Brazil's President Downplays Pandemic Despite Rising Cases In His Hometown

Trump-Kemp Dispute Creates Rift Within Georgia GOP as Runoff Elections Nears

"You might need to win an election is a unified message. But Republican unity is hard to come by in the state of Georgia. Right now, President Trump has called Governor Brian Camp a fool and a clown for refusing to overturn President elect Joe Biden's victory there. Kemp says intervening in the election would be illegal and pressure over that dispute is creating a rift within the state's Republican Party just three weeks before runoff elections that will determine control of the Senate from member station to be Abie in Atlanta ever hurt reports Earlier this month, Governor Brian Kemp gave a press conference at the state Capitol about George's plan to distribute the Corona virus vaccine. Well, good afternoon, everyone. First of all, let me thank you for joining us today. Also, the elephant in the room is politics and on the Facebook Live comments. It's center stage. This man has turned his back on his Republican Party, writes one Georgian Can't believe I voted for you. Camp sellout, says another. And don't bother to run again. You're finished. Needless to say, Georgia Republicans are divided right now. Some lawmakers air calling to override the governor and back the president by demanding a special session of the Legislature. We're here in Athens today, Bert Jones with US And bring the beach part of the gang of four, putting out a petition demanding a special session. They're trying to go around the governor they need to Republican State Senators, Jones and Beach were on the John Fredericks Show and National Pro Trump Radio program. Last week, they alleged large scale voter fraud, which Republican election officials have said didn't happen. Here's beach and I can tell you if we do not fix this, and that's why I'm so adamant about this. I'm so fearful. That we're gonna wake up January 6, and we're not gonna like what happened because it's not going to be a fair election. Beach and Jones are responding to pressure from their pro trump constituents like those tearing camp apart on the Internet and calling in on this show, Let's get to the phone lines. Where we have Caroline from Sandy Springs carry these senators, some say, are ready to break the law to back President Trump. But Caroline wants them to know it's still not enough. We are mad on being very nice right now. We need you to step up into your part. We need you to stand up for us. Now. The pressure is so fierce on Republican state lawmakers, it was difficult to find someone willing to speak on the record for this story. They're worried about being targeted. But one did. My name was Chuck Martin represented 49th district up in North Fulton County. Martin is a longtime Republican. He spent 18 years in the General Assembly and wishes President Trump won the election. But he liked the governor doesn't believe the Constitution allows the Legislature to intervene That hasn't stopped tens of thousands of emails from flowing in. I'm getting an email that says, Stand true to your oath of office do this. But standing true to my oath of office doesn't allow me to do that. It's been the most frustrating moment in his public service career, he says, because some people have been completely convinced by misinformation. Like one retired army colonel who is pushing for the election to be overturned. Martin responded with language from the state Constitution, saying, Please explain how I can legally do what you're asking me to do. And instead from him, I get no How instead you know, he calls me a coward. A traitor. You know somebody that won't stand up to my oath of office. That's frustrating to me. I mean, I take this job seriously. President Trump is creating a rift in the Republican Party at a very inopportune time, says Charles Bullock, a political scientist at the University of Georgia as we saw in November of this year The Republican Party doesn't have AH, large commanding lead within Georgia, It is rarely close. It could be the kind of division it opens the door for Democrats to do very well in 2022. Jeannie Bradley is a Republican voter from helps about in Eastern Georgia. She was at a Mike Pence rally this month. And she's just confused because of the mixed messages about the election and about her Republican leaders. But we need to know more. You know, you're getting bits and pieces from all of the news media. You don't know. What to believe anymore, And it's just not the news media. It's people you know. In general, Republicans will still have her vote. But there are other people, she says, who may throw up their hands in this chaos, vote democratic or skip the election. And if Republicans lose the run offs, the big divisions that have emerged since November will likely only intensify in the GOP for NPR news. I'm Emma hurt in Atlanta

For Air Force Leader, Making Video On Racism He's Faced Was 'The Right Thing To Do'

"General Lloyd Austin is confirmed as the next secretary of defense, He'll be the first African American to hold that position. His nomination comes as the U. S military, like much of the rest of the country is grappling with issues of race after the killing of George Floyd and the protests that followed. Which brings us to another general Charles Que Brown. Over the summer, he became the first African American to lead a branch of the U. S military. He is the chief of staff for the Air Force. As his confirmation hung in the balance. General Brown chose to speak out about George Floyd's death, even if it cost him his promotion. Here's an excerpt from that video message released in July when he was still Pacific Air Force's commander. Think about how awful I am with emotion, not just for George Floyd. But the many African Americans that have suffered the same fate as George Boyd. I'm thinking about protests in my country. Tis of thee sweet Land of liberty. Equality expressing Arctic exploration of independence and the Constitution that I've sworn my adult life to support the fan. Thinking about a history of racial issues in my own experiences that didn't always sing of liberty and equality. I asked General Brown why he needed to deliver that message. I talked to one of our sons. Who was he went to Washington Mercy in ST Louis s O. His freshman year was Ferguson. And so he experienced that. And then he lives here in Washington, D. C and he He called us and he was. He was kind of struggling. With Things were going on. And so, um He asked me in the conversation. Hey, Hey, Dad. What is specific Air force is going to say, and as a commander, Pacific Air forces That was kind of code to me of Dad. What are you going to say? So on Tuesday, when I confirmation didn't come through. I was committed, then that discordant and do the video. And so was my own personal experiences, but, you know, thinking about her two sons. And their experiences and so that actually was what got me to do it. Did you tell your superiors Uh, no. I felt like, you know. I got to a point where because of talking to my son. I thought it was the right thing to do. You are now the highest ranking African American in the U. S. Military. How do you use that position to make it So the younger version of yourself isn't the only one in the room. How do you Increase opportunities for air men and women of color. Rachel. I think it's about being a role model. It's about how I carry myself on a day to day basis so that those that They're more dinner to make can can look up and see somebody they want to aspire to be, like, ideally, so what actions will be necessary? I mean, it's one thing to be unexamined well to be a role model, and that's important. But what changes what policy changes do you think need to be made? I mean, is I understand that there was an inspector general report. Looking into how racism could affect promotions in the Air Force, and hundreds of thousands of our men and women were also surveyed about diversity issues. What actions do those results point to The data actually shows that you know there are areas where based on What career feels ERM and go into made either help or hurt their opportunity to rise to more senior ranks. And so it's how we pay attention to recruiting in placing Eman of diverse backgrounds and specific career feels It's also looking at someone requires. We have a career Phyllis to understand. Do they have some type of barrier that we have not paid attention to? Because that's the way it's always been. The other thing we were also looking to do is how do we work in closely managed those of a diverse background and what I mean by that is just really take a look at the opportunities to prepare them for those positions to consider them. For positions and not make it just the situation. We hope it all works out, but it takes purposeful leadership in engagement to ensure that we are actually bringing the best. For all over me. There are more than 12,000 active duty pilots in the Air Force, according to data compiled by McClatchy News Service on Lee. About a dozen of them are black women. Do you see that as a problem? Do you only aspire to what you've been exposed to? You know, sometimes we might self eliminate just because we don't think we're qualified. So one of the areas that we have an air force is looking at is how do we provide more exposure? To young African Americans. Women really across the board. That? Yes, you could do this. And here's what it takes to get there I often say is We all need to ask what we wanna be able to. The worst air force can do is tell, you know, but if you don't ask, we can't say yes. So we want to put those that want to be part of our air force in a position where we can say yes. Let me ask you about this current moment in our political history in this country, the transition between one administration and another is actually critical to the national security. Are you convinced that the current civilian leadership at the Pentagon is committed to a smooth and responsible transfer of power? I think we're all working to a smooth transition of power. Both civilian and military and the Our job is to maintain our national security. And no matter who which administration our community chief we have, and that's that's my job as a service chief is a joint chief, and our goal is to make sure that we don't have a Any type of security incident in a peaceful transition of power like we've found throughout our history. You have any concerns that there would be? I mean, is it going to plan right now? The transition from your perspective. E think are now securities and is in is Not being threat right now, but realize that also that We're always we don't we have one side of the boat and the other side of the voters are our adversaries, and that's something as a as a service season, 25 play close attention to what the other joint chiefs to ensure that We have a good sense of what's going on around the world as well. Let me ask about the man who could become The next secretary of defense, retired army General Lloyd Austin. I assume you've You've come across one another once or twice. What's he like? Is the leader. He's a strong leader. I think he's decisive. I I enjoyed working for him and he listens. Which I think is an important aspect as a leader, and he's willing to take input from those around him. If confirmed, General Austin will join you in making history this year by becoming the first African American to lead the Department of Defense. What will it mean to you and your serviceman to see him sworn into that job? I think for any one of a diverse black man. When you see someone who rises to a key position, you take a bit of pride in it. You appreciate it, and it also opens an opportunity that where you now think about your own career path, there's opportunities of the head. Chief of staff of the Air Force. We're not gonna wear this and we're like what's going to protect you from bullets. And they're like is it really though and you're like yeah it's gonna totally protect you from bullets. You should wear it because it's good for you and they're like no. We're we're not going to wear like what will prove. It's not gonna stop bullets. Just just wear so take the body armor and they bring it over to the wall and they hang on the wall and a guy comes back and literally dumps an entire magazine of ince full auto to this body armor which i mean from ten meters away which is obviously shredded..

"It was basically double the height and they would fill those with whatever mixture they would use to make homemade high explosive and that's what they would bury under oath saying imagine how big that is and they would have to pack twenty thirty forty of them under the road to work. I we we told on our tour. Like yeah the running out of real like explosives. So we're gonna see jugs and those. Those jobs in afghanistan were ubiquitous. They were everywhere because it just just as deadly people use them for water. Homemade explosives are just as deadly in in higher quantities. It's not it's not the same as semtex are yeah am for or whatever so But in the quantities they were using the man. Who's just as dead. Yeah but more visible harder to hide that right. This is why they started digging them in tunnels fuck and that entire countries a giant tunnel system by the way is there really dig everywhere and it's so dry they were able to dig everything everywhere fucking and because when it does rain it because the soil is so dry just runs over the top of the of the land. It doesn't sink in like it does here. So they would have these these ditches the call wadis and they would they would run all over the place when they ran across a road they would have these big giant drains under the roads now their primary way of putting bombs under the road to the super easy. Just go in there. You put them in. So we started watching the culverts. We started putting steel grates on the culverts and they started figuring out ways around. It's a typical. It was a typical arms race. Sort of thing where we come up with a solution they come up with a better method and then we come up with You know counter the counter. Accordingly jesus prisoner and guard we would cut off their supply of Whatever and they would find an alternate supplier or they would find a different material that worked with what they had..

"Not so bad right night driving. You're looking on these shitty. Just night-vision screens that don't work half the time. And you can't see anything from smoke so all you see is a trail ahead you and you're just trying to follow that trail rate and you gain a almost like probably what you got just lingo with each other. Like certain. words like a nudge. I know announcements as much. When i want to get a different commander. Because he's gone off. A nudge means more arguing. I'm like you said a nudge or a like turn. I'm like but so that was. The hardest for me was driving a vehicle. Because you're the guy driving right and we're always the lead vehicle. Section are surgeon flew the jolly roger like the pirate ship flag. The blocks go across. He flew that above our live band. Tour see yeah. We were warned. Like we're picking up until that they want to blow up the lab with the flag and i'm like surge. We take that down. I'm gonna drive this week. No i'm like oh fuck. We're going to die but he'd play a game that was started on. It was cruel. It just got me. Oh my got but then eventually became fun. Was you'd be driving and what the taliban would do they plant a bomb. But what they do is eight. Have to have a marker so they night it like whether it was a cellphone or a switch right call it in on a cell phone to blow it up time villain off a marker to see they know as soon as you pass this that giant green tree. That's when you're going to go right. So i'd be driving in my surge he'd be like a loppy..

"I mean they had the same risk as we did a for dying from eighties or or being shot at or whatever up but they had the extra risk of this was their country right. These guys could literally track their family down and find out where they lived. Find out where family lived. And i i. I give all the credit in the to to my interpreters that and they don't they don't have the training near the training they don't have any. They didn't carry firearms right right. So so they're they're literally they count on us to defend them and on top of that. They're they're so vulnerable and they were which is an add on our tour. We did arrest a couple of the interpreters cult him turps because they were giving her location to albion getting sniped off so well. Yeah but that's different. That's not like them helping you the fucking you at that point exactly so i mean like it's like everything he can't fucking trust anybody. Oh you trust them. One day the next day they're getting you killed so it's it's a fucking kinda careful care. Actually i credit one of my one of my interpreters. He definitely saved my life. The one day because i was crying of crossing a bridge. He telling you they're saying there's a bomb the bridge. So i'm like making my way across the bridge. And i got to the other side of the bridge and there was a guy named just like five steps behind the who also made it across the bridge and we set up. And we're like we were covering the other side because they have to be close to detonate a bomb and And no thankfully no one else crossed the bridge and rebranding the engineers. They actually disabled it before it was. They didn't bother. They didn't end up setting off because there was no one on it. Imagine being the guy that has to go up to the bottom of disabled it though knowing that they could blow it at any moment. Those guys were i mean. Holy shit the stuff. They went through they were. I mean as as much as as we were outside the wire every single day doing patrols and stuff yeah their job was to actually go out and seek out the thing that was actively on the tour that i was on. i've been told anyway that it was the most deadly tour for canadians and not a single person that i know of was shot with bullets and died. Everyone who was on my tour who died was killed by these. These guys were out there every single day. Just like clearing these things because they were planting so many of them and it got to the point where they were planting planting. It's like to see the movie. The great escape digging these crazy tunnels these guys were literally digging these crazy tunnels under the roads and putting so much explosives under the road that they would take a twenty ton armored vehicle fired into the air upside down and then it was. It would end up like jesus fifty meters from where it started. And and that's how much explosive they were putting into the road so it was like ending. We we have the the vehicle drove in was called. "How do you where do you sleep really varies based on where you were deployed and how are you were alec. What what organization. You were part of the cliff if we haven't even mentioned that to start so so my tour six or seven. I was infantry infantry. We're doing patrols where you go to random villages. Some you know are good. Some you know might be bad taba spot and so you're going other we've done soft knocks where you're going to handle it water and pencils a lot of these people. They asked for pencils. It's a crazy kids just want pencils. They'll make a pencil sign that they want the pencils and pens just not. It's like they can get regularly and a lot of the kids. Actually were legitimately excited to go to school allowed. They needed school supplies. So especially the girls the might to arrive like infantry was doing that stuff and then of course you've got your raids where you're going kicking in doors. You're know engage in the taliban stuff like sports and of course he got while you're on a mobile patrol or a foot patrol the engage you and you get a combat get near tech or whatever we got so. "Maybe edit it later if you want so obviously back in oh six oh seven. Pornhub wasn't a thing right so literally some guy with smuggling porn from his vacation or whatever and you like repay joe literally had like one piece of paper playboy out or whatever right which was contraband. You're not allowed to have that. So allegedly we would have so. Yeah so there's you have no privacy like we're up like in massive gar a mountain. We overtook right. Like it's just literally mountain the eventually put in a couple of porta potties. Porta johns. You know so that would be where you'd go to your business right. So the one time i go down and the lock was broken on the one porta-john door but it's like who fucking cares on shit anyway. So you go you you and your business and these engineers. Who didn't they were more set on the mountain. They didn't really go side of that mountain too much. They didn't for their job they didn't need to and we were just literally that was like a staging area. We'd go and we'd go get in a battle. Come back patrol. Come back right. So i'm doing my thing and engineer just opens the door. And he looks like kind of like almost disgusted. Her in shock. And i'm like hey buddy. I'm a little busy here. You're closing the fucking door. Just little things like that that you would never do human society anywhere else in the middle of the desert. When you're like dude. I'm probably going to fucking die like get the fuck outta here. So it's it's a different place man it's Yeah that's that's the part of that's the part of light guy. You know going overseas that most people you don't really think about i'm very open in your pocket of so i don't care i gotta take care of your logical needs and it's just like there's a porta-john there's like a secrets like whenever let's go page of all were like yeah story involving involved. Yes okay so we're doing another fucking so once again ask. The one tent actually had had to cots. Put two cards in this little mini ten right. And you're like. Oh my god actually get sleep so you take rotations of who actually got to use that instead of like sleeping rocks or mud or whatever it right right so i'm rocked out there and then i'm having the most vivid dream of my life that my girlfriend from back home is literally afghanistan. You rank yelp. Oh my god so it got disgustingly horrible once again my ask you course because like we were like living like animals like no sleep. No proper food The furthest izhak oh you see an escalation of a prank or starting between usually one or two guys were like their group another group within the group you know and it came to an apex at in the bathroom and the sheriff so you literally got like two minutes for fifty four guys to shower right like go and you're like what it's another impossible you're not gonna make it never gonna and then when you come out in five minutes and you're like wow. We did really fast go three minutes too long. Fuck you and they make you ron or make you do something horrible right or they don't get dirty against shower again. They don't give you lunch. They don't eat dinner. Whatever it is right now. It's always you're right. "You could be in the best place in the world. If you're shit people it's gonna suck so we made the best of it and we actually. I love shilo manitoba. Not that is the truth of the military. That is why people love it so much. The people who do go there they never. They always look back on it as the the best thing they've ever done. Because it's the people the people that you're with its bonding through mutual suffering. So that must get you through that like when you guys are on tour because you guys were gone for months at a time when you do that. Do you have internet you. Can you touch base with family or is it just you and the guys around you. And that's why. I mean my tourist to the six two hundred seven so i was the second tour in afghanistan. That's like we're there early when it was like pretty new right. A lot of shit was like we're learning as we were going. I think you're a little bit later. He's eight two thousand eight nine. Yeah okay so it's like on our tour. Occasionally you'd get a satellite like we were never. We actually set a record. We forget the number. We think we will like fifty two days outside the wire meaning. You're not in canada. Her airbase right where it's like you know you got air conditioned room to stay in or whatever and you got like you know amenities food laundry shower. You want like fifty two days without a shower without changing clothes without like you only brought one other work because you thought you're only going to be gone so long or two pairs that's right and you went through those within the first week. We're just going to go back. But every time we were supposed to go back something would happen. "And i'm like dude. I've never even been in an airplane. Let alone do i think i can fly. I don't know what you see me. Just put me in the damn infantry already so that i went infantry and like the recruiter said he gave his cell phone and he goes. Here's my cell phone. He goes memorize it. They might not let you keep paper with you. You're near training. And he goes you call me day or night anytime. I'll get you out of there within twenty four hours and we'll have you in. Mp training he goes. I forget the time it was like a ten or twenty thousand dollar No it was like a twenty thousand dollar pay raise per year instantly right. You instantly start at tha corporal. Yeah and there's also like ten thousand dollar signing bonus or something right which. I wasn't getting any of that. Like infantry you get paid shit you're not there for money you just the regular pay. There's no specialist opioids like. You're like i think cooks get more than thing. It's a fixed scale right. Yeah yeah yeah like. If you're whatever if you're this my first asian this conversation. Yeah but so. And he wasn't lying man. When i went through basic was pretty easy. Mostly just ironing and folding in learning rank structure and learning how to march nut till the end of basic training. They finally even shoot a rifle. I never shot a gun in my life so that was cool. But then i want to was after basic We do soldier soldier qualification. s q. Yes s q and i got sent to wainwright alberta. And that's where literally experienced the worst oman and exuberance of my life. But every night. I went to bed before my three. Maybe four hours sleep without guys phone number running through my head and i'm like i could go down to the pay phone. Call him right now. So was he army or did he want you in a different branch for you. Want to be a different person. Air force usually. It's empty right. No it's every. I said all of them. Yeah i think it's just the general any anyone from any brand can go. But but i literally thought of that guy my interview every night of my training whereas like that's it tonight so don't get the fuck. I can't do this anymore because people think like go in the infantry. It's easy i no man. It's just like the hardest thing i've done in my life like was the infantry's like general laborer like you are. You're like yeah you the workhorse. The whole definition is to like close with and destroy the enemy. That's right you're you're there to kill people that's it. That's that's your job. Essentially right like so when you're doing the training under really harsh conditions and it was honestly prepared me for anything in life. Oh so tour was nothing compared to my s q course so i imagine yeah a little different right but But no so it was. It was definitely unique my path into the army and stuff and then of course i didn't get emerton like they post your grades at a college or something on now. They got a list. And you're like okay. Who's we all wanted because of course was in shilo manitoba which is like twenty minutes so edmonton's like the best one to be at. That's where we wanted civilization that got hockey team green machinegun. I don't know man. Never been so and then we're in shallow manitoba which is like two hours away from winnipeg okay. They didn't have a hockey team back. Then either twenty minutes from it like it's nothing. There's nothing where we were. And yeah fucking also. They put a list fifty four of us to got to go to edmonton for compassionately cancer. There was blue vans toyota toy van. Or i don't even know. It was a blue van and there was a white toyota highlights and there was only three and the rest were jingle trucks and there was. Yeah then there was like yeah. I wish i have a picture of it right there in the photo album i for you. There's there's one. I want to see all these flashy colors. It's something you couldn't be like you'd think like church street in toronto like you. Literal bells everywhere. They're generally harmless though. Not didn't want know they didn't. This looks like for people like because we're not showing this. This looks like a very massive truck. That's done up for like a parade. It looks like a like a close but that was their normal. That's why we call them jingle chunks but they would stack stuff like way higher than was reasonable on top of these. That's gotta be tough though because if you are drunk like you suffer. Be kind of like attention. Yeah that's why. Limit it to to generally two beers. And i give you know a couple people get one extra. It's not that big a deal. The kind of the idea is that. Nobody's getting drunk. Yeah yeah. I mean after. Just to boost morale using huge.
