"Bring Bloomberg And And you america's video very good Business afternoon earnings most trusted everyone day. Week business with live magazine Carole Is it from the Masser our plus most Bloomberg important Interactive and global Brokers earnings Tim business report or Stenebeck Studio finance streaming of Jackson Hole? on on and YouTube our and tech lifetimes? You make the Bloomberg Bloomberg news Originals. call. as Radio. You know when politicians say it And video this is the most important election ever? Yeah well of course they do. They say that every election. I would say this is a big one because there's been so much excitement so much euphoria over artificial intelligence and this is the company that's kind of been our North Store. North Store. North Star if you will. It's been our AI store. It has. So it's Nvidia earnings day. It's also known as Wednesday August 23rd and it's also AKA the day before when American workers are most often to tell their bosses I'm not going to be in today. We just heard that from Denise Pellegrini. My stomach hurts. I'm not feeling good. Stomach bug. The most common excuse. Stomach bug bug covers so much because how can you argue that ate something wrong, got a virus. I'm not going to argue. Anyway we got a lot coming up. We're going to talk about all of that. Carol Masler along with Tim Stenovick. We are going to talk Nvidia. We're also talk going about to the market because both stocks and bonds climbing as investors once again bank on a Fed. Maybe taking a bit of a breather. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe. We'll see what happens on Friday. Yeah we will see. right. All And then we'll see what happens in September when the FOMC next meets. Hey speaking of that Carol. Yes. If you could write a D or J letter as in J Powell. What might it say? Dear J. Good job so far. What's next? He's very mild mannered. Who J or Barry Ritholtz who wrote the letter. J. Barry Ritholtz is going to be joining us in just a bit. He took on that exact task. We're going to catch up with him a little bit later in the program. How's your Peloton doing? My Peloton's fine. It's a little rusty because I haven't been on it in a little while. Maybe that's part of the problem. Yeah that is. Peloton plummeting again on what one else says is a messy quarter. So we're going to talk about what is the future. We do have the first debate of the presidential season. It is tonight we're going to talk to a political insider on what is best for business and what's best for all of us here in this great country of the United States of Russia. Today about half of global supply of enriched uranium comes from Russia. It's today's big take. Why is this important and an reality uncomfortable for leaders here in the U .S. and in Europe. Incredible story. The Bloomberg big take. And then we're going to get to dealing with all of our trash and how it's evolving into a more environmentally friendly way. We're going to talk to the president and CEO of the publicly traded Republican Republic Services excuse me by the way number one investor in that company. Who is it? Bill Gates. I've heard of him. Alright tracking we're the markets right now folks. Interesting day ahead of Jackson Hole. Let's get to it with our TV colleagues. Countdown to the close it starts right now. Countdown to the close Bloomberg's comprehensive cross platform coverage ahead of the US market close starts right now. This is to the countdown the close. I'm Scarlett Fu here with Shonali Basak and we're joined now by our colleagues Carol Masser and Tim Stenovic and of course we welcome in full our Bloomberg audiences across television radio YouTube and streaming on originals and guys I feel like this is the eve of so many different things we're just kind of in wait and see mode for Jackson Hole but first for Nvidia. No it's really the eve of I'm not feeling so well and not coming in but we'll talk about that in just a moment. A couple of stories in the housing market and we do wonder how this might factor into some of the stuff we get out of Jackson Hole but it certainly gives those who are going to be in attendance some more data points to think about. So we're talking about specifically US home purchase applications hitting the lowest since 1995 basically those higher mortgage rates we continue to talk about the move up in the 30 or what its highest time I think since about 2000 and so that is certainly affecting people's ability to actually go out and buy.

"Do in the first 5 seconds. Instead what has happened is a couple of things. One, the judiciary and the attorney general in Israel have basically put their foot on the gas. They've decided that they are going to explicitly almost explicitly say that they'll strike down anything that the legislature does. So if the legislature passes something, changing how the judiciary is picked in Israel, the judiciary will just strike it down. Which is kind of a constitutional crisis. It's almost as though in the United States if a constitutional amendment were passed, saying the Supreme Court can no longer rule on issues related to abortion. And the Supreme Court struck down the constitutional amendment. He'd be like, ah, what now? What are we supposed to do? So that's sort of the problem. The judiciary is now sounding off on questions where it's not clear whether they even have a say. In fact, I think the most absurd aspect of this particular controversy and conflagration over there is that the attorney general of the State of Israel said that Netanyahu because he's currently under indictment on a corruption charge. Can't take part in the negotiations on judicial reform because he's an interested party. The attorney general said that. The attorney general is being legislated about. She is an interested party, ruling that Netanyahu can't take he's an elected official. He can't take part in the negotiations, but she can. And she can rule on it, even though she's an interested party. So what's happened is essentially a stalemate. You have the government, which is elected, saying we would like to ram this thing through. And then you have the left, going out in the street, and activating pretty much everything at its disposal in order to stop it. They've threatened with the Supreme Court, they now have members of the Israeli army who are saying, we're not going to show up for work. You now have the root, which is the biggest labor union in Israel. It's like 800,000 people who work for the history route. a general strike. You have universities, which are run by the left shutting down. You have tech millionaires over there who are saying they're going to pull their money. So basically, it's the elected branch. The electric coalition versus all the established powers that be over there, the main issue being not really the judiciary, but can there can there be some sort of deal that is cut? So this all came to a head over the weekend because y'all have gone on to a member of Likud and who was the Secretary of Defense, he was the minister of defense under Netanyahu, he came out and he said that he wanted to freeze the process that we need to not move forward with this judicial reform right now. It's just too hot. Everybody's going too crazy. We need to stop this. And he also sort of implied that the soldiers reservists were not showing up to serve in the army that those people, they may have occasion. I'm going to meet with them. And Netanyahu is the prime minister says, well, I can't have the minister of defense legitimate legitimizing people not showing up for work because they don't like the policy of the government. In the United States, if Joe Biden did something, the members of the military don't like and members of the military said we're not showing up for work. They don't get thrown in the brig. So Netanyahu fired his minister of defense. This prompted massive spasms of protest in the streets in Israel. Now, the most likely outcome in any case is going to be that the Supreme Court of Israel is just going to strike down whatever Netanyahu's coalition passes. And Netanyahu is not going to activate the IDF, the Israeli defense force against the Supreme Court in Israel and cause like an overt war of all install. That's not going to happen. Everybody who keeps saying this actually has an interest in the chaos. They have a political interest in the chaos. The first thing that would need to happen in Israel is for everybody to calm the hell down, get in a room and start actually negotiating this thing out. But right now, all the incentive structures are misaligned. And so what you're likely to have is the coalitional ram through something. The Supreme Court will strike it down, and then life will essentially go back to quasi normal. But there are a bunch of underlying issues in Israeli politics that are going to have to get solved in order for this thing not to percolate under the surface. And those issues are going to be things like do the ultra orthodox have to serve in the army. What sort of religious restrictions are going to be acceptable in a diverse society? How exactly are members of the judiciary selected? All these questions that have been kind of put on back burner for a long time. Those are going to have to be answered in Israel moving forward. So that's sort of the synopsis of what's going on in his role. We'll keep you updated, obviously. It sort of fascinating. The reason it has broader international ramifications is because there are a couple of things that are happening here that are sort of fascinating. One is that there is a tendency on the part of the press that any time anyone on the right does well electorally, the answer is crisis democracies in danger. That's not true. It's not just on the left, by the way. People on the right are doing this too. It needs to stop. If you would like to see robust Republican republic, Republicans work. If you would like to see democracies continue to thrive, people need to stop acting as the one they lose an election, it is the end of the world. It is not the end of the world. There's another election coming. And if you truly believe it's the end of the world, then you are spoiling, for like an actual violent fight, and it's dangerous, dangerous stuff, whether you're talking about Israel, where it's left protesting, Netanyahu, whether you're talking about during the Trump administration, where it was the left protesting Trump and suggesting that he was an illegitimate president, whether it was post 2020 when there were a lot of people who were suggesting that it was the end of the country because Trump had lost not true. Trump is the leading candidate on the right right now. And everybody needs to cool their heels for a second. And one of the things that I think has happened. I said, earlier, you sure has gotten fat and kicked? When you lose all those intermediate institutions in society, when you share a less and less as a people, and when you're incredibly rich and very distractible, and you have the time to actually go out and protest in the streets, people are tending to do that a lot. It's happening in France, too. You're literally seeing fires just being set in the streets of France. Over raising the retirement age from 62 to 64. Are these the sorts of issues over which democracies should break? Absolutely not. But the thing about apocalypse is that it's a self fulfilling prophecy. The more you keep saying that it's the end of the road, the more you draw closer to the end of the road. Okay, in just a second, we'll get to the latest in the 2024 Republican presidential race, which is heating up Donald Trump went to Waco, Texas, and he went for it. We'll get to that momentarily first.

"Up by four tenths of 1% here in Sydney I'm Paul Allen where it is one minute past one in the afternoon this Wednesday For quite a look at what's going on in markets let's get over to Brian Curtis Paul thanks very much Yeah it's a little surprising It could be a little bit of a relief rally from the torrid selling that we saw yesterday or it could be that investors think that so far the sanctions announced against Russia and the actual actions by Russia are not so disastrous for markets We don't know We just see 8 of the 9 benchmarks are higher right now The only one that's lower is the straight times index in Singapore but the Thai ex is higher the cost speed is higher saying I composite CSI 300 the hang seng index and tech index as well as the ASX 200 and the nzx 50 They're all up These are marginal gains about a third of 1% But if you look at U.S. futures the Dow is up a 142 points S&P E minis up about 22 points about a half of 1% Euro stock features are higher as well And so are Dax futures So whatever the story is it's a little perplexing to many who have worried about the actions by the Russian president into Ukraine And the response by the west Right now the yield on the ten year treasuries at 1.93% no trading because Tokyo is closed The two year at one 54 so that does make the two ten spread just 39 basis points WTI is not doing too much at the moment round about $92 and 35 cents And we see dollar yen now one 1505 not too much action in currencies Dug over to you All right Brian thanks Well here in the state's President Biden announced the first wave of U.S. sanctions against Russia This is obviously a response to Moscow's recent actions involving Ukraine Here is President Biden speaking earlier at The White House Implementing comprehensive sanctions on Russian sovereign debt That means we've cut off Russia's government from western financing It can no longer raise money from the west and can not trade in its new debt on our markets or European markets either So said another way U.S. firms will not be allowed to purchase newly issued Russian government bonds in the secondary market from next month onward the U.S. by the way already prohibits such purchases in the primary market Now mister Biden went on to say the U.S. would impose sanctions on Russia's two biggest banks and also the country's elites who Biden says share the corrupt gains of the Kremlin's policies Now yesterday obviously you might remember Russian president Putin recognized two self proclaimed separated Republicans republics that is in eastern Ukraine as being independent Paul Russian sanctions were not limited to the U.S. Germany effectively froze the approval process for the Nord stream two gas pipeline The Russian led pipeline bypasses Ukraine and connects to Germany but it can't begin operations without first proving it doesn't pose a threat to security of supply His German Chancellor Olaf Scholes It sounds technical But this is the necessary legal administrative protection so that no certification of the pipeline can take place right now And without this certification Nord stream two can not go into operation The German economic ministry now has to produce a new analysis of the pipeline security of supply At the same time the UK sanctioned 5 Russian banks and three billionaires in the EU proposed sanctions targeting banks that finance Russian military and other operations in the region Let's get an update on global news here at 5 minutes past the hour Well along with those sanctions that President Biden put on Russia and Russia business he also said that if president Vladimir Putin is trying to reshape.

"Rich does include those movements so Russia recognizing two separatist Republicans republics in Ukraine and sending what it calls in peacekeeping troops So joining us live is a Bloomberg and marine horndon chief Washington correspondent Thank you so much for joining us Ann Marie today Today to me looks like the chess pieces of the board which have been sitting in place have finally begun to be played These actions along with his Putin's speech to the nation game changing are they not Yeah they certainly are This is the president recognizing now done yes And Luhansk as separatist areas although they are part of Ukraine So this would torpedo the minced agreement that especially Germany and France has been trying to implement and work with Ukraine and Russia in this Normandy format for And now you have president Putin in the signing of that decree sending troops into this region which he is calling a peacekeeping region Now a U.S. official gave a call with reporters and said that there have been Russian troops already in that area For the past 8 years immediately though the president has an executive order on barring and prohibiting anyone from doing a U.S. citizens from having trade or financial agreements in those regions But key that they said tomorrow there will be more measures So really they're all waiting to see what the U.S. response is when it comes to tomorrow Yeah the president ready for you today Yeah well and it keeps going on because the president has warned mister Biden of what he calls a false flag event And you had Jake Sullivan out today the NSA director saying that the chances for diplomacy are decreasing moment by moment Is this could any movement of any of the NATO nations cause an invasion of Ukraine as a whole This what I imagine they are going to do is watching out exactly what these troops do when they go to these regions of Luhansk and Donetsk And whether or not they would regard that as a quote invasion or not This official did say that they had been troops already for the past 8 years in this region They didn't get over their skis and that sense But there is clearly concern as you noted from the U.S. administration already we have a story as well and exclusive scoop to Bloomberg news that the U.S. is considering moving Ukrainian embassy out of the country altogether So this would be leaving Ukraine even though they moved them from Kyiv to the yes but moving it officially to Poland This is potentially under discussion right now Yeah We have less than a minute here but I want to ask you the sanctions The EO today and presumably more tomorrow is what The White House is saying Will they actually hurt or is this just kind of foot stomping Well they were careful to talk about that these would not be the quote unquote I would call them and their words They didn't actually say this but have they been all been talking about the mother of all sanctions The measures tomorrow that likely would include sanctions would not be those swift harsh severe ones They have been talking with their European partners So it does beg the question of how hard this would hurt the Russian economy But when you look at the ones that are potentially incredibly harsh it would for sure hurt the Russian economy because the Russian economy had been trying to create themselves a little bit of a barrier following the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the sanctions that ensued after that they are still part of a global financial system Okay And Marie you're awesome Thank you and of course this is not even reached the middle yet We'll continue to get back with you Thank you very much Bloomberg Washington and chief correspondent Anne Marie horne during in San Francisco I met Baxter This is Bloomberg Brian All right thanks very much I had 38 minutes past the hour It is time for world sport.

San Francisco is by far my favorite insult, lived and worked in sf for 20 years and watched the deteriorate. Been listening. Okay as well since college, no late nights and one of your loyal savages thing around here. My Vegas boss says, G. I would say back in 2000 even got to meet you. And you signed enemy within here in Vegas. Wow. Oh, I like the Clint Eastwood guest You had you know that Clint Eastwood once called into the show. Back in the early nineties, when I was a local host. I don't know if you ever listened since. I mean, I love his work. He's not a friend of mine. I'd love to meet the guy one day. I think he's one of the most talented moving people in the world. I think what I'm the only one who says that? Not only was a great actor, he became a great director, as you could see by his latest movies. How old is that guy in his nineties? Now? How does a man continue? Well, whatever that's a separate show. Maybe I'll do a podcast on that one day. And maybe Clint Eastwood will be a guest. Who knows who might want to be a guest on a part? Can you never know who might wind up right on the podcast. I'm not saying you will be consuming yet saying you said I'd be against that, and I don't know who you are. I didn't say that. I said maybe he'll be a guest. When I'm Mike, who would be my ideal guests in the park? I'm thinking about my first show. I should have brought that up. I think I know who my first guest is going to be. God willing on January 1st 2000 and 2020 21. 2020 21. Wow. Jesus. You know, I remember when I was a kid. I was so bored in school. This is a hard thing for a guy who hated school, which I hated. I hated school. But I stuck with it. I always stuck with it. But I my mind was always somewhere else. But unlike Robert De Niro went to the ninth grade and thinks he's smarter than George Washington. I stuck it out graduate degrees and I found out something interesting is that once I got out of undergraduate school and went into graduate school and went into a real feel that I loved where it was largely seminar based where you could discuss things In a very small, almost 1 to 1 basis. Sometimes that was me and the professor in the whole class. That's a great story. I I excelled at it because it was interesting. And you could you could use your mind. I stuck with it. You know, It's an interesting thing about the early days. I hated school, so I'd be sitting in school pulling the hairs out of my forums. I'm looking back now. You know that that's considered an illness now. See Digger something. I was pulling the hairs out of my forearm in high school because I wanted to die listening to the boring teachers with terrible perfume almost collapsed, sitting in for hours listening to drivel. I used to listen to the heater hissing anything but listening to the teacher. It was so boring. I could have learned what she was saying in three seconds. Side would pull a hair out of my arm. I didn't know what to do. I did so many other weird things as a kid, you're looking back. You know, kids, not every kid is made to sit in the chair and a desk. And look at someone in front of a room with a blackboard from Greek Greek. Sometimes the blackboard was developed in Greek times, because that's all they had. To talk to the students with was chalk and a blackboard. Wire Children still subjected to that. Why I Why Why do we still have an election like this? That goes on for eight years. The time one of these schmucks are elected his election going on for the next one. It's all a distraction. Nonsense. It's all of you. Look, you want to get into the political thing. 94. I call it a Democrat Party or republic Wrap party radiated. Remember that? Come on. Who do you think? I don't know that there's more immigrants now on the trump than there were on the last one. You think I didn't know that? But I told you if we got 10% more Then. Hey, only 10% of what he promised. It would be 100 and 10% more than than Clinton, Right? I told you that and I was right. But we got more than 10% of what he promised. But nevertheless, there's more illegals now than they were under the last president. Under Obama. I'm sorry to tell you. Why, Because the establishment the Democrat Party, the Republican Republic Rat Party is one party. It's in all of darkie. There are differences here and there, but by and large, tell me the big differences between the two parties. Tell me Right on right on rhetoric. There's a big difference on rhetoric is an enormous difference. You're gonna be insulted for being a white person for the next four years, mainly coming out of the mouths of white people who are liars and traitors. Their own belief system. They believe in nothing, most of them a garbage. They're human garbage with a pair of pants on or filthy skirt, and they will tell you that you should die because you're a white person one way or the other. Then they're gonna large you about climate change Now you didn't get beaten up enough about it. They tried it out in the beginning of the campaign in January. It fail like a lead balloon..
