"8 30 a.m. in Hong Kong and here in Singapore I'm Juliette Sully And I'm Brian Curtis training is underway in some key markets around the region We are selling off a little bit today A lot of that tied to also some pretty heavy selling on Wall Street We'll get details from Doug prisoner coming up in a few moments But for now some of the top stories of the hour And fed governor lael brainard has called the task of reducing inflation pressures paramount She says the fed will raise interest rates steadily while shrinking its balance sheet rapidly reynard says this could happen as soon as next month Later in the day we heard from the Kansas City fed president Esther George who told us current economic conditions support the move When you look today at where the balance sheet is and the conditions in which we'll be doing that I think it easily argues for going faster and moving along at a quicker pace than we did before We have a ways to go to get this accommodation out of the economy George also said a half point hike will be on the table at the feds may meeting Tomorrow we'll get minutes of the last fed meeting and more clues on the path of tightening Well the wait times for a semiconductor deliveries rose slightly in March and reached a new high lead times refers to the lag between when a chip is ordered and delivered It increased by two days to 26.6 weeks last month That's according to research by Susquehanna financial There are a number of contributors to the prolonged delay the war in Ukraine lockdowns in China and also an earthquake in Japan Susquehanna said these factors had a short term impact in the first quarter and they may have lingering effects on the supply chain all throughout the year Well Twitter has named Elon Musk to its board the news coming a day after must disclose that he'd become the social media platform's largest shareholder Bloomberg's mandip Singh tells us what this appointment means for Twitter Elon Musk we know is a visionary He's going to put out ideas He's going to want Twitter to deliver on things when it comes to the product side of the equation And if the current management can't execute on it now he has a seat at the table.

"In fact big tech at the hit we may be seeing more hawkish tone as we see fed chair Powell remain in place when he felt library to some extent be more of a dovish voice growth stocks therefore take the hit but the banks they like it at 1.8% Still no news on what sort of bank supervision who will head that part of the Federal Reserve remember still three more seats to fill but the KBW bank index at 1.8% largely because we didn't see yields pushed so much higher That as we expect perhaps while rate hike as soon as June 2022 gold futures they fall down 2.4% as inflation could be tamed somewhat quicker than the market had previously anticipated And Bitcoin 56,000 off of its highs not proving much of an inflation hedge in the eye of the investor more of a risk asset It was down on the day S&P 500 falls from its record high down three tenths of a percent as we see some of the key tech names under pressure And we see the two year yield key moves there as we see in auction that's had some soft demand overall the remote dollar index continuing to rally up some four tenths of a percent Emerging markets feels the brunt of that Meanwhile of course I do indeed want to welcome our Bloomberg television and radio audiences as we head to Washington where we're joined by Bloomberg's sound on anchor Joe Matthew was great to have him And democratic senator Mark Warner to chew on the news that we got today of course finally the announcement the Federal Reserve will remain helmed by fed chair Powell but coming in as vice chair Lil reynard We're still waiting to hear who will be nominated for the three remaining seats over at the Federal Reserve But senator first and foremost your reaction to the picks Well I think it was great news I think in Jay Powell we not only have continuity We have someone that the markets are comfortable with We have someone that both Democrats and Republicans alike respect I think you will be overwhelmingly reconfirmed as chair And in a Leo brainer as one of the vice chairs again we've got a known quantity very very strong credentials on the democratic side I think it's a great one to punch Senator I wonder as someone who will be among the first to vote on these picks through your role on the finance committee if you agree with the administration when it comes to its baseline argument on inflation Is it transitory or will prices continue to rise through next year Well I think we've all been a bit surprised at how big the inflation bump has been although we're obviously in uncharted territory we've never gone through a complete economic shutdown and how long it's taking to get the economy reopened I think we have seen certain blips that have been transitory I point the lumber earlier in the year how high the cost went up and they started to come down I'm starting to hear some better things in terms of shipping and hopefully that will come down But I do hope my advice to the fed chair will be that I hope we can see a little bit of tapering and maybe that moving a little bit faster than earlier in terms of the fed's acquisition of expanding its balance sheet But we again this is uncharted territory so I generally agree it's transitory but I also tend to believe that could be for the short term at least all of the next 60 90 days getting into the holiday season It could get a little bit worse before it gets better Subtitle one of course your democratic colleague Elizabeth Warren was also perhaps less jubilant about the continuity coming from Jay Powell Her worry has of course been the oversight of Wall Street No brainer and many felt would perhaps be more tough in that respect but we're still waiting to fill three other seats at the Federal Reserve most notably the supervisory role when it comes to the banks What do you expect from the role of the Federal Reserve there Or indeed the other administration appointees who have yet to be confirmed Well I'm anxious for the administration to move a bit quicker on its other nominees particularly the regulatory supervision I appreciate why I've not always agreed with that Randy corals I did appreciate the fact that he's been willing to kind of move on to give the president more flexibility I'm not sure I agree with all my colleagues that we've seen this any kind of dramatic relaxation particularly on the largest institutions I think the basic framework we put forward in dod Frank has stood its test of time Obviously we've gone through a pandemic and a complete economic shutdown and while many parts of the economy suffered the financial sector did not take the kind of hits that if we hadn't put the kind of capital reserves in place out of Dodd Frank So I would give the sector while there may be individual areas I would have done differently but I think I would give it a very passing grade And I think candidly a lot of that was due to the reforms after the last financial crisis So that President Biden today enrolling out his pick said that chair Powell assuming that he will be renominated or reconfirmed I should say will make climate change an issue will acknowledge and try to mitigate the impact of climate change Knowing that it doesn't Republican senators sent a letter to chair Powell last summer Essentially criticizing the fed for changing its tone and mission here Do you believe that that would be the case What would that mean for the mission of the Central Bank Well I don't know any sophisticated investor that doesn't think taking in to consideration Some of the hidden costs that are being brought about by climate change We need to have those cost factored into the system We need to have more visibility We just went through a year where a third of America couldn't go outside during the summer because of forest fires another third and the south were constantly besieged by hurricanes And we had more deaths frankly and flooding in New York in basements than we even had from the hurricane So the notion that we could ignore climate Again I don't know any sophisticated investor that doesn't think this should be high I believe not only on the fed but I think on all central banks agenda It's interesting of course there's plenty of worry when it comes to the energy crisis That dovetails nicely into the consideration of the climate as well We have been seeing gas prices spike significantly over in Europe much of that coming at We see tensions rise between Russia and Europe whether it comes to Nordstrom two also when we see of course a buildup of troops we understand being reported at the border of the Ukraine that's affecting the corn market as well today from your perspective senator is enough being done in the relationship that geopolitical relationship between the U.S. and Russia at this that moment Well I also happen to be the chairman of the intelligence committee And the one thing we are sure of is that Vladimir Putin likes to stir the pot and his overarching goal is not only Vis-à-vis America but these would be NATO to try to keep us off balance Obviously he has a historic view about Ukraine that the vast majority of Ukrainians don't share I think the one thing that unites Ukrainians whether they are in the west or even in the DOM bass and some of the eastern.

"Now much of the equity market traded higher through most of the day until the final moments of the session when the S&P went negative it should call it a bearish reversal Remember it's a holiday shortened week Now that spike up in rates triggered declines in communication services and information tech stocks and that sent the NASDAQ composite down about 1.3% The S&P down three tenths of 1% today although the Dow did hold onto a gain of about a tenth of 1% We had bank stocks move higher with the KBW bank index up 1.8% today And energy shares advanced as the price of crude oil rose WTI right now 76 75 OPEC may reconsider its plan to add supply next month if consuming nations go through with a coordinated release of strategic petroleum reserves a much stronger dollar with a Bloomberg "Surprising calls on them as well. I thought that you know, despite it all guys show some show some poise and they actually locked in toward the end. It didn't allow the early files to discourage him. Avery came in after being on the bench for a while. It was still aggressive. Got a great steel got a big defensive play. Got a great rebound toward down the toward down the and stretch, so I thought I'd guys play well. Tonio didn't shoot the ball too well today. But he still was talking. He had a real big block on the baseline down there on their in. I just thought our guys play well, um so brave and show some poise kind of Was a little hesitant toward the end. We wanted them to be a little more aggressive, but you know, we put it up. Well, I would say That's a great point about Brown because I want to mention a really heavy thing you did at the end of the game there. First of all, I can't believe Grande Valley didn't foul there when we had the ball with 35 seconds left, and there's only a five second differential, but he did a great job of just kind of hold The ball in there half corner with one second on the shot clock launched the shot. At that point, it's better if you're missing is the ball's gonna bounce around like it did in the classical run out. First of all, I don't want you. Obviously, that may be coming on the coaching decision there. But what a heady player was by Braille in there just the Dribble out the shot clock in this launch. One and pretty much expired the rest of game clock. Yeah, I wish we were that smart and call that top. I'm going to give her your credit. Tony tried to drive and he lost it a little bit. Eight seconds left. But you're absolutely right and then killing able to keep it alive. That was huge. Keanu unable to get his hands on that on that on that tip after brain and launches it up, So I just thought it was a collective effort. It was a really tough game. You know, Every time you come here, you have to be prepared to engage in contact. Every time down the floor. They do a great job of going to the offensive glass. They run their stuff. They're gonna put you on ball screens, So it was a physical. It was a well fought battle. How many big shots did the Reynard had today? I mean, it seemed like he was open in the corner a few times and one of the end of the half of tired and then a couple of big ones. In the second half, he had 13 points, but just inefficient offensive game and It seems like and yet he's still making a few freshman mistakes out there. But I'll tell you what. He seems to be growing every single game out there for you guys. Yeah, that's one thing that was a good thing about him. He actually listens, and he tries to tries to get better. The things that you teach him. So he's going to try to do exactly what you tell them, and most of the time when he does making mistakes is because he doesn't deviate from what you tried to tell him so on bits, you know, and that's the tough thing about being a player. You know, you have to know when to just kind of be aggressive..

"More than 2700 journalists and analysts and more than 120 countries. I'm someone Fox man. This is Bloomberg. Yes, sir. Thanks. Let's get back to our top story. The Feds first meeting of the year is upon US. Investors are looking for reassurance from Jerome Powell that he won't taper asset purchases anytime soon as the global virus situation continues to worsen. In an acceleration off the vaccine. Roland and prospects off more fiscal stimulus are offering some hope. The I'm F has boosted its forecast for global growth to 5.5%. That's the biggest expansion since 2000 and seven uncredited improvement in the United States for much of the upgrade. We estimate that if you can get to a faster into this health crisis by much more widespread rollout of vaccines and therapies, and we would add $9 Trillion to the global economy between 2020 and 2025 at everybody benefits including the advanced economies who stand to gain $4 trillion around $4 trillion, So this is, you know, very strong economic case. Doing much more now. Mm. Let's get out to Chris Weston. He's the head of research of pepper stone group, Chris. Quite a bit of consensus than around, eh? Staying the course around rates for the Fed. What? What are we going to get in terms of sign posts for the future of the purchase program off the bonds, the repurchase program? Well, I don't think I'm gonna get a lot. Unfortunately, because Feather now under their new average inflation talks in regime that they want to see the wife inflation, either very much evidence based, informal. Reactive than proactive on the many of the years combined. They may start looking at break even on before your five year inflation swamps and start making noises. We know that that stage we saw from the regional state presidents recently talking about being open to 20,021 being a taper. And unless we know where that was sharply, the shut down by the cause. The Fed Reynard pal Andre Clarity say, I think that will be an extension of that situation to reinforce that they're very reactive. Well, The question we need to ask ourselves is when did that language start to change into me, given my stance on global markets on global economics and reflation inflation? I think the language will probably start to change become more nuanced, the more hawkish found sort of the probably April time. You look at what's happening with the yield curve sort of the steepening that's taken place on. You begin to wonder about whether stocks whether equities are gonna face the pull of gravity and there's been a very contentious discussion around froth. Around elevated valuations run me through what the thinking is that pepper stone at the moment around that I think we were tight with We're okay with the Kurds stay thinning, and we believe that the market will continue to rotate and rotation is the key. Islamist Islamist. We're seeing a situation where they were you moving up in politics. The fact that there's not a tape attack untrue. It is really because economic growth is looking good people of closing, you know, are increasing duration bet based on that. On. It's also married up with breakevens getting too probably what I would consider to be a ceiling on tens of about 2 25 already can't see them getting much higher than that, because I think that's when called PC sort of trace about 2%, or at least that perception. But it's almost inflation expectations of moving up concurrently with not knowing. If we do get back into that regime, then I think people will be refraining from buying volatility, and I think it will be in certain sectors that benefit from that. Moment. Then that way, get nominal, get breaks, even hitting that point further and you know we're talking. We're not talking any time soon. But probably halfway through the year we get to a point where 10 year breaks even said to 25 on dominoes continue to go up. Yes, of course, when new Year olds will start moving up, and that has big implications for markets, And, of course, is the rate of change. We look out. But, you know, I think that that my basically write some stage we will see that that's gonna be better with the other thing. The other thing that I'd like you to weigh in on Chris is on. Gamestop. I mean the volatility and Stark is taken everybody by surprise, sort of the power of Reddit and Tic tac out for everybody to see. On. It kind of also raises the bigger question as to whether it represents a systemic risk or whether this is just a fad. And I don't. I don't think it's gonna get represented systemic risk. Um, there will be part of the market who talk about Free markets. I mean, it's an interesting one in yourself, given the state of being blind corporate deaths and And you know, there's a propensity to face the Wall Street's in a lot of people's eyes. But there's no doubt for the first time ever. We've seen the retail trading community acting as a collective unit targeting shorts on, but that may well be considered to the manipulation in itself. A minute ago showed so close and then we get the gamma squeeze which perpetuates the most higher But they have an advantage or least very basic and given a level playing field, and so take that away or to limit that could be seen as a way of for the impending on so called free markets on D N a quality of in financial markets. I'm a bit concerned about that sort of transcends and ultimately what the FCC do. I thought the Fed can't do anything about this macroprudential not trains this little but discovered down to the SEC and it and it seems to me some stage. I might have to be involved. But what does that look like? What does that mean for the free market or perception of free markets? So there's this really fascinating? Definitely. It is. There's a lot to think about it to consider the other front that We're all thinking about are the 60 40 portfolios and whether there's still relevant this day and age I'm going to be able to endure for the next decade ever took his A Q. R. Is once again cut to 60 40 Outlook. Was depressed returns everywhere. Basically, stocks and bonds now seen delivering just 1.4% after inflation. Expectations in 2019 were for 2.9% of last year. It was 2.4%. Hmm. What do you do about that? Does that mean everybody just kept gets pushed out more into equities in these portfolios. Why that might expose. That would be the obvious songs, wouldn't it? But, I mean, I'm lucky. I don't manage people's money. We'll just talk about what's going on. I mean, I wouldn't you know the white having to out perform in this market in the in this year in the backdrops, given that so much of this Future value has been pulled. The president is going to be very tough, and they might have some of the sense that the fixed income side of town is gonna go under before. Which is why, you know, a lot of people would say that if you want to play a reflection in the equity market, you go straight to Japan because The cage funds so overweight jgbs that if we get that re balance, the Nicholas could be outperforming which swine in that state occurred globally. The Nicholas them so well. From that rebalancing trade going forward, But, yeah, I mean, my bass case, unfortunately, afforded the consensus trade, which is scary, but you've got to recognize the scientist, part of the macro trader. Of way you could be wrong and do something about it quickly that I think said in the camp that as Probably from April, not just because of base effects in inflation, but also that the loss of your money I think we're going to see a change of that on guy..

If you don't feel like you're contributing to the team in your corner of the team you get kleiner you get quite in the dressing room. You'll get quieter on the ice.
