"Our KOMO Newsline. Rick Seaney, founder and CEO affair compared dot com is with us American also canceling flights. How is this going to affect summer travel? Rick first of all ticket prices are going to probably be up slightly because demand is probably likely to be a bit better than it was last year. And then, of course, the supplies down a little bit. So we'll see ticket price that I don't expect it to be up more than a few percentage points wouldn't expect him to go wildly high. But it also affects people because they're worried whether or not they're going to get their summer trip in. So it may cause them to start shopping a little earlier than they would a lot of people procrastinate when they buy tickets. I got a feeling a few of them might want to buy a little bit earlier this time. Well, here we are in mid April. I mean is. This too early to start shopping for your summer trip. Absolutely need to be shopping, for example, early June sort of mid June right now, and even now I guess with things that are going on right now, it might not be bad. At least kick the tires on late, June and early July travel. So definitely if you're going to especially if you're going to certain popular places where there's summer destinations you're going to see most people started to start shopping already doing this you need to get out there and start shopping for those tickets, you're going to some place. That's not super popular you probably pretty good. You probably still have a couple more weeks to stop. We only mentioned United and American. Do you expect other airlines will cancel these max flights? We'll southwest is cancelling about one hundred sixty flights a day. So in aggregate American southwestern United is about fifty thousand seat today less than they would have had had been flying those planes, and plus they were also taking delivery of new aircraft to those planes as well, which is also been stop. So it's it's quite a few people. You know, when you have a massive. Route system like we have in the United States. It's only about three or four percent of flights. And it doesn't seem like a lot. But it will change the dynamic a little bit. So people just need to stop a little bit earlier than they thought they would and just expect prices to be up a few dollars. I wouldn't expect him to be up tens of thousands of dollars. Just real quickly. Is there a downside to booking further out than the early June or July? Well, shop a little too early. I wouldn't be shopping for example for September and October right now that would be too early. The prices have dropped for those particular date. So you can shop a little too early. "Is what they're still. Stop. Ruin hake. Komo news. This is a common morning news rewind, the grounding of the Boeing seven thirty-seven max, eight fleet is having a ripple effect all across the country. Let's go to our KOMO Newsline. Rick Seaney, founder and CEO of farecomparEcom is with us. Good morning, Rick. Hey, good morning. How is this expected to affect summer travel plans? Definitely going to have a little bit of an effect. Now, you're talking about a little over three percent. For example, in the case of southwest even less flights on Americans and some of the other US carriers. But when you when you run that number up three percent, it's about a Super Bowl stadiums football worth of people each day that are potentially inconvenienced they're trying to rearrange flights. They may take some flights that aren't quite as full move does planes in. So they're rearranging, and they do this really well when they have storms variety of other things, but it's a lot more complicated. When it's going to drag on at least for weeks and potentially for months. Do you think this is going to shake the confidence of travelers in Boeing aircraft? I don't believe that that that's the case. I think that they definitely shade the confidence in for example, the FAA and some other things, but I just don't think as passengers when this when the flight start going we saw several groundings. For the last ten or fifteen years over certain types of issues as long as the safety record in the United States is really good at it has been really really good. I don't expect that can be a big issue. But it's gonna take some time. People are nervous. They're concerned. I was just looking at some of the social media feeds on southwestern American and some of the questions that were being asked a lot of people are concerned they're concerned about their loved ones flying on aircraft. It's really confusing because the max aircraft is still labeled 737 even though there's literally tens of thousands of other aircrafts that are seven thirty sevens. The grounding of the Boeing seven thirty-seven max eight fleet is having a ripple effect all across the country. Let's go to our KOMO Newsline. Rick Seaney, founder and CEO of farecomparEcom is with us. Good morning, Rick. Hey, good morning men. How is this expected to affect summer travel plans? It's definitely going to have a little bit of an effect. So they're rearranging, and they do this really well when they have storms and variety of other things, but it's a lot more complicated. When it's going to drag on at least for weeks and potentially for months. Do you think this is going to shake the confidence of travelers in Boeing aircraft? No, I don't believe that that. That's the case. I think that they definitely it may the confidence in for example, the FAA and some other things, but I just don't I think as passengers when this when the flight start going we saw several groundings over the last ten or fifteen years over certain types of issues as long as the safety record in the United States is really good at it has been really really good. I don't expect that can be a big issue. But it's gonna take some time. People are nervous. They're concerned. I was just looking at some of the social media feeds on south west in American and some of the questions that were being asked a lot of people are concerned they're concerned about their loved ones flying on aircraft. It's really confusing because the max aircraft is still labeled seven thirty seven. Even though there's literally tens of thousands of other aircrafts that are seven thirty sevens. That have nothing to do with that particular aircraft is all of this having any effect on fares. Or is it expected to? I haven't seen any big change for summertime fares. We're still seeing some pretty good deals for pre summer sale. So I don't see change there. "KTAR in-depth. We're joined this morning on the KTAR. Newsmaker line by Rick Seaney from fair to bear compare dot com. And we're gonna talk about airfares in a minute. But the story last week about American Airlines announcing that seven hundred flight attendants are being moved to other hubs. They were right up front immediately. And said we haven't changed our minds about Phoenix. We still have a major presence here, and we're going to continue to maintain a hub here. But Rick it does raise concerns even with them declaring that there's nothing to worry about about Phoenix's status with this airline, of course, when they acquired or when US Airways acquired American US Airways was a Phoenix help in your view is this something that might lead to American at some point down the road, deciding Phoenix is not a hub in their system. Well, I think it's the same sort of situation is Philadelphia, and you have other airlines like Cincinnati, and and places like Nashville that were hubs before and because of airline mergers. You don't need a bunch of hubs right next to each other. The whole point of a hub system is to have them just far enough apart where you can cover most of the United States, for example, three hubs and and having four or five just after airline. Mergers doesn't make a huge amount of sense. Now that being said Phoenix is a huge market for American. It's got about half the flights out of there. I'm looking for f- flight schedules for the next nine months, or so it looks like they've been growing, and they're adding some longer flights which means they're starting to do some of this point to point flying longer destinations like London, for example. So it looks like they're pretty committed there. But certainly moving around the flight attendants around after the merger now that they've got their flight scheduling system, all integrated probably is something that they they're just saying there. Refocusing the Phoenix status as a hub. And I think that's probably going to happen over the next four or five years. I do a lot of flying this time of year. And so I'm always take interest in this the importance of a hub. Well, let me put it this way. I've always thought Phoenix should be a strong hub for American because of the weather. You have schedules you bringing flights in. This is a hub essentially means this is a place where you connect to other flights. I I would think that an airline would wanna keep Phoenix a hub because you can pretty much keep on schedule because of the good weather. I think that's certainly a positive there. I think Los Angeles and Dallas have decent weather as well. And they're sort of historically there. So I think that's part of the problem. But I agree with you that I mean from the Phoenix area. There's gonna be a ton of traffic in American still going to be the dominant carrier there probably with fifty percent of the traffic for the foreseeable future. Probably for several years even half a decade or so. And unless we get more airlines coming into the United States to compete. It's going to be that way that same way for a while. But I agree with you that having a good place or whether especially starting off in the morning makes sense. A lot of connecting flights to Asia. For example, have to pick is a Dallas Phoenix or Los Angeles threes. Probably too many options Rick Seaney from farecomparEcom I've got about thirty seconds. Let's look at fairs for the summer. What's your early sense on the air fare wars will be like for travelers? No, I think it's going to be pretty.

But just real quick with the polar vortex over a large portion of the country. Rick are you here in much as far as travel delays in big problems at airports yet. Yeah. There's gonna be a few slow starts today. Especially for the next two or three days. It's some tougher plus especially where they get some precipitation. There's going to be some de icing problems, so expect a slow go. And even if you're in a warm part of location, southern California, those issues are going to trickle down to us. So it's gonna be worse later this afternoon. Probably not too bad this morning. Okay. I got it. So, you know, for folks that wanna go big for Valentine's Day, maybe thinking about getting away to a romantic destination. You've got some tips for us. Well, you certainly want to be shopping right now because you wanna be outside the fourteen day advance purchase window that hairlines put in and not treat you like a business customer. I was just checking out of Columbus for non stops. There's a variety of places you can go that weekend for under two hundred dollars round trip Inc. We places like DC Vegas Atlanta. Fort Myers is also in that grouping right about two sixty round trip just slightly above Los Angeles. A to fifty so you can get away almost coast to coast for under two seventy and a few of those places are under two hundred dollars. Yeah. That that strikes me, you know, Vegas always jumps out at me. Why that's like, you know on the list? But we haven't been there yet. I mean is that really I mean, you think about that? They kind of went through their Macintoshes of you know, what happens here stays here. Then they tried to make it more family friendly. It seems like it's kind of more back to the gambling mecca again. I think you're I think you're right affect I was there about three or four weeks ago at a conference. So, you know, I think it's back to its gamely make but I mean on the outskirts they have a lot of family friendly stuff and around the lakes number ID parts of north Las Vegas. I think they've sort of divided up the city, but it's back to its gambling nature. I'm pretty sure that. Yeah. And when you talk about, you know, a nonstop a lot of people like that the efficiency of just going and then getting back, you know, with the shutdown. We're coming off of that seems like TSA and all that we should be back to kind of that ninety minute. Wait getting into the into the terminal, right? Yeah. No, it it should be back to normally takes about two weeks to unwind a variety issue. So they're still be some delays. Of course, the cold weather and potential precipitation along with that's going to cause some issue. So. I was still, you know, caution people to get their just a slight bit early than they normally would. But as we get through sort of early February and mid to late it should all be caught up and as we head into spring break season. It should be completely caught up. Rick Seaney, our guest with fair compare dot com. You mentioned spring break. You talk about hey, I can still maybe get a deal for Valentine's Day. I should still be okay. On spring break time to shouldn't. Yeah. You're you're just for both of them Valentine's Day. You definitely want to buy this week. If you're going to be flying during that weekend president's day weekend as well. So it's it's fairly popular. And so for spring break, you definitely want to be shopping as well this week is it you're a little late in the game. Especially if you want warm weather destinations, essentially, you have south Florida going to be the cheapest Mexico beaches the second cheapest, and then Caribbeans going to be the most expensive. And if you're if you're thinking about heading to the Caribbean. You better buy your ticket quickly because those tickets are all around seven hundred to a thousand Florida beaches under five hundred. And Mexico beaches sort of in that six hundred dollar round trip range. Yeah, we talked about non stops for Valentine's Day, can can you get to Mexico or the Caribbean. Nonstop. Not from Columbus. But from surrounding cities, you can but just generally you're going to connect in one of the major hubs typically Dallas put potentially Chicago, maybe even through Miami. Okay. Good stuff. Always great information. Rick. We appreciate the time much. Rick Seaney, fair, compare dot com. Traffic and weather. We got you covered with updates in just a quick minute. "Now airlines you can be rest assured. No every school district in the United States and exactly what days spring break occurs on. And so they raise the price for example on Saturday and Sunday on each weekend bracketing spring break. So if you can break up your trip into a five nights to say, Tuesday Saturday, for example, you can typically save thirty to forty percent, and you need to be shopping for those right now in the March timeframe man that spring break thing, you you totally have my number, and I guess so today where are the deals in spring? When it's, you know, maybe people want to go to Hawaii where it would be like an unexpected place to go that might be a really great. Deal. Yeah. So I mean, clearly people like to go, warm, generally. But some people like to go ski ski is going to be a lot cheaper than beach, for example. So there's tons of destinations. Denver has some good places Salt Lake City is usually cheap during that time frame, especially out of Sacramento. If you're if you really want to go to warm, it sort of goes in order of Florida, south Florida, then Mexico beaches, and then the Caribbean so cheapest most expensive, and to be honest during spring break, what you're looking for in those cases to beaches is what I like to call a better bad deal because there's really no good deals. But if you do leave for example on a Monday or Tuesday and don't try to get that seven day Holiday Inn where you're leaving on a Saturday and Sunday and coming back on a Saturday and Sunday, you can still save thirty or forty percent on those beach destinations. All right. Good to thanks Rick. That's Rick Seaney with farecomparEcom..

"Through Friday, there's no because I'm thinking about availability, maybe that affects the price. But it doesn't really matter right which day of the week. You purchase a ticket. It does to some degree. So just generally the every route is different and everyone has more or less competition. And so they're line to manage everything at the route. So Amsterdam may be weight keeper, then for example, Rome, for example. So it's hard to say on a particular day. But if you're looking for a sale fare, generally what happens to way sale fares are filed is the marketers at the airline come to work on Monday. They set up their radio campaigns set up their media buys. They file the airfare is late Monday night. And then they hit the system in the morning around ten AM on Tuesday. And then the other the other airlines actually don't get to see their prices until they hit the system. So then they start matching Tuesday afternoon. So typically Tuesday to Thursday, if you're looking for a sale fare is the best time to shop. Right. So if I wanted to fly to South Carolina and get away from the cold, I'm gonna. By it on Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday sometime after Tuesday at ten AM, and I'm gonna make that purchase three months out. But not as close as thirty days before I travel. No. But I mean, I think I can get my head around that this all makes sense. And by the way. He tracks to these things on his website. Rick Seaney is on a phone line. The CEO affair compare dot com. And I'll post this is well on my Facebook page. I'm WGN king. John are those sale days Tuesday through Thursday applicable for international travel as well. The day are they till it's mostly for domestic. But just generally airfare sales are filed win the marketers are ready to file them. And then they can put out emails and a variety of stuff, and they don't tend to like to do that on the weekends because they like to be out playing soccer with their kids on the weekends. So generally, it's it happens on Monday and Tuesday. And that's when a lot of times, there's a lot of people shopping on Tuesdays. Well, historically, because they come in most people come to work on a on a on a Monday get a lot of their work done. And then they get a little bit of free time to shop on Tuesday when bosses and looking so there's also a historical marketing reason for doing it on Tuesdays. Well, okay, we have lots of texts..
