Flu-related death reported in Riverside County, its first of the season amid fears of possible 'twindemic'
"Already underway in Riverside County, where they have confirmed their first death Now, Ah man in his eighties from the San You Sento Valley, who died last week in a hospital. We're still a few weeks away until the flu season really begins to rant up, so health officials are urging everyone to get their flu shot before October if you can. They also note that some of the same measures used to curb the spread of Corona virus may also help stop the flu, like wearing a mask and frequent Hand washing. While we're talking about the flu, with so much emphasis on the search for a Corona virus vaccine, it's important to remember that now is the time to get that flu shot. The fluids here. Case is already being reported across the nation, including here in Southern California. But there are those who still just don't want to get a flu shot, even though they're readily available. Here's how Dr David Vegas puts into perspective the argument over taking it or not. Do you want a little bit of inflammation in your arm, which is the flu shot? Versus inflammation in your lungs, which is getting the flow and the answer. Obviously, as you wanted in your arm, there is no downside. With the exception of feeling potentially a sore arm and maybe a little bit of a fever for, you know, a few hours after a flu shot That's it. The downside of getting the flu can obviously be death but also can be other long term ramifications. Health officials say the flu shot is even more important this year because of the Corona virus pandemic.

The South Asian Identity In The Current Political Moment
"To prime spots at the political conventions went to two Indian American women Nikki Haley and Kamala Harris, who each leaned into their South Asian immigrant identity and their speeches. Here's Haley, former U. S ambassador to the U. N kicking off the Republican National Convention yesterday. This is personal for me. I am the proud daughter of Indian immigrants. They came to America and settled in a small southern town. My father wore a turban. My mother wore sari. Meanwhile, last week while accepting the Democratic nomination for Vice President, Kamala Harris thanked her mother for raising her to be proud of her Indian heritage. We're here to talk through this moment for South Asian Americans in American politics is Kartik Rama Krishnan. He's a professor of public policy at U C. Riverside. Hey, they're welcome. Thank you for having me so to conventions to women, speaking about their families and their upbringing, with so many Americans watching what these two moments represent, do you think It's a pretty remarkable moment. When you look at the Indian American population. It has grown tremendously in the last two decades, of course, in the case of comely Harris and Nikki Haley They were born and you know, the 19 sixties and early 19 seventies. So you know they've been part of a prior wave of Indian American migration. But still, the vast majority of Indian Americans have arrived in the United States since 1965. And it's remarkable to see how quickly the next generation has come up in politics and how big a deal is their national political political prominence for The South Asian community here in the states. This is a big deal. I mean, what you've seen, for example, is more and more Indian Americans running for office. So you have the so called Samosa Caucus, which had five Indian American members of Congress If you include the House and the Senate after 2018 I think what you're going to see now and especially with Harris. His candidacy is even more people getting inspired more Indian American South Asians more generally, and especially Asian American women feeling inspired to run for office and I think the same you're probably going to see on the Republican side, although When you look at candidates running for office where Indian American, the vast majority of them tend to be Democrat rather than Republican. Well, I was just about to ask is we hear so much about Latino voters? Black voters, other groups. I was going to ask which way understanding is hardly monolithic, but which way South Asian voters tend to lean in and how big a role they could play in 2020. The South Asian voters tend to lean Democrat and pretty heavily Democrat. One way to think about this is that they tend to be the most Democrat leaning either in terms of their party identification or presidential vote choice among all of the Asian American groups on DH there, Lina stronger than among Latinos but less strong than among African Americans. So that's a kind of good benchmark. Now there has been a lot of out its by the Trump administration. So President Trump had a rally in Houston called Howdy movie Rally with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He made a high profile trip to India this year as well. That said, it's really going to be hard to shift in the American voters and other South Asians given their partisan lean and also where they stand on the issues and on most issues like health care and immigration. And gun control in the environment. They tend to be progressive, so it's going to be a group that's going to be very difficult to dislodge from the Democratic column that was Professor Kartik Ramakrishnan of UC Riverside talking about the Indian American vote. It's about 1.8 million Indian Americans who will be eligible to vote in this coming November's election.

Los Angeles wildfires rage as heat wave bakes West
"Wave in Southern California is making it difficult to control multiple wildfires burning in the area from member station KPCC in Los Angeles. Julia Paschen has more. It was the third day fire crews have had to endure more than 100 degree weather, while battling wildfires in Los Angeles and Riverside County's firefighters have had to take frequent breaks to stay hydrated while working in full protective gear. The extreme dry heat of this weather system can accelerate flames. But for the ranch to fire burning near like Hughes, thunderstorms are an added challenge. Smoke from the fire has created its own microclimate. A dense cloud was visible from across southern California Saturday, and that plume has all the ingredients in it for thunderstorms. That means crews must watch for fresh fire, sparking from lightning strikes and for spreading embers caused by erratic storm winds.
Trump Administration Prioritized Border Wall Construction Over Other Options in Flawed Process, Government Audit Says
"Called President Trump's Border wall 1/14 century solution. They say artificial intelligence and new surveillance technology. Khun Secure the border without spending billions on steel and concrete. Now comes a government watchdog report that false customs and border protection for not considering alternatives to the wall. NPR's John Burnett reports. Trump's giant wall gets all the buzz. But customs and border protection is quietly testing a new generation of free standing surveillance towers on the Arizona border that could revolutionise border security. Telescoping towers are equipped with infrared and daytime cameras, along with laser range finders and illuminate er's that can zoom in on a target miles away for a close up there mounted in the bed of a Ford F 1 50 so they're completely mobile, and they can be operated remotely. They can tell an agent if the object moving north is a cow or a single migrant or a family camera. See, something is going to alert and send that information to an agent in the field. Directly. So if I have a phone now, my phone haven't app on it, And that information will come directly to me. That CBP is Kelly good as deputy executive director of the program Management Office. He's in charge of technology acquisition. I met him last march at the Border Security Expo in San Antonio, where domain awareness technology was the hottest gear with Trump's border wall Now approaching $25 million a mile, I asked Good. How much to the mobile towers cost, huh? The lesson 1,000,000 less than a 1,000,000. That's the same question the inspector general of the Homeland Security Department had last month, the watchdog released a report critical of the border patrols. Single minded fixation on a wall is the answer to border security. The inspector general wrote. Quote CBP is an ability to effectively guide this large scale effort poses significant risk of exponentially increasing costs. In fact, the audit said, Border Patrol insisted on a wall even though the agency's own internal analysis said technology and boots on the ground were smarter solutions in certain regions. Representative Henry Cuellar is a Texas Democrat from a border district where CBP proposes to build 121 miles of barriers. We now are in a time we can build this virtual border wall technology. We have that already. I mean, you got the autonomous surveillance powers. But there is a political pressure from the White House. They're saying build me the wall. Get me mild. Last week, Three landowners in the Laredo area filed legal documents in federal court trying to stop the government from condemning their riverside property for wall construction. One of their arguments is Thie Inspector general's report. Carlos Flores is an attorney representing the property owners. 10 years

We Wade into the shallows of the story that we think will make ripples and this week. We're in Oslo. The park land along the banks of the city's Aca River which courses through the Norwegian capital has experienced Rene slumps over the past thirty years that other cities would do well to look at thanks to oppressive cultural development led by the city of Oslo and Norway's Ministry of the environment it's now home to a number of institutions. These include the Oslo Academy of Finance the Oslo School of architecture and design and the Norwegian business school not to mention the National Center for dance landscape architect and planner Ulaby Tomb served as project manager for Development and met Monaco's McManus the International Federation of Non Scape Architect World Congress to find out more the keys rebranding. The minister emolument who was born on soggy marriages. Close to She wanted a new national park and the national parks would be awkward. Reach has to do with the industrial history and women history in Oslo. She's Social Democrat and she was an activist on both fields and the her department told her that. The sorry Ma'am do have national park because over legislation. Don't allow it in national parks in Norway. Our High Mountains and that are India there just a few people. You can't have the downtown area. So then they said never mind. I want to National Park. You can call it something else. It was named the Heritage Park which is close to the American system that you have on the East Coast in New England. This new branding or architectural was crucial to the attractively for different institutions to move there because four eighty five very few institutions. We're considering this profitable place to move. So I guess the Tai Chi messages the importance of having a brand and communicating that to people that their plan or is that just a happy coincidence? That happened. That was plan and I think that also has take lesson from that when they started working on the front because the sea from has been branded to that might be result of new individualism and the new public management approach. More commercial values new. You will have to ask something. Public Transport authorities have been working that way for more than forty years. It has to do with putting up names and it sounds ridiculous but it's reality. Are there any like he moves? That people need to when they say wanNA brand their own projects or their own landscapes. Well I think it's important that you are almost into brandon. You come over brand. You can't tell people that this river is that most attractive river park you'll find anywhere in the world if it's not you should not let the marketing people take too much power to be honest and you have to be honest to your professional values as a landscape architect you. My landscape is far better than any landscape you ever saw. Because that's never other designs coming first or is the brand and the intention coming first. What's the order of that? I think the program first because landscape architects they all have to consider the the quality of the site and they have to develop a program that this through the value of the site. So that's the basement. What we build upon that could differ a lot but I think if you go back the last forty years since you had the post modernist period in architecture has been a tendency to over the sign a lot. It's a bit anxious to be too simple. I think we should recognize the heritage from the Nordic modernise Mitch's that it's never a wrong thing to be simple. You sort of mentioned that you can't hide from that heritage is that that people are tapping into when they're working on projects like this river park. How important is what's happened on that landscape before to inform? I guess what's going to happen in the future. Urban Situation Like Orchestra Lavar is very profitable. Because when you have a long history you have a lot of stories to tell and then you can use the park and the sign to tell the histories and if that does history a couple of hundred years. "Change in the back straightaway was downhill all the way you know and have been and then around the turn it back up very similar to like The boot at Watkins Glen where Scott Downhill tight turn and then back up hill so again very very challenging turn for the drivers I love it. That sounds that sounds awesome was the elevation change similar to say EH. Maybe Laguna Seca and the corkscrew. You know where it's almost a hundred and fifty feet when when all said and done I don't think it is quite as extreme strain as Laguna corkscrew. I think that's the Eunice. corkscrew is quite a unique in that sense but but there there you know was quite a bit availability change at the At Riverside I would say it's kind of similar to Like a Bridgehampton which is another lost track but the the elevation Obeishi changes were similar to that or again. Like I said to walk. It's Glenn Awesome And jumping and looking specifically the USAK years and then which was in the late sixties in cart years which was in the early eighties. It looks like the USAK years they use the two point six mile layout and then the a car years they use the three point three mile layout so yes. They made a change. When the faster cars came back there but Any specific specific or interesting indycar anecdotes from the six riverside races. There were only six of my. You Know Dan Gurney won the first two to I forget who won the third. The three cart-races Rick mears Ruled I two and then ray rail won the last indycar race at Ed Riverside but interestingly enough you know Mir's has a reputation as a oval specialist but what a lot of folks don't realize realized the early part of of of risk rear. He was one of the best on road courses. He really was and after he had the that horrible accident in San Aer up in Canada where he nearly lost both his feet it. It made the the road courses a bit more difficult for him. You know he kind of excelled a little more on the ovals but In in the enrich early days he was he was a beast on road courses. You know he not only WANNA riverside wiped up field but a lot of people. Don't remember that they remember Rick as the Oval Meister the master of Indianapolis but early career and Rick came out of the SPCA. He's old. Oh Formula Vee guy you know he. He cut his teeth running road courses so You know to To kind of cornhole him it's being an oval specialist is. He's not doing real justice to his early career. But those are some fine wins for for Rick Riverside back in the early eighty one hundred eighty two. That was honestly. I did not really know that beforehand so look at that. Some Rick mears knowledge in a Riverside International raceway episode. So yeah as I mentioned mentions There's only six races. Dan Gurney one to work. Mir's one to Some Guy Mario Andretti won one. And then Bobby Rahal when the final one at the end of in nineteen eighty three also a formula one race that I think I've mentioned at the beginning of the nineteen sixty They they were trying to get a a grand prix in the United States. I think in in fifty eight or fifty nine. They held one in C- bring and then they they went to riverside for nineteen eighteen sixty stirling moss won that Grand Prix there. And and then after that walking's gland successfully bid to host the US Grand Prix and then it was held there from nineteen sixty if you want through nineteen eighty so but riverside did host. There was the the you know grumpy. United States in Nineteen Sixty Points Ping race for the championship so and speaking of championships. The the the racist they use that races that were held at the Riverside. Or all the season enders you know again. Due to the favorable weather in California those races were held in early December December first or second for the Usak races then for a long longtime the File race of the season. FOUR NASCAR was riverside with their championship deciding race. You know oh I mean believe it or not if if you think about Nascar today this day and age how it's so strong and oval series and how we try to get a really neutral track for the championship for format. Whatever you WANNA call it now of it? They used decided championship on a road. Course back in the day and then prior to nineteen eighty two or eighty three riverside was was sometimes the season opener for Nascar again. Due to the favourable weather there in February it would it would be before the Daytona five hundred wasn't until the eighties that they tone a five hundred together to two open. Open the year for Nascar so little little bits of Riverside history where it was you know not just it was not just another race on the calendar was it was a very important race on the calendar for these different series now again. We really haven't touched on sports cars a lot but the La Times Graham free was a sports car race. That was the signature event now. Sports cars were wildly popular in the in the seventies sports cars and canam racing. And this this stuff back then was it was more popular than stockcar racing or open-wheel racing. They they would have great races. There Riverside huge crowds Then later during the MCI years they they changed that to it. Endurance races a six hour but that was always there signature race lifetimes grump Frey and these sports car race. You have have guys like Andretti. In there you know you're talking the Ken Miles and the Carroll Shelby's and and all these Jackie you know all these guys is it You're used to see that Lamont's and whatnot and you know you guys Leica Jackie. Stewart Graham Hill hopping sports cars here and then so that was really. Yeah I it it it blows my mind today. How sportscar racing has taken like? Almost you know fourth seat behind Formula One NASCAR NASCAR INDYCAR disappointing. I just appointing but NASCAR race. NASCAR sportscar racing was hugely popular. during Riverside's heyday and that was that was their mark event. That was there. That was your moneymaker. Yeah I would've loved to see you know the the older cars there out of curiosity. I'm looking being in the race results. The year Stirling Moss one in Formula One has the length listed at five point two seven seven one. Oh you know why. That's because hundred kilometers in this whole that whole European numbers things really confusing. We're going to leave. That in the episode is that was it was user. Error Iraq raised here erased here recent riverside for many years many years you have the first. The first season of of Iraq I believe was seventy four and They are Riverside was one of the Iraq race so I WANNA say Mark Donohue won the first Iraq side. If I'm not that mistake yeah yeah. He won twice there Mario on Bobby Unser won. Seem trying to pick out some other. INDYCAR names Scott. pruitt one in eighty eighty eight. which was the last Iraq year and then Emerson Fittipaldi won nineteen seventy-five. Yes there's some. There's some huge winners even in the in the IRA series these that were open wheel related. I mean I know the series I kinda miss you know that was back in the seventies eighties. It was pretty cool. They used to ah the first year they had. Everyone had a porsche. Carrera you know then they. They don't want the Camaros or whatever and they they kinda sanitized it and and You know in in the in the later years of Iraq they made it favor of the NASCAR guys because of the type of car but early on. It was more of a sports car than than stock car in Iraq. But that's another neat series. That's just gone and lost to us. Yeah I definitely I mean I remember watching the IRS. Here is growing up than I did not know until just now that it used to be well. The first couple of years were a poor series which sounds amazing. Oh yeah much better than the you know the era Camaro they had in the ninety so yes so we will wrap this up here with kind of you know. Howie typically wrap wrap these up? The downfall of riverside was the typical land became more valuable elsewhere sort of issue. Oh Oh that's exactly. What the issue was these housing development started popping up around and then they Eh polly unless Richter got outs They sold the track to a guy named Fritz. Duda who was a racing guy and had every intention of continuing racing. You know people were were Kinda glad that they sold it. The Fritz rather than selling it to land developer Fritz tried to hold on for a while he purchased the track in nineteen eighty three By by nineteen eighty eight. It was apparent that that number one local opposition to the the noise right as well as of course just the the urban sprawl and development went around on their made it much more attractive to just go ahead and sell it and have them redevelop the property And they started dismantling the track in nineteen eighty nine the last Last major event there was a NASCAR race The knife and eighty eight. I believe Ricky Rudd was the winner. was the last major race. Or they they did some club racing in eighty nine few tests sessions but then they began dismantling the track and it was a long process process operations building actually stayed standing until I believe two thousand five the administration building for the track. It would repurpose but that that eventually went away The Nice thing is that the the housing development there's a shopping mall and several housing developments on the old property the housing developments there. They've in almost to the track. Most of the streets in the developments are named after race car drivers. They're just like Andretti. Elaine Gurney Way. PENSKE street surtees avenue. You Know Fourth Street there. They're all they've done that and then then they took most. This is the stuff from the administration building and a lot of the the memorabilia from the track and there was a museum. It's stood for a while it in in the riverside area and it was just you know. Hey this is where the race track used to stand. I've got all this stuff in the museum but eventually even the Ziam fell into financial trouble and a museum close twenty twelve so but literally. There's I think as late as ninety four ninety five you could still pick out turn nine and the back stretch on a map but now twenty nineteen there's literally nothing left other Other than memories and old film and I don't know what what's happened to the museum collection. Our hope that I know somebody is tending to that. But it would be nice if somebody would kind of jump in and see if we can get that stuff on display somewhere you know. Maybe maybe in the Indianapolis Museum Museum or maybe in the Nascar Hall of fame exam but but I believe that collects needs to go somewhere instead of in storage. Yeah I I would love to see what they had. They're the only only so for those who are near La and possibly are curious about driving by to check this out the handy research. I've done here says that on and there is a lowe's warehouse where the old turn nine used to be so that is your Check out the the lows there and and we can say that it was Riverside International Raceway so with that. We'll wrap up Another episode here with Riverside Help everybody enjoyed one. That was out local to Pennsylvania New Jersey Area Franken.
