House to vote on immigration bills with paths to citizenship

"Faced incredible trauma. Democrats in the House of Representatives are expected to move forward this week with their first effort at immigration reform. Doing the current Congress. The House will consider two bills, each of which addresses a portion of the sweeping immigration reform proposed in the White House backed legislation introduced in February. That package may seem to doomed in the Senate, where it would require 10 votes from Republicans. GOP lawmakers have panned the bills as blanket amnesty. One bill, the American Dream and Promise Act would create a path to citizenship for millions of immigrants known as dreamers. Another the Farm Work Force Modernization Act would establish a path to legal status for

"Forty-seven watching Washington and holding government accountable free leaks. WSB's continuing coverage of DC. Here's Scott Slade. Jamie's headlines this morning Republicans finally appoint members to the house intelligence committee, the house of representatives back a pay raise for federal workers. And let's start here. Republicans blasting a plan to make election day. National holiday is part of a larger plan on voting rights and election reform, Democrats in the congress are proposing something which has been talked about for years that is making election day and national holiday for supporters. The idea is straightforward and simple that a holiday would help more people get to the polls in vote, but on Wednesday that was denounced as a power grab by the senate's top Republican GOP lawmakers in both the house and Senate said the idea of giving federal workers day offer election day was not a good idea at all while it seems unlikely the idea can get through the congress anytime soon look for Democrats to bring it up as a way to argue that Republicans don't. You want to expand opportunities to vote in elections. I mentioned that federal pay raise just a moment ago. Jamie Dupree notes with feelings still raw from the partial government shutdown Democrats in the house approved a Bill Wednesday to reverse it. Executive order issued by President Trump during the shutdown which froze to pay federal civilian workers in two thousand nineteen. Instead the houses voted to get those workers or two point six percent, pay hike equal to the raise the president approved for members of the military. The Bill now goes to the Senate its future is unclear. One public event today. President Trump will meet with Chinese vice premier the latest U S, China trade talks will continue and vice president Pence will be at the swearing in for the White House drug czar this afternoon at four thirty check back for updates Jamie, Dupree's take throughout the day here on wwl. "KTAR indepth. All right. It happened over the weekend. Kelli ward became the. Party the direction. The direction of this nation. You can say anything. Democrat there. She is speaking at the state GOP convention where they they elected her as the new state GOP chair. She's going to be the head of the Arizona Republican party now and a lot of people are asking themselves. All right is moving because she is definitely a Trump backer. Right. There's no doubt in your mind in our mind. Anyway, that Kelli ward is a Donald Trump backers. So we'll moving more in the direction of Donald Trump help the Republican party in Arizona or hurt it more because it was not a great result for the Republicans in this past midterm election. There are now more Democrats representing the state of Arizona in Washington, then there are Republicans, and this is a state that various times either a Republican majority or there's an independent majority. But there hasn't been a democrat majority in Arizona a long long time. So you would imagine that you know, with the majority of Republican voters. And hey, let's just be honest. Most independence in Arizona. Maybe not an overwhelming majority. But most independence in Arizona tend to lean toward the Republican party. They should be that way. It should be that way. Right. So a lot of people are gonna say the party was already leaning towards Donald Trump. And that's why Republicans got their rear ends kicked. In this last election, and others are going to say, no there wasn't enough backing of Donald Trump, and that's why you get to where you are with the with Kelli ward. Now, the Republican GOP chair, by the way for name is familiar? It's because she ran for she's ran for a few different offices. The last one she ran for. Well, then we're very well. A-? As a matter of fact, she was running for the US Senate and didn't even emerged from the GOP primary. But. A lot of people have not been able to forgive her for the way, she acted towards John McCain, and I wrote in a column a while back that you know, it was kind of like because she's a doctor. It's like she was almost like taking his pulse. Almost waiting for him. You know, she was going to give her her medical opinion on why she should replace John McCain and why John McCain should step down. Really all you have to do is look back in August. Remember when Senator McCain died, they announced his family announced that he was going to be stopping his cancer treatment. They announced this the morning of the day that he passed away and just a few hours before he passed away. She made the suggestion on Facebook that well is Monday quote here. I think they have wanted to have a particular narrative that they hope is negative to me. Somebody makes it all about them. May not be the best thing for the Republican party. But it maybe it can't get worse than it got the midterm election for the Republicans here in Arizona six eighteen now KTAR, and it's time for another check of traffic.

"Three sixty five. I'm excited about the group nervous in one fence because of our inexperience in the back court. But athleticism medicine are length and dolphins. Recently five now at apple, podcasts and Spotify. The sex crimes prosecutor higher by Senate Judiciary committee. Republicans says, no reasonable prosecutor in her words would seek to bring a case against judge Brad Kavanagh based on the evidence given to the committee last week. Now you'll recall Rachel Mitchell spend hours asking Christine Blasi Ford questions about the night in question or Dr. Ford says, cavenaugh assaulted her. She only asked a few questions of judge cavenaugh before Republican members of the committee took over Mitchell wrote a five five-page memo to committee Republicans cited what she believed were inconsistencies in account given by Ford and other concerns. Just before air. I spoke with two former sex crimes. Prosecutors in New York City who know great deal about victims and the process behind prosecutions for Manhattan. Sex crimes prosecutor, Linda fairstein, and Roger Cano who for years conducted prosecutor training with Rachel Mitchell. Linda Mitchell says in her memo that he said she said, cases incredibly difficult to prove this case is even weaker than that. Do you agree? First of all, I always trained assistance that there is no such thing as a he said, she said, it's your job as an investigator as a prosecutor to find the information that supports one slide to the other. There is so much more information that everybody has, especially after Ford then was listed at this very choppy five minute five minute five minute hearing, and I think you need to sit down with her. Maybe her lawyers have certainly miss Mitchell was not a prosecutor in her role list week, but to find out how long she knew Brett cavenaugh. So when she says I have one hundred percent certainty about recognizing it's because she was with them on one, two, three, four, five other times. How about more judge? How about the other guys in the room? So much more to dig for to take this out of the the little bits. We saw the other day in Roger. I mean, you say the Mitchells conclusions in her memo or are not the views of a reasonable prosecutor. That's your words. Can you explain why why you have that opinion? Well, let me be clear. I think when she says that a reasonable prosecutor wouldn't bring the case as a criminal matter. I think she's right. I don't think the case could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, and I don't think that the interest of Justice would demand bringing it forward in that form. But I do not believe I agree very much with Linda. I don't believe it's a. He said she said case. I don't believe that that term, Linda, I don't believe that term belongs anywhere in prosecution and let me say, I, I know Rachel Miller, I trained with her on the investigation prosecution of child abuse for years. She is a decent and honorable public servant, but I'm distressed by this report. And first of all, it seems gratuitous to me. Rachel states that there is no clear standard as to what the Senate committee would need to use in terms of evaluating these allegations. If that's the case, then why comment on it further. But then when she goes on to say, well, here's why I don't think allegations are strong. Frankly, the report ends up reading like a conclusion in search of a list of evidentiary points to support it rather than a bunch of evidence to reports leading up to original conclusion. That's how I feel it. Linda into the point of Roger made. What's interesting also is she was disappeared from the testimony very quickly. Once Cavanaugh was actually testifying so that she's reach a conclusion without the opportunity to actually even question Brett cavenaugh would she was supposed to be able to do, but then the male senators decided they would take over for because they weren't happy with with the way she was doing or the way the judge was was coming out of it. Does it surprise you that she would write this memo? It's very surprising, but in the in the first four lines, miss Mitchell says three times, this is my independent report. The word independent is just ludicrous in light of the world. She was brought in to play. She was a hired gun. She was not there as a prosecutor. She was certainly not independent. You look to her questions..

"As we've heard the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell is saying the upper down Senate vote on knbr cavenaugh WorldCom sometime this week. The backdrop to that is new information from Brett Kavanagh's friends about his drinking, at least according to them and a New York Times report about an altercation. He was involved in at Yale back now with Ostrom. Coppa Kirsten powers and Michael Caputo I'll show. I mean when FBI agents here, Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, say here, you know, we're voting on the nomination this week. Do they have to adjust to meet that deadline or is f. b. i. director Christopher Ray, the one they look to for guidance? I mean, who actually runs this. I mean, obviously it's technically run by the FBI, but who's who's running. They're not paying attention to Mitch McConnell. They are going to take their direction from Christopher Wray likely in this case, given the level of you know that this is happening on and they've been given a deadline, they're going to do their best. Now the question Anderson is when they come back on Friday with the number of interviews that they've done, you know if they cut them off at that point, those interviews are recorded on a three o two's these testimonial documents. They'll put out put down what these interviews say, and if there are loose ends that is going to be clear to anyone who reads them there. It's going to be clear that there are additional lease additional witnesses that were not pursued. So I think then it just becomes a political question on, you know how the Senate wants to move forward. If it's very clear that the investigation is not complete cursing in Michael made the point before the break about, look. I mean, we're talking about throwing ice at somebody in a bar thirty plus years ago. That should be focused on his record, his his, his history, you know, as a judge, there's other Republicans who say, this is clearly now.

"You hit on the key reason why this is so important at this moment, even though Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell said today on the floor that he plans to vote on Brett Kavanagh's nomination. This week, Senate Republicans do not have the votes the threshold for what those three senators, demon adequate investigation. And then what they take from that investigation Anderson that will determine whether or not wreck Cavanaugh is in fact confirmed that the supreme court do we know who is going to find out exactly what the FBI learns. I mean, we'll the entire Senate be given the findings because obviously the nomination has already been voted out of conference out of the judiciary committee. Yeah, this is a really important if technical point that's going to come to four over that. Of course, the next couple of days and this is a background investigation. This isn't a criminal investigation, and there's a process here as you noted, the White House has to order it. Then the FBI goes, does it's interviews? Does its review man, sins that information back to the White House, the White House then sends. That to the Senate all one hundred senators because it's a supreme court nomination. We'll have access to that information, but they'll have to read it in a private room. That information cannot be released publicly. Only a very limited number of staffers will have access to that information. So that raises a key question that I've been talking to a lot of senators and top aides about how is the public or how are the center is going to be able to talk about what they find or what the FBI sends back. There is currently no answer to that question, but Senator John Cornyn the number two Republican also on the Senate Judiciary committee made clear today, somehow, someway that information is going to have to be made public in some form. Really the fate of bread, Kavanagh's nomination of the credibility of the FBI's work kind of depends on him, but that would be out of the norm and Anderson. That is still a question. They don't have the answer to somehow some people are going to have to find out what the FBI is done. How that actually comes about. You still have answered that aren't Phil Mattingly. Thanks, appreciate the update here and talk about that as well as capitalists. College friends saying he wasn't telling the truth about his drinking when he testified in the New York Times. Report about the internet of bar when Cavanaugh was a student and Gaba Pearson powers and Michael Caputo, Aisha. First of all, as far as New York Times report is concerned is alleged ice throwing as part of an altercation in a bar thirty some years ago, something the f. b. I would look into for supreme court nominee..

"Should they only talk to MS Ramirez or should they talk to the people who she has named? She has given them, I'm sure they're talking to all of them. I mean that that would be the logical steps. I'm sure they're doing that, but even pointing out what the FBI does look, this member is the guy who passed six FBI background checks. One of the specific things they do look for is if they ask the people from every range in like including college, including law school, the same periods we're talking about saying, did this is someone who had substance abuse problems. Have you seen the drink too heavily? I've answered these questions for people. They've asked me about, you know, if people I know doing background checks, this is what they ask. So six different times. He passed that not just at the regular background check level higher than top secret level. If he had some. Crazy history of alcoholism back there. Mike, goodness sake. The FBI would have found out. But to our knowledge, the FBI didn't find out that a police report with his name on it was was with the New Haven police department. Well, now now they do and I think it didn't didn't shed too much light on it. His friend hit someone with a Cup. It's not. That's not that doesn't. That's a glass. Sorry, that doesn't. That doesn't actually set a lot of, I know, but that that's not something cavenaugh did. That's the that's the whole point. So they aren't doing FBI background investigations of all of his friends. He was a Brett Cavanaugh and professor Ford had had not come forward at that point for her own reasons. So the fact that that was an investigated is certainly not talking about Ford. I'm talking about the allegations now that he is somehow some kind of a raging alcoholic. That is just again, I think this is silly season here. Research of turbans. Well, thanks, good discussion, much more to tonight. We're going to get the latest and what we know about how the FBI investigation is actually being carried out because they've been conflicting reports about how many people are actually talking to a story that seems to be changing by the minute. Also, the prosecutor hired by Republicans to ask questions at the hearing who then sidelined by the Republicans when she actually started to ask judge cavenaugh questions, she has given a memo two Republican senators saying reasonable prosecutor would not bring a case based on Dr forge allegation. Given the evidence presented to the committee. We'll talk about it with two very experienced sex crime. Prosecutors coming up on the program. "Ryan and all those republicans donald trump are against the trump tax cuts and paul ryan and all those republicans and laura ingram i saw her yesterday saying the same thing donald trump all believed that the tax cuts are giveaways for the rich paul ryan and laura ingram and donald trump then all those republicans now actually support obamacare and are against the giveaways to obamacare i could go on if you're also paul ryan and donald trump and all those other republicans now actually support the f l cio's positions on unions and trade it seems like they throw it away generations of republican orthodoxy this is truly a change election this one special in pencil and it just took twenty four hour republicans if you leave republicans now they could be lying through their teeth and if they're lying through their teeth then they aren't prochoice and they aren't against the twenty week abortion ban and they aren't for obamacare and they aren't against the tax cuts but i mean they're either lying through their teeth are they changed their positions in twenty four hours they certainly were very well rehearsed on that spin that you just played in that video clip i mean there's no question this this this is a loss of the republicans they can put their face out yesterday and they'll spend that we heard there frankly almost as laughable as the one that we're hearing from the white house where they white house spokesman said yesterday and then the president kinda hinted at the fun audio we heard from that fundraiser saying.

"Mr lamb was brilliant ran as a republican so it worked for he certainly didn't rose a democrat hunter lamb ran is a guy who would let himself up with president trump the lesson was run away from nancy pelosi and run with donald trump if the end of the day he ran as a republican connor land ran as a republican he was a republican in name us you had a republican name versus a republican and truth both of these candidates the republican democrat rain is conservatives rain as pro gun prolife anti nancy pelosi conservatives and i think that's that's the takeaway we see here if it is truly a wake up call we understanding of your members morning it's an also a wakeup call for the role the president should play from european enough coming midterm look i think the president how close this race i think you saw the public polling the public pulling wasn't looking so good in the president came in and how close this race and got it to where it is right now which is you know within a few hundred votes jonathan in less i don't really i'm not keeping up with what paul ryan and all those republican house members and everybody else that was talking there unless i'm not keeping up with where they are ideologically me if they ran as f if connor lamb now shares their views and donald trump's views then they now are pro choice they now support roe v wade paul ryan and all those republicans are now against a twenty week ban on abortion paul roy.

"Young man last night that ran he said i'm like trump i you know second i love the tax cuts everything you i i mean mean also resume campaign nice things about kipp sitting republican like a republican by the way me a lot of people on on tv and conservative radio yesterday we're claiming that connor lamb was a conservative who just basically followed in trump's direction that's actually this is gonna shock you but like the seth rich story in so many others that's just not true lamb called the republican tax bill a giveaway to the top one percent support expanded background checks support rovers swayed and criticised attempts to repeal obamacare lambs opponents spared no expense in reminding voters were he stood republicans and conservative groups spent thirteen point three million on tuesday special election outside groups behind the republican candidate vastly outspending the ones that backed lamb with ads that depicted lamb as a liberal and one of nancy pelosi sheet but now that he is apparently won the race republican house thought like who's sitting there putting commercial together going you know what that's gonna get in voting yeah rick secured first of all it's treating people in pennsylvania like i mean what are you telling people just remind people yesterday on this show show connor lamb called nancy pelosi to step aside in washington yeah and so again it's crazy they they go from saying that he's a tool a liberal tool of nancy pelosi to saying that he's a republican and why doesn't he just switch to the republican party the day after he wins it's ridiculous and said they were with him the whole way.

"Just you know didn't have an answer for how uh hillary clinton was going to eat or even just what her vision was to get in i was going back up again to get job participation going up uh you know to take on massinc peration you know and uh to deal with police violence and a whole bunch of other stuff there was no vision there there was just kind of empty slogans rate and and you know to the extent that there were policy positions it was you know it was stuff that was clearly you know just weak compromise stuff like instead of free college tuition it was may college more affordable now that kind of thing and instead of in we never hide out in the general i mean the fact is is that he was sitting on the website but we never heard the with never that would never heard a banner that was carried it was just donald trump is a moral monster and that's so yeah well yeah and so i think that's why we eat so that's why that's why the clinton campaign lost that's what gave trump this chance and also part of what gave trump is chance was was you know yes xenophobia yes racism and also because everybody you know not a i mean everybody to some extent uh on that republican gop stage was talking about net okay not everybody but over a hill side of louis started out over that all it'll a whole lot of those candidates on the gop primary stage were talking about it talking releasing a phobic terms of deporting millions millions of people for example they also we're talking about that i did trump win it was partly because he he no he talked about on these economic issues that in very stark specific graphic ways right and he really ran far to the left arm of hillary clinton on the economy and um and while he didn't have a totally coherent at cannes.
