"After hurricane katrina decimated orleans. You mean bush's vacation to make me do stuff. The lack of response floored him. And his anger became a catalyst for nineish kneels next release Years zero their fifth studio album was released in april. Two thousand seven only two years after the previous one clearly. Trent was motivated. And it showed. Because this wasn't just a concept album. There was a video game websites scavenger hunt and potential. Tv show slash film. Hasn't come to fruition yet. he's crazy. I became fascinated. This took up a good chunk of my research really. Because i don't think he actually have listened to your zero year. I'll give you my thoughts on zero after it. No i'm not gonna. I'll give you my thoughts on your zero after this. This is also weird. Time for me because two thousand seven. And i didn't pie. Physical album actually illegally downloaded which apparently attorneys like. He's like whatever that's fine. I was really into my chemical romance around this time. So i didn't really have time for all this immersive shit into your zero. Yeah that's fair but also this is when i went to ireland and got really indie rock. So whatever like prime india. I had i was really into like rilo. Kiley and radio got into arcade fire. Oh yeah this was. Arcade fire's heyday. This was i think when funeral came out like a few years the bible. I didn't listen to that when i was still into funeral after funeral right. Yeah i'm okay. I will need anymore. Arcade fire and done anyway. Okay so the concept buckle up. This is a roller coaster. Ride that. I'm fascinated with the concept. Is that the year is twenty twenty two. The current theoretic government in charge has renamed years zero. As they claimed the us was reborn. After a number of massive terrorist attacks set supposedly by islamic extremists. The government distributes drugs in the water to keep people complacently apathetic. There is an underground resistance. Such trying to break the country..

"That sounds weird. We talked about how like sad it is that are like family time is spent the backdrop of Rilo Kiley, but that's what we've been doing lately. Well, that's good job will be their other albums are great to this was the one that was most pertinent to me. But like I think more adventurous was like the one that followed this and that one's really out of ton good songs on it off. Yeah. We've we've really enjoyed it and I think it's one of those where like, I don't listening to it. I don't know why this band wasn't like more popular. I mean, know they were certainly but like it feels like a band that should have off, you know made I feel like should still be a bigger deal for the music that they make cuz it's really good. "So it was actually while I was in college, but the one summer that I spent at home was my between my freshman and sophomore year and I one of my high school. Friends, I guess invited me with a bunch of other people that I've got the high school with to go cliff jumping at that Lake. What was it like? Oh Greyson. Oh great. Yeah, and I never had heard of it in high school. I was never invited to go I never went and I went with this group of people and we just felt like, you know, I got one day like a normal teenager. It was this one day where we like drank beers and we shouldn't have been drinking and drove off cliffs and and it felt like I'd you know, I never got another one, but that song is kind of linked to that day for me. Like I had that one and as I can think about all the days that I didn't have or I can think about that one. Just perfect day of feeling completely normal. Yeah, I will say the cliff jumping jumping is very day. It is it I wouldn't do it now and I'm glad I got away with it that one day I did. That's how I took it once and I would never do it again. That that's same here. I didn't jump off the really big one. No, we didn't we we we were on just one little Cliff. We didn't really go hardcore. Yeah, I do not I do not know. Yeah, we we on still buffering do not endorse cliff jumping out. So that is a better Lake though the other Lake that I remember hanging out almost Beech Fork Lake, which is 50% water and 50% carp and oh no car passes like, you know the fish. It's fifty percent fish. I don't think it's really 50% fish but it feels that way it's a lot has so many. There's so many carbs and carb freak me out. What is it about carp that freak you out? I don't I don't I don't know not that freaks you out..

"That evolution of like grunge into something that was more palatable to everybody, you know more widely appreciated and whatever that music is it still got kind of that raw like dog You can see like the the long hair shaking back and forth beating on the drums and the sweat flying off. You can still feel that but it's a little more restrained. Yeah. yeah, I mean, I think that like, you know so much of the music that I think is adjacent to this gets categorized just in D but it's like a you know independent I can literally be anything but then there is that element that is the best way to describe it because like when I listen to Rilo Kiley like it has elements of like I don't know like the Beach Boys like there's something very like I'm old-school palatable rock and roll about it, but then it definitely has some experimental elements definitely has some pop sensibilities definitely drifts into grunge territory, you know different albums, maybe some like Punk territory and I like that like music that doesn't like I get bored when a band does the same thing on every song over and over again the bands I typically like or ones that do have that kind of That breadth of you know different things to offer. I mean it had like even on this album like, you know, the singer switches up. It's usually Jenny Lewis, but they're a couple songs that the other than the the guy I think his name, but he he writes his along with Jenny Lewis and like I it's it's always kind of jarring to me when one of his songs come on, but I also appreciate that they have that like varicose veins you mix it up that so I know there were a lot of other projects that the people involved in the band. Did like different bands that sort of I don't want to say split off. I was trying to read about the history of them to try get a feel for like where did they go?.

"I can see you know, it definitely sounds it connects me with that the time period that it's from I feel like it's very like I feel that it took me back to those years not only because of its association with different shows that I watched back then but also because like it feels like the music I enjoyed back then and still do to this day. Not not just Iraq, but there was something about I could identify the different instruments and isolate them as I was listening. There's something like I'm not so polished about that that like I miss sometimes it reminds me of days like going to shows music like that takes me back to like being in some like dive bar somewhere watching some local bands play, you know what I mean like that feeling and I could like in my brain if I wanted to wage. Focus on each different instrument and hear them individually in addition to the way they come together. Like I feel like some music is it gets more polished you lose some of that and then sometimes I'm like even know is that a computer sound? I don't know what that sound is, but I like there's something about that music that connects me to those to my youth and those years and that that's very like strong to me. It does we talked about an artist. I had brought several months ago. I think at this point Dodie Clark who started a YouTuber and you had mentioned that the connection is some like 90s early 2000 artists and this music to me was very reminiscent of her music just because it has that mix of like when you really listen to the lyrics like there's some darker stuff going on there, but the music is often necessarily in that same tone. I know what you mean about listening for the different instruments because it it's all very like it's not just about the beats and the like the moments and the stuffing out whole thing as a piece not about like a catchy chorus or whatever..

"He was starring in bed the park and he was directing and it was very awkward cuz they had broken up but it was when he was fine in love with Joey. It's such a great episode. Anyways, that's cool. We can just have Dawson's Creek again. That's you know, don't have to talk about the thing that I brought the table. Let's talk about dogs is not I'm going to talk about Dawson's Creek. I went to talk more about Taylor's albums. Yeah, unless about Dawson's Creek. Oh, I see what you're doing here. But before we do, let's check the group message. Okay, ma'am, so more. You know, I've been I've been working from home a lot and trying to keep Charlie on schedule with her home schooling virtual schooling and not when you're working from home. It can start to feel like if you don't go if you don't get in a routine and like go through usual morning motions it can it feel really disorienting and it's hard to get that headspace off for me part of doing that is like getting dressed for work at home, you know, and but I want to feel comfortable too cuz I'm playing a lot of roles wearing a lot of hats right now and betabrand dog. Best paint yoga pants are the perfect pants for this moment. I I always wore them to work when I was going to work like in person anyway, cuz they were super comfortable. They look nice. They are dress pants. They just feel like you're wearing yoga pants all day long, but especially right now for working from home where I'm transitioning between a lot of different roles very quickly all in the same space having these dress page prints from betabrand makes it really comfortable and easy. They're very functional. They feel like workout gear but they're not they're made of wrinkle-resistant stretch knit fabric fabric off. That's that word Fabric and they're perfect for long workdays weather at the office or at home or running back and forth between one roll to the next they got you covered..

"That's true. I was amazed when I first heard this band name because that was like, huh? Well, I thought that was mine. My name my nickname who else goes by this can't be trial. Oh, yeah, like who else goes to go by this everyone for reference for someone not in our family. Everyone has always called me Rilo instead of Riley. Yes, my phone autocompletes to rile. Oh really? I tries to change Riley to Riley. I guess it's just like a like a cuter version of Riley cuz it's the same amount of syllables. Not only make it shorter. See I thought it I thought I'd call you that cuz the band but I don't know. I really just okay. Yep. Well, and it came through it. Also we I don't know because we shorten Taylor your name to talo. Offense true and I've heard people make the attempt at sidlow before that doesn't make any sense. But I've heard it said no. To know did no good. No, it's just said yes, it's easier since the bad said no said no choice years came from that file you had saved on the family. No one wants to tell anyone there that righty boo a new righty boo. Now they said it's just like that. That's what he would say. Yeah. I got have this one girl in elementary school and she tried to get tabi going and I just was like, I don't Like you and I don't like that never talk to me again. Hey, baby, or even get the bestows. There are no Bees involved in my name. I didn't understand anywhere else just was what she decided that that's what I should be called it. did not like it Taylor. "That does I mean it sounds delicious. I'm sure it's like Charlie like would love it. But I gave it to her actually just cuz I mean, don't want it felt bad that like waste it but I gave it to her and I was like enjoy this because it is the only one you'll ever see. Any what is enjoyable about that like how how often completely ignored like cold chicken nuggets fried food is not good cold. I don't know I try to I am not like I am not the same, you know, end-all-be-all of parents by any stretch by at least try to like balance out like my kid needs some vegetables and some fruit. Yeah, they need some protein in their name something, you know, like here's some grains like I try to like balance it all something they want barley child. Yeah the game. Amino acid the kids need and the vitamins they need and where they all come from. Like I try to force the yeah. I know you don't want to eat that vegetable, but you need more vegetables eat the vegetable. Like I try that and this is just an extreme of give me that I can't you know, what you've done those you've implanted the The Forbidden Fruit & Charlie's brain. She's had it once you'll never happen again. So the day Charlie turns 16 can drive herself places. She goes right to Walmart kids that Lunchable says, I got you Mom eats chicken nugget and goes. Why did I wanted? I wanted to know. Now and she's off at college and she gets a little homesick. She's going to go the store and get herself some chicken nuggets innards and think of you often our lives in my parents chicken nuggets and nerds. You know, that's fair. That's us that's just an hour food. We probably be chicken nugget AC or a bunch of nerds say who's the chicken nugget? Who's the nerd birth? Think I know yeah. So that's enough about Lunchables talking about lunch. We not actually actually we spent a whole episode once talking about lunch. Lunchables to I've talked about them too much Taylor. What are we talking about day? We are talking about the the Rilo Kiley band their album the execution of things..

"Yeah as opposed. I guess duetted with a video of someone making a very intricate like well presented well prepared. Like here's my child's lunch for today and they're like getting them nicely. It's all like fresh stuff and there's like shapes involved and it's all a beautiful. It's like one of those like really nice lunch boxes that has all the little things and like bento box. It's divided with a video of them. Yeah standing there like stuffing like oatmeal cream pie Sedlak a Lunchable and like in one of them. It's like a white claw dropped into the list. Like here. Yeah, I've gotten into those. Yeah Sydney's are real mom. Is that what it is? She she doesn't she has a long time for the the the stuff that real moms have time for I try. I actually I I kind of shot myself in the foot with that because I my God, I found Lunchables gross as an adult, which is ridiculous. I'm sorry. I can't I ain't nothing inside a Lunchable yet. I will fully endorse their deliciousness. Thank you. I understand this perspective and I thought I would share it. We got Lunchables for Charlie the first time and I was so excited. I was like, yes, I get to eat these little tiny circles sort of meat and the crackers that are so cold. They're always so cold the crackers and the cheese and I get to eat it all and I'm so excited and then I ate one I was like this tastes bad and Charlie didn't really like it. So I started making Lunchables for her which I mean, it's not like fancy right just like cutting little things out of like slices of cheese and exactly I would cut cut the turkey two circles and cut the cheese into little squares and give her that and my homemade Lunchables. That's just all so I could that's a baby charcuterie board sweet. That's what your child off exactly but I but turned my children off on Lunchables cuz.

"Hello and welcome to still buffering a cross-generational guide to the culture that they yes, I am rileigh smirl. I'm Sydnee McElroy and I'm Taylor smell. So I discovered Tik Tok just now right before it goes away forever going away anymore. It's been saved. It's life saved by a very probably illegal and suspicious deal with the American government greatest rated by our president. Of course, I'm sure either him or some of his friends made money off would be my guess. Yeah. They Tick Tock had to be bought out within 45 days by an American company because of course, we can't trust anybody else. It's not American of course off and but as a requirement of the deal the president announced that an unspecified educational fund would receive a $5 million-dollar donation from this company so that the government was benefitting off of oh, is it his it's Trump University. Is it Trump? I actually I don't know if it is. I don't know what the the fund is, but that's yep. Described his new 1776 thing or whatever that yeah program. That's meant to fight the awareness of yeah. Well, you know the problem with American history has been that it doesn't tell you enough about white people right like up till now. It really hasn't talked about white people under so framed in a more heroic light. I think historically we've haven't really, you know done that right like calling like the people who like first started our country like we should call them something like fathers like the founders of the founding like founding fathers would use terms like those that have never been used before in American history. But also like why are why are us white people always point out paying out to be the bad guy and his wife guys. We're obviously I'm just kidding. Please, obviously were being facetious so and take that out of context and put it on the internet somewhere like a soundtrack. That's not know. I would we are the bad guys always. Yes. Thank you. It's great to hear your EIB. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah, and then I wanted to ask I might have missed it. so forgive me if I did but I don't think the phrase crooked Hallelujah peers in the book, and so I was curious where the title came from you're really good at titles to the each each story or chapter has its own title. They're great someone asked about the book title you know I do not know where crooked Halloween came from like it was just it was sort of plucked out of the air early on in it always felt like the name of the book. Yeah it it really just it was always there. So I don't know where it came from. But it it felt right and as I worked on it, you know for a long time Michael Open, you know I talk about other titles with people friends, my agent and I was always open but nothing ever felt rife the book it's perfect. So thank you. Thank you so much I'm I'm so glad to hear that because I never felt like this is obviously the title I just felt like it. It feels right? You know sort of a gut thing and I was open to other gut things but not not nothing happen. So. Thank you. It's fun in. It's funny that you say that I'm good at titles of the stories that story chapters. Because I feel like they're they're incredibly hard for me. So yeah. I feel like I'm not but I feel like if I was I would like everything would be untitled it just I don't know but they're such a nice entry in. Do you think you're very good at titles? Thank you I rely a lot on. Songs and it's something I'm thinking about I just wrote a playlist for large hearted boy and so I was thinking about how much I use. Both popular. Songs for from through the through the generations, because the book spans decades as well as Gospel Hymns, and so I think that in not all of the titles spent most of 'em you can. You can feel that influence coming through. There are some touchstone songs in the book for sure and I wanted to ask if there were. Different pieces of art music or other books are other writers who Who are what you see in conversation with your book whether that's aspirational or influential or research or just kind of what other work you see in conversation with Sure. That's really really good question. So I think that the Rilo Kiley Song. Better son daughter. I feel like the hats I feel like just seen her arc over the course of the book that that that that Song could be like just soulmate you know i. feel like if just seen had run across that song at the right moment in her life, maybe her life would be different because maybe she would understand that she's not the only one carrying dislike love that's waited with shame in terms of how she relates to some members of her family. I just feel like that Song I. Love that Song for adjusting and so that's why later on there's you know there's You'll be on us. You'll be brave one of the stories that's about Justin going home care for her ailing mother comes from that song. And I feel like that song it's beautiful in that it captures You know one moment it just has like your heart singing the next minute it's breaking it. So. So that's one song that I would love for book to. Be In conversation. With. In terms of books I was Just I feel like in in great way riding my way. Toward Love Medicine. That was we urge six. I think it was called a novel I. Think of it as you know, I, I as a reader and a lover of the book thought of stories although clearly it's telling in has a an arc over the course of a book in its telling a bigger story. So well, I, just I I love short stories. So that's how I always thought. But. That's a book that I read over and over and that I thought a lot about as I was trying to figure out how to. Both maintain the integrity of each. Individual. Story as its own complete movement, and then stitched that together to do something like bigger and I I don't know not more ambitious because I don't think it's easy to write a short story. So, I went back to love medicine again and again and other novels and stories and linked collections. Dylan Landis book called nor normal people don't live like this, and then also just reading interviews with urge Rick and you know just trying to soak up every bit of wisdom and grace that I feel like she has. In I mentioned earlier, trying to figure out where to start the book and that's the those two books. were great. Great inspirations and and really useful for me Dylan Landis who wrote normal people don't live like this something she wrote of Stud of her study of love medicine which she also too I. There's just like a generation of people writing wanting to write stories who are studying love medicine as a text or should be I think I'm but put the engine of the book. Front is something that Dylan Landis has written about love medicine. You know and that's something that I worked on. So so long trying to figure out how how to start the book in a way that both introduces..
