"And this belt never changed. This is the same while actually the W the logo might be different, but it was always like this. I remember when they changed it, it was like WrestleMania 14. Is that what it was? Is when the belts changed in 2008. The heavyweight changed the next night for Austin. This is incredible. Once again, talk about the belts like I wore this belt so many times and it's just like holy shit. There it is. It's very cool. Any memories in such you ask me a question. And any memories about the first maybe the first time winning this getting this championship. So the first time I won it was from China, which was very hard. She was a very special talent, obviously, but she was really hard to work with because she had, once again, gone so far so quickly and wasn't really properly trained. Plus she was under the umbrella of Triple H at the time they were dating. So it was really hard to work with her in the ring and outside of the ring. But when I was a kid, all I wanted to do was when the Intercontinental Championship. I used to have because Ricky steamboat was one of my guys and I could never figure out why Ricky steamboat never got to fight Hulk Hogan because Ricky steamboat is a way better champion than Hulk Hogan is. And I know he could beat Hulk Hogan. That's how you think before you know the business work. But in my mind's eye, we used to have a sign out in front of the high school and it said, you know, congratulations to Dave Johnson for winning the skate skating meat or whatever. My eye was always like, congratulations to Chris herb and for becoming the WWF Intercontinental Champion. So that was always my biggest goal. So when I won the title, even though it was against China, it was a little bit kind of not what I was always expecting. It still was one of the greatest moments for me because I got the internal championship. It was very early in my run too, probably within 6 months of getting to WWF at the time. So that was a great memory to get this, but the biggest memory I have is Christian and I had a ladder match for this title in Portland at the arena that we were just that. And I went to grab the title and I remember holding this ladder match works. We're grabbing it. And Christian pulled the ladder away. And when he pulled the ladder away, I remember like, oh, my hands on it. And I landed the latter landed up. And I landed on the ladder. It's basically anally penetrated me. And it bruised my Cossacks bone, which is the little bone on the end of your tailbone, which is never heels. It's ever ever ever. And I go, what do I have to do, Doc, because just have to wait and see what do you want me to do? Put a cast on it. There's nothing you can do. But I just need a tail? It's a little weed, little tail at the end of your tailbone. And I just remember literally seeing the title and going, oh, that was great. The crowd's super into it. Oh. Ah. And I remember regal when I came back and said, I saw what happened. It went right up your arms, didn't it? That's a good regal. I can see them. And you're in the ring for months after that taking bumps the next day. I couldn't even sit on the plane. I had to kind of sit on my knees because my, you can't sit, you can't walk, but you still got to show up and make towns, brother. I tell them my memory guys all the time. You fight twice a year, shut up. These guys did it every day. Back in the day, 350 times a year, double shoots on Sunday. There's no way in hell I'm bringing this home with me. Oh, wow.

"It's grilling JR on Facebook. You heard Jim throw out his handle earlier on Twitter. It's at JR's BBQ. And speaking of JR's BBQ, if you go to JR's baby Q dot com, that's the main event. Not just the main event mustard, not just the chipotle ketchup, not just the two types of barbecue sauce, but now JR's red ass hot sauce is in stock and shipping and buddy, I talk about it every chance I get every single show for years now. The all purpose seasoning. For the Super Bowl GM, we had wings. We had turkey. We had chicken and all three had one thing in common. JR's all purpose seasoning. It's hard to beat, man, that JR's BBQ dot com. Yeah, it's a great tag team. You got going there, Conrad, or that protein, and all purpose seasoning. That offered a season just been a star. And once people discovered it, it became their go to. And we got small bottles, we got big bottles, and Conrad's been nice, because he loves it. And he uses it every day. He seemingly, but I really appreciate everybody's business. The thing that we're selling a lot of right now, JR's original barbecue sauce is our number one seller. Red ass hot sauce is doing really good for a brand new product that's doing great people are trying it. They're like it at the responding to it. And of course, in the all purpose seizing, I can see it just sitting out on somebody's counter. Yes. It's always there, so when you're cooking on your stove top, for example, you've got a little chart there. And so it works out well. So JR's BBQ dot com. I think you'll like the gift boxes. And you know, we're not that far removed from Father's Day. That's right. So it's coming up. It's going to happen, whether we are prepared for it or not. But we'll shift your stuff and make sure that your Father's Day recipient gets as good. And I guarantee you there will be a more respected please to get that they're going to receive that what they're going to get from us. And we work every day. 7 days a week, we get where they're shipping. So your orders are not going to linger or lag. So we really are having fun right now. Business is good. So give us a shot. Dot com. You don't cost nothing to look. There you go. I love that. And I want to throw this out there too. I don't know, I think a lot of our folks less than the best. Probably have some sort of viewing party when they can. It's fun to watch wrestling by yourself, but it's even more fun to share it with some friends and family. And I often do that for the big pay per view event. So like AW has their big revolution show coming up. And of course, in a couple of months, we're going to have the big WrestleMania show. Yes, you can order your pizza delivery, but you know what's even more fun creating an experience.

"We'll do a few of those questions. Adam arpan wants to know, why didn't we see Ricky transitioned to Hollywood at any point? Being an attractive and charismatic man in a time when Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal were huge hits. Feels like Ricky could have been a hit too. What'd you think of that? Might not want to travel. Okay. We kind of talked about that since the area. He wanted to spend more time with his family. But, you know, could Ricky had been a successful in that arena? Probably. Good-looking guy, great body, smart, intelligent, articulate. Maybe it just didn't direct in that way. Or maybe he stuck his toe in that water and didn't like it. I don't know. But family would be involved in the answer in some shape form or fashion. Yeah back Jones wants to know what a good mouthpiece like heenan or Paul Lee have been able to carry Ricky into the heel turn or do you think that too would have fallen on deaf ears? Well, it would have helped. Yes. It would have helped, you know, Heyman or our coronet type thing could have been a difference maker, no doubt. It just didn't occur, but it could have been a difference maker. And he would have needed that at least. And we're not just talking about a manager or talking about a main event level, cornett, Heyman, heenan, like manager, not a ham and egg. Right. Somebody really, really good. Mark Cyrus wants to know, had steamboat come to mid south. What he had fit what cowboy wanted in a top guy. Oh, hell yeah, 'cause he knew that when he booked, he's going to be there. Yeah. And he's going to work his ass off. He's going to make everybody he's going to get guys off their asses because he's an athletic overachiever, so to speak. And he would have been a baby face. He had a great baby face. And because he had all the face traits at watts coveted, so yeah, no doubt, he didn't have a great run there. One last one, and boy, you want to talk about an exciting what if fantasy booking? This one comes to us from Adam arpan. Here's a fun hypothetical. What would have been a more entertaining feud steamboat versus undertaker or steamboat versus Bret Hart? Not judging based solely on wrestling, but the entire package, man, I didn't even think about Bret Hart versus Ricky steamboat, but can you imagine that would have been incredible? That would have gotten my vote. Yeah. I don't feel the undertaker steamboat energy. And it might be there. They're both are so great. And so students of the game and great pros, could they have made it work? Probably so. Right. But the Bret Hart one feels good. Feels right. And those matches would have been clinics without question, Connie. Well, I'll tell you what else feels right. And that's watching old wrestling with you. You can do that. And you can watch one of these famous trilogy

"Right. That was the issue. And that's the issue that really, I think, made disillusioned Ricky. Do not deserve better than this. Right. Yeah, you do. But we don't have it for you right now. Boy, here's the question. I'm sure a lot of our listeners have been waiting on me to ask, Eric asks here, was Bonnie steamboat as hands on on Ricky's career as we've been led to believe. And if so, was it detrimental to Ricky's growth as a reliable main event? You know, I don't know about that. That's just thinking of deep, maybe. She was president because we used little Ricky as a, I don't want to see a prop. But we're using him as a part of the act. Right. And mom need to be there to take care of little Ricky. It's obviously right. Yeah. So I think this to me, but I didn't find her to be overbearing or anything along those lines. She was a concerned mom or a concern wife. And she played that role. I don't think any differently than just about anybody else would. And maybe more lady like them than others. John Sawyer says, it would be interesting to see who could give the dragon a good match with today's talent and any promotion, who do you think would give him the best match? There you go. It's hard to beat that answer. You want a booking idea come to JR. I got one for you. That's a good one. It may not be worth a shit, but I got an idea. How about, how about Ricky steamboat and Kenny Omega? That's where I was going. Yeah. I mean, you know, Adam Cole. Yeah, there's a lot of, there's a lot of talent. And they would all love it. Can you imagine him and Randy Orton? That'd be awesome. Yeah, that would be another classic. Francis Reyes says, what was the one thing you can say about Ricky the person that we don't know about him? Well, we said a lot on his show. Yeah. We say things that are seemingly logical and common sense oriented. He's on time. Big trade, Detroit. He never had, he never athletically allowed himself to have a bad match. He pushed himself at every stage of his career to get better. So I think a lot of just his work ethic is what I was always impressed with. I just, again, the overall disappointment that he did get a bigger farewell or more hugs on the way out, still concerns me. Peter D wants to know, hi JR, does it hurt steamboat's legacy to have never been a heel? No, I don't think so. I think there's, I think, I don't think so whatsoever. You're going to make steamboat a heel. You booking with a baby face. It's over. And you need to let him do that Lou test technique, work it as a rough baby face. Again, you know, little things you can do that people don't look at today, so that would never work. That's two old school JR. But I got cheating to gain an unfair advantage is still cheating to gain an unfair advantage whether it's done by a 100% heal or a baby face that's being forced to respond in a more aggressive and violent or physical way. And you might get by with that, but you're turning full fledged baby face or he'll excuse me. It wasn't going to happen. What I'm going to work, it could happen, but it wasn't going to work. People like that character. They believed in it and I think sometimes at the price of his own attitudinal frame of mind and presentation that him pairing up with his wife and son didn't do him any favors at times. He got booed. Right. He got booed because he was a family man. Imagine that shit. How do you justify that on TV or booking or anything else? The best way to do it is you're not going to change the values of the fans and they want to add it to and they want to vinegar, et cetera, et cetera. And I get it. But if you're not going to change their mind, you got to get away from that. So you remove the mom and the little boy from the package, but that didn't happen on a Tommy way in my view. But I think sometimes you could look at it and say, well, it didn't do Ricky any favors as a baby face to get booed loudly on national television at the side of his son and wife. How do you, as a broadcaster, how do you justify that? You don't. I think that's where some of the Bonnie steamboat questions come from. I feel like a lot of people say, well, the reason they kept doing it is because Bonnie wanted to be a star. Bonnie wanted to be on TV. And I was there. I don't know that to be the case. I don't think that's the case, Conrad. I can see someone making an argument for it that didn't understand all the backstory. Right. It was an idea that was pitched to them. She didn't come to WCW and pitch that idea. Right. As far as I know, so consequently, it was an idea that came from the office and she got cast in that role, volunteered to travel her son and bring him into these arenas and so forth and so on with all his pump and circumstance. But she's got cast. Right. He got booked. Yes. And she fulfilled her booking. So in her idea and she leveraged to get it and either would do the astronaut. I'm taking my husband and my son and our ball we're going home. That never happened. Right. That I can remember. Maybe somebody's got a better story on it than me about it. I don't remember it happening. I just thought at times it felt awkward to try to that a babyface is getting booed for those reasons. Well, sad. Will wants to know, always wanted to check out more of his work, do you have a favorite steamboat match? Oh, mercy. I said this earlier. I don't remember ever seeing a bad one. Obviously, the first flare steamboat match in Chicago because it was new and fresh. Was really spectacular. There were some matches or some tag matches in WCW, and I want to say the polish for Austin and pillman that I thought were really, really good. I thought Ricky brought out the best and those guys. Both often and pilgrim of students at the game wanted to get better. Not a bad guy to be in the ring with. You want to get better than Ricky steamboat. But some of those tag matches in WCW were really really good. I might be thinking too of arn and I don't recall the art and tell you aspect of that as much as I recall the arm and buggy eating aspect of that. But he never really had any stinkers.

"Did. Athletic greens dot com, forward slash JR. Let's talk about what's next for steamboat here. He's then involved in a ten man tag team match the night after. It's on Monday Night Raw of course. It's CM Punk and Jeff Hardy and John Cena and ray Mysterio and Ricky steamboat. Taking on Chris Jericho edge Kane, Matt Hardy and the big show. They go 17 minutes and man, what a collection of talent in one ring, just one Hall of Famer after another, we get one more match though. It steamboat and Jericho in a featured match at backlash on April 26th and Providence. Steamboat again holds his own, but loses in about 12 minutes is gonna work a handful of house show matches in the months following and he's also gonna work with Jericho Sheamus and Drew McIntyre. And then in June 2010, about a week after wrestling on an FCW show, he's teaming with his son Richie for the first time, and there's a pretty serious situation after steamboat is legit injured by the nexus faction during a segment where they beat up steamboat and other legends on Monday Night Raw, steamboat winds up being hospitalized for the brain aneurysm and his survival was much more touch and go than anyone even knew at the time. But as we know, of course, he made a full recovery, but listen, it was an honest mistake. It was an accident. I think David otunga gave him a powerbomb, I believe, and you would think, man, I've seen a million power bombs. What could go wrong? Well, it can. This ain't ballet and boy, he was hurting for certain. They had to remove part of his skull, I believe, here, Jim. This is a serious injury. I dots a major, major bullet that could have killed him. Yeah. As simple as that. We're glad he didn't. He lived to tell the tale and as we know, he returned to the ring for one more match. November 27th, 2022, just a handful of months ago. He teamed with FTR to defeat Brock Anderson Jay lethal and Nick all this and the return of the dragon pay per view in Raleigh, North Carolina, steamboat would get the win over Jay lethal with the figure four of course lethal was doing his macho man cosplay that day as black machismo. So it was a little tip of the cap to the history of his career. He never officially said that's his last match, but a lot of folks think that might be his last match. someone doing the best macho man tribute he could possibly get. That's a nice little way to go out for mister steamboat now. Yeah, I was. And the quality mask, good talents in there, FTR is a great team. They may be the very best tag team and all the pro wrestling right now. I know that's going to piss off some guys, but you know, just one guy's opinion, so don't get over it. We blessed some great teams in the AEW and any way you want to judge what great teams are, you find yourself talking about FTR. And I saw I'm a big fan of their work, their work ethic, which saw more often, quite frankly, biased. You want to see your favorite one of your favorite tag teams to get after it. But the match was loaded with talent. And all of them had the same agenda to pay homage to Ricky steamboat. And I thought that was as cool as hell. Fantastic. I want to mention he does briefly come back as a trainer in NXT and he's really probably more of a brand ambassador. And then he got released in 2014, but I've always wondered, why doesn't he work in a backstage capacity with WWE or AEW like it feels like? Man, you want to talk about sitting under the learning tree. Who better to tell you how to be a baby face than Ricky steamboat now? Yeah, and learn the fundamentals of wrestling as well. He's a great proponent of that. Teaches fundamentals first. The nuances of being a baby face second, you know, you don't put the cart before the horse. The horse has got to go to work. Got to go in, I don't know, he's just, it may be him, Connor, I can't speak for Ricky, but it may just be that he doesn't want to deal with the politics and the drama that can oftentimes exist within the realms of pro wrestling. It can be a giant pain in the ass. And there are so many arguments and heartbreaks and misunderstandings and stuff that are completely avoidable. Completely avoidable. But somehow or another in our business, we find a way to not avoid them. And I think steamboat may just have his lot. I'm done. You know, so showing up and doing a show every now and then is a whole lot different ball game than being attached to a brand a full time. There may be it. I don't know, have a good question for Ricky sometime on a on an ad free property. But I don't know. I think maybe he just got tired. Maybe he's burned out. And look, he's not, he's not a spring chicken. He just had a 60 something birthday, didn't he? Yeah, he's earned 70 later this month. There you go. I know how that feels. Let's do a handful of questions, and then we'll wrap this one up. Shady white deacon wants to know as Ricky steamboat returned to the NWA if dusty is still the Booker. That's a good question. Huh. Well, it would depend on the cash and creative. Well, there you go. If the money was good and Ricky, like the creative of which he would be contributing to, I'd say yes. Eric Martin wants to know, what do you think the plans would have been for steamboat going forward? Had he stayed in WCW in 1989? Well, that was an issue, you know, we didn't have anybody ready for him and that's when you have no depth and you have very few people over as we'd love to use. That's what you find yourself in. What's next? And there wasn't anything next of funk was next for flair. Who was next for

"It. So it was a big hit to say the least this weekend for me. And Wakanda and I are both singing the praises of food. You could understand that we know what we're talking about. Let's take a, let's take a look. Try as you might, you can't beat our meat. It's backyard butchers dot com, use that promo code JR, I'm telling you, you're gonna be glad you did. So here's the big idea that Ricky steamboat pitches to Vince McMahon when he comes back in 1991 to the WWF. Quote, I'd never had a match where I worked as a heel. When I started in 1976, I was always a face. And the reason for that was the heel would always lead the match. Now for me to graduate to be a heel, most times you started out as a face, and then you got good, transfer over to a heel, and you were the guy in charge. So I never had an opportunity to work as a heel, although in the WWF in 91, I expressed my desire to work as a heel, and the response I got back was that it would never work. Said I was the consummate baby face, and it would probably hurt my career. I tried to push them to do it hard and said, let me go into a mask. Let me go under a full suit and cover up my body. I won't throw any chops. I'll just kick and punch and I'll be a heel. Then the big surprise. If we can carry this thing through after about a year or so, have somebody finally take the mask off and hopefully the response we would get from fans will be, oh my God, all this time it's been Ricky steamboat, but they wouldn't buy it. That's an interesting idea, Jim. Do you think it could have worked? Well, it's all about execution. It wouldn't be my first choice, Conrad. You know, I think that pat Patterson's instincts are around the money. Ricky was a baby face. That's what people wanted to see him as. And so and I understand and appreciate Ricky's desire to repackage himself and to hit the reset, but I really do. But I just never thought and maybe I'm too close minded on things like this and even in the aforementioned and often talked about Austin turn. I just didn't feel it. And I think that's for Patterson was. He just didn't feel steamboat being a heel. And that it would work. And Patterson's so much influence events don't matter like that. That it was scary. So a pattern didn't like it. There's a good chance it ain't gonna happen. Steamboat has said they told him they were going to start him off slow and build him back up to the top of the card in a few months. Well, after about 6 months, he still in the opening or second match against guys like the Brooklyn brawler or Paul Roma or skinner. He's obviously frustrated and gives notice. And they ask him to do two stretcher jobs at the October 21st TV taping. As a reminder now, this is after he came in in March of 91, so now in October, he's asked to leave and given his notice and they want him to do two stretcher jobs for the undertaker in IRS, steamboat apparently refuses. He's fired on the spot. Of course I know you're not there at this time. You're on the other station. Are you hearing about this? What's the industry thinking of. His inability to assimilate, I guess? 'cause that's the way it feels from the outside looking in now. Well, the, I think, oh, heck, the dirt didn't travel as fast then as it does now. There you go. So it wasn't like a topic of conversation on the lips of everyone. But he heard rumblings. Right. And then anytime you have a talent, IE, in this case, Ricky steamboat that might be become available again at some point in the future. That does raise a certain level of curiosity. You know, is there something we could do with Ricky as the innocent coming back here? Does he really want to wrestle anymore? How much does he want? Of his own time as he wanted to vote to his career or are we on the other side of that now and he's looking to figure a way to exit this long-term career or not? So many questions has to be answered. But if you find out that a talent of his stature and his skill set may become a bad way to join your team again, one has to be interested. Well, they are interested. It takes a whole month and he shows up in WCW at the clash of the champions. Savannah, Georgia, November 19th, just like he debuted back in 89. He's a mystery partner. This time substituting for Barry Windham. He's going to team up with Dustin Rhodes and they defeat arn Anderson and Larry's biscoe that very night to win the tag titles. Made it feels like whenever it doesn't work in the WWF, just come back to WCW. If we're gonna put you in a title picture, man, right away. Well, that's the most convenient title they had. The tag team titles are kind of been floated around here there in yawn. And steamboat was renowned as a tag team guy, even though he was a former NWA champion and had that treasury with flair that we've discussed. But is the roots of Ricky steamboat as far as main event star level was as a tag guy? And I don't know how dusty was thinking. But, you know, the more that best it could work with steamboat, the better Dustin was going to become. That's the influencer guy has. So steamboat was influenced three other guys. The opponents and

"Issue with Ricky as some people's conversation. You know, I said earlier, I thoroughly enjoyed working with him. Because I knew I'd get honesty and I knew he'd be at work and I knew that he gives best effort and his skill set was just at one time. And WCW, I mean, there was the two best workers in the world. I thought were flared steamboat. And we had them. Right. And we had them for three pay per views. Like I said, the Superdome pay per view was a misguided and it's not good. How it's promoted was a joke and so forth. And to go sit in that building with four or 5000 people in a 70,000 seats, it domes stadium was a little bit embarrassing. No doubt. And the show was ill timed and I think they didn't go off the air to prematurely or something. It was not a good day at the office. But what was good was the story being told in two out of three falls that flair and steamboat told, especially if you look back at the first fall and how steamboat won the first fall with a submission. It's an incredible trilogy, go out of your way to watch it, but then after the Luger match, a great American bash in 1989. He takes a break. He's going to pop back up in the ring in 1990, working for some Carolina based indie promotions, and then he finally returns to the WWF in March of 91, and while they acknowledge him as Ricky steamboat occasionally, they're really trying to just call him the dragon. He's going to have a full dragon outfit as he comes to the ring and start breathing fire as part of his entrance and Vince even synagogue to Florida to master the fire swallowing and breathing gimmick, maybe this is what you were saying that a lot of his critics would say he's short on charisma, so they're trying to dress it up, but maybe this is taking it to the extreme if you're watching over on YouTube, what a visual this is and him in this silly outfit breathing fire. What did you think of this presentation? I thought it had a lot of color. Yeah. I've got my attention. But I didn't think it fit Ricky Steve that will. Personally. Again, I'm so old school too. I don't like changing things that are working and that are established and that people are accustomed to and like, they always like freaky steamboat. The way it was. Yes. So sometimes you wonder, are we doing change for change's sake or is there a better reason is this characterization going to make Ricky that much better? I say no in this respect. Like that picture with this showed everybody. That one there? That's a hell of a shot. That's a publicist dream. And a colorful and unique, different. They just very experienced on that suit. Are the gimmick itself as spitting fire, whatever? So I admire the company going to that extra mile, but they're just on the wrong road with steamboat. I don't think it worked. And I know some people that are more into these sports entertainment side of pro wrestling than not would disagree with me. And I respect their opinion. And I might be wrong. I just thought it was a little bit too much for Ricky Steve moat. And he didn't need it. Quite frankly, all he needed to do was to get him in the ring, ring the bell and let him do his work. Well, it's interesting, steamboat was game to try anything. He even pitched a different idea, but before we talk about what he pitched, I want to pitch you on an idea. An idea from our Friends over at backyard butchers. Hey, real question here, folks. If you could get a whole box of restaurant quality steak for the last than what you would pay at the grocery store, how could you beat that? That's what we're talking about.

"Where it ranks on the fun factor, those three 89 matches of flair and steamboat are right there. They're right there. Nothing's above them. The first one's an incredible pay per view, the shotgun rumble, which you can watch along with JR that free shows dot com this month. Casio is going to be on Conrad. We're bringing casio in at no expense very no expense. We're paying him in hot links. And he loves it. The second match in this flare steamboat trilogy is a two out of three falls match at the clash of the champions. It's going to be head to head with Russell mania 5. That one happens at the Superdome. We've talked about that one in the archives. And then of course, we'll finish up at wrestle war and Nashville in May. And of course, as soon as we're finished with this one, flare is moving on to work with the incredible Terry phone. These matches are, look at that picture. Such a great shot. Go check it out. Grilling JR on YouTube dot com. JR's facial to Eric's or to Terry Fox facial is just hilarious. On the heels of this trilogy though, it feels like we're in a similar spot because flair is once again back in the title picture. He's moving on from steamboat. He's now paired with funk. So what does that mean for steamboat? Well, not a bunch of return matches because now flare is working with Fox. So instead, he's going to challenge Lex Luger for the U.S. title. Which, no matter how we slice it, is a step down from the world title, and it's a step down from an in ring opponent, from flair to Luger at the time who was still maybe a little greenish. The great American bash is going to happen in Baltimore, an incredible show, July 23rd, at Steve mills going to lose by DQ, and then his NWA run comes to a close. And think about that now. He just came in in January, and here he is in July, finishing up. What was it that was what was steamboat missing here? You always go back to the two culprits, Conrad, the two Cash and creative. I'm not sure about the cash component. Ricky was being paid well as I recall, I would involve in the payoffs and stuff like that at that point in time, because the guys are essentially on salary. So that was something they would negotiate with their represents. They introduced themselves and whoever was running the company at that time. This case of late Jim hurt, so it just, it's always cash of creative. You can decipher suck it right down to that. That's the bottom bottom line. And I know Ricky was not pleased with this creative. How do you follow up on through the greatest matches ever with arguably the greatest pro wrestler ever? How do you follow that up? Right. It's an insurmountable odds to recreate magic with somebody else. And look, I have great respect for Lex Luger and the man he's from and the things he's overcome is health wise, he's a, he's a great success story in my view. And I think the world of him. And I think of him often. Because the journey that he's on in the ups and downs twists and turns. But there's no way it's not fair in Alexa say the same thing. You know, it's a step down for steamboat. Skill wise, the matches are not near going to be nearly as good. And the irony of it is, if we could just got through it, it would have made it would have made steam, but would have made Luger a much better pro wrestler. Yes. The more match time, the more in ring stuff, but Ricky did not like the direction. It was Anne, but look, what is she going to do? Who are you going to booking with? Comparative flair. Well, there's nobody that can do that. Right. So, and I'm not kissing players to ask the second kissing his ass, but he was a top of the mountain. There's nobody, it's made it tough, booking once. But I think also Ricky, you know, strong family man, I think he kind of probably I'm sure like a lot of guys and gals have some guilt when they're way too much from their children. That is her first responsibility, being a parent. Not being a baby face. So I think he got a little burned out. And he was ready to get off the road. I think as much as anything. And that's what he did. It's just amazing to me to think about his career in terms of when he's fresh off of the greatest WrestleMania match in history, two months later, he needs time off. It's never the same. He's gone several months later. Now he's fresh off the greatest trilogy. Anybody's ever seen and a former world champion now. He finally made it to the top of the mountain. A couple of months later, he's gone. If nothing else, our man was principled, he did it his way. And I can't help but wonder if that may be potentially hurt his standing in the conversation when people talk about all time greats because it feels like they always say, well, it's Shawn Michaels or Ric Flair. But man, if steamboat had worked continuously and not been so principled and taken some of these breaks and walked away when he felt like he wasn't getting a fair shake instead of powering through like flare more often than not did. He'd be mentioned up there with those guys. What do you know? Of course, yeah. A skill, build a bell, yes, Conrad without a doubt. Bell to bell, comparing steamboat of comparing many others a bus to vote would be absolutely erroneous. Not even close.

"Your finest performances as a broadcaster, like this is, it's a big stage for a lot of people. I mean, it makes this title mean more. It makes Ricky steamboat mean more and I mean, if you go back and you ask flair himself, he thinks that's about as good as it's gonna get. The Chi town rumble match. You can't pick holes in it. Yeah. As we all like to do in today's world, it was just, it was spotless. And it was one of the big thrills of my life. It still is. That's the thing about it is all these matches are called over the years. As many years as I dedicated to pro wrestling, nothing ranks above that as far as a one match. Pick out one. If somebody says, J I want to say a good example of your work from any era. That would be on the short list. It may be number one. Because I can't remember ever calling a match that I thought was more explosive, more spontaneous, more realistic, just psychology was spot on. Just absolutely amazing. So I'm still a big fan of that match. And look, every now and then, somebody will send me a copy of it or whatever. And I will, it's like watching, we talked last week, I saw we got some feedback on Twitter about Hollywood nights. And the movie that I love comedy. The guy tall Senate played the gator sardine. Ghana. And so it's just a matter of, I don't know where it was, but the point being is I think that fucking just about your memory starts to go. Ah, you're fine, Jim. I had a lot of things in my mind. I'm trying to cancel more than one thought, which is my fault. So anyway, yeah, it was, it was magical. And I, like I said, sometimes, and I told those guys this and I mentioned it earlier in passing, sometimes they're too flawless. Yeah. Sometimes it's just seamless. It's just music. It seamless. And I thought, well, maybe it needs a little bit of this or a little bit of that or whatever. Because we all look for things to change. And there's nothing about this match that needed to be changed. Nothing. I think I worked that match. I did all three of those matches in 89. I think Magnum TA and our partners in this one, I believe. And I did one with Terry funk, and I did one with bob cod, I think. So.

"First time, he said to me, I changed my plans. And you're not in them. And you'll be you'll be out of here in 30 days. Of course I had a 90 day out in my contract, so I brought that up and you didn't make him happy. But I got paid for it 90 days to 30. But hell, I had no job. You're not in my plans. I'm making plans to change and you're not in my plans or something on the slides. That's a hell of a thing to hear on the morning. You drive back home and tell little jam as well. Here we go again, honey. Buckle up. I don't know what's going to happen next, but we got each other. And luckily for she and I both say to save money and she had a child, she was a flight attendant, make a couple bucks. So, but there again couldn't Dodge that bullet. Right. And I think probably Vince just could tell Ricky. I changed my mind. Right. I want to go a different way. Some talents are one of Ricky's Spock and started making an argument that he's too oatmeal. You see plain. I would never say that because I think he was an asset. Sometimes you got to look beyond certain things to determine one's value to your company. You know, and I thought that when I hired Mick Foley, you want a guy that's going to be good in the locker room that could help some of the younger guys make adjustments in adapt. And certainly a guy like Ricky steamboat is a value. To have in any locker room, then now dinner now. I must say then now and forever, but you know what I'm saying? I know that you said it perfectly. Vince would tell us if he was here. I changed my mind. Right. But thinking behind those words, I'm going to make a little bit of an analogy here, so humor me. Okay. I thought years ago, when Dolph Ziggler cashed in, the money in the bank, the night after WrestleMania, and beat Alberto Del Rio. It's one of the loudest pops I've ever heard. And I think that was like ten years ago. And fairly quickly afterwards, he had a concussion, and he was on the shelf for a bit. And it felt like they never put him in that same spot again. He never got that same opportunity again. And I remember people at the time saying, maybe Vince thinks he's injury prone. Maybe Vince doesn't think he can rely on him. He can count on him. And if you go back here to 1987, on the heels of what everyone is saying is the greatest match in WWF history. And he's the Victor, and he's the champion, and he's trying to grow Vince being he more than ever on the heels of WrestleMania three. They're taking out full two page spreads in industry trades, trying to sell arena business because they want to not, hey, if we can do one show, why not too, if we can do two, why not three? If we can do three, why not four? So he's trying to zigzag the entire country. And when one of his quote unquote pillars that he's built all this equity in this match and now the championship says I need to take some time off, it makes me think maybe Vince thought he's not reliable. Do you think that whole injury prone not reliable thing is something Vince really feels? Well, it's a good convenient excuse. Okay. Quite frankly. I don't know. I don't know how I can't thank for how it felt, but it would be scary, but to be able to do that. Yeah. I don't know, man. Bookers have used the same small assortment of excuses since the day I got in the business in 1974. And it's just their creative flexibilities that they create for themselves. Right. And sometimes you got to have a reason. Because remember, you're not just communicating with steamboat here. You're communicating with the entire roster. If this can happen to steamboat, then why can't it happen to me? Touch scenario. So. It's just one of those short lists of or change the plans. I'm going to have a heel champion. I want to discuss hot. We're going to get him all these hot. I want to go there. Whatever. There's a million stories. I've heard them all. But steamboat just fell out of grace for this, and I'm not sure exactly why. And let's just perceived that the champion asking for time off of all things to be with this newborn son is unacceptable. And I know most people are not going to agree with that because I don't agree with it either. Right. You always wanted a talent to come from home from home back to work in a better frame of mind than they left. Return to the locker room, positive, rested, excited to be there, et cetera, et cetera. And so you give if you give them that opportunity to do that and to keep their home life positive, you're much better off. Much better off in the long haul. It may mean booking and mad men TV, it may necessitate change, but in any event, that's the way to go. You got to give guys time to regenerate. And that's why I think AEW in the long haul is going to do really what it really well. Cause our schedule is conducive to wrestlers that have made some money or are making money, making good money as a matter of fact here at AEW. And, you know, they're just a day a week. Now you got to travel. So there's these factor that in, which I conveniently do for my own body. But finally, the house on Tuesday mornings are Tuesdays, and I get back home on Thursdays. That's my week. Right. And I embrace that schedule. I'm thankful for it. It's a good deal. So if it works for me at 71 years of age, it sure as hell ought to work for some of these young dudes that are tanning and wetting their hair and getting more tattoos and things of that nature. We can take time out of their tattoo schedule to be able to be home, train, and Paul run and I worked Sunday as we do every Sunday, on the book. The next book is working title JR 50, but I don't know if that's going to be it or not. Everybody's got an opinion. He found everybody gets in the Booker's room. Why don't we call it this? Why don't we call up that? So, but Paul and I were talking about that and

"Knew and of course the highlight was the whole buildup was hoping in the laundry. And you're wondering as a resting person, how they're going to get out of this. I was just going to go. I was Andre was so beat up and stoved up and could barely walk. So, but the match that stole the show from the wrestling side obviously was steamboat. I thought at one time it might have gone a little long. But it seemed like that Randy was held. They don't get some of the stuff in. And sometimes that's not always the best. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. I thought of that match. It was a piece of art. It was Rembrandt on a different canvas. I just thought that might have gone a little long. And maybe that's me setting aside all those fans and I don't know, but I thought it might have been a little long. I still negative, I can think of. And it's not a big enough negative D fucking to worry about because it was amazing. Amazing. Before we talk about the aftermath of that incredible WrestleMania three match with Randy Savage, I do want to go back and talk about something that we sort of skipped in an effort to just jump right to that WrestleMania three match. One of the more we'll call it infamous moments in WWF history is a feud he has with Jake the snake Roberts. I don't even know. How you would describe the circumstance, but a DDT on the floor, we had seen the DDT, the DVT was established, fans knew, you know, that was the end, but one on the concrete, and all of a sudden, this isn't just for show. He's hurt for real. What do you remember of this DDT and the circumstance where you got a guy falling on his head on concrete? I can only imagine in a social media era, how viral this would have been. But this is on NBC, too. What did you think of that? Too much. Yeah. Risk reward was out of kelter. There's no margin for air. Any significant degree, how do you protect steamboat? Because it's all about protecting each other. So I thought it was a little too much. It sort of had great impact. I had great effect. But I thought it was a little risky to say the least. And guys I talked to you that were in mid south at that time would say the same thing. I wouldn't do that. Right. Do it in a ring. It's risky enough, but to do it on a concrete floor, no way in hell. I think as the story goes, even Jake didn't want to do it. It was one of those deals where maybe the NBC executives really wanted something special for NBC. So they rolled the dice and boy it didn't work out. If you talk to Ricky steamboat, he'll tell you that his head swoll so big felt like an alien and he didn't get a black eye for like two weeks because he had to have the soil and go down before the blood could even go there. It's a major real dangerous circumstance that thankfully we don't see any of that anymore. And thankfully, we don't see the ceiling that resulted in this snake versus the tracking feud, we had Ricky steamboat come to the ring in this era with a Komodo dragon. And I understand we're trying to market to kids and get these over the top gimmicks and personas, so the bulldogs bring a dog and Jake the snake brings a snake. That got too much for me, Conrad. It's like a goddamn zoo. Yeah, well, what's the duke, the dumpster rings the trash can? Yes. It's stuff like that. I thought that went way too far. And it was sold to some of the fans intelligence. I think it was a tune out by and large, unless it's just for comedic effect. And I believe that planned comedy in pro wrestling is a role of the dice. There's plenty of room in pro wrestling for humor and a chuckle or a laugh, or whatever, but to go way out of your way to find a semblance of a giggle. Don't work for me. Let's talk about what didn't work for steamboat. After that incredible match at WrestleMania three, a match that they would replay on TV every chance they got, they knew they had gold here, and it looks like in this era on the heels of WrestleMania three. The company's hotter than ever. Not only be running an a and B crew, like there's two shows, a touring house shows, but they're going to start running three, and sometimes four shows, so they need the Intercontinental Champion to be near the top of the cards. And that's Ricky the dragon steamboat. But unfortunately, this coincides with around the same time that his son is going to be born. So steamboat goes to Vince and ask her a few weeks off. He gets the time off, but Vince has to take the title off of him because he needs that title defended on these house show events as an attraction. So tickets. That's understandable. And I guess steamboat felt like that wasn't really part of the plan. He felt like he had been promising a more significant title run. He didn't want to drop the title, but he did need the time off, ultimately steamed but winds up dropping it to the honky tonk man. And this develops a bit of a rift between steamboat and Vance. When steamboat does return, he knows the writing is on the wall here. Maybe he's lost Vince's lost confidence in him. And I was like, you can't count on him. And he's told that he's going to be eliminated in the first round of the WrestleMania title tournament. In March of 88, and it turns out that's actually his last wrestling appearance anywhere until 1989. What do you think happened there? You know vents better than most. Do you think men's lost confidence in him and thought, well, if I can't count on you to be my torch bearer, you're just an underneath guy now. Knowing Vince, I would say he would tell you and me, he changed his mind. Yeah. And that was the go to from him. Two talent through the tout relations guy, in some cases, me that

"Opinion, and I think it's clear that to dusty and steamboat had a difference of opinion when it came to their own particular philosophies or wrestling. Obviously dusty being the resident, baby face, what was he looking for? He's looking for heels to work with. And when you get the potential of having a Ricky steamboat who could feed a comeback and take plenty of months and make the bay face look like Superman without being Superman, you want to explore that if you get a chance. Steamboat is there to go for it because he didn't steal a car for doing it. He thought it was, it was too much of a stretch. I agree with you too. I never understood why other dis facilitate one match or one TV program between the dusty and steamboat essentially funny to say. Dusty versus steamboat. You don't fit. Right. For some reason it just doesn't fit. So steamboat had a real good instinct Conrad on what worked for him. Yes. And most top guys, I said this story before it's very degrees. When cowboy brought a top guy into the mid south and that was a good basis in my education. And that's all I can draw on is what my personal experiences were, the talents coming in, these veteran heels for cowboy to work with, or cowboy wanted to break these veterans, baby faces, they knew what worked for them. So they sat down and brainstormed with watts and figure out the best path of progress, best path to travel. And because they knew what worked for them, it's been said over the years that God leave maybe for a decade, the assassins, Tom Ernesto and Joe Hamilton, the father Nick Patrick, which we had on the ad free shows here recently. I think he did anyway. Yeah, he's a regular part now, Jim. Okay. Part of the fan now. Nick Patrick. Maybe I should maybe I should be paying more attention. I don't know where it was. Steamboat just, he just he knew what worked for him. Yes. And why deviate from what's working? You got a hundred mile an hour fastball. Why do you want to start throwing the junk? You're getting them out with a fastball. Do that. Exactly. You can't get them out anymore. So, but I think Ricky was probably more current on his own skin as to what he could or could not do well as anybody I ever knew. Steamboat's also going to go ahead and defeat maniac Matt born at the very first WrestleMania and as a fun little trivia note, that makes steamboat one of only three guys to compete at the first arcade and the first WrestleMania. The other two being Roddy Piper and Greg Valentine, nice little feather in the cap and early in this run here, he's given the nickname the dragon. He starts to do like a karate man style gimmick. His first major feud is with Don Morocco, and then he goes on to defeat Hercules Hernandez at WrestleMania two, the style and the presentation of the WWF is a lot different from Jim Crockett promotions. And I'll be honest, I kind of felt like the style of mid Atlantic probably lent itself more to his skill set, would you agree with that or did you like what he did in the WWF better? This lock it at all. I don't know, personal preference. I don't know there's a difference between the two styles. Savage, the steamboat had a wrestling match. Oh yeah. And at WrestleMania three, they had a wrestling match. And it was very basic and very sound and very logical. I know savage overthought it, because I've talked to steamboat about that and, you know, Randy just wore his ass out about, you know, would do this. Now we'll go do that. If it came too much of a memorization type thing, which I'm not for, I think it takes a spontaneity out of the scenario and the moments. So anyway, but I never saw that much difference. When you got into the lower card and the cartoon character stuff and the characterizations of some of these cats, you know, I get to understand about the one main gang became a keen the African dream and that's a little too far from me. But steamboat and flair was just a wrestling match and a great wrestling match. Let's talk about WrestleMania three. That legendary match for the intercontinental title, Randy Savage and Ricky the dragon steamboat, even now, like 36 years later, people still talk about this at the top of the list as being one of the greatest WrestleMania matches of all time. You mentioned you weren't able to see closed circuit of the first star kit. Did you get a chance to see a closed circuit of WrestleMania three or what do you remember about that one? The company, WWF, rented a, there's always these maze of buildings on a fairgrounds. So they've had livestock shows, this anyway, they bring it a little building. And with their big screens and came in and did WrestleMania and because we ran the other the big building on the fairgrounds, we had great contacts with everybody at the fair. So one of the guys you want to come watch the show so they got me they walked me in and I sat down and watched the show on a closed circuit. Interesting experience because I'd never seen an event on a circuit before. So it was fun and

"Associate today. Discount site. let's talk a little bit about his debut, his being Rick Rick steamboat of course. He's going to debut as dick blood. Which is his real name, Richard blood, but her stick is short for Richard. Dick blood, would have been a hell of a wrestling name. He debuted in 1976 and then eventually moves to the Florida territory a few months later. And that's where he's given the name Ricky steamboat, dig blood sounds like a heel name. Does it not? Yeah. So that's just not going to. He's a baby face. Our sounds like a, you know, preliminary porn star. He's working underneath. That's what they did. That's what they do. When did you first hear of Ricky steamboat? Are you hearing reports from Florida? Yeah, Florida. See, that's another thing. I got privy to so many conversations. With some of the most powerful men in wrestling at a very early age because I was more or less cowboys Gopher. And I took notes and made phone return calls and helped with this that and the other, but I was doing talent relationship stuff and didn't even know it at that time. But it was great, but the point was I was in cowboy's office a lot and not for disciplinary reasons. I wasn't in the presence office of that, but I was in his office to take things down and follow to follow up or get something he had almost long. Cowboy didn't have with us short legal pads. Right. It was long legal pads. And it was always for notes. And there were notes on there that were applicable to me that he wanted me to follow up on. So that was what I was doing early on. And it helped me immensely, as time went on, as far as learning management skills, understanding the business and so forth. But I was also privy to all those conversations. So you could hear what was in the head of burn are Fritz. I never liked the phone calls that Fred. Fritz had Fritz had one way or the highway type deal or whatever that cliche is. And he was a pain in the ass to deal with. He was just overpowering. You know, he was, he was Lauren green. He was of the bonanza. There's Paul, little Joe, you know, and all that stuff. So he was just tough to deal with sometimes. And of course, eventually his relationship to cowboy and Verne. Decimated went away, he evaporated the world was looking for. And so but it was the educational sale for me. It's like going to class every day. Well, we know that steamboat's career really takes off once he's in Florida and it happens largely with the name. Eddie Graham gave me the same boat name in 1976. I walked to the Tampa office and there set 80 gram and Verne gagne had sent him pictures of me wrestling as Rick blood and Eddie said it was a great wrestling name. But for a heel and then he said we had a guy here in Florida named Sammy steamboat and he was from Hawaii the very next night and West Palm Beach. I'm the first match. I'm standing in the ring and the ring announcer goes ladies and gentlemen. We have a substitute this evening. Rick blood is unable to make it. And I'm standing there and I completely freak out and forget that I'm Ricky steamboat. This is a great wrestling story. Is it not? Yeah, it is, yeah. Well, you know, Eddie, Eddie, had they had factor, man. Eddie had great instincts. And like I said, here's another guy that cowboy leaned on for ideas, they had great creative feedback and brainstorming sessions. And so forth. When cowboy opened his house up after he did all this remodeling thing on this multi-million dollar home, he flew Eddie in to be a guest, and then my job was to babysit Eddie, which was challenging because he was just safiya drunk. And but I sit and talk to him and, you know, they say the only person that could stand a drunk is another drunk, so I tried to keep up with that as best I could. But I learned so much that night. It goes like four or 5 hours. Sitting there and Eddie didn't know all those local Tulsa people. So he had me and I had him for lack of a better explanation. But I learned so much, you know, this is a little sentence here to sit there and say, oh, okay, I get it now. I understand. So it was a great part of that hope foundation of sitting in those phone calls and so forth. But Eddie was until he got so deep in the booze was the hell of a confidante for cowboy. Well, we know that he's going to experience quite a bit of success. He being steamboat when he spent some time working in Georgia, but he feels like he wins the wrestling lottery, if you will, when he lands in mid Atlantic at the time it's being handled and booked a lot by George Scott. And this is when people started to really take note and take notice of steamboat. He gets his first big program here with a fellow named Ric Flair. Flair had allegedly personally requested to Jim Crockett that he wanted to work with steamboat and Rick is not shy about telling this story. He saw this young jacked up handsome guy and thought, hey, let me try him on. I think we can tell some stories together. And boy, was he right? Now, as much as we're going to talk about a little later, the often celebrated trilogy from 1989, if you ask the performers themselves, steamboat and flair would say, we had our best matches in the 70s. Were you fortunate enough to see any of those? Just as a videotape and they were all they were outstanding. You know, because that's just a close emotional investment in the trilogy at 89 because I called all three of them with three different partners. I have a little bit of bias. Shall we say, but the matches that they're talking about that were held earlier than 1989, they're actually rattled. There are phenomenal. Those guys, I killed them one time. I said, you guys are too smooth. Because it looks like you've rehearsed this like a thousand times. Right. But you don't make any missteps. You don't make any mistakes. At least I can see. And so I love most matches. It was a big honor to be able to view that chair at that point in time. But they had Conrad, I'd never seen. I've seen a lot of videotaping steamboat. And I never seen a bad match out of them yet. They just had great natural chemistry. They thought alike. They're on the same page, philosophically. And they're both very, very unselfish, which is key. About 8 years ago, maybe, I saw a blog that you did. And you talked about Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair. And some of the matches they were having down in NXT and at the time NXT had started touring a little bit. They were running live events here in yawn. And you said, this could be the modern day flare steamboat. And I thought that was a great analogy and a great compliment to the ladies. And I went out of my way to go see that match, and I was glad I did. It was fantastic. But I say all that to say, for you who's seen more wrestling than probably anybody listening to this program. To make that comparison, it tells me that you held that rivalry and really, really high regard. Can you think of a more perfect pairing between two in ring performers than steamboat and flair or is that still the greatest to you? I think it's still the greatest

"Okay, you want one, David. This is a well-known one, but I can't not say savage versus steamboat WrestleMania three, which could still be one of my top three matches. You don't like it? It's not that I don't like it. I do like it. I like it a lot. There's things about that match that bothers me. Well, okay, well, let me say why I like it. Sure. And then you can tell why it bothers you. Because and I know what you're going to say because people forget how involves George animal steel wasn't that match. People forget. They almost forget that he was even in it at all. The reason why I like this match, it's not the cliche of just saying, I lived it, okay? Because I was a huge fan at that point in time. And back in the day, there was no pay per view. It was closed circuit television, okay? So you would go to the arena and on the scoreboard, they would show the matches. And you would sit there watching it on a big screen TV in the arena. So they had it for WrestleMania two and Winnipeg, where I grew up. WrestleMania three, they didn't bring close circuit in. And all I cared about what happened with savage steam, but whatever, 'cause the whole angle was brilliant. Savage was the best worker in the company, except for Ricky steamboat. And Steven was the best worker in the company, except for Randy Savage. They were neck and neck of being just this amazing chemistry that they had. Plus as characters. A steamboat was the consummate good guy. Savage was the evil guy who was hiding behind the Elizabeth and then savaged to hit the ring bell into greats into his steamboat's throat and crushed his larynx and Ricky told me to talk as Jericho that Vince wanted him to go to like voice class and be like, Paul. And they finally, it was too stupid. They stopped it. So it build up this big match, and we didn't get it in one of bacon. I was flipping out, but wrestling was so popular then they showed highlights of it on the sports not even SportsCenter on the Detroit sports station that we used to get in Canada showed highlights of it. And then I had to wait another month for coliseum video. So I didn't get to see it until it came out on video. Once it did, my friend and I, we had our own Utah backyard wrestling now at the time. It was just us resting on Matt's in our House. We memorized that whole match. The beginning to end. And I remember I could be wrong 23 or 24 two counts we call them false finishes now. We didn't know what they're called 24 two counts. There's so many two cats we can't believe it. And we had the whole thing. Let's do it. Let's just savage steamboat. And to this day, still lives in my head because that's where I really started realizing. I can do this. I can wrestle. Not as big as those guys, but I've learned the routine. So that always holds a deer spot to me. Did you not like it? Well, I mean, first and foremost, like your favorite being Ricky steamboat, Ricky steamboat is on my top ten of greatest pro wrestlers of all time. By the way, you're in my top ten. Oh, thank you. Greatest pro wrestlers of all time. And I think steamboat, a lot of times, is underrated for the agreed. I mentioned it on busted open and people call in and say, come on, hey, if you look and you ask most people their top ten matches, people are gonna have steamboat and savage. People are gonna have the trifecta with flair. You know, in 89. So you're talking, you know, four or 5 of some of the greatest pro wrestling matches of all time. Involved Ricky steamboat. Yeah. So I really think he's underappreciated when people agree. 'cause he left WWE so quickly too or WWF kind of just disappeared for a while, you know? But so what don't you like about the match? It's the involvement of George the animal steel. It bothered me that night because he pushes savage off the top rope, which leads to the finish, right? Yeah. And because like you, I was completely involved in that story. I put the story was amazing. And I saw it on closed circuit TV. I saw it at the William Patterson college, gymnasium. And if you remember, WrestleMania three started in the afternoon. The gymnasium, there was no curtains on the windows. So for half the show, you couldn't see it on close to light. Because it was too light and gymnasium. But that involvement of George the animals. That's a great point, yeah. It bothered, it bothered me that night. You know, it's funny and then we'll get to Gabby's next choice. It's funny because we were just talking about the, I think is the 5th anniversary of the festival of friendship with Kevin Owens and I. Which to me is still one of the greatest Ross segments ever, completely unbiased saying that. But what I forgot completely is that Gilbert's in that. He comes down there for no apparent reason. It's like, why the fuck is Gilbert in this? It's because he was doing something with Goldberg coming up. But he's like, you forget that George animal steals that match. You forget that Gilbert was in the festival of friendship. You kind of edit out the things that you don't want to remember. And you know what? You didn't need to have it. And at all. It would still have been a classic match. Of course. It still would have told an amazing story and would have been like you said that kiss at the end. He didn't need to have George animal steel involved. One last thing I asked steamboat, which one did you like better? Flair versus steamboat, whichever the classic one was great American bash, I think. Well, they had the three class of champions that shy town. Let's say, what was your favorite? Would you like better? Savage versus steamboat, WrestleMania, or flare versus steamboat at clash of the champions. He said, I'm going to answer it this way. Steamboat versus savage. We had a list from move one to move 250. Flare and steamboat, we just called it all in the ring, which one do you think I like better? Right? I mean, come on. Yeah. And in my opinion, does that take a little bit away from the match that does everything? It doesn't to me because maybe that's so savage like to work. So there's two sides of the rest of the coin..

"Pay day. See, that's what I love. You're honesty. It's right there. By the way, JR keep smiling. That's what he understood with. I'll try. I'll do my best, dude. There you go. JR, listen next week. It's super brawl two. 30 years ago from Milwaukee, Lex Luger took on sting for the WCW World title and what would be lex's last WCW match for three years, you get juice and liger versus Brian Pillman for the light heavyweight title. Yeah. I remember lager and pillman, more than any match on that card. I'm not an end up pat's a quiz on staying in legs. Yeah. I remembered liger and. Brian. The talent on this card is ridiculous. You're gonna get rude versus Ricky steamboat for the U.S. belt. You're gonna get on and Bobby Eaton. Okay? Defending the tag titles. You're getting to get Steiner's cactus versus Ron Simmons. I mean, you're sitting next to Jesse, the body. This is gonna be an epic card and lots of things I think that was a cowboy I've been watching. I think watch the book that I think watch book that card. The only thing I remember about that other the film and liger was. I forgot to pack a tie, says for you remember stuff like that on these shows. There you go. I forgot to pack a tie. And luckily there was a mall. Not nearby, and I went to that mall that morning of the show and bought me a new tie. But the little things like that, what you remember going to darely cowboys and not before and going over the card. What do you want? The thing I used to always ask Bill and I asked, this is Tony Kahn, I just asked this event. How do you want it to sound going off the air? What points do you want me to make sure I nail? As we leave the air. And cause every Booker should have a vision for the next chapter of the story that they're writing or booking, as they say in wrestling. So cowboy and I would talk about that. What do you want to do there? And sometimes he would get aggravated. At the restrictions, because the workers weren't as good as some of the workers cowboy had. In the mid south. Styles had changed. And you know, I don't know, it's just he was, but he was so smart. I learned so much from him. So, you know, I need to hear one of those gigs. I think Conrad interviewed cowboy right. Not yet, he's working on it. All he did, he hasn't. And if he has, he hasn't told me or anybody else yet, but I know it's something he's working on. Yeah, yeah. That's great. Yeah. And do it now. That's right. Watson's still sharp as a tack. And he's not getting any younger. I'm not make that terrific with Conrad. I think that would be fantastic. The three of you in the room together just talking wrestling. Unbelievable. Yeah, that gets silver.

"To talking. All right, welcome to talk is Jericho. It is the pod of thunder and rock and roll. And the wrestling world receives some very sad news earlier this week when James guffey also known as Jimmy rave passed away on December 12th at the age of 39. He leaves behind his daughter Kayla and his son, Jimmy junior, his family and friends are planning a memorial for him in Georgia and his daughter has set up a GoFundMe to help them cover a celebration of life and funeral expenses for Jimmy. And if you can contribute, please do. The link is in the description for this podcast episode. I also shared it on my Twitter, and you can find it online by going to go fund me dot com slash F slash Jimmy dash rave memorial. Seems kind of, I guess strange the fact that we have this interview with Jimmy, I guess it could be probably one of his last interviews he ever did. We recorded this on October 30th of this year. So basically, I guess, about 6 weeks before Jimmy passed away. And this is the honest truth I was always planning on dropping this episode right here on December 17th. This was kind of when I had it earmarked. And of course he passed away in December 12th. So I wanted to put this interview out, I think it'd be a good way to celebrate his life and his career because Jimmy was very positive in this interview. It was very kind of sobering to talk about all the things that he went through obviously he had lost his left arm and both legs were amputated due to complications for mrsa. Obviously, he had to retire from wrestling, but he was still adjusting to his new reality. And it seemed like he was adjusting okay. He was talking about the struggles in this interview. Here is positivity and how hopefully was for the future. He wasn't great spirits when we spoke. We talked a lot about his career, shared stories about what he learned from dusty Rhodes and Ricky steamboat, tag teaming and TNA with Lance archer. As The Rock and rave infection, it was Lance rock back then. Jimmy talked about his feud with A.J. Styles in Ring of Honor. His cage match was CM Punk. He talked about the time. He spent his Booker for rampage for wrestling. Like I said, he had his struggles, but he was very positive. And I really wanted to still put this interview out this week, not to try and take advantage of the fact he passed away. But I felt if I didn't put it out now, I might never put it out. So, like I said, this was the day that I had designated to release this December 17th. He passed away just 5 days ago. And so this is a tribute to Jimmy rave. And we're going to promote his GoFundMe. And if you guys can donate a little bit, that'd be great. And just kind of promote the man. And kind of have a little bit of a retrospective of his life almost like a eulogy, if you will. A eulogy spoken by him. So I hope you guys are cool with it. I really wanted you guys to hear this interview and let you know that no matter what happened to Jimmy and whatever the circumstances were for his passing, he was still positive and he was thinking about the future and thinking about what he wanted to do with his life and even with his career. So this is the first time I ever met him. I believe we talk about this over Zoom, StreamYard, whatever it was, so we did get the talk face to face and so this is for Jimmy rave. Rest in peace, buddy, and I was pulling for you and you were definitely very inspiring with all the things that you had to go through. So this is a eulogy for Jimmy rave as done by Jimmy rave. We paid tribute to Jimmy to his life to his career right here. Talk is Jericho with the late Jimmy rave. I hope you guys get something out of this because I know I sure did. It's a story that I really wanted to talk about with Jimmy rave. And first and foremost, dude, you've been wrestling for many, many years. Have we ever crossed paths before? I don't think so. I've done some extra work here and there. And maybe that way, but nothing else. This could be our first official meeting here. When TNA was, I can't remember maybe probably in the mid 2000s. That's when you were there. And I remember seeing that. Yes, sir. You were a tag team with Lance archer. I remember The Rock and rave connection, right? Exactly. And we'll talk all about that and I want to hear about your whole wrestling history, but let's talk about kind of the start off what's going on right now because you've had some really tough times to say the least. Kind of let's discuss all this happens with you over the last year, Jimmy and kind of fill us in what's been going on where you're at. Yeah, so about maybe September, August last year. I had been doing some yard work, right? Like I had scraped my arm. It was painful at first, but not anything I would run to the hospital about, you know what I mean? So I just put some neosporin on it and went about my way. And then sporadically, it would flare up a little bit, you know what I mean? On my left arm. But nothing crazy, you know? And then one day I started having trouble using my hand, my pinky and my ring finger were contorting to where they wouldn't open up. At that point, I was like, I need to go to the hospital,.

"By Ted dibiase. And then all of a sudden, who sees persona, he got over as a baby face. I remember one of the worst cuttings he ever gave me was one night after all. Was over, and I went back to the locker room area and there he looked down at the floor like he was looking for dimes. And I said, well, how's it feel to be a big baby face, man? I got an FU and SOB and, you know, he was ripping my ass. I said, well, let me hold on a second. Because I knew what motivated stoical. Yeah. Money. I said, you know, the money you could make. Simply on a merch. Is astonishing. You'll make more money on merch than you've ever made with a resting contract. And he raised his head up off the floor and looked at me. And he was searching for more info. I said, you're going to have quarters of income where you're going to make 7 figures. And you know I both know 7 figures is a $1 million. That's a lot of t-shirts. You might say, but you've got your audience is growing at least some bounds every week. There's more posters every week. That's a great market research. The promoter should look at the science and the audience. I love it when AEW fans rank signs. It tells us what's on their mind, which are thanking what has their interest at that point in time. Right. So he got over his heart on for being a babyface and started accepting the role because becoming a baby face might not have been his preference. He wanted to be an old school heel. I said your shelf life would be longer as this character baby face. That's what he was. He wasn't Ricky steamboat, Ricky Morton, trying to kind of a baby face. He was a character baby face that didn't change his work style. It changed his whole his mannerisms as a sequencing or nothing. He just was a rough ass character baby face. And I told him, you know, you're kind of like cowboy was. Back in that air, cowboy was not going to take a lot of bones. Right. But he was so much run into his fist as often as you wanted to. Until it was time to go home. And people loved it. They lived by carelessly through that. So he started coming around in that regard, but and we all knew that somewhere down the road, you know, at some point, stone cold versus red heart was the money. And it was money. WrestleMania 13 was a hell of a massless dude sad. So as a double turn, and those are hard to pull off. I've been a part of many successful ones. So yeah, I think that I think that we were on the cusp of doing a lot of things, but we needed Brett. To make sure it all worked. Because he had a stability, and he added believability to the process that we're trying to achieve. So it was interesting time to say the least in this episode of raw is really compelling and standpoint that it opened a door for a lot of things. It's going to be a different day, different era, different priorities. And it was looking back on it is a whole lot more exciting now than it was then because then we didn't know where we were going. We didn't know. Is this going to work? And nobody created the attitude era when nobody was supposed to think, oh, attitude air, shit, nobody knew what that was. We wanted to get new talents involved. There were hungry. They were looking for an opportunity. And nobody was hungrier than the stone cold. And I know this is not a stone coach show, but that was kind of the mindset of what we're trying to do. You have guys a chance that has been working a long time. There were good hands in the ring. There were pro wrestlers and they were doing. And that included at the top of the very list was Bret Hart. Red hart was where it all started in the trickle down from Brett was prominent and significant to say the least. Well, to be clear, it kind of is a stone cold episode because he's one of the opponents that Brett's looking forward to working with the most, and of course we know it'll be Brett's first opponent. But before we press play, I want to ask a couple more questions. One specifically about Bret Hart. I'm not exactly sure when the timeline happened, but I know in 1996, is when we see JJ Dillon leave and go to WCW. And I believe that happened, the month prior in September. So I am curious since you're now going to be trying to tackle some of the talent relations stuff on a Bruce had a cup of coffee in that C to believe. All right, he did. But were you involved in any of the Bret Hart negotiation? No, and you know, that was a comedy nominator through the years of advance. He took ownership of certain talents. Got it. When we brought in return Hogan, you know, I had no relationship with Hogan. And unfortunately, I still don't have one at this very day. I respect him. I don't dislike him. I just never got close to it. Then this had a close time. And they had been closer in 19 would say, but no, I didn't have that was all Vince. Some of those talents, like warrior, and Brett, of course. The one that he let go of because I got more results than Vince did was Austin. Right. Officer became my guy. And, you know, I did everything I could for stage to win and for the company to win. For the company to win with Austin, make sure his contractors solid. And he's happy. And make sure he's getting paid well. Based on what he's earning and what he's selling. Again, the house show business was a huge component of what we were doing and added to the bottom line of these guys income. But Vince was Brett versus guy. And we also wanted to handle Brett himself. And I think that was a smart move quite frankly. I could back it up. I could reinforce his theories and his feelings and so forth to Brett when it was called upon. But this one to make sure he took care, Brett, and I said, have at it. Because that gave us you know, that helped me out a lot. It helped me get a deal done. Basically because we answer trying to was ramrod again. And I think that made bread feel good. He's being intended to by the top guy, and not a ham and air from Oklahoma. What's the hold up? Do you need me to spell it out for you? It's GER, CO dot com. That's why you save money. Geico dot com. Talk to me about mister perfect..

Oh yeah they would say that it was always like get distracted by captain La Banda or Freddie Blassie made he just. He couldn't play the mental game. That's why he could win. You also couldn't have two African American and wrestlers at the top of a card like SD Jones. Whatever his fate mistake early in the navy is going to be a jobber but he could never rise to the level of rocky? He had a a full body, armor suit that allowed him to keep moving around even though pretty much most the bones as body were were broken. He's gone one step further. Now he has his own little hover wheelchair. So he looks a lot like professor x with a big bat symbol on his chest. Sure. He's still pretty deadly. Even with that full body armor, he wolf to bunch of of legion of doom. He was pretty instrumental and then justly getting the totality away from lex Luther on. Now, he's taking easy. He's he's sitting instead of standing. But this, this hover chairs pretty armored up. I'm sure he's got it full of all kinds of weapons. So certainly Justice league.
