Lori Loughlin, husband plead guilty in U.S. college admissions scandal
"Actress Lori Loughlin and her husband masa Bojan only have pleaded guilty to federal charges in the college bribery scandal for paying half a million dollars to get their two daughters into U. S. C. but the judge still hasn't decided if he's going to accept their plea deal with prosecutors that calls for Lachlan to spend two months in prison and her husband five months Loyola Marymount university law professor Laurie Levenson says the deal is a bit of a surprise I think the prosecutors here realize that Lori Laughlin's defense team was much more aggressive than the defense team for other defendants and that might be why she got such a good deal the judge scheduled the sentencing hearings for late August but didn't indicate when he will decide on whether to accept the deal prosecutors say the couple funneled money through a sham charity operated by college admissions consultant Rick singer singer has pleaded guilty to orchestrating the whole scheme that led of course to dozens of other wealthy people being

Lori Loughlin and her husband agree to plead guilty in admissions scandal
"Court papers indicate actress Lori Loughlin and her husband Mossimo G. a newly will plead guilty in the college admissions scandal under a plea deal she would spend two months in prison he would get five months part of the reason I think Laughlin was able to get such a favorable deal is that she and her husband were very aggressive in going after the prosecution's case and showing some of the weaknesses with their key witness Rick singer and how they plan to cross examine him during the trial legal analyst Laurie Levenson says the pandemic could play a part in what happens next we're in the middle of a pandemic and it's not at all clear that the sentence will have to be served right away first of all you have to have the guilty plea and then the sentencing and then I'm sure that they're going to raise with the court that it's not particularly safe to go to prison at this time actress Felicity Huffman who also pleaded guilty served less than fourteen

Lori Loughlin's daughters shown in rowing photos released by prosecutors
"First things first without the Laurie Lachlan College scandal. Because there is new information out. There is new photos out okay. So we're getting our first look at the infamous rowing photos the daughters one that you see There's two photos it said to be a Libya. Jade and Bella both using these exercise rowing machine there among the exhibit submitted by federal prosecutors prosecutors claim. These are the photos taken by the couple to help get their girls into U. S. C. Just a reminder learner has been accused of paying five hundred thousand dollars to get their daughters into the school as a bribe in their trials scheduled it for October. They face a maximum of fifty years in prison in like millions of dollars in fines if they are found guilty. So new photos here. It's not it's the photos are not great right. Those are not good but to me. It's the actual verbiage in the emails that have also been released. That's where I think they're big trouble. Have you read some of the emails scripts near but we already knew about the emails scripts that we had already gotten bits and pieces of it. So there's no we really does good. He's telling his accounting good news. My daughter's in the USC bad news. I had to work the system. I mean that's like a full on admission yet but whenever you do anything they tell you do and work the system as best as possible. It's not about doing anything illegal. Working the system doesn't mean you know doing something illegal. He didn't say I did something illegal. Or I paid XYZ off. I feel like this is not as damning as we were told. It was going to be when we first got. The the proof of the pictures are the description of the pictures. It was paddles it was uniforms. It was these stage big. You know lit things and now I'm looking at this photo. I have three or four. Does in my own myself of me on a roy machine like this is that this is what Rick Singer. Who is that really work singer? He's the one who's been orchestrated this whole thing. He's the one that convinced all these parents to pay all this money. He specifically wrote an email to Massimo. Say Get pictures of the girls on an ER G in workout clothes like a real athlete as well like I say. I need this information for the PDF for transcript her test scores and then I need a portfolio basically saying that she is a rowing athlete and that it said it would help to get a photo on rowing machine. So they're complaining. The response was okay. Fantastic will get to you and then submitted that photo one month later so they did follow all the instructions senior gave him now. Does that show that Necessarily like yeah. You're right. Maybe not the most damning because it's all sounds or should by rick singer and they were like isn't GonNa get them off now. What defeated they were. But what might get them off because right now the case is no longer. Did they do something illegal? Remember Lori Massimo went back and filed a claim to dismiss the case because they said the investigator in Bullied ric singer into lying and also concealed evidence. If I am a lawyer which I talked to a lawyer this morning she said the prosecution. Put those photos out to distract from what's really going on right now. And it's the claim that they think that they will withholding evidence if a court in a judge and a jury sees that these investigators have withheld evidence. They could actually walk away from this. And I'm just we all know how. Pr Works we know when some heat's coming on as you know you just put out a photo here. Put out a photo there distract from what's really happening. I just think that that's what the investigators are doing. And it's not the photos that they said that they had. I mean I was waiting for like in a boat. I was looking for. Bodo of her in a boat with a panel. I will agree with that. I did think that the photos were going to be not just a workout clothes on a workout Roy. Wishy I thought Gary Agree. I thought it was GONNA be like fake like hails. The team that we were on Made it so big thought. The disposables are so bad but I think the problem is is that this is exactly what risk roofing are asked of them and he delivered it exactly And He seems to be whether he got completely fooled or he was In tuned to what was truly going on either way he followed the steps to get his kids into school that worked the system that went around the normal system right depending on how you know if they did withheld information withhold information. That really you know. Throw them off the court back. You throw a court system completely off. I think I think Lori is a very smart woman and so as Massimo and I think if they knew that there was no way to get out of this or when this case they would not spend the time the money in the resources on fighting this much but I have to believe that in their minds if they have an inkling of a doubt that this was done in the most professional way are that there was no malpractice when investigating something. They must know something they have to know something in Washington. The prosecution has not come out and said No. This was all done by the book. We were crude this in court. You will see every step of the way. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that I would fight to. Yeah I mean I think it don't look good for them. I think they make up and I'm a little surprised that they are fighting. This far the evidence is stacked against them. I'm really worried about them. I'm worried about and the sense of you know just you know. They deserve to get punishment for what happened. But I really like fifty years in jail per person like her parent. That's like insane. I would hope that they would never get angry Close to that not for something like this. I don't think they're saying they didn't do anything wrong. But if somebody told me if I kidnapped someone and then I was getting charged for attempted murder first degree murder. I would fight it because yes I. Maybe I did wrong but I didn't do that. That is the point in. That's what the judicial system is four. It's they come to you with a charge. Make sure that it's proper that's just I think that's what is now the main thing and make sure you go about it. In a in a real way in a cohesive way by the book we are. We are trial by fire. But we want something that's fair. That's what they're doing. I really do I will. We will wait and see again. Goes the October so kimble affiliates been so long I actually had to like remind myself I kind of forgot about this whole light. College emission scandal. "Them Wall Street Journal reporter Melissa Corn. Thanks a lot. Thank you a new report. From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that the outbreak of superbugs which are drug resistant. Bacteria and fungi is worse than previously. Thought this is an update to a report back in two thousand thirteen in which the CDC sounded the alarm about the dangers of these Bugs Wall Street Journal. Final senior writer. Betsy McKay joins us with the story. So betsy what are the latest numbers on infections and deaths caused by superbox. So this report court found that There nearly three point one million infections and that includes forty eight thousand seven hundred deaths every year in the US from drug resistant bacteria. Fungi and it also includes a pathogen known as C. difficile which is not drug resistant itself but it has fueled or kind of unleashed by Use of antibiotics and the heavy use of antibiotics contributes to this higher toll. Yes definitely heavier us. Overuse of antibiotics. It puts pressure on bacteria and they develop their own defense mechanisms which which basically build resistance to these drugs and these super bugs are spreading beyond hospitals. Aren't they yeah you know for many years. They were confined largely to hospitals spitaels and they are generally known as bugs that appear in hospitals. But they're spreading more now in other healthcare facilities nursing homes for example sample and also just in communities. How many superbugs are we talking about? Well the CDC identified eighteen that it is particularly concerned about it and it ranked them in summer. Urgent Threats Some are you know less concerning but still have great concern and they also identified a watchlist of breath bugs which are not causing major threat today in the US but could easily. But isn't there some good news. According to this report the number of annual deaths from from drug resistant bacteria and fungi has declined significantly since the last report. What's happened since two thousand thirteen is that the number of death jeff has fallen in the CDC's said that's largely due to some really good efforts? Strong efforts made by hospitals to reduce the the spread of these infections in their hospitals bidder cleaning better use of antibiotics And so that's where the reductions have largely have largely calm but the number number of deaths still Really crazy high and there are new superbug popping up Arthur. Yeah more. Bugs are definitely emerging from overseas the last this time the CDC did a report like this There was a fungus known as candidate oriented. which wasn't even really on anyone's radar it was I found in Asia In two thousand nine now it has spread all over the world and it's really on everyone's radar so these things crop up and start to spread really really fast. Isn't the big worry here betsy besides the fact that these books can be fatal. That antibiotic resistant. Drugs are complicating medical care for patients. Isn't that sort of the bottom line here yet. There are a couple of things one is that if you develop one of these infections there may not be a drug that can you know. Doctors may not have anything sort of an arms race right. New Bugs emerge doctors find ways to treat them. They develop resistance those drugs and then can't help the patients. The other problem is that it has complicated care for for chronic conditions. People who need surgery people with diabetes people with cancer there are more prone to infection and so the risk tsk of being infected with a drug resistant bug is making it harder to take care of these Folks Wall Street Journal Senior Writer Betsy Mckay thanks a lot. Thank thank you and now some other stories were watching today Walmart. JC Penney and Viacom report earnings before the Bell Fed Chair. The first public hearing in the House of Representatives additives impeachment inquiry against President trump unfolded over five long hours on Wednesday. Democrats said the evidence clearly shows president. Trump abused his power by I. With holding both military aid to Ukraine and denying the new president of Ukraine a meeting in the White House until the Ukrainians agreed to investigate what Democrats had done in Ukraine rain and specifically what former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter had done in Ukraine and in that regard there was one important bit of new information. There was testimony that Gordon Sunland. who was president? Trump's ambassador to the European Union place the phone call directly to president trump filling him in on Ukrainian plans to launch these investigations. And that a bachelor Sunland told those who are listening listening that president trump cared more about investigating the Biden's than he did about anything else regarding Ukraine that puts president trump more deeply into the question at hand at the same sometime. They'll Republicans said there was no evidence of any misbehavior because ultimately Ukraine got its military aid. And because it got that military aid without launching any formal investigations into the Biden's so therefore no offense but the disagreement ran much deeper than that between Democrats and Republicans. They couldn't even agree on which presidential election in the United States as was being interfered with here. Democrats clearly argued that the election that hand the one that's coming up. In Two thousand twenty was the one that was being interfered with by Ukrainians because president trump trump wanted damaging information on Joe Biden potentially his toughest Democratic opponent in that twenty two thousand election Republicans by contrast wanted to talk about the last asked election the two thousand sixteen presidential election their assertion that Ukrainians had interfered in that election. "All right. Welcome to the mail bag. And boy is it full. This is eight Delaney broadcasting from Jekyll island not too far away from a place. I was a few weeks ago. So then I remember my savannah trip. I talked about all the history there, and there's plenty of history here on Jekyll island, and I'll talk about that in our upcoming shows, but here in the mail bag how about this one. This one comes to us from Alex who says listen Hoffman being very contrite apparently in the courtroom. I give her credit because she could bailed he could have tried to come up with some story, and instead decided to plead guilty, and I dunno Kate. I think I think it's atrocious. What happened, but the fifteen thousand and then you re deeper into the details of what she was doing to help her daughter with the SAT's, and there's no excuse for it. But I would say they should lean. Little lighter on our letter pay the fine. And that's it. I mean ridiculous. This Rick singer. He's ready to throw everybody down the alley while he made all the money. So, you know, I don't know she pled guilty. She admitted that kind of stuff I'm just kind of thinking just let her do, you know, time just let her do some kind of community service for a couple of years if that's possible and forget the whole doing time. Yeah. You know? It's scary is it's a roll the dice. Can you imagine worried about that like and again, I don't feel sorry for her. Because they they knew what they did. They broke the law. I mean, they flat out cheated just got caught in this web. So she pays the twenty thousand dollar fine. Maybe she gets supervised release. You know, what for however long? She's going to be sentenced on September thirteenth in think of Martha Stewart member. All the jokes about camp cupcake. It's not a cupcake to do anytime. I can't imagine regardless, but this is a felony. So I'll be curious to see what the judge does in this case. I mean, they said the judge said do you realize what you're doing you're waving your rights here up? It was interesting as her daughter got an SAT score of fourteen twenty out of a possible. Sixteen hundred about four hundred points higher than her preliminary SAT exam a year earlier. So I don't know. She said she was ashamed of the pain she caused and all that sort of stuff, but you have this situation, and you have Lori singer pleading not guilty the other actress and they allegedly paid a boatload of money for their two daughters. So how does this all turn out? You know, you got me sentencing wise, it's just the judge depends on the judge and how the judge feels like feels as though, hey, it's a felony. And if it was somebody else would they get jail time, or what you know, kind of in one way kind of agree with you that just let them do community service and be serious about it and do something else. But in these other prisons, I mean a couple of years or something that would be insane. If that happened, but I can't read the tea leaves on it. You know, I just don't know just move to another one. This one is from Joseph who says Kate you should be glad that you don't live in the northeast anymore..

"Seems to be the mastermind this again, everything is alleged Rick singer. He was a bail independent college, admissions counselor. And he started doing that about twelve thirteen years ago, then about six years ago is apparently when he came upon this this this this scheme where he realizes that realize that schools have a couple of exceptions to the usual way of admitting students one is they would have designated slots for admission for up, particularly good athletes. So of course football team would get a number in the basketball team. But those would be too obvious. So he always he went towards these these miners sports. Cool water poll, and then approached those coaches knowing that these coaches aren't getting paid anything near where the head football. Coach would be getting paid and say, you know, hey, how would you like to make a couple of hundred thousand bucks, we'll send you somebody will send you an application for a student, and you designate that student as a recruited student for the crew for the sailing team for the water polo tennis team. And in tennis was one of the big ones because he also had working on this scheme. A couple of guys who ran a a tennis facility in southern California. Who would then say, oh, yes, this person is young man. Or woman is a, you know, accomplished tennis player, and they would put together, you know, this portfolio including kill sometimes. Photoshop photos, sometimes stock photos of other young people. And I understand that. But what you still makes you wonder doesn't it Bill how they got away with it. I mean, because even then while it's not a high profile sport would the other kids on the tennis team and their parents go that kid can't play at this level, something fishy. Here would never play. They would come up. This is gonna reading between the lines of the indictment today would say, oh, we got injured. But they're admitted now, and they they quit the team. They can't force them to play. They weren't scholarship athletes that were just admitted. So as long as the parents paid the Twitchen they were admitted, they you know, they stay in the school. What do you think of this for a penalty? Carol you're on WGN. What did you say you're on the air? I was just going to mention that the stars and movie stars or screen stars that has been accused of paying money to get their kids into those schools that in fact, they should then be fine. "Doing this show. Live old stump brewing company for our next gas. Bruce in Pomona this Friday. Okay. So we're going through this college admissions bribery scandal and the guy at the center of it was the one wearing the wire Rick singer is his name he is considered cooperating witness won a phone call of June of last year. He describes the scene the scheme excuse me on how they do this. So he says, okay. So who we are what we do is we help the wealthiest families in the US get their kids into school every year there. A group of families especially for from where I am right now in the bay area Palo Alto. They want guarantees they want this thing done. They don't want to be messing around with this thing, and they all want in at certain schools. So what I do is I opened side doors there's a front door, which means you get in on your own the back doors through institutional, advancement, which is ten times as much money. So I think that's like putting your name on the medical school or whatever. And then he says, and I've created this side door, and because the back door when you go through institutional, advancement is, you know, everybody's got a friend of a friend or who knows somebody? But there's no guarantee my family's want guarantee. So if you said to me, here's our grades. Here's our scores. Here's our ability. And we want to go to ex school you give me one or two schools, and I'll go after these schools and get a guaranteed done. So by the by the time the summer of her senior year before her senior year, hopefully, we'll have this thing done, and in that fall, you already know she's in it's done and you make a financial commitment. It depends on what school you want may determine how much that actually is. Yeah. So there's two prongs to the his plan. There's two prongs that make up the side door thing that he's done. One of them would require the parents to get have their kids have their students. Get extra time on these college entrance exams, the SAT or the ACT, and they do that by having him diagnosed with a fake learning disability or simply requesting extra time it cetera. By the way, that was that was the part that pissed off my daughter the most when I was explaining to her yesterday the extra time get extra time or they do it in a private environment. The second thing is or isn't that that testing aspect of it this cooperating witness one Rick singer, Rick? He would bring in his own Proctor to these private or semi private areas are places that these kids were taking their tests, and those proctors would either help the kids on the test or alter the answers after they took it to give them. A better score. The second aspect of it was the parents would create fake athletic profiles. This guy had a whole formula for this fake athletic profiles for their kids which included in some cases, photo shopping their kids faces onto people who are actual athletes, which would then allow college coaches and administrators who were getting paid off get their kids into the school as athletic recruits. I mean, just the fact that this is the way that's the way it's working goes beyond anything that we saw in terms of just a here's a million bucks for the building that you need Ron Ron actually wrote in with a question and he says, hey with a private university US's. In example, what laws were violated. I mean, certainly, this is a moral issue. But what laws would be violated that would require the FBI, of course, dealing with interstate crime. And the testing is just one example of that the testing where they were fraudulently coming up with these with these test scores a lot of times, they were flying to different states to do it and the money, obviously would cross state lines. They're using mail fraud mail fraud, clearly for that sort of thing the Henry as parents wanted to get their daughter into Georgetown. But the feds realized as they were digging around in this investigation that she was awful at tennis. This is from the court. This is from the court filing the Henrikus. Daughter daughter's application was submitted to Georgetown, in addition to the falsified essay the application falsely indicated she played club tennis all through high school listed her as having a top fifty ranking in the United States Tennis Association. And then the footnote in the legal documents says at her best she appears to have ranked two hundred and seventh in northern California. And the under twelve girls division with an overall win loss record of two and eight. That's only two more wins than I had by the way, her dad. Her dad is the CEO of some huge hedge fund. I think it's called Hercules capital. He had to step down because Hercules capital stocks started dropping yesterday when his name when his name was involved in this. Hey, y'all remember how USC put out a statement to all its alumni saying US victim? No, it's not. And we have the proof when we come back here, and Shannon will continue Monica. "To this guy named Rick singer to help juice their kids chances some of that was by helping them kind of get great test scores because Rick singer would kind of have his guy go in take a test for the students or fix their answers on task while a Proctor was looking the other way, the other main way was that Rick singer would bribe college coaches to pretend they were recruiting kids as athletes who were not athletes them get into the college two of the parents accused in this case Oscar nominee actress, Felicity Huffman, full house store.
