Giannis, Milwaukee Bucks reach $228M supermax extension

"Another big deal has been signed in the nba with. Maybe it's best player. It's a debatable. Point but the greek freak is staying with milwaukee for at least five more years yiannis antenna kubo had until yesterday to sign the bucks super. Max extension offer a love. The supermax extension sounds so cool. I want the supermax. I would lie. I would like to have some time on my radio. Career kicked open the bosses door and not just demanded a race but a super max extension. Yeah exactly never really panned out. It's radio after all Anyway if he turned down he could become a free agent after the upcoming year. "Yourself as a player right now and obviously you've got a ways to go in your overall development near starting your career but right now. From your vantage point, what do you think are your strengths and your weaknesses right now? I think a lot of. witnesses just as like you know defensive schemes. Where to be on all the time on defense? You know locking and you know full time and then like I'm letting enough it'd be great defender. So. Lacking in on that the weakness was shooting but you know been Jim. Collapsed semi-monthly one of the all time. So you know getting that down pat and I think probably my my biggest strengths. Atomic, downhill. Really, got into the best. I. Think. The on the most athletic gardeners draft but I think I'm the fastest person. In. Maybe the NBA when I get there next year. So I, think those are my biggest. For you going into the draft do you think did? being a lead guard or the ball guard. You do you have a preference or have a vision of which role you think you could be more successful than I definitely I could be more successful. You know on the ball elite guard but you know honestly you know I got be more. You know for things to happen I feel like I run lane good I run lane lane. Good. I like I do think that transition well, and you know a good off ball cutter. So you know whatever the team really needs to. If you're sitting.

"What's up everybody Michael? Scotto hoops NBA writer, and host of the hoops hype podcast. Hope you're all doing well. I know it's getting a little chilly out now that we're into the fall but at least the NBA off season is about to heat up with the draft right around the corner. So what better time to have our next guest RJ? Hampton. Join US on the pod Rj one of the top high school recruits in class before going pro overseas and the NBL we talked about his journey playing overseas going up against Lamelo ball returning home to train with Mike. Miller. And Penny. Hardaway being a projected first round pick in this year's draft and much more coming up next. RJ. Comment on the Pie with the Sierra side, how are you doing a with everything going on with covert in the world right now and with training as you get ready for the NBA draft Right I appreciate your appreciate you having me like you said, it was. You Know Kinda scary thing eight nine months but you know luckily. We've been Kobe's free friends and people around me. So I'm just trying to stay stay healthy and as far as really just training just. Keep my mind short a long long long process. So just trying to keep my body right off of you know if you're ready to what the head. While hopefully that good fortune continues for you and your family. Certainly, there's a lack going on in the world. As we as we look at your arc to get to this NBA draft the first thing I wanted to ask you about was. Making that decision for yourself to to go overseas instead of playing ball and college for you personally. Obviously, that's a major life decision what went into that decision for you and what did you think of? The decision looking back on it now. You know I think the decision for me was the right decision as a basketball player I as a business person who I wanna be in the future. You know I definitely feel like there's a helped me on and off the court I don't know to be a pro to be NBA player, which is my main goal you know looking back on a decision you know our regret it one bit and I'm happy with outcome happy on how much I learned this past year. So it's just a really good. When you were making that decision did you talk with other.

Speculations increases that Cole Anthony might not play again in college

"So there's growing speculation that Kohl Anthony will not play at North Carolina again. Norrland not sure if you saw it. But here's what our friend and former colleague Sabatini wrote for the athletic earlier this week about Injured lottery picks is co Anthony. lamelo ball in Hampton after spending time in Las Vegas around dozens of NBA people sambo quote the feeling among NBA evaluators. Waiters is that injured guards. Coal Anthony Lamelo ball and RJ. Hampton aren't going to play the rest of the season. It's worth stressing that no final decisions have been made by those players. I and thus it's possible. They will still play scouts and executive. Don't know that Anthony won't suit up again for North Carolina or that Bala Hampton won't play again in the NBA. I'll rather it's. They're working expectation that they're not going to get to see them again. Given their contextual situations the using logic because North Carolina's team around Anthony has struggled with no uh-huh floor spacing and a cluttered lane around him every time he drives into the pain. NBA executives believe that does around. Anthony will stress to him that it's not worth returning that will be especially true if North Carolina loses a lot of games in his absence against a week schedule and this takes itself out of the tournament. Picture norlander do you. I think we've seen coal anthony for the final time in North Carolina uniform. I'll be direct and I'll say no but I had this thought think I expressed only previous podcast if UNC goes on to have significant issues in the ACC and can't even keep its head above water. Call Anthony Projects even with this injury. I won't say universally but a top five pick is completely mm within reality if he does not play again and it would not stunned me. It'd be it'd be a major development element in that you would have in the same season for what I have to believe. Is the first time ever in college. Basketball Ascot Ball to top five level picks in college for eligibility injury. Whatever opting to bail on their college careers to not return and pursue a pro opportunity trinity? which is the which is the? It's like the college bowl. College players sitting out the Bulls taken to to the sixth degree. Basically where it's one thing where if you've been a junior senior in college football you're playing some forgettable bowl on December twenty ninth ninth New Year's Eve or whatever and you're just like I'm Gonna I'm GonNa pack it in here. I'M NOT GONNA chance injury if I think I'm going to be first second or third round pick. It's completely understandable. Aw I would endorse any player that wants to do that. Frankly it's a whole nother level if you are a coal Anthony Type James Wiseman type and you you decide. I'm just GONNA shut it down altogether and simply not returned to competition and GonNa take the stock where I have it right now and hope that my April and May workouts are going to Either steady me or boost me to to a certain spot in the draft so I won't be stunned if it happens. I'm going to say that will not happen. Only because because he's a truly like fierce competitor. I think that he will be better. He'll we'll be back in time to still want to give it a go out that this is GonNa sit well with him having his career kind of sputter out the way that it has. So Oh he's he's nine games deep into a career. I think he'll be back. He'll be playing for Carolina this season and long-term projection is this and we can do a offer. Type flashback if we need to but I'll say that he'll return and one of the most compelling storylines in college basketball when he does return will be if he can be healthy enough and good enough to get an UNC into the tournament. I would lean that way as well. I do think there's two things that would make him less likely to to return or unlikely to return one would be if you just not healthy enough. And if he's not healthy enough. You shouldn't return. That's like you know like this. and He is worth millions of dollars and playing playing at anything. Less than one hundred percent would be foolish. So if he's not healthy enough to return then he won't return shouldn't return anybody trying to criticize him for that would be It'd be misguided criticism the other thing that I think could play a role as you mentioned ballgames for football players. Will you know they don't these football players. They don't sit the College Football playoff. They sit out the cotton bowl and they sit out the Birmingham Bowl and they sit out the liberty bowl but they don't sit out the the games that actually mean something something and so if you want to you know. Make perhaps apples to oranges comparison but still something similar still fruit to fruit I. If coin returns in North Carolina has just lost so much before. He's able to come back that he would be coming back not to try to get North Carolina to the tournament the try to get them to the nit like we're just crystal clear you're not. You're not taking this team to the tournament. At that point. You could go if I'm not playing playing for any. I'm not playing for a trip to the tournament. What am I playing for? Like if you're in Alabama running back and you're playing for a trip to the account coll- to the national championship game. That's worth playing for even if you're a top ten pick if you're just gonNa go to the fiesta. A A different bowl. Anything outside of the College Football playoff. Perhaps that's not worth playing for. I think coli Anthony's approach could be similar if if I can come if if this team is holds it together well enough that I can come back and we can beat Duke twice beat Louisville and go to the tournament. That's worth playing for but but coming back to just play out a schedule that's leading the nowhere because the image to the resume was so significant in my absence that we can't get to the tournament then. I think you could reasonably argue. It's time it's time to just clock out. That's why I think his situation is vastly different than James Wiseman situation. I mean if coal as that he comes back to take North Carolina to the IT. He's just a great talent who played at North Carolina. Like who cares but why has been in theory was set to rejoin the top ten team. And you know if you take memphis to a final four. You're a legend forever in Memphis emphasis. You know they don't have the history of North Carolina or Duke or Kentucky. You any Memphis Fan can can tell you that the starters from all three three final four teams. There's never been a national champion. So you got a chance to go do that. And what is a wide open year to walk away from that I still think is just just just odd and I don't think that he would be walking away from that. So it's why I guess I bought them on it this way. I would understand if North Carolina goes three and five in its next eight games and Co Anthony's cleared to return and he says but you know the numbers are so bad at this point. We're not GONNA be able to get to the incidentally tournament. I'm just going to focus on my pro career. I would understand that a lot a lot a lot more easily than then I can understand James Wiseman walking away when he walked away I would to. UNC seven and five and next four games are at home. The road is after that or pit in Virginia tech I understand. UNC's serious down swell here but I do think that it will be instantly good enough spot. Where provided there there are no further setbacks and you know it's an it's an MC L. It's it's not insignificant by any means? Let's he's gotta get fully healthy here. They're not gonNA put them back on the floor until he is one hundred percent you know. Make the parallel almost to design Williamson. Obviously obviously Except signed Williamson is now being handsomely. Paid and company is not yet I do think the Carolina I'm Projecting Carolina will be still within reach of the tournament by the time he was able to come back. And so that's what will make Make that happen. But we'll wait and see obviously get investments on that story will continue to update up to you talk about it and see where we go from there.

James Wiseman Says He Will Leave Memphis and Enter the N.B.A. Draft

"James Wise leaving Memphis. He never came back after his suspension after that forgave came back court ordered to play or the initial possible eligibility suspension Meena comes. I WanNa ask you big picture. What is the moral of the stores I? Sometimes it feels like we're piling on the way but they make it so easy right because the moral of this story is they might have won that battle but what they really lost the war. I don't know what this is going to mean for. James Wiseman I think he could have benefited from marketing himself. A bit by being out there in March but now he gets to protect his body Eddie and perhaps make some money. I do know that this is a huge l. for the NCWA because in March we're not going to see him we're not going to say RJ Hampton. We're not gonNA see Lamelo Ball. This is undeniably undeniably at Trent Sarahspain. Yeah the moral of the story is not just that the NC Double A.'s. Rules make it so that players decide it's not worth sticking around paying eleven thousand five hundred dollars to play if you've already achieved the eligibility age that you need but that brings me to the major problem which is that that exists in the first place it's the NBA rule that required him. Go Play College basketball. When he wasn't interested in the first place like any other eighteen year old who is qualified? He should have been allowed to go do the job he can do for the money he can earn and that rules eventually GonNa go by the wayside because the top three of the top five people that are predicted to go top. Five in the draft won't be playing college basketball this year and as they continue to witness that the NBA is going to realize is that they need to provide other opportunities

"Because his dad is not doing favors, man. And do you guys think this is the best thing that could happen for lamelo because you're having news soon? Lamelo I ran into lamelo Monday. He was here at the TV building. And he made an announcement on the jump that he's going to be joining the Australian. Yeah. League that he's obviously not the one that Ben Simmons played in. I don't know. But that's the key RJ Hampton the other highly touted high school kid jumping ship to they're going to play there. He's gonna play there too. And so that's that, that look that to me is that thing. I, I think we're gonna see more of. Oh, yeah. And I don't blame kids absolutely not for that. We have the lamelo audio. Okay. Let me here. All right. I want to get right to it. You came on here because you said you had an announcement to make about where you wanna play next year. What are you doing? And make sure talents to the NBA. L O ARA hawks. Excellent over in Australia. Yup. Absolutely. Why did you decide this is the way to go for you? You know, I just think it's the best route for me. I'm trying to be the number one pick for the twenty twenty drive. So I hardly got great strength and conditioning over there, so off the court. That'd be good. And then on the court, you know, pros been through their stuff like that. So I think it's all gonna help it just best for me. I think. Steph curry. Kenyon, Martin junior who was going to play with Scottie Pippin son had committed to Vanderbilt and apparently he is now looking to play overseas as well. He that's my understanding of it. So there are a lot of kids making this decision, and I don't blame them because they're actually gonna be basketball ready, if they have real basketball futures in the NBA and lamelo does, and can you Martin's son does. And RJ Hampton does. School is not for everyone. And by the way, it's not that I am pooh-poohing education. Let's not get it twisted. But what I'm saying is school is now for everyone. I'll give you an example. Mark Zuckerberg who founded Facebook left, Harvard didn't finish school. You know what I mean? Like I don't think that, that is necessarily for everyone. If you've got a path that you feel is more direct for you than take that path, particularly to if you're if you're somebody that set up to be a one and done type player at your school, you're not there to be educated. Like that's not why you're there in the first place like the whole thing is. It's, it's kabuki theater, right? I mean, it's, it's a straight, and honestly, you're wasting your own time even having to go to class. Right. I mean like it's a waste of your own development. I'm not saying that you wouldn't learn something valuable while you're in class, I'm just saying you can always go back to school after you've had your NBA career or your professional career overseas. Whatever it is. You need you need to make sure your. Using that time as a young player developing as wisely and efficiently as possible. Right. And if you know, you're only going to be in college for one year in a lot of ways that class time is a waste of time. Yeah, a great, absolutely. And they're only limited and how much they can Pratt, his and things like that and unprofessional squad that won't be the case so yeah, so lamelo will will lamelo, by the way, who's agent is Aaron Mintz, who is the Angelo Russell's agent. Paul Georgia's agent and Julius Randle age. Interesting. Yeah. So he was there with Aaron on the jump the other day..

"The pelicans were the only ones that we're trying to figure out how to deal with the ball family. No lamelo ball, has joined the ele- Warrick hawks of the Australian Illawarra did it of the Australian National Basketball league. So they now get to figure out how to deal with lavar, but lamelo is headed there. He played. Let's remember in Lithuanian twenty eight team for year unlikely he could've played in college under the eligibility rules, but he is still a top prospect for next year's draft. And listen. We, we have talked about, you know, lavar and played some of the sound yesterday, just we everybody knows our, our feelings, or at least try yours. A little different, but about lavar, but this has nothing to do with the kids. I wish nothing but success for those kids and men. I remember Mela when we used to see him, you know, in high school before the whole thing started going to Lithuanian then last year play what was inspires I in Ohio, which was a prep school where he played he's like six six six seven out great ball handler, and, and good enough. It would seem at this point to be a lottery. Pick you ought to be the number one pick in the draft next year. We'll see as far as this classes, concern of guys would be going to college of which he is not. He was ranked twenty first in ESPN's class of one hundred RJ Hampton who's going to play for the New Zealand breakers in the same league as ball in the NBL. He was ranked the number five prospects. So you're getting a couple of guys going there, and then we'll see what happens with the draft, but six six six seven ball handler. Heck of a player no doubt about it. And he's going to get some good tests in that because one of the knocks on is the physicality, we talk about with. "One other thought here on something happened in, in college basketball. I love that. They're moving the three point line back. I love that. There's a short and shot clock on offense rebound. I think these things are fantastic for the betterment of the game. Fantastic. But the, the RJ Hampton thing is weird. Look, we're going to talk about it here with, with Rashad Phillips. My, my guest this week. I just. I don't really understand. Why people are so do I think college coaches, all of them prepare you perfectly for the NBA like no different styles different systems. But I also think that college coaches buying large. Have helped raised promote nurtured eighteen to twenty two year olds. Like that's what they do. That's what they've done for their professional lives. And there's a different type of coaching in a different type of teaching and there's little things that need to be refined. And I think so many players need this. Needed. Absolutely, positively need it and. But RJ Hampton choosing to do so choosing to forego it and go to New Zealand like all right? I think they thought out the decision. My issue is RJ. Hampton came out after announcing he was going to New Zealand said, yeah. Actually signed the contract a month ago. What is with the dog and pony show? And why at least playfully engage with three schools, Texas Tech and Kansas and Memphis, and I think those schools had a little bit of a heads up that this might happen, but having signed a contract, you don't do that. You don't do that in any business. And if we're going to champion his family for helping him make this thoughtful decision, one that values education. How about one the values it's just simple. You pick up the phone you call Bill self pick up the phone, you call penny. Hardaway, you pick up the phone you call crispier to go. Hey coach. It's been great getting to know you, I hope to contended keep this relationship, I'm gonna try some different. I'm gonna go to New Zealand and play for a year and the area for the NBA and get ready for the NBA and they may talk try and talk to you out of it. The they may offer up some perspective on why they think it's a good idea why they think it's not a good idea. But they've been told no before they can be told. No. Again, I just don't understand how somebody's dad doesn't go, like, hey, you gotta tell these guys, you can't go on national TV and pretend and, and pretend like this is a big decision when the decision's already been made three or four weeks ago. But this is the social media thing everybody else's wrong except the athlete except the player where they're the ones that are always, right. Let's just ground the conversation for a second. There's two point two billion people who use Facebook. That's about the size of Christianity. There's one point nine billion people who use YouTube. It's about the size of Islam. Welcome to sleep. "This is a trail-blazing moment. Are you hoping in any regard that, that this will encourage others to do the same? I mean, do you see yourself in that way? Or is this just like, hey, this is just what I'm? Doing. I'm not trying to make statement or anything else, or, or do you see to something bigger? I mean, I'm not trying to make anyone make decision of K. You have to go overseas to, to take your to get to the NBA, because that's not true, people go to college. Get to the way, people do a lot of certain things. He gets an NBA. You could then be at different times. I'm just trying to set a trend that had like take control of your future. Don't let a certain someone dictate your future don't let just because everyone else is doing one thing that you have to do to know. And those rules have been there for a while. And obviously, there was that whole prep to pro generation before they installed the age limit. And there were some there were some different results back then to right? It's worth everybody's got their own kind of challenge there. Are you familiar with some of those cases, to just the guys who came straight in obviously did struggle? Or if you have you familiarize yourself which is a little bit of, like, hey, here's here's the full range of like how guys have experienced come into the league at a young age. I mean, you've got the Koby LeBron. You got Kevin Garnett. I feel like if you're if you're coming in, if you can come. The high school and go to straits name beyond your producing like you were born for the NBA. Like I feel like these guys like sign Williamson cameras, RJ bear. They were NBA put us for ever stepped on campus. They that was just in their blood like they're going to be NBA players not saying they did like a bad thing going college because they, they did a great thing going to do. But that in have to. Yeah, no question. Right. So if this had if New Zealand had not come along the breakers did not come up with this offer. Who do you think you would have chosen this week? It would have been business management business management is that something you still want to come around back to, because a lot of guys even again back to the prep to progenitor guy said listen, this is what I wanna do right now. This is the way to make a living. This is when I met my physical peak or enter entering my physical peak. I can get the education later is that something that you've got great academic background? Is that something you definitely want to come back to oh for sure, I would definitely go back to go back to college. I don't think he does know maybe. Well Dame Lillard. There's it's maybe two man, conversation, it by the time you get to the league a year from now. But you can do so both positions appeal to use a ball handling playmaking specific areas of your game that you feel like are going to need the most attention or that you want to develop the most in your first pro season in New Zealand. I think the, the main thing I want to develop my first procedures just getting acclimated to the physicality and just having a real good. I q for the gamble wanna come over to the NBA and have one of the best. I q the rookie. I think if you have a, if you have a good, I q gonna play, maybe a long time no doubt has anybody from the league reached out to you and your family in the course of this, in terms of giving you some advice on how to deal is deal with this, because they've, obviously got some guys over the years who've who've gone around similar. I mean we didn't really reach out to anyone we kind of kept under wraps for a long time. And, and I think people really just found out about it yesterday. So the guys that did reach out to me. I said, Katie Julius Randle, some of those guys like that reach out to me and just told me congrats, an David west reach out to me until me. He liked my decision. So and in terms of league officials, do they have because they've got international office. They've got all kinds of people who are versed in this area, any advice that came from the league itself. Like the player says players. Yeah. So your video, you were doing some work. Nice nice facility now. It is Chris Chan, you know, Kurt Berger into some of the people that association, just as you know, as a player, you know, once he's in the NBA that will be kind of a resource. So you'll have you have again, Georgia's mentioning off. Michael, those picking up a little bit Christian and. Kirk burger others with the MVP who have spoken with you. A little bit is the MVP kind of offered itself as a resource ongoing in that regard. I mean you're obviously not in the union until you get. But I mean, I think they just they wanted to kind of congratulate me yesterday, and then I'd be worked out there. And, and so that's what I did. And I don't want anything like kinda give into until I'm actually in the NBA. Those are all good people. I'm, I'm sure they would take care of you. If you needed anything in the way couple before we let you go, I think I probably know the answer to this. But feelings on the age limit, I think it should be shot high school for sure. And I mean I think it'd be I think it'll be done in night. Twenty twenty two twenty twenty three at the latest. Yeah, they're working on it, but the union in the league seemed to still be kind of trying to figure out the way forward here. It seems like they've stalled out in that conversation. But, but if the age limit we're gone, you, you, you would have been jumping straight in what a deathly. I would definitely try try to go. Do you feel in any respect?.

"But in another respect, like, there have been a slow trickle of guys who have pursued this brother reasons, by the way, actually, let's go back to this because some of these guys, Brandon Jennings and some others moody, it was because academically, there might be issues, you have no academic issues whatsoever. Can you tell me I think already heard this, what were your SAT and GPA was a three point? Eight in my city was the twelve eighty which is pretty stellar. I believe if I recall correctly as a longtime for me, I think that's well ahead of my SAT and my GP. So you, you had obviously great options, but the guy who went before it was more almost out of necessity. Did you look at their cases though? And just in terms of what they did or did not get out of it, because I look at it, and I feel like it's a little bit checkered in terms of how it prepared them or even with their MBA careers became, and I don't mean that every situation is different different than those guys, but it's been a little bit rocky for some of them. How much did you look into them? I mean I kind of looked into it, but I was mostly looking at the guys that have been playing over seas since they were sixteen and seventeen Luca dancing. I've looked him more than I would look at, like moody him doing this decision because I'm not going over there just to just to play a New Zealand. I want to be there and learn learn the game of basketball in a much better way than than I wouldn't America. So then I can get over to the NBA and be just as polishes, as Luca and try to kind of model. My game not necessarily model. My game and model like the way I play. The way I approach the game after him. Yeah. I mean it's, it's different the way it works around the world. Right. Especially in Europe. And as you mentioned with Luca or, you know, guys like Dirk Nowitzki, or others Tony Parker. Guess you came through that way. It's more this academy system, right? Where they're they're solely focused on basketball from the time they're in their early teens. Yeah..

"It's, it's easier transition to when you get to the NBA. I think that makes a lot of sense to me. At the same time, of course, the guys who go who are one and done. I don't want to put too much on this, but they're not exactly spending a lot of time. I don't think on the academics. It's, it's pretty much about the basketball. How many what were the conversations like as you tried to weigh those things, and your father played it at SMU? Right. So he knows spent a while, but he, he knows what that routine is like, what give me an idea of what the conversations were like with your family and advisors about how to weigh those pros and cons. I mean, we just wait them by just like just looking at what would help me most New Zealand. What would help me most in college, and we finally came down, and we without news the best foot? It's very exciting. You are you, are you. You little nervous, too. I'm not nervous. I'm just like it's exciting. But, you know, you said, you got to move away from home, and you gotta go halfway across the world. I mean that's the only thing. Really? Yeah. When's the first time you're going to actually go visit to go just check out facilities and possible places to live and all that August late August sometime? Yeah. So is it a? Initial scouting trip almost like go oversee come back and then you'll move later or when does actually guys just go. Oh, okay. All right. So you won't see you won't see it in advance. "But who are high level, NBA type prospects to come over and he's taking them up on that. So why did he make that decision? Why Australia or excuse me, a New Zealand instead of say the G league wide pursued instead of going to any of the colleges that he could have gone to. He was also pursued by Duke and Kentucky. I think RJ Hampton will explain it best. His case will be one that's definitely worth watch. Over the next couple years as we see whether the NBA finally removes the age limit or not, it seems to that discussion keeps seeming to get snagged but RJ Hamptons decision. I think pushes that door just a little further open. For other guys to also say, you know what college isn't for me? My path is professional basketball, and this is the way to go so fascinating conversation. Think you're going to really enjoy it before we get to that. My weekly. Happy to be joined in studio by r j Hampton RJ. And his agent George welcome guys. Thanks for coming in. They do they so congrats on your decision and the opportunity. It's phenomenal. It's fascinating. And I'm sure it's been a whirlwind. I know you've, you're making the media rounds here in New York. Gimme a sense of since the moment you went on ESPN and announced this, and I think probably surprised a lot of people even though some speculation, what's it been like since like, would have you heard has been just a whirlwind who've you heard from any guys in the league reach out, give give me a sense of what the aftermath has been? I mean it's been crazy. I mean, I've had a lot of support I kind of tried to, like, staff my phone as much as possible. But like I mean you can't really do that. But just my friends, just congratulated me and my family, and then as far as like Lee guys go, probably the biggest one was Kevin Durant. He reached out to me yesterday. It was like congrats, bro. That's fantastic. How did Katie had no how to get a hold of you? We've been we've been deeming back and forth for probably like a year and a half now. Nice. He fallen on Instagram. One day, and then ever since then we can be kind of been cool. There must have been kind of starring in a cool way where it was. So nice to get all that support. There's probably been some, you know, some I don't know about backlash but probably some criticism, too, or just people wondering about it like, what's, what's the most craziest or most critical thing, you've heard that you've had to kind of respond to about the decision you've made to go overseas to go to New Zealand to play accent responded to anything to be honest discount on just let them think what they want. But I mean there's definitely been some backlash. I mean I just try not to read it. What, what is it been? Like what what are they saying? Just probably mostly. This is mostly the college fans of the teams that I didn't pay just like you should came here. Why don't you come here of that kind of stuff naturally? Have those folks seen New Zealand? I mean, come on Google the photos a New Zealand, folks. It looks really nice like no defense that Kansas, Memphis. But my gosh. Yeah. I'll I'll, I'll just I'll do the sly little. So is there I won't put that on you. But I have not been to New Zealand, but I have seen the pictures and I've heard things and it's, it's beautiful and interesting place to start your professional career as well just curious before we get to the basketball mean how much have you ever been there, have you done overseas traveling with your family before, like how much of the world, have you seen, or is this going to be kind of a brand new thing?.

"It's forty eight hour back senior NBA writer for Bleacher report. Thank you for joining us. I am very pleased to be joined in studio today by RJ Hampton. You should know his name by now, folks, easy, five star basketball, recruit, number five in ESPN, one hundred class of twenty nineteen draft class of twenty twenty but you will not be seeing him this fall playing for Memphis or Kansas or Texas Tech, which were his finalists before he decided to go his own route, and that route is going to take him halfway around the world to the New Zealand breakers in the Australian National Basketball league. This is a ground-breaking move folks of very rare move for a player of his caliber and one who does not have to do this. He's got the grades. He's got the SAT's. He's a really bright kid. He could be going to any of the great schools in the US to start his or to, to pursue a college career before going into the draft. But he made a different kind of choice. He. Believes that the best way to the NBA the best path is distraught off as a professional immediately. So he's going to New Zealand with his entire family and he's gonna play for the New Zealand breakers, a team that's part owned by former NBA all star Shawn Marion, and it's a fascinating choice. We've seen a few other guys, do this usually under duress where their grades or something else didn't work out. So we saw Brandon Jennings go to Italy back in two thousand nine and Emmanuel moody go to China in two thousand fourteen this is a little different in the Australian basketball league is also made a very big push to get guys who don't want to go to college..

"All this stuff spills, we'll play over this about how terrible he was to other people, which he denies all deny course, there's a lot of people think I'm a terrible human being. And I know I'm great person. That's my friends anywhere. Anyone staying with basketball, RJ Hampton is going to skip going to college and going to play with New Zealand breakers of the AM, B L. That would be the Australian National Basketball league. He's playing for a New Zealand team, but I don't think the games are in New Zealand. I think they're all in all. Yes, North Korea has good basketball, they do have good basketball, this was announced yesterday on ESPN, and it elicited applause from Jay Williams and Jalen rose applause from them. I took note of that. I think this is a one day story. I think it's a complete non event, because I think that in a very short time, Adam silver, who has already said the one in done is a stupid rule to complete restraint of trade awful ruled that people like this, this, the amount of people in that population this going to go to the NBA, you know, if he wants to go make money in Australia. Good for him the level of Australian basketball's probably every bit as good as college basketball in America. But I don't think this is the harbinger of anything to come. This is happened before other people have done this Emmanuel moody did this, this is the third or fourth guys done this, and it doesn't there's no revolution here. It doesn't happen. You don't say, oh my God. College basketball's going to die and the Australian it is. It is in that he said, I want. Dreamt of playing college basketball want to go to college. Now. What to go? What makes him interesting is that reportedly has something like twelve sixty on his boards, so he could go anywhere. And fine. But again, my position is let's not think that this is going to revolution from breaking. No, it's not. To baseball to baseball, Mr.. Tony the Los Angeles angels of Anaheim beat the Oakland. I totally to store, and nobody cares about this story in the east. Right. Nobody cares at all that, that Shohei Otani who can only hit this year because he's he can't throw because he had Tommy, John surgery, had a hit that beat Oakland. The only reason I wanted to bring it up was a Oakland had won ten straight, and I defy most people living, east of the Mississippi to name three people on the Oakland Athletics. Can't do it. Nobody knows who they Reggie Jackson and every year, Oakland go every year in the summer, Oakland has a stretch where they go like twenty two and five. Yeah. And then you see them at the top like close to the of the western standings. Right under Houston. And you go, what who are they, they do this every single year? They don't spend any money on any players terrible. Here they go twenty five and they are in the playoff mix. Yeah. Can you name it conversation? I couldn't well I could one guy I condemn the home run hitter and he's out but lucky Trianon I think, is on that team is trying to yes. Yes. Seen the gone out to the bay area number of times with the great Gretchen move, nobody set the ballpark the a terrible terrible stadium. That's wonderful because it sells stadium. Yeah. Yeah, terrific. And speaking of the raiders who no longer play in Oakland gonna play again. This year aren't before they end up going. Let's Las Vegas. It is still live. Yeah. But if you're raiders season ticket holder, aren't you just furious with the situation? Well, the raiders have signed a Richie incognito deal. The aptly named. Thing. But incognito, that's what the raiders. That's what Davis. What? Yeah, that's the raiders of the court of last resort. Jason. What was the name of the guy who he who he Stanford Stanford? Jason he was a first round draft choice on the offense Jonathan Martin Jonathan Mark. Yes. Jonathan mountain of the dolphins. How quickly we forget. Yes, it's basically gave I don't talk about the this. Okay. I want to talk about Mount Everest. Yeah. This is very troubling lart dying. This is Mount Everest, has become the Santa Anita racetrack of nouns to you see these pictures..

"And now are to Hampton a novice completed different. You got a very special guest in studio right now. You made his decision this morning, five star recruit top ten projected NBA draft the twenty twenty draft RJ Hampton who decided to say he's not going to college. He's going to play for the New Zealand breakers who are Jay. This is breaking news to you. I'm part owner of the team. Oh. Not so. I'm your boss for one year. I'm not actually. Yeah. My first thing is your boss is do whatever you want where players first team place. Yeah. So you do whatever you want. Don't worry about it. If you ever get a problem, you just text me, and I'll, but yeah, it big news its users. Because you, you are the first college player five star recruit, who, basically decided this who could have gone anywhere. There's Ben guys, we've gone overseas but it's mostly been academic reasons. What was like the decision process at what point did you say? This is actually a real thing. I'm going to go play in New Zealand. I think when my parents brought it up to be happy brought it up to be the kind of talked about it throughout the season, and I really make a decision while I was in high school season this year. But after that, I really took a hard look at it looked at all the pros and cons. And that's what I'm side what I wanted to do. So when you did the pros and cons list, what was what was part of the conce, because I mean the pros, obviously, you're getting, you're, you're gonna get paid right away. You get to work out all the time. You don't have to go to class, you can focus on basketball. What were some of the con? That you went through. I mean, maybe some of the cons we like missing out on college experience, college life, and then can just like moving far away from home. But that was really I felt like there was way more pros in the were calm. Yeah. Yeah. And we also I should should note that we have a good friend, full owner, not partial owner of the New Zealand breakers, Matt Walsh here also former teammate of mine. So Matt when this all went down, like what, what point did they hit you up and was like, hey, this could actually happen. Well, I didn't believe in so we had the signature okay which was when about a month ago. Yeah. Shit. Shit kept us a secret from month. Yeah. You know, yesterday, I wasn't trusting. Story. Real quick. Matt wall the you saw Carmelo Anthony to the breakers. That was like, obviously a precursor where Matt was maybe trying to figure out who maybe the leak was in the in the organization that was false. That was misinformation. Yes. False information that right? Matt mack? Colangelo is true. Yeah. You don't need the headphones. Yeah. Identified the leak, and we're still working through that. Yeah. That's used a microphone headphones before Matt happening again. What was the first over? Hormel thing happened. Basically, I put it out on a group. What's up that everyone asked what the big global news was going to be, so I put a picture of Carmelo putting Carmelo. About ten minutes later. It was all over media. We've got a big league. We've got a crash, so we're working through it now. I'm I knew the RJ news yesterday and I was not a leak. No, you sat on it. Pretty good. Chatter with RJ on the like on, on part of my take today. We're like we just wanna flex it. We know that no one else knows. So for big big information coming at eight thirty. It was like, wait, what? Okay must be get up. I think all things considered did pretty good job contained degree. So RJ. The I saw the quote that you had, it was very interesting. You basically were like I wasn't my goal has never been to be a college basketball player..

"Well, I'm happy brought that up because Jeff Goodman, little Debbie Downer turt- in the Punchbowl tweet where he was like, good for him for deciding to go to New Zealand and make money in forego. His amateur status but outside of a few. NBA exacts, this won't help his brand. Now, first of all, I think only cares about NBA exacts, because he wants his literal goal is to just be in the NBA said he does not care about being college athlete, and to guess what Jeff Goodman, his brand is going to be fine because we're going to be the number one RJ Hampton podcast on planet earth. I think you're forgetting something big cat. And that's only three out of thirty in bay. Execs have the internet. So a lot of them won't be able to watch his highlights and stay post on what he's up to also. Hey, John Goodman. I'm really looking forward to your series on HBO coming out soon. They'll awesome. But have you ever watched a little movie trilogy called the Lord of the rings that was in New Zealand people seem to pay attention to that? So looks like checkmate, also just think about, like I mean, it's, it's ridiculous. I think you could make that argument twenty years ago. But now look at all the international stars that are in, in the NBA Luca Danni, which you can tell me that Luca Danni, which was like. Household name leading up to draft. But that's just false people who are tuned into basketball. Definitely knew who he was. But if you ask the casual fan, a lot of them didn't know he was, and he becomes the best rookie in the class, and it's like that just kind of happened in terms of, like visibility and branding. He got everyone everyone in the NBA circles knew he was that's all that really matters. And the Brandon comes after so good job, RG Hampton. We stick it to the man, and we have on the show. Yeah. Great job RJ in. It's not like NBA executives, we'll, maybe they do. Maybe they're affected by, like a very selective short term memory loss. They've been in tune with us kid for the last three years. They actually, you know what recruiting an NBA scouting probably starts in sixth grade by now. So they have been paying attention to this kid for a long time. They're not gonna forget about him because he's, he's actually playing in the future. He's traveling to the future to play in New Zealand. So I think he'll be just fine. I'm very happy with the with the strategy and the package that we were able to offer them in terms of compensate. Nation, even though he is taking a pay cut going to New Zealand instead of Duke. But that's something we, we could offer them a little bit more off the court than Duke could, so I'm very happy. I have there's one thing that I'm worried about though, what it's I get carried away with stuff, you know, that about me. So when, when I got a little taste of breaking news, I kind of I took that a little bit some would say a little bit overboard, someone say not far enough overboard, even though I count devoted to my dog you're talking about the account you created your dog where you tweet out, fake news, all time, then delete it when it's wrong some would say that, that's over seller would say that, that's taking overboard, I would disagree. But I, I'm worried that I'm going to take this overboard and just make a bunch of offers to people to come play for my team that I really have no decision making powers over. So I mean if t-. Yeah. Listen, we're already one step ahead of you because hanging, I had a discussion today and we are going to hit the AAU circuit. And hit me, okay? "You don't know how to guest who is ranked as one of the top five recruits in this year's class. Heading into college RJ Hampton made an announcement on get up this morning, the might change the game forever. Let's listen to our next year. I'll be going overseas to play an Australian basketball and with the New Zealand breakers. My dream has never been to, to play college basketball. My dream is always debate to get to the next level in the plan, the NBA. So I mean, I think this was the best route for me to. Like a pro and play with grown men every day. And, and not kind of have to juggle books in basketball and just focus on my main goal. My dream was never to play college basketball. And he's academically eligible, he can go to wherever he wants twelve eighty on SAT kind of three point seven. GPA. So we've seen this path be taken. He's not the first Jennings. Moody come to mind. Correct. Ferguson, one of the things that I appreciate about meeting him today is when you make this move. The first thing comes to my mind is maturity he has it seems like it had way more at his eight to day, and I probably have now not a high bar get over. But that's okay. The other thing is infrastructure. His family dynamic is really strong put his mother with his father with this agent happy. And so I see a young man that is prepared for this move and understands what he wants and that was refreshing for me. And also it's a game changing agent for this reason it takes courage to be unique into different than to do something for the first time. And. He's a guy that right now, you project him as a guy that could go to Duke decade, go to Kansas. He's also a guy that could go overseas. A his craft. The majority of people that leave school as an underclassmen. I'll make up a stat ninety nine percent. Don't go back and graduate from college completely made up stat. That's likely inaccurate. But like you're saying, okay, you, it'd probably be ninety nine point. Whatever okay don't go back and get a diploma. What does that tell you their focus was clearly on their next profession, which is fine? This is the United States when he says, I don't want to balance books and basketball's. Jeff one. Why would I have to do that, while we're a case so much on books when really basketball's one what's gonna make money? "But also send the mean tweets or nice tweets if you want to we'll start with Dominique, and we need to begin with the patriots. Because you have something crazy up the patriot reckless. Woo, goodness, roots will not when the Super Bowl this year. Swallow down over there. No. That is absurd as blasphemous against the history of the league, so far, however, they are losing gronk. If you think about in their games last year against the chiefs when they need a big plane against the Rams. When you need a big place, they went to grow. I know he wasn't the player that they wanted to be year all year round. But when they needed something they went to them and these other teams in AFC are contenders. We got the chiefs, obviously in the Browns. I love the Browns. I think they're America's sweetheart popular kind of invoked pick for Super Bowl run. And if they could put it all together, I think they could be a problem for the patriots and Tom Brady, the old eventually right? Maybe you're Tom Brady's not getting old. He's defying the one who said he wasn't humid earlier on this show, not to make references for things that we've already said. But anyway, let's continue with the reckless speculation. Because Dan, you have one about Derek Carr. The raiders quarterback Derek, Carr gives Jon Gruden does worst nightmare. They taught ten quarterback again. It goes back to twenty fifth. Eighteen back to two thousand sixteen was MVP caliber player because some of those additions that they've brought on the fact that this quarterback is plenty good enough when he has weapons around him. He's got one of the great receives in the NFL now in Tonio Brown. It's going to be able to push the ball downfield at Tira Williams. Big receivers, again, going to allow Derek card to push the ball downfield. Josh Jacobs out, Alabama's gonna be huge addition. I looked for this offense line to be a good player. We're gonna run the football and then take some shots downfield. Derek Carr is going to be a top ten quarterback again in his big man. What do I do with the quarterback that I really love? That's the interesting part about your regular speculation about Derek Carr because needed. That's not exactly what John Gruden wants. But we'll see how that goes, Dan. We're going to get Niki. You have another one, but we're going to get back to you right here. You have a wreck reckless speculation about the AFC title game and who might be playing in it. Well, I know there was some news at the draft was going to Cleveland. Get ready for the AFC Tato game to be outside. Whoa rounds are going to play in the AFC championship game. And they are going to play against the colts. I'm only on the Browns. I've been on for a long time said it during the season last year, they were going to be a Super Bowl contender this season. Everyone knows about all their dishes. They've made all off season and all the talent that they've brought in I've spent that talented gel to bind together, Freddie kitchens to be fearless. Coach this team to go to the title game in the face the colts a little bit of a reckless. I don't think it's that outrageous though these two teams are both two of the more complete teams in the NFL book offense and defensively really good coaching. Staffs, I looked for outside which AFC title, which one's going to beat the patriots while I don't know you told me that we're going to. On this book with me. We. Rounds losing to the patriots. So let's save called. The recklessness news. And let's go to Dominique here, because earlier, Donald would be your MVP. What? Do the Rams. I love he'll still be the MVP, but the Rams are going to miss the playoffs because of mostly what's happening on the other side of now the defense wasn't great last year, and they've lost a guy like sue and the corners were not speller. And I don't think that they're getting any younger, but I'm decided balls where I'm more concerned missing to inside off the blind in, which is really going to hurt..

"rj hampton" Discussed on Get Up!

"Tonight, eighty stern on ESPN and the ESPN app and what an extraordinarily interesting morning. We have working here with a few days till the NBA finals and the Stanley Cup finals underway last night. We've got this explosive article about the Lakers, will die back into we just had a young man announce here with the number five rated prospects in the country is a basketball player that is passing American colleges entirely and going over to play in Australia. Very busy morning as we continue on get up live from above the Heineken river decked at pier seventeen and another huge hour is coming your way right now. Get up with the Lakers. They wake up this morning to explosive new account of all the dysfunction in their organization. You genuinely aren't gonna believe. What is going on now? We'll get to the bottom of it. What are the rich about to get richer? The warriors on the verge of superstars return. And it is in Kevin Durant. What impact will boogie have on the finals and the cardinals gambled in picking pilot Murray. You'll hear why one of our guys things. It is a risk that is going to pay off when the biggest possible way all that. And more as we get up live from New York this morning. But I want to start with this earlier this morning, ESPN dot com published an article by our Baxter homes detailing the dysfunction of the Lakers organization, specifically under the leadership of Magic Johnson, and rob Pelinka, and it's almost impossible to do Justice. All that is in the story. Let me give you a sense of what's in it magic. Johnson is portrayed as an intimidating boss, who routinely threatened employees job security stance that belies his charming, public persona. Rob Pelinka is perceived story, we have trouble with the truth. You often says, things that simply aren't food when trying to make a point that dishonesty is caused the crisis of faith. Fate in the Lakers, GM. And there's genie bras seen as an absentee owner, who has relinquish decision making to others, including Pelinka and for close friend, Linda Rambis. And LeBron James agent, Rich Paul is depicted as one of the biggest decision makers for the team off and on the behalf of his biggest client, who, of course, is the brawn James. He also represents Anthony Davis among many others. All of this is just the latest in what has just essentially been to use the phrase that is common these days, a dumpster fire for the Lakers. So again, we've had a little time to sort of roll through all of this Jalen. What do you imagine? Lebron James is thinking. And what are you thinking? Lebron James is not gonna panic because as long as he's healthy and worst case scenario if they have the young talent that they have the Lakers are going to be good next year. I just want to be a person that says that also I wanna just go through the layers of people you just go for young people. They want to work in corporate America and, or any profession your boss, at some point in time, it's going to be considered intimidates. This comes with the territory when you talk about rob having problems with the truth. That's what happens when you work in the front agent for an office. I'm sorry. Always tell players and, or work with the team to true because you don't know the next domino, as far as Jeannie van, absentee owner. We see owners like Jerry Jones who are very hands on most owners are at sinc- actually. And lastly Rich Paul being a decision maker, whitland, Ron Jay for organization that's been happening since the beginning of time, we have a superstar player, he should be involved in the decision making of a basketball team, especially icon of bigger like LeBron to be clear. I wanna make sure I understand your point because I think this is important. You're saying that, while all of this does paint a dysfunctional picture that maybe it is being blown up the Lakers because of the enormity of the personalities that are involved. And you don't think this is all that far removed from normalcy in an organization like this. These are these that are happening in franchises that don't have success. We're just not used to seeing it with the Los Angeles Lakers because they have sixteen championships. And they once had Dr Jerry Buss presiding over the Oregon..
