President Biden says he's going to be making a statement on border security on Thursday. He made that comment in front of The White House after returning from Kentucky on Wednesday earlier he told reporters were working out the details now with regards to a trip to the southern border. The orchestrator of the highly publicized college admissions cheating scandal is headed for prison, Matt mattson reports Rick singer was sentenced to three and a half years behind bars on Wednesday. He was the mastermind behind the so called varsity blues scandal in which he received bribes from wealthy parents to help their kids cheat on exams in order to get in top universities. The case resulted in numerous arrests, including the convictions of well-known Hollywood actresses, Lori Loughlin, and Felicity Huffman. Singer pleaded guilty to multiple crimes, including money laundering in 2019. This comes as the capital city deals with overcrowding, starting in April, families are eligible to receive around $7700 per child to move to less populated areas in order to help revitalize the countryside and boost the falling birth rate. It's not the first time the government has used financial incentives to get people to move out of Tokyo, but this program is the most generous to date. I'm Brian shook. It's the latest sign that a technology slump is deep in the reduction is concentrated in the firm's corporate ranks. Earlier, we spoke with Bloomberg tech reporter Spencer soper. This is like a little more than a percent of their overall workforce granted. Most of that workforce are warehouse workers who move inventory around and this 18,000 is going to come out of the corporate workers. It's largely going to be its most mature part of its business. It's online store, as well as some of the brick and mortar initiatives that they've launched recently. And then also, it's going to be like human resources functions like recruiting and onboarding people because they're not going to be doing that much because they're not hiring as many people. It's interesting that they acknowledge that they hired too many people during the pandemic, so when we see these cuts now, is it because of falling demand or that they just think they hire too many managers and they don't need them. Yeah, it's part of laying leveling off and it's also the fact that because things leveled off, Amazon is always hired like crazy. And generally when they decide that they don't need a team, they've always been able to kind of absorb people within some other new division that's doing well are growing. And so that's not the case now. So the rare thing here is that they had to resort to a layoff. Bloomberg Czech reporter Spencer soper, the job cuts are the biggest yet for tech companies in the current slowdown. Dell is reportedly planning to stop using semiconductors made in China by 2024. Then he says that Dell also told suppliers to significantly reduce the amount of other components produced in the country. The tsien services PMI was 48 last month that was not as steep as November's 46.7 and it did beat the estimate of 46.8. "He received a non prosecution agreement in order to turn state's evidence against the coach and the businessman. The dad. And so, you know, as somebody described it to me, he has more baggage than the Greyhound bus. And the jury's going to have to make their determination as to whether they believe this guy or if they believe the defense, which is, hey, he's the criminal. He's the only evidence that there's any kind of a plot between these two friends who, by the way, have a net zero on the balance sheet between them. So classic drive. Classic flipped witness and do you know what happened to that? I mean, he was never prosecuted, nothing happened for him admittedly taking 90% of that. Yeah. Yeah, that's a key point. With a non prosecution deal, you have to complete your part before the then go before the judge and the prosecution says he fulfilled his part. You can send him to nothing. They're kind of has to be a fulfillment of the contract by the witness. So if he doesn't succeed and convincing the jury, I still think he doesn't get prosecuted, but it doesn't mean that the prosecutors will get creative with something else, but I think the thing that overhangs his entire trial is the same Boston U.S. attorney's office is the one that brought us the operation varsity blues. Which was the nationwide college admissions scandal run by a consultant named Rick singer, and that was where people were wealthy and celebrity parents paid very easy to track bribes where they either had people cheat to get their children, their children's admission scores changed on tests or they got they paid to have their children recruited as athletes for sports. They sometimes never even played. So the Boston area is very well steeped in this whole idea of rich parents were buying their kids way into college And they can't unhear that. You know, they can't not know that. And I think they're supposed to just put it aside. And say, because the prosecution has been very careful not to mention varsity blues in this case. Because I think they don't want any tank to come in on that. But it's the gorilla in the room, all the same. Even though these parents in this coach have no connection whatsoever to the players in the varsity blues scandal, it's still in the room. "Get their children into elite colleges were found guilty on all charges in the first trial stem from the national college admissions scandal that ensnared dozens of families Former win resorts executive gman Abdul Aziz and private equity investor John B Wilson were convicted Friday by a Boston jury Join me as Bloomberg legal reporter Patricia hurtado So pat how long was the jury out Well the jury deliberated just a little over ten hours over two days And it was a categorical win for the government They convicted both of these two dads who were accused of paying bribes to get their kids to facilitate their kids entrance into elite schools a convicted of every single count And it was there was one question from the jury Earlier on Friday morning and it was a complicated charge It was called mail fraud wire fraud conspiracy to commit mail fraud wire fraud best of honest services mail fraud and wire fraud And it was a complicated theory but the government's charge it was like this huge umbrella account that was basically encompassing the concept of the parents paid bribes to corrupt people and by doing this bribing they robbed the colleges of the honest services of their employees to do the right thing and do their job properly and not give swaths to kids whose parents paid bribes So the jury asked about this And the judge basically gave the jury on a smorgasbord of opportunities to convict them just on that one count alone So there were like substances accounts that the jury found guilty on every single count It was quite stunning The defense had argued vociferously that they had not paid brides And if they had paid money they understood them to be quote unquote donations to the schools So that the money they gave to this mastermind this call is corrupt college counselor named William Rick singer who had played guilty and agreed to cooperate against them They said he was the con man who had lied to them and misled them about what the true function of the money was going to be That it was legitimate development The prosecutors managed to get this verdict even without the testimony of the mastermind Rick singer How did that go Well what they did is they did play the wiretaps of these men discussing these parents discussing with singer their plan And there was a dad from Massachusetts from the cape area John Wilson is private equity executive and he was on talking to singer about possibly arranging to pay $500,000 for each of his two daughters So a $1 million to facilitate his daughter's interest into Stanford and Harvard And then he asked if he could get a two for one deal So he was haggling for a discount So he didn't want to pay more than a million And the government said that he that was showing his willingness to engage in a dirty deal And the other dad gamal Abdelaziz and he's the former wind resorts executive He was on tape talking to singer Singer actually was bragging to him that he wanted to use this fake profile that they used to get his daughter into USC as they purported basketball star that he wanted to use it for other fake athletes And Abdullah's chuckles and says I love it So the government said this is the true nature and the true understanding these two parents had that they knowingly understood that singer was corrupting the process And so it's because singer wasn't on the stand The parents didn't have an opportunity to try to make a case that he was the mastermind and he was pulling the strings Right and they were they were hoping to get him on the stand because there's plenty of occasions singer had these no teat written to install that said the government agents want me to quote unquote then the truth for example And the parents really wanted to go after singer his machinations He did apparently tell them at certain periods of time sometimes you stay with quote unquote donation wink wink or sometimes to set then when he was cooperating he changed the story and suddenly the script was it was a bribe and that their parents insisted that they had never known it was a pure bribe What the government did in this case and the judge allowed it as he allowed the government the prosecutors to put in evidence from other parents including emails their machinations and then they called one of these dads who played guilty His name was Bruce isaacson He's a Northern California businessman He and his wife played guilty to getting pain bribes to singer to get their kids into college So this dad testified about his mindset So the government said you can infer from the testimony of this other dad what these two gaps were thinking The defense vociferously argued against this they said it's unfair unfair evidence included other crimes being done that these parents didn't have anything to do with And the defense has argued they have a lot of appeals issues when they challenge it at the first circuit Coming up next what might the sentences.

"They make a TurboTax and QuickBooks. They're buying mail. Chimp for $12 billion. This is the largest ever acquisition of a company mail chimp. That received no outside funding they grew would just internal financing as they become a $12 billion company, which in and of itself is unbelievable. Uh, first trial of varsity blues kicking off yesterday. It's hard to believe. How many How far are we ended this now? And Rick Singer is still a free man. That's the hard part to believe. Course he's the man who Who was caught orchestrating all this and then kind of turned state's evidence and is cooperating and helping put a lot of other folks behind bars. But He has yet to be sentenced. And we'll talk a little bit more about a really interesting article in the journal this morning about Facebook, knowing That Instagram is toxic for teen girls. But doing very little to address it. We'll talk a little bit more about that as well. Here are the numbers this morning. As we're about to get off and trade, not to mention taxes, uh and and the Democrats tax proposal as put forward yesterday, the Dow is up to 62 yesterday, closing at 34,000 and 69. It will be up another 100 points off the opening bell today. NASDAQ was lower yesterday but will open slightly higher this morning. Gold up five. Oil up one half of 1% nearing $71 a barrel 10 Year bond yield 1.31 All right. Thanks so much. Kelly will talk to you soon. Another comment now from Republican Governor Rhonda Santa's of Florida We now have 25 Republican governors have spoken out against President Biden's mandates. They say they will fight them, and this is what the Santos had to say yesterday. We are fighting back against the Biden mandate as well, and we're working through different things that they were going to be doing in the state of Florida, But But suffice it to say, um Nobody should lose their job over this issue. We have to protect people's jobs. We understand what's on the line. We understand people are raising families. We understand they have bills to pay. And the last thing you should want to do is plunged people into destitution, potentially Who have been faithfully serving and working in a variety of capacities throughout this whole time, So so this these mandates are overreaches and they will be very destructive for a lot of really, really good people. And so we're on board to fight back both in terms of any of the government with our law being applied in the fines, but then anything involving the private we're going to be working to provide protections for people because people should not face a choice of losing their job. There are people who have already walked off the job. They just send done. I'm not you You are going to make me take this vaccine. No, I'm out. In some states. They already have mandatory vaccinations in place. And like, you know, we're hearing about hospital maternity wards that are shutting down because health care workers are walking off and you know, sometimes some of these reports that are coming out about crowded. I see you units or whatever you wonder is that because they don't Maybe they maybe have the bets, but they don't have the people because the people are leaving coming up at 7 15. It's interesting. You bring that up. We're going to play some clips coming up in less than an hour now. From the hospital in North Carolina. Where they were doing a conference call a video conference call right as their marketing executives. I believe right, and they were talking about how they could inflate artificially inflate their covid numbers. They needed to scare people. That's what they said. That's what they said. We said. We've got the clips. It's, uh it's making all the rounds and we're going to roll them out for you coming up in less than an hour from here from now, By the way, Dr Fauci is now acknowledged to CNN that Natural immunity may provide advanced covid protection. Oh, because they were saying it wasn't as good. Yeah. Now he said, Yeah, maybe. Maybe. Is this guy I know. Yeah. I mean, you couldn't draw them up. No, no. Well, I mean, he's oh, America's doctor with the new point of view every hour. Yeah, All right. We'll bring them all to you. Okay, we'll right back. "My guest is renowned constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe and analysis of important legal issues. Cases in headline. Is this essentially the fifth circuit haunting. He has presided over Called hot bench of the Supreme Court Bloomberg law with June Grasso From Bloomberg Radio. Welcome to the Bloomberg Wall Show. I'm John Grasso ahead. In this hour. At least five lawsuits have been filed over one of the country's most aggressive laws curbing voting. And the first trial in the college admissions scandal. The varsity blues sting exploded into public view in 2019, with dozens of parents across the country arrested for allegedly paying hundreds of thousands of dollars. To get their kids into elite universities. Most of the parents have pleaded guilty, but jury selection began on Wednesday in the case against two parents. Who have pleaded not guilty and are among the select few have elected to fight their case in court. Joining me is Bloomberg legal reporter Patricia Hurtado has been covering this case since the beginning. So Pat tell us about the two fathers who are going to be tried. 40 parents were indicted. By the U. S attorney in Massachusetts. 33 pled guilty. Six of them are fighting the charges and one got a pardon from President Trump just before he left office. Tube two dads. Are fighting the charges in this first trial. It's going to start opening arguments next Monday, September 13th It's John Wilson to the private equity investor and who was the former Staples and Gap executive? And a gentleman named Gamal Abdel Aziz and he is a former executive for rep Resort and he operated in Macau and Hong Kong. Most is upon I understand. So these two parents are charged with the scheme. Rick Singer, the mastermind of the state had two different schemes. One was to fix before or boost the college entrance have scores kids. Whose parents paid money and he would fix the answers are a test with to take the test for the kids. Out in their name. So, um, The second game that he also was involved in is called the side door. And that was the back door would be if your parents donated $7 million and you're getting into college of your choice because you've given them a new athletic building or you, Jim. The side door is you don't have to donate as much money you could donate gives us $200,000 to wreck singer as its charitable donation and that he would help With friends and connections at all these universities and get the applicant students and as a purported athletic recruits, so it's like a jock for designated sport. For these two gap. Um John Wilson, the former private equity executive is accused of allegedly trying to get his three kids into college is the first was the sun. Who he allegedly paid singer $200,000. And to get his kid in as a water polo player. The dad says, But my kid really was the water polo player. There was no faking involved. And I gave $200,000 to singer. I just didn't know that he told me he was going to give it to us. See? And as a matter of fact, 100,000 ended up at USC and I got to thank you know, for my donation. Meanwhile, a singer pocket at the next 100,000 And then he's accused of allegedly paying a million dollars to singer $500,000 a pop for the two twin daughters to get one into Stanford. As the purported athlete and one into Harvard as a purported athlete. The dad, Wilson says that his two daughters were tested beautifully and had excellent if not near perfect. College sports scores so they could have gotten into the college of their choice. Stands the dad camel FLNC needs to win except from Irwin executive he's accused of trying to get his daughter into USC as a purported basketball recruit, he says He didn't need to pay a bribe because she was good enough athletes. There are four other parents who are scheduled to go on trial next year. Do you know why these two are being tried together? Um, I think it's probably it was the way the judge paired the case down because there were too many parents to go on trial at the same time. Then he made a decision to do groups of four. Originally there were eight parents finding the charges to flat out recently just support trial there to mothers fled out. Um, I believe also the reason these parents prepared together. Is there a similarities in their cases? The alleged fried pain had to deal with the University of Southern California. Is USC on trial here in a sense Well, if USC and the process and the parents are making hay they subpoenaed and then remember, I mentioned there was a dad that got a part. Many of the parents and U. S. C was one of the schools that everybody wanted to get into. It was like a hot popular school for these West Coast parents. So somebody's parents went after the U. S. C and admissions processes and they just peed of documents, and eventually they got what they call it Smoking God, which is an eight page fruit cheese. Of names of students. Who they knew at USC was called the VIP lift, and it was submitted for admission over a period of years. And I think there's several dozen students but the pages it goes like an eight page Excel spreadsheet. And it explains their connection, whether they were good for quote unquote 15 million to the best golf team, or three million of US Exporting Center, the names that redacted But these are the list of people including U. S. U. S. C as the I P coming up on the Bloomberg laws show. I'll continue this conversation with Bloomberg Legal reporter Patricia her title and we'll talk about the defenses that the parents are likely to raise..

Lori Loughlin's daughters shown in rowing photos released by prosecutors

"First things first without the Laurie Lachlan College scandal. Because there is new information out. There is new photos out okay. So we're getting our first look at the infamous rowing photos the daughters one that you see There's two photos it said to be a Libya. Jade and Bella both using these exercise rowing machine there among the exhibit submitted by federal prosecutors prosecutors claim. These are the photos taken by the couple to help get their girls into U. S. C. Just a reminder learner has been accused of paying five hundred thousand dollars to get their daughters into the school as a bribe in their trials scheduled it for October. They face a maximum of fifty years in prison in like millions of dollars in fines if they are found guilty. So new photos here. It's not it's the photos are not great right. Those are not good but to me. It's the actual verbiage in the emails that have also been released. That's where I think they're big trouble. Have you read some of the emails scripts near but we already knew about the emails scripts that we had already gotten bits and pieces of it. So there's no we really does good. He's telling his accounting good news. My daughter's in the USC bad news. I had to work the system. I mean that's like a full on admission yet but whenever you do anything they tell you do and work the system as best as possible. It's not about doing anything illegal. Working the system doesn't mean you know doing something illegal. He didn't say I did something illegal. Or I paid XYZ off. I feel like this is not as damning as we were told. It was going to be when we first got. The the proof of the pictures are the description of the pictures. It was paddles it was uniforms. It was these stage big. You know lit things and now I'm looking at this photo. I have three or four. Does in my own myself of me on a roy machine like this is that this is what Rick Singer. Who is that really work singer? He's the one who's been orchestrated this whole thing. He's the one that convinced all these parents to pay all this money. He specifically wrote an email to Massimo. Say Get pictures of the girls on an ER G in workout clothes like a real athlete as well like I say. I need this information for the PDF for transcript her test scores and then I need a portfolio basically saying that she is a rowing athlete and that it said it would help to get a photo on rowing machine. So they're complaining. The response was okay. Fantastic will get to you and then submitted that photo one month later so they did follow all the instructions senior gave him now. Does that show that Necessarily like yeah. You're right. Maybe not the most damning because it's all sounds or should by rick singer and they were like isn't GonNa get them off now. What defeated they were. But what might get them off because right now the case is no longer. Did they do something illegal? Remember Lori Massimo went back and filed a claim to dismiss the case because they said the investigator in Bullied ric singer into lying and also concealed evidence. If I am a lawyer which I talked to a lawyer this morning she said the prosecution. Put those photos out to distract from what's really going on right now. And it's the claim that they think that they will withholding evidence if a court in a judge and a jury sees that these investigators have withheld evidence. They could actually walk away from this. And I'm just we all know how. Pr Works we know when some heat's coming on as you know you just put out a photo here. Put out a photo there distract from what's really happening. I just think that that's what the investigators are doing. And it's not the photos that they said that they had. I mean I was waiting for like in a boat. I was looking for. Bodo of her in a boat with a panel. I will agree with that. I did think that the photos were going to be not just a workout clothes on a workout Roy. Wishy I thought Gary Agree. I thought it was GONNA be like fake like hails. The team that we were on Made it so big thought. The disposables are so bad but I think the problem is is that this is exactly what risk roofing are asked of them and he delivered it exactly And He seems to be whether he got completely fooled or he was In tuned to what was truly going on either way he followed the steps to get his kids into school that worked the system that went around the normal system right depending on how you know if they did withheld information withhold information. That really you know. Throw them off the court back. You throw a court system completely off. I think I think Lori is a very smart woman and so as Massimo and I think if they knew that there was no way to get out of this or when this case they would not spend the time the money in the resources on fighting this much but I have to believe that in their minds if they have an inkling of a doubt that this was done in the most professional way are that there was no malpractice when investigating something. They must know something they have to know something in Washington. The prosecution has not come out and said No. This was all done by the book. We were crude this in court. You will see every step of the way. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that I would fight to. Yeah I mean I think it don't look good for them. I think they make up and I'm a little surprised that they are fighting. This far the evidence is stacked against them. I'm really worried about them. I'm worried about and the sense of you know just you know. They deserve to get punishment for what happened. But I really like fifty years in jail per person like her parent. That's like insane. I would hope that they would never get angry Close to that not for something like this. I don't think they're saying they didn't do anything wrong. But if somebody told me if I kidnapped someone and then I was getting charged for attempted murder first degree murder. I would fight it because yes I. Maybe I did wrong but I didn't do that. That is the point in. That's what the judicial system is four. It's they come to you with a charge. Make sure that it's proper that's just I think that's what is now the main thing and make sure you go about it. In a in a real way in a cohesive way by the book we are. We are trial by fire. But we want something that's fair. That's what they're doing. I really do I will. We will wait and see again. Goes the October so kimble affiliates been so long I actually had to like remind myself I kind of forgot about this whole light. College emission scandal. That was the biggest thing that took the headlines last year. This year is like saying
