DOJ Investigates Olympic Groups

"US Justice Department is investigating sexual abuse within US Olympic organizations the following the case against former national gymnastics team Dr Larry Nassar currently serving ineffective life sentence for sexually assaulting women and girls. The Federal Inquiry Creek comes ahead of the two thousand twenty Olympics in Tokyo joining me now with more details is Wall Street Journal reporter Rebecca O'Brien Rebecca. This seems like a widespread investigation allegation which groups have you found that are under investigation right now by the Justice Department so it is a wide ranging investigation and it's actually I think best thought of as multiple investigations that interconnect and the important bodies to think about here are the US Olympic Committee the Center for Safe Sport USA gymnastics and and USA Taekwondo and the FBI which is sort of a side issue but think of it as like a layer cake right this mitigation which is being led by multiple offices offices in the Justice Department along with irs criminal investigators is looking at bad actors who are coaches or doctors in the gym level of various Olympic Sports. It's across the United States and then secondarily. There's an investigation into potential cover ups and maybe financial and business wrongdoing by the national governing bodies are N. G. Bees like USA gymnastics or USA Taekwondo and the third level here. Is You limit committee to the big overarching organization Asian. They're looking you know as well their response to sexual abuse allegations another potential financial wrongdoings now how big of an impact did the Larry Nassar Sir case have on the current investigations. This was pretty blockbuster case shook up the world of gymnastics in the Olympics too large extent what I think I mean the Larry Nassar case it slowly began building came first surfaced right after the Rio Olympics more than three years ago now and what I find incredible is that what the Nassar case not only did it first of all you know hundreds of women came forward with allegations but it really also opened shed light on all these other cases like in USA taekwondo or there had been allegations and some mm cases convictions of coaches that had kind of been lost to history and these this repeated. There's a trend over decades of misconduct induct and sex-abuse in a number of different sports that no one really had paid close attention to on a grand scale so the national case really not only was had a tremendous impact on on gymnastics in the Olympic Committee but it also just opened the floodgates as it were now we are looking ahead to the twenty twenty games in Tokyo what under the implications for the US Olympic system as we have been talking about the Nassar case did cause a lot of damage to the institution yet national case did a lot of damage image to USA gymnastics but it also had some blowback on the US Olympic Committee because of executives there who were informed of it and didn't necessarily take steps that many people in the public thing you know they they didn't talk about it more publicly. They didn't take steps to advance the investigation and they leave with egging their face and what is important about these investigations. I the thing is that they show the continued legal pressure on the USOC. There's political pressure with also legal and potentially criminal pressure on some of the executives or former executives of these organizations and going into twenty twenty. They're going to want to resolve this. I mean not only do you. WanNa make sure people are safe going to the Olympics but also it looks bad if the USOC he is heading to the next Olympics with this cloud of uncertainty and investigations over their head and of course you know in nine years they're going to be hosting the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles so oh you know we'll see how they resolve this

"And i think l michael's as well yeah and i love the sports but i did miss you i must say and i know a lot of people decided nah al hadn't done it as long as i had but we had both decided years before that that was going to be our last one in fact i signed a contract in two thousand twelve but you just don't make these things public i signed a contract in two thousand twelve that extended what were then my present duties nbc but gave me the option after twenty sixteen to leave both the olympics and football and assuming meritous role and i let the nbc brass know that i was going to do that as early as the beginning of two thousand fifteen well before the twenty sixteen rio olympics and at that point they wisely went out and looked for someone who could both replace me and ultimately replaced al michaels because i think is likely to do i don't want to speak for him likely to do three more football seasons and then end on the next time and bc has the super bowl and to rico is very versatile and he can both host and do play by play so they hired the right guy there's there's no doubt he's a talent but there's only one bob costas did you watch the olympics location or i watched it but not obsessively wasn't like i was dvr airing every moment of here but i watched especially the prime time portions mike and i have been friends for more than thirty years he won the first bob costas scholarship at syracuse university i established a scholarship that was to go to aspiring broadcast students there was a special clause that if the student was from the saint louis area then he or she got the leg up on that's only happened a few times but it was up to the faculty to pick the most promising student and he was the very first one in one thousand nine hundred seven so i've known him for more than thirty years and i was very happy not just because he's enable successor but because he's a longtime friend well they call miami university in oxford ohio the cradle of coaches yeah you might call syracuse the cradle of sports broadcasts too long list well you sean mcdonough tirico i n i n eagle len berman marty glickman going back bo is one of the gr marv albert and then outside sports ted koppel dick clark jeff glor who's now the the anchor the cbs evening news a very long list yeah and too many stories too little time but people may for forget that you had the late night show it was carson then letterman and by the way you're on both of those shows in recurring roles on letterman calling the elevator races and i can't even imagine what it was like to meet johnny carson and let alone beyond his couch yes but then you had an interview show afterward didn't paul mccartney appear on that show paul mccartney appeared on that seinfeld mantle mickey mantle seinfeld appeared four or five times and and they're all on youtube now or many of them i don't know if that's that's what that's what i'm told as you know i'm not the most technologically uptodate person but i have seen a few of them on youtube yeah i it's so impressive and i recall back in the day we might scoff at it but montel williams who had a late night talk show said that he borrowed you're interviewing techniques and that he studied your work and i'll be honest a lot of us did eurosoup suburban interviewer are you thinking about doing netflix series yes whether it's net flicks or some other place showtime or going back to hbo the two things i'm interested in doing now are continuing to do baseball which i do on the mlb network the charlie brennan show on cable charlie brennan show on camel wax once a year and to reprieves the kind of show some sort of hybrid of later and the commentary and issue oriented stuff i used to do on hbo i think the long form interview is in eclipse in television in general now everything is sound bites everything is with the assumption that people have the attention span of a gnat but you find out when people talk about mark marins podcast and podcast like that or the the kind of programs that you see on television there's a huge portion of america that truly appreciates an in depth conversation which is not.
