"You are the ones that's GonNa make a difference is the Grison Rob. Dj tixx showing off on the ones and the twos man. Alex is tight man. That's right right route. Brian was on the uninterrupted. One of their podcast. Whatever you WANNA call one of their outlets. They knew so much and he said he said a lot of things. I think all week. We're going to have some Lebron content because he said a lot but one of the things he said that was really revealing. Was that in two thousand eleven during the NBA lockout. So this was Lebron second year with the Miami Heat after they had lost to Detroit are to Dallas in the finals remember. He doesn't have a championship at that point and he said that he didn't know how long the lockout was going to end so he actually started training to play in the. Nfl started running time in his forty yard. Dash started putting more on the bench. Press trying to get his body ready for football. What do you think about that? Do you think the Brian could've played in the NFL? Or what are your thoughts? I think the story is total. It's another example of copying space jam. Michael Jordan went to baseball. So He's put out some narrative. I don't believe that so you think he's a straight up lying. I just that he was going to the NFL. Did he contact? Somebody was there. Dallas no Freeman contract not talking about Jerry anymore. We have at that point Jerry Jones. According to Maverick Carter he has the contract. That Jerry Jones Sit Lebron. I just don't believe that Lebron honestly took going to the NFL. At that point in his career he hadn't achieved anything yet in the NBA. I just I. I find that story to be hard to believe. Yeah I I mean. I'm not going to sit here. And say was lying through his teeth. Obviously as you said he hadn't won the NBA now. And I don't think he was saying I don't think I mean maybe was. I don't think he was saying I was done with basketball. I think he was thinking look. I'll play maybe a year or play. You know until the lockouts over you know you could theoretically he could have played that fall and you know been back for the season in January. But here's what I'll say. I do think that had he chosen football over basketball. He could have made the NFL. And I think would have been an all time great receiver. He was all state as a junior in Ohio which is a football state and I covered his school. And that was a football powerhouse. Saint Vincent Saint Mary he had. I mean we never seen a receiver that big even even Taller Hero Carmichael but I think he would have been a souped up version of Jimmy Graham with more speed and all that but at that point I don't think he could have gone straight in twenty eleven after eight or nine nine or ten years off and made an impact I think but I think had he said I'm done with basketball and I'm concentrating. No football I think he could have been a couple years. Become a really good football player. I just don't see it. I just just lay a football or see the whole scenario at this. Think it's so convenient the whole Michael Jordan dock and baseball. Just just Y. This is the conversation you're having now I just it just it just it just feels like it's contrived Chris that's just me. I don't have any proof. I don't know what was in his head. "So jumping back. The the big question finally gets asked by Liz. And I think it's one of the most pivotal points in the movie is when she says why. Do you even want to get back together with her? So Badly Ryan he has no answer and they gotta cut it at the right time and that's when it all comes into full view as a viewer that like is her or is it his ego that has been wounded and is is it. Just that is it just about saving face as it just about like recovering something that was taken from him so that he can feel like he's back in control or that you know he's he's kind of righted a wrong or something but ultimately is a question of him actually wanting to be in that relationship or not. That's something that he has to figure out and ultimately he realizes yes. I do like I want to turn this corner. I want to kind of move on to a different phase of life where I'm not just preoccupied. Twenty four hours of the day with like breakup XS. And what's wrong with me? And what is no unlike me and all that stuff? Yeah and that that line that serves this sort of the the second plot point which spins us into the third act because that's when he finally starts to explore a little bit about what he loved about her not just how being with her made him feel Sort of the first time. He's not completely superficial and shallow. It's the first little peek that you're actually going to get a character arc which is much later in movies than usual. I think sure yeah. You're you're kind of you're trusting that the viewer is going to stick with the character long enough to finally come around and have some some some change some developments some insight which is which is interesting. It's not so much a three act like hero's journey kind of thing he kind of all the insight happens right there at the end kind of have this has this like Eureka. Moment where clicks into place a little bit? Yeah they have that great scene with When she is in his apartment when he gets home and she's reading the top five jobs dream jobs which are hysterical. They're so specific and so like not just. I want to write for rolling stone. I WANNA write for rolling stone for these three years during a certain time period which is well in the path which is basically you know. He's he's made like three of his five dream. Jobs are impossible will never happen. You know what you don't WanNa be King of France exactly exactly. It's it's it's very funny because it just shows the kind of I don't know self sabotaging self defeating behavior of a certain kind of personality that he would define his goals as things that are just on their face. Never going to be achievable. Says everything about him. Yeah yeah that he's never I don't know I mean it's like he says at one point I think It was easier in a way to to not try because two tries to risk failure and so by by not trying and by just kind of lake persisting in this purgatory state the sort of inbetween limbo he was quote unquote keeping his options open. But that's nothing. Yes that's not living a life basically. Yeah he's a guy who lives in a fantasy world You know he's the fantasy of these women the fantasy of these jobs instead of the reality which she rocks him into which is and she says so she's like what about record store owner like. Yeah you kind of have a dream job. And then you know it sets up that great that that final sort of redemption that he decides to put something into the world he invents this record label sort of on the spot right which is out of character for him to put himself out there like that and That the way they organize it all. That's right before the funeral stuff Which is interesting because he kind of has that redemptive moment than they spend that right into the funeral when he sleeps with her in the car. Yeah I I'd like to. I wonder if there were alternate versions where things were sort of. 'cause you rearrange this movie a little bit ocean still have it be tell the same story and be successful. Yeah that that is a very interesting question whether there was any restructuring in the edit because like you said you. Could you could kind of piece this puzzle together quite differently. If you wanted to with a little bit of voiceover rewrite three shoots whatever you could you could completely change the structure so I wonder how much of that was there in the script and how much of that was found You know in in the process of cutting the film together but I. I would not be surprised if you know some pieces here and there are moved around. Yeah I think more so than other films. It has a little bit of flexibility with how you could structure. It is very non linear and you know he can. He can kinda jump forward and back in time and we can even revisit something that we've already seen earlier in the film where he gives us more information about something. It's very very interesting. I mean the film is like one one thing I did. I did pick up on watching some of the extras for this. They talked about how in the initial few drafts of the screenplay all the stuff that was direct address was just written his veto right. He didn't do it. I don't think right right right. And so you know pretty quickly they. They came around to the idea that no actually we should probably do direct address because these are some compelling moments in the film in terms of what he's actually saying there's a lot of into fourth and there's so much of it yeah like what would you do. What would you even show like him? Just record store and some vio or something. It just wouldn't feel right so because the movie in a way I mean it's it's very much from his perspective. It's all coming from his head you know. It's the way he thinks so he sees the world is the way he organizes events so you have to have his his sort of you have to have his character. Basically in control of the movie for it to work I think yeah in the fourth wall thing is It's such a tough thing to pull off well and it's been done Certainly been done before Ferris bueller comes to mind Ryan other films That the heavily used it Right this this may use it more heavily than any movie. Maybe Alfie which also worked. Well I think right right but It's a tough thing to pull off and I get. Why Kusak is I get wine? Actor period is is reticent to go there because it has done so seldomly So well is this but yet the into it. Yeah it's like it's like I mean it's it's the thing that we're taught to not do in screenwriting and filmmaking which is you know you don't just come out and tell the audience something you're supposed to show it in some way so if you just have the guy talking to camera and kind of explaining how he feels or what happened in his life or so on. There's a big risk that it's going to feel too literal or to just un-imaginative not dynamic but if you notice when when those scenes are happening they always like it's almost a sort of reality outside reality where for instance he's like walking around Chicago and you don't really get the sense that there's like a lot of life happening around him. It's kind of the streets are empty. It's almost a sort of dream state or something where you can tell your your more sort of within the realm of his mind a little bit than just a guy walking down the street or something and that kind of sets the tone and I mean I love the play where even within a scene things will happen. He kind of turns to camera and sort of you know adds another layer to it again. These are like you said these are things that we see in other works. But there's something about the way it's done here. Maybe it's something about the just the the the quality that Cusak has an actor as a presence on screen. Somebody that we want to root for that. We can relate to young man in a lot of ways. Yeah he's ever man. But he can also convey thoughtfulness and intelligence and related ability. And and all that in a way that I don't think most actors would would be able to achieve with the same material. Yeah it's interesting you were talking about the And this is what always happens with. The fourth wall is is were meant to believe that everything around him is suspended and you're addressing camera but They do something. I haven't really seen much in at the very end and I never noticed until today At the very end he's doing one of his monologues and Laura hears it and she says she references and she. I can't remember what the line was but she asks him she's like what did you say about something and it's sort of a very interesting little. Yeah he clever because they don't he doesn't look back at the screen and be like Wha Cheetahs here But it's interesting that they chose to do that at all I'm kind of wondering why it's really because they never. It's not like a payoff or anything. It's just a just a little nod or something. Maybe it means maybe it means that she can finally hear him red saying something about the care that he's he's let her in. Yeah maybe he's given her. I mean he now. Shares that that internal world with another person in a way whereas before it was something that he kind of kept to himself. Be Curious to three inch to hear about that. You know Cusak is is one of the three films. He's been road showing Last year past couple of years. He's gone on tour and Depending on what city you're in he'll do say anything high fidelity or Grosse Pointe Blank Sherman screen it and do a Q. and A. Afterward and Some of the movie crushers have been to these and they said it's a lot of fun to go to but it's Ab I love John Cusak as an actor but he's one of those that is has such a reputation outside of the industry as a jerk that it's hard for me to get past that now yeah But he's been in some of my favorite and he's played some of my favorite characters. Maybe maybe it's one of those things where he's able to kind of turn it on. Connect with the camera connects with an audience and that way and then you know if that is true about his personality outside of of movies. I mean it's one of those things. It's the craft of an actor to create this feeling of Frien- friendliness or familiarity. Or someone that you feel like you already know or that certainly you would want to know. Have you ever read any of this stuff about him now? Really know you know I do. I followed his twitter for a long time and he's he's very very active on their super political very liberal outspoken political. And but but I mean you know. My impression from from him online is that he's at least in the online forum. He's very like accessible in down to earth. And you know he's always replying to people and kind of like re tweeting stuff and I mean. He seems very conversational. Some people approach social media as more of like a one sided thing where they're just shooting stuff out like banking on their celebrity for people to see it or whatever and not really having a conversation but he seems to really engage with people even if he has his his perspective that he's not really deviating from let's say I Dunno in online. Anyway he doesn't he doesn't come off that way to me but I mean people come off differently online than they do in real life so that's not a big surprise. Yeah I mean it's up to you whether or not you want to go down this rabbit hole but if you there are some stories out there that are so crazy. You think like Kim this be true. Yeah Yeah like CR- talked about this on the show with no before crazy stuff like Being in a luxury box at a cubs game and like throwing wings at people that pissed him off in lake. Is this. Just Look John? Cusak crazy behavior. Yeah yeah there are a ton of them in there so many that you gotta think like this has got to be grounded in some truth here where there's smoke there's fire like everyone just got together and decided they wanted to ruin John Kiss. Yeah I mean there's there are those there are those people that the stories about whether the they're super difficult to work with or you know off camera there nightmare and so on. I don't know what to what to his work. So yeah you know it's with Cusak. I think even even looking at some of these behind the scenes interviews and stuff. There's there's a certain kind of I duNno prickliness to that. You can get just a sense of that. Would give me pause to like want to meet him and like yeah. Hang out in person or something. I would definitely be sort of a be careful what you wish for. Sorta thing maybe. Maybe it's better to just stick with the what what he's able to create on screen you know. Don't do it Casey. Then you get to the end of the film. That Great Record Release Party scene is just pure joy. Everyone gets their moment You Have Dick Ana you get this great Moment with With Rob Dj -ing in his element. He's just this thing Jack Black gets shine and he has that great voice. And everyone's just like I'm like you know rob is just like my God. He can actually do this. He actually has a two new tower. So it's really kind of a great way to end the film and the last thing you see is the only selfless act in the entire film from him is in the final sixty seconds when he is making that tape for Laura any says..

"Projectiles. So we're going to bring in DJ Robbie real name rob block on the streets. And we're going to talk to rob about his music and about his new life down in the Palm Springs area. And we're just going to catch up a little bit so DJ Robbie. Hey, man. Welcome to the paulie MAC podcast been. Fellas fellas. But good to hear voices. And I I'm happy invited me on the show here. It's it's great to talk to you. Hey, man. I gotta tell you would be surprised Robert how often your name comes up still on the Murphy MAC show because the cast of characters does change like Pat Connors, not on the show anymore. Kate Scotts and all of this show, obviously you left some time ago. So we've got a lot of new guys coming in some really talented people, but we do miss you. And that was when we look back on that like you and Kate and pads like the golden era dude of the Murph and MAC show giants repeal and off World Series life. Life was good back. Then to the new record is read. It's fantastic that my friend. Luke, we go back. Since the mid nineties, and we're actually bandmates in a band called bro ham that was like on Warner Brothers records. It was around the time. Limit is getting all that was happening. And it was kind of a a rock rap experiment that they tried. So I was like a hired gun, but I toured with them for three months and in the process, they gave us a bunch of equipment and Luke passed on a drum machine to me. Nice. And I remember when he was like, yeah. Just make me an album someday. So here it is have made I made him some beets. And we just kind of went back and forth over the past year. And we came up with about eight songs that we think are are pretty good. The record's real good. And I want to get into it a little bit deeper, but I want to go first before we go there, though, I wanna go back with them a little bit, Shannon. Because I think our audience might be interested to learn this that there was a time when when rob DJ Robbie did he did his his radio show on K USF radio kind of hip hop show. And ironically when rob would be ending his shift. Tony would become an into start like his jam band shell with our other Cambio, Mike power. So it's kind of just let people know rob like you actually have history not only with the Murph and MAC show in me, and Murph and everybody you also had a relationship with Tony. That was totally independent of kmby. Are you guys were doing your stuff over k USF talk about that like that because sadly K USF does not have that programming anymore? It's classical now, and it's it was a real blow to think anybody who likes independent music is listen to use of all the time not only for you guys. But just flip it on in the middle of the night. You might hear something cool but back then I mean. That was a pretty healthy tied for music in. This town must have been fun to do your own show with just free form, whatever you want. Yeah. Most definitely I mean K USA was one of the original Staples and the whole college radio seen. I mean REM talking heads Metallica came to the studios when it was just getting started. So when I went to school at USF, I'm like, I gotta you know, see what's going on here. Eventually got a show. We did a Sunday night. Hip hop show for twenty years me and j boogie and DJ wisdom, and you know, we had I mean you name it KRAS one gang Starr Eminem. Jay z. My god. Wow. Drastic five common all kinds of people before they blew up. And yeah happened. Tony did the show. Sunday nights were amazing because you had Tony doing his jam band show. And then I was our show and then something called some radio, which was like a techno show or her house music show afterwards. So it was it was pretty nice. I used to listen to you guys. And it was so it was a good night listening. It was nice way to wrap up the weekend. Rob let me ask you real quick to for you being a young kid like that. Well, there's two questions one when you were doing the K USF the early days student were you at that time already DJ -ing like scratching records and stuff where did that come later? No, I was totally into it. And how do we got the show is a cat named Billy jam who is you know, pretty famous journalists around the barrier. Route hip hop journalists. He did a rap show and he got kicked off the air for playing. I can't remember the record. But he played curse words. He played the whole thing. And so they kicked him off. And so j boogie was his like intern. And so we stood stepped up and got that gig. So. What we did was we just bringing in are brought in my turntables every week and we'd put on a live mix show, and it just grew from there. Hey, this is the paulie MAC podcast. We're talking to the former producer of the Murph and MAC show and a hip hop artists in zone right DJ Robbie he just has a new album out called born illness. It's fantastic gray record way. It's fantastic. So be you know, you're talking about all this classical beat making which it's obvious that you love Dray and all that kind of stuff from the beats ditch cops which is a song that the Pauline. I love has maybe the greatest chorus of all time smoke. I'll sing it. Like this goes we smoke hash day after day nonstop. I mean talking about by the way, I hear a little cypress hill in there. Yeah.
