"I feel like from his perspective, it would the worst case scenario would be to announce he's playing and then by Wednesday be like, yo, I just shot like 48 on the front, like I can't do it, right? So he can kind of come in this way, not having put a ton of pressure on himself to do it. Feel his way out and assuming all is good to go. He's going to do it. But he could get up there and be like, because right before, but it's also not like he's going to another planet. Like golf is golf on some level to where it's like he's not going to show up to be like 32 or 62 on the front 9. You know what I mean? Before Safeway back in 2016, whatever it was, he was getting ready to go. Like he was he was played 9 holes before getting ready to go play it. And he lost 6 or 7 balls in shot like 48 and withdrew from the tournament. So I think that's just kind of like, all right, I hit some balls of metals, but like I'm going to go hit some at Augusta and feel like can I hold the back right shelf on 6? Can I fly at the right number on 12? Can you start feeling your way around that? If you can kind of, I think he's kind of counting on getting back there. If this was like Brookline, there'd be no chance he'd be playing right now, I don't think if it was southern hills, don't think he'd be doing it, but look, I know this place. I know all the places I can miss it. I know where to hit it. I know how to do these shots. I've won this tournament 5 times. I might just give this a shot. I'm not taking up anybody else's spot. I can go all the way up to Wednesday and it doesn't really affect anything. That would be a sick take, though. If somebody was calling out Tiger for taking up a spot. I would be here. I was gonna say, it's pretty unfair to the first alternate. Richard bland. What if he's honing a par three trophy? Competition yet. I think he's not playing the part three. I think that's, I think he already announced that. I got to imagine he's not taken literally any more steps than he has to take. I think the weather forecast for Tuesday probably bumped him up, getting there a day earlier. It looks like Wednesday could rain some too. It looks just like some iffy conditions in general in the early part. It looks like it could be a cool masters a little bit on Friday Saturday. Sure, of course, subject to change. But again, maybe I'm caught up too much in the hype train, but I've made the promise to myself I'm not going to doubt him again. I'm not going to do it. I'm not going to say, he's going to go mess the cut. I'm not going to do it ever again. 2019 changed that forever. If he does tee it up based on all accounts, there was an Evan priest tweeted that he hit every shot perfect on the range today. Fuck it, I'm in. I'll follow that. I don't care. I'm looking for a semblance of things. We'll do the fucking I'm in also on speed later. I'm tempted you with a heads up Spieth versus yeah, we're getting Tiger bet right now. At all Tiger bets should be off the board. We don't know what's gonna happen, but truly anything is possible. How did he get it? I had clean solly out right now with a Spieth and Tiger versus the field, but. It's been a great year, pics for you at this point. So at Mel's 19 two 30 said, how does he actually do? What are his expectations? Who does this benefit? Guys under the radar now Rory JT, does it change anything related to that? I don't think so. I don't think so either. You know, it's going to attract some attention for sure, but I don't think, I don't feel like anyone's really coming in with a huge target on their back this year more so than other years. But very, very open, which if it does, it feels like we obviously say that more and more as kind of the top player in the world mantle kind of gets passed around. But I don't know, I hope I'm preaching moderate takes, which is always good business. Yeah, that's a very bad business, but I think that, you know, hopefully we've moved past the idea of like, if he does go out and shoot 45 on the front 9, I hope people are just like, ah, you know what, man. Who cares? Yeah. Who cares? He's out there. He's having fun. Again, ever since he said that in his own press conference, whatever that was a couple years ago, like a hero, I think. We were saying, anything else in my career is like gravy to this point is kind of like, yeah, that's how I've been handling a lot of this stuff too. And that's where I'm kind of like, I'm not my massive Tiger fanboy days are behind me. I'm very happy to say that. I feel very confident about that. And it is truly like, if he plays, hell yeah, would love to watch. And if he doesn't, don't care, wasn't planning on it. I was excited about either. Plenty of other stuff to watch too. So it's all all upside. I don't buy that he'd be distracting or, you know, there's other great storylines going now. This is a fucking huge deal. If Tiger plays in this, this is, I mean, again, this wasn't even on my radar as of two weeks ago, because I was like, no, he's not going to walk a gust after almost losing his leg. Are you serious? Maybe we get the old course and now here we are. I'm stunned, so. Anything more to add big guy, you ready? You ready to move on from this one? No, people don't want my services. What about I'm wearing foot joys today? Anything on that? That's wild. I'm amazed how much people care about this or how fast that was noticed, I guess, but I'm guessing it has something to do with the leg, but I'm sure I'll be asked about that too. I think gear Twitter plus Tiger Twitter plus sneaker Twitter is that's a potent brew that we're really mixing up there. So mixing makes and gymnastics Twitter somehow and we got ourselves a stew. That's why I couldn't believe it when Randy set that over immediately. Did you guys see where foot joys? Oh my God. I can't believe this changes to everything for me. You know what I will say, rainy, and don't roll your eyes or if you do turn your camera off so I can't see you. I'm unsubscribed again from all the Charlie takes, but the idea of getting after seeing those two at the father son together. The idea of.

"Happened just exited acknowledging them properly on saturday. Sorry say that one more time. It's all i dropped out. I don't know what happened there. I was checking out. Texan scotty booking man day man. I think calling certainly made up for for the lack of respect that he showed to the calorie on saturday afternoon. All five here one more time than that. These are the best fans most knowledgeable fans you know. They beat that to death. I wanna give a shout to that guy whose pants were falling down with. No shirt Every time they say that sunbird guy that that was a great look. You could always count on a shirtless guy. You always can. It's the best that might be legitimately on them. My favorite take the week. Was your report. The british radio at how they're dogging morikawa for not being gracious on the eighteenth yesterday which obviously did look like somebody sets you gotta salute to crowd or the stabber gonna love you. They were they were they. Were lapping it. Up from louis like you know. He's such an experienced player. He knows how much mass to these people that have been standing out here all day. On this whole. It's like randy the other day when the torture franz rolled into the finish one of the stages dude won by like fifteen minutes. And everybody's still hung around and those same same yawn that broadcasts. They're like man like he's really just giving he so gracious to this audience. That de hung around even though the leader came through fifteen minutes ago. Kind of thing you know. It's it shows a certain certain level of of decorum. I think i i will say. The crowd seemed very pro. Louis as well a lot of like the post. shall i come on. come all that. They felt like they were. There's some Maybe it was a conscious thing from work. Our you know wasn't appreciative of the crowds area. So rainy guess. What zander shot today Sixty eight sixty five really. Yeah finished minus three for the tournament. Come guys wanna shout out Kevin stroman inquiry. Connors showed out in the in the majors this year. In a in a big way i'd say stream in probably more than conner's but very quietly just what did stream and finish Nineteen thousand nine hundred and another top twenty That was a very random. I don't think many people pick that going into major season. But he he seemed to show up like at least three four Didn't mentioned that. I get a bone with matt. He's just not playing well in in the open championship. And i think that's like any said it's kind of in his head. He doesn't like the unpredictability of it. All that for a guy that doesn't he's not a bomber. He's not overpowering golf courses. Like i think a guy like him needs to needs to step up and learn how to play that style golf right. I would think that it would suit as game really well. You know this golf course and being speak light This golf course would suit his game very well but that was that was not the case. It is unfortunate rain. Where you bump to see paul casey. Go seventy seventy on the weekend. I was bummed. I was i was English english often really answered the bell. And that's a shame. Because like i said they are a proud people But man they record of majors muccio mu-chou not good. What else anything else. Shout to Boutros-boutros-ghali matures boutros boutros. This was his first First top thirty in a major with a with a shank big shank. He's been out on tour for out on tour for like twelve thirteen years and this is his first top thirty in a major. Are you going to apologize for no. I think it's a disgrace. I think the fact that he's won that much money and been able to hang around that long without you know while being that mediocre it kind of speaks volumes about the modern game. a little bit I do want to apologize for fleetwood. Thank you I was very very high on fleetwood coming in this week finished minus two for the week. T thirty three Them yeah just not not great Hated seeing that and then Cam smith really faded today to seventy four today cam. But i think you know he just hasn't had the best the best running at the last couple months Then lastly just wanna wanna give a shot onto the bullet of course. Marcus armytage T fifty three plus one just a rock solid week and You know just go take care yourself. Befell go rest. I i laugh alot. Consider like good and not good. It's my favorite. He tied john. Thomas said it was his second major. Ever guys gotta think it was. John thompson i but i could be wrong about that. He won the porsche. European open like seven or eight weeks ago. Finished that you know. He's he's been an absolute heater. He's gotta be exhausted. What the guy. Breathe a little bit randy though shares for sure it'd be richer bland's ass Pity apologize for at your plan randy. Of course. I want apologize for richard bland Tied with ricky too. I got a question. Quick is ricky still one of the best putters in the world or not for sure hundred percent okay. I feel like it's like a once a once. A part in the world kind of thing always the best in the world could appoint right like when they cut to him on a shot they do you know former number one player in the world it should get former number one putter in the world rickie fowler might be one of those situations like when maroon facts in a couple of weeks ago tweeted out that list of his the top ted putters the history of the pga tour but rory they're hard to ours. You bet ridiculous of all time all time. Do we want to wrap with any amsterdam. I'm worn out too many man- too much pressure. Not enough low shots too many commercials. But i don't know it's that they also had playing through. Yeah the playing through on this sixty nine hole. Golf tournament You know cutting away from louis shots at the very end. Sixty four on the golf course. It's just it's just such a middle thing. I mean we've address this a million times but like the level which they're willing to fuck with you it. It's it knows no bounds. It knows no limits. Nothing is off limits. I tried to throw up like alarm bells when they didn't show paul. Casey had the chance to time or pj. When they didn't show that live on the seventy second hole major the only guy that could possibly affect the outcome of this event that they didn't show that live and nobody really even seemed to care or notice. Just like all right. Well i guess we're just to sit here and this is what's gonna look like fraternity so the I think The fact that they sent no ta as one of their encore six people that they sent the fact that they sent not just that speaks volumes for me. I i will say though. Sky was not didn't didn't blow away. it wasn't like a unbelievable more volume shots shown there than than than it was. It was finds good. I enjoy the commentary. I enjoy the pace a lot better than than a lot of the things you hear. Laura davies used issues me dame laura davies is awesome to listen to and whatnot but It it it didn't necessarily.

"CBS Sports Radio. Fred did you play back in await at Torrey Pines? Ah, no, no, I did not. You play that golf course, though, right? Oh, man, that course me for lunch. Uh, it was really hard. They had old like Remember number 12. It was, uh, What is that thing about 495 100 yards is usually straight into the wind cause you're heading straight to the hang gliders all the paras sailors, So that's why, uh, They're up there because there's there's some wind blowing in off the water, and I remember my caddy going, Uh, good news. Bad news. Um, What's that? He said, Well, you hit the fairly nice drive, but Head up there about 30 yards. That's 2 35 to the front. I went. Oh, my God. Oh, um yeah, It's really is our golf course when they just played a normal Tory pliant San Diego tournament And then when the USDA gets in there, they Oh, the rough up eating even higher and try to firm everything up the weather allowing which I think is happening this week, so It usually identifies the guy that's really hitting them all the best. Uh so. That's that's a good thing. Now does the best mean the hardest? The farthest Uh, yeah. No. You mean the player wife? Yes, I'm saying I'm saying this does Torrey Pines accommodate the huge big bomber. Big hitter, Fred. Is it? Of course for those guys. Well, it's become that way because it is really long sea level with 7 800 yards, so It can play really long, especially when that, uh Marine layer comes in and the ball is not going anywhere so Yes, it's a really long golf course. There's just Uh, Four or five holes that you've just got to get by trying to get by with no worse than a bogey. And if you can get part, like on number, the one right out of the gate is really hard and then four. They turned six from afar. Five too far four. So that's really hard. And, uh, number five. No slouch, and then you get to the back nine. And you have Number 11 2, Part three number 12 really tough part four and 14 15 16 2 part Three. And, uh, you know, you got to hit a good tee shot on 17. And if you do, you can set it up for birdie and then 18. It's uh, risk reward hole. When you saw Richard Bland tied for the lead after 36 holes, did you have to do what I did? Fred? And that's do a Google search to find out who this guy is. What is all about? He just only reason I've known him and a little bit from the European tour and a couple times I've been over there. I've met him, but When he won a few weeks ago for the first time. That was amazing, and it was such a heartfelt win, and then You see him on the top of the leaderboard over here now, That was a shocker. Yeah. What kind of golfer is he? Fred? What's his style of play? Uh, he just He's one of those guys who keeps the ball right in front of him. He has a lot of control with the golf ball as far as hitting a lot of fairways and not hitting big misses. So, uh ah. The good and the bad with that is that he can probably hit a lot of fairways, which he should But when he misses him, he kind of misses the way I did, which is barely in it, And then that's the thickest part. So if he's driving a good he can, and that's what he's doing. I think he had seven birdie's yesterday. He did. Uh, that's a lot of birdies. I don't care whether you're playing a little but but that's a lot of birdies. Russell Henley just bogey, too, So he's back to five. Underwood Bland. They still share the lead here were in the early goings of the third round at the US Open. For most of the guys who are near the top of the leaderboard. We're talking about it with a very accomplished golfer, Fred funkier. On CBS sports Radio. Uh, As an entry point into a conversation about a couple of these golfers, Fred, I'll get your thoughts because I haven't heard them yet. Your take on this whole, the Shambo Capital rivalry that we've watched bloom in the last few weeks. Yeah, it's uh, it Blooming is a really good work for it because I think it's blossom. Yeah, it's a full flower right now. Uh, I think that Have to definitely relishes this thing, he says. It's really good for golf and really good for the social media and have some interest between the two. I think he just got really irritated when, uh Shambo when he was doing that interview, and the showboat was being really loud. Close by and he was irritated with that. And he was wondering, you know, why are you doing this to me? And and I think there's just some of the other things that the quirkiness, D shambo and all the attention attention. He's getting Were kept to just kind of lets his club's booth talking. He doesn't break deal with the media very much, and you can tell when the kids the interviews. It's pretty dry and Monaco own and just kind of Says what he says and like, all right, this is obligation. I'm going to get out of here Where the shambo give you a full Uh, full boat of us everything you want, You know he's got the Six course meal when, uh, he's describing his golf game, So he's a fun interview. I'm sure that Little irritating for kept a and and he's letting it go, and and now everybody wants this. Caring and nothing's going to happen and repairing. They're going to shake hands on the first see, and they're not going to talk to each other arrested today. It's not like they're going to get in a fight or anything. So yeah. It won't be in its fight. Yeah, they're both big guys would definitely be a heavyweight one. For sure. With all the muscle the shambo is put on. Is that commonplace? Spread that in a tournament like this. You get out there and you shake hands, and then you mostly interact with your caddy, and that's it or or do you even in a very competitive environment like this? Typically talk to your playing partner? Well, I'm one that really congratulates and and gives a guy that Has a high five when he does something good and good shot and great pot right up and down, So I'm very encouraging playmates. Not necessarily. I'll engage in conversation unless he wants to. Yeah, and and I'll do that. But I kind of honor my playing partners. Whatever he wants to do if he's a talker that I'm certainly willing to talk. If I'm playing well, if I'm not playing well, then I gotta I clam up. I don't have much, So I'm kind of one of those Fairweather. Uh, my personality. Is based on how I'm playing. Yes, in competitive place, and I just try to stay out of the guys play if I'm not playing well..

"I'm watching the U. S Open. I'm looking at the leaderboard. Those guys are about a half hour or so from teeing off. Couple of no names. Russell Henley. Richard Bland lead right now five under Jon Rahm is only two strokes back. Same goes for Bubba Watson. Bryson, D Shambo, Brooks Cap CA Justin Thomas, Colin Mark Colin Mark Colin Morikawa, some big names in golf. All started the day five strokes back at even par. They're all in the course now, and a few of them are making up some ground. No better person to talk to you about that, that my next guest From making birdies podcast. He is synonymous with the game of golf. He's good at it himself. He's even better at covering it, and he's back on the Pony Express. I'm talking about Ryan Burke. Ryan, What do you think of Torrey Pines kind of a poor man's Pebble Beach. Yeah, No, not at all. Actually, it's uh Is it better? It's it? No, no, it's not even in the conversation. I mean, they are. They couldn't be more different. They couldn't They both have a view of the ocean. That's that's about where the similarities end. But when I think of golf courses in southern California, I think Pebble Beach. I don't really think Torrey Pines, you know, no Torrey Pines. Isn't that great? To be honest with you? I mean, it's got great views. The ocean in the cliffs. But from a golf course standpoint, it is. It is really one of the worst golf courses that a U. S open is played on its I mean, they've got a tour, then every year, that's about what they are. They are so why do they play the U. S open there then? I mean, if they're playing the farmers there already. Why do we got to have a second event there every few years? That's a great question. Um, I'd like him to take it off the rotation. To be honest with you. It it from from a not to bore you with with Architecture, but it doesn't stand up with With the best courses in the in the U. S. The Wing puts the Oakmont the pebble beaches. I mean, you could you could run Probably four or 56 golf courses on the U. S open and Pebble would be one. But certainly, uh Tory would not be. It's you know, they've got it muscled up this week with the raft and and but at the end of the day, it's it's from a It's pretty basic. It just doesn't have a lot to it as far as as far as, uh, architecture. Capt. Cook. It's got great views. Capta Thomas and Shambo Olive early birdies here, so they're now under par. They're all three are one under Ryan. You still believe all three of them still very much. In this tournament can still all win it. Those three guys. Yeah, I think this was a very easy US open to predict. And at making birdies we've predicted it about as well as you could. You guys had bland through 36 holes. Now already. Richard landed Now Listen, Listen, you had me on and I told you Phil Mickelson when hold on the weekend, either. Now there is a gigantic Difference of pedigree between Richard Glenn and Phil Mickelson, who, of course, won the PGA Championship. They'll Mexicans on the top 10 greatest players of all time. Uh, Richard Bland. Probably not the best golfer in his own family. I mean, it is, uh Will. You can run this one back. He has 0.0 chance of winning this U S open. How about Henley? 0.0? I Henry could win Henley's a Henley super duper streaky with the putter like crazy streaky, and when he put He has proven before to be one of the best players in the world. Now it's not real consistent meaning? He doesn't have it week to week. He misses a lot of cuts on the PGA Tour. Uh, but he wins on the PGA Tour. I mean, Russell Henley is a legit Legit threat. That putter has to stay hot. I still think, though, that he doesn't have the firepower that ultimately separates and wins this U S Open. I still This is one of the very few instances where you could give me five guys that had it longer than everyone else. And I'd give you the field because I think when it's all said and done, the Shambo kept even Dustin Johnson, Rory Rahm, You know the guys that this is a golf course because I said, with the architecture without trees without doglegs, without a lot of different things that brings other types of players into If the mix like you can this thing I guess there's a heavy rough, but we've now learned that if you just headed further than everyone else It's the benefit of that on a golf course that doesn't put you in the trees or put you in spots where you're going to make double that the longest hitters We saw that wing foot. Last year. Two Shambo just He just said. I'm going to hit driver on every hole. I'm going to hit. It is absolutely far as I can, which is a lot of times 50 60 yards further than the other long hitters on on tour. And no matter where it ends up, I'm going to have a sandwich in even if it's out of the rough. I still I'm still going to get a sandwich on the green and then on the holes where I don't put it in the rough. I'm going to, you know, make birdie on all the par five. So I I think distance is gigantic the next two days. This golf course more than some is so power prejudice. Those that have power are making tappin birdies on the par fives. Those that don't have power are scratching for birdies anywhere they can get them and the over four days Kept has so many of those one handed tappin birdies on par fives and will probably make an eagle before. It's all said and done, And on a course where you're going to look at 67 under eight under winning They those tappin birdies where he gets a stroke and very few others in the field. Do those add up, and by Sunday, those are going to be the guys that have a chance to win. 121st United States Open Ryan Burr making birdies podcast. It's spelled differently. Birdies right, tell our audience again. How you spell that one. Run. Yeah, you gotta pony bur r d I s It's yes. Bur r d I yes. We've been red hot. I'll tell you my pick of the week. This is insanity. But pick of the week was Patrick Rogers to top 20 and Patrick Rodgers was one under. He's got the leaf. You want? Not only if you want under. He went off of the week at like 600 to 1. Uh, holy cow. We had a feeling we had a feeling about Rogers this week, and he's got a long way to go before I cash that ticket, but Uh, you know, that's the kind of stuff you get on Wednesdays, making birdies. Jeez..
