The Mothman Cometh
"This podcast isn't so much about hidden history as it is about aww forgotten event and that's the case. Today's podcast the moth man. The town of point pleasant is located in West. Virginia is a county seat for Mason County County population of about forty five hundred. The town isn't without its history though. Mark Twain grandparents called quite pleasant home as did kid kid pros who in nineteen forty came up with the design for the cheat and one of the last confederate generals John Closely and made his final Home there and died a Grimm's landing in nineteen twenty seven when you enter downtown point pleasant. You can't miss that twelve foot statue. The moth map the first off man side was by five men digging graves the cemetery and Clendenin West Virginia. Not far from point. Pleasant wasn't the date was November. Sixteenth nineteen sixty six. The next sighting of what was described as a man with giant wings of blood. Red Eyes was reported reported to the sheriff by two couples. Roger and Linda scarberry and Stephen Mary Mallett who said it followed their car that November number. The point pleasant register printed an article titled Couple Seaman Size Bird Creature or something. The national press picked up on the story and spread it across the United States of their sightings flooded into the sheriff's office including from to volunteer firemen with the sightings. Came Trad Pity after nearly a year of reported sightings and point pleasant on December Fifteenth Nineteen Sixty Seven. The silver bridge collapsed killing forty six residents in Russia. A Moscow sighting of the moth man was attributed to the nineteen ninety nine bombing of a large apartment complex. In point pleasant alone there for over two hundred reported sightings was similar descriptions. The moth man was also cited in the United Kingdom Germany France and Ireland. The interesting in fact is that all the sightings have nearly the same description unfortunately the sightings are often related to tragedy and from this emerged. John John Keells book the Moth Man Prophecies followed by the movie in Two Thousand Two starring Richard Gere titled The Mothman Prophecies But like like bigfoot flying saucers aliens the moth man despite many reported sightings from half a dozen countries and upstanding citizens with no ambition ambition for fame or financial gain or dismissed by skeptics while the original side of the Mothman comes from a region known as the Ohio Valley and are often written off as imagination poorer under educated a religiously superstitiously influenced individuals many of the sightings in Chicago. Oh the UK. Germany France Russia in Ireland can't be so easily dismissed.

"In process. Yes we thought they were ten. We lost in transit. There were eleven we just kind of the days ago and different parts of the world you know some from Washington Washington. DC The person that we just found out about was from London treatment was available in all these places. Yes and I think that points doc that not everyone on treatment of surviving you get to the real nitty gritty there. Richard I mean you know as much as one can banish the stigma not. Everybody gets the treatment. How did you feel when you met some of these people and you know when you know that? Sometimes they get diagnosed late sometimes. They just don't have the treatment particularly if they live in the poor parts of the world. Yeah Yeah I mean look. This has changed radically even fifteen years ago. David this was still a a death sentence and and I it was the sadness atmosphere we had heard was my closest friend of that time and the tragedy that he was living to me was was was ripping my heart out as nothing I could do and here was somebody who had resources. He was living a very well to do life. He had money. At connections he was able. We'll get the best treatment that was available and it wasn't enough now. Things have changed pretty radically. We do have strategies now. We've medical strategies to to help but at Africa they're not getting them enough in the Caribbean not getting enough We still don't have continue. We don't have complete openness about who is sick and who isn't to both of you. I'm just going to read some of these status that we have because it is pretty awful because in the United States was Princeton's sixty nine nine percent of newly infected people in two thousand seventeen we'll African Americans or Latinos in two thousand seventeen African American women counted for six in ten fifty fifty nine percent of new HIV diagnoses amongst women. Eight of the top states. are in the south by AIDS Rate. HALF OF AMERICANS LIVING WITH HIV still still not receiving the regular treatment. They need it's one thing to de stigmatize and it's another thing to really get the regimes and the treatment routines that they I need right. I would say you know in our case what we're trying to do is to work as artists to support. All the things that need to happen medically and they do need to happen. Medically Medical Michael Doctors as opposed to people in the humanities arts like myself need to be stepping in and they are In this particular case I can just mention that U. N. as and other International organizations have set targets and these targets. Are there reachable and if we can help to reach them through artistic practice and storytelling. You want to do that The the main target that everyone talks about is the ninety nine hundred ninety target. Which is the idea that ninety percent of people who are living with HIV should know that they're living with HIV? It shouldn't be a mystery to them. And then ninety percent of those people should be receiving treatment and then ninety percent of those who are receiving treatment. Get to the point where they're viral. Presidents in in the body is undetectable because a person who is undetectable cannot transmit HIV to another person. And that's how we're GONNA break the back of the epidemic and just one other thing anguish seems to be sort of a little counter intuitive. The bulk of money that is spent on this issue is spent for care rather than prevention. Yeah well luckily in this particular case we're getting to the point where care is prevention. Because if you can establish this on transmittable function in the body and it's the short former it is you equals you. Everybody was talking about legalzoom especially people who were living with HIV. If you can get to that point then you're not going to be transmitted virus to New People So you know. Luckily care care can be comprehension and we also have prep. which is this idea that you can take a pill if you feel that you're at risk for HIV that would prevent you from Having the virus transmitted to you so all these strategies are are starting to blend. Seems to me They they are both prevention care at the same time so I wanted to ask you Richard. Because you've you've basically spent a huge amount of your career being an activist and being concerned about communities whether it's the Tibetan community whether it's the community of of migrants and refugees who allies trying to cross from North Africa across the Mediterranean. You've been there. We have pictures of you on one of these rescue boats and particularly typically you have stood up and you are still being counted on the Tabet issue and it's cost you some somewhat and I just want to ask you maybe not in dollars and cents. Maybe even you don't think it has but some people say that you know you went from these big big big big big. Big Sort of Hollywood blockbusters officer Gentlemen Chicago Pretty Woman You know on and on these great movies to equally wonderful indie movies but almost by happens. Look I I understand that people think that I have sacrificed. It's a great deal but the reality is those indie movies. I'm making now which I happen to like a lot. Some of them are quite adventurous. are also so the same kind of movies that I made in the studio system with the studio system doesn't make those movies anymore so I'm making the same movies. We're just finding other money how to make them how to put them out there. Does it bother you. That China is one of the biggest markets is being pressure rather big studios but maybe not working with them anymore. They're being pressured not to use you in in films. Well I don't make those movies anyhow. I mean what they want is the big. CGI movies the marvel movies. And I don't I don't I'm drawn to them. I don't make them the perfectly fine but that's not what I do. So there's no real effect on me to some other people who do make those movies I think yes it does affect them. Yeah we have to speak for each other. We're in this together. We can feed each other. We can have health care for each other. We can house each other. We can embrace each other. We could love each other can happen so easily. So this crazy tribalism which destroys community take small tribes but destroys real community is really the outlier. I think that's a really really good place to end. Richard Gere David Gear through. Positive is thank you both very very much for talking about this by David. Thanks for having us. I love my brother. "richard gere" Discussed on Trailer Junkies Podcast
"Richard Gere believes him, but there are a few tells is character gives not verbally, but just through smirks and through these little asides and you feel like this is one of those cases where where Kevin Harrison junior plays who plays loose Edgar. He just embodies this, this smirk, you know. So you never know what that smirk means. But yeah, I mean, I think the biggest thing that I picked up from it was, it was less about race as it was about privilege. Right. So that's why said the black, I'm black conflict. You know, you have the woman who has the conflict with lose, and lose is dominated by the white family. And you kind of touched on it, where it's like the white privilege or the privilege family that he comes from. From and it kind of like erases the, the racial component. And it just strictly looks at the socioeconomic component. Right. And then there he is he comes from like having the privilege essentially, and then the teacher. I don't even know what she is principal. Maybe. Or I'm not even sure and she teacher teacher, and she's looking at him like, you know, the issues the problems, the conflict that are that rise up in the story, and it has nothing to do with black or white, but more it has to do with, you know. Wealth versus poverty, or whatever you know what I mean. And I think that's very like I mean, the that plays a lot into I think we're society is in his moving towards right? And the other thing I loved about this trailer specifically is when you take your framework of what you're saying about socio economic differences. And as it introduces you to the characters within the trailer, the trailer tells, you know, some trailers stray trailers, where they do the story sell, they tell you what the story is going to be, but there's something very special about the way that the loose chillers, laid out because it shows you the rich family, you know, it shows you adopted this boy, and how the great man this boy has become. So you're already like so rooting for them that the minute the tables turn against him. You're on his side. Yeah. Right. Yeah. And then they spend the whole middle part where they're actually like. You're kind of going back and forth. Eat on understand where you are. So kind of throws, it's really it's a it's a trailer plays out in three acts. The same. Way movie does. And by the end, you're totally INA Russia test of where you fall on who's actually telling the truth. It's sort of like they build it up to where while this kid came from some totalitarian regime, they rescued him. And he's, you know, like he's going to go on to great things. And then they kind of build that portion up, and then what I hear you saying is, then they put you in limbo. And then the third act is like kind of taking him down. Yeah. Building him up. He's like, walking the tightrope. And then it's like he's not who you believe him to be right? Sort of thing. Yeah. And which which I think plays back into the Lucifer side of it because, you know, if you if you want to, and, you know, only seeing the trailer obviously, but I think the way you're saying it is he or if you think about Lucifer? He was like God's chosen angel who thin gets cast out and becomes, like Satan, essentially. And so this guy is kind of built up as like the chosen and then it ends as him being almost cast out. And I was tweeting about this earlier today and yesterday and Matt Nigeria who's on at next big picture, next big picture. He seen this. And he said, it's one of the best movies in the year, so already seen the movie. Yeah, I think it was at Sundance. Oh, okay. Okay loose. Who's did I miss it? Who's who's, who's the distribution for it and see, so who's at Sundance already? Why is it? Why can't I find it? Well, you're looking that up man. This beer is like kicking your ass? Oh eleven point seven. I'm glad I gave some Clarisa I still have like a quarter beer to go and I'm like ready to follow ver. Sing is brutal. So it's part of their one hitter series now I was really what do they mean by one hitter series? I know exactly what they mean by their one hitter series. Do we figure this is coming out or what? It's coming out in, August on August. Okay. In august. Yeah. And it's by it's pretty spy neon. Oh, that's right, neon. I mean I'd like to see this one. I mean, I think this would be a cool one. Do you handle disputes between teachers and students? Sometimes yeah, it depends. It depends I would say the way this plays out. It just seems like a carries on a little bit longer. Right. I would say typically disputes are much more petty than this. No, I'm serious. Like I would also say that teachers tend to have the upper hand in so far as they're not gonna just get in for tit for tat with with students. So it's like, okay you're this way. And that's what you believe, and you're going to challenge me. That's fine. You could challenge me, but, you know, this is where we are in the curriculum in this. We're going to do and the teacher just moves on, you know, like I don't see teachers sitting there like arguing and trying to, like, hold their ground and then yelling at the kids it, and it, it's not worth it. Well, yeah, it's like their fifteen sixteen seventeen like you're not going to like, you know, debate a kid and stage for the like the DNC or something. Right. Yeah. I mean that's exactly right. That's exactly right. But no, there's times when a kid doesn't want to stop and you have to intervene, and you're like dude back off. Like this is you just have to set up the scenario for the kid. You know, I would say I don't think I've ever had a parent, not apparent parents, though tend to take size kid, but I don't think I've ever had a teacher, who was, like going so hard at a kid, I had to tell them to back off. Right. You know, like I don't think that's ever happened. If it has like you, you should be teaching right? No. I think this looks cool. I mean, I think there's a lot of education side of the house aside. You know, I think there's a lot of like socioeconomic racial stuff that's going on. And I think the thing I like about it. Is that the way they played the racial stuff? It's like black. I'm black in the sense, you know. And it's more about like. Social status. Maybe because the kid has a higher social status than the teacher does. So I don't know. I don't know. What do you think? That's definitely the way. Yeah, that's definitely the way it's portrayed throughout the trailer. And, you know, I feel like it takes you on the journey the movie, and you'll be there. If you like the feeling that you get from watching the three acts of the trailer, then you'll enjoy the movie, you know, it's like a good representation of it. Exactly. All right. Man. We covered like, what tons of like what we've been watching movies, the dark crystal. I mean, like, oh, kinds of stuff. I mean, puppets you name it, sometimes I feel like a puppet. Puppet. All right. So thank you, and you have to go finish Black Panther now Black Panther. And then next week we have a new interview. I think we have a guest was it Hubbard right? Yes. Joe Hubbard Joe Hubbard looking forward and. Yeah. Look. Oh. Hey, last thing before we get outta here. Yes, you mentioned how you get to talk with me every week. But one minute of Jason Kella, Kansas and your nerve. And you're like I don't know why nervous Jimmy every week. What are you saying billionaire? Yeah. That's right. Is that? What is that takes a billionaire to make you nervous, if we're talking about, like socio economics, and we're talking about the last movie? Yes, it does have a intimidation factor. Okay. Okay. I got you, but I read his whole book angel about angel investing, and I'm ready to figure out a way to send the kids to start up camp instead of college where they take all their college tuition, they would have spent and put it into start investing in startups to get that unicorn, you know, and I think I think you could you can make a separate class of investor. Is there really a startup camp? No. But this is what I'm saying it should. Oh, dirt. The university where we just, you know, we set you up with a cohort of connections in the startup space in the venture capitalist base, and the angel space and instead of going to college they learn how to do business by meeting with one hundred startups in a year. So I hear this two ways give me your money. I'll get your kid in a startup not promising it's going to go anywhere. Right. And number two, is, you know, Mark Cuban you know, you're just going to come here and pitch me or thing, and then we're going to do is start up and I mean, I think it's already been done. Yeah. I'm not talking about shark tank but yeah, something like that. Right. But what I'm saying, though is like you're really gonna take some like seventeen eighteen year old kid and be like, hey, dude. Hey, you were going to spend two hundred grand on college. Screw that. You give me two hundred grand in give you a chance. Oh, no, no. They don't give us the two hundred grand. They, they make two hundred granted investments. How are you making money? No. It's not not making money. I'm just trying to figure out a way to say that I'm sending the kids to college, and then send them to this thing. Oh, your own kids. Yes. Oh, I thought it was like you're trying to start an entrepreneurial venture fill, like, fleece other kids out of their cats. No, no. This is just for my kids. Gosh, they're off somewhere doing something important. But maybe it's not college. Oh my God. Dude, we can have another conversation another time. I've thought the same things like you know, do you want to do two hundred fifty thousand dollars student loans for, like bullshit, Bong hits. Are just like go be a plumber, like and make a hundred grand a year. Like, I'm not I'm not even like making light of that I'm dead serious, like I would rather. See my kid like you know, I don't know like driving a tractor round like pushing dirt making like a hundred bucks an hour versus. You know, make it thirty grand a year with one hundred grand student loans. You know, like, wow. No, you're right about that, though. I misunderstood what you were saying. I thought you were saying you were going to open up, some, you know, like Trump university. Where you were going to like, have kids, come in and like, give you money and you're going to like introduce to start up feeling. Sorry. It didn't work. I guess I got your money. Like what the heck ask podcast? Right. Yeah. Exactly dude. I got.

"Could save you fifteen percent or more openness week perhaps exclusively the Super Bowl will be played this Sunday, and we are so pleased to welcome in for the final time this season. The man of beat me out for the MVP of Super Bowl twenty nine hall of fame quarterback. Steve Young lettuce store with us. It's a general question. How a person game plans for a Super Bowl? Do you place your faith in the bread and butter stuff that you've done all year, or you tempted to go razzle dazzle and do something completely, you know, outside the lines all the money will just fill over razzle dazzle go. Would you say Richard Gere, Richard Gere? Yeah. Yeah. Resum? You gotta stay with what brought you. I mean, that's no question. But you these are to tip of the spear innovative teams, and so they're going to come with fifteen innovations because they do that every week. And so in many ways, the question is kind of contextual to the fact that if it was just a bread and butter kind of team you do not want to go throw it in some razzle-dazzle to the Super Bowl, you'll lose the first quarter. But both these teams are razzle-dazzle right by your deficient. Tony he's they they wanna bring. They don't have five things to do in the in the first quarter kinda show some new wrinkles. They have five in the first quarter five in the second quarter and ten at halftime. And so this is going to be a lot of fun to watch. Both these coaches bring out every new they have all the razzle dazzle in the world. Understandably Tom Brady would not give Jared Goff any advice on how to win the Super Bowl. But you I think Steve three of those rings say you played on the winning team three times in the Super Bowl. So what advice would you have Jared Goff going into this thing? I would go into the locker room with dominant sue and an errand Donald and just tell them, look, whatever I'm making today, if we win three hundred forty two thousand dollars it is yours because if you play great football, and you dominate like you did against New Orleans Saints last week. I can make all kinds of screw ups down fourteen nothing. I can throw a bicker too. And we can still win. And so that's the key. I don't think there's they've faced the beast last week in New Orleans down fourteen nothing and then come back and win and championship format. They're not gonna there's nothing about being new to the Super Bowl that Jared Goff. Oh, you're going to be overwhelmed or no there's a neutral field. It's gonna be a lot easier than last week against a team. That's, you know, explosive. We'll say, obviously, very great football. But just not you'd have to score forty five to win the football game. And to me, I think more than anything if that defensive line shows up and puts Tom Brady in a bind. That's the key. Let's get to Tom Brady. Tom Brady's forty one years old all the questions about Brady are always the same. You know, you're going to quit winning going to quit. It's always about that. He could if he wins this game go out on top how much appeal does going out on top have to atop tour player. Tony everyone dreams of it. Right. I mean, that's what you already Lewis went out on top. It's the best. But Tom Brady he lives on top. He doesn't have talk. If there. Having a replacement consider as forty two what plan the pages to replace Tom Brady at forty two. None. He sits on the Super Bowl every year. It doesn't matter. He's on top. He lives on top going out on top. It's it's going to happen by definition. So if he wins, this is what would he say, oh, I don't want to win next. He's going to forget it. There's no Tom set. This. There's different than everybody else. It's over Steve. I know with absolute certainty you played against tougher defenses in the NFC playoffs one year after another after another after another then either one of these teams has defensively, but which one of these defense is would you rather face? I go back to the dumber consumer Aaron Donald last week against the saints. He took max who's all pro great player center and just jammed him back three yards like, and that's what he can do if he wants to and it feels like sometimes Adama can kinda shows up and sometimes he doesn't and the game..

"What really struck me was that the uh so cool uh prostitutes she will be robert was very enamoured of the man who hired her richard gere because she he is vastly attractive and um he treated her somewhat well but serious is scene where uh she is attacked by chasing alexander his lawyer and that's considered a a horrible moment of for her and she defence ourselves against him uh salting her but uh you know the message was clear that when there is an attractive man assaulting you it's not as terrible as an unattractive man than i think that has come up a lot uh with um you know the me to man um harvey weinstein and some of the other cases set their does seem to be a selectiveness that comes out sure look ism in this pace case pertaining to the man have you thought about that dynamic julie yeah i think that's an interesting wrinkled to it i mean i think part of it is that hollywood does sometimes resort to a very sort of basic mm aesthetic thing i i it's it's her it's a hard thing to deserve give a term too but where they just equate you know the beauty with good an ugliness with evil and that's like a very basic a steady cue that is you know kind of hurtful and reductive in in other ways besides just what she's talking about um but i think that that is the case where you know if you understand as the viewer that this relationship has been set up to be a romance like you know she is going to end up with richard gere so therefore like everything that happens along the way is part of their love story and that's just how it's frame to you whereas if you put the same action in the may be framed it in the way of the jason alexander a solid you might see it in the same way um have you look back recently at some tv shows or movies and thought all turn it of louis wowed they really got it right when all these others got it wrong oh wow i wish i had come.
