense that you were upset about that interaction if i always approached you that way you would wear like some. Yeah my guest spot on on the podcast would disappear. Because it's important that. I recognize that i was being very intense. And that you weren't trying to be aggressive about recommending a book that i hate but that yeah no no no. Yeah but it could seem personal especially again. The relationship is we've had enough opportunity. This is a low rate low stakes environment doing thinking about working with clients with a lot of needs man. Things can clash real easily and thinking about like where parents. If i'm upset about something i'm probably not going to be giving them credit for trying their best or those apparent supervisor client even that i can't make them stop behaving that way by being angry about it I need to find a way to change my behavior to improve the situation for us all. Because i cannot control my behavior and to like again that goes back to appealing dover motives and and avoiding argument can you know sometimes argumentation. I think you could argue all day long and be fine. I've supervisors that were two other. People have so much to just knowing. What's the appropriate way to communicate what needs to be forgiven because it was a step too far but it doesn't have to be addressed that kind of thing so i mean that covers. A lot of the principles here Again you know. I think some of the other person do great joel. The talking i liked principle seven in terms of let the other feel that the idea is his or hers. I this is more one that this could be misused. I think if you don't have a high level of expertise with supervisions because it's not so much conning the person or trying to get them to be seem rolled by the privilege you have as their supervisor or as the knowledgeable therapist it really is more having listened enough having problems old enough that your level of expertise as someone who's done this for a while just makes enough sense to the person. There's a better chance of they did. They might take your advice. It doesn't mean that they have to take your advice or they're forced to take your advice or even if they shouldn't take your advice necessarily but that the person feels that what you gave them was information in a friendly empathetic way with an understanding of where they're coming from that whatever idea is the is the eventual idea that gets chosen. They feel they were a key part of it. And if you're lucky your education and all your knowledge was helpful to them to the point that they want to do what you have to say because it is nice when people listen what we have to say doesn't mean that we always have the right answer necessarily but if we think about this. Is you know interpreting this this situations that we are more likely to be in our relationships with our trainees supervise eases one of learning opportunities them and i think that this particular principle and translate really nicely to that right. Because i've done this a lot before is usually okay. We have this situation with his client. We want to figure out how to best address it so you know. Maybe i as supervisor have an idea what i would probably do right. But it's not nearly as helpful for my supervisor for me to just tell them what to do. What's helpful is for us to walk through the whole thing together and think about what our actions are a b. I present them with a few options. Aba steer them towards you know towards what i'm thinking and then at some point there's gonna be equally good options right that i don't know which one's gonna work tonight. Say now you. You helped me decide what we're going to do next right and together we come up with the next piece of what that behavior plan or or whatever it is gonna look like they've contributed they're going to be invested and they're going to be interested to see if this worked out the way that we were anticipating painting wood and the the difference between just doing what someone tells you to and being involved in the planning of the process as far as what you learn from that scenarios kuechly different so it's not just like oh let me make make them think that it's their idea but they're involved in the decision making and it was our idea together is going to teach him so much more of a how to actually be in that clinical position soon.
