WNBA players celebrate Warnock's projected win over Loeffler
"Right. Before the insurrection at the capital there was two senate runoff elections that the country had their is on in one of them. The reverend raphael warnock defeated the incumbent. Appointed senator kelly leffler in georgia. Kelly leffler for about ten years has been a partial owner of the atlanta dream of the wnba. She's now the majority owner but she's been around the team for now ten or eleven years and you may have heard her own players and much of the wnba is diametrically opposed to everything that leffler stands force. It was a very interesting situation to see everything develop earlier this week. And then how it works in the team dynamic for more on that. Let's welcome and renee. Montgomery actually a guard for the atlanta dream. She joins us this morning. She's actually rejoining us this morning a second time. She's been on with this. Good morning to you so i guess the first thing i gotta ask you is being a member of the team and understanding everything. That's going on on the floor in off the floor. What's the reaction of you and your teammates to misled losing this election. So i'm just gonna speak for myself and the reaction is. It's not even just her losing. Its rafael worn off. One and i wanna make sure that the messaging stays clear because there's some things that happened on january six is trying to take away from the fact that a black man is going to send it a jewish man from georgia's going to send it and we won the presidential race so i would say for me. It's a sweep. it's a three no sleep. So the the the feeling is happy. Rene speaking of january six. What are your thoughts on everything that occurred that day. Yeah you know. It's kinda like we all felt something was gonna happen. I was worried after november. Third ominously like when when the number started tied and we could see that joe biden. Really my win this thing you know. We all started to get a little nervous even here in georgia the aquarium shutdown coach color. They all boarded up their their buildings because we were all expecting some type of reaction and not a good one so then to see what happened on january six and see the lack of policing that was there it was it was disappointing and most call a spade a spade. It was terrorism. Domestic terrorism is the term that we should use for that renee montgomery innately. Sorry thanksgiving i was going to say what is say about the platform that the wnba has like you guys like even a month before. Colin kaepernick took a knee in two thousand sixteen. The wnba pre-game conference about police brutality. You guys were black. Lives matters t shirts before it was even a thing. Guys always been the leader at the forefront say about the platform that you guys have in the work that you guys have been doing you know. I hope people start to licking because a lot of brands. A lot of sponsors. They don't see the value in in women would say 'cause you know. I think i saw a tweet. From china robinson that said of sponsorship for women athletics how chow especially now knowing the impact that a women's league not just so a player but a whole week and have i don't understand why there's no interest but i do hope that just seeing how things transpired and how everyone to see what's going on. I hope that there is some value added to women now. Renee montgomery of the atlanta dream is joining us. This morning on keyshawn jay williams zubin were presented by progressive. Insurance and rene is with us on the goodyear hotline to robinson by the way. Espn women's college basketball analyst shaina. Yes shoutout. I want to ask you this because people may not want to go back to leffler because i think this is just so fascinating with how clear she's been in how clear you guys have been She used to be for people. That aren't aware that maybe don't follow the dream on everyday basis. She used to be a constant present. at games. a practice you'd be a team functions. He was always be sitting in the front row. She was very active owner. Obviously things have changed when she went to the senate got other responsibilities. I just wonder what your relationship is with her. The team's relationship with her you know even before the senator race i would just fear before the games. We've been to her house. Where team function. But i mean any of the players know you're not usually best friends with owner in general you know you typically would talk more to your g Even when it comes to contracts and stuff so we did see her there and we would wait and she was you know. I know that she released herself. From you. know day to day duties as she became a senator but she was president and the wnba. I know probably the letter was her trying to distance herself. Thing is how she's republican and the wnba. Is you know highly majority. Lgbt in black and brown community. So i can understand why she's trying to distance ourselves but it wasn't the case beforehand. Rene we're kind of personal discussions if any at all have you had. We'll often about social justice nine. I'm you know this was a typical owner-player relationship. So you know. I never talked to my minnesota on her about social justice. And i know that this time is is different but by the time that all of these things try Started to unfold. You know it was already. She was already too far. gone by. then how do you feel now that everything is transpired and she still co owner of the team for me and this is gonna be unpopular to say but for me. I'm sure she's not the only owner. That probably feels the way she feels. And so i hope that the wnba and hope that you know even her you know i. I've already posed the question. I don't know why he would want to own a wnba team. If you have to write a letter to the commissioner opposing. Everything that that team is standing for you know. Our team is the atlanta dream. And i don't know if people know that's from martin. Luther king's dream speech. That's how we got our name so if you oppose everything that we fundamentally stand for. I don't see how you can build a relationship there. I don't know why you'd want to be there

"What's going on this week. We're recording this on wednesday and there's everybody's talking about today on the time line is is what happened on tuesday night in georgia where the democrats clinched both so the runoff elections and are poised to take control of the senate here in a couple of weeks right now. Reverend raphael warnock has confirmed to us predicted to win. And it's looking looks like asaf is going to win as well so i wanna talk about worn off a little bit because he really falls into the relevant lands interesting ways. We've talked about him before a little bit particularly regarding his opponents of we'll say racist attacks on his character and things that he stands for. But this is also going to be. He's he told. Cnn here wednesday morning that he plans to continue to preaching preaching at his church on sunday mornings. He's going to be pulling double duty as a state senator. And as a pastor it tends to be he's be the pastor at ebenezer church is historically extremely important church in georgia. It's the church. Where martin luther king junior was the pastor. He came across. He's he was on. Morning joe this morning and they asked him about how being a pastor will inform his approach to uniting people in a divided time and he said. Listen if you've ever had to get folks who like anthems and folks who like contemporary gospel music to work together you can do anything. And that's very emblematic of his approach. He's he's extremely open and very vocal about his work in the church and how much that informs his political beliefs. He's very much in the vein of dr king. He's a big proponent expanding voting rights medicaid fighting poverty. He opposes the death penalty. He said he was on cnn. And he said the last thing i want to do is become disconnected from the community and to spend all my time talking to politicians. I might accidentally one. That's why intend to return to the pulpit and preach on sunday mornings so this is going to be new this. He poised become probably the most prominent and visible figure in the black church on the political stage. Right now and That's going to be sort of can be very different. And probably ten of revolutionary for the body. Politic here in the us. I heard that John lewis was a prisoner of of his church and john lewis. Who passed away. You know recently obviously You know known as the conscious of the senate. And i'm wondering if he's going to step into that role kind of be that spiritual voice in the in the halls of power. Yeah that's this will be honest. This the most black pastor.

"Me. So what's the mood like where you are in Georgia today. So the latest really are than the numbers of outstanding ballots that we've gotten from the secretary of state's office and the bulk of those are coming from heavily Democratic counties. And, you know, representative from the Secretary of State's office today projected that are predicted that that Jonah's off the other Democrat in the race that hasn't yet been called, will Widened his lead beyond even the margin that's needed for a recount. So that's that's where things are right now. That's where things are, and I'm sure people are in high anticipation. You know, after the race was called yesterday for Reverend Raphael Warnock, he gave a very moving victory speech, where he described his 82 year old mother picking cotton for someone else and being able to pick or vote for her youngest son. To be a U. S. Senator, He goes on to say this. So I come before you tonight as a man knows that the improbable journey that led me to this place in this historic moment in America. Could only happen here. And for those of us in California. Not as familiar with Senator elect Reverend Raphael Warnock, can you talk about the significance of his victory? It's hugely symbolic, obviously, for for the reasons that that you stayed in that he outlined himself. Reverend Warnock is the pastor of Ebeneezer Baptist Church, which is the home Church of Martin Luther King Jr here in Atlanta. He's held that role for about 15 years and has been a has been a force in that world has been a force of progressive activism from that pulpit. And you know, it's also symbolic. I think toe have a black preacher be senator. It's really remarkable on top of just just the historic nature of him being the first senator of color on I will also say, you know John Ausaf, if he is elected officially would be Georgia's first Jewish senator as well and also the youngest senator in history. Yes, my understanding is the youngest since Joe Biden, Democrat Senator Thank you for correcting me. No, no, It's not a correction. Actually, I just mean sort of the symmetry of that is kind of amazing. Yeah, You're right. It is, Andy. You know, war not did seem to be doing a little bit better throughout the night. Of course, as we've seen since his race is able to be called Sooner, but a little better than Ausaf across the board. Similarly, Purdue doing better than Leffler, Can you talk a little bit about? You know why we saw that outcome and include there was some split ticketing going on there. Yeah, absolutely. It's actually a story of been. I've been kind of chasing down today. I've been reached out trying to get some of these produce Warnock voters to talk to me and I've been hearing from them and you know it's a mixed bag, but You know it's worth noting that Senator Purdue was elected six years ago. He's had six years in office, and he did have you know, identity and identity before Trump While he tied himself very closely to the president, he did have a record to run on. And Senator Leffler, the other Republican. She just has had about a year and she had Challenge from the right early on, and so she was forced to run really? Exactly with the president. She called herself 100% with the president. And so you didn't really have her own identity in a way with voters. There was also, you know, just anecdotally. I'm hearing people who who just didn't really feel She was an authentic candidate. They found her not Believable couldn't relate to her in a way and then the historic nature of Reverend War knocks candidacy. I also think was a factor for voters who who really wanted to see this happen for Georgia to So there was also, of course, highlighted that you know, day of voting Election day. Voting would be especially pivotal for Republicans. It seems like That turnout was low depressed potentially by concerns about concerns raised by the president that the election in Georgia his his loss in Georgia was a result of fraud. Do you do you think that played a role? And what is the conversation around that today in Georgia? I think that is a factor. There's also the factor of just people who who who really didn't like the president. You know, Joe Biden did carry the state very narrowly. But he did. And the senators in November the Republicans in the Senate races outperformed the president. But in these run offs From has basically been on the ballot with two Republican senators on DSA. So so if if you're a voter who voted against President Trump, then you might be feeling that urge might have felt that urge again, But to your point, also about election fraud. I mean, I went to cover President Trump's rally in Dalton, where he did say, you know, Please go vote for David and Kelly. We need you to go vote for David and Kelly but spent most of the time talking about voter fraud that has without providing any evidence that's been dispute. It and debunked. But as I was driving home, I saw a sign on the side of the road and world Georgia that said boycott rigged run off. So it was a confusing message. And so even if they're just a couple 1000 you know people who who held back because of that could've been enough. There were some who suggested that the president should have spent more time attacking John a soft and revenue Raphael Warnock, then say. Governor camp or secretary of state breakfast burger. Is that a sentiment that you hear very much Yeah, yeah. I mean, that's that's kind of the word today of what happened as I'm asking Republicans and the answer is Trump. I mean the election, the voter fraud questioning, of course, but also just You know, it really kind of roiling the ground that Republicans in Georgia have been standing on by targeting his former ally, the governor and by putting pressure on the governor and our secretary of state really violate their oaths of office and overturn an election that's been certified twice. It really didn't do Republicans any favors in these run offs? Well, I'm I heard before I let you go tell us how George is doing Overall, there's been so much attention paid to this state. So much money. So many ads so many people. Howarth, our people feeling right now? Yeah. I mean, I think everybody's just feeling ready for the ads to stop. I'm personally pretty excited to stop having to recycle 10. A dozen mailers every day..

Reverend raphael warnock was leading senator. Kelly leffler by even more then. This big batch of votes came from rural areas. Suddenly the republicans had taken the lead. Just as you were speaking with the race changed again. Now we have senator purdue up by three thousand votes. His just focused on all that you would have with lash blue mirage red mirage. But if you were looking at these specific batches of results and you compare them to the presidential election. A surprising consistent trend was emerging here in county after county. The democrats were doing even better than joe biden happening right before we came on the air. Abc news now projecting that democrat raphael. Warnock will win his race. Yeah the several thousand vote lead over. Gop senator kelly leffler in two races. You would expect to be identical. We have two different updates for you this morning. Abc news kidnap project. That reverend raphael warnock will win his race. He will be the next senator from georgia for at least the next two years but remember. Democrats need to enroll jon. Ossoff has grabbed a lead. We have not projected that race not yet. So let's dig into this with. Abc news political director recline and perry bacon junior a senior writer with our partners at five. Thirty eight rick. You're still on the set where we were doing. Live coverage last night. Why would we project warnock and not ossoff. What are you guys seeing. Well in the case of walk he's got numerical advantage. He's actually leading and so georgia. I am honored by the that you have shown in me. And i promise you this tonight i am going to the senate to work for all of georgia and it gives me jon. Ossoff is just razor thin but there's more than enough vote out there in in predominantly democratic areas That's what democrats are looking at right now that race me be in a recount. Maybe a little more likely than the other race of but as as that vote comes in. We've just we've just seen better and better numbers for the democrat and this may have all of them. We're looking at one point. Two four four million votes which was more than we anticipated. Actually we were looking at today. That's election day votes. It's clear that the turnout was through the roof and it actually happened in both parties. Donald trump was good for public turnout. He's probably good once again for democratic turnout and it was an open question. As to whether voters who elected joe biden would also try to deliver him a senate. We saw a lot of ticket splitters in this state and many other states. Republicans always have advantages in these runoffs particularly in a state. Like georgia of the conventional wisdom coming in is that they look pretty good. Well no not the first time. But i was this time he thought about what are not even turn out. Well yeah. I wondered if my vote really matters but there seem to have been a little bit more backlash than republicans might have might have intended out of this and it's also possible that a few republican state home knowing that the president been railing against election fraud. Hey perry bacon junior. Does that mean what are people voting for one guy and not the other like i would assume you. Just vote for two ds or for to ours right. So how is warnock outperforming. Not just jon ossoff. But even even joe biden so in terms of looks like warnock going to do a little bit better than ossoff in terms of the margin you can. You can come with a lot of things but one thing we know from a lot of research is that people who are elected incumbents do better than people who were appointed to their seats. I thank you from the bottom line heart. We got lots of things to go out but we have some work to do here. This is a game of inches. We're going to win this election. We're going to say contrary. It looks like david perdue is probably a little bit more popular than kelly leffler. That's my guess is the way producing a little bit better. In terms of joe biden versus the democrats. There was a big. You know. I i think rick is right. We probably gonna learn the to. Some voters were turned up at his last couple months of trump's behavior and his contesting election. I also think that we don't know is there was there were there. Were tens of thousands of people who did not vote in the initial election. I have more friends than i've ever had in my in my life. Man my voting career which hasn't been that long outvoting. I mean really. So so when do you think is the democrats in georgia focused on getting swing but they also have made a big push at turning out people in the atlanta area. Finding wounded bone the original election turning out people of color particularly people age. Forty so a lot of the things kinda stacey abrams and other people in democratic politics involved in trying to change georgia in like a ten year period by really trying to organize and push out people in the atlanta area vote. It appears that put them over the top in this race in perry. You're also just a student of political parties in general so i mean when you look at these razor thin margins but regardless of who wins. What did this might mean for. Republicans this is i mean. The republican party generally wins elections in the south particularly in georgia in an election. I sort of assumed okay. Biden is a particular kind of democrat. He appeals the black voters. He also appeals to older white voters. He appeals them. Swing voters so maybe it's just a one off and the republicans are still strong in georgian a win most racist unfortunately too many folks in our party over the last two months of talking about misinformation election fraud and creating a distraction. We've been out worked out focused but it might still be the case but the republicans appear to have lost to ruffea war. Not in jon ossoff. Who neither who has looked at anything before so. This is not like being defeated by joe by a pretty talented politician who's won a lot of race. I think win or lose here..

Nobody's gonna do that The courts are not going to get are not gonna intervene their federal judges who are staunch Trump supporters who were nominated by Trump, who are purely political. The appointees, and every one of them has said no Because imagine this. The philosophy here is if a Republican loses the race, then it is rigged. You're going to see that happen in Georgia in the race between David Perdue, A and John OSS off us off being the Democrat Purdue being a sitting senator. Same thing with Kelly La Flor, who's been a sitting senator. She was appointed by Brian Kemp, the the governor and the Reverend Raphael Warnock, the Democrat. If it turns out the Democrats win, I guarantee you it will start all over again. The lawsuits It will be. It was a rigged election. It was stolen by the Democrats. I promise you that's going to happen, and it's going to be egged on by the president and the philosophy behind all of this. Is that the only true democratic election that exists in this country is if a Republican winds Democrat cannot be democratically elected effectively. It's one party. Why even bother with other parties, so I want you know what China does. Vietnam does. It's one party. No, I mean that's effectively what is being asked for by the staunchest of the, uh, that's don't steal the vote or whatever the phrase is stopped the steel So today. Is it now? What if the states don't meet the deadline on Lee was constant has until midnight. But if it doesn't meet the deadline has not certified its result. That increases the risk that Congress then decides. If the state's electors now keep in mind, Congress has to accept the state electors. And this Congress have the ability to say no. We don't accept those state electors. We want a new group of electors notwithstanding the popular vote. Well. Theoretically, Republican led state legislatures can decide to send Trump Electricity, Electoral College even if the state goes to Biden. So there are holes here. In which any candidate Can literally simply overturn the election. Not withstanding that the other candidate has won the election. It's a question of using these I mean, they're tiny little pinprick loopholes. But and of course it's not gonna happen. We all know that. And it's Oh, here's a quick one. By the way, and you may have not known this The number of electors is 538. You need to 70 to win. And you know what? That number 5 38 is. It's a number of members of Congress. There are 538 districts in the United States, Members of Congress, and every state has an elector equal to the number off Congress. People that it has. There's where the 2 70 magic number comes up, and it's always been that way. So we'll see what happens. What happens next? Well, the safe harbor deadline passes today. The state's electors have another six days to vote like paper ballot before Congress needs to count the electoral votes. And that will happen on the seventh 14th, where the president of the Senate Who is that? Mike? Pence, announces the results of the Electoral College. And then the next step after that is the inauguration of the new president and S O Pence gets to announce that Trump has lost All right. Georgia Senate debates make headlines ahead of runoff
"Voting in georgia for the january senate elections begins one week from today. On december fourteenth debates for both georgia's senate races were held last night in atlanta. Here's republican senator. Kelly leffler and democrat reverend raphael warnock. My question is a pretty simple. Yes or no. Senator leffler did donald trump lose a recent presidential election. President trump has every right to use every legal recourse available in our own state. We've seen time and again that we have investigations that need to be completed. The trump campaign has filed fifty three frivolous lawsuits claiming election fraud courts. Actually the lawsuits did not ever claim fraud. Not in a single one of those losses. Did they claim fraud. Once they got in a court courts found zero instances fraud that includes one case. George that was dismissed today by a federal judge appointed by president. George w bush drudges republican. Senator david perdue who is facing allegations of insider trading. Just refuse to show up to debate as challenger don crat jon ossoff who appeared next to an empty lecture. My message for the people of our state at this moment of crisis is your senator feels entitled to your vote. Your senator is refusing to answer questions and debate his opponent because he believes he shouldn't have to. He believes this senate seat belongs to him. The senate seat belongs to the people today. John also held a campaign event in lilburn georgia. Imagine being a. us. Senator afraid of answering questions in public for fear that he might incriminate himself at a moment. Like this when people are hurting joining us. Now is who and castro. The former secretary of housing and urban development in the obama administration. Former mayor of san antonio texas secretary castro. Thank you very much for joining us tonight. You're back on the campaign trail today. Jon ossoff tomorrow for raphael warnock What are you seeing out there. Especially in response to this weekend's debate last night's debate where a david did not even show up. It's good to be with you lawrence. But what i've seen is a lot of people georgia understand how important the stakes are here. They understand that what happens here in georgia is gonna affect not only all georgians but also all of us as americans. I think most of gay and what they saw in the debates last night. Reinforce this that in a senators leffler purdue they've had two people that endorsed most critical moment of need have chosen to serve themselves to enrich themselves benefit their friends instead of working on behalf of the people of georgia. And what they see an rafael warnock in jon. Ossoff our to folks who are committed to serving the people georgia who were talking about the issues that matter healthcare job getting small suspect up in going housing opportunity as many people facing eviction making sure that we tackle climate change in the biggest challenge of our generation so the the differences here couldn't be more clear. Let's listen to more of what john also had to say on the campaign trail today. And how are these campaigns. These two democratic campaigns a sound like a partnership. Let's listen to this. You got the young jewish journalist son of an immigrant running alongside a black preacher who holds the same pulpit as dr king at the knees baptist church building a movement for health jobs and justice for the people at a moment of crisis because health jobs and justice are what the people need right now and we are running against the bonnie and clyde of political corruption in america secretary castro that kind of teamwork is unusual. Most people would. They're running for office. They're just trying to get themselves over that hurdle. Well it is. And i think we're fortunate that we have these runoffs going on at the same time as you know. Lawrence doesn't not happen where you have to united states senate seats in a runoff at the same time and i think they've done a very good job as a team and painting making sure that their message is clear about what they're gonna do for the people of georgia that get his asses the work to make sure that folks have good opportunities in georgia. And that's how they're going to govern governed in a much stronger way for the people of georgia than a leffler and purdue. Have i want to listen to something. That reverend warnock said last night in his debate because interestingly both democratic campaigns are running against republican candidates credibly accused of insider trading using their senate positions for insider trading. Let's listen to what the way reverend warnock put it. Last night. She was only there three weeks. i'm not sure she was fully unpacked when she started dumping millions of dollars of stock trying to protect herself and She purchased. That seat is done well for her. The issue is that the people who sold it to our. Don't it and the people of georgia coming back to get their seat sir. Castro is that issue getting traction on the campaign trail is especially. Because you're is somebody in kelly lafleur who was not elected Who last night into debate. You could tell just said the same thing over and over and over again and instead of addressing the issues basically just tried to label roselle warna you know as do liberal for georgia when he was there actually talking about the things that we hear people talking about table being able to afford the rent. You know wh what is their gonna come back online. What is washington dc. Doing work to make sure that they have opportunity. And to make sure the infancy can get asked endemic It's night and day away. That worn can also addressing the issues. That people are talking about the care about right now. And i'll disconnected leffler and her do our sanitary helene. Castro live from the campaign trail in georgia. Thank you very much for joining us tonight. Really appreciate
