"You don't because they just buddy was there. He was that rough and tough guy. You were talking about you know. And that could look and and and he needs any it could hold his own understanding. They were brewing him dot. They were with him to hold that title for a while to work. That have that good long. Run like seen both player discipline. Nwa doddle you know they say boating player had to run over there carolina's for years. You know same a like we did in tag teams another other but magnum you know they were. I can't tell you the limit that he would win to. I really good. Because i'm going back to the same thing. What if right and everything. But that's cool states before you go. Yes yes one. Last question i was. I was talking with someone earlier about getting over. What in your opinion is the hell is going to be. Talked about getting over What what what is your key. Or one is your. What was your sacred to getting over. Isn't a fluke is in a chance isn't luck. what's your take on getting over. I'll take get an oak or was the first thing is and this is not the right place at the right time but the only thing to get sober and you look at everybody in this business again over. Even you done it steve. And that's a nolan. How to sail okay knowing how to sell the business that's what keeps people's nt hitting all your great stars. You look at 'em each and every one of them knew how to sail and if you could make like you said from day valid co while ago if you wanna you know you big star bound if you make people feel what you feel inside and that's what you really gotta do. That's learned that magic of the business then people out there. That's watching you in that match but to me the greatest that ever got me over it and when i go especially back then guys won't come out with any kind of watch i don't do out spot and i don't die and i keep fighting you and fighting you invite need to you have to cheat the beat. 'cause i never give up never know. I wasn't like a fish out of water. Just flopping around when i sewed something. I sold it for what you did to me. You know if you gave me a gut shot. I didn't do afford flip. He ever noticed. That happened a lot of time. I'll tell you when you gave me something. I sewed it like. You really gave it to you. Know you punch me in the mouth you know. I'm gonna sail that punch in the mouth I never forget the first time. I wrestled brian. armstrong memphis. tv. You know he was coming in and road dog and i and a lot that with diverse. Give me a punch. And he gave me a punch. But i i sewed it like he really well. He thought he hit me on tv and he said it or going on wanted to do hurts. You almost started laughing. You're having but it's just the way it was then to me. This is selling the making making people believe what you believe inside. That's what really is if you believe in yourself you get yourself over. You know it's one thing you got it which is an and it's great stone. Cold steve austin miami buddy. I kid you iranian stave told you earlier and i meant that my heart and really in our business you won the last once ever really get over to me you one of the greatest credits business ever had and that's comment and take that for a compliment and that's from my heart. You know even when you a hot. I could go anywhere in the world and this is no. I'd go anywhere in the world. And i see somebody with a stone. Cold steve. austin shirt was that it was a deal where you know i was it a right right place at the right time and dadgum. There's some lucky figured in. But i did believe in myself to your point but i was i cannot get..

"He told you he wore three dot thousand dollars soon be at a three thousand pseudo when he told you he had eight hundred dollar pair of shoes on eight hundred dollars. So you know limousine flying. I mean let me jet. Flying lindsay ryden All that was true and rick. You know he'd lived his gimmick a were you was the nature more ric flair To me i mean. I see the guys who tried to go out to reward but see they tried to. It's that's what mice talking to you about earlier stephen. I don't have the answers. Everything but as a baby face can change his way to work with the. That's that's rick flair you gotta work ric flair. Don't have one certain style if you try to book him in the ring. It's your batches goes up. You know what. I'm saying he's gonna make you suck for one thing do you. You know what i'm saying is going to make it so up. But i had a great run and there's a little bit flair was going to promos. Just throwing everything you face at the shoes. These weren't probably cost more than your house. I mean all that just You know it was damn near shoot him. It was a shoot him. He was in kellyanne seven. But but you said earlier. I'll take you back. You said maybe you didn't think your promos we're the greatest. I what i liked about your promo ricky was because every time you said something you meant it and a lot of times it's just coming on the heels of maybe take an ass heels or getting some heat on you and robert Yeah you hoot. But i mean so you you. You had emotion like you are not. They're trying to say equals. Mc squared like a scientist is about. Hey you're gonna you did this once you got away with it ain't gonna happen again or there was there was there was revenge doors vengeance remaining behind what you were saying so you you can go out there and you can. Anybody can talk for five minutes. But if there's not any anger emotion Or or salt and pepper and your language or your cadence or how you deliver it. Hey man to me yeah. Promo is either effective or ineffective. You gotta make those people feel what you're feeling like you know mr mr mr. Can you make folks cry when you play and sing because long hard brad show but to me you're able to get emotions out of people through the fire you had to the selling you dead and you knew that god dang it you guys were pain or you're trying to get the belts back and that's why i just grabbed daddy to you on on every level because believed in what work i believed in the man. I believe that when you open your mouth. You're going to do what you said he was going to do. What could see. That's a great cop back from you. Go back to sell any. You know i could cry. You hear me at boy. I'll get to cried and not watch you. An era with a young girls may have. That'd be crying about shoot. I ain't going to get hurt like my arm. I have arm wrapped up. I look out there all the fans. I have the arm wrapped up. You know because it was a different era and they believe but see once they never did on my interviews. I've ever got when out. There is being a baby face and in the healed. I'm gonna jerk your head off at doodo down your next. I never told him that i was going to do this to you. Always told him that. I'm gonna come out and do the best that i got right because there's a different time back. A small baby face couldn't go out there and promise the people that i was going to be ric flair for the world heavyweight title. And it wasn't going to happen. See that's another way that you the business changed. And i think he's not gonna say that i learned that from it. Oh then the match that you knew but see. You didn't know same because you didn't know your finished is you know it's like flare You know. I didn't know we're going with some nights. You know we went like seventeen our broadway matches but you had to wait to that night before he went to the rain to get that finish It's.

"You went to the ring but that was it was different. You know it's the difference. In time i mean i did several broadway rick. Flair didn't even see him. Do he got an ring. Matter of fact Every night done it. I only time i ever saw was in her. People thought that you know nowadays which we are bobby. You don't like me bobby. Tommy rich guys like this so we all grew up together in this business and emit used to tell me a buzz hanging around said. Yeah but i had to wait. The bobby turn baby-faced for out with him. You never seen this together in a bar. You never seen this together at the house you know especially being watched gum and matthew. Didn't cave dude. You even call him on the phone and find your book for that so well. It's just a difference in times steve. I'll are great great memories. You know you know you had long territories at the time you drove him but you know what change for nothing no man. I love this business where we're going with ric flair and flair was as a single guy. He's probably my favorite world champion of all. It was a huge influence on. My career wasn't till i dropped on my head. I kind of had to modify style so as problem. And i hate to say this but it was probably a good thing. I dropped edgy. Changing my style because no one can be ric flair. Ric flair was ric. Flair changed into the brawling pro style dominated but In his prime. I worked with him a few times. What it twice and wwe. How was he in the ring. Just coming in and all you guys know finish and you're listening because you know he's well you see because you know ric flair what in the world champion for now. We're right yeah. He wasn't that he did somebody. Just give it to him buddy. He was ric flair and before. I even wrestled ric flair. He doesn't watch by matches. And you every need that. I i'd and when i went to the rate with our broadway i did it. We which the riga. He knew everything that i've done. Steve and he put it all dirt a match. You know it's time you know they you know it's you can't teach us kids either when they had this some things you've gotta learn on about when this happens and rick could do it. You know i'm used to a spot where you know he. He'll give me a taco. I'd go down a leapfrog. Give them a hip. Toss and say i call it an front hits her on. You know. i'll i'll show. I mean he knew all that he runs dad ring with him. And you all in never say that. Rick did rick was over like in philadelphia. And i remember at rick. Our posted. Go our broadway in philadelphia. What town idiots. But they and we got out there and body. I mean the first ten minutes match. They were tearing my ass but rick about twenty minutes in the match dude. I mean this is the work of art watch. This is this is how you learn and this is what people don't understand that you've got to be there to see this this. You've got to be there to learn this chemistry in it took philadelphia and twenty minutes. He turned him people. Gather look here. They pushed the guardrails all the way to the ring. aren't anderson. come down because they was trying to come in rain here come robert down there and they say you know they're coming up on the rail and rick this grab as off the top rope. You gotta go home. They got killed me. You say. That's a good buddy..

"You're still in the ring your sixty years old. You wrestled a couple of nights a week and earlier when we just talking on the phone college out of the blue just to say hello and i am. Call this talk. Talk to him about his wrath yet goal. What was the worst injury you ever got into ring. Because men went out when i look at your style and i. I just preaches a lot of young kids that are trying to get into these data kind of wants to work out suicide style at cruiserweight style and with with all due respect to cruiser which Ricky you aren't the biggest guy in the world who said you were a buck seventy five but you always worked pro-style working a body part your basic highspots say. I did in a more violent fashion. And i was. You know kind of a different kind of baby face and you are after becoming through my heel things but what was your worst injury because you wait on what could shape and listen to what i'm saying i'm driving under i'm gonna give waspa- lower them a run. I hear knocking on his wooden wall over here. Quick but now. I know you got that. Now i'm saying save really. I never had the really really major injuries. I had the ones that were just like all the other boys. Have you know the twisted ankles You know. I broke my arm before but it was not really. I never had no major surgery Never had seen you asked me earlier but house my body field but you see app. still guess. Mace we still young doing at my school. It's still working. But i imagine steve quit. I don't know i don't know i have. I don't know if i could walk if after. I quit and settle down for a while but i've never really had No major injuries like that but yet another thing saying that maybe catch ya see our business you gotta change with their business to me and i watched some stuff see our days and we always took care each other in the ring. 'cause we dependent on each other we didn't have contracts. Let's see nowadays. The people pay to see their money to watch you get her and the guys work like that too. I mean i don't notice it or not they you know they're high risk to me. It seems like they are because you read. A lot of them were injured. So that means they're taking a lot more. I guess a lot more risk doing things and the guys you know. We were talking earlier with oli. And aren't they knew how to take care of. Your bobby was one of the greatest. You know catching you in and doing things for the when you landed. You didn't get hurt. So i don't know i mean i never had dance your question. You know i'm i'm like everybody else. I got the chips and the elbows. I'll have the right there though. The sewer bag and sore knees sometimes bad ankles but other had steve spied it. But what are you teaching. Are you teaching the stahl that you worked as an entering performer. Are you teaching. Today's style that you found. Maybe a wwe. Because and i'm not gonna. I'm not a knock. I'm just saying guys working so hard and so fast in your opinion what do you think draws money is it harder. Faster action or more compelling storylines or maybe a heel that you hate because some things are done so fast these days. It's like man if things hurting i really. Can't you know. And i wanted the boys..

"When you got in there with only aren what you know here's only anderson. The minnesota wrecking crew the big bad son of a gun in the world. You know leroy brown you know. He's what i'm trying to say real bad and our neighbors they're real tough guys and you've got to understand you gotta change and you see them. What got me over. Steve is like you saying over was selling. You know when you start to sail my and and the whole match. I mean looked at some of these matches. Were only armed with would take that one body part just work on it and pound and pound and pound me but i'll never died and kept coming up not make those little third but see. That was the difference between all you know To me and i can't pick one. I loved them all every one of them. You know especially when. I was younger working with dennis conner because dennis taught me a lot marie but the when denis left stanley lane in was stan. Fill those shoes just like that because he was good looking. Great body heal. That fit right in the mode with bobby. Eaton jimmy cornet know sweet stan lane. Beautiful bobby this. That nailed the expresses against express but a lot of them worked out like that right there now thinking i'm not trying to pat myself on the back of i had but it was me at justin myself to these guys 'cause every one of them were great workers. All of them were not couldn't put because we grew money with all of them. I know when When you said loverboy. Dennis conner taught you stuff now when you started working with them and you're already a veteran. I'm assuming so what wail loud teach you. Well see. he taught me that you see. I was not really you know. I got my first break for bill. Watch you know. It's not really my first break. And they put me into the rock. You know the rock and roll risk of getting you know. That's what dennis. Bobby he told me the things about about selling. It's hard you know. That's what i'm trying to say. Is you know in the ring. You know ricky syllabus for ricky. Duda story when i get to the floor and this time it about jimmy. Important not touching the manager was you know he said if you touch jimmy cornet your take heat off of us right and it was right. Everything he told me was right and it was little things like that. Regino no matter. Who would you get a season veteran. Like dennis You know he teach you all the things in the ring that this little things mean. More than eighty eight thing ever could get us left and san stepped in their c. Span was was there is. He took the selling that. I had from a larger from dennis. The put it in a match with sweet. Stay on it all together safe. You're listening to another classic. Episode of the steve austin show. Only on podcast one. You own a richer home. Sure you do. And i bet it can be hard work.

Manny helped me out you know got but since then my skews grown enough you know i never make it much school. I put back into my school too. I really did not that. I'm making a killing off of it. I don't wasn't an anti danger. Man a good one costs you forty five hundred dollars steve. You know a and somebody like me. A lot of money so But what i do is i get mad. I got i got two of them. Now and i you know why. Let me pay for them Little time and not pay for them and he did. I got them all. Get everything paid off and did that. And now we're just working. You know then we start putting money back into cameras you know for you guys. You know. I wouldn't know one of the best talkers in the world. But i got my porna- calls but in all of my boys you know i teach them. You know instead of going into the rain looking at armpit you know hotspot number one or hotspot number two. I try to teach them how to start a match off. Talk how to boost but I had to do a lot of things that difference you know. My first one is learning how to talk. And how do you know trump teach them that magic when you walk out that door how you capture everybody in that building and i do good steve ever a matter of fact this coming sunday which i'm charlotte. I encourage a lot of the guys especially because he'll younger days we may. We wrestled overnight Nowadays these guys lucky to russell but once a week or every two weeks and it's just like you re though we're an entertainment business that we've got professional athletes. You gotta train like they are not at school you know. I'd rather much rather get in the ring with a guy that is not a you know got a little experienced by just going to russell schools not at all. So that's where i'm at chucky tennessee. Great location and it's just You know it's not hard to find. Stop a two buildings and check tennessee. What school morton talk to him about him range. "You know then they got to say something smart. That you lost him nine times. Would you see in our business? People don't realize. The people pay their money to see the baby faced speak to heal. The belts are always on the hill which okay. and. baby-faced chasing the hills. Because You don't want to be the champion and the heels beach you. You see what I'm saying we don't play the you get beat they pay to see you win. But you say you always chasing the heels for the belts and every time they screw Ya. Come back in a match. They can't screw you this way. The heels screw you another way. To record, it was the best in the world that. You see what I'm sayin'. It we didn't have. Time to go over matches. So you didn't. K-. The magic of the Russell matches in. The part of the heat on the. and. It just this is so great. I think talking to a lot of the boys you know having the conversations that I've been able to have with this show and you know my twenty four years in radio I was done not numerous. Wrestling interviews and. So many of them say especially, you know the older cats man are going now again, everything getting called in the back and you're you're wrestling for the dirt sheets that one of the ice storm or else know somebody was on the show recently and they said the problem is a Lotta. These guys are putting matches together to see what the boys in the back are going to say instead of just riding off the emotion of the actual crowd letting that dictate the match. So have a couple of spots but let the crowd dictate where it goes whether you if you did debt because they're so used to have betrayed trained. For that at inex- or anywhere else. I. Think they would. Absolutely. That actually be whilst they wouldn't know what to do when they got married. But she said that's support they get to understand. They need to teach them how to cover up stakes. You ever watched the match now Dan, he missed one up it of the whole crowd saying you found out and the reason why is because they let them know up. If you learn how to cover it up they don't happen. And See that a lot of times that I've seen it many many times on TV. By. What am I Chen which is right. You Fuck. You you've been watching no man. You've been watching the product and in we're GONNA go back. But you're saying that you are watching the product and you watch is a fan. You also watch kind of producer because you know that's in your head that's who you are. You've done this. Yes. So long. Are there any tag teams outright now I can think of a couple of debt feel old school to me again, going in the business or some guys I'm going okay. "Saturday morning at Memphis TV. My first first maximal TV was me superstar Dundee. The acting partners. Right. So you get the business as he get you started off, and you work in a singles, and then you do a little bit attack stuff. And is that when you go down you hook up with Ken Lucas, and then Lawler has idea because the fabulous ones against Abbas tag team there in Tennessee at the time and in lawler's thinking went in another tag team to work on the other crew. And it was his brainchild. Put you guys together you Robert Gates, but d- don't it what right after that. You know, I started in Memphis. But you know, you had Jerry Lawler Bill Dundee, but you had some of the greatest workers in the world. Now, I didn't go to Texas rotten. I mean, I worked other small. Territories. I went out to Oklahoma for LeRoy mcgurk. I went out to Kansas City for Bob geigo. I worked their territory, they're not came back to Memphis. And that's when they teamed a and kill Lucas up. You had a lot more experience under my belt, you know, mature into a business in it was time. So. Kim Lukas with a top worker at the time everywhere, and we got I went to Joe Blanchard. You know, that's where I met totally Blanchard this before then w days, I q Lucas. And I went to southwest championship wrestling based out of San Antonio, Texas. We wrestled all over so the Texas territory, and when I was there, I was teamed up with Kim. He that's when I learned how to be a great they'd face, and I learned everything about, and then that's when Lawler was coming in working with Nick. Buckley, gluco? See they were -ffiliated with Awa Senate Tonio was in. That's when Lawler would come in. And at the time, I think Laura Jarrett was having some heat with each other, but the TV's situation, and and then you telling me about the fabulous ones. Here's a, you know, a stay in line, Steve Kern, you know, they was put together as a fabulous ones now. But Lawler was gonna go off -sition and he wanted to know. The baby face tag TV wanted when he went off to have one together. And he knew Robert from Ricky from a long time ago when I was a Senate Tonio he walked up to me, man. Listen, Reggie, come back home. Did this whole situation with me? We went over it. In a Steve I was ready to go home and my run with kit. Lucas was just about over. I can tell you know. But they'll give you wrong. I did real good under Tony Blanchard. Even gave me a first right dinner as a single wrestler to rushing off with mic. Buck WinCo and other big wrestlers. When I was there at time. But when we came back to Memphis, Robert both decided that we came in. And we didn't even have a gaming Abe before you talk about. We didn't have a given. Yeah. But listen before you came back, and you were done they're working for Joe blanche to southwest championship sports. How was the vibe down there because Joa just broken away from Fritsch from world class, and and add formed that south? Championship sports. How would how the houses there when you guys were down there and was that territory thriving? Yes, don't get me wrong. I mean, we didn't sell out everywhere we went, but we get great business. And I had a great talent you've ever cowboy Scott, Casey sure, he was going to be together train me to get into business. But I ended up going with Chris Adams. Yeah. He was good hand. Yeah. Dude. Yes. He was he was taught maybe so you had a lot of great workers there. And you know, we grew. So tremendous houses, I get time. I thought it did great the territory didn't die. Right. You understanding. They didn't go broke. So we had to be doing good business. You understand me? We had a, you know, had some good good houses. A matter of fact that we left there. And I think they still stay in business without six years. Okay. So you unit back here in Tennessee. And lawler's presenting you this idea..
