"Who wants to work on it in my hand. Shot up so fast Was like i have to work on this. I'm obsessed with your oven hanson So i worked on the reading for the movie which really to this day is one of the most special days of my entire life. We were in a very tiny room with ben platt. And all these like amazing broadway actors in movie actors and the producers and pasted paul. The composers were there and the director was there and the read through the script and ben sang songs and it was like insane. I mean it was just really. I have to say one of the coolest experiences of my entire life in a moment that you really feel like this is why you do what you do and also you now. My parents always told me growing up. Like you don't need to like it doesn't matter what you do but you should do something that helps people and i always felt like i wasn't really doing that as a casting director. I don't know how i'm helping someone as a casting director. But then when i thought like wow if i am part of this film or this. Tv show or this deatrich piece. That's like giving someone the emotional release that i felt when i saw that show like you are helping someone. That is a way to to be there to help someone. If you're just a small part of this project so It was a really really special process for me to be a part of that reading and I think the cast they got is awesome. And i'm so excited to see at the trailer. Looks so good and your i definitely can't see it in a theater. No i am not i. I mean gosh. I should have gotten kicked out of the broadway theatre because i was like doing that kind of cry. And it's okay. I'm not done talking about it so when you do that..

"But i feel like other people's voices need to be heard too. Yeah absolutely do you feel that. And i know this might not be a fair question for you. Because i'm asking about like hollywood's problems in general but do you feel that especially over the past year. That progress is being made or that. It's talking about progress being made. That's a really good question. I think that progress is being made. I do think that it's not being made fast enough. I do wonder though if that's just because so many productions have been shut down. Broadway just started to come back so many. Tv shows films. Were put on pause. I don't know if that's kind of what's slowing down the process. But i would like to see it happening faster but i do think that process that progress is being made but slowly yeah bull. I'll take some progress. And i think i think that's something you know especially because people were home all year people really were able to think about what's going on and see what's going on and and i think a lot of there's what's called the casting society of america that's after people's names it says. Csi the casting. Society of america is a. I think it's i think it's called guild. Not a union. But you know. I think they've been hosting really really great open calls for i. They did a native american actors than we just did. African american actors and then we've done actors with disabilities and like these are huge calls that casting directors all over the country can sign up to be a part of and we watch people audition and these are people without agents in. There are so many talented people. So i think the csa has done a really good job of trying to put new people and fresh people and fresh ideas in front of casting directors and giving them exposure and there's also been a lot of training going on for casting directors and learning. You know terminology and It's been a really big learning curve..

"Keep foundation so happy shopping j. forgiving back. Now let's get back to hollywood. So i wanna talk about that negotiating process. Since you said you like that. My guess is you've probably seen it all right. You've probably seen a lot so when it comes to people's writers or any requests is there anything. Are there any good stories that you can share about either crazy steph or interesting snuff or you're just like i'm laughing and i can't tell you. Is there any intelligence. Something like I'd worked on a project and we cast someone and she wanted like You know she was like water like evian water or something. I don't know she's like some specific type of water in her dressing room and we were like absolutely no problem like we can do that. And they're like and it needs to be law in long stemmed glassware. You're like okay. I'm so there's just like funny things but nothing too crazy. I mean it's really nothing. Like i'm trying to think too because most things like we don't really get into like the crazy food writers and stuff like i imagine beyond say hasn't whatever you know like four because there's craft services on tv shows. There's nothing like to too crazy But it is the details of everything you know it's been i just got back to new york this week. I was for the past six months living with my mother. Because i was like not staying in new york for the winter in my leg. Tiny apartment anyways she. I said to her when i left like was it interesting. Like what was the most interesting thing of of like living with your daughter who you haven't looked listen. She was like seventeen and she said you know it was really interesting to see your job. I had no idea that you do the negotiations. I thought you just watch auditions and pick who you want in the tv show. Which i think is the general idea of what most people think..

"That great audition and you're like oh goodness i think i found the person there is no better feeling and then when you pass it along to the director and the director says i love that person. And then you passed onto the network. The network is like this person's great. I mean all we want is for the person to be great so there is so much pressure on these actors. Everything's out of their control. Which i mean as a control freak. I could never be an actor. And i just in awe that people are able to pour their hearts into these additions in be so vulnerable and really create such beautiful art in each audition and nothing could ever come of it. I mean it is just. It's really amazing. And after such special people in are just should be valued and especially. I think over the past year when so many opportunities have been taken away from them. The have pivoted into other industries into other fields. It's just really it's it can't be said enough of how special these people are. And yeah you just really wanna hug every single person you know and you just want to like get everyone work because everyone just wants to succeed in wants to like you know it becomes so much more than living a dream when you have rent to pay and you have groceries. Divide like this is their life and you just wanna help people succeed. So are you also the person who has to do the rejection's like if someone has gotten pretty far in the audition process but then there's a no at the beginning you're that person. Yeah i mean which is really the worst. Luckily the only thing. That's a little bit better. Most actors have agency. You have the conversation with an agent. And i don't have to like tell the actor directly 'cause i just i honestly that's why i could never be agent. I don't know how would have that conversation. Everyday with people because ari gold did not have a heart yet. No every goldway. You've all right. Yeah which is not as agents are evil agents are actually really amazing people and are able to support actors and encourage actors and then communicate to the casting directors who these people are in agents as well as casting directors but really are out there finding talent and finding these exciting people and then agents also have to be able to look at our breakdown in look at their roster of clients it kind of imagine which of their clients would be. Good for one of these roles. You know But yeah the rejection is horrible and actor just emailed me today of like because we he auditioned for a role and yesterday castle in an ordered him and he emailed me he was like hey just wanted to check in. And you're just like. I like you so much i was like..

"She's so cool and interesting. We set up auditions. They used to be in person. Obviously now everything's done By self tapes which means the actors are really videotape themselves and sending them in. I mean really proxy all the actors who have been doing this the past year or so. They have gone above and beyond creating literal film studios in their apartments. It is just a crazy. I mean the it's really. I don't know how they've done it. It really is. It's very impressive. Anyways we send agents the script and also what's called the sides where we cut down the script to the guidelines that they'll read in the audition so might be like the two big scenes that the actor has in the episode. That's what they then videotape in send in their audition and then we watched the auditions like hours and hours and hours of auditions and writing notes on them and saying oh my gosh like this person was so great but they're actually better for the other role so then we tell the agent own. They're great but can they do these sides in an audition for this role and we start getting these auditions in watching them. People that were really really excited about and then we create a link in settling of those auditions to the team. So for this show. We were sending it to sarah and cindy on also art director for the show Who was wonderful. And then they watch them they write back and say this is who we are. Actually we like this person but we like them for this role and then it's just a huge collaborative effort between the whole team Any you just work. it's really the casting process. You just keep working the list and you keep really detailed notes of you know we love this actor but she's not available because she shooting bridge again so we can't have her for the show and then it's like oh. She was just killed off richardson. We can have her now have her audit. You know what if you like so. That's really the administrative skills is keeping these massive massive lists of everyone's whereabouts and then once the whole team like the creative team decides on who they want. They then have to go to network approval so they have to then go like for this show to cbs. Like mr and mrs cbs. As i said And then they really the network in studio also have to sign off on this person so it really is. it's very very collaborative. And it is like to get someone cast on a show. There are so many people that have to sign off. It's real it's just. It's unbelievable that shows are even made because it's just there's so many steps to get something done and not even just from the casting process like everything like that it's really. It's really unbelievable. i. I'm in awe that like Things are even able to be done because there are just so many steps in people really have to be open to collaborating open to hearing other people's opinions open to working together to trying new things you know it really isn't art which ultimately like you can't lose sight of that. Everyone working in this industry basically grew up as a huge theater. Nerd is an artist. Loves the arts in. There's a part of you that like still is like that in as much as this is your job and it's serious there's a lot of fun enjoy in the process and then finally when someone is castrol. Oh my god. We cast someone in this role. That's crazy and then they show on tv and you're like how is that even possible that six months ago. I was watching their audition that they were doing from their bedroom. That is so crazy. So that is kind of the process in between like inbetween..

As long as i live like his like one of his songs as my alarm clock. Right this very famous. Broadway actor also very handsome anyways. He comes in in auditions for me over a number of years and just always amazing but unfortunately for one reason or another like never really works out. And then a couple years ago i had the opportunity to cast him in a tv show and he got the role and it was just like and then finally. After that i was like. I really have to tell you something so embarrassing. I've been a fan of you my entire life. This is like making my whole career that cast you in the show and he was very very nice and like i think a little freaked out but basically happy wait. Are you not gonna tell us who it was. I can't i can't that will you tell me when we stop recording. I'll tell you okay but but really that like things that feel like very full circle to me I worked in a little bit on theater. I've done a bunch of shows at sam's warehouse which is in dumbo brooklyn But most of my career has been tv shows or i really started out doing commercials as well. So it's mostly been on camera. Okay so will you walk us through the process from your perspective. let's go. let's say. I'm going to probably like box. Even giving this an example you can correct me. But let's say the The director of kevin can fm selfie. You are we. are we saying. Ever people saying the f. word i think they're saying f k. Amc ardently scrapped the whole process of cash. Okay so let's use this as an example so you get the call saying hey. We're doing this pilot walk. Just walk us through everything that happens next. I want to get a really good feel for the auditioning process and what that looks like. Is it like a cattle call audition of just one person after the next reading the same lines What kinds of notes are you taking like. Give us the full rundown of what it looks like totally so okay. In march i did one of these whereas talking about before pilots were. Were just casting the lead. So i worked on a pilot in march of on sarah cooper of tiktok fame my god. "This is going to end soon. And then i gotta find my next thing. You always have jobs lined up. Is it easy to get an extra one author. A lot of demand what that looked like prior to covid. I was working at a really big company. New york where i was a full time employee there so i had a very like lovely job and they. It was a big company that was always had show. So i would sit at my desk and they would come to say like okay. Your show ended. Here's the next year you're starting on which was great. Unfortunately that company also had a lot of theater and so It was a tough time with kobe. So since so in march i of march of twenty twenty. I went out on my own as a freelance casting director for the first time in my life which was very very scary but i have to say it's been great like i really have worked consistently since that point which i you know was not something. I was ever really confident that i would be able to do. But i'm really happy. And i feel like yes. There's definitely the anxiety for like a anxious person like myself of. Oh my goodness. This shows ending the first week of june. What am i going to do. The second week of june. But i have to say everything has kind of fallen into place Which i'm very hashtag. Blessed about By yeah it's definitely you know so many of my friends are actors and i saw them live kind of freelance lifestyle and i know people who are freelance and other industries and i never really got it. I definitely have so much empathy for that lifestyle. Now i also feel really really supremely grateful that i was forced to go out on my own because i would never have done it unless i was like you know given the kick in the which i was in. Okay i love it so when you have a lot of friends who are in the industry specifically actor friends is not everhard hard. Do you ever get calls of like. Hey can you get me in. "This is the catch roundtable. John catch mckee's sunday morning. well minneapolis. That was one big thing that the american people have to face today to talk about. It is ricky cleveland. She's a cbs legal analyst. He's a former defense attorney and A former prosecutor. She has a well rounded idea of. What's going on the morning. ricky cleveland. How are you kind. Good john nice to be with you. Were you surprised at what happened. Well we're actually was not I have never seen a case involving a question of excessive use of force. Police officer that was more than moments. That was more than a flash that got out of hand. This is the only case where we have a full videotape of nine minutes and twenty nine seconds of the conduct of derek. That which is why. It's such an extraordinary case. That riveted the american people the evidence in this case as opposed to so many other cases involving the question of what is appropriate force or excessive force for three officers. He evidence in this case had so much video plus the bystanders and their emotional reactions. Plus expert after expert about cause of jeff the medical experts but more important or more i would say ads import certainly the most support this the video but as important worthy amount of police officer witnesses including the chief of please of this department. The minneapolis apple is police department. Who testified against eric. Chevron i could not see how there would have been any other verdict then a guilty verdict. I attend to agree with you on that Do you think there's any influence on. The jury had to walk out in front of demonstrators and and eventually then the demonstrators would find out who they are and what their names on was there any fear factor in the jurors hearts. I think john there can be no doubt that the major issues for peel on this kay's are going to revolve around two sides of that question. The source side is prior to trial the amount of publicity in this case including the protests. All last summer. Involving the death of george floyd at the hands of derek chauvin. You had all that publicity before the trial Culminating actually in enormous publicity locally if not initially about twenty seven million dollar settlement to that the city engaged in joined the Jury selection to the floyd family and then we bookend to that. John is exactly what you are talking about. Which is the fact that these jurors throughout their tenure since they were not sequestered had to Go to and from their homes Where you had buildings that were boarded up in case There was not guilty verdict. And there's and the downtown there Especially around the court. Has it looked like word. I mean are people who were on the ground from cbs news and all the other news networks talked about were looking like a war zone so did yours are people who have the same feelings reactions and any of us would about What them what. Kind of influence that. Like have on their deliberations and i think that Despite the overwhelming evidence of guilt against derek chauvin that you will have these two issues on appeal that is pre trial publicity being prejudicial and during the trial the atmosphere that's your setsuko church If there was a case where a jury should have been sequestered. It was this one should. Were you surprised that the judge made a convert that what was the exact commitee should appeal. Or you probably wouldn't appeal. What happened was there was a moment. at the very end of the case just before the jury went out Or at the time that the jury went out when the percents Attorney nelson came up to the court and had asked to declare a mistrial and The reason for that according to the defense lawyer where's that congresswoman maxine waters had come to the minneapolis area and had made a statement to other demonstration..

"We expect the prosecution to rest at some point next week and it will be the turn of the defense and the defense is looking john for one juror. It's all they want is one juror To have a hung jury in which case they could force a plea bargain rather than the second trial And the prosecution we all know need twelve jurors to say they have proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt. So next week At this time we may have a different opinion or we may not it will depend on what types of witnesses the expert witnesses that the defense may call but boy. Oh boy it would be hard to be any better than the prosecution's experts who were really phenomenal. I if this is a prosecution very solid case. So i do not envy the defense lawyer eric nelson for his task. Because he's doing his job as he should and we. We have another minute or two like we said.
