"That's where atlanta's Best to have them for the past six or seven years now But yeah but the connection with the enemy was drafted out of purdue so he played his first two years out of purdue recruited when luna room. Oh was still the defensive backs. Secondary coach for purdue before in a remote left that position for the miami dolphins in twenty twelve. So obviously this familiarity with with alan back to high school and then is early college days and in college he was more and more or less all purpose defensive back it wasn't specifically a safe year. Cornerback use the guy that that kind of play wherever he needed to. Because you know it's it's collagen if you're the impact your you just play wherever you need to Think he finished his purdue career at cornerback. So like that. that's an angle right. You have that versatility from back in the day where he played under a guy. So you know like the same verbiage in the communication stuff. So that's an angle with animal as well and i think in terms of what it means for the bengals. I guess like for one. The the back of to jessie bates have free safety. Probably on the roster right now like brennan. Wilson is a canopy resigned. But he's not really free. Ease a guy that has played mostly in the box or maybe in the slot and the only guy. That's the that was on the roster last year trayvon henderson. If you guys don't remember who that is. I don't really hasn't really played at. Also they don't really have a lotta def behind their best player on defense and ricardo allen. Who's going to be like thirty in december who's coming off of. I think the biggest contract year which is why he was released. By the falcons. It makes sense to bring him in as as a depth option. There that has familiarity in on what interim would probably ask them to do and he knows that he has the capability to lineup On different places in the secondary. So if that's the case that that's what this is just a guy that fills out the roster fills out what could be the fifty three man roster as the guy who can backup free safety. Maybe played cornerback in a pinch. That's fine if that's all is but you know. I i think that's. We should just call expectations. Two right now. Not i guess. Think of it as something bigger than what it probably is. Yeah in seven years. Eleven interceptions over seventy seven games. He's had a couple of injury issues. Not overly big five nine one eighty six. Especially if you're kind of playing playing safety. But i guess john might thing with it is if this is a depth signing if this is a rotational guy a guy that you can get on a a manageable contract and you can kind of move them around to different places on the defense kind of like what we had thought. Maybe it was going to happen with some of the safeties last year. When you got that trio of sean williams von bell and jessie bates you thought there'd be more movement around with those guys. Maybe that's the plan here with with allen. If that's the case i'm i'm fine with it. Especially if the if the bengals ended up bringing back a brandon wilson for the kick return duties and whatnot. I'm fine with that. If it's more for a replacement for mackenzie alexander as a slot corner on easy with that. Wouldn't really make a lot of sense like to go from. Douglas denard to mackenzie alexander to them. Ricardo allen like a three year span. That's just like a clear like downward progression terms of effectiveness in that spot. Like i i think back to last year you know. The bengals made like to trade signings. One of them was like leshan. Sins who. I think. I think it. Ricardo allen is the leshan sims of their free agency class for this year. I think i think you're okay with that because shawn's just a backup special. Teamer a cornerback. That wasn't counted on to play a lot at least going into the season with unfortunately had to play a lot. He got exposed because of that. I think you're more confident in ricardo. Alan bean a spot starter out of place where he is. Competent has shown to be competent in his six or seven years in the nfl. But you're right if if they ask him to be a starter in a position that he hasn't played since college really. They're just kind of outbidding themselves. I guess no one is really expecting regard wound Completely transformers career. When he's about to turn thirty so that's the thing you're right. It's not a good one. But i think we could see if we have to see. This actually happens like the actually joins the team and we'll obviously get a sense of what they're expecting out of him Once we see the contract details if that ever happens and the the other facet to it. I wish we had a conversation about this with andrei pirata when he was on the show recently but The a compensatory pick thing you know the fact that these players are released their released by a team and not just hitting a free market and signing somewhere on their own volition type of thing you know. I mean everybody signs Somewhere on their own volition when they sign a contract. When i'm saying is when you're when you're released out of a contract rather than hitting free agency on your own that doesn't affect a compensatory pick formula which you know. That's the bengals love those compensatory picks and i think also the fact that they invested heavily in free agency last year outside free agency. They wanna be balanced scales at least a little bit in it. Sounds like john I guess transitioning a little bit out of the ricardo allen conversation. Sounds like it's gonna be a little bit of a bloodbath in terms of nfl veterans getting released to to you know preface free agency. It just seems like there's gonna be a lot of big names out there. I think what was gave. Jackson was released. you're just trying to offload some of these these contracts at their that. They paid a lot of money to are a lot of money to the bengals could reap benefits there. Yeah and i think regards compensatory pig conversation like if the bengals are worried about compensatory picks the probably means. They're not going to sign deals. That would offset them from getting that because they obviously didn't care about it last year when they signed and trae wayne's to those large deals and they didn't really have anybody of notoriety. Leave the team for big deal. So they weren't really guinea anything back in return So i think in regards to the interest in st free agents. it's more about just potentially getting value for guys in valley for for known commodities. Or as if you know if you sign unrestricted free agents typically. You're getting guys. They're trying to maximize their value may beginning into their first their first non rookie or i veteran contract. Excuse me and they're trying to maximize their monetary value. Really getting the max value..

"Be the Falcons on the nation podcast. I'm David Walker on joined by my partner in. Crime. Burchfield Evan how are you? Do Well David We're well rested after a long night watching the Falcons up till. Hours. So yeah. Let's talk about this game. Yeah. Let's do it and as usual here to recap the falcons unfortunate loss to the packers in week four of the twenty twenty NFL season obviously coming into this game Green Bay was three. Oh. The Falcons were owned three. I. Think there are a lot of Falcon Spans and myself included that felt like this was one of those Games Falcons could surprisingly win sort of like the San Francisco game last year towards the end of the season where all of a sudden everything hits. Julio. Jones goes off camera goes off Yet. Things stay pretty much to script based on who these two teams are so far in twenty twenty Green Bay won this game obviously thirty, two sixteen and that that score to score win doesn't even feel like it accurately. Portrays what happened in this game? There was just a lot to digest but before we get into the game specifics, I do WanNa go through as we did last time the injury situation for the Falcons this has been a really really rough season for injuries. In the NFL you many people are speculating the lack of a true preseason the lack of off season activities to get players back into health has been at the core of this, and maybe that's true I don't know if the injuries are any more or less severe than previous years but the Falcons have certainly been by injuries in the first quarter of the season. during the game we had three guys that went out. I'll start with. The least severe, which is a horrible way to put this. Jalen Hawkins who has are believed fifth realm fifth or sixth round pick this year the safety who is playing in the game begin in place of John. Neal. In actually a given up against your opinion on this he was playing playing actually pretty well, pretty surprising for first year rookie. He went out unfortunately with a concussion later in the game Julio Jones who came into the game? He was listen questionable he did end up starting. But he left at halftime he did not come out of the locker room after the first half with the apparently a reactivation of that hamstring injury. And then the most severe of these was unfortunately safety the Monte. Casey and the team did confirm he did tear his Achilles Tendon. which is. A devastating injury for those of you who WanNa know a little bit more about it. I actually wrote an article this weekend. At the alcoholic dot com about the fact in this article was talking about the other two safeties who missed this game Ricardo Allen in Kia Neil both of whom suffered Achilles injuries and it talks about the fact that almost all NFL players suffered this injury, see a drastic decline than performance going forward, and now we have literally our third starting safety. now have Achilles Injuries Z unfortunately is in a contract year a devastating injury. So Evan was your take on these three guys Jalen Hawkins Julio. Keynesian and what their injuries mean for long-term. Yeah Hawkins, definitely stepped up being able to play more last night in look great until you know the concussion happened in on TV you can see they showed a shot of him when he was walk into the locker room and he just kinda looked you know off balance and stuff. So I feel for him and you know concussions or one of those things where you can't really put a timeline on it it could be like, oh, he's fine by next week as we kind of saw with Russell gauge or it could be, oh, it's something that lingers on for three weeks or whatever. So obviously, that's kind of scary but we wish the best for him Kaleo Jones. Shout to Julia Jones, he wrote the front franchise record with the Roddy White who had it for eight hundred, eight receptions franchise record in Julio Jones broke it last night in Yeah he unfortunately. I'm not sure when it happened but because it was kind of a surprise for everybody. He just never left the locker room at halftime I don't remember seeing him come out on like come out to the sidelines either so. we'll learn more about that throughout the week because he as you mentioned, he was questionable going into the game. In Yeah Casey I mean that was it was tough because you saw it. If he didn't see the video it was a non contact. He was just kind of covering a dude in instantly. You see the second happen instantly just reaches down above his ankle and yeah, you know anytime you see to play football you have to be pretty damned health into see a ballplayers cry like you. You know it's it's a tough thing. See 'cause you know they're in paying either that or they also know, Oh, I won't be ruled played football this season you know. Yeah it's just tough to see especially somebody. So Young going through that injury. Jim mentioned where hit pretty hard to save the injury bug specially safety where Ricardo. Allen Kiana Neil just haven't been playing Now Casey Out Jamal Carter was back there playing shrodnr eastman cut some playing time Once Hawkins left obviously. yeah I mean the secondary continues to take hits I mean Aj Tyrrell's on the Kovic still So He's missed two games because. who knows with that sort of thing when he when he's actually gonNA come off hopefully for next week 'cause I mean we can use all the help we can get. Exactly. At this point. Fully understand the Falcons fans start clamoring for the team to sign Earl Thomas who is amazingly still not on an NFL roster right now. I don't think that's going to happen I think the ownership, the GM the head coach No. That Owen four there's I think one team in NFL history that's ever started. Open Forum made the playoffs like we are already just four games and it's it. This season is essentially over barring a miraculous turnaround i. just don't know that you can facilitate a miraculous turnaround for a team that is this banged up in the defense in the secondary where literally you have backups at multiple positions in the in the entire secondary. What's interesting is anytime somebody's looking good. They get injured right away Hawkins. Our Quiz Denard looked tremendous. He was off you know arguably our best secondary INSA bears in. You know now he's on I r I think it's just short term my are so he should be back. You know sooner rather than later by. You know when your own four every game matter so. You might not matter when he comes back. Yeah. Exactly. It's that point you know with the next game being home against Carolina the question becomes does Ricardo Alan get back does Kiana Neil get back and you know even if they do one of the arguments made in the article is neither guy has actually been playing particularly..

"Was down by nineteen at one point down by sixteen narrowed had to leak it. You imagine if the game was back and forth. Aaron Mater through through for six hundred. Can you imagine what Atlanta would have been? If they had their starting safeties, Ricardo Alan, Kiana Neil they're both gone AJ Terrell starting corner is gone then that Casey Kid got carted off with an Achilles. Injury last night God bless him knocking on wood for him and I go jalen Hawkins the backup to the backup safety was in got concussed or something I don't know they either while into the locker room. This horrendous I, I have no idea who finished the game in the secondary for the. Falcons. So that's why we saw that play the fourth and to play where everybody is open. It is shooting fish in a barrel for Aaron. Rodgers. Up in Green Bay it's like, do you WanNa hit him or him? What do you want to do and look what he did he threw eight balls to his backup running back Jamaal Williams and he caught all eight of them eight through eighty. Six balls to Tanya. In his becoming a pretty good day it tied in i. kind of liked the way moves and he's playing with a lot of confidence. He's kittles best buddy off season workout warrior and he caught all six of his balls and then my little man Jones he caught all five of his balls for what what what? What This Aaron Jones led team. There's always been aaraj the no it's last year's MVP was the other areas of all gives the only person that refuses that says that and believed that their quarterback is not the most valuable. Are you in? Jerry? Because everybody else will pay their Jerry won't pay here's. A running back fifteen million. Is Not. The League is not the office shoot run through up should run through day and you said back deserves forty plus million dollars he could be Owen four right Right and I want to remind everybody that last year Aaron Rodgers started hot and then he just really faded and he pro football focus at the end of the year ranked him the ninth best quarterback but also had him from week eight onwards they ranked him seventeenth. So the season is just getting started here and last year he finished his worst qbr of his career which ranked eighteenth in the League, and he finished with a completion percentage of only sixty two percent which ranked twenty first. Gibson you talk about a cooling into season if I'm not mistaken, the Patriots started off eight note if somehow finished, we were talking about Aaron, Rodgers and the packers because you and others have said his demise. Well. His his. His team screamed about his demise because they traded up from thirty in the first round to twenty-six that take Jordan love as a quarterback and I don't think they want to convert him to wide out I. Think actually want him to replace Aaron over matter of fact, I haven't even heard about mentioned. Louis, have you I them into nobody mentioned Jordan who is they took him in obviously they had designs on replacing Aaron of a matter of fact I heard about mention buddy. Lou. From the nutty professor you. Took professor. Skill I mean, the ninety seven Qbr he has a ninety two yard ads team gloat about it. You actually open this show. You had the audacity to gloat about that against a team that you just destroy. How about this here did have a ninety seven qbr against him. Knowing he had a high one with a ninety seven. No, it wasn't. Ok. Through for four, fifty versus three twenty. Five Oh to call air he should be oh inboard. I just said this guy and you said he deserves forty two million dollars my guy. The taste. Defeat, have my guys on the bye week. So they get these guys back. devante back Yep. Now Lavar, had a muscle. Divide. Surgery. So he's probably be out another six week. Air. Battle doesn't matter we five and Demonte Air Ryan. How many guys can say without number one receiver five If you played the Falcons every week from here on I believe you'd win every game no, no, no no. They're not five and. against. The Falcons without Devante. Who ever they played without Devante really. Yes. Well. It seems like we got a long season here and that ahrends recent history over the last four years has been start fast and then fe down the super what we do. We do this, the top two quarterbacks, right nine, the of Seton by any metrics by any any variable, you want to use an Russell Wilson. In their Roger, that's back. Now you looking to talk about all the all the stuff you WANNA. Talk about and Taba obey but all I know if six city baby. City really hello. Yes. I like to have a reservations for six in the end zone. Yes. Tom Be joining me. Tom Will Not be everywhere. He on will not chase down fix it. I'll be I mean. Jack. Rabbit. Got It. Does he know that he's not. To the guy on the other team, he's not supposed to throw it to. Justin. Just thirty just Watson he's an Ivy League what do you expect? So we'll we'll I've got hi- his bowl. The Tom Brady is late a inside on the throat. I run the speed out, put the ball in front of me. You have to go get it how you thought about your DP. DB DB get out of bed pillow and how many. Did he throw against the chargers defense on Sunday coming from behind five count them five tugging SORTA? Runs. To the sideline at the end of the game going row..

"Let's start with the visiting Chicago bears. If you've heard previous updates, you know that the bears are coming into this game Much healthier than the Falcons are and that's putting it lightly the the only player of any significance who has been limited or otherwise missed practice has been linebacker Khalil Mac obviously the best pass rusher for the bears honestly one of the best pass rushers in the league, he was limited all week with a knee injury right now he is listed as questionable for the game on Sunday at this point, I'll be surprised if he doesn't play the. Fact that he's been limited in not completely held out is a strong indication that he should be good to go on Sunday. The only new named showed up on Friday for the bears was defensive end Mario Edwards with glued injury but he was still a full participant interestingly though he's listed as questionable for the game I don't know how much of an impact he's GonNa have but again, since he was a full participant I, doubt the he actually The game. Now onto the falcons, this is still not a good list although we do have some better developments. Let's get to the guys who didn't participate I three players on Friday who still did not participate in practice. The first is a name that's been at the top of the list each day kindle Sheffield the defensive back with a foot injury he did not practice. He has been ruled out for Sunday. So the depth in the secondary for the Falcons is down one player. In actually down to because the next player Safety Ricardo Allen who has third straight practice that he missed with elbow injury that he suffered during the cowboys game, he has also been ruled out. So at this point both Kendall Sheffield in Ricardo Alum Willnot be playing. They're the only two players who have been ruled out for Sunday's game, which is somewhat encouraging. I guess. But at this point I think you could expect to see. Sharon. Newsmen Jalen Hawkins getting a lot of snaps obviously corner bleeding ray Wilson is going to step in this. He has a reliable veteran who has been on the team the past several years the third name who did not. Practice on Friday was defensive intact McKinley with the groin injury right now, he is being listed as questionable. Now, there's another game status oftentimes, they will list him as doubtful, which is essentially them saying they're going to miss unless a miracle happens them listing him as questionable. He's going to be a game time decision but the fact that he has not practiced all week that he exited the cowboys game early with the injury is probably in the indication that we won't see him much if at all on Sunday So. Just. The fact that he's MRIs number practices holly we'll see him. Onto. The limited players on the defense and by the way, the these the list of them giving off his just for the Falcons defensive player's. Number one safety. MONTEK. His e he did not practice. Was Limited on Thursday. He was limited again on Friday. So right now, it looks like he will probably play and especially with Ricardo Alan. Missing this game coming up K. Z. being back there is a big deal. Linebacker Luke Kuhn he is still limited but this was after he did not participate on Wednesday and limited on Thursday. He is also being listed as questionable at this point. The fact that he's practice two days in a row is probably an indication that they're going to try to get him in there. Even if they help him out by sharing snaps with Michael Walker, the rookie that we drafted this year. Defensive. Tackle Marlon Davidson, he has been limited all week and Dan Quinn said he's making progress. He said that Davidson has passed to with three tests that they're looking for him to pass. He needs to pass one more on Friday have heard word on whether he did that or not. But it sounding like Davidson could be in the lineup this Sunday against the bears. If not I fully expect, he will be playing in week four for his first NFL action. So even if he does see some action against the bears, it may be somewhat limited at first. Good News on the other side opposite tap McKinley Defensive End Dante Valor, he did participate he was limited participant he's also being listed as questionable. If I were to guess him attack I think it's much more likely that Fowler plays. He had the ankle injury again, he finished the cowboys game and I think that's the big thing here whereas tack had the stay out Fowler was able to finish. Even if he was somewhat less effective after the injury, he has had A. Two straight practices where he's been limited. So that is good news looks like he could be back on the field. And finally, you know the Full Participation Defensive Tackle Jacob to Mariner Tyler Davidson and defensive. End Charles Harris. Fully expect all three these guys to play on the defense onto the offensive side of the ball. A couple of guys got rest veteran rest days that was girly carpenter. So nothing to be worried about their, if you see their names pop up as. Having not practice. That was because of veteran rest as the only offensive player who did not practice on Friday was wide receiver Julio Jones with Hamstring Injury So makes three straight days that he has not participated in practice. He is currently listed as questionable Dan Quinn said that Friday, morning he started with some side work. Obviously, he did not participate in the larger practices. In he said, he will be a game day decision. Some of this could be you know what coaches like to do. They don't want to give away if their starters. Their star players are not going to be in the game on Sunday. I will be very surprised if Julio plays. If he does play, he's probably going to be on a snap count so. It was nice to see him out there. But honestly, we need him healthy and healthy is a relative term, these days with Julio. So we just don't need him fighting through a hamstring injury through the rest of the season It would almost be preferable at this point for him to get some rest get ready for the next game. But right now, Quinn, the saying he's going to be a game. Day. Decision. Limited in Friday's practice first of all. Tackle Caleb Gary he actually went from. Not participating to being a limited participant and this is with the MC L. Sprain. So given the fact that many of us myself included thought he had a severe knee injury in the game against the cowboys. This is actually really encouraging right now he's being listed as questionable, and again I think the fact that matt go no played so well. In that backup role at right tackle probably means that he will be maybe depth for this game They may keep him active but really try to. His activity and have him ready to go in week four. So right now, mcgarry is trending in the right direction, which is great to see and thankfully wasn't the severe knee injury at many many of us thought in right now it looks like he's feeling pretty quickly. So so great news there Luke Stocker the tight end with a hip injury he didn't participate on Thursday. He was back.

cowboys Falcons bears Julio Jones Dan Quinn Marlon Davidson McKinley Chicago Mario Edwards Sheffield Luke Stocker Ricardo Allen Fowler Ricardo Alan Khalil Mac ray Wilson Jalen Hawkins Luke Kuhn

"Our for the past defense saw a a few days ago in ricardo <unk>. I mean we all know dan quinn has said that. He's like a coach on the field. <hes> one of the most intelligent football players in the league. He just puts everyone where they're supposed to be in. We saw just how much the falcons suffered from that lack of communication. When he went down last season there was just brutal so to have them both fully healthy young into the season. It can't be understated absolutely agree with everything you said geno. When i was with you at camp <hes> last weekend we both got to listen to ricardo allen talk a little bit about <hes> you know getting back into swing things and he had some interesting stories about what he has been doing during the offseason do you do you want to share with the fans a little bit about what he told us that it was absolutely fascinating. I would love to because it is actually fascinating. <hes> yes so ricardo spent his rehab. The time has recovery time after surgery he said about a month after surgery he was just like studying defense setting defense he got bored with ethan started studying how offenses work and he went back to like bill walsh and like the origins of the west coast offense you know built that foundation than went from there and he said to the media that day that his intention is to become an offensive coordinator finished lang football and when i heard him i didn't tweet it right away. Because i was like shirley he doesn't mean offensive coordinator but he absolutely did and when he explained it the time in but he put it into learning all the functions of offense and he even during o._t._a.'s got permission from dan quinn to sit in on the offense of needing so while the defense was doing their insults. You know he knows what they're doing. He he already knows the sefence he is an learning offense is doing and matt ryan said that actually you his perspective as a defensive back and he played corner all through college so he's played all over the defensive backfield. He has such a comprehensive for heads of understanding of it that he's pointing out things that the offense doesn't think about and so. I think that's really fascinating. I think that that i think that he's just an an incredible player at an incredible person. I think that he is he is very unique and very special because there aren't very many people who would pursue the game that way as recovering from an injury sorry but man i mean if you think about how that perspective will benefit the offense because of all that coupled with having where he morris as the wide receivers coach it helps receivers think about how defensive backs try to stop them and then how they can avoid that in for ricardo it helps him be a better safety because he has a better understanding of what you know certain formations man what to anticipate from that and so it's just it's really interesting and i'm obviously i expect fact ricardo to play for many more years. I think the number that matt ryan put on it was fifteen man. That's that seems like a lot but <hes> i think he has a lot of years of of length by less than him but yet it is completely believable to me that he could become an offense coordinator and a damn good one yeah and i i will say seeing him talking person you cannot help but love ricardo allen as a player as as a man. He is just a a fantastic. I love that the falcons have him. I love that he is a guy that was originally cut by this team and <hes> has worked his way up to being a starter and not just any star like a key starter on this defense like odd on pointed out someone that dan quinn said as a coach on the field if you're not rooting for ricardo allen. I don't know what you're doing with your life. This is the kind of guy you root for so yeah fantastic we do. We have time for a very quick ricardo alan story from this season stu it okay so ricardo. Allen is the nicest person alive and a pleasant byproduct of this story is that we get to yea roast..

"I feel like I'm like, let's give a kid a shoddy just started. But you're right. He has played a lot of football. He's played a lot more football than Sam darnold who I'm hiring. Is that crazy? I mean, just kind of wrap up this game SAM's been inconsistent as well. I think he's in a much worse situation. I mean in the last game, he struggle. They didn't have a noon wa. I don't know if you saw Hal just got IRA to which is going to hurt a lot. I I don't know the I kind of last week. I thought he had shown a couple of things against. Some some pretty bad defenses. But the jets defense is actually quite good in my opinion. So I don't know let me ask you this before to route this up if you had to choose between Trubisky and darnold at this point. Who would you go with? I don't use darnold. Just because right off the bat. You know Donnell has while he he's had some pretty bad games. I mean last week was horrible game that great not great. You seen him put together games? Like where you think? Okay. You know, we just give this time. This is a really really young quarterback prospect. He's only twenty one right? Even that has to give us some confidence. Like you've had you've seen the good performances from such a young guy in two already twenty four. He's played in eighteen games. You throw in twenty touchdown passes. That's not very impressive in today's NFL. Issues. You know, I don't really know what the long-term upside is that you've isky but with darnold you've already seen them put together complete games. It's just more in the versus on the top of defense, the NFL. All right. So in lieu of the Thursday night game in lieu of I know, you guys want us to talk about patriots bills. I know everybody is extremely curious about that matchup. But I'm going to skip it because we've got the biggest falcons fan. I know here. I don't know that many falcons fans, but you are one of them. And I know I guess I, you know, I can't do a Jay Cutler voice. But I'm gonna try. Phuket's versus themselves. The segment. I'm sorry. I'm so good at impersonations. Thank you. I appreciate it. Look falcons eights. Eights. They're so injured that it's kinda hard to even talk about them like a real team or evaluate them. If that makes sense on defense, obviously, not enough. So I want to ask goes without saying that the season has been disappointing. And before the I think we thought that I don't wanna say they would be a Super Bowl contender. But they were certainly in the mix in the NFC. Do you attribute all of this to injuries, or do you think it goes beyond that? I think on defense a lot of it can be attributed injuries. I mean. Losing dion. Joan Neil recurring awhile. Our enough this evening. I think Jones probably probably like ten or eleven. But the drop off. I think the biggest issue they didn't have much death behind them outside of demont, the keys been great. So in for Ricardo Alan every safety. I mean, the dropbox from Kiani Neil to Jordan Richards that been. I mean, really hard to watch just going from a sure tackler. Yeah. Really bad. Neal was one of the best strong faces in the league in my opinion. Just in terms of uniform. Worth. Plaza playing against tight ends that aren't named Travis Kelsey, I he's been pretty great in regard over the past years. And then you just get Jordan Richard to can't really do either in gets run over consistently in doesn't make the right place and space and can't really tackle the soul. So those issues of read their head and also the drop Jones Duke Riley has been a tremendous. Well, they've kind of at least worth the giants. The time to Rabaul to fill the gap a little bit with Bruce Carter and they're six round rookie foyer allure Kuhn. So that kinda helped but outside of those injuries. "I feel like I'm like, let's give a kid a shoddy just started, but you're right. He has played a lot of football. He's played a lot more football than Sam darnold who I'm hiring. Is that crazy? I mean, just kind of wrap up this game. SAM's been inconsistent as well. I think he's in a much worse situation. I mean, in the last game he struggled. They didn't have a noon wa. I don't know if it's below Powell. Just got IRA to which is going to hurt a lot. I, I don't know though I kinda high on him last week. I, that he had shown me a couple of things against. Some some pretty bad defenses, but the jets defense is actually quite good in my opinion. So I don't know. Let me ask you this before to route this up. If you had to choose between Trubisky darnold at this point, would you go with. Don't use darnold just because right off the bat, you know, Donald has while he he's had some pretty bad games. I mean, last week is horrible game that great. You seen him put together games like where you think, okay, you know, we just give this time. This is a really, really young quarterback prospect made it. He's he's still only twenty one right. Even that has to give you some confidence like you've had, you've seen the good performances from such a young guy in business already. Twenty four. He's played in eighteen games in twenty touchdown passes. That's not very impressive in today's NFL issues, you know, I, I don't really know what the long-term upside is what you're Bisky, but with Arnold you've already seen them put together, complete games. It's just more in the do it versus some of the tougher defensively NFL I. So in lieu of the Thursday night Dame in lieu of, I know you guys want us to talk about patriots bills. I know everybody is extremely curious about that matchup but I'm going to skip it because we've got the biggest falcons fan. I know here I don't know that many falcons fans, but you are one of them. And I, I guess, I, you know, I can't do Jay Cutler voice, but I'm gonna try. Phuket's versus themselves. Segment. I'm sorry. I'm so good at impersonations. Thank you. I appreciate it. Look, falcons, eights. Eights. They're so injured that it's kinda hard to even talk about them like a real team or evaluate them if that makes sense on defense, obviously not on offense. So I wanna ask goes without saying that the season has been disappointing and before the season, I think we thought that I don't wanna say they would be a Super Bowl contender, but they were certainly in the mix in the NFC. Do you attribute all of this to injuries, or do you think it goes beyond that. Oh, I think on defense, a lot of it can be attributed injuries. I mean, losing Dion, Joan, Kiana, Neil, Ricardo alad, Neil an hour after the season. I think Jones probably the probably back like we hang or eleven. I. But the drop off, I think the biggest issues they didn't have much death behind them out side of the month. The keys has been great filling in for Ricardo, Alan at free safety. I mean, the drop off from Kennedy, Neil to Jordan Richards that then. I mean, really hard to watch just going from shirt tackler straw. Yeah, really bad. It's like Tian Neal was one of the best strong faces in the league in my opinion, just in terms of being a force of wrestling plaza playing against tight ends that aren't named Travis. Kelsey. I e he's been pretty great and never guard over the past years. And then you just get Jordan Richards who can't really do either that in gets run over consistently and doesn't make the right place and space and can't really tackle the soul. So those issues have read their head and also the drop Jones. Duke Riley has been a tremendous well, they've kinda or at least worth the giants. They kind of Rabl to fill the gap a little bit with Bruce Carter and they're six round rookie foyer, we will Kuhn. So vast kinda helped. But outside of those injuries that the biggest issue on the falcons defenses, then the regression of easily over the past years..

"We've talked about this. Some people think is a trap game for came and break. I do not. I think Cam bright is going to destroy James Winstons throw for at least two hundred sixty yards and three touchdowns in his last three matchups with Atlanta. He's Mike stream of the week this week. This is the falcons defense lacking count o.'neil Dion Jones Ricardo Alan last season. Last year. James Winston threw for over three hundred yards and six of thirteen games. And that includes the games where he got knocked out and. Came back way too early from his shoulder injury. The he is an absolute yardage machine. Pairing things down at the tight end position to just came a bright. We don't have to worry about the split between Britain. Howard, I think that actually helps Jameis Winston because he likes to focus in on guys and the emergence of Chris God when his well, this is offense is this is the best offense that James will have played with their also coming off the bye week that always helps. And I think that Ronald Jones while I'm not projecting in credible end of the season, he's a perfect flyer opportunity for your roster. If 'cause I think you can go get him like he doesn't. He doesn't have a lot of optimism, excitement, I think you'll get them on the cheap. You can trade somebody like, I don't know, maybe you go trade John Brown because you have an abundance of wide receivers. Whoa, I would not. And you know, I think that's great advice, totally fine because what you do Mike and and you've all people you're Mr. depth at the running back position. Of course, if you want to pick up Ronald Jones, and let's. Say you have even if it's a coin flip that he ends up with seventeen eighteen carries an productive week. He's not available for that price next week because he's running back. So I think that if you think he could do it, you, he is still available in what third, he's actually thirty percent. So he's available in the majority of league still. He is available on the waiver wire. I would not trade Jane. John Brown. I agree. You would not drop John Brown for him. Fair point. What do you guys think about the wide receivers split with Winston Evans, Jackson Godwin, look Evans is a must start every week, bus Evans and Evans into Sean Jackson. Those are the two guys. I actually want to start. I did highlight Chris Godwin, but there's there's concern because two weeks ago Adam Humphreys played more snaps then Chris Godwin it defies logic. It appears that Chris God, when is the far superior wide receiver, but I'm not the coach making the decisions. And then you have a difference of offense of philosophy between Ryan Fitzpatrick who targets only wide receivers to James who heavily utilizes his tight ends. So I have my concerns about starting Chris God when this week. I hope I'm wrong, but I would prefer not the plane flipping to the other side, the home team, the falcons, Matt Ryan at home, he has a seventy six percent completion percentage. He's he drops down a fifth. Eight percent on the road thus far. And I have a note here, I guess Brooks, you might have added this. It says, Julio Jones destroyed the souls of Tampa Bay secondary last year with twelve catches for two hundred fifty three yards and two touchdowns. Do you think it's possible that he could score again in his career? I think that it's never gonna happen. No, actually he's my number one wide receiver happens first Julio's scoring, or you getting a league record win. I believe I think who won in the doors week. Yeah, Julio scores this week. So the wind will come at the end of the week who knows will come during the week. So Julio Julio's I who has my number one wide receiver. I mean everyone's starting, but I, I think you can expect a huge game from him at home. You just described how good Matt Ryan has been at home. They need this is a divisional match up with a beatable defense. So yes, one hundred percent now Austin Hooper. That's a name that has been very interesting because Tainan landscape has been, we'll say piss port, and you know, you don't know who to start. And I think Austin Hooper is a guy..

"So, yeah, I'm with you. I think at some point it becomes untenable. How do you, how do you sell it to you? The young guy. On your defense and on your offense for that matter that one of your best players doesn't have to practice, but but they do right. I, it's got a chance to really cause problems if it continues like this, and, and that's why I think ultimately a trade is in everyone's best interest. Obviously it's what will want, and it may be that is wanna give what he wants, but he's gonna seem like he's going to try and continue to make it difficult for them. Well, from Thomas does get traded, where where do we think he's going to go? I mean, the Cowboys were the sort of the hot team for a while, and then we saw him 'bout the Cowboys sideline after that intercept innocence science where he wants to go, well, they had their chance and they didn't take it. And I don't know for the Cowboys sake, it makes a ton of sense for them to go after him and signed him and trade for him. Now given that they're, they're not going anywhere really on on offense this year, and he's not going to fix that and they could theoretically signed him as a free agent. That's awesome. Is there a teen think makes sense? Independent of a contract extension for him for twenty eighteen. Well, Atlanta needs somebody. They've lost their two starters to injury already, Kansas City, and he's all kinds of help in the secondary to support a. I mean, they could have the best offense in the worst defense in the league. We haven't so hard to imagine. That's that's a team we've heard in terms of interest in Earl. Thomas is Kansas City. I haven't heard Atlanta, but you know, Tampa Bay that division. Everybody needs to safety. Auto Carolina. Just signed Eric Reed make headlines here today. But yeah, there's there's, there's some teams that needs to know. But again, Atlanta, you know, he knows Dan quince defense, right? So I mean, that would make a lot of sense to me. That's the one that I don't understand. Like why they have a team that number, why not? They have cap space. They have their team that wants to compete for the Super Bowl. They have on offense that can pull it off. Now it's Sarkissian apparently figured out how to run the offense in the red zone. For the first time, their offense looks good. The defenses injuries have cost them. They have. They have allowed running backs to. Catch David wasn't number I, I found they had there have been three fifteen target running backs in the last five years in two of them against the falcons. The last two weeks. Earl, Thomas isn't gonna fix that, but he's going to reduce the amount of research you have to put towards the back end of the defense, and you can kind of worry about the guys in front of him and he's gonna take care of what happens behind them. And he does the scheme. I- shocks me. They haven't made this trade already. Just seems like such an obvious fit that I don't understand why you would be getting by with with your backups and safety for a team that could win the Super Bowl if they if things like right on defense, just loss Ricardo, Alan on Sunday. Yes, I mean, so that's not that's a new injury. So it's possible that things are changing there, but you know, I think he is a guy that could be he could he be the Jones or county that could still come back. I forget what kind of Neil has the. Yeah, so he's done. Right. Okay. So I got my my falcon injuries mixed. So yeah, they, they definitely. I mean, look, they again haven't aid and he knows he knows the defense. He knows. You know, Dallas makes sense too because they have Chris Rashard who comes from Seattle, and I think he would do sit there for that reason. But you know, Dallas, if you decide, hey, we're gonna. We're gonna win ten six games all year, right, and bring him in and and be better on defense than you already think you are. But yeah, land is in danger of sliding out of this thing with if all of a sudden Tampa Bay's a real factor and they just lost at home to the saints. That was a crusher..

"A player that has immediate value because I have some streaming options or if you're looking for a player that might have some upside season-long, but let me start with the week. Four streaming option. Yep. I think Ryan tannehill who's completed over seventy one percent of his passes so far this year gets a New England doing when defense has top bottom ten in terms of. Passing yards allowed has a really good player in Stefan Gilmore another one endeavor mccourty and then a lot of inexperienced we've seen the patriots can be had through the air. Another week for streaming option, I would consider is Andy, Dalton. He cratered in week three. He was bad, and yet he still has multiple passing touchdowns in each of his game. So far he's got over his last seventeen games. Thirty three touchdown passes. So there's a lot of ups. There's enough upside for Andy, Dalton against a falcons defense is now down to starting safeties and Ricardo Alan and Kiana Neal, Dionne Jones tacked mckinlay's been banged up for them. This is the falcons team that I think is ripe for the picking last dreaming option. By the way case keenum he plays the the chiefs that alone right there enough motivation to consider him. And yeah, the the tubes have been awful. That's the Monday night game. That game is in Denver. So Mike, I turn to you any of those names jump out at you. The two things that are interesting to me off of those real quickly as first off the red rifle. Since Bill laser took over, I tweeted the stat out last week. It's still true to this day that since Bill as our took over as offense coordinator, the Cincinnati Bengals the red rifle Andy, Dalton, third in the NFL and touchdown passes and feel mentioned how banged up those falcons defense. I'm actually buying the Bengals offense, not just as the streaming option, but legitimately so. And are we buying these three? Oh dolphins. So those are the two things that I mean like they're undefeated and tannehill has played. Well, what when you when you start three zero, you have a path to wildcard for sure. Especially the way the AFC is set up this year though. I mean, look at the offensive juggernauts in the north right now. Obviously Pittsburgh Baltimore right averaging, how many touchdowns per game, Cincinnati, even Cleveland now with Baker Mayfield. So that's going to be interesting to watch that play out. I'm not buying Miami yet. I mean they played Tennessee and extreme circumstances with a lot of players missing onto titans. They beat Oakland in the jets. Big challenge here. I'll buy them if they go into New England and take a commanding three game lead in the AFC east. I want to say this about. The patriots defense. This is going forward ended this matchup specifically tannehill coming into town. I don't think people realize this. They have been better than average in touchdowns allowed their defense, ten, straight seasons. I mean, it seems like even when they don't always have the out, right, shut teams down and especially coming off a couple of bad games in a row. It's just I, I'm not there. I'm not going to succumb to recency bias. I still think the patriots are going to be a powerhouse going forward. Even on the defensive side of the ball, it does feel like a little bit of a trap game there, but there's no question that Ryan tannehill host played well by the way, Mike, you brought up Baker Mayfield field. So I'm curious how you see him for the rest of the season because I know he makes your list as well. He does. And I mentioned this in the column very specifically, and I talked about this on the podcast yesterday. Sometimes people do things and fantasy football emotionally, an interest wise, right? I'm adding Baker Mayfield because I'm curious about what he could become and I get it the sample size of what Baker Mayfield. Has been in the NFL is tiny. It's also remarkable enough people have told me there's no way he keeps that up. What if there's a five percent chance that he does play at a high level, a top twelve quarterback level. This is your one chance to take advantage of it because I don't think that this next match against the raiders is going to be the one where he trips and falls despite the fact that he's a rookie Mississippi. First career NFL start..

"Today. Brent Grimes, a veteran was inaccurate game with a groin injury. The buccaneers at one point we're playing three rookie free first year players in the secondary in the second half of the game. So there are a little thin and young in the secondary. But this was a game with the defend ten to stand up and I know Philadelphia minute interesting at the end with a couple touchdowns with that deal for all played well today, it helped him get the win. Awesome. TJ always a pleasure. We appreciate your patience. Thanks so much for giving us a few minutes again today here on the NFL on tune it. I love it. I want you to replicate the fits man. Outfit today. I expect the pitcher on social media later tonight or tomorrow. I'm waiting for the simulcast. It'll take me five years to grow the beard, but at least they'll have a goal. Thank you, teaching this NFL huddle the podcast. Now let's spotlight the divisional match up between the Panthers and falcons with Lovie my Haley, the former falcons fullback. Now, let's recap the falcons thirty one twenty four divisional win over the Panthers pleased to be joined by Obama Halley, the former Pro Bowl fullback for the falcons over. Thanks so much for taking the time. Would you take away from the wind today? Man. Winds were able to right some wrongs from ads week. 'cause does the around Atlanta? A lot of people weren't happy. We want GIO game in the pre season. Then we lost our first game and the fashion with kids. So to get this win and do where were a lot better, the red zone, a lot on third down a lot better with some of the basics of the game to let people know who are sales that we have that foundation. That was a good to watch. Yeah, looking at it, I thought one big point was the red zone. The focus on on getting seven points in the red zone focused on really finding ways to be versatile, not just doing the throwing the fate of Julio. How did that come about. I think it's really just from experience. I know that we have a game like on the shows last week. We try to work on a weakness. Y'all is short week is late in the week is leap falcons, not just this year for for a couple of years Redstone, and they just probably got it right because it's one thing that draw up a certain way. One thing, the frats yet, but when the lights are on with the cross stick and down when you know, was looking at you gotta exit and they're probably able to execute over and over and over again. And even Matt running that play in the red zone. It's I, it is because iron is rookie seasons. When I came in in a baby giraffe running when he tried to expand. Out of break, but you a strong three guys. What's the replay? Couple times three guys came at him. He guy hit spread around the rate moving, and you know The the way way. talking falcons with Lovie Mahendra leap as Atlanta picked up the division, the wind today over Carolina, despite the fact of the freemen unable to play and according to reports, he could be out for a few more weeks with the knee issue. So Lovie whatever Coleman show you with his hundred yard, rushing game. Goldman always doing shifty, but that one run on the outside or. Outside came back the inside and took off everything each show, our wear, but you could carry a cute all you wanted to. If he will just be a guy, you want that competitive nature to be in all of your planes. You want them to to like they could be the guy any time. He's so good. You know, not only strength now, only powered brew blocks breaking tackles, but just what the consistency making good decisions because tailback is only as good as officer or always good as how we can work with is often divine. Did you know what off defensively in the secondary, particularly had some injuries had a suspension of big time performance today. Ricardo Alan gets an interception. You have to find ways to be successful against a guy like Cam Newton because in the pocket, he can get outside of it at times and move it being able to throw a ball down the field.

"ACL. He is done for the season in falls on third round or Mason Cole who will be a starter most likely Shipley now heads into free agency at age thirty, two of twenty also a bad situation for him anything. Yeah. To me what sticks about this is Steve Wilks has really emphasized off-season. Everything starts up front. That's his new mantra. And one of the most bizarre opinions I've heard from a head coach this year is Steve Wilks opinion that the strength of the cardinals, the offensive line. This was an offensive line that was one of the biggest weaknesses in the league. Last year they added Justin Pugh. They ended under Smith who was in and out at Cincinnati over the years and they didn't do much else adding there. So I think to me like, okay, the potential. May have been the strength of the team, but that's neglecting to point out that the almost every position on on this offense of line comes with a huge question. Mark, the falcons have agreed to three year extension worth close to twenty million with defensive back Ricardo. Alan, the free safety had been in talks with the team for some time and they get a deal done. So at another piece again, Mark good franchises have stability, assault player been really active. They extended Matt Ryan, Jake Matthews paid Julio Jones, I guess, Grady, Jared, maybe the last name on the list here. One of, yeah, I think he should be next and he's maybe the best player of all those guys. Ricardo Allen was one of the only memorable parts of pretty quiet hard. Knock season. He came out of nowhere. That's true hard knock season at the time he was trying to make the team. So this is does show you like you can remake your career if you land in the right place. I didn't watch that hard knocks, but one of my. Few ever takeaways from Super Bowl media night was during the falcons patriots SuperBowl in that weekly enough to it. Because Alan, I looked at as kind of a fringe player who was lucky to be a starter, and you could tell just after that meeting night, he was one of the leaders of that defense. And now another addition of keeping up. Yes, it is MAURICE boring or former draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings, Germany product trying to make his way in the NFL didn't work out with the Vikings. So he caught on with who Mark well, at the Cincinnati, Bengals dolls. And what is new with Mogo? What's new is he largely? I wouldn't say flamed out just did not materialize wide receiver, and they have he added on some towns are boy Henry Hodgson Hanson or hang, who is very, apparently very in close friends with mobaric. Jer noted that he added on tacked on some weight is now become a tight end for the Bengals everyone. And that was another additional keeping up with..
