Yeah because That's when the writers guild of america strike right now. Yeah animation was fine. 'cause they weren't in the writers guild. I knew a lot of animators who are grumbling about this. But the writers guild of america ahead a strike and so. Hbo had banked a lot of stuff. That helped them kind of coast through the writers strike without too much trouble. They had The miniseries john adams that helped him get through it. They had another season of the wire that helped him get through it But hbo did not get through two thousand seven without some major trouble. For example chris albrecht the head of. Hbo was arrested following a physical altercation. he was arrested because he Physically threatened his girlfriend at the time. Oh yeah that's not good. And apparently it wasn't his first offense either. Yeah and time warner called for his resignation. actually. I read the the letter. I thought you know i can handle drinking alcohol and clearly. I was wrong so he was very much admitting his fault in it So at least there's that i mean it's still a terrible terrible thing but He didn't deny it. So i guess that's something. So time warner now is saying all right. Well what are we going to do with. Hbo who's gonna lead it. There was not a specific person. They could point to and say. This is the person upon show whose shoulders. Hbo should rest though. They ended up picking three people to kind of divide up the the entire job of ruling. Let's start with someone from the galloway house. Hi my name's northern galloway in my prediction. Four which console or it watching platform. We'll get digging and maybe take over the world. I think disney plus we'll get bigger and bigger because with all of the people that like marvel and star wars. It's like amazing for them. And i also think sony might because sony playstation and with the new playstation five coming out well came out. It's been crazy like we've tried to ordering it. But it kept on going out of stock over and over and over allie. Twenty twenty one is that apple is going to make a lot of money through new apple search preser- and other tv plus because They a lot of ice on them. Billions of people. Iphones inch probably wanted them. Both successful making companies in the world looking search engines on their own could become really properly blessed very strong and can make money off. It also could be really awful because disney plus. Emily support stern shows in certain. Tv apple tv is going to cover everything. It's gonna be able to cover things from who the enemy was on one thing. It's also probably going to be a lot. She's better because apple is a very successful company. You don't need them which me okay. Your kids are smarter than you are. That's really situation coming here placing you this year. Maybe that's people. I'm doing deals with galloway's suns. Those are good predictions. He's right about disney. Plus i have to say my youngest son the anti the new anti-trust lawyer saying basically saying that they own the rails. I thought that was great. That's absolutely true. That's one of the reasons why kids like disney. Plus they watched it a lot because the star wars in the and all the stuff that's on it as the playstation. We can't get one. I i am not going to go out of my way but a lot of bots tell your son a lot of bots or try and orders a great story in the washington post. I think about how these bought buyers are doing it. There's some because they don't make any money on the first ones but they'll make more. I don't know there's some. There's some financial incentive not to have too many of them out there on the illusion scarcity whether it's paneriai talking supply Just creates an. They are available like every dad. You can take it a job in by it some if you want to do it that way or are you can wait because i think there's a reason why i thought your son's co correctly. Correct about apple about what he was saying about apple. And i think apple's probably a platform we tend to discount more than others for some reason. Do you think we do. Oh applic- i it's great to own the rails. His with anything they launch. I if if it wasn't apple if streaming network had Launched there wasn't apple at launch their contents. At that kind of money everyone would have said it was a flop but because they own the rails and they can guide everyone to watching the morning show which was murphy brown on ten times. The budget and there was some interesting stuff. Tehran scrape but they. They're really not committed to the same way but they don't. They don't need to be because they can stuff down our throats to get to watch content to to be watching content on an iphone on apple. Tv plus is three clicks on netflix. It seventeen and so they get between three and twelve percent of total revenues from streaming video platform. Again it because the tone cater. They should still do better. I get out there. But it shows that killer knows how to handle like different power people in the media industry as important our buddy Jay. The killer had this court in two thousand eleven. That basically summed up the whole thing. It was a criminal. History has shown that incumbents tend to fight trends that challenge their established ways and in the process they lose focus on what matters most customers. At and T. Needs a little bit of this guy snacks. We get a little update here. We're a little over halfway done today. Snacks Daily Pot. So if you're doing snacks challenge and seeing how far you can run in the first one episode exhausted all right time to turn around and run back and you gotta go back. Take a water break. Do yourself a favor. We're going to hit our third story. Mccormick spices is having a seesaw Korean. Economy Moment Little Bit. Good Yup a little bit of bad. It's a see saw moment. Snacker every kitchen should probably have a drawer stuff with McCormick. You know your mom would want it that. I can't believe this is a publicly traded stock on Wall Street. You've got aggressive kitchen real estate. We're talking Oregano turmeric curry paste coriander seeds. We've got curry powder. I have no idea why because we have the seeds. Knicks always picking the fancy stuff. I like this Real Essex Salt and Pepper Combo back for like ninety nine every grocery store. Knacker is a little spoiler alert. Here Jack. Scott. The taste buds of like a three year old. Turtle Connoisseurs Bison now. This company is proudly based in Baltimore Maryland since eighteen eighty nine where. They've been making spices mixed with Lacrosse. Sticks from like the Solvent School State Law requires a fifteen minute. Break every four hours of work so you can sprinkle some old ban. That's a critical thing now. The biggest flaw on the resume for McCormick is the one thousand nine hundred sixteen. Us Borough of chemistry investigation were investigated for black pepper purity problem. They called us at McCormick pepper and they don't like talking about him. We've actually shouldn't even abroad. Most famous product of McCormack in my opinion is old bay which is like in the state constitution of now about a quarter of its business is not spices but like condiments right they got Franks red hot sauces made by McCormick and French's classic yellow mustard. The rest of its business is like some fancy kind of custom stuff going on that you wouldn't expect them to be gotta section of their website bragging that they've teamed up with IBM on artificial intelligence. It all seems like they're overselling because basically they're just like helping you can cock special sauces like McDonald's special sauce if you're the cheesecake factory you need Salinas. Sprinkle on your stuff. You're going to the guys at McCormick. The earnings report for McCormick and its annual report. They show a helpful breakdown of the business. This is funny thing. We noticed about the annual report though. Is They actually show? What's in the gift bag for all the shareholder in ten dis and last year they were giving away truffle. Salt just want to point that out as an adorable detail to include an annual bar. The other thing we noticed when we jumped into the earnings report is that they love saying flavoring. The future pretty much as often as they can say this we noticed that McCormick is always playing a supporting role in whatever it is. They got a big picture of Sushi. But then the little sesame seeds there by McCormick. They got a delicious looking chicken leg with the barbecue sauce that McCormick spice third cameraman at the end of the movies. Like please wait till you see all the credits. He could see my name. Deborah you see the second thing. We noticed that was helpful. Is that the businesses pretty evenly balanced. If you look at the earnings about half of its business is homegoods sales like to you and your pantry and then half of its business is away from home like restaurants and caterers. Now it's expecting some interesting differences between the two for example. It's expecting double digit sales growth for home consumption business because there's all sorts of pantry. Hoarding going on because people are cooking at home during the recession and during the public health crisis but restaurants sales for McCormick are expected to plummet cheesecake. Factory has furloughed like its entire workforce. It's telling landlord is not even GONNA pay rent. Even mom and pop restaurants are shutting down and knock cooking. That means less spices that McCormack selling out to restaurants and other right so good business for the bad business for the away from home overall. This is a net negative for McCormick because it sales are down to percents. So Jack what's the takeaway for buddies flavor and flavor the future over McCormick McCormick's experiencing a classic see-saw situation knackers see-saw situation. You're gonNA start seeing this Yang Yang in around with a bunch of other companies right now. One side of the business is surprisingly surge in the krone economy but the other side of the business plummet four example. We've noticed pay pal seen a surge in people wanting to digitally or with touches payments but that's offset by the fact that fewer people are buying things in general overall transactions. "Revelation, and that gets confusing too because it was initially revelation revelation taking it back to leave it there. Lee hail of member station K U, E R, and you're listening to all things considered from NPR news. I'm Kim masters in. This is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt Bellamy of the Hollywood reporter, and Matt there was a big splashy premier in New York last few days for game of thrones. That has been a huge hit for HBO, and it is ending, and it is ending as Richard Platt Bler, the longtime head of HBO is has resigned and is leaving and John stinky, the new head of Warner media stalled by AT and T the new owners of what was Time Warner is looking to HBO to generate more content. I don't know. I mean, I wasn't at the premier neither you, but if for reading about it from a distance if felt to me like is this the end of something or can HBO continued to be be. Oh, well, that's the big question is, you know, game of thrones for the past decade has been the HBO signature show and you see up to thirty million viewers for one. One show, which is unheard of. And now they are facing for the first time a post game of thrones HBO, and yes, there are as many as four they're calling them successor series in development, and who knows if those will work, but can they amass the same audience and grow it to the extent AT and T wants to grow it without that signature show. Yeah. And veep is ending too. I mean they've been on such a role. And so I guess one of these spin offs is casting. But of course, it's gonna be a while before that's a show. And and the question is a site. Geiss question will people still be there when it returns do they love game of thrones? And that that ongoing way can they maintain that that level of whatever it was about game of thrones? That has so many people so in love with it. And and at the same time are they going to just hold onto their subscriptions waiting. Yeah. We did a pole this week in how? Reporter that show that twenty eight percent of people have unsubscribe to a channel or streaming service based on one show coming to an end, and that's an interesting stat. Because if there was ever a show that would drive interest in a network, it would be game of thrones. Which is the number one show on television. That's one issue. The second issue is that AT and T is really pushing HBO to be more of a volume player. More shows more demographics, creating content for and really trying to ramp up the output, but game of thrones was game of thrones. Because HBO took its time it spent lavishly these final six episodes are reportedly costing more than ten million dollars each, and they really, you know, it was a bespoke product that turned into a massive hit is AT and T going to give that kind of freedom to create. What will what will ultimately be the next game of thrones that we have. Idea. What that is now. Yeah. I mean, the lavishness of that party was old school HBO. I felt like it was HBO still being HBO. We we know very Well Matt that HBO throws. Some of the splashy is parties that anybody throws in Hollywood. So are they even gonna continue that tradition? This is a regime change there. So we don't know how many of the people who were at HBO are now going to remain, and whether this transition in I have to say looking big picture at all the stuff that was acquired in this Time Warner acquisition HBO is now in transition Bob Greene Blat arriving at Warner media running HBO as well as the from the cable channels, Kevin C HARA gone. At Warner Brothers studio. There's just a lot going on right now at this company. And it feels like a lot of uncertainty is AT and T has only just really taken control of this company. HBO is the key here. They've gotta get HBO. Right. Because that is the two billion dollar a year cash cow and AT and T. Needs even more profit out of HBO because it is highly leveraged, thanks to this eighty five billion dollar deal to buy Time Warner. Yeah. And there in lies the potential irony. Thank you, Matt. Thank you. That's Matt felony editorial director of the Hollywood reporter. He joins me this Monday at two o'clock on the business. I'm Kim masters, and this is the Hollywood breakdown..

"Vulture this is spring route. Joe we're witnessing a moment of massive transformation. At Warner media, which of course, is the new name for Time Warner under its AT and T ownership now that it's officially been given the okay by the court to move ahead with consolidation. That's exactly what's going on last week. We saw HBO CEO Richard ler and Turner, boss. David Levy, both leave their posts. Both men are gone. They resigned saying they didn't really see a future for themselves under the new model there. And now in their place is Robert Greene bladder familiar. Name will be heading up both entities HBO and Turner as well as the new streaming service that weren't media is about to lodge. But Joe before we talk more about that. Let's talk a little bit about both Richard Platt ler and David Levy these titans, right? Who really made their Mark at both HBO and Turner, and what kind of lost? Do you think this is for the culture at those two companies? Well, it's particularly a huge losses. HBO? I think you know, someone was telling me that they're sort of perplexity AT and T would spend so much money to. By these assets. And then let these Tuckey executives walk out the door is sort of studying, it's not completely unpredictable. Given the fact that AT and T has been very clear about what its plans are for consolidation for moving ahead with a streaming strategy. But you know, plumber was sort of the heart and soul of modern HBO. You know, he didn't build HBO that was done long before he took over he'd been there forever and running communications and being sort of a presence there. But there were other teams before him who sort of helped us salvage the sopranos and other executives who led to other big shows, but he more recently for the last decade or so is really the public face of HBO and him being gone is sort of a huge message to the greater community a certain ehre at the network is over and that's troublesome. Yeah. And I think you're right in that Plummer was sort of doubt the last throwback to the early days of HBO and HBO as sort of this unique network in the entire broadcasting and programming ecosystem so moving forward. Now, you have this new sort of setup that AT and T has been really been been keen on doing which is combining some of these disparate assets that had pretty much run as separate fiefdoms for for all these years over at Time Warner AT and T came in and said, basically, why is HBO doing some of the same stuff that Turner's doing when really they should be working as one developing as one sole voice and one soul body. Now. Some of that makes sense know, there are some shows that perhaps were developed for Turner that should have been on HBO or maybe some shows that should be developed for the streaming service instead of HBO were Turner. And now with one sort of traffic cop in air, traffic controller is what what agent described it to me. You've got Bob green Blatt, who of course, is no stranger to any of us who, you know, ranch Showtime for a time, you know. Really sort of instilled a premium patina to that network before moving onto NBC and helping revive fortunes over there. Joe what do you make of what Bob now is going to be tasked with doing? You know, look, I let's say that Bob green Blat is a good guy. Smart guy, not like AT and T is gone out and put in the head of mobility or the head of its, you know, cell phone division to run programming there. That's a good thing. So this isn't about Bob. But, but you know, what this move does is it takes away the specialness of HBO. You know, if you're a producer with the big project, and you're pitching it out there, and it's competitive and lots of people want the show, Netflix, Amazon HBO, some other companies might spend more money, but HBO offered sort of a unique universe. You knew that if you're going just HBO will now phone producer taking that product. What you just described as the benefit to me is the fear. What if I bring this show to HBO, and they develop it in Casey boys who runs entertainment for HBO on the west coast, develops it loves it. But then Bob rebound comes this. There's no I think this really belongs on TBS or. Streaming service will suddenly you don't have that same sense of security that your within this great vote. He world that was HBO even though was big company. So that gets ruined. And and I think that's, you know, HBO for the longest time ran to the slogan. It's not TV. It's HBO. Well now that this is happened. You know what? It's just. Yeah. And it is feeling a lot more like some of the other conglomerates that long ago did this when you look at Viacom or you look at AMC networks a lot of companies that a couple of years ago started really putting together all of their brands under one oversight. Now again that helps with you know, maybe saving some costs. And you know, you have sort of one voice developing everything for for everyone, and that even took place a TBS TNT, which along ago sort of were merged under one management, but this takes a whole different level. And Joe the other thing you talked about the loss of the HBO sort of patina, and and the culture well to some degree and everyone so focused on HBO. They're not noticing that Turner as we know it is is history. The company that. Ted Turner founded all these years ago on the backs of a tiny little independent TV station, Atlanta that grew into this conglomerate of CNN Cartoon Network adult swim. That's all been put out piecemeal. Now, you've got Turner sports that will now follow under the direction of Jeff Zucker at CNN. You've got Cartoon Network adult swim that will now go under the oversight of Warner Brothers chairman and chief executive Kevin Suji HARA, and you've got other changes going on onto but to some degree. That means the end of Turner, Ted Turner was cable before cable.

"When he was shooting the climb co-director Jimmy Chen feared adding cameras to an already precarious situation could have lethal consequences. This week while I'm out of town where sharing an episode of the KCRW podcast the document in which our colleague Matt Hoffman talks to married filmmaking. Couple Jimmy chin and China Bashar Ellie about how and why they made their dizzying film free solo. But first, we banter, stay tuned. It's the business from KCRW. I am joined by my partner in banter, Matt felony low Matt are there so high there from from Lisbon, I I have just been at a large tech conference. But thanks to the magic of technology. I can banter from far I have to say this conference was absolutely mammoth. And there were literally tens of thousands of people at this thing, and I'm not a tech person. So it was it was all very strange new to me. But but back to the business at hand Hollywood, as you know, as we have discussed there's very little more precious in Hollywood at this time than a franchise and studios therefore studios. TV networks are incentivized to milk these franchises when they're fortunate enough to find them until they are, you know, shriveled shadows of themselves. Watching dead is one reason example, it has been somewhat shriveling key, actor and. Through Lincoln who plays Rick Grimes. So I guess has Slade many of the Walking Dead. I am not a Walking Dead person. I assume you can confirm this for me, Matt he's kinda wants out. He wants to leave the show. He's a bread. He doesn't want to be sweltering Georgia running around the woods with zombies much longer any longer. So so what is AMC to do with this precious, but fading asset three movies, which will air or be or play somewhere? We don't know yet. Yeah. And what this really is is this is an admission by AMC, and they're not alone that they cannot let this franchise die. Even though it's ratings are not what they once were is still a top five drama and more importantly, it delivers a invaluable audience to AMC that they can't let it go away and movies have typically been criticized for overplaying the franchises milking these things to death. But what we're seeing now is this is happening in television to Walking Dead is not alone. The breaking bad creators, just announced they're doing a movie spin off of breaking bad, and they already have better call Saul you see over to HBO game of thrones is getting a prequel series one of five that is in development. This first one that they're doing actually has some cast members, including me watts but you're going to see more of this because as television audiences fracture and decrease on. Traditional channels. They need to have these pre branded things that will lure an audience, and what is more pre branded than a spin off of an existing hit. So you're going to see more of these hits replicate themselves. I mean, I don't know I could see a Walking Dead movie, but three I mean, we have seen many old TV shows rebooted, but this is a different thing. I mean, these are things where the so-called corpse of the show is not even cold. I mean, Walking Dead is still a thing. It's not even dead yet. They are running out before the memories of faded. And it's a nostalgia thing. I mean, I guess nostalgia has become compressed in in this world where we're not static five minutes after something's on the air, or or in the movie theaters or even while it's still playing as a show. I don't know. I do we think this is a good idea has it been tested. I'm not sure if anybody's done that in a way that was affective well at AMC, they've got better call Saul. Which a lot of people thought would be a disaster. Breaking bad is one of the greatest television shows of all time, and it's corpse was barely cold wind better call Saul launched and that showed as well frame. See and has picked up some Emmys. So I think it's all. On the execution like everything. But I just think also the level of skepticism has to be high when you're thinking about these things because you know, they are not doing this for the creative reasons they're doing it to milk. The franchise. Although to play the other side, you know, Vince Gilligan he is breaking bad and better call Saul. And I would Bank on him being able to do this without a second thought game of thrones on the other hand, not the same creators. I dunno where audiences ready to let go of game of thrones. Or was it played out can somebody else who's not the, you know, the guys who originally figured out how to make this thing work. Make this thing work. I time will tell I think it's a worthwhile. Gambled given the credible popularity certainly of of game of thrones. Well, and you can't not do it. That's the point here if you are Richard Platt running HBO or Casey boys doing programming you get fired. If you don't have a gigantic hit and game of thrones is the biggest hit on television. So why not just do a spinoff? You can have a something that is going to have immense pre branded interest. And if you don't do it. It's almost fiscally irresponsible. Meanwhile, speaking of game of thrones HBO, there's a fight going on as we speak right now. And you need fights do arise and get settled routinely. But now it's getting to be a bit HBO has been off the dish network since November. I this is what you call carriage dispute. Meaning that, you know, the dish network doesn't want to pay the bucks that HBO would demand for airing. It's very popular premium content. Allowing dish to carry it. The these things have happened with broadcast networks these have been big fights. And sometimes they do pull content off the air, and they get resolved. However, this is the first time this has happened with HBO, and it is notable that had happened in the wake of AT and T's acquisition of Time Warner which includes HBO among many into the crown jewel of the assets that AT and T acquired and there, you know, there would be an argument to be made that with all of this power by acquiring time. Time Warner AT and T would promptly throw its weight around. And they certainly deny that they were going to do that. And however, they do claim this was dishes decision playing hardball to drop the the programming from from HBO, but I will not nonetheless somehow HBO is not on the dish network. Yeah. And there's speculation as to who instigated that. But you know, I think this is the sign of a lot of things that are to come now that HBO is owned by distributor, a distributor that owns its own satellite network, direct TV. And you know, if you can't get it on dish. You might very well say, well, I guess I'll just switch. Thank you. Thank you. That's Matt Bellamy editorial director of the Hollywood reporter. This week. We're sharing an episode of the document KCRW podcast created and hosted by Matt Hoffman who also happens to have created the business. Now, he craps radio stories about the making of documentaries. This episode of the document is all about the new film free solo. We'll let that take it from there. What you're hearing is the sound of Alex Honolulu, climbing El capitan, that's the thirty two hundred feet of granite that towers over seventy valley. Alex calls it the most impressive wall on earth. And he would know because he's the first and only person to ever free solo L cap, which means that he claimed it alone without ropes or any other kind of safety gear. I know it sounds a little over the top. But it was quite literally perfection or death. And this is the voice of mountaineer and photographer Jimmy chin. Who was there filming it all I've always been conflicted about shooting free soloing just because it's so dangerous. It's hard to not imagine your friend falling through the frame Tuesday. People in the documentary world are always going on about whether the presence of the camera changes what it captures the usually don't talk about whether their cameras will kill their subjects. But that's exactly what China's a rally and Jimmy Chen had to worry about how they were filming Alex Honolulu, climbing ten for their new movie free solo, and they started worrying about it the moment. Alex, uttered, the words El capi tan and free solo in the same sentence. I immediately asked CHAI three or four times he said what she said. Oh, he's he said he wants to free so cap, and I said he said what I mean, it took me a bit of time to really kind of wrap my head around it at which point. I took a step back and said, I don't I don't know if we should make this film because your mind goes to immediately the worst case scenario chatty. Remember those early conversations? No, it was very intense. It really is a moment to fresh depaz and to stop and say like is there something we even want to be involved in? Alex.

The hell just happened and Jason to like we, I think we, I don't know, man, I think we all thought it was pretty funny just said, hey, they're going to talk about this show for sure tomorrow. Like who knows if they would've at all that was kind of that was that was really interesting TV, and he was right. Do you think the die was cast by the HBO execs after that one? Because he only had three shows and it was it was quarterly. So you're next shows not from a three months, but do you think in the back of their mind, they're like, this is already done? I do. I didn't know that then. And at the time when they cancelled it, they blamed show Pacific that Tom Hanks did about World War Two in the Pacific theater, and it came in way over budget and I was the last one in. "The documentary and i had a good feeling about it the whole time the hardest part for me as a hoarder is what to leave out you know what material to us to express certain periods of his life because you know if you watch all stuffy did it's also funny you know there's so many larry sanders scenes that could be the scene you show to explain what the show is like there's so many interviews gary talks about his life that are so funny but you can't show that much of them so i might find the mazing half hour with tom snyder and i would be so sad that there was no reason to put it in the documentary but i want everyone to watch it because it's something so luckily i said hbo in the middle of the process i don't think this is a one part documentary i think this is something that goes along side the eagles documentary in the bob dylan george harrison documentaries as you know two part four hour documentaries and richard platt ler said just make what it should be and is very rare you have a supporter like that casey boys was to hbo they just said we just wanted to be great and let's talk about it when you're done just show us and i showed him and they were thrilled because gary was important to hbo because the larry sanders show although not a giant hit it made them realize hbo should basically be like the larry sanders show in in a sense of digging deep going for quality going for innovation and they point to that as the show that helps them define what the network should be will one of the things that really comes across in the doc is that you show how many people he helped to young people who in a way mentor including obviously you so what i'm wondering is when i see you with camille or amy schumer or lena dunham or all the people who you've done that with our you consciously trying to kind of emulate what he did and pay for it in a way or or is that you think you just just coincidental i think that on some.

"Happy to be here so first of all let's talk about why you left the warm virtuous embrace of public broadcasting go good hbo are assuming the answer is you don't worry about money fundraising budgets that's all good now or you hit the nail on the head actually i hadn't thought about leaving i really thought which go down with my boots on as i say american masters because it meant so much to me and it was such blood sweat and tears every year to breathe life into this series and keep it alive because i really had to raise money every here to make the kind of films i want it to make but i i started talking with richard platt at hbo run in the joint who heads the joy and his wonderful guy and he said aren't you tired of raising money learn ago and they knew what to say and i thought that's why he's the head of hvo he went right of as soft spot you don't have to thirty five years i think he might be right i'm tired of it yeah so so for your first documentary after american masters how did you decide o steven spielberg is is the guy i want to do well and always wanted to students are a fan of his and i had always wanted to steven and i had met him because we interviewed him for several different american masters documentaries and we had a lot of fun he enjoyed it and i enjoyed him and it was just you know sometimes it just happens you know there's a a a a spark yeah but i didn't expect i would be able to have that much time and never occurred to me i thought it maybe have four interviews and he's invent many outfits so i thought he times you dr i least thirteen and probably a little bit more i can't remember exactly how many how how long do the film picked may two years now south at eighty seven other interviews.
