"Point Right way It is international data is a month Commemorating the dada movement in art. The 13 days of the celebration. I know you want to know also include July 15th August 16 September 18 October 26 on. Why those dates If you gotta ask You ain't got it right. That holiday was first proclaimed by Lawrence, Kansas Mayor Book Hi Burger as a celebration of avant garde anti bourgeois irrationality in Lawrence, Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, and it took 2000 sort of surreal. Yeah. Choice. All right. The first time this holiday was celebrated widely as opposed to merely locally was Friday, May 5th 2000 Some say it takes casual Friday a little too far. Like nudist Friday. Not that far Shirtless Oh, Tyler's jacket list Pantsless senseless. You are looking for the international celebration known as No Pants day That was about 1/4 guests, so I think it's worth seven points. I'm celebrating it now. Sandra Yes, sir. First celebrated on March 15th 1953. It spawned big hit song and then a television special for Karen and Richard Carpenter. You weren't even alive. Then they were youngsters. What did they say? Hey, 1958 months for three. Karen Carpenter had perfect pitch, which is unusual for a drummer. She was a drilling. Is that right? That's right about that. What? No Peanuts wasn't around yet Especial back in the fifties. I could give you some help to put you on perhaps the right track. Okay. It was inaugurated six years after Roswell. By the F S B alien day and has something to do with aliens. You today, my friend Probe day. Even some clue this'd a bigger hint. Events include the global sending of telepathic messages. Oh, yet to space. My friend, the space man something what Perversions? It's very much about my friend, The space man. Something with space feeling alien. Get together Day alien. Get together. Day is a very good summary of what it's about. And you have earned eight points with your excellent guesses. Does the other side happened to know it? Uh, Extraterrestrial day. Yes, well, it is world contact day and I know you all want to know about that song, which is originally by the group Klaatu. It was titled Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft. Do you remember it Now In the carpenters, carpenters had a TV special called the Carpenters. Space Encounters. Tim, Can you remind them what that sense as like, Here.

"G in radio. I'm rather James and you're sitting here playing the carpenters. What is wrong with you? Well, it's Richard Carpenter 74th birthday. So happy birthday to Richard Carpenter and actually all you get from love. His love song is one of the few I could tolerate. 1977 on AM Apparently the rest of the public wasn't with me on that It peaked at number 35. But, yeah, Happy happy we're talking with Melissa Venable, who is the online education advisor for best colleges dot com. And while online was a thought before, it is now a necessity, and that's really true K 12 as well as higher education and what I'm wondering for some people. Melissa Colleges are obviously not entirely but largely a social experience. The idea that the school they picked will have the amenities and all the the normally in person type events you're expecting. Now. Suddenly, it's kind of ground to a halt. Are there any college is that right now of which you're aware are still open campus and business as usual. No, I don't know of any that are completely business as usual. I know that some her bringing on students in smaller groups so it might be split in half in a course, for example, and some go to classes on Mondays and while others are online, and they switch so that there's a mix of on campus and online or remote learning, but I think it's affected pretty much everyone everywhere on some level. What has that done with the dropout rate overall? There's definitely a good bit of number reporting out there right now I'm reading everything from enrollments are down the hall from 2.5% of 4% of scene that first year students, especially Would have been, you know, First year freshman If you will that this current semester this fall as much as a 16% drop in enrollment, so it's definitely affecting. How many students decided to continue on this ball now? What's interesting is for the kids who are continuing on and they're doing online education. I wonder if the dropout rate among students who have been tackling it online has risen as well. I think we're gonna We're we're going to see that The numbers come out, probably in the next semester, So I think it's a really tough one to get your arms around. You know, I talked like my colleagues who are working in different universities across the country fairly regularly and You know they're they're saying that they have a lot of things that just don't walk to do online. It's not what they Thought they were going to be doing on DH. It's certainly not their preference, so we do have a a good number of students who are just choosing either Wait it out. And restart or we have some that are working through it Best can I would assume, but also to a degree would depend on discipline. Like if you're looking at Roman literature. Well, you could probably be a lot more easily at home than somebody who was studying anatomy or chemistry. So when you have things that normally had a lab God forbid you live next to one of these students. What? What are they doing to get around that, Because obviously, in some of these, the lab work is crucial to the gorse. You are absolutely correct. I think science labs or one of the things that over the years have been Ah, ah, sticking point where there's an argument against online. It's like what? You can't do a lab because your chemistry lab Um, but you can. There are you're always so work through it. There are at home lab kit, Uncle on which you're pretty sophisticated guy, come with lots of instruction. There are faculty members who do a lot of demonstration online, you know, using video show how the you know physics, principles, work and what not, and then there are also simulations. Computer simulations where You can move things around on screen to simulate there. Ah, chemistry, hydration experiment or something like that. There are ways to do it Take a lot of time to set up to develop. I'm the programming side from a logistical side for things like lab kit is certainly Have a cost associated with them as well. But you're right. It depends on the course a lot of very different process and taking a literature course and developing an online version of that versus Ah, chemistry. 101 in some schools are choosing chemistry courses, not sort of thing to do the lecture hall portion of the course. Online and then rotating in small groups to do the labs in person, which makes sense, because I don't know if I was going to a surgeon. I would not want to think he performed an autopsy on line or worse yet when he got there is a resident, you know, I would hope their love. Yes, um some classroom experience their own. Obviously, they're taking advantage of that as much as possible. And of course, the other thing is when we were sold this lock down last last spring, we were told it was for two weeks. And so I think initially, probably there weren't many things that were done to prepare for this because until reasonably recently, no one realised they'd really have to now at this point school wise, what with schools thinking or they even trying to predict when they will be back to quote unquote normal. Will there ever be a normal what's going on? I think we're a good ways away from from normal as as something close to what we know what we experienced before the pandemic, And then the campus closures. Um I think schools what we're seeing what you're reading these days. They're they're putting the time and the resources that they have into Holy developing these courses so so that they have these options in the future and also as options for students who might prefer a mix of online courses on campus horses. Up when this first happened in the spring that quick, you know, weak that looks like one week or so that everything shifted, and it became something more like remote learning if the phone is opposed to like.

"Now What's interesting is Dan before you're talking about like how they probably had like. Fancy cars because they were huge rockstars now obviously, Jen did have a corvette because that was the car that was in the accident. But what's interesting is they weren't fulltime musicians. While they were working as musicians both college students. Jan Was Med and dean was a designer. And after Jen's accident, Dean Formed Kittyhawk graphics which specialized in designing album covers. That's crazy look imagine you have these imagine you have these these hits and then you just like also on the side I'm going to be a disaster So I mean the lesson here in stand school kids. So, album artwork by Dean torrence. includes. The nitty gritty dirt band's Uncle Charlie and his dog teddy from nineteen seventy. It was a nineteen seventy-one Grammy nominee Steve. Martin's. Let's get small in Nineteen, seventy seven and Linda Ronstadt? S-? Album called Linda Ronstadt. In Nineteen seventy-two, he won the best album cover grammy award in Nineteen seventy-one for the self titled Album by the Band Pollution Oh sure that great band pollution remember. Nation grammy-winning. Out and cover from a band that. I don't think exists. Everyone can tell you who won the grammy for best album cover design. That's a very. Well known categories that everyone knows exists. And I get from you guys laughing that they don't but that's the stuff I kind of nerd out over of course, you know. I mean I'm joking I was not aware that there was a grammy for. Album covers so good for him Michael. We've had conversations about album covers where you've said, and you know who designed this album covers. Answer nobody really knows ankles. So there is a nineteen, seventy, four rolling stone article by POMERANZ called the road back from deadman's curve it led to renewed interest in Jan and dean and a few years later in nineteen seventy eight, there was a TV movie called deadman's curve, and that also increase their popularity and again, this was in the seventies there is that renewed interest in. Fiscal Sixties Right Pop Culture. And Music So after the success of the TV movie janiking began touring again with the beach boys. I mean, who else were they tore with? Eight honest. But with. was like Jan and dean. Why are you singing beach boys songs? This was. Come on guys. Let's go surfing none of us know how to. Literally, the only one Dennis. Dennis with his. report. Surfing actually, I'm going to go back to my hotel room and design an winning. Come on guys. Let's go win grammys for non musical things. They shouted as they read out the door. I'll grab my colored pencils. deadman's curve was covered by blink one, eighty, two on the soundtrack to the nineteen ninety, nine, CBS TV movie shake rattle and roll in American love story. I didn't like any of that sentence you just said. No Sir don't like it. No. Full full stop rejecting. it was also covered by the carpenters on their nineteen seventy-three album called now, and then as part of the yesterday, once more medley, which was the entire second side of the record. And if you think that it was Karen, carpenter singing that version. It wasn't no knows Richard Carpenter. Carpenter I just wanted to say I listened to the carpenters version and Richard Carpenter. He's. He's lovely. But when you see deadman's curve is being covered by the carpenters, I can't tell you how excited I was to hear. Karen Carpenter, saying about her stingray and then she. And I was well, she sings on the set she. It's not the same well, no, it's not A. Very. Cool on that course. I. Know I'm not saying they're not. What I'm saying is I was excited to seek your Karen Carpenter drag race. A jag off of a cliff. And it didn't happen. It was Richard. I'm sorry it's Ok move on but her Johnny Angel and end of the world great yeah. So deadman's curve was inducted into the Grammy Hall of fame in two thousand eight. wiped. Pollution Album win. Could they say? I will say this is actually pretty cool. Album cover but the one with the with the chicken with the Gasman yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. That's pretty cool. See You know the Albuquerque? I looked it up. I didn't know it anyway going anyway. So, deadman's curve was inducted into the Grammy Hall of fame in two thousand eight. And according to the grammy fame, it was established by the Recording Academy's National Trustees in nineteen seventy three to honor recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least twenty five years old. The song is a big deal and well while Jan and Dean don't have the same legacy necessarily as the beach boys. They're still respect for their contribution to surf music and for their music production. Jan Unfortunately passed away on March twenty, six, two, thousand four just before his sixty third birthday. Dean spoke to rolling stone at the time and when they asked him how Jan should be remembered. He said. Get out a copy of drag city. You hear the humor people laughing and you get the hits you can tell these two guys are having one hell of a time making records that made them chuckle pressure as friends you know in some ways I think that probably the best setup because they were not they had other things going on besides music. Right. Yeah. They were. They didn't quite feel like basically the whole music rare. gravy. Get back. In Designing albums. So it's just kind of. was going to medical and stuff. Jan going to Medical School for crying out loud were they had what's interesting heads on their shoulders? They had this horrible tragedy in the height of their fame and that could have been the end of their musical career and there was a renewed interest and they went out toward again and. You know they. They were still a big deal. Yeah and they brought back their music career is it's pretty great. Go. Some. I'll right. Let's take another quick break. The dancing was just a few times a month at a local bar and no experience was necessary. Say didn't didn't have to be like a professional dancer news of a good vibe yeah he was in shape and he just had stripped out new g. straight in kind gyrate around in women would give dollar bills so it was pretty good money compared to what he was making it most of his other jobs in ninety two buzz had been dancing ladies eighties night on a semi regular basis and then one night can cartner came into the bar she was with a group of girlfriends and buzzsaw her and they made eye contact so when he was finished dancing the night he approached cam and started chatting with her. He was instantly really taken with her which surprised people because she wasn't like other girls that he dated as this good looking guy china dancer had plenty of opportunities to hook up with a lot of attractive women but kim seem special to him and kim in her two year old daughter rebecca. We're living with kim's peres since the richard carpenter had this time when she met buzz and so when she is growing up him doing fewer especial and some people would later compare her childhood to the fairytale cinderella her big sister beth was the daughter could do no wrong and kim seeing credit doing anything anything right kim's none. "Of their artists and Representative from the artists lawyers for the artists with the LA times, reported the other day that, that there's the possibility that lawsuits are pending not class action lawsuits, but individual lawsuits, what, there are rumored from a number of different artists. So this, the, the kind of fall out his we're just starting to see it now. But the answer is, I don't think many new some new I in a Cup. In, in the piece, I mentioned, for instance, Richard carpenter who is one half of the duo the carpenters, the seventies kit, making croup Richard and his sister, Karen carpenter. Of course they were cute nineteen seventies, he knew. And in fact, in an interview, the few years back said oh, yeah. Are multi-track burned up at the on in the fire on the universal backlot? There are other surely who knew. All this will emerge but I think the vast vast majority of artists did not. That's my suspicion and suspicion. And, and I think it's probably likely that artists estates didn't know either. And of course, so much of this material is material. That was recorded by now. Dead greats legendary figures whose estates are the ones that have the interest in this material. My guest is Jody Rosen. We're talking about his piece the day, the music burned. So in the peace, and I think this is a question. A lot of people rally having is why weren't these masters stored more properly in a better way. Are we just generally as a society, not taking care not preserving anything, you know, sort of pre-digital world? Short answer. Yes, we're not. Look, the one of the things I detail on this piece, I try and provide a context for this, this isn't a singular event. It's, it's the most dramatic event like this in the history of the record business. It's, it's the worst disaster in the music fitness, as you said in your intro. It's not the only such event. In fact, there's a more than century long event of record companies kind of chucking these things out in various ways, and putting them in landfills throwing them in dumpsters sawing up multi-track real. So they could donate the, the actual medal real to, to, to scrap metal drives during World War Two. Lots of those were metal parts masters. Gotta gotta be on my facts here, but there's scrap metal dealers got the reels, a little bit later on. But there's a whole history of people recording over extra tracks by the likes of Elvis, Presley ROY orbison and Patsy Kline. I remember the day that, that when MTV realized that what they had, and they had to start taking care of their tapes. It's like swirl like prince, you know, his first according and at some point, I remember there was a huge push to archive everything because people realize, oh my gosh. We have Madonna's first appearance, and at the time, you know, people were just doing their job, you know. So it wasn't a silly Amal militia thing. That's no, that's there's I mean, a, there's a long history of this stuff being just kind of thrown on a shelf somewhere. It's very haphazard system. Okay. There's not like there hasn't been a whole lot of great libraries science practice in music, vaults over the years. Also the way these things work is often like a band. Go record something. They'll have. Tape, they try the after the doing their Cording to come back to the vault just sit around the studio does get let their does, does the studio Venturi shut down. And then they put a whole bunch of tapes just out dumpster heard lots of stories of that with, with recording artists involved, who like the biggest names have ever recorded. So, like there's, there's a lot of crazy stories, one other kind of context for this, that I think, is important to recognize. And this is something I didn't manage to shoehorned into the piece. But, you know, it's, it's only relatively recent historically recently historically, that we've come to view, especially popular music as something of the has any cultural value. This stuff was regarded as dross, you know, it was like, candy, the candy. Only matter insofar as it could be monetize the only could be monetize, if it was a hit like this week. There was no sense that the that even stuff by people we now revere as the maybe the greatest artists in any medium in the history of the United States, takes them on the Louis Armstrong, Duke, Ellington, whatever James Brown Aretha Franklin. What, what have, you know, accident, by the way, that a lot of that a lot of the music by African Americans and other reason for its cultural devaluation for decades in any case. So that's another reason why there wasn't some idea that we need. This wasn't the first folio Shakespeare's first folio, we're like the Berg, you know, like we needed there was no sense. We need to keep this stuff around that is only slowly dawned on people. And now we're in a situation where, of course, all this stuff is controlled by these giant mega corporations, who think about it in terms of how it can be exploited not necessarily think of it as a cultural patrimony that needs to be protected. No matter. What France you go? What have you heard? As a result of your reporting. That makes you glad you wrote the story. Look, I mean it's terrible event. Honestly, it was it was like, in many ways to depressing story to report, I'm glad that there's. I'm glad that people found out about it because I think that there will be I hope there'll be some changes. I'm frankly, I've been surprised by the how overwhelming and the response has been, I didn't know if this if people would be like if there's the great big shrug emoji, you know what I'm saying? But, like people really seem to care and at and care, even though a master recording is something that's kind of hard to wrap your head around. So I'm hoping that there will that the record companies will take a good longer harder. Look at their archiving and preservation practices. There's other are good professionals who work at all these really care about this stuff. But the question is, whether the bean counters at the top of the company will allow say, hey, we can't afford to have one of these terrible public relations disasters. So maybe we're moving onto a new era here. Let's hope universal group responded to your report, Dave respondent. They've put out a couple of statements in which they say that there's many inaccuracies in the in the reporting that they're finding lots of this material. They haven't been specific about any inaccuracies. So I think everyone should take that with grain of salt. And they point to the fact that they've continued to release lots of old material over the in the in the period, since the fire, but they don't say that they're releasing that stuff from the original master. So there's a lot of a lot of illusions in their statement. We'll see we'll see where we get all that careful reading comprehension, when, when you read the statements, my guest has been Jody Rosen, news piece is the day. The music bird. It was in the New York Times magazine. Hey Jodi, thanks for sharing your reporting. Thank you so much, man, commit next. It's time for our weekly good vibes segment, this some someone who is good.
