"Sports at 15 and 45 powered by Red River, technology decisions aren't black and white Think red. Now to rob Woodford. All right, it's almost Serena time over at the U.S. open. It's the highlights of this second round action here tonight as Serena Williams takes on the two seed in the women's draw. So a victory here tonight sets her up pretty nicely for a deep run. We'll get you caught up on what happened the rest of the day at the U.S. open a little later. The nationals right now in a scoreless game bottom of the first inning with the Oakland a's as a try again to get that first win for anaba Sanchez, Owen 5 on the season, but made some strides here. What now Ron Rivera? I think going forward, it's really about putting the rest of the pieces in place. We like a lot of things that we've done. We like the guys that we have in a lot of the positions. Now it's just making sure we have what we need to continue to improve and get better as a football team. And they apparently think they can do that with Rashad wild goose and Tariq Castro fields who were claimed off waivers today. Now for Castro fields, it's a homecoming of sorts. He was graduate of Riverdale baptist and he was at a four year run at Penn State with John Dodson. That's my guy. Very hard worker. A guy who's going to put it out on the line every single time. I've spent a lot of time with him over the years. Just working, trying to get better. He's going to fit this culture very well, you know? So there's a family around here, you know? Guys are very close knit. He's going to fit right in. He's just a great person to have around, so I can't wait to have him. "One flare or another. I remember one time we were playing against the team and I just had these feelings that he's emotions about like watching another player play and like I didn't understand what was going on, right? It was actually watching another girl play basketball that she was internally asking herself like, why can't I take my eyes off her? Why am I paying so much attention to her? Like she felt very drawn to this person. And like my cousin comes to me and he's like, don't go out like, you have to tell this girl I like her. You just have to let her know. And he's like, I just can't stop looking at her. The way she plays basketball the way she dribbles. I just can't stop looking. And I was sitting there like, wow, this is what I'm feeling. I feel exactly the same things that he's saying right now. Like, he put everything into perspective for me. As a kid, I really didn't know how I felt. I was just like, why can't I, what is this going on? And then my cousin comes in, he's like, tell his girl how I feel, and I'm just like, wow, I feel like that too. And trunk falls like, oh, my God. I like this girl. That's what this means. And I kind of buried those feelings because for one, we were strong in the church, you know, my dad had a very, he was very strict on like, you know, how he felt about same sex relationships, like when things like that came on TV, he didn't really want it to be on TV and stuff like that. I was like, okay, this is definitely something that I should not tell anybody, and I should just keep to myself. But important context about The Bahamas is that for people who are queer or gay or lesbian or by historically, the country has not been particularly friendly to members of the LGBTQIA+ community. And that was something that John Cole felt as she grew up. And so she immediately has this recognition and then proceeds to bury that. Yeah, same sex relationships were illegal in The Bahamas, Katie, until 1991. Same sex marriages and civil unions are still not legal in The Bahamas today. And John quell Jones is also balancing the fact that she is a Christian whose faith is still important to her, but it just in terms of getting from The Bahamas to America and then into the elite basketball pipeline. How does she pull that part off? Because I also don't get the sense that The Bahamas is considered this big feeder to the WNBA. You are correct. It is not. But for those who are in the elite basketball circles from The Bahamas, it's a small circle. And that circle went to work for John Cole. And so coach, you let mcphee mcewen from the current head coach of old miss, actually went home to Freeport because she's from the same town as Chan quall. And saw junk while playing for her dad. And through some conversations, kind of asks, would you want to play in the United States? My coach and The Bahamas at the time coach Moore mcphee. He used to take us over to the U.S. all the time and I just realized how much better at basketball they were than me. And then it got to the point where it was just like, yes, I'm getting better, but they have something over here that I just don't have, and I can tell, you know, like I can just tell what the resources and stuff. And so I think from the 5th grade, I started asking my mom, can I please go to the states? And let me go, I want to go over there to play basketball. And she was just like, nah, you're not ready. You too young. 6th grade, same thing, 7 great same thing. And then 8th grade, she finally was like, okay, I feel comfortable letting you go. And you know, I feel like you're a mature enough to be able to handle that. And so coach yo, place a phone call to Diane Richardson, who at that time was the head coach at Riverdale baptist school in Maryland. And so Diane Richardson got involved and had a few conversations John quell, then decided, you know what? Let's.

"I think 28% of players that transferred that's wrong. It was D two D two players didn't end up at a at a D one school. But I did look it up, I believe it is 43% of transfers at the D one level don't end up in another D one institution. So that's 43% of players. That rough count just from the stuff that we know obviously we all have access to the entire transfer approval. But, you know, it's like cautionary tales and I hope schools are making sure that players are aware of it. They should be in a bad situation for you, but just know like, I think Jeff wall said it like, hey, the grass is the grass always looks greener because fertilizer BS. It's hilarious if Jeff falls who has benefited so much from the transfer portal that we say that, but I think the point kind of stance wait, repeat it again, repeat it again. The grass, the grass looks greener on the other side because it's fertilized with BS. Even use BS, you said the whole thing. Oh, of course. As you know, if you're just trying to make because I talked kind of over the last part of it, so I wanted to have it clearly stated. So that's interesting. Folks, self censor, which we love here. Speaking of transfers, let's talk about coaching transfers. As I like to call them. Yeah. Carly Tebow dodon is obviously a favorite of this podcast due to all your mystic size. She ends up getting her first head coaching job at Fairfield. And Fairfield just won the MAC correct this year. They did. They did. So she's coming into a good program. Getting a good chance. So I just want to shout out to Carly forgetting her first job. Yeah. I am so excited for her. And Nancy was up there, Nancy T Bo, and Eric and Mike were at the mystics training camp, and I know they're going to be making that trip up there. Wearing their red Fairfield stuff. So it's really fun. It's forgive me, guys. I'm not from the northeast. Where is Fairfield? Is it in Connecticut? I believe so, yeah. Okay, cool. I did not know that. It's in Fairfield, Connecticut. Does that make sense? There you go. I don't think I've ever been to Connecticut for as much as we talk about Connecticut. Maybe I'll go up there. It's like in the beach. Whatever. That's cool, man. I know where it was. When you go up there. Huh? Yeah, right. I'm so wrong, you know, hang out. I do think I'm wrong. I don't think Fairfield will in the MAC. I thought they did. I think that they did. They did. They went 19 one. Okay. So they did. 19 a month. And they were in the tournament. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Because on the men's side, I would say Peter, you won. Yes. And made that big run, yeah. So, sorry about the confusion there. Shouts to Carly. Also, obviously, if we're not, if I'm not talking about Miami, I'm talking about William and Mary. Aaron Dickerson Davis is the new one's basketball head coach at William and Mary. Yes. Seems like a great hire. You know more about her, so I want to get your take on her, but she's a northwestern grad, played at northwestern, spend time with Taos in Georgetown, most recently I wake forest. All those schools really make sense with William Mary, which is a very academic first school art, every school is academic first. But William Mary is like, the classroom is way more important than the court. And I think she can handle that if you've been at Georgetown and wake forest certainly. And she can help bring in recruits from this area. So I'm excited for it as a William Mary alum. Now I love her. And I think she has a tremendous opportunity there at William and Mary. She was at Georgetown when my daughter was being recruited by Georgetown. So she was on staff there. So we spent a lot of time talking to her and being on campus with her and she was just amazing. So when she went to wake forest, I know Jen Hoover very well. We played against each other in college. And so for her to go down there with Jen, I thought was really special. But now for her to be first year head coach, I'm super excited for her and congrats. That's going to be fun. It's going to be fun for you as an alum to get down there. I'm going to try to go to a lot of schools around here. But yeah, I'm definitely going to definitely go back to William and Mary. So yeah, shout out to her. I think there's a ton of other news that we can always get to. There's a ton of stuff that we leave on the table in these podcasts. I don't think I'm missing anything you got anything else, Christie that you want to yes. One of my really, it's hard to call, you know, players who you recruited and coached, it's hard to call them Friends, but that is a great friend of mine. Sarah Jenkins, who played at Riverdale baptist, a recruited her when I was assistant coach at Maryland for her freshman year and she decided to leave after a freshman season. And I took those two years off in between, had two babies, came back and I came back and coached at Georgetown, and then that's where Sarah had transferred. So I coached her her freshman year and her senior year. But she was assistant coach at Penn State before that she was also at Georgetown and Delaware, but now she is back as the head coach at Delaware. I'll talk about crying when Nas noman's name was being called when that news came out that she was going to do that. I mean, Natasha there, she took the head coaching position at Arizona state. She was at Delaware. They made that run to the tournament and lost in college park. But for her to be able to come back and coach at Delaware, I'm just extremely thrilled for her. I was talking to texting with moka, and she was this excited to all the DMV years or just over the top with the possibilities with Sarah Jenkins being there. Her dad, reverend John Jenkins, said, first baptist church of Glenn Arden, Maryland. Her mom, like I know their whole family, but he has a mega church in PG county, Maryland. They're going to have a lot of support for her because that's not too far up the road. It's kind of Delaware's kind of extended DMV. Yeah. We count it when it's when it's beneficial to us. Absolutely. That would be a matchup that we can go to. Down there, Williamsburg, CA matchup between William Mary and the Delaware. There you go. And then Della Don, maybe there too, because that's her. That's her. I thought it was a little surprised that she wasn't at the Maryland game, but I'm sure she had other things to do. She's working out, man. She looks good. She looks good. Whatever she was doing, it seems to have worked. But yeah. Jenkins. Shouts all the new coaches. It's really, really exciting time for all these new coaches taking over, especially all the ones we're near us. So yeah, that's all I got. That's it. This will be talking next week. Now, season won't be up Saturday next week. So maybe we'll do our season preview. I know. I can't wait for that. Once the rosters are narrowed down, unfortunately, I know it's going to be hard to do, but once that happens, we will bring that all to you, but we don't have to go home. Y'all don't have to go home, but we got to get up out of here. They're cutting the lights out on us. We're still sitting here courtside. "I am Christy winter Scott, joined as always by my guy, gave Ibrahim and his Nia clouden shirt. Oh yeah. I may add. Game oh boy, the WNBA draft was amazing. So many teams got better, I can't wait to talk about it. I mean, there's so much to unfold and unpack right now. Where do you want to start? Was team do you want to start with? Well, so I want to start with Miami Heat. Because obviously, it was my birthday yesterday. I'm 29. I mean, elder stage millennial here at 29. Elder stages. But he got a huge win last night. So I want to just give thanks to not only Jimmy Butler for having 45 points, but to all of my all of my Friends on Twitter who wish me a happy birthday in which the Hemi heat luck because the heat were previously zero and two in the playoffs on my birthday. We are one and two. Hey, hey, you know. And also, if you want to give me a birthday present, dear listener, subscribe to the channel. Hit subscribe on whatever podcast app you have. Our Twitter names popped up, follow us on Twitter. That'd be an amazing, amazing birthday gift. But the best birthday gift, as you mentioned, was all the women's basketball news that we got with the draft training camp started like a bunch of college basketball news, so we're gonna try to slam everything into a show. Which is, you know, the court side way. It's the game and Christie in the game and Christy way, but I think the place to start though is with your draft reactions I did a show with Dano on last Monday talking about the draft I also talk about the draft with Greg bibb. Here on the channel. So go check out that stuff. But I want to get your reactions to what happened and I guess starting out with like which player do you think ended up in the perfect spot? Well, first of all, happy birthday and you're wearing the gift from me. I mean, I was not aware you and Candice Parker shared the same birthday but happy birthday to both of y'all. But Kate Hudson, weirdly. It's a weird group. Kate Hudson, Candace Parker and me. I like it. That's the trifecta that we love. I love it. And millennial that you said the elderly. Older millennial. At 29, anywho, we'll move on forward, but I think that in the draft for Indiana, I think for them to have 7 picks, I think they got more rugged immediately in all positions. And I'm excited to see what they look like. And to have 7 picks in one draft, come on man. Who does that number one without getting better? So I'm anxious to see the young pieces that they selected, how they mesh with players like Kelsey Mitchell with Indiana and how Marion Stanley shuffles and moves them all around. And Lin Dunn has done a masterful job of selecting the tough nose defensive minded players that are ready to work. And I love it. I think it's going to be fun to see that. No, I agree. I think Indiana did really well. I know a lot of people were a little shocked with the order of the picks. Because Lexi hall was kind of not in the law first round mock drafts. There was clean egg bow and then they end up getting destiny Henderson at 20 when we thought, hey, maybe they should take her at 6. So it was a weird order. I'm with you. I think they just did an excellent job of collecting talent and finding a way to, I think one of the challenges they will have is finding a way to have 5 or 6 rookies on a roster. That's going to be very difficult to do. Right. And to a certain extent, they're not trying to win games next year, so that's a good thing, right? We know who's in next year's draft. So getting the number one pick next year is of the utmost importance to everyone. But I do think I'm with you. Like they just did an excellent job. Melissa Smith is a player we talked about all season long, Emily ensler, huge impact in the tournament and all season, Lexi hall. Hey, maybe we didn't see her in the first round, but she can rip the net and she played in a system that really tested her skills and put her to the test and she's obviously a really smart basketball player. You don't play and Stanford without being that. Queen ECMO has a lot of growth potential, obviously knows how to play with Smith. You got destiny Henderson. You got Misha Williams holiday from Jackson state. I mean, it's just like Ali pepperberg's on this roster now. Not make the team, but I like it. So I'm with you. Fever, hey, we have not said a lot of great things about the fever on this podcast in the last two years. I'm happy that they got this draft going. Yeah, I don't know. And I love that Ali pepper landed there, right? Back at home and back at home. Yeah, there was this picture of her, I believe it was on inanna fever's Instagram where she was holding her follow through, but it was her facial expression for me. Like, this is it. This is why I came back for another season after, you know, being injured after transferring from Notre-Dame and then going through it there in Indiana and coming back for that extra season. It's all for a purpose. And you'd love to see it work out for the hometown players. And speaking of hometown players, number three, Shakira Austin to Washington, coming back home from, but also played at Riverdale baptist, the same high school that Tiana Hawkins played for, who was now back in D.C. as well. I just think that she's in the right place. You were talking about which players landed in the proper position. In terms of the draft in terms of the team and the roster, I really think this is an opportune moment for her to step in as a rookie and learn from some really great players and some just iconic coaches like MIT and Eric Tebow and his staff. I just think that Shelley Patterson to me, she's won 5 titles as an assistant coach in the WNBA. She's now on with the mystics as an assistant coach. So there's a lot of experience. There's a lot of leadership there. Latoya Sanders is back on staff to work with the Biggs. I just love the fact that she's back and ready to work. You know, back home and ready to work with this experienced atmosphere here in D.C.. No, and I think Shelley Shelley Patterson is going to be huge for developing her shot..

"That also being said during Canada was like the obvious choice once I put those two things together. It's like, oh, we can now today why can't we announce it? Because it's restricted free agent. So if it's restricted to a join, we have to wait four days for the LA team's match, even if they are team can not match. So right. This all makes sense for drug count. But there's another free agent whose team can not match your contract. Well, actually, we have to talk a little bit more about Chicago possibly. Yeah. The diamond the shields is the other answer to that. I've come up with and that's it. That's all I got. I know diamond machines is not like a backup point guard. I don't care. I'm just saying, that's all I got, guys. If anyone has any better theories, I've heard players from across the world that I have never heard of before in my life being bandied about for the spot. So, hey, send the, send us your takes. We will listen to all of them before we find out. But yeah, diamonds dealer answer that I've come up with. Wow. And that would be interesting as well. I mean, you know, I thought speaking of Chicago with being signed by the sky, just very comfortable on my table, told us today that that's the really good, respectable discussions with him about her plans moving forward in the WNBA. And unfortunately for D.C. fans and for the mystics, she won't be in a mystics uniform. Again, to see all the pieces back together, Tina Charles also not back. So that blockbuster lineup with Clark and oh man. Anyway, we just won't ever know what that look like. Elizabeth Williams coming into the fold. My show is on re signing as you predicted last week. I know she's not above me, but that's how it is. And. The mystery signing Tiana Hawkins coming back, tutorial walker kimber come back. What was the thing you're most excited about here? I love that Tiana Hawkins is coming back. I was sad when she left. And not because she's a DM beer. And, you know, Riverdale baptist and tarp and champion here in 2019 with the mystics. And went down the bubble with the mystics and really, you know, captured all of the fans while she was here in a mystics uniform, but I just love that my people said the biggest thing that he missed in particular about her outside of the tactical things was her leadership. And her voice in the locker room and how she was always the first person to speak up and how she's the best teammate and my Asia Heinz Allen cosine that. Just to know that part about her, we know she's a fantastic mom to lily. And he's coming back to. And it's just I just think this is where she belongs, you know? It's just like the perfect fit in always culturally for the program for the organization for the leadership qualities that she possesses. I just think it's a wonderful reunion. And the same for tutorial kimbrough, and that regards Troy walker kimbrough is back as well and, you know, she journeyed away for a little while there and had to really fight her way back to the league. So, you know, kudos to Mike TiVo and staff giving the respect to players who they know a lot about who fit their system and they know that already. So it's not like they're experimenting with the fit of those two. So I love that. And I love that my child is coming back and at least we get part of that puzzle that we thought we were going to get. Minus Clark and I mean, I'm sorry. Minus Charles and Nissan, but with Clark in there, I'm excited about that with Elizabeth Williams, the diversity on the defensive end. I think an offensively is going to be really fun to watch how this group, this new group meshes with one another. Yeah, now I think this group makes just a little bit more sense. I mean, I love the idea of like the Emma Tina EVD like super mega team, but I think this is more sustainable to you in the future. I think that was kind of like, hey, we're going for the championship. Last year the year before. Obviously it didn't work out because Lana del Don wasn't healthy. And guess what? And ain't going to work out again. If Atlanta Della's not healthy. So that's the bottom line is we are, I think this team has done a good job locking up my Allen for the next three years locking up air Atkins for the next two to someone Natasha cloud. Natasha is a little bit older, but definitely my aerial Atkins are going to be here for hopefully a long time. Hopefully the number one pick fits into that. So I think they've done well to now make this team a team that can succeed in the future in the present. And succeed in the future, which is something that I kept banding about about this off season that they have a chance to do this. And I think they've done a pretty as well as they could and to your point though. This team's going to be the D.C. MO since EDG guy here was really great offenses, right? I think it's going to flip this year. I think this team is going to win a lot on the defensive end. Because you have Elizabeth Williams who is a former all defense first team selection. She is a really good room protector. I know some people out there are going to say, hey, her synergy numbers are bad. And they're pretty average on the defensive end. But she definitely protects the rim and this team last year gave up, I believe it was like 69% of the room. I was like 5 percentage points higher than the next worst team in that statistic and having Elizabeth Williams there along with fingers crossed a healthy Elena Dell Don, I think we're cooking with gas along with Natasha Clara who's in all defense second team selection..

"Good. They just have to limit the amount of Courtney Williams that are getting this year. But I don't think it's going to be something that's like, there was a wrench into the system, I think, you know, in terms of a chemistry perspective, this is probably the best place for her to be right. Everyone knows her. Everyone's done with her. Yeah. Absolutely. But that's what I'm saying. It's like, you know, the chemistry piece is going to be the same, but it's going to be different because these players have changed a bit. True. Right? So I think that's going to be really something to look for with Connecticut like, you know, you look at it on paper and it's like, oh yeah, but then you look at it physically and it's totally a different story. With the way players have changed their skill sets and their confidence and their strength, all of that. And their ability. So I think it's going to be it's going to be interesting to see how she fits right back in physically. Like, on paper, makes sense. Physically, let's see what that looks like with all of the players and how they've evolved. Well, and she's going to have I mean, she's coming in probably at best as a 6 woman. And I'm not even sure she's going to take that spot because the teach I haven't split great since in the past couple of years. And what are you going to do? They have some pieces there that could fit in in front of Courtney Williams. I think it's about managing expectations to declare like that. Managing her expectations, managing your expectations and I think Kurt Mayer has a good grasp on how to deal with corporations. I'll say that. I think it'll be good. But John quell, man, I mean, you have to applaud her for taking less than the max. I know that's not necessarily everyone's first reaction, because everyone wants these parties to get paid as much as they can, but this whole team has sacrificed at least somewhat to get this group to have a chance to win the title. Next season. And she was the last piece of that. I think she deserves applause for coming back and sacrificing a little bit for the rest of the team. How about this? How about John Cole Jones, I mean, how much less money did she take? No, we don't. We don't know specifically. No. Significant? I don't know. I'm guessing it's not super significant. So like a list of, I'm just using a different example here from the sync. Okay. So Alyssa Thomas, she's getting paid 200 $1000 this year. And she the supermax this season is $228,000. So, you know, she took less, but at the same time, unless I Thomas was injured last year when she signed the contract. I would say it's somewhere between dewanna bonner salary, which is 227 almost 228,000. So just a shade under the max, and then some and then probably above Alyssa. So anywhere from 200,000 to the supermax. So maybe maybe it's 200 grand and it just depends. I got to look at the like we have a GM sheet. Yeah. The breakdowns. To see what their cross response. But it is going to be she's taking less, whatever it is. And why would she and explain to me and us? Why she would do that? Why does she need to do that? Why does she need to do that? Because this team would be, let's see, I'm going to tell you now, so I have about 500. If she took the full max, they would probably not have space for court loops, depending on what depending on what Courtney Williams are other offers are. Potentially, if they're bringing in Courtney at the minimum, that would be space for someone else like Brian January or any kind of free agent at that level. That would be to bring someone like that. So that's how you take a little bit less just because they do need a little bit of room. I haven't done all the math here. I'm sure. It's okay. I'm sorry, Richard Richard Cohen's on it. We'll find out. But no, I was thinking that it was because of Courtney, but I wasn't sure exactly. I don't think it was actually that. I don't think they would just do it for Courtney. I think it was more. It's more so like, hey, you know, I'm willing to sacrifice because of the rest of the team has sacrificed and we're here to win championship. And if this money helps us in any way, she may be willing to do it. But I don't know. I mean, I don't know. John Paul, John Paul seems like I don't know if you've ever talked to John Paul. Yes. She is the chillest person I've ever talked to in basketball. She is so just like easygoing, just willing to answer any questions and it's a credit to her that she's willing to do it. But more so just like it's an indication of her personality, that being said though. I think last year in the finals we talked about that personnel in the conference, the semifinals. Yeah. That kind of personality kind of hurt them a little bit outside. Yeah, yeah. And she is. I mean, she's a sweetheart. And, you know, when she played at GW, they went back to back when they were in the 8 ten. They run back to back 8 ten titles. I mean, she's from the DMV. So, I mean, just to see her evolve from Riverdale baptist to GW to now being all of that in the WNBA I mean her personality is has always remained the same. Oh yeah. So yeah, yeah. She's tough. Don't get that voice. I mean, she's KD esque. Okay, with her skill set, her ability to knock in those threes and get to the rim and like all that 6 6 come on. She's legit. She's legit. I was watching the 2019 finals. I watch it like, I don't know once a month now. I was watching games. I was like, I love it. Just like watching John quell battle, Emma, and just I miss those days. That was so epic. And hopefully there'll be a parade. I don't know. I mean, I'm not pushing it. I know COVID and all the variants I get it. Like, hey, the mystics deserve a parade for that 2019 run. I'm just going to put it out there, say what you want. I said what I said, so. I think they do too. You know, I was going to talk about Lana but we could skip over Atlanta for next. We're obviously we're D.C. far. Let's talk about D.C.. So my finds out, I was going to come on here and talk about a report saying that she has interest from Seattle Indiana, Minnesota, and New York, which all makes sense..
