A highlight from Your-Weekly-Tech-Update-EP-132

"Hello everyone! Welcome to your weekly tech update, the show that explores the newest, coolest, and sometimes mind -boggling side of tech available on the interwebs. I am your tech therapist, Ray McNeil. I'm here to take your mind off of the current state of the world and my prescription? Technology. Coming up on the program today, Google's Tilt Brush virtual painting app is coming to the PlayStation VR. This has me so excited. Valve's first entry into the Half -Life world in 13 years is now available and it's in VR. And happening in this week's What The... We're actually going to rename the segment this week to give you just a moment of joy. That and a whole lot more coming up on today's edition of your weekly tech update, next. Hi everyone. Google's Tilt Brush painting app is conquering one of its few remaining frontiers. We're talking about consoles. The search giant has teamed up with Outerloop Games to release the 3D creative tool for the PlayStation VR. To no one's surprise, it's the same experience just in your living room. It turned your PlayStation Move controllers into virtual brushes that you can use to create pretty much any immersive masterpiece that you can dream up. And yes, Sony is aware that Move controllers aren't always easy to find. It's actually selling a $100 Tilt Brush bundle that includes two wands plus a code for Tilt Brush. That kit doesn't include the PlayStation VR headset itself, but it beats having to scrounge for controllers at other stores or even shops like Goodwill. However you complete your setup, it could be worth the expense if you need another creative tool to help you relax during a particularly stressful time. Dragon's Lair was a technological marvel when it was released way back in 1983. Instead of using conventional graphics of the day, which were not great at all, it featured real animation by ex -Disney animator Don Bluth enabled by beefy laser disc storage. It wasn't a particularly good game. Alright, it was horrible, but those stunning visuals turned it into a five -star quarter eater and inspired home versions on a variety of platforms. The original is on Steam right now if you wanted to play it, and GOG picked up the Dragon's Lair trilogy back in 2018. In 2015, Bluth and Gary Goldman launched a $550 ,000 Kickstarter project to help fund the creation of Dragon's Lair the movie. It tanked, so they cancelled and went to Indiegogo looking for $250 ,000 slightly over what was pledged on Kickstarter. At this time, they were actually successful, achieving their goal in just a couple of weeks and ultimately pulling in more than $350 ,000. And now, according to The Hollywood Reporter anyway, the project has been picked up by Netflix, with none other than Ryan Reynolds in talks to star as Dragon's Lair hero, Dirk the Daring. Bluth, Goldman, and John Pomeroy, another animator who left Disney to work with Bluth, are producing this. Netflix confirmed the report on Twitter. Dragon's Lair isn't very big on plot. Princess Daphne has been kidnapped by the Dragon Singe and is being held in the fortress of the evil wizard Marduk. And Dirk the Daring, a bold, vaguely dumbwitted knight, crashes the castle to rescue her. The game itself doesn't provide any greater depth because it's basically a series of rapid -fire quick -time events. That means the writers have the freedom to run with pretty much whatever they want. But whether that's actually a good thing, we'll have to wait and see. Hopefully it will be better than Reynolds' last collaboration with Netflix, the Michael Bay -directed cinematic fiasco Six Underground. Honestly, I can't imagine it being any worse. However, I am an action fan and I did find some mild entertainment out of that movie. Tesla is preparing to release an update to its Autopilot system that will enable it to finally automatically stop at traffic lights. And a video of the system at work has already been released. The automaker is supposed to induce more advanced driver assist features meant to help city driving, the same way Autopilot has been helping Tesla drivers for highway driving. It's part of what CEO Elon Musk calls the feature -complete version of its full self -driving capability, which Tesla was supposed to push at least to its early access owners by the end of last year. Instead, Tesla pushed what Musk called a full self -driving preview, which was the integration of stop signs and traffic lights in Tesla's Autopilot visualization. When the automaker pushed the update in December, Tesla's Autopilot system didn't act on those traffic lights. Now, it looks like Tesla has started to push an Autopilot update with the actual ability to handle intersections to its early access fleet, a group of owners who beta test new software updates from Tesla. Out of Spec Motoring on Twitter, who apparently has access to a Model 3 with early access software, released a video of the new Autopilot software in action. It shows the Model 3 detecting the red light and stopping the car on its own with some new driving visualizations. The driver assist feature for city driving is part of a promise that Tesla has made since starting to sell its full self -driving package many years ago now. It's going to be available to owners of Tesla vehicles with the latest Autopilot hardware and who paid the $7 ,000 full self -driving capable package price, which has been listing these two upcoming features, recognize and respond to traffic lights and stop, and automatic driving on city streets. The fact that the feature is in early access right now means that Tesla is closer than ever to releasing it to its broader fleet, but the timeline is not exactly clear. Sometimes Tesla only takes days between pushing a feature to its early access owners and the larger customer fleet, while at other times it can take weeks. While Tesla Autopilot will be able to automatically operate at intersections like with Autopilot on the highway, Tesla still says that drivers must keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times and, of course, be ready to take control. The driver is still always responsible for driving a Tesla vehicle.

"From the way from this interview it's that we almost get up and move around a lot more because the latest danger of sitting is dementia washington boat health columnist gretchen reynolds joined wtop's dimitri sodas to talk about how anything may impact our brains health we already knew that sitting was probably not good for us but this study looked at whether it could affect brain health whether people who sit a lot have an increased risk in the following five to seven years for dementia and the study looked at fifty thousand men and women so it was quite large and they all wore an accelerometer so you got a really objective measure of how much they were sitting and how much they were moving and it turned out that a lot of them were sitting for at least 10 hours a day which may sound like a lot but that's actually the average for how much people sit between office home commuting and if people sat for at least 10 hours a day their risk of dementia rose by about eight percent and if they sat for 12 hours a day which a lot of us do their risk rose by almost 70 percent. A lot of us thought yes I sitting am a lot at work and then I have my couch time watching Netflix or whatever but I also get my work out in but this report is basically saying exercise probably is not enough. What they found was even if people exercised if dude you get up in the morning go for a run go for a walk at lunchtime if you still manage to sit for at least 10 hours which a lot of us do then your risk was exactly the same if as you hadn't exercised. So it's the total time you spend with your bottom tied to the chair that seems to matter and the good news though in that and the scientists that I talked to said this is if you can sit for less than 10 hours a day if even if it's nine and a half hours a day your risk goes down a lot so just finding ways to sit less. I'm standing up right now as I talk to you stand up during phone calls park a little farther away before you get to the office just find any way can that you to sit less and it does look like your risk for cognitive decline and dementia will be less. I'm Hugh Hewitt in Studio North. There's a lot to cover today, a lot to talk about. I'm going to begin, though, by telling you about my friend Terry Eastland, who died yesterday. And I want to read Roger Clegg's short obituary in the National Review, which posted yesterday at 1133. Roger writes, I met Terry Eastland after we had both joined the Justice Department during the Reagan administration in the early 1980s. So we were friends for approximately four decades. He and I were fellow Texans and appreciated not only Ronald Reagan, but Southern cuisine together. To be sure, Terry's expertise on barbecue in particular was deeper than mine, no doubt helped by the fact that his wife Jill was from North Carolina. Terry's Southern roots were manifest in other ways. He was devoted to the Atlanta Braves and sold encyclopedias and or Bibles door to door. I forget which and maybe it was both. He went to Vanderbilt and Oxford, studied the classics, eventually became a journalist. Readers of National Review knew Terry as a distinguished and stalwart conservative intellectual. He's the author of numerous books and innumerable articles and high on the masthead of the American Spectator and Weekly Standard, among other publications. He was not a lawyer, but wrote beautifully and wisely about a range of legal issues, including separation of powers, religious freedom and equal protection. We work together, writes Roger Clegg, most recently at the Center for Equal Opportunity, where Terry continued his lifelong fight for colorblind equal opportunity. Terry was one of the most pleasant and thoughtful people I ever met, a learned and genuine Christian in every sense of the word. No surprise then that he was devoted to his family, helping to care for his mother and mother -in -law and mentally challenged sister, as well as being a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Jill sent me a text this morning. Terry passed away gently this morning. He is with his savior. That's a beautiful and short farewell to Terry Eastland. Everyone who is in the conservative legal movement, I mean, really, everyone who's in the conservative legal movement, who's 40 and older, has worked with Terry. And I don't think anyone can say this, I don't think Terry had any enemies. I really don't. I met Terry at a Bethel Bible study in 1983 when I was clerking on the D .C. Circuit and the Fetching Mrs. Hewitt persuaded me to go over to a national Presbyterian church. You know, I'm a Catholic, but this is my first dipping the toe into the Presbyterian world. And there are about 14 people from Jack and Edna who were in their 70s, right down to young married couples like the Fetching Mrs. Hewitt and myself in the Eastlands and a number of other people led by Anne Dennison. And we met together once a week for two years to go through the Bible, especially useful to people like me who have no idea what's the organization thereof. But Terry was there and first time you go around the room, what are you doing? And I said, well, I'm clerking on the United States Court of Appeals for the District Columbia Circuit. Terry lit up and said, that's interesting that I'm over at the Department of Justice. We should have lunch. And we did. And Terry and I and Jill and the Fetching Mrs. Hewitt became fast, fast friends over two years in Bible study. And then Terry recruited me to DOJ off the court. He went in and said, do you want to work over here? Bill Smith, because I was going to Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher, a big law firm. I'd accepted their offer. I was doing a clerkship and was going to go to GDC downtown D .C. Said, you want to come on to work over here? You know, Bill Smith, he's a Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher partner. He'd probably like you. And so I took my resume into Tex Lazar, who was the new chief of staff after Judge Ken Starr had left. And I interviewed with Tex and I interviewed with General Smith and I went over to work there. And Terry and I worked together for the time I was at Justice. And after I went over to the White House, he stayed with Ed Meese when Ed Meese arrived and became the head of public affairs for Ed Meese. And the four horsemen would run in those years somewhat fast. That's Brad Reynolds, Chuck Cooper, Terry Eastland and Hugh Hewitt would run down the mall every day back in the 80s and back up solving the problems of the world. The conservative legal movement is broad and it's older than the Federalist Society actually begins in 1981 at the Reagan Department of Justice and with Ed Meese at the White House. And it flowered. And in the middle of it was a non -lawyer, Terry Eastland. I'm not saying he's central to everything, he just knew everyone. He wrote carefully, constructively, amusingly, and he was never angry. He was indeed the nicest man in Washington, D .C. And part of that is Texas and part of that is Christianity and part of it is his humility. And he really brought home this to me, the most important non -life lesson but intellectual lesson I learned from Terry. The Constitution was written to be understood by ordinary people. It was written by landed people for people who were not landed and not often literate so that they could adopt it in state conventions and that you ought to be able to read it and understand it and reason it. Terry wrote great books about the Supreme Court. He wrote great books about the law. He wrote great books about affirmative action, especially which offended him deeply because he came from very, very little. And he ended up going to Vanderbilt and Oxford and becoming an intellectual. He's a newspaper editor at the Virginia pilot, Norfolk pilot, I believe, and before that at the Observer. And he was recruited originally by Bill Smith, General Smith, to be a speechwriter and then he took over all of comms for General Meese.

Whether you work from home or go into the office, how many hours a day is your butt seated firmly in a chair? If you take nothing else away from this interview, it's that we must all get up and move around a lot more. The latest danger of sitting? Dementia. Washington Post health columnist Gretchen Reynolds joined WTOP's Dimitri Sotis to talk about how sitting may affect our brain health. We already knew that sitting was probably not good for us but this study looked at whether it could affect brain health, whether people who sit a lot have an increased risk in the five following to seven years for dementia. And the study looked at 50 ,000 women men and so it was quite large and they all wore an accelerometer so you got a really objective measure of how much they were sitting and how much they were moving. And it turned out that a lot of them were sitting for at least 10 hours a day which may sound like a lot but that's actually the average for how much people sit between office, home, commuting and if people sat for at least 10 hours a day their risk of dementia rose by about eight percent and if they sat for 12 hours a day which a lot of us do their risk rose by almost 70 percent. Chris Christie on His 2024 Strategy and America's Political Silos

"I'm back now with former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who's rising in the polls. Governor, how often are you in New Hampshire? Well, I'm just finishing a two day trip here. The last time I was here was about two weeks ago. And I'll be back in New Hampshire the next time after the debate on August 23rd. Are you competing in Iowa or are you focusing everything on the Granite State? I'm competing in New Hampshire. I'm competing in South Carolina as well. And that's where I'm spending the bulk of my time is are in those two states. Now, Governor, you did POD save America and I got nothing against those guys. They're wrong about everything. And I get under their skin. But I don't mind you doing POD save America. Why did you do it, though? Because I want to show those folks our arguments. You know, the problem with America right now, in one respect to you, is that we all stay in our own silos. You know, liberals won't come on Hugh Hewitt or Guy Benson or other shows that I think would treat them very fairly. And it would allow conservatives to hear what the Republicans, the liberal arguments are. And on the other hand, with folks like POD save America and others, I want them to be exposed, those listeners, to what the arguments are by conservatives like myself. And that's why I go on those shows. I went on Kara Swisher as well. I go on those places because I want those folks to hear our arguments. I am not ready to give up on the fact that Americans can't listen to other Americans they disagree with. We need to stop having negotiable truth to

Chris Christie Weighs In on Tommy Tuberville's Military Blockade

"My guest, Governor Chris Christie, former Governor of New Jersey loves Bruce. I don't know if you're a fan of the band. Are you Governor? Absolutely. So would you prefer hearing Springsteen sing this or the band? Always Springsteen. All right. Governor, welcome back. Good to have you. I have asked Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis and Doug Burgum this question. I'm going to ask all the candidates. Senator Tuberville is upset that the Pentagon and Joe Biden have violated the Hyde Amendment. And so Senator Tuberville has put a hold on 300 military promotions. Now that affects, according to Admiral Stavridis, more than 10 ,000 people in the entire ladder of promotions, their families, etc. What do you make of Senator Tuberville's tactic? I don't think it's the right one. I share his concern about the Biden administration's disregard of the Hyde Amendment, but I don't believe the best way to do it is to impact our military readiness. Some will say it's Joe Biden's fault, and he shares the fault for that. But quite frankly, Senator Tuberville is the guy who is making these calls and holding up these promotions, and I just don't believe it's the right tactic. Now that puts you in the cab with Nikki Haley, but Governor DeSantis and Governor Burgum both say yes, use any tactic you can. What would you tell to them? And what would you say to the senator if you called him up? Well, what I'd say to the senator is let's let's work together to try to change this policy. It's obvious that his current approach to it, which has been going on for weeks in any way at all. So let's look for a more effective way to do it. And what I would say to him is that I empathize with what he's trying to accomplish, and I support it, but I don't believe doing it by impacting our military at all is the right way to go about

A highlight from President Biden's trip to NATO Summit 2023

"Welcome to today's podcast, sponsored by Hillsdale College, all things Hillsdale, hillsdale .edu. I encourage you to take advantage of the many free online courses there. And of course, to listen to the Hillsdale dialogues, all of them at hughforhillsdale .com or just Google Apple, iTunes, and Hillsdale. Morning, glory America, Bonjour, hi Canada. Good Wednesday to you. I'm Hugh Hewitt in the Studio North. President Biden went to bed. That's my lead story. And you say, why is that a lead story? There's a lot of news going on. Former President Trump is picking a fight with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds. We got a lot of John Kerry audio for those of you who want to go back to sleep. We've got questions about the Hunter Biden plea deal and whether or not Judge Mary Ellen Norika is going to do right. Well, Joe Biden went to bed. That's the lead story in the Telegraph. Biden skips NATO leaders dinner to, quote, prepare for a big speech. So, presidents tuckered out. All right. He's got to go to bed at five o 'clock because he's up at 6 a .m., which is not true. I go to bed early. You know, I got to get up early. If I sleep in, it's 5 15 when I get up. If I get up at the normal time, it's 4 30. But either way, I'm always on the air somewhere at 6 a .m. in the morning. 9 a .m. other places, 10 a .m. other places, 1 a .m., 1 p .m. other place. But I have to get up early. So I understand going to bed early. But the president flies all the way to England, which is like a three hour flight, right? It's not like he's gone around the world as Japan. He's got jet lag. You went to England from Washington, D .C. It's actually less of a change to go from Washington, D .C. to Denver. So he goes over to England and he gets completely lost with the prince. He's wandering around. And then the reports Telegraph Joe Biden skipped a dinner with NATO leaders last night to head back to his hotel in Vilnius. I'm sorry, not in England. He went on from England over to Vilnius. He went to dinner back to his hotel in Vilnius to prepare for a, quote, big speech. U .S. official blamed the 80 year old president's busy schedule on his absence at the gathering of the NATO alliance's leaders. Mr. Biden has spent the weekend at the beach before arriving in Sunday Europe on night, had Anthony Blinken, the U .S. secretary of state, attend in his place. That's going to be thrilling to everyone. I like Tony Blinken. I mean, I'd love to go to dinner with Tony Blinken. Very got a lot of good stories. You got every head of state there. There's a war in the middle of Europe. It's like going to the Tehran summit with Churchill, FDR and Stalin and FDR saying, let me send over Henry Wallace. I actually, Cordell Hall, I don't know who it was. And the idea that the president of the United States cannot stay up for a NATO summit isn't about time we had a talk with the president about just showing your cards. You're not running for reelection. There's just no way. You're 80 years old and you're feeling it. But let's give a listen to what he had to say yesterday. Cut number one. President Biden has arrived in Lithuania for the NATO summit. And he doesn't know where he's going. He's looking around. And if you're watching on the Salem news channel, you can see it. Whoever is the president of Lithuania is taller. Now he's turning around and wants to go back on the plane. Then he shakes hand and he moves forward. OK, cut number two. President Biden, Jan Stoltenberg, who is the leader of NATO and has been since I was seven. Keep going. Cut number two. Mr. President, it's great to have you here at the NATO summit. It's good to be here and thank you for continuing to deliver. I am, as I've made no mistake, not at all surprised. I've been telling the fact that I think it's really important at this critical moment in the whole NATO issue that you continue to lead NATO. You're trusted. No one knows the situation that we're facing better than you do. And this historic moment, the adding of Finland and Sweden to NATO is consequential. And your leadership really matters. And we agree on the language that we've proposed. OK, he's really sold on this Finland and Sweden deal. He's got that committed to memory. Finland and Sweden are coming in. Cut number three. This is consequential. And your leadership really matters. And we agree on the language that you proposed relative to the future of Ukraine being able to join NATO. And we're looking forward to continuing to unite NATO. They've heard me say, my American president heard me say many times, I still think that President Putin thinks the way he succeeds is to break NATO. Not going to do that, especially when you listen to us. So thank you for the moment. I am reminded of A .T., my beloved grandfather lived 101 years old on his own wheels in his own house. And I love the guy so much, Gramps. And he was a fireman, so of course I looked up to him like a giant when I was three or four. But A .T., as he got older, was always a go get him kind of guy. Didn't really, not very good on the details. Where are you? Are you at Yale? Are you at Columbus? You go to Ohio State? Not real long on the details, but great on the love, right? That's what grandparents after A .T. do. Not long on the details. They're at the baseball game. They're not sure if you're supposed to steal second or not. They're not even sure if it's a baseball game, but they're there and they're cheering for you. And Grandpa Joe is just great. He's there for Jan Stoltenberg. But it gets a little bit worrisome when he tells the Lithuanian president cut number four. Our pledge to to be with you has not waited. It didn't take us long to get thousands of troops here to want Russia invaded the second time. So we'll be able to be assured that you're going to have all that you need. If you have sector defenses today, you can send him along. It's all kidding aside. All kidding aside, that's after he jokes about Russia invading Lithuania.

Iowa law limits gender identity instruction, removes books depicting sex acts from school libraries

"Iowa governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill limiting gender identity instruction. Teachers in Iowa will be banned from raising issues about sexual orientation or gender identity to students through the 6th grade. Governor Reynolds says this puts parents in the driver's seat when it comes to their children's education. The law also means the removal of all books depicting sex acts from school libraries. Religious books would be exempt. Also, school administrators would be required to notify parents if students asked to change their pronouns or names. Keenan crow with the LGBTQ equity group one Iowa says this legislation punches down on a vulnerable group of kids and it benefits no one. I'm Ed Donahue.

State lawmakers want children to fill labor shortages, even in bars and on school nights

"Lawmakers in several states are pushing legislation that would let miners work in more hazardous occupations and longer hours. Efforts to roll back labor rules are largely led by Republican lawmakers to address worker shortages and in some cases they run afoul of federal regulations. The Ohio legislature is on track to pass a bill to allow 14 and 15 year olds to work until 9 p.m. on school nights with their parents permission. I will Republican governor Kim Reynolds signed a law last year to allow 16 and 17 year olds to work unsupervised in child care centers earlier this month a state legislature approved a bill to allow teens 16 and 17 to serve alcohol and restaurants, Republicans dropped provisions from a version of the bill that would have allowed children 14 and 15 to work in dangerous fields like mining, logging and meat packing. The U.S. Government Attack on Crypto Certainly Seems Coordinated

"When we look back at what this week was about. There are a number of possibilities. It could be the week that binance was sued by the CFTC. It might be the week that do Kwan was arrested. But I think one of the contenders certainly is that this was the week that Elizabeth Warren, a U.S. senator openly declared war on crypto. What do I mean by that? Well, senator Warren took an article headline from February, which read Elizabeth Warren is building an anti crypto army and put it front and center in her fundraising materials for her reelection campaign. The phrase they used was literally anti crypto army. If that doesn't seem like a declaration of war, I just don't know what does. Which brings us to this week's long read Sunday piece. It's by the coin desk editorial team, specifically Kevin Reynolds, and is called it sure looks like the U.S. is trying to kill crypto. The subheading is the federal government's recent actions against crypto are rightly or wrongly, widely perceived as a coordinated attempt to maim digital assets. This risks sending a vital industry overseas without actually protecting investors. Now, as you'll see, what makes this a little bit different from other coin desk pieces is that this is not just the opinion of one author, but instead is presented as the editorial position of the coin desk staff itself. As I mentioned, it's written by Kevin Reynolds coin desks editor in chief. When walking my dogs, I often run into a septuagenarian named Harry, not his real name, a former New York City detective who each morning feeds a colony of stray cats at a nearby golf course. We've bonded over animals, but that's where the touchy feely part of Harry starts and ends. His worldview includes belief in several QAnon conspiracy theories, and that another American Civil War is around the corner. He's been waiting for the quote unquote signal. Sometimes I engage with Harry, other times I just listen. Sometimes we talk about cryptocurrency while he says hello to the pups. A couple of days ago, I told him it's been a rough stretch for the sector, with a banking crisis and government pressure ramping up fast. He responded quickly. Did you really think that central banks and governments would allow a competitor to Fiat money to exist? That stopped me cold. Here he was spouting a conspiracy theory that I'd been finding increasingly hard to argue against. Over the course of just a few weeks, it is becoming increasingly easy to believe. Rightly or wrongly, that in its understandable desire to do something in the wake of the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, the regulatory and administrative state of the United States of America is trying to kneecap if not out and out neuter. On Norman hall, Iowa Republican governor Kim Reynolds signed the two laws into effect. They are the lightest submit of flood of legislation nationwide targeting the trans community, the new law bands transgender students from using public school restrooms that align with their gender identity. Meanwhile, the new ban on gender affirming care gives doctors 6 months to cease prescribing puberty blockers and cross sex hormones to their patients under 18. They are also prohibited from conducting gender affirming surgeries, which Iowa doctors say are already rare. The question remains of who might be his running mate, a shadow contest is underway with Republicans openly jockeying to position themselves as potential running mates with Donald Trump. Trump spoke during a swing through Iowa on Monday. We're going to have a lot of great choices for vice president. We're going to pick a great one. Three women who have been mentioned as possible contenders include representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, at least stefanik of New York, and news anchor turned failed Arizona gubernatorial candidate Carrie Lake, who kissed a portrait of Trump that was placed on stage at the conservative political action conference this month. I don't know about you, but I say we spend every single day from here going forward striving to make America great again. According to people who have spoken to Trump, he's in no rush to make a decision, but allies say he is looking for someone who is unabashedly loyal. What the Silvergate Death Spiral Means for the Crypto Industry

"So today we're going to dig into not only why silvergate is crashing, but how it got to this point, and what its death spiral means for the industry. Let's start at the beginning. Silvergate bank is a medium sized crypto friendly bank based in California. For most of its 30 year history, silvergate was a tiny community bank focused on financing smaller real estate deals. It had only three branches and less than $1 billion in bank assets. In 2016, under the leadership of CEO Alan lane, the bank pivoted to providing banking services to crypto firms. Ben Reynolds silvergate president, who is hired to oversee this change in business strategy said, we need to deposit an Allen started seeing that companies like coinbase were getting kicked out of banks. So the idea was, if we can bank coinbase, we can find deposits. Allen went to the Federal Reserve and said we want to provide basic banking services to Bitcoin companies and they said okay. Over the next 6 years, silvergate downsized its existing business banking and real estate teams to lean heavily into crypto. In 2016, the bank had only 20 crypto clients, including paxos and bit fury, but this number grew to over 1000. This rapid expansion in dealing with the early crypto industry came with a large increase in compliance risk and overhead. According to anonymous sources speaking with Financial Times, silvergate had to hire twice as many compliance staff as comparable banks of its size. Waiting times for compliance checks on new customers ballooned out to 6 months. One of FT's sources said quote, when they got into it, crypto was this little new thing, and I think they didn't realize it would take off as fast as it did. So then they put all their chips in that direction, it ran away from them, it got very big very quickly. Now part of the reason that silvergate were able to achieve such a prominent position in the crypto ecosystem was the launch of their silvergate exchange network or sen in 2017. Said enabled crypto firms to immediately transfer U.S. dollars to other account holders at silvergate, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Funds would be cleared near instantly and could be used immediately. While this feature might not have an obvious use case for the average retail trader, for large crypto funds this opened up the possibility of conducting arbitrage trades across exchanges at a much faster speed, while also allowing funds held on exchanges to be topped up after hours or on weekends.

The Case for School Choice

"Now, Corey, I think it's been a revolutionary two years for school choice. Can you tell us what has happened? I think it began in Florida and West Virginia. It has spread to other systems, Arizona has gone in whole hog. Can you give us the overview of where we are on school choice? Yeah, it's been a banner couple of years for school choice, and it's all the teachers unions own doing. I mean, they just keep stepping in and over and over again. They pushed and lobbied the CDC to keep the schools closed despite Randy weingarten trying to rewrite history, which, by the way, a couple of months ago, I woke up on a Monday morning, probably around this time or a little earlier. And I thought I was reading it Babylon B headline, but instead it was a tweet from her in Ukraine saying that she was there at the front lines to assess the situation. What the heck was she doing in Ukraine? What was she going to do? Make the war go remote, like she did with our schools. But look, because they fought to keep the schools close, parents got to see what was going on in the classroom. And they started to see that they're sending their kids to institutions where they feel like their kids are being brainwashed for 13 years to hate them. So look, bode bakam said it best. We can not continue sending our children to Caesar for their education and be surprised when they come home as Romans, while the parents are no longer surprised. They've woken up and in 2021, we had the best year for school choice in U.S. history, 19 states expanding programs to fund students as opposed to systems, 2022, Arizona going all in with governor ducey and their one seat majority Republican legislature of empowering every single-family regardless of income to choose the school that works best for them, whether it's public private charter or home based education, and then in 2023, this is shaping up to be another record setting year. We had Iowa governor Reynolds passing a universal school assigning him to law last week at universal school choice program and also governor Cox in Utah just on Saturday signing into another universal school choice initiative. So over time, throughout the past few decades, there have been incremental reforms of slightly expanding school choice to disadvantaged populations and then Arizona being the first one to be the first government school monopoly domino to fall. West Virginia as well in the past couple of years. Now we're seeing these big proposals all across the country in red states. It's looking like a universal school choice revolution has ignited. "There's a gentleman by the name of George Freeman And a site called GPS or geopolitical futures dot com I was unaware of it I saw it on independent Glenn Reynolds great sight and Glenn Reynolds is a great guy And the gentleman writes in part as we consider how the war in Ukraine will end We must first understand how it began Russia invaded the geostrategic for geostrategic reasons having Ukraine as a buffer state safeguards Moscow from invasion from the west and for economic reasons which have often gone overlooked The transition from the Soviet Union to the Russian Federation wasn't exactly lucrative It may have increased total wealth by Russia remains a poor country Its gross domestic product ranks just behind South Korea A respectable placement but hardly wears superpowers should be in terms of per CAPiTA GDP Russia ranks 85th Nestled between Bulgarian Malaysia Economic statistics rarely tell the whole story of course but in Russia's case they fairly accurately present a country that is poor than it appears mass superficially by a top layer of the super rich elite Life and major cities like saints St. Petersburg and Moscow is luxurious for the wealthy and bearable for the rest Life in the countryside is something else entirely Individual regimes can't be solely blamed for Russian poverty The size of the nation the difficulties in areas such as transport associated with its side make Russia difficult to govern And from the time of the tsars it's been the state rather than Sheridan economic prosperity that has kept Russia together Often this has been achieved through the security services which are tasked with maintaining state power not with building an economy It's a little wonder that the country that boasted the apron also produced a president who cut his teeth in the KGB

Do Yourself a Favor and Watch 'Fandango'

"Earlier yesterday I was thinking about movies that I love that aren't mentioned a lot. I made sure to count the film that a young Kevin Costner started and it's a movie named Fandango. This is one of those crazy things in my life. I think a Fandango the next guy got next day Gary brooker dies. And then I got a story about me and Debbie and Ivan the bushes. But Fandango is a movie 1985, kind of a comedy, it was originally a student film made by a guy named Kevin Reynolds. It was a parody of Greek life that is Alma mater of Baylor university, but because his father was the president in Baylor, he didn't want to portray the institution in an unfavorable light and he made believe it was about the University of Texas and the film is now a cult classic. If you haven't seen Fandango, try to find it, Steven Spielberg saw the film and he helped fund a feature length comedy about 5 college students from Texas in 1971 who go on a last road trip together. That's what Fandango's about. And celebrate the privilege of youth. And if I didn't just describe what I had in the bushes with Debbie and Yvonne, if that's not the privilege of views, I don't know what is. And these guys go off and face graduation, marriage, the draft of the Vietnam War. It's very poignant. So do yourself a favor. Find that film, it's really sweet and beautiful. And I mean, what film strong a young Kevin Costner isn't. But it is a real magical film. It's a real sleeper.

"By the end of christmas. There was a full major seen on this side and then a full decorated christmas tree. Oh that's cute. And i really liked it because it literally combined the two. You know you'd christmas tree and like the presence and the ornaments and then over here. You had the major scene and on on august we are not in august december. Twenty fifth You would pull out baby. Jesus and in the most christ like ways we always fought over. Who got to pull up. Maybe jesus so every year my dad had to count back because there are three of us and figure out who should start so that was a different person each year that got to pull baby jesus committed to he was keeping the fight keeping the peace. Nope you got to pull out. Jesus last week or last year two brothers turn so. That's what we did. And it reminded us of like crispy and christmas but also having fun and keeping some of those cultural traditions alive so one of the things that we have here on. Our table is the advent wreath now. I created this one with stuff from the dollar store. And because we don't have one in our home and i'm excited to do this with my boys. I don't know that. I'm the stick with this because this white stuff makes a huge mess. Yeah that fake snow covered. Greenery will. We'll do it's really pretty but it makes mess. But basically what i did. I created a wreath out of pine garland and then i placed some white flowers among that white snow branches. And then i put five little candleholders now. Advent reese will different depending on your tradition or depending on where you get them from. Sometimes they will have four candles and sometimes they will have five traditionally. The candles actually have colors. The you'll have for week one. Two and and four they will be purple or blue depending on. If you're protestant tradition or catholic tradition and then week three will be a candle and that is the joy week that's where the advent switches from a remembrance of prophecy and what's been promised to the joy of what is or who is coming right. So isn't that third week and then some advent rates include a fifth candle. That's lit either on christmas day or on christmas eve. And that is the jesus candle so it will depend on your tradition It will depend on where you buy it from or if you create your own and there are some really cute avenue online as far as pictures. Did you see any that you liked. Did some of them were not even a wreath. It was just a straight line and they had put these beautiful mason jars with each word on the jar so they had the hope. Joy love peace on the jars and it was just really striking looked really cute and farmhouse so again..

But prior to that he was an all American fullback at USC, and it was his performance in a win over a predominantly white Alabama team in 1970. That prompted Bear Bryant to integrate the sport further in the South. Sam Cunningham was 71 Steelers heading to their week one match up in Buffalo and still talking with linebacker TJ Watt. Mike Tomlin, using the word optimistic about what's possible availability this week. Team does have some long standing policies, but earlier on ESPN radio on Freddie and Fitzsimmons, I'm tired. You've got eliminate 20th century thinking and get with the Taj in the 21st century, And it's not as if the T. J. Watt has done this before. He's not trying to cause a stink, but he has. He believes he should be fairly compensated and he has a point there. If you're the Pittsburgh Steelers, why would you hold down on him and send that kind of mess in the locker room? It's not about messing with a guy's money. It's about making sure he gets what's fair before the market value goes up. And then you won't even try to afford him. If you are the Pittsburgh Steelers Steelers on the road against the bills this week, Bucks and Cowboys, of course, opening the season tomorrow in Tampa, Freddie Coleman, noting that T J Watt Isn't trying to make a stink. "Miles. So but what's interesting. Is the day that she went missing. We do know that trista passed through that town before she got a call stating that. Her daughter was missing. Well passed through. The town is one way of saying it. Yes the the other thing is driving the freeway and passing the exit. Never having stopped off in the town itself is another way of saying it as well. And i think that's a better way of saying i believe i think too. I think the two things are completely different and paint a very different picture. Right if you're on the freeway and you just pass the exit. Well that's one thing but if you got off the freeway it's there's no need to go through waterville on your way to your destination right but if you do well then things look a lot different and maybe that seed that justin was trying to plant is the correct seed and he has it right the entire time what you could also see in this case at this time in our timeline line via the national media coverage early on is that everyone could see the obvious differences in how each of these parents were handling the situation. Justin is refusing to grant interviews with the media. But on the other hand trista she goes on a media blitz appearing on nancy grace. Good morning america and other news shows on the twenty third of december trista appeared on. Nbc's today show and said that she blamed justin for not keeping ayla safe on the twenty nine. She appeared on the today. Show again asking just into. Please talk to her and tell her what happened. Justin was starting to really look like he was hiding something at this point with her going out and playing through the media to get some answers from him about what could have happened that night yet. Traffic kept claiming again. How well does she even know justin. I mean because they they just had a one night stand and then they ended up having a child together but she claims that she could tell in his eyes that he wanted to tell her something that he wanted that he had some answers that he wanted to basically confess to her well. I don't know if it was pressure or not but justin and his mom phoebe and his brother lance he. Buffet sat down with the main morning. Sentinel and this was to dispel rumors that there was a party. Okay so there was a rumor going around that there was a big large scale party at the pierre home. On friday december sixteenth that being the night that was last seen they come forward and say there was no party at our house at night then in a weird turn of events phoebe. Petro appeared on cnn. Saying that on the night ayla vanished. This is one of the several weird things in this case. This is one that stands out to me. Phoebe dipietro is on cnn. Saying that on the night ayla vanished. She did not hear anything happening in her home. The next day she appeared again on the news network to clarify that she was not actually in the home that night. She was at home the entire evening. She says she couldn't have heard anything. Obviously because if we're to believe her she wasn't even present which seemed to go along with what the other three adults were telling investigators from even their early interviews. I look at this thing. And i go okay. This is a bit confusing. But i think it might be a situation where she may have just misspoke or said something in a certain way that she didn't realize until later kind of implied that she was home that night when in fact she wasn't right. Justin also appeared on the today show and this is where he stating. I'm here to help in any way. I can buy coming on the show. It's in hopes of reaching out to the person that does have my daughter to let them know that what you're doing isn't right. You may think what you're doing is right for ayla but it's not you have no right. You're not her parent. She belongs home with her family. On the sixth of january justin felt the need to explain is broken arm which was of course of interest to the general public. And i'm sure of interest to the investigators working the case as well and he says that that was completely accidental. I would never harm my daughter. He said he had taken ayla to a grocery store with him. On a rainy night in november he was carrying her remember. She i mean she very small. She's twenty months old. He's carrying her under one arm into the home while carrying groceries in the other arm and he says i usually would let her walk but it was raining out that night and it was dark so i carried her. He said he walked into this side of the house and climbed the short stairway to the kitchen area and says i came up the stairs and slipped. It happened so fast. I don't know exactly how i fell on her. But i fell on her and phoebe. His mother backs up the story. Saying i was sitting in the living room with my daughter and we heard a big thump. I immediately went to the kitchen and ayla was scared. So i so i picked her up. The family said that ayla was fussy after justin fell on her but it was not until well into the next day before they decided that the swelling in her arm warranted a trip to the emergency room just was worried about his daughter. He said so. He left a commercial driver's license course at lawrence adult education and fairfield. This was a class that he had signed up for. He left that class early and took his daughter to the hospital to zero said. Some people have suggested that he didn't take ayla to the hospital immediately because he may have been intoxicated at the time. He said that's untrue. I don't know captain. I don't know that we have definitive answers here on if this was a accident if it was something else if it was anything other than an accident. Did he delay taking her to the hospital. I don't know that you can fault. Somebody in every scenario if they are not quick to take somebody to the hospital right. I mean how many i understand that. She's a very little girl but how many of us have rolled an ankle or had an accident and had some type of injury and we don't decide for ourselves for the sake of our own health until twenty four hours later. I better get this looked at. I don't know how much blame there is to pass around here. It is certainly something to consider in to look at because look kids. Don't go missing every day and here. We have a scenario where we have a very small child who does go missing. And she happens to have a cast on her arm at that time ball again. I think the big thing here is that law enforcement go from. We have a missing child to. We have a missing child where.

"This rehab program since trista since trista got out of rehab. She lived in portland with her family with no address of her own now. We should point out here. That portland is about seventy five miles away from waterville when arrived at the waterville police station on that saturday. She was interviewed for two hours by detective. David karen who was no doubt aware that child of broken marriages or no relationship at all are often the subject of custody. Disputes and the victims of non-custodial parent. Abductions trista told keirin the detective that she had last seen ayla on november twenty first so this is more than three weeks earlier. She had spoken to her on the phone on december eighth. Now what's even more interesting in that situation as it tries to had filed for custody of ayla on december fifteenth right. We said there was no formalized who gets who win version of this parenting and where ayla is to go. So according to this information trista filed for custody of her daughter on december fifteenth. That's the day before she was missing. She comes up missing. According to central maine quote. Trista reynolds filed a complaint against a petro justin peach for determination of paternity paternal rights and responsibilities. Child support according to documents. Obtained from the cumberland county superior court in portland and quote when trista had entered the ten day rehab program. Her mother becca and sister jessica. They took ayla in but while she was away. Child welfare services placed ehlo with justin. The child's father ayla been living with him for fifty nine days so five nine days when little ayla vanished is very important for especially a situation like this where they're not going to get married. They're not in a relationship where you set up boundaries and rules and the custody issues through the court system because what it seems to happen as she was obviously in a situation that she wanted to get help and try to get her life back on track so then she said okay. Well mom i'll have my mom and sister watch her. I trust them and then here comes a situation where there is no laws in place or no rules in place and he can then say look. It's i right or refusal so he could then take the child there. There's a lot of times where this stuff happens. Where especially you know. These fathers that are not that involved. They posture by doing this all. You're not around so now. I'm going to take in My child and i don't even think this is going by what justin wanted but more so what his mother wanted him to do. And this seems like a weird situation to me i. I know this happens all the time you know. There's a lot of great situations. great parents. Kids have wonderful time growing up situations out there that are similar to this but what is odd about it to me. Something that i just have. No experience with is. It's a little weird that you are a parent of this daughter but the other parent you don't technically you don't really know them very well. Now do you. I mean there was no real relationship right so it wasn't like they're shown up to family parties. Yeah you or opening up christmas gift. You don't know the grandparents that well you don't know the the father of your daughters You don't know his friends very well things like that. It seems a very weird for me. It's something i can't really wrap my head around too much or that's why there needs to be more education for women based on their cycles and and also just more. Don't forget about the dumb guys out there. Well now that's right. I mean gotta again the whole idea though dumb guys the whole idea that we're surprised now. Was there any birth control. Use a to the guy wear a condom. Wh why are you so surprised by this pregnancy. I don't know the details of that I don't don't really why they're surprised because of ignorance in immaturity so the key thing here captain is little. Ayla had been living with justin. Do peter for fifty nine days when she disappeared. The papers. that trista filed war an attempt to get her back so trista told the detectives that she injust and were not on speaking terms at that point and that he refused to put ayla on the phone when trista call to talk to her daughter on december eleven however trista also told abc news. That just did not know that. She filed the papers that would restrict his access to ayla reynolds. So this is very interesting because when you see something like this and we've seen custody battles in the past and other cases where somebody files something with the core and magically the next day. The kids are hard to get hold of. They vanished they disappear or dad took them states away. We've seen that before. But we have trista in her own words saying look. It's easy to make that leap that this happened. Because i filed these papers however he didn't know that i filed these papers so justin would have been unaware of this information at that time again. We're assuming he didn't know or didn't hear through the grapevine. We don't know exactly what her state is at this moment and i'm talking about the mother because like we said she entered rehab. She then rehab. It didn't seem like she was clean at this point again. That's something that. I have no knowledge of while. That's what i'm saying is i. I'm saying if we can assume that she left rehab before the treatment was fully established. We can just assume that she's not completely sober at this point. That's something again that i don't know anything about. I don't have any reason or couldn't find any reason to doubt what her belief was. That justin was unaware that she had filed these papers right now. This is going to. That's pretty much the early part of the interview with trista and information that detectives are able to get from her. It seems like they were somewhat comfortable with believing that trista didn't have anything to do with taking her own daughter from justin's home so the search for ayla continues so now we need to introduce the f. b. i. card team. You know it's a grad party when they are busting out the acronyms right. So this stands for the federal bureau of investigation's child abduction rapid deployment team kart team which works to recover victims as quickly as possible and helps apprehend those responsible for taking them a brief history. If you will hear captain..

My oldest is tyler. My youngest is jason. Both of them were premature. And my second guy. Jason took me on a little bit more of an adventure than the first one. The first one warmed me up the second one really unleashed this uncertainty on me when we were getting ready to go out of town to a picnic quite a distance away and i had one final appointment with obgyn before we left town and that appointment ended with go straight to the hospital You are in labor to which i could not even fathom. That was the case and ended up in the nick. You or not. In the nick you in the emergency room and with a neonatologist sitting in my ear really to the left of me in my ear literally saying there are three things we can do to try to stop this labor and we're on the second moving into the third right now it may or may not work and if not this was at twenty nine weeks Here's what you could be facing. And fortunately we were able to stop my labor that day. But i had to stay in the hospital which was about an hour or so from home and hang out there until the duration of the now pregnancy and didn't know how long was going to be there and ended up being on bed rest for thirty three days where i could stand up five minutes a day long enough to take a shower and that was it. My connection to the outside world was one tree. I could see out my window. Because it was august. And i hung out there for thirty three days and jason still came six weeks early and there was a lot of adventure in between he ended up in the nick unit because he had apnea and so they had to put him on apnea monitor and we were also looking at making sure. His lung development was healthy and there was a lot going on the backdrop of my life aside from trying not to give birth to this baby too soon.

Bit for about say three months we were on the road and we were out somewhere and someone said something about it. We were like chilling with a friend of yours or something. It's mentioned it and i go. I'm not. I wasn't kidding i go. It's fun i go. I think it's done now though. This is three years ago. I was like. I think we've finally like our good on it and and here we are. Yeah so later. There's a comedy thing where something starts out. Rule of five hundred funny and then we'll keep doing it's not funny and then it just gets irritating and then and then people on the other and then it gets crazy and then it gets funny again and then it gets not funny and then people get sad and then. I'm not sure where we flow. Slow death of the soul and then it gets funny and then it gets hilarious like and then it's just i don't. I don't know what's happening anymore. And then atlanta lake certainly. Does this person need mental health help. That's why we are. Yeah yeah this is a. This is a cry for help america. How do you not seen that. I've been just desperately begging for some sort of help like this is a cry like this is a desperate. You know what you're like. You're like michael. Douglas and falling down. If he just didn't like fully like if he he was just like. I'm going to slowly take it out on society instead of just having one crazy day breakfast lunch time in this fast food restaurant. How much better that movie. You've been if everyone just call them. Doug oh doug oh god that was actually what it was called australia..

"This is corey reynolds. And i'm here with chris gordon on hell blazer bids Hey everyone at in. I'll be talking to the amazing as seen corey. Reynolds currently showed in resident alien is sheriff thompson. Who said a really really long sentence accessible spend on the closer as well. I recall the intro originally because we just go straight into the conversation so please sit back and enjoy this amazing amazing chart with corey rental home. Sports resident aliens rallied. She slapped on my boss enjoy. It's a fun show it's it's you know it's it. It took us a while to to actually to to to get it from the pilot to the screen. We shot the pilot in october of two thousand eighteen so it was quite while Getting the entire season. I think second season will move a little faster. Obviously but but yeah. It was quite quite quite the journey. We felt like we were kind of like the little show. That could definitely get into this as the little show that could hit the world by storm. I think it's i've been cry. I'm gonna solving crimes are in. Have i mean allen lights onto is oliver mentally and you'll car. It's just hilarious. Throw allen is It's it's hard to do seems with allen because he's so funny like there's one person my My deputy liz elizabeth bowen. She's very funny as well. she can break me too. But alan is a whole nother level man levi as well levi's another one that The mayor mayor been he. He he breaks me alive. You know But alan is uniquely suited for this role. I mean it's it's It's amazing what he's done with. Harry harry's a really really Funny funny funny character. Yeah astronauts With chris i mean facial expressions. You're right about the rights. Asia expressions eases allen has rolling and and even when he's sleep and his alter ego says yeah facial expressions. But it's my god is just funny. It's got to be a unique thing to be playing in alien pretending to be a human because there's so many layers to the performance. You have the First of all the alien mindset. Which i love. I think i think the way the show is constructed as well Utilizing the voice over to get inside harry's mind so you have these moments where what he's doing in. The moment is in direct contrast to what he's thinking and then watching allen portray that line between trying to be a the human in front of the humans while at the same time Not being able to completely remove himself from his mission his thinking and the alien component. You know what i mean. He's is amazing. Dirties allen's topnotch esprit. Nothing episode blessed episode were represents three so the suit me up carbon below boys number here most. His mother's just laughed and she can ask mexico's. I'm gonna get you judas. great. Yeah i'm gonna kill it. Gives us both know. There's another around that scene. There's two moments in that episode. Really really to me so moments. But they're just so funny in their testament to allen is in that scene where meredith When she goes in and she's Talking to allen. Or or you know to to to harry and she goes you know maxed. My son told me you were an alien. And harry has this long pause and then he's like what's that been like this really kind of and i mean that that floors me every time and in the very next scene with max in harry when he calls max and asshole at the end and he was like kind of comes like that..

Well i'm going to read what you wrote regarding some of the questions i asked prior to this conversation and we'll just launch from there so you indicated that you're lost in doing something that appeared incredible on the surface but it left you lonely unfulfilled and without a sense of purpose and then god gently guided you into profession where you knew you were partnering with him. I love that and you able to reveal him through his unique design of you. Could you share what you were doing. Previously that left you feeling lonely and unfulfilled. Oh my goodness great stuff. Yeah absolutely can so essentially what happened is. I've been an entrepreneur for over ten years now probably about fifteen and i was in several ventures and we had incredible favor so we would have money basically like blank checks to do things that we wanted to do. And that's of course every entrepreneurs dream has. Here's the money. Go build whatever you want. So i was trying to. I was trying to build really cool empires or castles but essentially just out of matchsticks because we were interviewing these great individuals that had done phenomenal things and essentially. I was the interviewer for them. And we'd go to these comper doesn't events and get in front of really powerful often christian people and interview them and then kinda offer that as content the world so it sounds like this ideal situation just wonderful have money to travel and the funny thing is very unfulfilling. And it's very disappointing when you have a blank check to create the life that you want and it's still not the life that you want. Wow so i did that for several years and was constantly frustrated. I told people before. I always heard that term. When you're doing what you're not supposed to do. It's like running through mud when you're doing what you're called to do. It's like water skiing and that used to frustrate me. Because i knew i was the guy mud. I was just totally aware. I'm the guy running through mud. But i don't know how to get out of it. And then god very gently nudged me with one of our products and basically he said. I'm going to let you offer either life consulting session or a business consulting session as part of the products that we're offering in one person shows the life insulting session..
