"O'Neil, I'm Rick Francis. We look at headlines two 9 year olds and an 8 year old are among the victims of that fatal shooting at a Nashville elementary school that shooting also claimed the lives of three adults, including the headmistress of the covenant Presbyterian school police shot and killed the shooter who they identified as a 28 year old transgender Nashville woman who was armed with two assault style weapons. Another sign of spring has arrived in the northwest today crews with a Washington State Department of Transportation began clearing snow from state route 20 more commonly known as the north cascades highway. Chaos in Israel were demonstrations shut down much of the country, the result of a controversial judicial reform plan that prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has now suspended jordana Miller is in Jerusalem covering the story for ABC News and spoke with northwest news radio's Bill O'Neill. Okay, jordana, what did we hear from Benjamin Netanyahu today Well, we heard Benjamin Netanyahu finally after months of intensifying protests and opposition to his sweeping plan to overhaul the judiciary, even penetrating into the military. We finally heard Benjamin Netanyahu say he's going to pause the process and sit down and try to craft a compromise with the opposition with the judiciary and then come back to these reforms in the next parliamentary session that is, it will begin in May and go through to July. Having said that his announcement was welcomed by the president, by opposition leaders, but almost nobody trusts Benjamin Netanyahu anymore. So the people on the streets of Israel, they scored a victory after weeks and weeks of protesting. But will Netanyahu in good faith sit down to talk about these reforms and make compromises or will he try to essentially push them through again in a few months? Now, of course, these protests did create a lot of tension across the Israeli involved hundreds of thousands of people, there were fires said, had to be quite a scene there. Phil has never seen anything like it. I mean, there were hundreds of thousands of people out every weekend. There were midweek, what were called days of disruption or national shutdown days. And then today, the unprecedented call by the labor union here in Israel that represents about a million workers, they went on general strike. That basically shuttered dozens of banks, businesses, hotels, the university's, and the airport, the international airport here, they grounded all outbound flights for hours and hours. I think many people were surprised at the response by the public here. To that point, what made these planned reforms so controversial? Why did we see large numbers of Israelis raising their voices against these plans? That's a great question. That a lot of people don't know the real answer to because it is a complicated reform platform. But in essence, what Nintendo was trying to push through or a series of laws that would weaken and politicize the courts from the Supreme Court all the way down. And I'll give you just one example. There was a law that would allow lawmakers with a simple majority of one vote, right? There's a 120 seats in the parliament. The government with just 61 vote majority could strike down Supreme Court law rulings. Now, why do you need a Supreme Court if such a simple majority can strike down, right? The Supreme Court. I mean, that essentially neuters the court. They also wanted to pass laws, for example, Israel has no constitution, but it has basic laws that the Supreme Court considers as quasi constitutional. Now, this government wanted to restrict the ability of the Supreme Court to even weigh in and adjudicate on basic laws. ABC's Jordan Miller with us on the northwest news line. And that's Bill O'Neill. Well, money has become more important to Americans in the last 25 years, while patriotism and other values have become less important. That's according to a Wall Street Journal poll, which says 43% of Americans say money is important compared to 31% in 1998 by contrast, the importance of patriotism dropped from 70% of Americans in 1998 to only 40% today. Memphis police are searching for a man wanted for a series of apparently random shootings across the city with at least one live streamed on Facebook, Memphis PD has identified the 19 year old suspect they say he may still be live streaming, but he's on the move so they haven't been able to pin him down. Auto insurance rates are increasing, but coverage is not bank rate dot com's Kate deventer takes a closer look with Tom hudler. Tell us about some of the numbers here. Premiums go up, coverage doesn't seem to be in lockstep with those increases. That can cause some problems. Give us your analysis into those problems, and what we can do about it. Yeah, absolutely. Well, thank you for having me. But that's exactly it. Inflation is causing a lot of the costs associated with car insurance claims to rise. So things like medical care services are up about 5% year over year, according to the consumer price index. The cost of new vehicles used vehicles, vehicle parts and equipment, all of that is rising, and what that means is that car insurance claims are more expensive. That causes insurance companies to raise their rates to make sure they have enough money in their claims reserves to pay out those claims, which means you're paying higher car insurance costs. But the other side of that is with claims getting more expensive, unless you have looked at your car insurance and increased those limits, your coverage is not really going as far as it used to, which could potentially leave you under insured if you have an accident. Kate, what about getting the right insurance? I mean, you have to have car insurance. What about finding the right coverage in today's economy? Sure. So definitely the medical care services is one of the biggest issues in 2020, the insurance information institute noted that the average bodily injury payout. So if you hit someone else, those are the injuries that you're causing to the other party. That was about $20,000. And that was 2020. So we're now two years on from that and we're in this inflationary environment. That number is very likely much higher, but if you haven't increased your coverage, you may not have enough, especially if you have state minimum coverage. That's really the group of people I think that need to be the most aware of this. Most states, their minimum coverage limits are fairly low, $25,000 per person for bodily injury is a really common one that occurs in various states. And we're now approaching that limit with that increase in

Now here's the thing Abbott is campaigning and there's a lot of bluster in what he had to say that his office then put out the details as governors often do They come out They make the big announcement and then their office sends out an email with what that order is going to be He left out the migrants will only go if they volunteer and want to go on those buses And that they have to be allowed to remain in the U.S. by the Department of Homeland Security which means technically they are not illegal then that they are in the asylum process or an immigration judge has said they can remain for now He doesn't have the authority to round up migrants ship them around as he wants That's what the feds do Eric so dio is an immigration attorney But the situation where this would have to be voluntary in order to pass constitutional muster But none of that was brought up By the way Jeff mini groups already offer free rides to willing migrants wherever they want to go And the other part being that technically they're not illegal that the U.S. allowed them to remain if they've got to show proof that they went through the DHS process And then they're allowed to be here We're talking about people again who are legally here in the United States They have every right to be here because they have been paroled by the federal government Yeah so it sounded big new tough but in the end only for migrants who agree and say that they want to go and those allowed to remain But there's a lot going on with title 42 ending You hear a lot of the conservative governors making headlines with that They're angry that it's going to end the COVID era rules of not allowing in some asylum seekers But The White House is saying look that it's a COVID health role How do you say mask rules are going away that everybody's going back to regular life But then that that would remain And next month that's going to go away So you're going to hear a lot more border talk coming up in the next couple of weeks And of course governor Abbott is campaigning as you mentioned he's up for reelection this fall not to mention the entire U.S. House of Representatives and control of the house remains in balance This all seems like a political stunt more than anything else Well his opponents are definitely saying that that they are saying this has stunt all over it that yeah he has the authority to say he's going to send state troopers down to the border to do training and put up razor wire and wear tactical gear but they're not immigration agents And they don't have federal authority in that area And while yeah he can have his state law enforcement do Some federal immigration things That's not what their role is And that's what federal agents and officers what they're doing down there So a lot of it is for show that yeah maybe it will deter people from coming in But when it comes down to the bus situation I mean it really is not what it was built And that's ABC's Alex stone talking with Jeff pojo for the full conversation subscribe to the northwest politics available at NW news radio dot com.

and our editor is Kathy O'Shea Russia is expected to be hit with more sanctions this week Today White House press secretary Jen Psaki did not go into specifics but said the sanctions are aimed at making it more difficult for Russia to fund its ongoing war against Ukraine A federal jury and Tacoma has awarded $8 million to a woman hurt in the 2017 Amtrak train derailment that spilled passenger cars onto I 5 and killed three people that brings to $46 million in damages so far for victims Big news in the golf world Tiger Woods says today he feels like he's going to play at the masters in Augusta this week Well as of right now I feel like I am going to play As of right now I'm going to play 9 more holes tomorrow ABC's Derek Dennis joining us on the northwest news line with more on what the 5 time champ needs to weigh before making a final decision What's he still considering Derek Well he's considering whether he can actually walk the course without further injuring himself or even just making it down the stretch Tiger Woods is really just a year out from his serious car crash where he shattered part of his right leg and needed screws and pins in a rod of his ankle just to walk again but today at a news conference he said he's not only going to play the masters down in Augusta George but he believes he can win The first round of the competition is Thursday We'll see if his body meets his mind 15 time major champ right And hasn't played on the PGA Tour in more than 17 months How are people saying he looks They're saying he looks good Rory McIlroy another champion said he spent some time with Tiger down to this home in Florida that says he looks good and that he's not surprised if anything he does including taking another crack at the master So that's just one person reacting to Tiger Woods come back here but of course his fans are all for Tiger to do his best and to take the masters again He's 46 years old Which is you know older of course and he's had a number of injuries over the course of his career This ankle shattering in that car crash last year though among the more serious But Tiger thanking his doctors and his therapist for getting them to this point And so it remains to be seen whether he'll actually win but he is definitely going to play He doesn't doubt his gulf abilities It's the walking he says that's the toughest part Forgive my ignorance Are they not allowed to use a cart Well you could use a card for part of it but not all of it And so that's the problem You've got to walk the course for a lot of the stretch And then you just stand there and really hit your shots So in many ways it's a game that you've got to use a mix of your physical attributes in order to win You've got to stand still but also use your body twist and use your upper body strength but also you've got to walk the course as well So it's a mix of both And what does it mean to the masters to have him participate I bet viewership would be up for sure Oh for sure I mean everybody who's involved with the masters in terms of organizing it And of course the telecast involved are all really excited to have him out back He's always been a big draw for the masters And so having them on the course again as a surprise really no one thought he'd actually make it back to the masters as a player maybe as someone on the sideline So it's an exciting time a big draw for the crowds and for the spectators And of course the organizers of the masters and the broadcasters will broadcast the competition And it's just such a huge comeback after nearly losing Dallas to Chicago all the way up into Maine It is moving east That is a problem Chicago and Dallas are big hubs And so airlines are canceling flights today left and right These people are stuck in Dallas today Well it's always frustrating when you can't get the word you're going This frustration but there's really not much you can do you know American and Southwest are being the hardest hit southwest alone has canceled 1100 flights today only at Southwest that is supposed to video live in the world DFW and Dallas have the most canceled flights for the airport in the world So the storm is blame what does this mean to ticket holders Well the airlines don't have to do a whole lot for you If they completely cancel your flight they've got to give you your money back And you can say I don't saying I want a certificate put me up at the Hilton tonight They don't have to do that They have to do that if it's their equipment that fails or something else staffing wise But when it comes to whether they don't need to do any of that so they can say sorry Lisa nothing we're going to do you can just wait and go in the morning and that's all they have to do Looking like this might continue voting rights legislation MLK's granddaughter Yolanda Renee king said her grandfather's passion for equality has been passed down to her She encouraged voters to write to their senators and talk to friends and family about why protecting voting rights is so important And independent investigation by outside agencies will attempt answer questions about the fatal shooting of a person during a traffic stop by a pierce county sheriff's deputy last night near pu all of two others in the vehicle including the driver were not injured nor was the deputy who is now an administrative leave and coming up in less than 15 minutes you will hear from the couple in Bellevue whose house was destroyed after it slid off the side of a hill who have the latest coming up The voting rights porch getting a little more momentum at least today with a holiday celebrating doctor king and win is covering this for ABC News and went more in depth with Bill O'Neil And members of dozens of organizations gathered in D.C. today right Right exactly Bill Here in Washington D.C. for voting rights advocates is MLK junior day of action What that means is hundreds of people just earlier today were crossing the Frederick Douglass memorial bridge and over a hundred national and grassroots organizations gathered right here in the nation's capital And that included advocates such as doctor king's family including his eldest son I'm not always sad the holiday should be a day on not a day off Today we're not here to celebrate We're here to be on They were calling on Congress to advance voting rights legislation And for the eldest son he was saying in his speech today that democracy stands on the brink of serious troubles And so bill they are saying at this point that the Republican controlled states are stripping away the very laws their father fought to attain and all of this is happening on the heels of what we are expecting for tomorrow Senate Democrats are set to debate voting rights legislation And so in a 50 50 split Senate we are expecting that the vice president Kamala Harris will be the tiebreaker in order to actually bring the legislation up for debate And just debate I will mention because usually it takes 60 votes to get this debate even to start And in this case they have this kind of legislative loophole They don't need those other ten votes from Republicans So it's a small victory for Democrats but ultimately though they still need those Republicans to end debate and actually vote on the bill which is not going to happen So at that point I will mention we heard from some democratic aides today about what happens after that They say likely what's going to happen on Wednesday is that the majority leader Chuck Schumer could challenge that 60 vote threshold otherwise known as the filibuster that they need to get an advancement of the legislation and in order to challenge it they just need a simple majority Another 50 votes is 51 votes in this case And that could come as early as Wednesday But again we heard those dates over and over the democratic senators Joe Manchin and kyrsten sinema They are opposed to changing Senate rules So it's likely all of this will fail in the end Yeah we've heard the president actually used something of along the lines of unfinished business and describing the voting rights legislation moving forward here Will we stand against voter suppression Yes or no Will we stand against election subversion Yes or no But it doesn't seem like he has a lot of sway over those two senators does he Right And he's tried multiple times to meet with them who's even met with them recently in the past few days at The White House and it doesn't seem like they're going to change their mind But that rhetoric is even pushed into today we heard from not only the president in recorded remarks but also the vice president Kamala Harris she demanded action on voting rights in honor of doctor Martin Luther King Jr. She pledged that the administration would keep up that fight calling on the Senate to follow through with what she called the responsibility to pass this legislation and she made it clear that she still making calls and she still having these meetings on this issue but it certainly seems that even though the administration is still pushing ahead it's all just like the lack of support that they need not only official wants to block a subpoena for his phone records To come a police officers involved in the death of Manny Ellis last year had been exonerated from any policy violations the police chief and Tacoma says the decision follows a thorough review by the county sheriff's department state patrol and attorney general's office Three other officers though still face felony charges for the death of Ellis a black man who said he couldn't breathe as he was being detained New punishment for those airline passengers who behave badly on board airplanes ABC's faith and boob joining us on the como news line with the FAA's message just in time for holiday travel faith It really is you know and of course the reason behind this push to try to add more penalties to unruly passengers is because of the skyrocketing of a number of incidents that we've been seeing We're talking abuse threats and violence against airline workers especially flight attendants Just recently there was a survey of 5000 flight attendants 85% of them said that they had actually dealt personally with an unruly passenger since January of this year And a good number of them actually were physically assaulted And so the FAA is tired of this the numbers have been going up since 1995 The highest number of unruly passenger investigations that they had was 310 And that was the highest in 2004 in 2020 was a 183 investigations but fast forward to this year They've had more than a thousand investigations of unruly passengers So it's really really a problem It's dangerous for the workers unpleasant for other travelers So the FAA is now partnering with the TSA to really make these penalties tougher And so if you're one of those who gets fined by the FAA for being unruly at the airport or an airline on your flight you will lose your TSA PreCheck benefit They have a zero tolerance policy This new partnership is supposed to make it safer for everyone And of course TSA PreCheck is this benefit that allows you to expedite your security screening when you're at the airport go through the line faster and the federal government is making sure people know that this is a privilege not a right And so if you become one of those unruly passengers you will have to wait in line like the rest of everyone else Interesting I didn't realize that they hadn't teamed up before So this is a new partnership Yeah it is It is a new partnership I think they were trying to figure out okay how much more can we do Of course they've had these fines for a while now but they wanted to add more penalties to this And so they figured oh well if TSA PreCheck is reserved for people who are considered low risk travelers if you're unruly passenger you're not necessarily a low risk traveler You're a high risk traveler And so there are partnering to do this to make sure that these people don't have the advantage of skipping the line and then causing trouble once they're in the air What's considered unruly faith Where is the line Of course each flight attendant or each airport worker will have to share their own personal stories and then the FAA will figure out after it investigates to figure out okay does this qualify The issue is that have happened recently A lot of them have been passengers who have been refusing to wear their masks It's a federal violation The federal government requires that you wear a mask when you're at the airport and when you're on your flight And so if you refuse to wear your mask you flight attendant is asking you to wear your mask and you're fighting them That is considered unruly behavior You've had people who have been threatening these flight attendants They've threatened violence They've actually physically hit them You've had a situation You've actually had several situations recently where flight attendants have had to go to the hospital because they got into fights with unruly passengers It's a wide range of things The FDA investigates a lot of them and then they determine okay this qualifies as unruly behavior This is your criminal charges We're here are your civil penalties And those can be tens of thousands of dollars up to $37,000 per incident ABC's Some of our carpenters think this is a fantastic contract, and some of them struggle with it. "Tub Cove, bathroom and shower. Remodel. We thank you for joining us. Bill O Neill is at the editor's desk with ELISA Jaffe. I'm Rick Francis. Governor Greg Abbott says Texas is going to build its own border wall. Abbott said law enforcement will target undocumented migrants who are engaged in trespassing, human smuggling and criminal mischief. The Republican says illegal immigrants need to be put in jail for breaking the law while criticizing the federal government for lax security. Seattle's Office of Police Accountability says an officer followed proper procedures last year when he shot at the suspect who threw a flaming piece of lumber inside the officer's cop car. The burning wood injured. The officer who fired seven shots in response did not injured the suspect. The nation's unemployment lines keep getting shorter. The Labor Department reports 376,000 Americans filed first time claims for jobless benefits last week 9000 fewer than the previous week. Bankrate dot com's senior economic analyst, Mark Hamrick spoke with Cuomo's Tom Hudler, just like a golf score. Good to see that number going down and I'll see one before the other. It won't be Michael score, but But no, you can waive the sixth straight weekly decline on the national number. It's a fresh pandemic. Whoa there on the number of new jobless claims. You're in the state of Washington even more pronounced decline of 1200 to 9000 new claims, So these numbers are moving in the right direction for a job market that's continuing to heal. All right. What are some of the other takeaways from the report, for instance, the continuing claims and a lot of people who are still getting some sort of jobless benefit. That's right. So continuing claims is the total number of benefits that are paid to the traditional state programs. Think of the situation before the pandemic with the federal government added a couple of programs so that number is 3.5 million. Compare that to a year ago. 19 million, so a big decline there, but still, we have 15.3 million people on some form of unemployment benefit. Remember, those federal programs are basically set to go away around Labor Day, and many states are beginning to take them away anyway, or at least attaching a work search requirements. So I think these big numbers are probably going to receive. Of course, more people are going back to work as well. More people are going back to work, and more people are looking for people to work for them. There are still seems to be a kind of a logjam of availability, in some cases, and in some particular industries, absolutely leisure and hospitality bars and restaurants, retailing also manufacturing, It tends to be the lower paid or entry level jobs that are the hardest to fill these days. This is, I would say part of the price of the reopening in the economy after the unprecedented shutdown the last year.
