"We welcome you back in certainly some very poignant memories of coach bobby bowden during the break and speaking of that ben brown join just like all of us have followed coach brown's career but a number of years ago. He wrote a book entitled. Saint bobby And the barbarians Ben thank you very much Remember when the book came out and certainly I'm sure on this this day and yesterday is we've all reflected back on on coach bowden I'm sure i'm sure you were doing a lot of reminiscent as well. Good afternoon. good afternoon. Thanks for having me on and let's go back a little bit and as you were working on this book I i know in the time you were in the newspaper business and can you kind of take us through. What led you to to that project. Well the i was. It was a series of lucky events. I was i was working with. I was working a sports writer with usa. Today at the time. And i've been covering Several you know. I was most mostly a feature writer and i happened on Richard woods who then was the was the attorney for both bobby bowden and bo jackson. And i've been following bo jackson around running a lot about him. I asked richard if we thought there was a book. And though jackson and he said well he's already got a contract for a book. But how about bobby bowden. That's what i'd love to be bad. I covered him somewhat but not extensively he didn't know me but i was a florida native. I followed his career when he joined florida. State i was excited about talking to him so i pitched. We pitched him. Richard and i pitched him on the idea. He loved the I love the idea of doing some kind of book he was. He wanted to run it by his assistant coaches and so he had to go down and make a presentation to to the assistant coaches to assure them that. that i would that i would Trio to thoroughly. Bobby's generosity In the deal was that he gave me Full journalistic control. I told him i would. He could review anything. That was in the book We would split revenues. Whatever evidence came from the book and then advance But that i needed to do to do the job. I thought i do I needed to have total control over. Whatever went into the book He can argue with me about anything about in there. But i would have the final control that that's an incredible. I think i was naive. Time to that kind of idea to a football coach who are enormously secretive and paranoid and It's just a. It's just another demonstration of his generosity and openness by the way side. I was very close friends with richard woods. At the time. And i he. He was somebody who understood the side. You are on in journalism because of his past. And i'm really glad To to hear his name again because he played such an important role during that time. Let me ask you about what you learned Throughout this process we are now all reflecting on coach bowden. You saw it firsthand. Well i think. I i didn't know quite what to expect going in. I came in just like any other reporter and just hung out every and everything that would give me access to and that included every meeting Every meeting he had with the coaches every every practice. Every game i was on the sidelines. Those in the locker room or he just gave me total total access. And what struck me is how little i knew i really knew about football. And especially about the incredibly administr administrative managerial responsibility of the head. Football coach has over one hundred people that answer to him and did is responsible for them their livelihood their extended family. And what a complicated kind of about that is and so. I came away thinking. Despite all the accolades that bobby bowden and already received would receive in the future. I came away thinking that he was he was vastly underappreciated to the totality of the stuff that he did it just increased my admiration for him enormously just watching him. There's so many somebody comments about what type of a coach was. What type of a man he was you you. You've got a good long look. This wasn't just a fly over or dry by. Does it match what you're hearing today in the obituaries and tributes. I think a lot of people had come to know him. Well enough to catch a lot of that. But i think what's what's what's With really hard to for fans and for sports writers to appreciate Is how good he was multiple multiple tasks. I mean he. Was that the consummate football coach and that he was. He always favored praise about explaining his motivation. Was he was just frayed to lose. He just couldn't he didn't want to think about losing dissociated everything he could To to control those things that were that were potentially under control for coach and that is you know the selection of talent And the game planning the preparation the practices but he kept reminding me. Because you know there's three factors that determine whether you're gonna win or not that's the talent you have in the preparation you put in and look and he said you know the the first two things are under your control and you wanna maximize those two things. So you don't ever have to depend on the third thing And i think that the his family to be The the kind of mentally tough coach that's required to manage not only a team like that but an entire program and at the same time to to perform for the media for fans in that These he was always a friendly gracious compassionate guy but he he knew that that was a poured. Elevate that publicly. So they had that public persona the folksy Back home Self deprecating guy That that was truly him but but amplified by what he do was responsibility to fans into media..

You know him. You love him. You can't send your loved ones to school without him. Bob Bradley is with us. How you doing, Bob? Great. Good morning. How are you doing? And I'll take some of that money if you're gonna share it now. Yeah, well, I would. You are top of my list by Brad going alphabetical order. So, yeah, you get what's coming to you? Bob is with the Mechanical Contractors Association of Georgia. And right up front. Bob Bradley, I want you to explain to the Atlanta listeners 48 million people. What is the Mechanical Contractors Association to Georgia? And what do you do with them? Okay. What kinds of contractors Association of Georgia We have about 50 contractors in the association that employed roughly 2500 people in the piping industry, which is HDFC service work. Plumbing and get welding, search and pipe fitting. So one of those three crafts so I'm the director of Workforce, development of 35 years in education and retired in education, so I moved over with the Mechanical Contractors Association. Probably about October a year ago, so I'm really enjoying it. And I couldn't get to continue to do what I've done for 35 years, which is help young people try to find success. After high school. You were in education for 35 years. That's that's pretty bad. What year seventh grade eighth grade. Where did you spend most of your time? I mean, I was only in school, See 12 years and then four years ago at 16. You took twice as long I kid I kid because I love Bob. We share the same thought process about kids coming out of high school automatically going to college or whatever. When that may not be for everybody, right? Well, you know, we've all been taught that that's what you gotta do for a successful career is you got to go to college, and I guess I was guilty of it. Uh, the reason I'm doing what I'm doing and trying to help other people. I've got two daughters, and they're both leading to college degree from the career. They I pursued, But then I've got a third child is the sun that that went five years to college, and, uh, you know, he's not in the in the career he needed. But when he's playing $700 a month, and he'll do that for 10 years to place off that college loan that he really didn't need, you know the average person don't you know? After college they allow about $30,000 course. I don't know where they come up with that to you because I have a whole lot more than that. But You know, college is not for everybody. What I encourage her by news, Michael plan and look at all the different options and when I go out, talk to young people, even about my industry, But I talked all of them and say, Hey, talk when your parents discuss it and the bump of plan, so if you're not wasting money or time Uh, in a place you don't need to. So you represent some trade school. It'll come trade because I don't know if that's how you you referred to or not. But that's how I referred to Ms Trade schools, places where people can go learn a trade without having to take astrology or English, 101 or all those other classes. You can actually go. And learn a skill so that in how long's it take to run through? Of course, generally, right, Well, it's a five year apprenticeship program. And what happens is our contractors hired these people, these young folks, and they have an opportunity to go to the friendship program. And you don't know where that they're instant welding and pipe fitting there in the welding and pipe fitting crafted during interest in HK Service, they're talking about H D C service. And the same with industrial and commercial plumbing. Let me stop you, right? Let me stop you right there Because you said they hire these these kids and then they send them to class. Is that the way it works like it hired and then you send me or do I go to class first, and then I get hired. No, you'll get hired and then you'll spend you know it's a full time job. So in five years during their friendship that young person's made about $180,000 on the job, and then he's going to night school to nights a week, usually for five for five years, and he turns out as a journeyman plumber pipe put on HBC service Tech. On And at that point the total package is making is around $100,000. When you think of a teacher going and getting her master's and starting out at about $35,000, and here, these young people are going out there. They made $180,000 in five years, and now they're making right out of 100,000 with the total package. That's a pretty good gig. Speaking with Bob Bradley's with the Mechanical Contractors Association of Georgia now they don't know any money when they come out either do that. I mean they're paid in the training is part of their package, right? Right. The contractors absorb all the costs for as long as they're getting their hours in on the work and doing what they're supposed to do in the classroom. The contractors cover the entire cost gesture could call me sir. Now before I before I get into just how somebody gets into this program. We've always talked about his kids coming out of high school kids coming out of high school kids coming in high school. What if I'm 25 or 30 years old and I'm looking for work and I get into this program. Well, that's the great thing is a lot of people that that even try their hand at college to go the military or what, not, you know, the average age down at the apprenticeship school, The mechanic Entrees Institute is right at 28 years old, So I encourage anybody that's looking wants to work. Hard wants to work with their hands, Uh, took to look into it. It's a great opportunity. What is there an age limit? Can I get in? It was 60 years, you know? Well, I'm gonna be speaking. I'm gonna be interviewing somebody at 60 years old at 10 o'clock this morning, so There is no age limit. If I want to work and want the opportunity it's gonna be there for him. That's sweet now. Okay, let's go back to I'm in high school say, you know, we're in second semester. Theoretically, whatever whatever kids are doing for school these days, I know where I see him. There there, cleaning out golf carts and jumping on trampolines. But let's just say is there someone in my school? My high school that can lead me to that is our counselor. Somebody that you work with in high schools and All they have to do is go there. Counselors say. Hey, I heard this guy on the radio Saturday. He said I could get into a tech school. How do I do that? How? How did they get in touch with you? Um, well, Kobe is really hard because I trust you get out into the schools as much as I can. But right now, with the covert issue, I'm having a hard time We've got a great weapon are coming up on February 16th at 6 30. For the 1st 1000 people turned up and it's endorsed by Superintendent Richard Woods, and it's gonna be a great great Webinar. It's not just about the mechanical contractors. It's about all the options and choices for a high school student after after they graduate That information will be filtering out through the God through the school counselors next week, and I encouraged people if they don't get the message through their school to contact me, and I'll get them that information. It is limited the 1st 1000. The great thing is after It's only an hour long. We've got leaders from education leaders from industry, the military will be there, They will be able to have every question they have about their future. Answer at that weapon are after the webinar. There's gonna be breakout sessions. So if you're resting and joining the Navy, they'll be somebody from the Navy there. If you rest in talking to me and ask me specific questions or the electrical association or the Sheet Metal Association or technical schools will be represented. It's gonna be a great function and we're really, really excited about it. You said that information's coming out this weekend in my listeners get a sneak preview of where they need to go to see this or you're gonna hold that.
