"Because I believe all you can be acolytes, right? I could leave you can take the story out like a pebble in in a lake you can take the story out because otherwise it's just like Richard Pryor city went down to court Justice. And that's what he found just us. Right. That's that's that's a great line. And it really is a class. Y'all normally get this kind of good material. But I'm just telling you, I'm just I'm I'm telling you that we have to question when they talk about what we're doing. And how we doing it? And why it's different now than it was then or why is different from the city of Atlanta, you telling me, the hunger and fifty nine counties in Georgia. And all of them are giving their over records right away. Whereas the attorney general only investigating the city of Atlanta and signing eight agents, do you know why? Because as long as they have been in office, the always run against Atlanta. Right. Chris Carr, who was the attorney general. I can promise you remember that name, right? Chris Carr who was chief of staff for Nathan deal. Right. And then when the attorney general here's is what's interesting, right. I'm just as quick store, and Rick Chartres was probably got some of the question. So. Governor deal appoint the attorney general who was Sam Olin's to be the president of Kennesaw university. Right. And then he takes his chief of staff and makes his chief of staff as the attorney general, right? So. And now the guy who was chief of staff or Nathan deal is saying the most important thing for the state of Georgia is the records in the city of Atlanta. Right. You made out of your remember mid scandal lack us that name ring a bell for you miss scandal are an absolute freedom. Right. Who was running for Lieutenant governor. And you know, his the commercials this commercials. Here's with commercials. I immersive was I'll kick Atlanta's ass, right? When I'm elected. That was his commercial television. Okay. Mike bowers. I can go down the line of people who have just they ran against Atlanta. They run again. Yeah. Look, you're they talk about dog whistles, gene. Look at Brian Kemp. Who when I saw those commercials where he had a shotgun and the truck and the explosives, right? I was wondering like, where's the ATF? Why why don't they normally we usually an explosion out in somebody's jar ATF is out there. Right. You got a shotgun. He's holding. He's got a truck ways, your take all the aliens or the legal people. Download the round ball personal roundabout personal, right? And he's got an explosion on his yard. And now the commercials. He's like mister Rogers right is. So my point simply is they all run against Atlanta. It's just a a dog whistle because it's really just a way of saying I'm going to subjugate black, folks. I'm gonna make certain the black folks stay in their place. And this is how it's worked forever. Look for all you who go down to the Richard Russell building. Right. I'm gonna give you another quick history. At richard. Russell was one of the most racist senators politicians, he voted thirty eight times against anti lynching bills. Right. He voted thirty eight times against anti lynching Bill. He led the fight against all the civil rights legislation. He said they will never be blacks and whites going to schools together, I can go down to visit and this and they named the Richard Russell building here. Right. And they also named the Richard Russell building in Washington. So. It's almost incomprehensible which you see because they write their history. Right. I'm coming back to the same story. They write the history of Richard Russell, the he. Oh, he he was a master strategist, right? And. Russell heard about it. We heard coming adding. Microphone off in a couple of minutes. Things. Really interesting. You bring that up because narratives are really different based on status and something we talk about in this last race based on race based on race and race has a lot to do a status. We talk about social impact theory in my classroom and social impact theory, basically says you can influence a group based on a few factors number one proximity. So if I'm closer to you in proximity. I have a better chance at influencing you if I'm close to you in thought, meaning we have the same ideology, I can possibly influence you. Also status. Meaning if I am of the same race or come from the same socioeconomic background I can influence you then there's another part of social impact theory that says group dynamics, which means if I walked into a room, and you guys walked into a room, and I said, it's raining outside. And everybody says no, it's not raining. We just came from outside. But if this side of the room said, yeah is actually raining, y'all. This out of the room was start believing that possibly it is raining. Proximity status and impact, and what has happened in your narrative is that the story that has been written or the stories that have been written. I researched all of it. It is so surgically done that. If you're not a trained writer or train or raider or trained distributor of information. Like, I am you will miss the fact that you actually beat the federal government, right? You miss that in the article. And then when people miss that they talk to other people group dynamics, and they talked to people who are close to them proximity. And that is what happened to you? Well, it's what happened to me. But I also get the free meet at Publix devs us. Right. So that's a good trade off. I pay. Actually, I don't wanna make certain. Public. People would be called up later. Thank you so much love from people who understand the the roads were paved in southwest, Atlanta or you build new recreation centers or you make certain African American entrepreneurs get a fair shake. As an example that they wrote they had a I guess in the newspaper. I have I stopped subscribing a long time ago. I was terrible newspaper. I'm just absolutely terrible. Given us real go negative day. Man. I gotta tell you that. Yeah. My wife is giving me like cut Sam. Newspaper is an abomination absolutely horrible. You can read it you look here. You can read it like by twelve seconds in the best thing to do is go in store, you can read it while you're waiting for them to cut your meat. But they had they have a two editorials. I guess one was near bottoms talking about why the city ought to be the goats project, and then they had this absolutely undistinguished former city councilman who was there who wrote an article started a this article this yesterday Sunday he wrote a star. This article by saying that in nineteen Ninety-six mayor Campbell brought forward a proposal for vendors at the Olympics. And we only had three or four days to consider it. And that really casts an explosion dispersions on the. The whole Olympics. Absolutely untrue from start to finish. Now. Do you think if someone wrote something like that about a white mayor that they would not go through and make certain that at least the lines were accurate? Of course, not. But because he's disparaging me that's just goes with their narrative. So I I mean, it's just so you have to overcome that all the time you have to you have to work hard to make certain that people understand that's untrue. And and I just believe I just believe that, you know, as Dr king's the moral arc of the universe is law. But it's been store. It's true. I surly I'm going to hold him to that. Right. Because I know what the truth is. And I know what our administration did. I know how successful we were. And what we did. And understand. We certainly make mistakes as every administration has made mistakes, and we had some bad people working for us. Right. And and that's. Unfortunate as well. Eight thousand city workers right eight thousand so if you've got eight thousand and ten or dad that normally you would say that's a that's a pretty good percentage. Right. But in our case, right? They say oh my God. The whole thing was just corrupt. Everything was bad from start to finish winning. In fact, it was just the opposite. And and but they are so invested in the story right there. So invested in making certain that they try to destroy me and destroy my reputation. And and I always know and know that the people who are like in this room with people in Atlanta, the people really know and appreciate the things that we did because I see them, and they talked to me all the time about you know, you help my grandmother or you sent my kids to college or you did something positive for our neighborhood. And that's what sustains me, and that's what strengthens me this is firefighter.

"On, Houston's morning news so there is a move afoot evidently Chuck Schumer is the one who started this to rename the. Senate, office building, the Russell office building after John McCain Google, in fact renamed themselves yesterday if you were to Google. The Senate office building come up is the McCain building so is Google trying to put pressure on the Senate to? Do it in by the way? Who, was Richard, Russell Richard Russell. Was the Georgia Senator yes The segregation, is a segregationist so there's that's one of the reasons. Why Chuck Schumer's evidently decided by the playbook exactly right so even though he was a Democrat Richard Russell was the? Democrat yes there are plenty of? Enriched Get to lay it on the, Republicans they were also the, ones. By the way who opposed The emancipation proclamation Democrats were during the civil war he was a Republican ABRAHAM. LINCOLN, it was largely Democrats, who oppose the civil rights, legislation of LBJ very nineteen sixty three now all of that aside evidently we are told anyway the Donald Trump is, on a huge fan of, doing that course east out wasn't a huge fan, of John McCain but by in. Some Republicans more Mitch McConnell who's digging in his heels on he doesn't want to rename it. So let's get. Another political opinion on this one, is to whether or not should be renamed here's Mike Huckabee? I think the big question is are they? Doing this to get rid of Richard Russell's, name are they doing it to honor John McCain if they're. Doing it to honor John McCain that is a wonderful thing to do is an American hero. This man, served his country his entire life in ways that were beyond the call of duty I mean he is. Truly somebody who understood what, sacrifice and service was all about in any, way to honor him I got no. Problem with but I think people ought to, be honest About it and if, Chuck Schumer who I really doubt is all that concerned about? Honoring John McCain as much as he is? Creating some type of racial tension over Richard, Russell's name despite the fact that Russell was a democrat I. Don't know if Schumer remembers that are not as where most of the segregationist that pushed against. The civil, rights legislation but this is really one of those issues that if it's done to give John McCain a. Place of honor then I, applaud and would say I'm all for it Okay well you got the motivation is what, we're all questioning in this, it is six fifty one time for traffic.

"Named for Richard Russell who is a Senator from the thirties to the seventies and he features. Prominently in the Lyndon Johnson books that I'm such a big fan of the Robert Carroll. Books you know who's a fan of those books maybe the biggest fan in America Conan O'Brien really has been trying, to get Robert Carolina's show for years funny article about, it the other day. He's been stalking this author Who's written the think he's gonna put on. His, fifth, or sixth really long. Book about the life and times of Lyndon Johnson that's plenty takes him about ten years to write each book he's been working on it forever Bill Clinton and George will others have called it the greatest political biographies. International history, I mean it's just freaking awesome, they're so fantastic and in his. Last book that's going to be all about the Vietnam war and everything is going to be so good oh man he's been. In Vietnam Is it something particular about Johnson it makes it so. Good or is it just the way that he approaches his approach in its life and times so it's Johnson is. The central, character but it's the history of America really good. Biographies from the early nineteen hundreds. On through the civil rights couple of wars all this different stuff anyway, great books. Conan O'Brien's, been trying to get. The guy on. Forever and he and he hasn't come on he's done other shows you haven't come on Conan's been stalking him on emails. And, sending. Him letters and stuff Of funny any ho- not, sure I'll ever, read a big fat. Book, again I. Just don't know I just I don't feel it gets harder as you get older I've been. A voracious. Reader since I was a little kid and lately I look at a big book and I think Just I don't have the heart. And I'm not proud of it I'm freaked out by it. Gets harder as you get older and I think the whole Smartphone text our minds. Just aren't tough I know that's a, part to hold our focus It's troubling well it just looks insurmountable, which is, odd given the God knows. How many books I've read in my life anyway Anyway Richard Russell was one of the towering figures of the Senate. From the thirties to the seventies and really. Was the guy Lyndon Johnson who one of the Carol books master of the Senate, that's how he became, master of, the Senate that's who he learned from from how for how to work the Senate wheeled power that sort of stuff Richard Russell. And, that the Senate buildings named for, him and they're talking about changing the name of the building to the John McCain building now one thing you could definitely argue and I'm surprised this. Hasn't come up yet in the argument is that Russell was the guy who stopped any progress on civil rights legislation for decades that's the first thing I heard. When I heard it was. Named after an old time he. Sent me your couldn't. Thought I wonder where he is on, race 'cause that would come up you. Couldn't get anything past him while now Lyndon. B Johnson was against all civil rights legislation, his entire. Career, up into the point, he was president. And then changes mind completely so he was faking it the whole time Just because it played well. In the south or the reverse I'm not. Sure could have been an awakening nobody knows Ninety a guy right and all those long books. But anyway no. You ought to ask to. Ask him But it never, came up kind of book is why don't read books I'm not a tearing down stonewall Jackson statue guy but you need to have the Senate named after a guy who's primarily, known for stopping civil? Rights legislation seems a little. Odd and, the, naming of buildings who freaking cares anyway You. Gotta you gotta. Have it named for somebody that either, is remembered or ought to be remembered shouldn't you, somebody gave money that's what it's all about answer well yeah the man. The whole honor during an old timey Senator who, was in power for too long you may have been a great guy I don't know I'm not comfortable with civil rights opposition but I also don't engage in present ISM bright But how long's enough is? That a lifetime thing is that. A, forever. Thing some old timey Senator gets a building named now so already some of that I don't. Think there should be now if I. Engage them the. Rich man's graffiti I give the myeloma, matter something like that which isn't going to happen Me neither no not until they, list me is notable alum My the Wikipedia page for. Repeat the lines in a parking lot near. My apartment Actually the reason I, wouldn't give them my alma mater the university of Illinois at her banish champagne is last time I was. There with little day to check it out it was in terrible shape because the mismanagement of the state. Of Illinois because the decades long, oh man you want her somebody needs to write a giant biography of Mike Madigan. Who's been who's been, running, Illinois he's the mobbed up. Democrats thirty five years in power whatever it is speaker of the Illinois. Simply he's, been in power that long and he is a mobster, on the, scale of any anybody else Tammany hall or. "I'm Chuck Schumer I think was the first person to be like, I would like to put forward a proposal to rename the, you know, the Russell Senate building, there's three Senate buildings. So the the one specifically named after Richard Russell to change it to name. And after John McCain, which I think is probably a better idea. When you look back at who Richard Russell was, who is a sore Georgia, you know, straight up southern democrat, who you know, let me just read you. A quote from the campaign trail when he was running for office as one who was born in reared in the atmosphere of the old south was six generations of my forebears. Now, resting beneath southern soy, I'm willing to go as far and make as great a sacrifice to preserve insure white supremacy in the social, economic and political life of our state as any man who lives within her borders. So he said. Enough. Yeah, I don't have to go into anymore. I mean, that's enough. Okay. Let me just say even white supremacists don't say white supremacy ways. Data turn. They try and use the dog whistling, but filibustered the federal ban on lynching twice. Right? And called the Civil Rights Act, a short sighted and disastrous piece of legislation. And you know, he was sort of basically, really was one of the leaders. You know, led this southern charge against the civil rights movement. So he got to go. Yeah, I mean, that's old. You know, I think one of the reasons though why the building was named after him is because he was a very effective politician like he knew how the Senate worked. He knew how to game it, and he was various stewed student of politics and would read all the agendas and things and understand what the next day was gonna look like on the Senate floor and really played the game. And I think in that sense, maybe that is why they were able to overlook these other things in play. Well, he was very effective Senator. He knew how to get stuff. People believe that now he was born in eighteen ninety seven. And so people a lot of people believed what he was talking about back yet. He probably had the majority of and a lot of people say like, it makes sense. You know, Chuck Schumer is looking at the optics of, oh, changed the name of building who is someone who's a democrat and now named after a Republican, right? And probably everyone will be behind that because he was he was very well liked amongst his peers, right? So, yeah, it's like anything. When you look back at half the buildings and the statues that we have erected, it'd be like he's aren't dating well at all. While we're talking about politics on the hill, the Blue Wave that has been predicted by some, you know, five thirty eight..

"I'm Todd Bishop, and I'm Alan Boyle, aerospace, and science editor for geekwire Allen. It's great to have you here. You jumped in on this story on Friday night. We're going to be talking about it here throughout the show, and we're going to be playing audio clips from the air traffic control with the air traffic controller speaking with this employee who is fine this plane. Can you summarize for somebody who might have missed this? Exactly what happened up there in the sky. Well, the key figure is a twenty nine year old ground services agent, Richard Russell, and the job that he is employed to do is to handle the baggage and to maybe clean up the plane and and help with towing the planes back and forth, getting them ready for flight and bringing them back. But on that Friday, he put in a shift after the shift was over, went to a maintenance area where a horizon air bombarded by q. four hundred plane was in for servicing, and it was not going to be flying for passengers, but he was able to gain access to the cockpit and for people who have not seen this plane, you might fly in it. For example, on regional flight, I think I'd Ryan a lot of these horizon planes. Yeah. If you go to Vancouver or Victoria or Medford or Portland from Seattle, that's probably the kind of plane that they would have on that route. Right twin. Prop seventy six seats approximate right? So a large plane not as not a seven, forty seven by any means, not assessment either. Exactly right in between. So something that an amateur normally would not be able to fly. So take us from there. What happened next? Well, the first thing he did is that he took it pushback, tractor and turn the plane around one hundred and eighty degrees and then was able to taxi the plane out to the runway. Apparently without people really realizing what was happening until it was too late somehow was able to find out how to start off the plane and there's a series of switches and and levers that you have to move in the right order. And he was able to do that and without asking for permission, he just took the plane down the runway and flew off and had quite ride over the next hour. Seven hundred throats. Welcome. Final runway. One, six thousand man. I don't know what that is. Do. Two hours ago would Lindy. I wasn't really pleading leasing this line playing around. You seem comfortable with that. The bus now plays video games, four. So I. Down a little bit. So is there any indication at this point as of this recording that he had any kind of training? He made a reference on the air traffic control audio to playing video games, and so he kind of knew what he was doing. But other than that, is there any indication that he'd flown a plane before? Of course, the FBI is investigating all this and I'm sure that they would be able to come up with more of a background on it, but no information has been released, explaining how he was able to do it. It's not a trivial task as you mentioned to to fly an airplane like this, but he did execute some maneuvers including a barrel roll that are quite advanced for for this type of plane and seem to seem to do a lot of the tasks required for flying that plane pretty well. But others, she didn't seem to have much knowledge of how to pressurize the cabin, for example. And you know the landing was. Was unfortunate event that I, I should say that there were a couple of f. fifteen fighter jets scrambled out of Portland, once the airplane, once the airport found out what was going on, they were able to get those planes in the air. And the controllers did a great job of trying to talk this this ground services agent, Richard Russell through what needed to be done. But he, you know, I, it's really interesting when you listen to the audio that he was having having fun doing this that he was described as suicidal. But he didn't exactly sound super depressed or supercenter suicidal on the tape. He said, while holy smokes look at mount Ranier and the Olympics and where's that? Orca that has the calf. I wanna go see, see her. Okay..

Of the the voice recorder as well it was kind of ripped apart. In the crash and. And they're going to analyze as much as they can of, the the voice recorder and try to get, more pieces of it but did the hope is. That it the NTSB, lab in Washington DC that they're going to be, able to one figure out was he trying. To crash when he crashed or in these maneuvers. And tricks that he was doing which. By the way we're pretty incredible for a commercial airliner, shows you what they, can withstand that this Lombardi a. Q.. Four. Hundred was able to do the barrel, rolls and flying inverted and nosedives and then the quick pull up but was the the final maneuver was he trying to to crash right there did he go too low and hit the trees and then it was. Over they don't know they're gonna find out. They do, believe suicide Side, was his goal that this was a. Suicide mission but the other thing they want is from the voice. Recorder is he heard talking when. He's not talking? To, air, traffic? Control, and is on the radio frequency maybe he's explaining himself a little bit talking to. Himself was he angry with somebody they don't know they. Think he was clearly committing suicide but they don't know really why friends and family have said he was a chill guy really nice guy co workers say yeah you did his job. And never seemed angry about it so they're trying to figure out what led them down that path but bottom line it was not terrorism it was suicide we're talking to Alex stone ABC news out of Los Angeles and clearly, as you point that you know was he upset was a I don't know and I'm sure you've heard the, the foot or the the the audio from where he is speaking with the control tower, and they're trying to talk to, you know basically they start trying? To tell them if you know if he? Wants to try to land it or whatever and? I I'm sure you've heard. About this guy. Sounds like the last. Person who is described Donald or upset with anybody and it clearly from the barrel rolls in the loops, and everything that people were talking about on the ground saying they thought it was some sort of air show or something it looks to me like this guy. Had the chops if he wanted to try to take. Out a target just based? On that alone. Obviously he was being shadowed by the, f. fifteens what they would have just blown him out of the sky if he started, to make a. Move like that, it, looks like but I mean it doesn't look to me. Like he was disgruntled or I mean he's so relaxed for a. Guy that's about, to take his own. Life it's just. Bizarre yeah really is he does make it clear to tear traffic control in those recordings that, that he, didn't want to hurt anybody, else he said, he's just a guy with a screw loose as he put, it in the apologize to family saying that that they're going to think that this is something, I would, never do now it would have been a totally different situation he taken off and gone toward downtown Seattle and. Quite honestly, the f. fifteens probably wouldn't have been. There in time they were flying from Portland And they had quite a distance to go but he was flying for a long time but he didn't seem to mind. That air traffic control vector to amount to an open area over Puget Sound and then he was over wide open area not a lot. Of, residents in the area where he wasn't fact they the island that he crashed onto only as twenty residents. And their homes are far away on the island, so you know. He seemed like, he was doing whatever it was doing his own thing and didn't, have any intention to to go on hurt anybody there was some concern. Because he was. Heading, in the general direction of joint base Lewis mcchord that's when the fifteen joined in in case he was going down in that. Way but they were intercepting I'm from the south he was heading south had he been going north would have been a different situation and and quite honestly the f. fifteens probably wouldn't have gotten. There in time but in this case luckily. That that wasn't in his plan Alex stone. ABC news out, of Los Angeles thanks for joining us appreciate it Alex.
