Well, that's good job will be their other albums are great to this was the one that was most pertinent to me. But like I think more adventurous was like the one that followed this and that one's really out of ton good songs on it off. Yeah. We've we've really enjoyed it and I think it's one of those where like, I don't listening to it. I don't know why this band wasn't like more popular. I mean, know they were certainly but like it feels like a band that should have off, you know made I feel like should still be a bigger deal for the music that they make cuz it's really good. "That evolution of like grunge into something that was more palatable to everybody, you know more widely appreciated and whatever that music is it still got kind of that raw like dog You can see like the the long hair shaking back and forth beating on the drums and the sweat flying off. You can still feel that but it's a little more restrained. Yeah. yeah, I mean, I think that like, you know so much of the music that I think is adjacent to this gets categorized just in D but it's like a you know independent I can literally be anything but then there is that element that is the best way to describe it because like when I listen to Rilo Kiley like it has elements of like I don't know like the Beach Boys like there's something very like I'm old-school palatable rock and roll about it, but then it definitely has some experimental elements definitely has some pop sensibilities definitely drifts into grunge territory, you know different albums, maybe some like Punk territory and I like that like music that doesn't like I get bored when a band does the same thing on every song over and over again the bands I typically like or ones that do have that kind of That breadth of you know different things to offer. I mean it had like even on this album like, you know, the singer switches up. It's usually Jenny Lewis, but they're a couple songs that the other than the the guy I think his name, but he he writes his along with Jenny Lewis and like I it's it's always kind of jarring to me when one of his songs come on, but I also appreciate that they have that like varicose veins you mix it up that so I know there were a lot of other projects that the people involved in the band. Did like different bands that sort of I don't want to say split off. I was trying to read about the history of them to try get a feel for like where did they go?.

"That does I mean it sounds delicious. I'm sure it's like Charlie like would love it. But I gave it to her actually just cuz I mean, don't want it felt bad that like waste it but I gave it to her and I was like enjoy this because it is the only one you'll ever see. Any what is enjoyable about that like how how often completely ignored like cold chicken nuggets fried food is not good cold. I don't know I try to I am not like I am not the same, you know, end-all-be-all of parents by any stretch by at least try to like balance out like my kid needs some vegetables and some fruit. Yeah, they need some protein in their name something, you know, like here's some grains like I try to like balance it all something they want barley child. Yeah the game. Amino acid the kids need and the vitamins they need and where they all come from. Like I try to force the yeah. I know you don't want to eat that vegetable, but you need more vegetables eat the vegetable. Like I try that and this is just an extreme of give me that I can't you know, what you've done those you've implanted the The Forbidden Fruit & Charlie's brain. She's had it once you'll never happen again. So the day Charlie turns 16 can drive herself places. She goes right to Walmart kids that Lunchable says, I got you Mom eats chicken nugget and goes. Why did I wanted? I wanted to know. Now and she's off at college and she gets a little homesick. She's going to go the store and get herself some chicken nuggets innards and think of you often our lives in my parents chicken nuggets and nerds. You know, that's fair. That's us that's just an hour food. We probably be chicken nugget AC or a bunch of nerds say who's the chicken nugget? Who's the nerd birth? Think I know yeah. So that's enough about Lunchables talking about lunch. We not actually actually we spent a whole episode once talking about lunch. Lunchables to I've talked about them too much Taylor. What are we talking about day? We are talking about the the Rilo Kiley band their album the execution of things..

"I talk to daddy nerves blurted it out for her lucrative feet down to stop the swing Justin couldn't read her mother's face but she wished she could put the words back in her mouth swallow them for good. Thank you. It's great to hear your EIB. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah, and then I wanted to ask I might have missed it. so forgive me if I did but I don't think the phrase crooked Hallelujah peers in the book, and so I was curious where the title came from you're really good at titles to the each each story or chapter has its own title. They're great someone asked about the book title you know I do not know where crooked Halloween came from like it was just it was sort of plucked out of the air early on in it always felt like the name of the book. Yeah it it really just it was always there. So I don't know where it came from. But it it felt right and as I worked on it, you know for a long time Michael Open, you know I talk about other titles with people friends, my agent and I was always open but nothing ever felt rife the book it's perfect. So thank you. Thank you so much I'm I'm so glad to hear that because I never felt like this is obviously the title I just felt like it. It feels right? You know sort of a gut thing and I was open to other gut things but not not nothing happen. So. Thank you. It's fun in. It's funny that you say that I'm good at titles of the stories that story chapters. Because I feel like they're they're incredibly hard for me. So yeah. I feel like I'm not but I feel like if I was I would like everything would be untitled it just I don't know but they're such a nice entry in. Do you think you're very good at titles? Thank you I rely a lot on. Songs and it's something I'm thinking about I just wrote a playlist for large hearted boy and so I was thinking about how much I use. Both popular. Songs for from through the through the generations, because the book spans decades as well as Gospel Hymns, and so I think that in not all of the titles spent most of 'em you can. You can feel that influence coming through. There are some touchstone songs in the book for sure and I wanted to ask if there were. Different pieces of art music or other books are other writers who Who are what you see in conversation with your book whether that's aspirational or influential or research or just kind of what other work you see in conversation with Sure. That's really really good question. So I think that the Rilo Kiley Song. Better son daughter. I feel like the hats I feel like just seen her arc over the course of the book that that that that Song could be like just soulmate you know i. feel like if just seen had run across that song at the right moment in her life, maybe her life would be different because maybe she would understand that she's not the only one carrying dislike love that's waited with shame in terms of how she relates to some members of her family. I just feel like that Song I. Love that Song for adjusting and so that's why later on there's you know there's You'll be on us. You'll be brave one of the stories that's about Justin going home care for her ailing mother comes from that song. And I feel like that song it's beautiful in that it captures You know one moment it just has like your heart singing the next minute it's breaking it. So. So that's one song that I would love for book to. Be In conversation. With. In terms of books I was Just I feel like in in great way riding my way. Toward Love Medicine. That was we urge six. I think it was called a novel I. Think of it as you know, I, I as a reader and a lover of the book thought of stories although clearly it's telling in has a an arc over the course of a book in its telling a bigger story. So well, I, just I I love short stories. So that's how I always thought. But. That's a book that I read over and over and that I thought a lot about as I was trying to figure out how to. Both maintain the integrity of each. Individual. Story as its own complete movement, and then stitched that together to do something like bigger and I I don't know not more ambitious because I don't think it's easy to write a short story. So, I went back to love medicine again and again and other novels and stories and linked collections. Dylan Landis book called nor normal people don't live like this, and then also just reading interviews with urge Rick and you know just trying to soak up every bit of wisdom and grace that I feel like she has. In I mentioned earlier, trying to figure out where to start the book and that's the those two books. were great. Great inspirations and and really useful for me Dylan Landis who wrote normal people don't live like this something she wrote of Stud of her study of love medicine which she also too I. There's just like a generation of people writing wanting to write stories who are studying love medicine as a text or should be I think I'm but put the engine of the book. Front is something that Dylan Landis has written about love medicine. You know and that's something that I worked on. So so long trying to figure out how how to start the book in a way that both introduces..

"My favorite like collection of musicians to ever exist. Barsukov had death cab harvey, danger. They might be giants. Rilo. Kiley maps and atlases. Fanta. Graham, was on there and the long winters were also Barsukov records. And I think a lot of like Seattle rock bands. Rilo. Kiley was very guitar forward and ferry and. Just sort of like you know loud and melodic. It was led by Jenny Lewis. Who has gone to have an incredibly successful career since then we saw her in concert at uh city limits we did. Very. Fun. But I. I. Sort of became aware of her music through Rilo. Kiley like I. Think Those folks did I actually started listening to Riley, because somebody told me that the that that Jeannie Lewis was in the wizard she played by the I can't remember her new girl girl. Girl. That goes across the country playing video games. and. I want to just start by playing one of their biggest songs, which is off the album more adventurous called for Fox. Snow Mr. I didn't know this. It's that song after very like Obscure Bible verse. It's also like one of the catchier songs I've ever heard about like a really unhealthy physical relationship and I like there's something about that Jackson position of it being a very fun. Very poppy. Very memorable. Catchy. Song. About like kind of a toxic situation between people that feels very RILO Kiley and feels very like of the music from that era. There's just something really clean about that song like. Ginny. Lewis as always is like incredible and she can alternate between these very kind of. Versus to just like wailing through the chorus, but I also feel like the guitars of this band are. So incredible everybody played guitar not at the same time like everybody was a multi instrument multi instrumentalist. and. So that's why it's very. I feel like I could do all the guitar parts from his song like mouth. And I think is indicative of of of the Seattle like rock music that was coming Jonah, and thinking about it like listening to this ban and listening to the music again, this morning, and then also looking back over the history of bands that I've talked about on this show I. Always, it was always a subject that I was interested in this idea of when I am older. I'm talking about like when I was in my teens or whatever looking forward like when I'm older, what is going to be like the crystallized. era of music or the crystallize like. The Canon of music. That is like my the music that identify with the one that I like really think established my like core musical..

I was so frantic as a kid like all I wanted was to be like I. Dunno I wanted to like. Make friends who came from like a really tiny school, and so like I would go out and I would go to shows, and all I wanted to do was like. You know I would go see RILO Kiley at. It was kind of like we were this. Let me. Show you how this is dawn again. I think the common denominators that we just really loved. Like the La Music scene in like we really supported it and like. We'd love going to shows and again like our high school was really really small, and you know there weren't a lot of kids that like the same music as I did and was. As in batch raided as I was with like going to see like live music in l. a., and so my friends were kind of like we're gonNA, go like to us either show in downtown because they're doing like waiting for Goodell and I'd be like that's cool, but like I really wanna go see like Elliott Smith. "All about like, isn't robots, basically telling you that you're never going to have parents and never. Right? Like they're a couple has a son who's ill and in a coma. So he replaced the sun with the robot, and then the other son wakes up and they have to get rid of the robot. And then he goes on this odyssey, right? The very end, isn't it? Like all of humanity is dead. Trapped? Yes. And they're trying to say like, well, you're never going to be happy again. Yes, pretty much the ended up you love been dead for two thousand. So I just testing. Blu Ray player in KU up. Is there like trying to read but then watches? And she's, she goes, what the fuck is this. Really percents greater. Is is cool. I haven't seen it since I remember I've went the day at game out, hey, hey, but I shot a scene for that movie and then they. Did I ever tell you about how I shot a scene for a, I had like one or two lines, and it was super exciting that got to be set with. Was it like? I'm time. Time, Brian, same times it was down at like an advertising agency, like in Long Beach or something. We were down at the spruce goose dome there. So they probably had some offices or something. I remember seeing you walking like to your trailers, like we were all out. I was with like. What's his name is how many times have we've been like I daily running into Steven. Spielberg was estimates pillar because you're trying to think of? No. Anyway, it was a bunch of us. We had like one or two lines each, and it was a scene where like the main guy, the guy the the William hurt character is like talking about robots or whatever. And we're all like scientists who work there sprinkled throughout. We each have a couple of lines, so so hold day on the set watching deleted scene on the Blu Ray. I got. No, like depressing. Begin six months later. I was at space land of all places seeing think a Rilo Kiley show. And this guy who is background on on the in the scene who I had kind of gotten to know that day came up. He's like, hey, man, where were you? Wait what you mean? He's like, we redid the scene. No. And then I ran another guy from that scene and he also was like, yeah, heard they. So at least I wasn't the only one, but also they recast a lot of people or the just reduced the scene. So it's like five guys sitting around rather than twelve based five guys on five? Yes. And then they started for girls restaurant. Anyway, anyway, I always thought that movie was really weird and but you you were watching it with a grudge as well. I kind of wasn't though you really, hey, whatever who I mean bombed, but also was it was a pleasure just to work with Steve. Right? But it would have been like a line so it wasn't huge. Remember line like, hey, are you a?.
