So let's take a look back before we talk about really the novel approach that you and other officials have taken to enhance safety at horse tooth but we pretty much saw record breaking year in twenty twenty. As far as usage of the reservoir right we have an average year horse heath reservoir just a contact tears the third vicious reservoir in the state of colorado chaffee number two public number one on average between horse teeth reservoir and horse teeth mountain park. We see about one point. Seven million visitors a year and with kobe last year. In two thousand twenty we saw about a twenty five percent increase in visitation Which you can imagine the strain that puts on visitors the resources and everybody's patient so we we saw huge increase Then just not only here in lamoure county but all along the front range around colorado really around the country installed about the same increasing numbers of visitors and adding to that was the fact was it. Stanley lake was closed last year. I believe so. You know some agencies smaller couldn't handle the Capacity of coming to shut down so we saw that in a few locations. But it's not only votes There's an a number of ways we can recreate on paddle boards and kayaks canoes. "Well. That's good to hear what's the deal with that Rotary Park Spike Strip. You know we talked about the increase in visitation normally in horse tooth area horse reservoir horses now park with about one point. Busier where the third biggest reservoir in the state of Colorado for boating chaffee was number two and Pueblos number one. Even with those numbers this year we're up to about forty percent. You know there's been a tremendous amount of growth along the front range in Larimer. County is certainly well county where we see a lot about half arbitation from. So those large numbers increase visitation. You know there's been some crime that comes with it. We get a lot of graffiti we get a lot of vandalism Vehicle break in in a bunch of other crimes speeding. Roads along with reservoir Colorado state patrol, designate those as a hot zone, which means they have a high occurrence of serious and deadly crashes. So it's really a combination of things that kind of. Let us down this road to how do we better manage How do we better manage our parks for safety and some of the problems that occur? In the east side parking. Lots at. Horseshoe. Reservoir. Day Use only. So my staff spends maybe one to three hours every night getting people out of those day use areas, and so this is just one tool that we use an kind of bigger picture how we didn't enforcement on the east side of there. "Only the sound. Well, fans of hordes tooth reservoir. We're trying to take it easy but sadly, and you know I've talked about this throughout the summer that's long been a place where I go to recharge and relax and get away from it all and unfortunately we said goodbye to our peer group just this past Sunday as because of dropping water levels. Well, let's just say it's going to be a truncated summer season at Horse to eight or nine now thirteen ten KFI. Thirteen ten KFI K. A. DOT COM northern Colorado's voice mornings with Gail live, and local. The auto collisions. Specialists Studios joined this morning by Mark, coughlan Horse Tooth Reservoir district manager. Hey Mark. Hey, good morning you. So I appreciate your taking the time because well, let's just say that we all noticed stuff at horse truth the water dropping rather precipitously. So why is that happening? There's two reasons really one is a maintenance project that's going on Soldier Canyon Dam they have to get to a certain water level by mid October. They put divers down and work on the outlet structure. That's where the city of Fort Collins take some water out, and they're also doing a project upstream just right there by flat reservoir called Cottonwood Siphon project they're Kinda. Beefing up that that site and that goes underneath the road there by flood on reservoirs they can start. Doing Construction Chimney Hall Reservoir, which is just one rich west of Carter Lake. So there's only two. Yeah, they're doing this pretty smart in northern water is doing this pretty smart visit doing two projects in the same year as opposed to kind of hit us with one project one year one project the next doing the same year, which is really helpful. So we only see low water levels only one year I think even though the water levels are dropping, we'll still have a boat ramp in course teeth reservoir throughout November traditionally our last day of voting up in anywhere in Limit County Park. So it's Carter Lake or or horse tooth reservoir is. Thirty that's the last day we do quoc nuisance species inspections. Were held at state standards of inspecting every boat that goes into our reservoirs. So a lot of people wondering about the boat ramps will be usable through. Labor Day. Of course, we won't lose any RAMS I. Don't think by by this weekend, we'll still have all four ramps and the water the pylons see rams losing getting getting lost probably next week sometime, the tank and we'll be the first ramp that goes out which is the furthest North Boat. Ramp. Then after that we'll see one of the South Bay Rams, go out the next that play in what they were still talking two to three weeks down the road before you lose those completely like I said, but we'll have a ramp in the water. We will have a rap in water all year this year through November now you and I throughout the summer. season. Had the opportunity to chat a little bit about the safety this as a result of covid nineteen. So many water attractions were closed to include a wider world. So a lot more boat traffic up on the Rez this year but with the water dropping if I'm not mistaken according to miles, bloom hearts in the Fort Collins, Colorado and the water level dropped from ninety seven percent. That's fifty four, thirty Ninety, seven percents almost fifty four, thirty fool at the beginning of the season to about sixty percent last week certainly with the number of boats and paddle borders, Kayakers, and boaters, and just people recreating on the reservoir safety of ultimate concern. Certainly is we we were down a little bit Lord that wasn't quite that. Hit. What the what northern water in the beer recognition was able to do is keep his high as long. As high as long as possible. So I you saw that sharp drop is it we ask them. Hey, please keep as high as long as possible to enjoy the recreation season. which is really through about mid July for their really started pointy really measurable amount of water out there with the typically do every year you we usually pretty high they fill up all winter. We had our peak elevation somewhere in May then somewhere when farmers start calling for water and people start irrigating their lawns. Really. Hard about that first or second weekend July. That's when we see those traditional drawdowns heavy draw down. So it was about the same time frame. certainly they have to You know draw by more than normally would, but it's not it's not over the sixty six year history, the reservoir this is not extreme We know we've been at this level before many times since nineteen fifty, four just extreme. This of it is because was construction prices they have to get down to certain allocation for water levels. Do they put divers safely? So that's why we're seeing the draw down. We're seeing right now. What's the expectation and maybe this would be a question better pose to jeff to US Tayla north water. But what is the expectation? Well, horse tooth be filled to the brim as we approach next boating season. Yet. All the front range reservoirs were kind of lack system at least in Colorado, the water project system where. Really grabby shout amount in Grand Lake where we get our water from the CPT project those reservoirs ninety percent capacity. We're GONNA need to draw those reservoirs down in the wintertime to make room for the runoff next spring so they'll fill us up. You know. We get projection GONNA take over the grain of salt but we should be full next year giving a giving a moderate average year, and we should be four close to next brain is where we're being told that, and that seems to hold true from what I've seen them my twenty six.

And so in running, it might be you haven't got the muscle injuries and your legs. It might be just can't run that fast. It might be the car, the oxygen, it might be the confident enough. It might be that you're not enough when the going gets tough. So we'd put some, we put just a few things through just to help you think about that kind of stuff. And really as always trading talk about stimulating thought with with listeners rather than actually saying really prescriptive. This do it. I'm going to go out of order Lil back.
