Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine deemed "safe and effective" by the FDA

"And johnson. It's been shown that they're vaccine is effective at preventing hospitalizations and severe effects of covid. Nineteen this from scientists at the fda we're seeing about. I think it's sixty six percent effective when it comes to moderate to severe cases of covid nineteen so matthew. Tell a little bit more about what we're hearing with. His johnson and johnson vaccine right so what happened. Is that johnson. Johnson released data about a month ago. You know press release but the process for evaluating these vaccines is that they go through the fda and the fda really unique in the world independently looks at the data and re analyzes the data that the company produces and its own report and then hold a public meeting which will be happening friday and so the documents before the public meeting came out and they had some good news both some really clear data on hospitalizations and a general sense of approval from the fda researchers. Sometimes they're not as positive so it looks like this may be another option now. The big plus is on. This is one. It's a one shot dose. So you don't have to go back for a second jab in the arm and also doesn't need to be kept frozen like the pfizer derna vaccines do so shipping and handling of all of this will be a lot easier much easier to transport and that's a big advantage. It does not look like we're gonna have a huge amount of supply the start off with so it doesn't dramatically change how fast we're going to be any shots into people's arms but for a lot of people i think in a lot of experts i talked. You think this'll be a great option. It's one and done. I think some of the numbers. I saw the might have about four. That are produced right now. Ready to send out so it gets approved. They can get those out really quick but it wouldn't be until april possibly where they can really ramp up production to start distributing that right and will also be getting over that where they're hundreds of millions of doses of the two vaccines have the madonna and fayza biontech vaccines. That are expected to arrive in the us by july. So there's gonna be a lot more vaccine available. The jj supply will ramp up and we'll be getting more of those other two vaccines that leaves. There's a vaccine coming from nova vacs. We don't really know about how much will getting the early results issued press. Release again good and we're waiting for. Us results on the astra zeneca vaccine. Now some good news. With his johnson and johnson one is its effectiveness against these variants. That we've been hearing a lot about so it fared better than expected when it comes to those. I the way to interpret. That is we'd seen some results and the new results that they showed today look a bit better than what we'd seen in terms of variants. There's still does seem to be decreased. Efficacy against the south africa variant. Three five. Which is really the one that we're all worried about but it did look better than what we've seen previously and what j. j. has said it seems like with those variants. This vaccine is still preventing severe disease and hospitalization. Which are the key things. We've always wanted from vaccine here. The idea that you'd prevent a symptomatic infection or mild cases kind of bonus compared to just making sure that people end up in the hospital hospitalizations numbers were good on that front. What did we see when it comes to side effects. I saw that there were a few unexpected side effects. Although these are very rare you know but The expecting side effects the kind of pain in the arm the headache fatigue. That's pretty much in line with the other two vaccines. We have that right now. There were some rare events that occurred more often in the vaccine in the placebo group. Keeping in mind that forty thousand people were in this trial. There were fifteen serious blood clots including some. Dvd's in that exciting compared to ten in the placebo group. That's something the fda plans to monitor there was also some rini ears in the vaccine group and not in the placebo group. So that's kind of an odd one that will wanna watch again. This is really a prelude to friday win. Some of the top experts in the world are going to gather on zoom call and go over these data that the fda assembled we'll be live blogging that stat. That's when we really find out a lot about any medical product. It's it's one of the amazing things. The fda does now an interesting thing in all of this so public health officials might have a messaging problem when it comes to pumping the johnson and johnson. One out when we're seeing guys like pfizer maderna's say that their vaccine is ninety five percent effective against corona virus. Just listening to numbers right. This says sixty six percent. So what are they going to have a challenge in getting people to want to take this one over the other or you know how how to work out. It's really important to realize that particularly between those three vaccines. The getting vaccine is much better than not getting a vaccine. The change vaccine may be on par after a second dose and that study is being done but unlike visor during the second dose is going to be months after the first and then also slows down the study. She gotta wait right for people to get their second dose. So we're not expecting those data until kinda summerish but the big thing is for a lot of people. There was also the appeal of a single dose here. And i don't think we should understate that. And the effect on severe disease is big so the problem is gonna be the in the initial rollout. You really want people to take whatever vaccine. They're giving because being vaccinated is so much better than not being vaccinated. And that is part of the path to get in the world back to normal and public health. Authorities are absolutely going to have to articulate that now again because there's not going to be that much supply of this initially. They're going to have time for a learning curve right now. the demand for vaccines clearly outstrips supply. That's why you're hearing so many stories of people desperately logging on trying to get vaccine. What scott gottlieb used to run. The fda has raised the issue of you know. We're we're going to reach a point where the people who wanna get vaccinated we'll have been vaccinated and we're still going to need to vaccinate more people and that's when convincing people who are less sure to take vaccine in to take the vaccine that's available is going to become more of an issue last question briefly pfizer moderna vaccines are based on 'em a. What kind of platform is the johnson and johnson. When using this like theatrics annika vaccine is called an ad no virus which is a kind of virus that is used to the same kind of ideas marin a the instead of traditional vaccines were you inject the protein that your immune system sees and then learn to recognize an attack. These sneak something into your body that makes a lot of proteins. You make a lot more protein and then the body recognizes that an attack it in this case they're using this virus which is kind of a cold virus to sneak some genetic material in and that makes the spike protein from the sars virus which your body then learns to recognize and thereby has antibodies that attack the virus

Why it's great to have a few extra brains around

"The. Low You sound tired I sound tired oath David you sound tired I. Think I'm I. Think I'm good. Man You sound like you've been up for hours. To Siren our just now. An hour for half hour. I'll tell you what I'm tired I save late every night for some reason I don't want I don't want the work end just WanNa keep doing stuff. I'm are you like main were from? For what I do the beginning of the day and the end of the day of the two most productive. For me the middle of the day I get distracted. Pretty quick. Kind of the middle of the day is just sitting in my car talking soon, calls and texting people because that's my office at the shop. This is no service. Well, we have the Internet but. A lot of people don't have iphones which makes life difficult. So Can't talk over the. facetime audio. So if anybody wants to call me in a daytime call me on facetime audio because what happens is, I. Meet up with people are talk to a couple visited in the like you know I called you like ten times the other day you never answered I didn't even get an emmy, get the call the unless they leave a voice mail which most people don't do anymore I don't know that they called. It doesn't show up as a recorded miscall. So. If, you don't have an iphone. What you gotTa do is going get an iphone. If you want to pull me, do not facetime me I do not like facetime. Well it's facetime audio. It's. Early. I got yeah. It's audio over the Internet and the calls usually clearer but if you don't have an iphone. I guess we'll just meet at the next hang out. We had kind of a weird thing this week where the Internet went out at at my house on. Monday. And we were trying to do a bunch of stuff like we're trying to shoot this thing with a video on TV. and. We were planning on getting that video from the Internet but then the Internet went out and so we couldn't end up shooting the rest of this project video because we needed something on the screen that we couldn't generate, and then it was like you know what we need to use this tool or Rini did look this thing up and it was crazy when you realize all the sudden how much you rely on the Internet to do. Like Everything not just to do your job in general but specifically, this and this and this, and this is all connected. And plus a we were out of we were out Internet until yesterday afternoon into Wednesday afternoon I rely on the Internet to tell me how to think. Let's get. You would have been totally bored loss. Yeah. I. Wouldn't know who to vote for. Trying to think but nothing happens. It was weird last couple days just not have an internet at the house and just trying to. figure out things that can still be productive on that cell phones because that's usually an alternative from here when up. Larry happens from time to time I have pretty terrible cell phone service here for some reason I, don't know why never been able to figure it out But. Because I'm not Outta town in town but something about my house So it was working but not well enough to do. You like to send video files back and forth to. For being stuff so Yeah it was. It was kind of a hassle. It's definitely first world problem like Boohoo, I didn't have Internet and couldn't do my Internet job for two days. Yeah. I know but it is strange when you have people working you know we're all in the office when we're like ready to do work and then we just of after go well, scope play soccer will wait a couple of days I don't know like. And then it turned out that after the guy came yesterday to fix it. I thought I just assumed that it was outside the house because nothing really changed here. And oftentimes people will mo- over some. You know cable line it's exposed somewhere in the neighborhood and whatever my internet goes out for flowers. And it turned out that there was a cable line in the ceiling of my office that I moved over. To make it extend somewhere else for something we're doing and I guess something on the inside of that line broke. Or like something 'cause it was just creating this noise within the cable network and was actually taking down the. The that couple houses near US taking down their Internet access says, my cable was creating some feedback something through the I don't know maybe he was. You know it's funny that I have a cable we buried like an in ground cable I. Took I told you that we broke it. The backhoe guy broke it, and so I spice it my buddy, my buddy. Ryan, who helps me around the house he actually spliced it but there was like about two inches of straight wire that wasn't. Twisted inside of that little plastic coaxial. Thing. That separates them an each. This is eight wires. Each one of them is twisted around each other. Like a little a cross shape extrusion. That keeps them separate. So we had him twisted together at work for a couple of days than Patrick, my electricity friend Kay by his like, yeah. The incidents at work and I'm like at work finally biggest nes- just going to give you it's going to give you enter you know intermittent he was not you got you got an so I ended up buying the couplings in the mail in the female and they did he goes yeah. Those wires needs to be twisted for the for the Internet to work. And I I honestly didn't believe him. Okay. This is true. This it's wires connected, and then when I connected it all get when we connected altogether he goes. Yes he works now I was. Just. Like two inches of the wire were like untwisted and then pigtailed together so that we could make the connection but once I cut both of those pieces of wire off property click connection and that worked.

Hospitals Facing Coronavirus Are Running Out of Masks, Other Key Equipment

"Are dealing with very critical shortage. Shortage is not just a protective equipment. They're also facing another huge obstacle. There are simply not enough supplies like cotton swabs to conduct the Coruna virus tests themselves. Cnn's Drew Griffin reports. How did the United States end up in this position with a desperate shortage of corona virus tests a shortage of supplies to administer these tests even a shortage of protective equipment for medical workers? The US government knew the virus was coming back in the beginning of January on January eighth when the CDC published an emergency health advisory on a reported cluster of pneumonia of unknown origin in Wuhan China. Medical experts tells CNN. The trump administration failed to act at this critical time. What we see is the lack of preparation over the last two months has now put us in a terrible position in late. January the first. Us case of Corona virus was identified in Washington state but while Chinese officials began locking down the city of Wuhan. President trump was in Davos Switzerland telling the world that China's problem would not be the world's pandemic we have a totally under control trump barred most non US citizens from flights coming in from China but behind the scenes. Mistakes were already being made as the numbers climbed a thirty five thousand cases worldwide the CDC was creating its own corona virus tests a slower process that included sending the test of public health. Labs to make sure the test would work those public labs found out the test was flawed so they immediately reported that and CDC began an investigation very quickly but more and more labs as they were verifying this through. The coming days also found the same problem but three crucial weeks testing was at a near standstill while the CDC tried to fix the problem and the US health system was flying blind the virus spreading across America and US. Health officials had no way to test for it that kept us from having visibility on domestic transmission of the virus for weeks and weeks and weeks when the CDC's new test was finally fixed ready. There weren't enough to fill demand. This letter shows public health laboratories begging the FDA relaxed restrictions and allow them to create their own tests. It happened within days but in a race to contain it the virus was well ahead by March. Six there are a hundred thousand cases worldwide and more confusion from the administration. Anybody that wants to test can attest. When the president said these words across the country shortages were everywhere today the shortages of tests include just about everything needed to administer the test there are shortages on many pieces of it. Public health officials. Say it just didn't need to be this bad two years earlier. The White House made another potentially dangerous mistake laying aside the pandemic response unit within the National Security Council though the White House says the same rose exist just under different titles. The team President Obama had bolstered to combat global pandemics after. Abol outbreak was gone. Critics say that trump administration decision hampered efforts with corona virus. I think he made a slower and it made us more prone to mistakes. Jeremy Conine Dyke who used to run foreign disaster assistance for. Us aid says all the shortages from testing to swabs to masks can in part be traced back to that one decision. Beth Cameron who under Barack Obama ran the pandemic response unit says. There is no doubt that well we have gotten more out of this at the office had still been intact. I think absolutely the president who alternately said he didn't know anything about disbanding the pandemic team and also defended it now denies his corona virus. Responsible has been anything but perfect. We were very prepared The only thing we weren't prepared for was the The Media Drew Griffin CNN. Atlanta healthcare workers deal with a shortage of testing supplies. The FDA announced today it has approved a new corn corona virus tests that can deliver results in forty five minutes the company that manufactured the test says it will begin shipping out the task next week. I'm joined now by Dr Meghan Ranting. She's an emergency physician at lifespan which is affiliated with Brown University. Dr Anne. Thank you so much for joining us. How significant development is this new test? This new test is honestly a potential game changer for us. My emergency department like hospitals across the country are increasingly filled with patients with symptoms. That seem like corona virus. But we can't test so the best we can say is we think you have covert nineteen and we're either going to admit you to the hospital or send you home and tell you to self quarantine it will be so transformative to be able to actually test patients the same way that we do for flu or other illnesses to able to tell people if they actually need to quarantine and then to make decisions that can help us see equipment for the patients that we do have to hospitalize generally very very significant to the largest cities impacted by corona virus. Dr Ready we're talking New York in Los Angeles now say doctors should prioritize testing for healthcare workers and the severely ill besides that they won't test unless it would significantly change the course of treatment. Does this new strategy makes sense to you. So it's tough. We simply don't have enough tests so it's just like we're doing with masks and gowns. We have to conserve tests to that. We make sure that we have them for the very sickest people. It's not just New York in Los Angeles that are doing this. It's actually the practice it almost every hospital in almost every state across the country right now. It is far from ideal. It is not the way we should practice medicine. But just like we're using masks right now. We have to ration are testing which really incredible so if large numbers of people still aren't being tested. How do we know how bad the situation is? Because presumably there could be thousands hundreds of thousands maybe even more of a lot of people walking around with Corona virus absolutely. I suspect that in my state as in most other states the numbers that are being reported are orders of magnitude lower than the actual number of people who are infected. We are sending most patients home from the hospital or doctor's offices without tests. Were getting the test on those really sick patients but if you are I came into the hospital. We most likely would not get tested again unless we needed to be hospitalized so we are absolutely under counting the magnitude of this epidemic. Zoo interesting story here. A New York surgeon and mother of two whose husband is also a doctor made a plea for more protective equipment on twitter writing. This don't make an orphan out of our two toddlers so bottom line Dr Rini. How dire are these shortages at hospitals all around the country right now? It is truly dire. That is a perfect word for what's going on. Listen we're all used to using isolation gowns? There's something that we use to take care of variety of patients who come into the hospital but never I've been physician for almost twenty years now. I'm never have we been told to reuse this equipment? It is puts us at a huge risk potentially puts patients at risk. It is exhausting and terrifying. I mean the number of steps that we have to go through every time we go in and out of a room with putting on a mask putting on a face shield putting on a gown putting on gloves seeing the patient stepping back out and then doing each of those steps again in every time you take something off. You're in danger of contaminating yourself and then instead of just throwing out the mask or throwing out the face shield. We're being told clean off the mask. Clean off the shield and it in a paper bag and then put it back on again before you go see the next patient there these series of steps where we could get infected? Which then puts us at risk. I have well over a dozen colleagues across the country who have already tested positive for cove nineteen fellow emergency physicians and nurses. And it's simply because we do not have adequate access to protective equipment and we're being told to reuse the equipment that we do have. So how worried are you about your own wellbeing Dr Rini so I am concerned? I'm hopeful that I'm relatively young and healthy and I'll be okay but I've had discussions with my family about if and when I should separate from them. I have friends who have sent their kids to limit our houses. And I'm personally told my parents that I'm not going to see them again until this outbreak is over because I don't want to risk infecting them. I think it's a matter of time in less. We increase the number of masks and gowns available. It is a matter of time until most frontline healthcare workers are infected. We

"Seven hundred w w it's coming up in about five minutes here. The very latest with req- chino at ten thirty five Annely Martin from cincy lifestyle on the show talking about what's up this weekend things to do around. Cincinnati and stuff she's done. Largely I'm against Xanthi comes in and talks about this. Every Friday it has to do with drinking. It just usually usually what happens and by the way, the weather this weekend is gonna look good too. So other than the fact that maybe a wet this weekend. But feeling finally in the seventies now, so you can put away the snow shovel. I said so it's official right now. Trying to get my mind, and I'm sure you are too around the Brian Rini story. Brian Rini was a guy that twenty four hours ago. We had no idea existed. Brian Rini is the man who posed as Timothy pits in the then what six year old who went missing back in two thousand two and he said that was the guy. And here's what's interesting about this whole story to is. They've now interviewed the. Man purporting. I don't believe anything anymore, by the way. Now, it's official. It's over I should've learned my lesson. But it is he's pressure said he has been doing ready for this quote stupid stuff for as long as I can remember it said, he's just got out of prison last month being paroled. He did some time in prison in and out several times the most recent being for going to a model home in the realtor how four hundred thousand dollar house and then return neighborhood later, telling neighbors he bought the house and was having a moving in party. Well, he didn't own the house did about thousand dollars damage, which probably pretty easy to do in in a model home in in subsequent was arrested for that. So he's been in trouble with the law a lot in his lifetime. But even his brother said is that stupid stuff? He's doing his I can remember this is a new level of stupid right there. Simply because it just it revictimizes the family. Can you imagine being the pits and family in back in two thousand two? Dingley Amy pits in the mom and this having some mental issues corner. The husband she was becoming more and more detached they were headed for divorce because allegedly she wouldn't get help and took young Timothy out of school that day that fateful day. Check them out early eight thirty in the morning in took him on. What was a field trip and went to Wisconsin, dells, amusement parks, and water parks and had a great time went to the zoo bottom toys and clothes, and then said in her suicide note because she killed herself a couple of days after this that she had left Timothy with a family friend that you'll never find him again. But he's entirely safe. Now to me, that's the other cryptic thing. Here that's going on onto is did she kill her own child. But a lot of people around her said she would never do that. Despite the mental state in which you was and yet if they're the case left him with a relative never find him again, whereas relative, and why hasn't he surfaced because at six years old, you kinda know what's going on. And you have a memory at least certainly of. Of the loved ones you'll have on special your father. He had a really good relationship with that. The the most part obviously is opening those old wounds and giving the pits and family hope after eight years because they have held vigil for eight years. Now, some people say, hey after Keppel, I you know, he's probably not with us anymore. And there's got to be some closure there. You know, missing persons, declaring them officially dead, the pits and families not done that they want believe he's still alive, and they continue to say, well, this is not this time. But he's gonna come home someday. Can you imagine being the family and thinking after eight years he's been found? And then coming to learn rather quickly that this is not the case. And I'm sure the FBI is told local authorities at once they once they started working the case realizing who this was that once they saw him said. Yeah, this is not this is not who he says he is he's actually a twenty four year old man named Brian Rini and right away, they told and probably why they told the family not to come to Ohio because you'd be wasting your time. And so even if even for a fleeting moment, the family had some hope that this was their their loved one their their child or baby finally coming home after eight years, not the case. But I guess the the million dollar question. Here's what the hell was Brian Rini thinking. If your brother says you've been doing stupid stuff as long as you can remember, okay? We have relatives we have friends people. We grew up with the people went to school with no Nancy person doing dumb stuff all the time. But this is not even this is not even like what what do you think in? This is harmful them breaking in a model home property damage. Okay. Yeah. People squad. They do that kind of stuff people still copper that's a real crime. But this is a personal crime. Because you're victimizing the family has been through so much already. Why he picked Timothy Pence's name out of the hat is is beyond anyone's, I guess grasp. But I'm sure the F B is working this one as we speak. The good news to is. We had a ton of satellite trucks, yesterday morning. The Senator three satellite trucks in front of the FBI. Cincinnati field office building behind us here. And now, they are pretty much all gone. So the media circus, at least is is over for the time being we have the very latest on this. And now we're just trying to figure out why. And where to the why moment, and I don't know. If you ever get a Y out of someone who does something like this, but for our sake, and hopefully our closure will have that coming up next is marked from cincy lifestyle. Scott Sloan show, what's up this weekend, and Cincinnati just ahead. Seven hundred w all this is seven hundred wwl w. Not allowed to talk for that attack. I saw. Slowly, it's Friday morning. "For. Me All right Wear jeans on. The beach Jared I forget. Sometimes, well the donkeys in Greece are their backs are being broken because they have to give rides to that Americans who come to. Visit I don't like that at. All Fix the back or yes I guess. So but I. Don't know here's. Something, that's interesting so five cruise ships a day go into the port of where Santa Rini is bringing twelve hundred Taurus onto the. Island every day every single day Top excursion I bet I mean that's probably the number one thing people want to. Do probably the number one and. So these poor donkeys are working nonstop you know what else, to have a, problem with just going to go, ahead and say. It the horse drawn. Carriages that you see. In big cities it it's hot. Typically they don't get a break they're pulling fast horses pulling those around in the big horses though they're like Clydesdale Let you see. Him they're all sweaty it'll get sweaty and typically they're in, places like Wilmington or Hot I don't, know Treated I've I've. Gone on them I would go. On them again I don't in my opinion sometimes those horses might be treated. Better, because they're constantly. Being because it's their jolly now don't know yeah I don't know I think we assume that to make ourselves feel better because I also use assume that of the fair or the circus that wasn't. The case found out that they were like the, most mistreated horses then although when I got a tour Wilmington. Recently. I think they told the horse was like a rescue horse okay they. Found malnourished nursed back to. Health and put right to work It was big and strong then but it's up and down. The streets with the cars and then you, know and they? Don't like. It I don't. Think so can't imagine you you enjoy having cars combat you all day okay yeah their blinders on. But, you're right they. Would send coming but just don't I don't support I don't know enough about it to be honest I've done it before it can be very romantic refund for your family but if it's hurting the. Horse I don't want it to be a part, of that and I am some would say a little bit. Overweight. Slightly so that could.

"Here's how rini remember said i was planning to go to a school out in ohio but reggie started encouraging me to go to a school that might start a women's team because there wasn't much competition for the cornell women rini says it must have been difficult for her sister to start the program at cornell but from her perspective watching from afar it looked like fun and so wretched i went to boston for the ecac finals for the men's hockey and boston college beat cornell and i said i'm going to go apply that school i think that might be a place i could start a team and that's honestly the rich i went to post in college i ran this version of events by reggie she says she doesn't remember but if her younger sister says it it must be true but rini bakers soon found that boston college which had only become fully coed three years earlier wasn't ready for something as radical as a women's ice hockey program rini approached the athletic department and they sent her to see a woman she might have been the head of the women's sports programmes a her for say was bobby petta counting realizing now she really felt as though i wouldn't get any interest i told her that i would start some organizational meetings and come back to her with a list people that were interested before long rini had compiled a list of twenty five women who wanted to play ice hockey there was just one problem none of them had any ice hockey backgrounds most of them were figure skaters so i read in the school paper that your first few weeks of practice were just basic skills and hockey knowledge is that fair that's very fair.
