"Something I noticed going through. This is the bulk of his episode. I'd say good eighty percent of the scenes Roxana and the doctor and it was very interesting because neither of those are main cast members rights so as to guests taking up the bulk of the screen time in this episode and that made me think and it was told through their viewpoint when you when you pointed out earlier though that when they're talking the science minister we had never one number two number three like they didn't really have a lot of screen time otherwise. I think they are trying to squeeze in what they could because this episode was not focused on the main cast. So it's like okay. Here's a chance we have on the bridge to to put these people on screen again. Remind you that this is Star Trek that you know we haven't changed cast But yeah that was but interesting. Do you remember the role that I told you that? Rick Berman has guess that it's the main crew cannot be this overly emotional group. It's you've got to allow the aliens to do that. Charm and this particular episode gets into that. So yeah it's very weird especially considering. We came off this episode if you a few weeks ago about of written from another viewpoint and never ever do that again and they will eventually go on to do that and this is actually an example where they really right it outside of the viewpoint of the main cast although they are still on the enterprise and it is still federation at least from similar but yeah. I would argue. This episode is like from his point of view. Yeah I would agree. I would hardly agree. So yeah it. It certainly is a little outside the norm of most star Trek episode. So Matt's I'll put it to you. We'll wrap this up. Did you like this episode? I'm sure you understand why we put it into the group. Is this an episode? You WanNa Watch again. Where where are you with this episode? Not on top of my list to watch again. I probably would've on TV because of how it turned out your first half of this episode. "I think that's really important for people to understand. Tell tell about your encounter with Ben vereen and. What you said is, is the power of having dreams. When I decided to become an actor, I sort of locked in on been Verein as as the standard, the platinum standard. I mean, I'm seventeen years old sixteen seventeen years old. And I wait two hours for bending the come to the backstage door so I can get his autograph. He finally comes out. He finally, he finally comes out. I take a polaroid picture. I have him sign my program. I shake his Mr. green. My name is lavar Burton. I'm an actor and I hope to work with you one day that was the summer of nineteen seventy two the the summer of nineteen seventy six. I was working with Ben vereen and roots. Pretty, it's pretty crazy. Do you set intention like that in your life? Yes. What is your goal setting process look like? A lot of. Involves a lot of tools that I've picked up over the years meditation, visit, visualization used to. I used to. Said intentions by writing them down, and then I would put them under my sleeve or tape them above my my head where I slept. So that so that the vision, the dream occupied, both my waking and sleeping activities, and I would write those daily intentions and and just a continuous, keeping in touch with what the goal, whatever that was was working, working, working inside and out. That's I think what it takes. One thing I really hope people see in your story is the degree of intention that you have in the choices that you make, and you need only look at your career to see how intentional you've been with the even the three things you're most known for are just so positive. And so optimistic very much empowering. And then I think the thing that really tells that story is what you had to do to become a director, and I think people think, oh, well, he was an act on the show. So of course, they let them direct walk people through what you had to do on your days off to get a shot to direct. There was a process involved, Rick Berman, the executive producer of Star Trek. The next generation was very happy to to help facilitate one of the actors on the show who wanted to cross that line and step over and become a director. And what we call we called Star Trek university was established when Jonathan Frakes made that decision to to to step over and try directing. It was established that you would get a complete and comprehensive education in all aspects of of storytelling on film you had to come in on your days off, you had to attend production meetings. You had to attend spotting sessions scoring sessions. You had to spend time with every editor in the rotation. It was as I say it was it was immersion in the the process and becoming fluent in other languages that that make up visual storytelling. And when you completed that process, you've got a shot, whether you got a second shot after that really depended on how you performed your first time out, but you did not get a shot until you demonstrated a commitment commensurate enough to have earned the opportunity. I love that and I love how much energy and effort you put in on your spare time -solutely and you've said about directing, and I love this that directing is much about leadership's as it is about storytelling. So what, what does great leadership look like? Well, I don't know, but I have learned over time that I like to lead by example, and that. That my leadership style is all about communication. I believe that the quality of our efforts is determined by the quality of our communication when I'm directing you will. I'm very, very vocal. An alpha personality..

"Well something you definitely took away from your time on nextgen was your love of directing how did that start i i sort it to shadow the directors early early on because it became clear to me that i was like the you know the fifth or sixth best actor of this show very fortunate to be there and i thought the directors i mean it's the best job in the world so i shadowed alive than i spent a lot of time in the editing room three hundred hours and the editing room and rick berman who was the producer of all things star trek let me go to all the pre production and a casting into postproduction into scoring and sound spotting an eighty are an and when i wasn't working i spent my time learning and finally after two and a half seasons of this rick relented and gave me an episode and who was a blessing to have been at paramount university for so long because by the time i was given an episode to direct i was prepared but does still doesn't mean is gonna work because on television as you probably know having just as much as you have some episodes have better than others oh yeah i happened to avid data episode and brent spiders a genius and it happened to be the specs show that ray should very of wrote who became one of our stalwart writer so he was his first episode it was a data episode and i was overprepared it was the one in which he um data built his daughter lallah was called offspring season 3 how did being an actor change the way you were a director and are you a different kind of director than most because of that experience i think it's been a real advantage to speak actor and to understand how vulnerable and frightened and self involved tend conscious unconscious a mean and i don't think there's any disadvantage to having been an actor who turns r a lot of act a lot of good directors were actors first.

"He found out that he had been cast as superman it's insane near link forrest gump you've been at these key moments throughout her whole career okay so speaking of having been present through a long history can you talk to me about getting hired to play wet wild bill of rights care on on startec next generation and what it was like to step on tobacco that i can with great pleasure i auditioned seven times over six weeks for this part really and from the first meeting with a casting director with duty lowery through meeting um rick berman had cetera led roddenberry and cory allan the director and then because it was owned by paramount but was sold separately to two hundred and thirty seven i think separate television stations that were all kinds of executives who needed convinced that that all of us were the people to play these parts and obviously in any show in and the unseen crew that's also a key part of the of the family at did you guys participate with the writers in sculpting these characters or did you have more input into that as the years went on very interesting and a telling question having done to style for a long time i realize how little input we did have into the characters back then i mean with the exception of the late great morris hurley who was an executive producer for probably a season we took me to lunch and we talked about what i liked and i liked jazz and he said what do you play us at a play the trombone.

"Marion i my wife scouted gift hobby stores for anything that would eliminate beeper flash with a flip of its attach switch one of our best discoveries was a store that sold circular in square holograms that fit perfectly into my eyes pieces we then hit another television milestone it was the first time a mini laser was used for a practical effect captive a card was kidnapped and bore defied the laser was mounted to the right side of his head so would follow with its red stream of light any of his movements what we didn't know was what would happen if he looked directly into the camera lens while filming the moment of truth arrived without any testing patrick as bird cuba's stare directly into the center the camera lens with his laser the next day after the studio had watched are previously dazed dailies as the as are known i received an excited called from producer rick berman i don't think i ever heard him more excited nouri teen years together he told me the effect was fantastic on screen it made the picture look like the lens of the camera ed shattered into a million pieces this was not a costly affect it was accomplished with a tiny laser the cost around two hundred dollars just when i thought the boards were as good as they could every get paramount would make another nextgeneration movie titled first contact 1990 six is my favorite of all is star trek movies rick in the studio wanted the board to to be lean to be mean uh to be a fighting machine more terrifying than ever and they will be led by a queen the ruler of the hive first contact would change the look of the board forever in the beginning it took five hours each to apply the makeup get them into costume and hook up all the electron ix the suits had all been redesigned by robert blackmon and the helmet's had been eliminated in favour of totally baldheads decorated with random chunks of large and small circuitry the baldheads would appear as if all the attest assessories into tubing were embedded into their skulls.

"Since christopher nolan is basically the only kind of conservative slash reactionary filmmaker out there it drives critics a little bit nuts and i'm always curious to see how long him politically conserve no no no no not only conservative as young temperamentally rightly ira gavo i it's i don't know i it's tremendous i liked it a great deal in the theor the first time i have liked it a little bit more with each passing hour i am looking forward to sing it again this week it's it's a truly great movie and they're of of the things that make it great up the one which stands out to me most is the how he has taken his it is a very interesting trick he's taken his epic story and told it in the smallest possible way and so we everything is on a smallscale almost all the conflicts involve just a handful of men you know yet like nine guys inside the the trawler who being shot up by the germans you have when the plane's fight it's always like two planes versus two other planes at end visited that a handful of guys on georgia's boat as they are making the way across the channel end i wish all filmmakers could understand that the others that fiend famous redletter media at review of phantom menace where they catch a who who's a producers rick berman as yet present nokia isn't he the star trek i yes he is so some lucas michael hands yes who sang at refrain so densely packed in in this one of these you said everything squat phobic except for the aerial scenes in when you get up in the air there's nothing but white space and the aerial combat scenes have you contrast that with what you see in.
